soc reunion breakfast date for the drabble prompts??

Inej was the first to arrive at the cafe. No one knew she was even in Ketterdam, let alone that she would be attending the breakfast that Wylan and Jesper had planned for the one year anniversary of their Ice Court heist.

She sat in a corner, making sure to hold up a newspaper to make sure she wasn’t seen. Word of Kaz Brekker’s Wraith arriving back in Ketterdam, especially now she was also notorious for her dispatching of slavers, would spread fast. She was hoping her appearance would come as a surprise for Kaz and Nina, if the later was able to leave Ravka and the former bothered to turn up.

Wylan and Jesper had been incredibly kind, letting her stay at the Van Eck mansion on arrival yesterday and keeping her presence there a secret.

Inej wasn’t sure what to expect. The last time she’d seen Wylan and Jesper, and Kaz, had been six months ago, when her crew had made a short stop in Ketterdam.

She watched as Wylan and Jesper entered the cafe ten minutes after she arrived. They sat down at a large table and glanced around, not noticing Inej hidden in the corner. At first glance, they could have been any mercher and his less savoury associate - for Jesper still wore bright Barrel flash despite his position as Wylan’s assistant, and it suited him (although Inej imagined Jesper would look good in a trash bag.)

They had an air about them, as if they were wholly comfortable with each other. A year spent in the same house did that, Inej supposed. Wylan rested his hand casually on Jesper’s arm while he leant back in his seat, talking about a new revolver or waistcoat that had caught his fancy, Inej was sure, as he fiddled with the handle of his pistol.

Nina arrived next, in her full glory. She was sporting a silky red dress that trailed behind her as she run to hug Wylan and Jesper in turn.

Kaz was last to walk through the wooden door. Inej was beginning to wonder if he was coming at all. He had proclaimed his intention to never attend one of these so-called “reunions” when Nina broached the subject through a letter to Inej. However, she was convinced that there was some part of him that cared enough about these people he had risked his life with to make an effort to see them again. She had made herself see the best in him. She was beginning to think perhaps that wasn’t such a good idea.

When the bell on the door rung and Kaz walked through, holding his cane, both hands covered by his black leather gloves, Inej found some tension leave her shoulders. He walked up to the other gathered, who welcomed him warmly, greeted them with a mere shrug, and sat down.

When they’d talked for a little while, Inej put down her newspaper and strolled up to the table where Wylan, Jesper, Nina and Kaz were sitting.

Nina caught sight of Inej first. She gasped audibly, and then her face lit up. Nina jumped up and threw her arms around her best friend, hugging her hard. Inej found a smile spread across her face from Nina’s familiar scent of flower perfume and honey.

As Nina rambled almost incoherently, asking Inej a stream of questions about the last year, and Wylan and Jesper joined in, despite having eaten dinner with her last night, she found herself glancing at Kaz. He said nothing but gave her a nod of acknowledgement.

When Kaz stood up, Nina’s chatter fell to nothing. He held out his hand to Inej and caught her eye.

“Welcome back, Wraith.”
