how did you make those holy shit!!!
jfjskdk okay I'll take any excuse I get to talk abt this more
How I made my Cardassian prosthetics
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: I'm no expert, it's my first time doing this!! All the resources I used can be found online. In fact, here's a playlist of all the youtube videos I followed, in case you don't want to read the whole post. You can pretty much make any facial prosthetics following these steps, not just Cardassian ones.
What you'll need:
Tumblr media
Plaster bandages, plaster of Paris (a lot more than is pictured here), modeling clay, and liquid latex. You'll also need some things you probably already have around the house, like vaseline (or cooking oil), plastic wrap, wood glue, rubbing alcohol, q-tips, cotton balls, and setting powder (or baby powder).
Step 1: Face cast
Tumblr media
The goal here is to make a plaster copy of your face that you can sculpt your prosthetics on, by covering your face with plaster bandages and then casting that in plaster of Paris. This is the video tutorial I followed for this step. There are many methods, and you'll find tutorials for all of them on youtube, but this is the easiest way if you're doing it by yourself, and it results in a perfectly useable face cast for our purposes. And, if you're cosplaying Garak like me, it's a great way to get into character by experiencing claustrophobia for the first time in your life!! (Jk it's not actually that bad. I lived.)
The video explains the process better than I could, but here's some tips I learned from doing it! Wear a shirt that you don't mind ruining. Go a bit closer to your eyes than I did here. When you're propping up your mask in a bowl, make sure you're not squishing any parts of it or tilting it! I ended up with a dent in the chin of my face cast because I accidentally dented the mask while I was casting it. And make sure you have enough plaster of Paris! I probably used 2-3 pounds for this part. Here's what I ended up with, before sanding or sealing it with wood glue:
Tumblr media
Step 2: Sculpting
Tumblr media
This is pretty self explanatory, but also probably the hardest part. Just use lots and lots of reference photos. I've got a pretty good stash for Garak, if anyone's interested hdjkfhk. I found that gifs made better references than still photos, since they give you a better sense of the 3D shape. You want to make sure you're using modeling clay that doesn't dry. You don't need any fancy sculpting tools! I used my trusty palette knife to get the small details, but you could probably accomplish the same thing with, like, a spoon and a toothpick. It depends on what kind of clay you're using, but you can dip your finger in a solvent to smooth out the surface of the clay and blend the edges into the face cast. I used rubbing alcohol, but I also heard people recommend acetone. Once you're happy with your sculpt, you can move onto the next step!
Step 3: Casting negatives
Tumblr media
This step is technically optional. The video I followed also outlines an easier way that skips this step, by simply building your prosthetics directly on the sculpt. But casting negatives allows you to get a lot more fine detail, and a smoother finish on the final prosthetics, so that's what I chose to do. Basically, you pour plaster of Paris over your sculpt, and it hardens into a mold you can use to build your prosthetics on.
Again, the video explains it better, but some tips! If it's possible with your sculpt, do it in small pieces instead of the whole face at once. I did the chin, nose, and forehead separately. If you try to do the whole face, there's a greater chance of it getting stuck or breaking. Of course, if you were doing, say, Odo, then it might not be possible to do it in multiple pieces. Another thing to watch out for:
Tumblr media
If your underlying face cast has any "undercuts," or places where it's, like, concave, then if plaster gets into those areas and hardens, your face cast and your negatives will lock together, and you won't be able to use either of them. For me I was worried about the sides of my nose and under my bottom lip. As long as those parts are filled in with clay, then you should be fine. It's okay if your clay sculpt has undercuts! You can see in the (shamelessly stolen) diagram that their sculpt has a lot of undercuts, but that's okay because the clay is soft and won't lock with the plaster, it'll just come off. The video I got the diagram from was also pretty helpful, even if it's meant for casting with different materials than I used. Here are the completed negatives:
Tumblr media
Step 4: Making the prosthetics!
Now you have negatives! Your sculpt may or may not be intact, but if your negatives turned out okay then that's fine. This step is also covered in the video for step 3. Using a stippling sponge, foam brush, or q-tip, stipple thin layers of liquid latex onto your negatives. I found that a q-tip worked best, even if it took longer to cover larger areas. Make sure the edges are very thin, so you can blend them into your skin when you apply the prosthetics. Wait for a layer to dry before adding more latex on top of it, or you'll end up with fucked up results like I had:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Left: first draft, where I didn't let it dry enough before layering more. Right: second draft. Much better!)
Build up bulky areas with pieces of cotton balls, then cover the cotton with a thin layer of latex. Emphasis on thin! It'll take forever to dry if you saturate your cotton with too much latex. This step mostly involves a LOT of waiting. When the latex is fully dry, brush everything with a liberal amount of setting powder or baby powder to prevent the latex from sticking to itself as you peel it out of the mold.
Tumblr media
And now you have your prosthetics! You can tear away some of the excess latex at the edges to make it fit your face better. I ended up tearing away almost all of the edges around the eye ridges, so it would blend better and I wouldn't have to get adhesive so close to my eyes. Tear, don't cut! It'll result in a more natural edge that's easier to blend. This video shows how to apply prosthetics. Use whatever prosthetic adhesive you want! I used spirit gum because it's what I had on hand.
Now you can go forth and live out your lizard alien dreams!!

the reason we never see garak and bashir do sherlock holmes holodeck larping was that unlike geordi and data they both wanted to be holmes and they couldn't convince the other one to switch. garak would be like but you're a real doctor and bashir would be like yeah but i'm also a genius and garak would be like well i'm mysterious and aloof and a drug addict and bashir would be like well i'm taller. and it goes on and on so eventually they just book a holosuite thinking the other one will change their mind but then they both show up in sherlock holmes cosplay and they both refuse to go home and change, and they try to do the story with two holmeses but it just devolves into them arguing for two hours until quark kicks them out and they never try it again. so unfortunately we never get to see that episode but it would have been so funny if it existed

So - some OMB love. I wanted to copy the old Bond posters from the 60s (Thunderball, Goldfinger etc) als close as possible with all their roughness and hard contrasts and awesome colours. Also, we all know that Garak is cosplaying Pussy Galore but not 100%, so I adjusted his clothes a little bit. Now it's even more Pussy! Julian was already wearing Bonds light grey suit from that scene on Goldfinger's ranch, I just added the waistcoat. Thanks again for your comments and tags on my previous illustrations <3! My wedding was a really nice event :D

4. WIP: Concrete Garden Beds - I haven't posted about this yet, but a couple of months ago I started screwing around with concrete. Naturally, I decided to make some giant ST themed yard art with it. Planning on turning them into succulent gardens. I was hoping to finish them before the end of the year, but didn't have either the time or the weather for it. So, here's a preview of the bigger one:
Tumblr media
Year In Review:
Total word count: 13,134
Longest complete fic: The Gift of Giving Names (2,680 words)
Most popular fic: Can't Have One Without the Other (kudos: 153, bookmarks: 14)
Most popular fan craft: My bind of A Stitch in Time (507 notes)
My personal highlights: The Gift of Giving Names and The Smoke of Her Burning. The former is something I've had on the back-burner for years so I'm glad I finally got it finished to my own satisfaction. The latter is the opposite: I didn't plan at all, just wrote in a day or two in response to a prompt. It's been a while since I wrote something this bleak and angsty, which was fun. I'm also incredibly pleased with how my attempt to pastiche a Shakespearean sonnet turned out. And finally, for bookbinding, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to top my version of A Stitch in Time.
All in all, kind of a lousy year for writing, but not bad in terms of fanwork diversity. I'm particularly happy with the progress I've made with my bookbinding, and looking forward to playing around more with concrete in 2024.
Happy New Year!

Okay Destination Trek notes! First here's what I really liked:
- Everything was SAG compliant and there was so much important strike talk. Obvs this made some questions impossible to answer, and it was slightly hard to predict what would be wrong to say just since different actors had different comfort levels (big range from "I support my comrades but I'm not gonna pretend I'm not in Star Trek" from David Ajala to J G Hertzler encouraging us to threaten media executives with [COPYRIGHTED SPACE WEAPON] to Terry Farrell not wanting to mention working on TV or film at all), but honestly it just made the whole thing really friendly
- on that note, multiple guests said it was the best convention they'd been to in years. I don't have a lot of personal experience with them, but I was talking to a lot of older fans and many of them said this felt a lot like the early days of conventions which were also set in hotels
- being in a hotel made it a) more accessible (and there were So Many fellow disabled Trekkies to prove it!!), b) easier to hang out between activities, and c) just super personable. The guests could hang out in the bar with the fans, there were lots of comfy seats everywhere, and it was very easy to step away if something wasn't your speed.
- not being in London helps the vibes too
- not being Paramount affiliated made the tickets a bit cheaper (much appreciated)
- most of the activities were teamwork focussed. Initially I was a little freaked by that but actually it gave the whole thing a friendly social club vibe
- science talks! Community talks! Asking the actors questions about their lives and work outside of what they're most famous for! Stories we haven't all heard a thousand times!
- I'll make another post about the specifics of accessibility and why I liked this infinitely more than the official ones in London aircraft hangars, but I just really have to stress how important I found that here
- being fan organised and fan led, the focus was on us and how much we love this shit. I didn't find the old format Bad in this respect, but this really did hit different
- J G Hertzler is seriously the coolest person I've met. He stole my craft group's batleth and we couldn't be happier about it.
- So Many Cool Cosplays!!! Shout out especially to the drag queens, the older man cosplaying Admiral Janeway, the Voyage Home Spock and inflatable whale, the power chair decked out to look like a shuttle, all the babies in uniform, the tribble queen in her tribble pelt dress, all the Klingons who didn't artificially darken their skin, the furry doctor from lower decks, all of the Borg, the Klingon pug with a plush batleth, and so so many others I'm forgetting ❤️🖖❤️
Notes for Future Cons
- If you don't already have access to it because of an expensive ticket, I wouldn't bother paying for the opening ceremony. It's not actually at the start of the event and also it's literally just the actors coming on stage, saying hi, then rushing back to the autograph tables. Do go to the closing ceremony though! There's way more of a point to those
- If you're not a huge extrovert, already drunk, or completely happy in awkward situations, I wouldn't recommend being the first in the door at the parties. Give it an hour or so - they sounded very lively later on, but when I tried to go in earlier the primary school disco vibes were off the charts. Plus the music's too loud to actually talk to anyone, and no one's dancing yet. I did see one guy run past with a portable charger for his friend in a wheelchair that lost power on the dance floor though, so clearly they got cooler later on lol. Addendum here that I'm an autistic non drinker so that might colour things.
- to the white folks darkening their skin for generic Klingon cosplays, reconsider that one next year
- to the white guy wearing brown face paint to cosplay Worf specifically, what the fuck, man??
- to the person who boo'd the mention of Julian/Garak at the LGBTQ+ panel, fight me but also maybe skip whatever the equivalent is next year cause Andy Robinson's booked to come
- host mocked Scottish accents a couple times :(
- here's hoping the unions will have their demands met and we'll be able to talk about Star Trek publicly with actors who can access healthcare and pay their rent. But if not, at least we know the con will still be fun.
- maybe see you in Blackpool next July 💙

I can't believe the thing that finally made Garak crack and openly acknowledge he was a spy is Bashir's holo-fantasy.
He spent all that time denying being in the Obsidian Order despite being it obvious he was but the moment Julian wants to cosplay James Bond he drops all pretense.

Lets so with a not so scathing hot take: 22
🔥 choose violence ask game 🔥
your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores:
The few fics I've seen with Ezri in them don't seem to add in that she has very bad anxiety and low confidence, and even when she does get it even in the novel-verse, it takes her years to because she finally becomes one with Dax. She never had the proper training to be a host, it's a whole serious and hard thing to go through as noted by Jadzia in many episodes. Ezri was given something she was never ready for, didn't want (iirc), and it's doubled by her becoming the station's therapist when she hasn't even finished that training either! Not even if it's a mainly Garashir fic, if it's done within the first year of them being parted, I don't believe (as someone who suffers an anxiety order myself and all that comes with) that it's enough time for Ezri to really settle in with her new life, job(s), and Dax :/ Not only that, but she's hella young too, so even more time is gonna be needed. This all very relatable and means so much to my neurodivergant self, so much I want to cosplay her!
ALSO: why doesn't anyone talk about Leeta being Bajoran. Not merely in she has the nose ridges or believes in the prophets, but in she was there as the Cardassians wrecked her planet and people. She was there in those ghettos too, she suffered under their hand. She's gonna have trauma, and not suddenly be Garak's bestie to talk about Julian with. I think I've only seen one fic that refers to this all and where Julian has to remember he can't talk so easily about Garak with her because it's still very fresh for her and all the Bajorans on the station.
Not only that, but even I forget that Leeta has said how she studied sociology (Julian goes as far to say she an amateur sociologist, recognizing her knowledge). She said how it helps her as Dabo girl to know her customers, get them to trust her most likely and bet more. She's not just a pretty face and kind woman, she's a strong woman who survived a Cardassian controlled time on her planet and strives to learn, especially when it was no doubt hard to do so while living with so little.

I... I'm looking up how to make prosthetics by myself so i can cosplay garak....
Last year i taught myself how to sew by hand so I could cosplay link and now I'm learning a brand new ability
Why do i always do this, i always go "this looks cool. I've never done anything vaguely similar to this before but i can do it."
