The episode title mentions Chiyu by name, so I wonder why the translation didn’t…

It’s nice they let Protag-chan have a personality.

It’s fine if you can’t read the katakana, but Gavin’s name is Haku in Japanese, so it throws out the immersion somewhat…also, I know I shouldn’t be complaining – I’m the target audience here – but do these guys look kinda similar or what…? (partially kidding)

High school sweethearts, huh? “Childhood friends” is my favourite angle of a romantic relationship, but it gets so overused by harems it comes around to being boring…!

This anime is gonna cause me some frustration, but it gives the good stuff in roughly equal measure. It seems to omit the fact you interact via phone with your bois for intimacy (in the game).

Okay, in order, it seems to be hexadecimals, Javascript (you can tell from the “const”), some kind of profiles which are apparently for human lab rats (which seem to have some kind of nonsense filler text), a DNA model and DNA bases (ACGT).

The text on the screen says something along the lines of this being an official broadcast of this man’s arrest and this man was a genetic researcher. Obviously, if I wanted to put more attention into what it meant, I would, but I won’t sweat the details this time (because it doesn’t seem to impact the plot).

The guy’s name is Minor because minor key (geddit?)…that’s my guess.

I started playing the game due to this anime, if you didn’t know, and I unlocked an expert in ch. 2. I thought he was Minor, but turns out his name is Spine (an older man).

The diary, true to form, contains details about either one case or several cases, two involving children. The bottom of the 1st page says “if it’s fake, I’ll laugh”.

Hey, I once told Crunchyroll I wanted an anime about hacking (so is this a dream come true? I reveal all in the next sentence!). Hackers don’t congregate like this…they’d be too conspicuous, even with the secret hideout!

The code in the top left appears to be…C? I think? (Note they declare “unsigned int”.)

Kiro sometimes reminds me of Masayoshi (SamFlam)…it puts a derpy smile on my face.

This is the 2nd time this has gone pseudo-isekai. As much as I like to joke about it…I fully expect someone to be sent to another world at this point.

I managed to successfully predict – without watching ahead – Appare would catch himself with his traps.

Kosame with his hair down…is rare. Not exactly attractive because we have to care about the racers rather than lust after them (and the artstyle actually prevents me from doing so, because it’s deliberately quite cartoony), but it’s rare.

Appare is surprisingly childish…that’s what makes him more than a Sheldon Cooper, I think.

The spelling of the place is actually “Ely”, if Google-sensei is any indication. C’mon, subbers! You’re American (most likely)! Can’t you put in the legwork (or the Google-fu) to discover what place in Nevada this is?!

Subbers make characters say “shit” a lot in this show, hmm? (contemplative)

I like how the steam/gas boat/car has Chinese numerals on its dial.

Kosame means “small rain”, so “heavy rain” is obviously to contrast that.

The Hototo joke never gets old.

I can almost imagine the wee-oo-wee-oo-ooooooo…wah-wah-wahhh…(You know the one sound snippet, right? The one theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - or whatever movie it is – that maybe involves a tumbleweed rolling across the screen, and then a huge shootout? If you don’t know it, play a sample on this Wikipedia page!) playing in the background.

It’s convenient the prarie dog didn’t appear when Hototo (old) had his revenge spree.

I noticed there’s a bit of a mark under Kosame’s left eye…it suggests that he’s been crying (or maybe it shows tiredness from the race…?), but it’s not that noticeable.

So that’s the real Gil…and tose were his henchmen that threatened to hang everyone bar Kosame. Got it.

(notes to self) So, for charting a course with Appare Ranman!, it’s Los Angeles -> Death Valley -> Ely -> Denver -> ??? -> New York. Got it.

Fugou Keiji 4

“Daisuke-sama” isn’t “Lord Daisuke”, it would be “Sir Daisuke”, I think…but “lord” has a proper translation in Japanese.

The truck has a Shinagawa licence plate. Anime really does like Shinagawa, huh? (Based on ID: INVADED and this.)

I think it’ll be interesting to see Kambe handle this without HEUSC.

The board for Sanchome (which is equivalent to a suburb…or a county, I guess?) has posters saying stuff like “take your dog poop home” and “let’s protect the environment!” (technically, it says “let’s protect the region/area!”, but that doesn’t translate right. There’s even a flea market. Still, those posters don’t have any big hints…not that I know of so far.

I kind of forgot that dude was the gardener for Kambe’s house…er, mansion.

I noticed a poster in the kouban says haru (spring) on it. That’s probably the same one that Haru’s name is signified by, assuming that’s not in combo with another character or few.

Oh great…the sister is an overbearing one.

Ahh…he doesn’t like natto. So that’s the problem. Daisuke is childish (like Appare)…Note I don’t like natto either, but I wouldn’t run away from home (or similar) because I was fed natto.

I noticed Kambe uses shinseki (which doesn’t refer to close family). “Relative” is a correct translation of that word, I just wanted to check that word was the right one for the context.

There’s a green tea bottle by the sink…I don’t think I’d mistake that shade of green for anything else.

LOL, I didn’t think we’d actually get to see Kambe with his hair “down”, so to speak. It’s…an interesting look, for sure.

Oh my gosh! It cost him (Haru) $15!!! (LOL, cheapskate…says the cheapskate…*suddenly droops and stops laughing*) Update: Sorry about the sudden downer there. I was having what the kids these days call a “woke moment”…at least, I think that’s how they use that term.

…I’d watch that crime drama. It’s funny.

Just realised Kato has an older model of phone than Kambe does.

This episode was kinda like a Tokyo Sonata kind of thing, huh? The sensational in the middle of the not-so-sensational…”sensational” for this show, anyway.

Those kids look like the ones from Erased.

Can Suzue actually hear HEUSC while Kambe is using it…? $2.46 though…that is cheap, in comparison to the ham.

This was the cheapest episode so far (about $550)…probably because it was an insight into Kato’s life, more than Kambe’s.

The flag seems to be based on Cameroon’s (which is in Africa, not America) and the “Arita Kinen” seems to refer to Arima Kinen, meaning this episode is set around Christmas-ish. Credit goes to Kambe Zaibatsu on this show.

Sword Slash Saturday: Why Marth’s Fe1 design is Actually Good and Not Just Some Silly Pantless Nonsense

“The Less pants I have the more powerful I become” -Marth (probably)

Sure we laugh at this 90′s look from our OG fire emblem lord. I joke about it, you do. Legs for days. And that tiny... tunic riding up his legs shorter than 1970′s basketball shorts, can you imagine fighting enemies and a giant dragon in those?! Well actually, the irony to this all, the answer to your question is yes, yes he absolutely can. Below for today I will explain why you should not laugh at this look, but F E A R it. P.S. there is a slight artistic nudity depictionn, you have been warned.

First we shall break down exactly why nintendo approved this look.

In the Fire Emblem OVA (animation), Marth was called Mars, which was the original Japanese name for him (translated to English) and eventually morphed to Marth. While marth is a soft soy boi who seeks piece and a bit naiive, the name Mars seems a complete contrast to his character! Anyway Mars is the Roman god of war. Romans were known to be fearsome warriors creating an empire by conquering a lot of the continent of Europe and constantly driving out and massacring those such as the Celts, Jews, Carthaginians, etc. You get the idea (in fact the fall of Rome was due to making so many enemies and being too large to even control).

If we look at the statue of Caesar Augustus (yeah that Caesar)

This bitch is dressed in no more than a breastplate and tunic. At least Marth has freaking pauldrons... but I guess Caesar was too busy getting stabbed in all emperor glory to worry about pauldrons all the time...

Anyway lets look at the Greek cousins of the Romans. The Greeks and Romans had similar fighting gear and I am too lazy to dig through the depths of google to find roman art depictions of warriors (I’ll get back to that in a sec), there’s only like historical renderings and deviantart paintings and dnd ocs. But here’s your nudity warning again

The Greek warriors are often depicted wearing helmets, brandishing swords, greeves (shin guards), a shield, a sheath, and uh... not really anything else. Yah. They’re fucking naked. Shield: held, Sword: brandished, Dick: OUT.

But let’s go over the logistics of this. Helmet covered the head, Nintendo left this out due to character design logistics. We need to see Marth’s pretty bishie boi face. He has some sort of breatplate in OVA, like the Romans. the chest is protected. While the greeks got their legs covered, Marth does not, and well he could use some greeves. But let’s look at the torso. How could the greeks afford just to wear greeves?. Well, that giant shield? Yah that covers the body. As for Marth’s minimal body armor? Well he’s got this:

The fire emblem is a shield. Covers most of the body when held close, and in the early fire emblem, marth cannot unequip it. So Marth’s body is protected. he also wears the cloth tunic of the Romans for extra you know something to you know... have some decency.

But Marth weilds Falchion, which in earlier posts I said was a Longsword, and not actually a falchion sword. With a Longsword, you don’t use a shield. It takes one hand for a shield, and two for a longsword, which doing humanoid math, accounts to not enough hands. So how the heck can Marth wield a longsword and a shield.

Well in his early depictions, Falchion isn’t that long compared to his current depictions:

(^that’s a longsword). Compared to the first fe1 image, which seems (at least to me, just roll with it), a bit shorter. Which could fit more of arming sword. And my instructor commented on how I scaled my prop Falchion that it while it *could* qualify as a longsword, could easily be used with one hand and a shield. The Romans learned iron working (making iron to steel which held advantage to the greek iron weapons), from the Celts, eventually perfecting it to overcome the Celts.

In conclusion, Marth’s tunic outfit is a repsresentation and depiction of the fearsome ruthless Roman warrior, known for pillaging the entire continent of Europe for at least 500 years. Y I K E S. Don’t mess with pantless Marth.

FE1 even made him an aggressively OP unit who could take down his entire game pretty much entirely on his own

Think twice before you think being pantless is funny. It’s not, it’s powerful.

obviously spoilers for entire danganronpa series under the cut, along with very specific character hate, a TINY dash of ship “hate” which should not be taken seriously, me being indifferent about characters you might like, and also me being fairly morbid. my opinions are all over the place! boy do i have a lot of them. some of them probably won’t be yours, because people can have opinions. all kinds of em! fascinating stuff. please oh please, let this post not somehow make someone start arguing with me because i didn’t put a thousand asterisks everywhere

1. Favourite game?

sdr2 is the best just like factually speaking

2. Favourite Protagonist?

i tried to answer this and my answers were “komaeda. wait he isn’t-- KIRIGIRI! wait no” so there’s that. i like all of them though

3. Favourite antagonistic character?

i assume this means the Rival characters right... i like komaeda and ouma. in my danganronpa rp server, i had my oc rob and also humiliate and cyberbully togami, and drew a squirtle on his stupid bald head because hagakure asked him to, so there’s that

if antagonistic also covers the characters who are murderers + masterminds/villains, then... ok gonna be real here? there’s only one character i am familiar with who i know i hate and it’s t*ruteru

4. Favourite character?

entire sdr2 cast (except t*ruteru), most of the dr1 cast (hifumi is gross, i don’t honestly care either way about leon or sayaka, and for clarification i like togami as a character but dislike him as a person), most of the v3 cast (i haven’t actually played v3 yet and once i do it’s probably gonna be more like all of them or all of them except one. i do know the general plot and characters, it’s just that i get way more emotionally invested when i actually play the game)

5. Best girl?

don’t you go making me choose...

6. Best boy?

the same as above except the answer is komaeda and we should all hurry up and acknowledge this

7. Favourite class trial from all the games?

i have multiple favourites but because it was the first one i thought of, i’m gonna give kudos to the third trial in sdr2. it was especially interesting because the murderer seemed obvious if you only took in the basic facts, but when you know what kind of person mikan is, it seems completely preposterous that she’d do such a thing-- which makes the solving of it all the more DELICIOUS... oh it was so good i loved it... the whole time i kept searching and searching for any answer other than mikan and coming up with nothing, and knowing that, i knew that it had to be her, but i couldn’t fathom the why and that alone was enough to keep me in doubt for ages... the very end when she starts to break down eliminated my doubt but my questions of “why” only increased tenfold and it made it even MORE delectable i fucking LOVE puzzle’s and mystery’s

8. Least favourite character?

i am physically incapable of summoning empathy for t*ruteru even with his sad backstory. i hope they tossed him in another volcano after the dr3 anime was over

9. Least favourite class trial?

i actually legit keep putting off playing v3 because i know who dies first and it makes me so mad

10. What would be your Ultimate SHSL Title?

HMM... i think i’d be a shsl ??? which i understand isn’t a real title but like... that’s sort of just... how it’d be, considering my personality and the existing characters i kin... later would be the reveal of my actual title, though i’m not too sure what it’d be myself. probably something like shsl detective, shsl writer/storybuilder, shsl puzzle/mystery enthusiast, shsl kinner of mysterious smart autistic bishies with pretty hair and ptsd... something along those lines

forgettable but the parts with sdr2 kids’ school life is blessed and so is the happy ending

i saw it when it first came out and not once since. i will probably not watch it again because i prefer a more hands-on mystery-solving experience, even when i already know the answers

okay get ready for this: fuyuhiko/chihiro

it came to me in a dream once. fuyuhiko was like yo chihiro check this out and he showed her a box with a bunch of mice in there and she was like :O! and then the two of them just like. took handfuls of mice and hung out like that. it was good.

the laws of shipping fuyuhiko and chihiro are these: fuyuhiko is a trans boy and bi, chihiro is a trans girl and also bi, and they have to hold handfuls of mice together at some point

19. Who do you think is an underrated character?

i refuse to acknowledge the fandom for long enough to notice which characters are classified as underrated for the most part because i live in my own brain palace where i can love every character and that is all that matters. that being said, i think it is fairly obvious that hoshi from v3 is underrated just... factually speaking? people do not pay attention to him very much it seems but it also seems he is a good little man. i know little about him, but that is the technical definition of underrated, so that is my answer i guess

20. Who do you think is an overrated character?

again i don’t know if he even IS overrated in the fandom but i think leon is kinda boring. i don’t hate him or even dislike him necessarily because i don’t... care enough about his character for that... i could probably be influenced by someone who is passionate about him, but right now he’s just kind of existing

21. Favourite voice actor?

megumi ogata snatched me bald. megumi ogata didn’t even leave me with my scalp

22. Favourite talent?

shsl luck is a neat concept to play with, shsl adventurer is flat out aesthetically Pristine, shsl detective is fun, and shsl ??? is delicious and interesting even if it’s not a real title

my brother got me a monokuma plushie for my birthday and the first thing i did was choke it. also, monokuma is hilarious and i hate his slutty little ass but love to watch it go, which is the same opinion i have about dimple from mp100

okay this question INVITES morbidity so. like. i get to be morbid.

the ones that make me laugh the most are celestia’s and (look i was very sad but i can explain) alter ego’s because ... when i see them i can’t stop thinking about two specific vines. celestia’s execution is funny on its own but when i think about this fucking vine it gets worse and HERE. LOOK. I LOVE ALTER EGO BUT THIS MAKES ME GO HAM

the most brutal and ultimately chilling? leon’s, by far. it was EXTREMELY well done and sets the tone for the game so well

the one i like because the character deserved it? gee i wonder if it might be t*ruteru’s just can’t tell

and then there is only one that fills me with a sort of mysterious, enigmatic emotion-- very strong, but indescribable and neither positive nor negative. junko’s. really, junko in general elicits this emotion from me, she’s very interesting. what an excellent villain

gonta didn’t deserve that and he definitely didn’t deserve such a weird-ass fuckin execution either

rantaro and ouma actually ARE alive and v3 is fake

hey i dunno how this question is different to the last one so i’m just gonna say that actually, you know how in sdr2 everyone is in a virtual reality and they’re shsl despairs being cured? the same is true in v3 and izuru also revives all the v3 kids. this is fact, and kodaka signed the rights to danganronpa over to me

31. Is there a character you think who shouldn’t have survived but did?

also, realistically? like not because i dislike him. the opposite is true, i like him a lot. just realistically speaking. the fact that souda somehow survived sdr2 without dying seems almost unrealistic, not because anyone would have killed him but because he’s a dumbass

Okay I know that kingdom hearts has a bad reputation for sticking crucial plot information on obscure spinoff games but HOLY SHIT I just finally watched a lets play of the fuckin digimon tcg game and found out it ACTUALLY HAS A GODDAMN CONCLUSION TO ANALOGMAN FROM DIGIMON WORLD 1

like 90% of the damn game has no plot whatsoever let alone indicating its a digimon world sequel! and then suddenly in the last battle without being foreshadowed whatsoever analogman returns and gets possibly the best boss battle ever IN A GODDAMN TCG GAME

holy shit his whole fight is framed as ‘this is literally the same guy from digimon world 1, hacking another game’, the interface wigs out and a bunch of fake command windows pop up with rapidly scrolling code of the game supposedly falling apart. And then his boss battle flips the entire gameplay system on its head by giving him fourth wall breaking special moves that pull overpowered effects by “hacking the engine”, with cool animations to fit. Fuckin badasssss!!

and it also fuckin FINALLY EXPLAINS THE DAMN PLOT LIKE GEEZ

digimon world’s conclusion was so rushed, you never even meet the villain until the final battle and it ends all weird with just “something” going wrong that causes him to get sucked into a portal or something while screaming dramatically in weirdly high resolution terror faces??? the tcg game confirms that this was him attempting to flee back to the human world after you defeated him, but one of the stray attacks from the battle damaged his machine and it caused him to essentially commit accidental suicide when he turned it on.

and HOLY SHIT MY FUCKIN OBSCURE HEADCANON IS TRUE????

the game had some sequel bait hints that maybe analogman is somehow still around and that the portal explosion just turned him into “corrupted data” so he can never return to the human world. and i always thought it would be super ironic if he actually got turned into a digimon aka the thing he hates more than anything

WELL OKAY I GUESS CRITICAL LORE IN A TCG GAME IS OKAY WHEN ITS A BIG YES BUNNI U THEORY BE CORRECT

he appears in this game as a malomyotismon who does a damn good vexen face during the fight, lol. And he’s all “gahh that stupid kid ruined my plans but this accursed body at least improved my hacking abilities!” Tho its implied that his corrupted state is more like a bodyless cloud of data that can possess/copy different digimon, which would be REALLY FUCKIN CRITICAL to explaining the goddamn plot of Digimon World Next Order!

Seriously wtf is up with this series? Digimon World 2 is not the sequel to Digimon World 1, all the numbered games are entirely separate individual stories with wildly different genres from pet sim to roguelike strategy. The real sequel is fucking DIGIMON THE CARD GAME THE GAME and then Digimon World Next Order a bazillion years later for the ps4. In which i am STILL REALLY SALTY that they have a FUCKIN RAD remix of analogman’s boss theme yet he doesn’t appear in the game. The added context of this damn tcg game confirms once and for all that the Ambiguous As Fuck Ending actually WAS him appearing in the game, this unexplained “oh wait the villain was good all along and he was just possessed by an evil virus” was supposed to be corrupted-digi-analogman and seriously WHY DONT THEY JUST FUCKIN EXPLAIN IT!!! this tcg game wasnt even released in europe!! and even american fans probably had no clue it was linked to this entirely separate subseries! You have to friggin piece it together with context clues like the battle music and the fact analogman’s signature mon was machinedramon. I mean vjesus christ Next Order is a litera; sequel with the grown up version of Digimon World’s protagonist as a badass home ec teacher who still defends the digital world in his free time yet you couldnt spare ONE LINE OF DIALOGUE mentioning the name of the villain?? and summarizing the fuckin tcg game everyone missed??? AND CONFIRMING THAT THE VILLAIN IS INDEED MAKING A REAPPEARANCE POSSESSING THIS GUY??? oh god everything makes SENSE, thank you terrible card game adaptation. ehh but i do still love Next Order for making Hiro/Mameo’s canon partner Mamemon, he’s even more badass as this big tough bishie version of himself with a tiny adorable pal that can shoot rocket fists through space and time. (its funny tho cos the DW1 intro movie showed metalmamemon and metalgreymon and the american boxart flipped a coin and decided metalgreymon must have been the one the protagonist was using in that scene. Whoops!)

anyway even with the added context that IT WAS INDEED GODDAMN ANALOGMAN, the final boss fight in Next Order was as terrible as the rest of the plot. So I’m glad trash gramps got a suitably badass boss fight after all, even if it was a CARD GAME VERSION! lets all celebrate the awesomeness of this obscure fuckin spinoff game’s obscure fuckin intercontinuity cameo with the boss fight music that other game wasted

seriously fuckin hell the biggest challenge in that final boss was that i was so distracted by SHEER OFFENDEDNESS at the cool music not matching it that it was hard to keep focused

its not just a great boss theme for a terrible boss, its a really fuckin EMOTIONAL song for anyone whose childhood was fuckin defined by the first game!!!

and look you had a PERFECT FUCKIN EXCUSE for a REALLY GOOD boss battle against MY MAN GRUMPY GRANDPA OF THE COOL DAMN NAME. Seriously guys analogman was THE FIRST digimon villain! digimon world came out before the anime, digimon world was the BETA FOR THE ANIME! this was the first place they had the ideas for file island, so much of the areas in the game are awkwardly mistranslated versions of stuff that would later appear in the anime in a different form. before this digimon had never been anything more than a fuckin 2-bit graphics tamagotchi and this was (after the manga) only the second goddamn time these monsters had an actual full colour character design! all of those charmingly janky 90s gross out show styled tcg illustrations? that was concept art that this game was working from! fuckin hell this game thought up the idea for metalgreymon’s changed design that ended up becoming the iconic partner of tai in the anime. (you can also see beta tai in the manga with a beta veemon as a partner instead! o_O)

oh! and the female protagonist design! thats another rare good part of that thing! i loved the pixellization effect on her ponytal, way better than the male equivelant having a very ordinary costume design just with a pixel corner taken out of his jacket. also why did the plot never actually make a thing out of that? like you’d think that ‘unlike every other digimon tamer i’ve got this scar of my digitization’ would be a plot point. like they didnt give everyone else a cool pixel squares mark! they could have at least used it as an excuse why the protagonist is the Only Chosen One who can do all this plot shit. or if it was me i would have made it early foreshadowing for the Return Of Business Gramps, like you were partially infected by the Oooo Mysterious Unexplained Digi Virus (seriously why did they not just have ONE SENTENCE explaining its the fuckin original villain returning????) during the prologue and i dunno somehow that gives you powers to break analogman’s control on the digimon he possesses. or maybe the pixel thing is like a tracking device he put on you? or just give that cool design trait to the protagonist of digimon cyber sleuth instead, whose entire plot is that theyre a digimon human hybrid with literaly the power to pixellize themself into computers.

they really fuckin hyped up in all the prelease materials that the digimon world 1 protagonist was gonna be in this game and he’s all grown up now. and then he does NOTHING in the plot except babble exposition and stand around your home base. and has one line about how he’s a badass teacher now and his partner is mamemon but hey we made a bullshit excuse for why his digimon is sealed away and he never gets to fight :<

Preorders for the Invincible Camus/archetype fanzine ( @invinciblezine ) are done (at least for now) and we’ve been given the okay to share our pieces! I contributed a sticker and an artwork for my husbando Camus!! I drew and painted the full piece first and then used the techniques I developed on that to paint the sticker. :D

This was truly a work of love, and of testing my personal art limits. My abbreviated workflow and thought process below the cut (if anyone’s curious):

Full piece:

I knew instantly that I wanted to draw Camus with an angel motif because “rumor has it that [he comes back from near-death so much that he] is watched over by a guardian angel” (blame my days in FERP, RPing with @gradiivus). Precisely how I wanted to display that idea changed a lot in the first days of this project--for instance, there was originally going to be an actual angel figure where the cape-wings are now (and that angel was going to be Nyna because Shadow Dragon was my first game, but rules were no shipping or implications of); and the pose was originally going to be front-view with very little thought to background design, let alone using background as composition element. Then I experimented with the pose, figures, and composition (because something just wasn’t sitting right with the first versions), and voila!

At first, I was torn between Camus’s FEH (favorite and the easiest to reference), FE:SD (nostalgia), and BSFE sprite (unique) designs. Not only did we have to choose different designs for multi-game characters, I also knew the white cape of his BSFE sprite would lend itself best to the wings effect I wanted. My only real reference was a tiny sprite, so I additionally based my design off Camus’s old fullbody BSFE art and some elegant (Baroque? just FEH-like?) designs pulled from memory. I had so much fun making beautiful bishie hair, beautiful clothing designs, and huge, elegant wings, despite the extra time it took to digi-line them. (Even though I‘m much better with my Wacom (Intuos) now, I still always start my drawings in pencil because sometimes I’m too AFK and poses are “easier” to fix on paper in my head.) Time flies when you’re having fun, right? But the real joy here was painting everything and pushing the limits of my painting skills. I learned several new techniques here, played with so many different brushes, and also got a reminder of how I need to use higher-contrast values orz. This and my FE Compendium piece are some of the only digital pieces I’ve ever done where I actually gave a damn about how the background looked (mainly due to lack of practice--I tend to do “studio” pieces with zero background more often), and I think it really paid off! The back- and foreground elements together really make this piece pop--I can’t believe I initially thought to go without them!

Altogether, this piece only took about... a week to finish? Definitely under 10 days. This is the fastest full piece I’ve ever finished, and I’m still so happy with it, it’s currently my phone wallpaper. If anyone ever starts a fanzine that involves Camus or Nyna, please hit me up, because (time pending) I am definitely in~

Sticker:

I knew instantly (again) that I wanted to make it chibi-style, and having come somewhat recently off the first Camus Revival GHB and having my initial sticker plans blown by posting my entire Camus bust ahead of schedule, I thought, “Why not make it Heroes-style”? Camus canonically wields swords and lances in Shadow Dragon and New Mystery and he already wields a the lance in Heroes, so I knew I had to go with the other weapon. Never mind that swords are the most overused weapon class in FE. Camus nearly never smiles in his (canon) depictions, but I figured a >:O face would be much cuter. And of course, since my full piece used my BSFE design, I decided to recycle the design onto the chibi. This piece only took me a day or two to finish, and it turned out super cute! Way better than the bust I was originally going to go with, even if this is a pain to cut precisely XD

Chapter 3: Shadow and Light

For weeks after the shadow kiss dream, Phil found himself oddly panicked, as if he’d done something horribly wrong and disaster must surely follow.

He felt like he’d betrayed the trust of his closest friend since childhood … even though it was a person who only existed inside his own imagination.

He sat on the couch beside Dan, each of them staring at their laptop screens, and he remembered those bare ankles on the night after the Brits. How he had stared down at Dan’s beautiful sleepy face and wished … wished that things could be different.

Dan had been seemed a little withdrawn lately, but when Phil asked about it he just said he’d been having trouble sleeping. It was like he went into his own world sometimes, just retreating into his own mind and not sharing with anyone else. Phil knew it probably had nothing to do with him.

Except … was it possible that Phil had given something away? Somehow betrayed the longing he’d tried so hard to keep hidden? Surely not. This probably had nothing to do with him.

But that longing was probably why he had done what he’d done later that night in his dream. Whatever it was that he’d done, since he couldn’t actually remember very well. He’d been thinking of Dan, of these inconvenient feelings that had seemed to become even more insistent lately, and so he’d turned an innocent shadow dream into … something else.

He wished he could remember what he had done.

He wished the shadow would come back, but a couple weeks went by with no shadow dreams. Phil couldn’t even take refuge in his friendship with Dan, since he continued in whatever funk had consumed him since the Brits.

But Dan got into silent funks sometimes, and eventually he came out of them, and things were good between them again. He wasn’t so sure about the shadow, though, because he knew something had changed there, something had shifted in his own mind to make that last dream different from all others before it.

He worried the shadow might actually be gone forever this time, that perhaps Phil had finally done something truly unforgivable. Something even his own brain couldn’t forgive.

He’d gone long periods of time without shadow dreams before, actually. When he was in his late teens, he’d thought the shadow dreams had ended entirely, because a couple years went by with no shadow at all.

But then one night he’d been dreaming that he was making fine cutlery out of flowers, when suddenly the shadow had sat beside him on the grass, so close that their arms touched. Phil had looked at the shadow boy, and tonight he looked like Gerard Way. Apparently the shadow boy had discovered My Chemical Romance during his long absence.

But it didn’t really matter what the shadow boy looked like, because he always looked different … what mattered was that Phil knew him, and Phil knew he felt sad. They could sense each other that way, know what the other was thinking or feeling, and he knew that his shadow friend was hurting.

Instead of the fanciful cutlery he’d been making, Phil quickly fashioned the surrounding flowers into a voluminous cloak and pulled it around both him and the shadow, pulling his dream friend close under its protection. The cloak was surprisingly soft, and the bright colors brought the warmth of the sun soaking into them, and he felt the shadow boy relax enough to allow his head to fall onto Phil’s shoulder. They’d been the same size when the shadow first sat down, but Phil felt himself suddenly grow larger, large enough to pull the shadow into his lap and hold him tight in his arms within the warm cloak, and the shadow boy began to cry. He tried to hide his face as it shimmered and shifted in and out of Gerard Way’s image, his eyes shifting back and forth between hazel and a warm brown, but Phil saw the tears on the boy’s cheeks as they reflected the vivid colors of the flowers he’d wrapped around their bodies.

They didn’t say anything in that dream, nothing at all. Phil just held the shadow boy until he’d calmed, and then they sat together and watched a sunset in vivid shades of purple and orange and green, and he’d stroked his hands through the shadow boy’s wavy curls that weren’t like Gerard Way’s hair at all, and Phil had hummed some song under his breath, something from one of the video games he liked. And finally the shadow had sighed … and slowly relaxed … and then began humming along with him.

That peaceful moment beneath the flower cloak, watching the sunset with the shadow boy, was one of Phil’s favorite memories of his first year at university. His favorite memory from that year, and it had happened only in his dreams.

He didn’t see the shadow again that year.

But then finally, one night, he had returned … and Phil had been having shadow dreams fairly often ever since. Sometimes a few months would go by, but the shadow always came back.

Until now. This time he worried the shadow may have disappeared for good.

It seemed like preparing for the tour took up most of their waking hours, and yet somehow he and Dan still found time every day to sit and talk and laugh over stupid things, and play dumb Bishi Bashi games, and just be them. Dan had emerged from his funk and seemed mostly his usual self. Mostly.

Phil wondered what it would be like to be on tour for such an extended period together. Would it be different than just being flatmates? He glanced at Dan out of the corner of his eye, and noticed a piece of popcorn on Dan’s shoulder. They hadn’t even had a food fight or anything … Dan had just been eating popcorn while they watched tv. How had some ended up on his shoulder, of all places? Phil smirked.

Without saying anything, he calmly picked the popcorn off the shoulder of Dan’s t-shirt and stuck it in his mouth. Dan turned to look at him, startled. Phil chewed placidly.

“Did you just … did you just take food … off my shoulder … and eat it?” Dan asked in obvious disbelief.

Phil shrugged, swallowed, and nodded. “Why waste good popcorn? I don’t mind getting your shoulder germs.”

Dan quickly looked back at the tv. “Rewind a little,” he requested. “We missed a bit when you were eating food off my frickin’ body, Phil.” A flush was spreading from his cheeks to the tips of his ears and down his neck. Phil went back to the start of the current scene, since he’d been distracted even earlier than Dan had.

Dan’s words echoed in his head, along with images he tried to banish immediately. Eating food off Dan’s body? Phil turned his attention to the television with grim determination and refused to think of anything … inappropriate.

Flatmates. Just … flatmates.

That night, he dreamt he was in a wide clearing beside a shimmering lake, a dark sky absolutely dazzling with millions of tiny stars in different colors stretching above his head. He gazed up in wonder, and it took only a moment before he recognized his friend.

“It’s you,” he breathed. “You came back! But … how can you be … how can you be the sky? How can you be the stars?”

The shadow told him, “If I can be a fox, or a butterfly, why can’t I be the stars? I can be anything I want to be here.”

Phil stared up at the Milky Way stretching overhead, stared up at his friend in this unexpected guise, and could find no words.

He felt the shadow begin to pull away from him. It wasn’t a physical thing—the sky and stars still filled the space above him—but the shadow, his friend, began to pull away from him. He could feel it inside, and he tried to reach out, to stop him from going. It was as if he grabbed his friend’s hand as he walked away, except that it only happened in their hearts. The shadow gazed down at him, and he seemed sad again.

“Why did you want to be the sky?” Phil asked, curious. The shadow had never done anything quite so dramatic before.

The shadow didn’t reply immediately, but eventually Phil heard a soft, hesitant, “I wanted you to think I was beautiful.” Some of the stars seemed to wink out, while others dimmed, as if the shadow was trying to hide his face.

“You are beautiful,” Phil said, hoping the shadow would stay, now that he had finally returned.

They gazed at each other, the young man among the dewy summer grasses and the stars twinkling across the inky sky. “I’m sorry I kissed you.”

Phil was surprised. The words hadn’t come from him.

“Are you mad?”

Phil shook his head, confused but definitely not angry. “I can’t really remember what happened,” he admitted, embarrassed. “You kissed me? I was worried that I had kissed you and you were offended.”

“I tried to make you forget,” the stars told him, and Phil could feel how afraid the shadow was, “because I thought you might not let me into your dreams again if you remembered.”

Phil stopped looking at the sky, stopped trying to see his friend, and closed his eyes. He tried instead to just feel him, the way they had always been able to feel and know and understand each other since childhood. He stood there and just felt, letting everything inside him shine out like the shadow’s stars were shining.

He sensed the emotional jolt when the shadow understood, when the shadow felt what was inside Phil, and then suddenly he opened his eyes to find stars swirling all around him in a giddy dance. Gradually, they coalesced into the form of a young man, a man made of starlight, and that man, a shadow man now made of light, leaned forward and pressed his lips to Phil’s.

And it was glorious.

Seven Things Tag Game

So I was tagged by @dragongem777 and @heyjealousyyy for the same thing. But as a personal rule for these kinds of list games, I double it if someone tags me in the same thing. c: So here we go! Here’s fourteen things, technically!

ROUND ONE:

One insecurity: My hair. Considering that I have a terrible anxiety-coping habit of pulling my hair out, I often get insecure if people can notice the patches of missing hair where I end up pulling them out.

Two fears: Tiny objects in mass quantities and the dark.

Three turn-ons: People taller than me, a nice laugh, and... I dunno, but I always thought it was the best thing if I can run up to someone and jump into a hug with them without toppling them over~ :D

Four life goals: Design characters for a game and/or show, get a job that pays well and lets me support myself properly, be able to say that I’m anxiety free for a year, and try a bowl of pho in every state. Because pho. C:

Five things I like: Final Fantasy XV, Ravus Nox Fleuret, Computers, Video Games, and Cup Noodles. (I answered this really fast now that I think about it...)

Six weaknesses: Judgmental with a set of high standards in people, a prick when it comes to people looking over my shoulder when I do my work, I get really moody (like, REALLY moody), I don’t talk to people when something bothers me because I don’t feel like my issues are worthy enough to discuss, flighty when it comes to priorities and chases the muse too often, refuses to eat if swamped with work -- often making self sick due to awful self-management.

Seven things I love: Fawning over beautiful bishies, sitting down and writing or doodling the day away, noodles -- particularly in soups, playing role playing games and getting inspired by them, designing characters and pondering on their backstories and personas, watching TV while curled up in a bunch of blankets with my sketchbook, and thinking about how much I adore Ravus Nox Fleuret (to the point where it’s probably unhealthy, just saying).

ROUND TWO:

One insecurity: Coming off as too bothersome to others by talking to them about things. Often feel like I’m not good enough or interesting enough to discuss things with them, so I usually get really quiet. v.v;; I do like talking though. I just get nervous about being too annoying.

Two fears: Open water and sharp objects, like needles and knives.

Three turn-ons: Sexy typography and motion graphics video edits, people interested in art and intellectual things, and people who are willing to suffer with my constant need for back-scratches and hair pets. Because back-scratches and hair pets. c:

Four life goals: Become well-known enough to have someone go ‘Oh them? I know them!’, potentially starting my own company for graphics design or video game development, having my own solo exhibition in a known art gallery, traveling to Europe to finally meet my favorite PANOPS nerds. c:

Five things I like: Getting messages from you guys because I like being able to talk and ramble about silly things (especially things about Ravus), energy drinks (particularly Kickstarts and NOS’s), graham crackers for breakfast, and sushi.

Six weaknesses: Easy to get tilted or frustrated when it comes to things that just don’t go right, high levels of anxiety to the point where it’s highly self-destructive, I either focus exclusively and hardcore on one thing or I don’t focus on anything at all, a pushover when it comes to people asking me for help (because I don’t wanna tell them no because that’d make me feel bad D: ), I’m overly-sensitive to the point where you can tell me that I have something in my teeth and I’ll ultimately just stop talking, I sometimes don’t have a filter when I get too comfortable and I say things that often are really rude when I don’t think straight, and finally, I’m an awful procrastinator. Like, awful.

Seven things I love: Being able to paint non-stop for three or four hours and create an awesome piece, being able to sit around a bunch of artwork and gain inspiration from it all, eating cup noodles while I doodle and relax, getting back-scratches to relax and ease up, editing a new video when inspiration hits and showing it to others, listening to music and relaxing on the couch or in bed, and sharing headcanons and thoughts with people and being asked questions about my thoughts.

I rambled enough, so you guys can do this if you wish to!

Swagger Bishie idea of sorts where Dash and his friends accept him being gay, but he takes a bet and now he has to convince Danny, who recently also came out as bi, to go to the dance with him. Dash is like this is sooo humiliating, asking a loser out to the dance, especially this loser. A bet is a bet though, so he tells Danny they're going to the dance together and Danny flips him off and walks off. He tries doing the whole jock locker lean as he asks (so humiliating) Danny to go with him to the dance, and Danny laughs in his face.

Dash isn't about to lose a bet because some nerd thinks he's better than him, this is getting personal, so he tries to get closer to Danny--

And in the process finds out how strange, brave, mysterious, and savage Danny is on top of being an absolute dork about things like space, video games, and puns. Next thing he knows he actually wants to go to the dance with Danny.

As er fun and angsty "finding out your date asked you out as part of a bet" is, I think I'd like it more if Paulina noticed how deep Dash was getting and called off the bet. She goes full wingman on Dash's behalf and tries lifting Danny's low opinion of him by bragging about his good points, but Danny is a tough nut to crack after he spent years as Dash's favorite punching bag every time something went wrong.

Dash tries to argue it's not like he likes him that much, Danny is just a little, tiny bit cooler than he thought, but then he sees Danny sass a ghost the way he used to sass Dash, and fudge, he is in deep isn't he? He tries to show Danny how cool he can be by bench pressing or something, but Danny's a ghost who can lift a whole dang bus, he ain't impressed. So Dash mopes and kicks himself for being such an idiot all these years, so focused on his pride he couldn't see how awesome Danny was.

Cue Danny Phantom needing Dash's help after he gets injured or needs to hide from the Fentons/GiW, and Danny finally starts seeing another side of Dash. He is trying, he really does like Danny Fenton, he wants to make amends.

Danny can't forgive him right away... but he can let down his walls a little and let Dash come in a little at a time.

Danny Phantom au where everything is the same except when Danny caused the portal accident, the whole of Amity Park got sucked into the ghost world

Jack and Maddie are absolutely ecstatic

While the other citizens plus mayor are like "Put our town back where you found it OR SO HELP ME, FENTONS"

Danny is crushed by guilt because whoops, but hey, maybe developing in the ghost zone helps his ghost form look more ghostly, and maybe it's easier to practice and master his powers but at what cost

He still has to protect his town from ghosts because accessing those tasty, terrified humans just became 95% easier

Danny's actually gotta make friends and be a go-between for the humans and ghosts because he can't just shove the inconvenient ghosties back through the portal, so, like, with the Lunch Lady they could probably get a deal going with her where she can help supply them with food so long as everyone maintains a balanced diet (and she's updated on how nutrition works so that those who don't want meat can get protein from other sources)

Vlad hears about a human town being displaced in the GZ, realizes its Maddie's home, and is like "Yes! An opportunity!" And offers his protection in exchange for idk becoming the mayor or something but Danny is like "I got it handled, thanks, but I could use your help" but Vlad doesn't yet know why he should care about this pipsqueak who just ruined his extortion plan. He'll just have to show everyone how unprepared Danny is to protect them, but he's not prepared for the town to come to their protector's aid because EXCUSE YOU MR. VAMPIRE GHOST THIS ONE IS OURS, and idk maybe they discover then that humans are untouchable because they've always run away from ghosts in the past instead of standing their ground. Point is Danny would meet Plasmius long before he meets Vlad or hears his story

I just want the towns people to become comfortable in their new ghost world and get a whole system set up with the future ghost king existing governments and gain a respect and understanding for species different from their own

Conspiracy theory: "The Fentons didn't pull us into another dimension-- they killed us! This is the ghost world! We're actually dead!" No one likes that theory

It probably only lasts for, like, six months or a year or whatever, but it leaves its mark on the humans, and with the town disappearing for a whole year/whatever before reappearing again, they're definitely going to get a reputation like the Bermuda Triangle lol

I'm just gonna do ahead and headcanon the Fright Knight as trans

Not for any character reason, but just so I can picture him being born as a noble human woman like Dora, hiding his sex to become a knight of the realm, dying in battle, and rising as a ghost that is unmistakably a man and who will cut anyone who dishonors his new leige lord by using the wrong pronouns for Danny

I've been thinking about the whole Ghost King Danny thing (as one does) specifically about combining it with a Danny on the run situation where he's running/ flying from city to city

He's not running away from his parents this time, though

I'm thinking 14-16 year old Danny is going to think being asked to be the king is actually really cool; give him that ego boost! King? Him? Really? Wow! He might point out he's just a kid tho, he still has to attend school and live with his parents and everything. Could they maybe ask him again when he's 18? But they insist he must become King NOW which is a bit too much pressure for a high school student. Not enough to make him run away from home tho. So final straw?

When they say they want him as Ghost King they mean GHOST King, none of this divided loyalty business.

I.e. murder time!

Still, Danny has fought off ghosts before. What makes this different is they're not fighting him as a ghost, they're targeting his human form, before he has a chance to shift. His ghost sense becomes his best defense. His classmates have no idea why ghosts are suddenly trying to kill Fenton, and it freaks them out, making Danny even more of an outcast because they're now afraid to be around him. His parents try to protect him, but their inventions do as much harm as good. He debates telling them the truth (partly so they can help protect him better, partly so that if he is killed, they'll know its him when they see Phantom) but then Jazz gets hurt protecting him from something that would have killed him, and he makes the hard decision to just go, go now

Sam and Tucker try to come with him, but afraid they'd get hurt just like Jazz, Danny points out they would just slow him down and leaves them behind. Jack and Maddie list him as a runaway before Sam and Tucker get a chance to stop them, so cops are also after him. Danny's friends are the only clue to what is happening, where Danny might have gone, ect., so Jack and Maddie set upon trying to pry all of Danny's secrets from his friends.

But Danny won't be entirely alone.

His ghostly enemies, Skulker, Ember, Johnny, Kitty, none of them want him to be King either. It becomes a twist where Danny's enemies become his allies as they protect him on his journey from the ghosts chasing after him. They work together to keep him alive, trying to remember what it means to be human and how to keep him fed and healthy (but don't get the wrong idea, Kid, this is just to keep you from ruling over us, this isn't because we care or anything). It's a weird situation for them that they're not entirely comfortable with it (Skulker for one would rather just kill and skin the whelp himself before the king makers get the chance, but then he might be King. Ew.) But they make do because the alternative is Danny gaining enough power and prestige make them full on regret ever giving him trouble

I do have a happy ending in mind, but there is of course a tragic possibility for anyone more inclined toward the angst :P

How does Spiderman, or X-On, or anyone speak in one of those mouth-covering suits??? I can’t believe I never thought of that sort of question until now.

Why is it always a woman taken hostage??? Can’t you at least be more gender-balanced in this day and age?

Well, considering Lisa’s power is made for, well, power and the other guy’s power is more covert, this wasn’t going to end well…

I find it entertaining, interesting and funny that Lisa called her wheelchair “Big Wheel”.

X-On did the “draw me like one of your French girls” pose on top of the car, and I can’t. I want that meme so badly now!

Always keep your eyes on the road, people. Make sure you get some rest if you’re zoning out!

Oh man. Calling yourself “LA’s ambassador” when you live in LA is like me saying I’m Earth’s ambassador when aliens arrive.

Can I please stop complaining about how the blood splatter is tasteless?

If you’re in the trade of writing bishies, you have to be impeccable at writing ship tease, and Minekura just showed us why she’s been doing this one manga for 20 years.

Normally, when people have hunches in fiction, they tend to be very much correct.

Why does that Sharak follower even wear that hat? What creature is it even made of??? A raccoon?

Is it just me, or do half of these guys (Kougaiji, his lackeys, Genjo and the Sharak follower) look the same?

“…a bunch of humans can really take all of this?” (Alternatively, the word could be “us”, which seems much more likely now that I think of it.)

The staff really skimped on that one scene where the demon horde is leaping…

So this Dokugaku guy (apparently his name is “Dokugakuji”, but the CR sub was spelt wrong) is…Gojyo’s brother? Didn’t see that coming, the entire Sanzo party looks like only children. Goku is of course an only child since he came from the earth though.

CGI rubble really don’t work here…it looks like a bad action movie, like Photoshopped explosions at inopportune times…like this thing someone once showed me.

Hiroaki Hirata is Gojyo, if you didn’t know, and obviously, Sai Rau is Ura Sai backwards (as done by the Japanese).

…oh, you’re asking me why I’m watching this Ura Sai? It’s because I saw some GIFs of it on Tumblr. Apparently it’s a Saiyuki tradition to do an AU at a Macca’s or something?

As I’m still a rookie Saiyuki-wise, I couldn’t really identify this demon by appearance. I completely understand the fruit joke – I read Saiyuki’s character page on Wikipedia, then came to this ep, but I did something in between so I didn’t remember there was the name Zakuro on that list…haha.

Zakuro has some odd perspective working on those fingers of his…

I was reading a volume of Reload, since I have access to a library with 3 volumes of it, and…I actually know what Hakkai is talking about for once before these guys actually bothered to show it. Amazing.

I literally swore when Nataku popped his golden little head into the fray. Kougaiji’s gonna get a beatdown for sure, especially because Sharak’s scripture boundary should be coming into effect soon.

The problem with CGI is that not all anime benefit from being lifelike. Anything by ufotable is fine, but when other studios try to get a slice of that action that’s not fine. I’ve been going for at least 13 years being used to the flat stye of anime, and calling it home. That’s a tiny fraction of how long anime has existed, and already I don’t want it to change. So please, anime. Don’t become too lifelike, lest the viewers not become able to tell truth from fiction.

Kougaiji does look kinda like Gojyo, eh?

Referring to that link in last ep’s simulcast commentary…yeah, this is if Michael Bay directed this show. Only with more blood.

This is the Teradaya Incident, which happens to be completely unrelated to the Ikedaya Incident…

Of course you get the muscleman to row the boat. That’s just logical.

As I’ve said at least once during these commentaries, there’s close quarters combat late into the game (about map 6), where large swords don’t perform as well. That’s why Tonbokiri is worried.

I have the feeling Hijikata will have to be protected later on in the same way…

Those spider blades sure can run fast, eh?

Oh no. This is advice Mutsu previously gave to the other swords, so having it parroted back to him by his master is really something…

Interesting how Tsurumaru is the only one sitting on the ground, even though he’s got white clothing…

After that one week break, I feel like I haven’t seen these guys (Denki, Ashido, Tokoyami etc.) in years…

Wow, I didn’t think I’d see Monoma again at all! Guys like that get sidelined a tonne.

What happens if Bakugo and Deku get the same score? That could be a possibility, depending on how the scoring system works out.

The gates are so CGI, I can’t even…

Oh no! It’s Deku vs All Might. It seems absolutely perfect from a logistical angle (as in, matching a physically powerful Quirk against a physically powerful Quirk makes sense, since you probably find it hardest to go against a Quirk like your own), but Deku’s faith is probably gonna get smashed like Texas…it is Texas Smash, right?

For once, a kid that like hamburgers and not Hamburg steak *sighs happily* (one character and one line’s difference in katakana). Something I don’t have to whine about, yay!

I’ve never known a person who likes natto, although for Ashido, it makes sense (like Shouto and cold soba).

Interesting they put the dumbest people up against Nedzu.

Yeah, heroes always need a healer if they can get one. That’s why I specifically introduced one of my characters in Half-Paid Heroes, and I often have a grass type in my lineup to compensate for such things (since in my world, grass types specialise in healing).
