DP x DC: Dash
I just realized I haven’t seen a lot of things that actually utilize Dash as a character
Like, there’s things that have a character named Dash who is in it to some degree, but I don’t think I’ve seen something that uses the character
What do I mean by that?
Look at the character of Dash in Danny Phantom, he’s an archetypal popular high school quarterback bully type. He’s the Flash Thompson to Danny’s Spider-Man. His purpose in the show is as a minor antagonistic force, not really an antagonist on his own, he sets up Danny as an underdog “unpopular” kid, and a source of comedy
But he also has a tiny dog named Pookie and fanboys hard over Phantom despite bullying Fenton, and he really likes football, has his best friend Kwan, he struggles with his grades, and dislikes feeling small and weak, something he explicitly says in an episode. There are some genuinely interesting character traits a person can use in a story
And I think that any of the few times I’ve seen him used in this crossover, besides 1 or 2 fics, you could have covered up his name and I would not have been able to tell who the character is because none of his actual character traits were used
Which I think is a shame because there is utility to having him as a character. There’s personal conflict and growth regarding him bullying/having been a bully to Danny
Plus the classic “is a bully because of internalized homophobia and has feelings for the one he bullies” it’s the entire dynamic of “swagger bishie” Dash and Danny’s ship. You could just as easily transpose that to another character
Or even just “makes things more complicated by being involved in a situation where Danny has to protect him” Imagine how tempting it would be to just let something happen to him? The conflict, the desire to just not save this one person
And of course
“Jason Todd breaking into Dash’s room and threatening to end his football career by shooting him in the kneecap, all because Dash bullied Danny”
There’s utility in using Dash’s actual character traits and I think we really undersell him as an interesting character that can add a little something to a story

for the love of god devsisters please put dr bones cookie in kingdom. i want to scare all the genshin stannies. kingdom only players are so used to all these morally dubious bishies and other anime freaks. its all their tiny little minds can handle. imagine their anger when a new update drops and the new character is just a skeleton with a phd. i want to see them foam at the mouth and desperately try and turn them into a palatable flavorless anime boy. i want this so bad its unreal

Haldron-44 Stroika is extremely hot, a gay icon, husband material, and the original Twinkarii. My little meow meow blorbo war criminal, best boytoy, trans awakening, muse, induction into my cyborg obsession, favourite lewding subject
As the commander of an entire Skitarii army, a master combatant and tactician, he was permitted free will to coordinate millions of soldiers and extra weapon limbs to deal out the wrath of the Omnissiah, uncommon for his kind. While handling all this, he is in a gay polycule with Magos Omnid Torquora (kind of a toxic relationship here), Victro-10 Tiberiax (wholesome boyfriend) and Nalo Deka 871 (protective yandere boyfriend who would sacrifice anything for him).
Being such a high ranking military officer and wearing the characteristic attire of the Legiones Skitarii also makes him look extremely handsome. His body has been described as tall but lithe which sounds quite bishie to me especially when you consider that most beings in Warhammer are built like brickhouses and can easily close their hand around his tiny cybernetic waist (impossible beauty standards for regular humans btw). The canon description of his face is strangely devoid of any off-putting features- no radiation scars, missing teeth etc. that you would find in most Skitarii Vanguard. Stroika is so pretty that the radiation refused to touch him in fear of damaging his beautiful twink features and flawless skin.
Tumblr media
In fact Stroika is so canonically hot that every antagonist tries to tie him up or tease him to a point where I am just side eyeing the author wondering if he knew what he was doing. I mean for the Omnissiah’s sake he was put into bondage on 3 different occasions throughout the Admech duology while enemies whisper how they can’t wait to torture him and show him true suffering which is just suspiciously horny
Personality wise, Stroika is a loyal and steadfast warrior who sacrificed his entire life to protect what he believes in and no one can disagree that’s hot and partner material. Just think of a tall, dashing androgynous cyborg general kneeling before you. He takes your small hand in his armoured steel grasp, the crimson robes of Mars billowing in the wind as he swears allegiance to you until the stars burn out. A tragic hero, discarded like a tool by the vast machinations of this cruel galaxy, who still screams out his hate for the enemies of the Machine God long after his mind has been broken by indescribable enemy torture. His flesh may have melted away but his faith and strength surpasses any steel.
That’s Stroika and he’s the best.

The boys’ hands are so big compared to girls’ it makes me laugh a lot
dkslad;jsak it makes me laugh every DAY also, the boy's hands have gotten progressively bigger as Aida hones her art more, fksdljflsd. The girls have little rat hands, the girl's hands look like the hands of the Trashion Alley prototype dolls
Tumblr media
its so funny that when Hanako changes gender this is like, the most visually crucial change
Tumblr media
I also must say that. I feel like. When a scene is extremely horny, loaded, spicey, a boy is looming, dom moment, that,, I feel like the hands get infinitely bigger, Hanako's hands become the size of Nene-chan's head, it feels like. the fetish gets turned all the way up, UNREASONABLY HUGE HANDS
Tumblr media
I think it's cute of her, in that, it's just so over the top. Yashiro's tiny mouse hands sooo tiny here suddenly, Hanako could like hold both in one gigantic mit. gsflgjkfl. its like it cannot be stopped. This is a shota ... ??? a shota's hands??????????? 13 year old boy hands on a 15 year old girl???????? OKAY....!!! SO IT IS...!!
It's where I'm like, "I know Hakubo is extremely dreamboat handsome . Because his whole thing is insanely gigantic monster hands"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
afdfks;rkglh.
there's something so funny about it. Because otherwise, this is a beautiful manga where absolutely everyone has gigantic fat eyelashes, and either big sparkly eyes or scary pin eyes (on any side of the scale, no gender bias), and generally speaking there's a lot of modest or fairly flat chests (not so unusual, but of course some manga are more busty than others). Nene-chan hardly ever has a chest bump anymore (I'd say it used to be more prominent now and again, but she's more typically flat now, even in a thin t-shirt)... even beautiful Aoi doesn't have much. The beautiful Sakura, I dunno, not much. It's not so pronounced, in body types..... ikemen like Teru and Natsuhiko are all broad shouldered or wahtever .... Hanako hardly changes physically when swap'd, but its not like he's an especially masculine boy .... so he's just a sort of funny looking normal girl ... Kou is really distinctly masculine and all, but he's really not the standard, or anything. Akane, Teru, Mitsuba, the Yugi, all would be pretty feminine looking in the context of a lot of other manga's lineups, at least qualify as a bishie, with they doll eyes, but it's just the baseline here. Its not like One Piece or something. A kind of beautiful pretty world all around with some tiny guys , some big guys, and levels of grace for any and all.
but the great dividing factor ........... hands ..................... Amane can be all shrimpy and doe eyed, but he big gnarly man hands lol ....
sooo funny. Aida why this lol... so distinct lol ...
I actually think guy's hands VARY a bit more, girls kindof all be having the same sweet little rat hands, but like... Mitsuba's hands ... are .... not likely to be drawn crazy fucked up, they ARE in the 'boy' category, but also they're like, next to Kou's horrible mitts, so they are comparatively small lol. and I don't feel like there's often much occasion/context they get so big (idk. it's a dom thing for them to get giant. and he's a maso.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
~relatively feminine and not huge but still boy~ VS Kou a scary gorilla
Tsukasa's hands are sometimes drawn a bit thinner/smaller lol, less blunt, but still within the range of 'boy' lol.... (my icon: a case study of this) ... its all so whims it feels like lol ....

So a close friend of mine is losing their home. I’m scared for them. They’re in a lot of categories that make them vulnerable, including Hispanic, trans, and disabled. Their building was suddenly sold and all the tenants are being kicked out.
And I know this friend well enough to know this situation is extremely bad for their health. They’re in another state so I can’t even do much to help them from here. But what I can do is spread the Gofundme that me and others convinced them to make. They’re asking for $1000 to cover a security deposit and other moving expenses, and in their area that’s more than reasonable.
Please look at this link if you can spare some money. Anything helps. Thank you.

Komui: Oh dear, seems you already have! Komui, side: I say, good shot. Komui: Terribly sorry you had such a fright. It really is quite alarming, I know. I understand~~~ Komui: Our Hevvy is quite imposing, isn't she? 6 Komui: But all new Exorcists must have their Innocences examined by Hevlaska. Regulations, you know.
Allen: You could have mentioned that a bit earlier!! Allen: What in the world is Innocence, anyway?
♦ 180
Komui: Allow me to explain. Komui: As Innocence will be vital to the coming battle, it is profoundly relevant to Exorcists such as yourself. Komui: This information 7 is known only to the Black Order, the Vatican, Komui: and the Millennium Earl. Komui: It all began about a hundred years ago Komui: with the discovery of a single Cube. 8
♦ 181
Cube: To those who will live in the days to come... Cube:
We are those who won victory over the darkness, and are now falling to ruin and extinction ourselves. So that ye might be saved should the calamity come again further along the road, we leave this message.
9 Komui: Written upon it was a single prophecy from an ancient civilization, Komui: and instructions for the handling of a certain substance.
♦ 182
Allen: Substance? Komui: That which the Cube was made up of. Komui: They called it "God-crystal", and it was suffused with strange power. 10 Komui: We here call it "Innocence". Komui: Please look to the cross in your left hand.
Allen: !!
Komui: An "anti-Akuma weapon" is Innocence that has been processed and given form to suit its purpose.
♦ 183
Komui: When the Millennium Earl appeared with his demonic cohort, those who inscribed the Cube used Innocence to fight back against him, and eventually, they were victorious.
Allen: The Earl...!!
Komui: Not longer after, however, the world was destroyed. Komui: About 7000 years ago, this was. I'm referring to the Old Testament tale of Noah and the Flood, if you're familiar. Komui: The inscription on the Cube calls that the "Three Days of Darkness". 11 Komui: According to the Cube's prophecy, Komui: the world will once again, guided by the Earl, bring the apocalypse down upon itself. 12 Komui: A second coming of the Three Days of Darkness! 13
♦ 184
Komui: A hundred years ago, just as the prophecy forewarned, the Earl returned. 14 Komui: In response, the Vatican opted to heed the rest of the Cube's instructions. Komui: Specifically, "revive the Innocence" and "establish the Black Order". 15
Cube: Gather the Apostles! Each Innocence will choose one and only one Apostle to bear it. Cube: Namely, its "Accommodator"! Cube: Should its Accommodator pass away, the Innocence will no longer initialize.
Komui: That's what you are, as an Exorcist: an Innocence Accommodator.
♦ 185
Komui: But the Earl has not forgotten the past either. Komui: He has returned, and is building an army with which to kill God. Komui: That is what the AKUMA are. Komui: Weapons, black to answer our white, made from the opposing substance: Dark Matter. Komui: As they evolve, that substance matures and becomes increasingly powerful. Komui: The Earl intends to destroy the Innocence and thus stymie its revival.
♦ 186
Komui: But the Innocence were scattered to the corners of the Earth by the Flood! Komui: There are 109 of them, in total. Komui: Our first order of business has been to recover dormant Innocence from around the world. If we are to defeat the Earl, we're going to need more firepower. Komui: The Earl is on the move as well, seeking out and destroying Innocence. Komui: It's a brutal scramble for Innocence!
♦ 187
Grand Marshals: If we should lose this holy war, that apocalyptic prophecy will come true. Grand Marshals: So fight. sfx: butsu [spotlights dying] Grand Marshals: The Innocence has chosen you. It is your fate. Grand Marshals: Your fate....
♦ 188
Komui: Well, that's the long and short of it. Komui: And the end of my long-winded lecture. ♫ sfx: su [puts out hand] Komui: Let's save the world together, shall we? Komui: You'll not make a dime, though.
Allen: ...Yes, sir.
sfx: gyuu [squeeze]
Komui: Welcome to the Black Order!
♦ 189
Komui: At the moment, counting you, we have nineteen Exorcists. Komui: Most of them are out and about on missions, but you'll get to meet them all eventually. Komui: Hevlaska is an Exorcist herself, by the by.
Hevlaska: ......
Allen: Really!?
Hevlaska: Of a very different... type... from the rest of you, but yes....16 Hevlaska: As the Accommodator of the aforementioned Cube... I have been here since the Order was established... The guardian of the Innocence.... Hevlaska: I have met... so many Exorcists.... Hevlaska: Allen, may you Hevlaska: go with the full might of God's protection....
♦ 190
Allen: Phew... sfx: dosa [plops down on floor] Allen: ......... Allen: Where has Timcanpy flown off to.... Allen: I've... finally come this far, Mana.
♦ 191
Allen: At long last, I've reached the starting line. Allen: "Never stand still." "Keep on walking." Allen: Those words you always said to me.... Allen: "Fate" can go hang. Allen: This... is the path I've chosen, of my own free will. Allen: I'll walk it till my life runs out.

REPORT: Covert Reconnaissance of Division Director Komui's Laboratories
Log entry by: Foreman Reever, pulling an overtime all-nighter.
Hiya, evening. I'm, uh, Reever Wenhamm, the division director's right hand. Today, I'm apparently going to the forbidden floor to do some recon on the director's private labs....
Can I just ask, though: why me? Seems weird. Wouldn't you normally send Allen, the protagonist?
Am I gonna make it back from this in one piece? Will I still be "Reever Wenhamm"?
Listen to all the freaky noises coming out of there. This door doesn't even look like it's meant for people anymore. This is iffy. It's dicey. If I dig any deeper into that guy's twisted mind, I might not be able to do my job anymore.
Seriously... please let me the heck out of here.
Over and out.

REPORT: Permission to Storm the Castle
What an absolute disaster. I've been in a terrible mood all day, thanks to that tiny arsehole they're calling "Allen". Look at what he's DONE to me! I'll get him back next time, you mark my words!
Ever since he touched me with his filthy little fingers, my chin's been breaking out like mad. Augh! It itches! My chin's so bloody itchy! This is all his faaaauuult!! NNGAHHH ITCHY ITCHY ITCHY ITCHY

FOOTNOTES
シンクロ率 shinkuro ritsu, "sync(hro)" as an English loanword plus a kanji meaning "rate, ratio". In this case it's clearly "ratio": to what degree the Accommodator's will aligns with the Innocence's, like frequencies coming into resonance (think of the Dolby SurroundSound thing in theatres, or Venn diagram circles overlapping until there's just the one). [ ♠ ]
触れ知ろう fureshirou, an invented term meaning "to know by touching", as in psychometry. One might also joke about her knowing it Biblically, if one were so inclined. [ ♠ ]
時の破壊者 toki no hakaisha. Couple of things here, since I don't know what might end up being relevant someday.
a) The use of the possessive "no" particle here (rather than the object-marker "wo") leaves some ambiguity as to whether it's meant to be destroying time ("Destroyer of Time"), or destroying using time as a weapon ("Time-Destroyer"), or destroying on time's behalf, ("Time's Destroyer"). Because I don't know which it'll turn out to be, I've written it as ambiguously as possible.
b) The term she uses for "give rise to" is 生む umu, which you might recognize as the same term the Earl used to describe how the human heart "gives rise" to Akuma, which really means "to give birth to".
c) The 者 "sha" character at the end there, which adds the "-er" to "destroyer", means "person (who)". I've never once seen it used for an inanimate object. So either the Innocence is alive and/or a person in its own right, or the "Time Destroyer" it's meant to give rise to is a whole separate person from it (calling it now: Innocence is alive in a sense, but this will actually have to do with Nea, who has never existed in any previous time loop of the world and was brought into existence to break the cycle). [ ♠ ]
感じられた kanjirareta is the past passive form of a verb meaning "to sense". The passive form is what's interesting: it implies that she did not actively sense it herself, but rather that the impression came to her from elsewhere, that she received it like a radio signal. [ ♠ ]
能力 nouryoku, "brain power" or "ability". You've probably heard this one a lot if you watch shounen anime; it gets used constantly during exposition on how everyone's fancy magic asskickery works. She doesn't specify whether it's an ability the Innocence gives her access to or if it's something she as a person could do before it. [ ♠ ]
Komui calls her "Hev-kun", which is adorable. [ ♠ ]
Kanji: 事実 jijitsu "truth, fact, reality" Furigana: ハナシ hanashi, in katakana; this word has many potential meanings, but in this context I'm pretty sure it's "story, tale". [ ♠ ]
Kanji: 石箱 ishibako, invented compound meaning "stone box" Furigana: キュウブ kyuubu in katakana, English loanword "cube" [ ♠ ]
This whole message is written in the same poetic, pseudo-archaic tone as Allen's Innocence invocation ("O cross", etc.), so it's a headache, but a very important headache, so I'm going to go over the whole thing. This seems like a good time to remind you all that I'm not actually fluent (yet).
後生(のちおい)の者達へ kousei (f: nochioi) no monotachi e 我々は闇に勝利し wareware wa yami ni shouri shi そして滅びゆく者である soshite horobiyuku mono de aru. 行く末に起こるであろう禍から yukusue ni okoru de arou wazawai kara 汝らを救済する為に nanjira o kyuusai-suru tame ni 今ここにメッセージを残す ima koko ni MESSEEJI o nokosu.
➻ Kousei means "future generations", "those who will live after us". The furigana, though, are a little tricky: while nochi is just another way to read the first kanji ("after, later, behind"), oi is not a way to read the second ("life, birth, new, exist"). There are a few verbs that can be read oru (which could be conjugated to oi in context), but I think the only one that makes sense here is 居る oru ("exist", in its animate form, thus "live"). So: "To future generations who will exist/live in the days to come".
➻ As corroborated by the earlier line "eventually, they were victorious": the Innocence side won against the Earl's.
➻ The shi at the end of the first line and the soshite beginning the next imply some causality to that chain of events: their dying was in some way a result of their victory. Whether their victory directly caused the event that's killing them (the Flood) or that was going to happen anyway and they're just succumbing to their wounds is unclear. Whatever the case, they don't survive it, but the Earl does.
➻ Horobiyuku means "falling to ruin", "approaching extinction". I didn't think any one word fully expressed it, and it is a compound of two words itself, so I used two as well.
➻ It's not clear whether wazawai "calamity" is singular or plural, but as it clearly refers to the Flood, I went with singular.
➻ The de arou means something like "we fear may", "which might"; it adds uncertainty. This isn't a definite thing; the calamity can be averted if the right choices are made.
➻ Yukusue can mean either "the/your future" or "this/your path". Luckily, in English, "down the road" means "in the future", which neatly catches both. The implication may be that the apocalypse will continue to recur until the world chooses a different path to walk.
➻ Nanjira is a formal plural second-person pronoun, as this message is addressed to a group. "Ye" is the archaic plural of thee/thou.
➻ Kyuusai is the same word Allen uses in his catchphrase: "salvation".
➻ "Message" is written in katakana as an English loanword, which is weird in an otherwise archaic verse.
➻ There's so much information and implication here I can't fully address it all, but the one that seems most important to me is that winning this war may mean doom for humanity anyway, unless our heroes can figure out what happened to the people of the Cube and avoid repeating their mistakes. [ ♠ ]
神の結晶 kami no kesshou. Remember how I talked about the term kesshou a few chapters ago with regards to Akuma being the "crystallization" of someone's sins? It can mean either "crystal" (as in every previous translation) or "crystallization", and the possessive "no" particle does not make it clear which is correct. It could be either a crystal belonging to God, or crystallized God.
In any other context, I would probably go with the former too, but in this one, with the precedent set by the Akuma and all this talk of "reviving" the Innocence as if it's something that will come back to life once all the pieces are gathered... I personally very much think it's the latter. Because I'm not sure, however, I'm phrasing it ambiguously to preserve both possibilities: God-crystal. [ ♠ ]
闇の三日間 yami no mikkakan, "three days of darkness", pretty straightforward for once. [ ♠ ]
Sorry if this phrasing is a bit awkward, but I had to preserve the implication that while the Earl is directing things and making sure all the players are where they need to be, humanity is going to bring the apocalypse down on itself somehow. In the Bible, God sent the Flood to destroy humanity because of its sinful nature, but allowed one family to survive and repopulate. In DGM, the Flood killed the Innocence bearers but spared the Earl and the Noah clan, who are now apparently trying to both kill God and get (possibly a different) God to send the apocalypse again. Just... keep all that in mind. [ ♠ ]
再来 sairai, "return, coming back", but also "reincarnation, second advent" aaaand "Second Coming", in the Biblical sense. [ ♠ ]
This is actually also 再来 sairai. We do happen to know from later chapters that the Earl didn't reincarnate at this time, which only leaves "return, come back, second advent, Second Coming". Most of which would make him Jesus in this scenario. And the Akuma and whatnot the days of tribulation, or something. [ ♠ ]
復活 fukkatsu "restoration, resurrection, rebirth, revival, comeback". That's a lot of potential meanings to choose from amongst, so I split the different with "revival", which could mean "getting it paired with Accommodators and shaped up into an effective fighting force again", or "gathering all the pieces to bring a shattered god back to life", or even both! We shall see. [ ♠ ]
Note that this is "type" as an English loanword, which always refers to top-level categorization of Innocence. Which means she isn't parasitic-type like Allen, or equipment-type like Kanda ("sword" being a subtype of the "equipment-type" category), which are the only two categories known to exist until much later in the manga (and it seems very unlikely that she's crystal-type, either). She's some other unknown type, a category that (so far as we know) contains only her. So that's interesting! File that away for future reference. [ ♠ ]

For once i actually really like the fatui designs they showed off unlike whatever they did w/ the sumeru ones revealed lmao
Well, the Sumeru designs were hampered by colourism issues, which... the Russia-coded country won't have to deal with. I do like that there's more variety here than "pretty boy", "cute girl", "pretty ikemen", "loli" - AKA not much difference up until now, whereas the Harbingers are a bit more unique in general.
Diversity in age range and body type, Capitano looks sick, Pulcinella is a tiny barrel of whoopass grandpa, Pierro... is a whole barrel of worms, Arlecchino... cool... Dottore looks really interesting now that we know a bit more about him...
The tradeoff is that most of them probably won't be playable. That sucks, bc.... Capitano.... :'(
I expect if any of them are, it'll maybe be Columbina and/or Arlecchino, we're allegedly getting Scaramouche and one of Dottore's 'segments' (probably a younger bishie that hasn't done anything wrong yet, we know the drill). I doubt any other males will be.
I like the vibe here. It was a cool trailer. I also want the Childe alt with the big scarf. Give it to me

idk. the hoodie is dash's
[ID: a wintry looking digital painting of Danny Fenton. he is depicted with brown eyes, wearing a stern expression. he's wearing a significantly too-large blue hoodie with the sleeves cut off, which says "I flexed and the sleeves fell off", over his usual t-shirt and with ripped jeans. his hands are in the hoodie pocket as he looks casually off to the side. the lighting and blurry background give the impression of a cold sunrise, supported by visibly fogging breath catching the light. march - just some thoughts
i have read more this month than any other month? and its not slowing down its only 3/12 so i have 2/3 of a month to go and i’ve read 26 chapters. even if these chapters are ‘short’ at 10 pages, if i wanna count by ‘20 page’ chunks i’ve still read 13 chunks so far. and i’ve still got more time in the month left. most other months i’ve managed to read ‘a lot’ i read 10-20 chapters. so i’m doing really good.
grammar is a weird thing? in reading i feel like its quite easy now to understand. when listening or watching - same. and yet if asked ‘why do i say/type X’ or ‘why is it written/spoken like X’ i have absolutely no explanation in my head. i could not explain the grammar if prompted. this puts me in a weird place and i feel like i SHOULD go over a grammar guide again just so i can WORD what i’m intuitively understanding.
this is a bit bizarre to me because within the first 6 months of study i DID read through an entire grammar guide just to get an idea of what i was about to look at, and it hardly made sense once actually reading/watching/listening. i understood the guide fine, but actually Seeing chinese i was still confused. i would reference AllSetLearning’s Chinese Wiki on some basic points, then after 6 months i just stopped. now its been what 1.5 years and - reading is so easy, listening is so easy, grammar wise. none of the grammar confuses me. but i no longer ‘explicitly’ have any idea what the fuck the grammar is. i used to. i studied it explicitly before trying to read/listen. and yet now that i can read/listen, i have no idea how to explain the grammar. i can listen to a podcast and i don’t think about what the grammar is i just get it. i read and just know what i’m looking at. its like english - i cannot fucking explain it. Which makes speaking/writing a bit hard. Because when i try to check if i’m right i have no fucking clue HOW anymore - i just say/write what comes to mind and HOPE it makes sense. i have no way to conciously check for errors except ‘does this feel right’? And that’s not good enough for me lol. So I definitely do need to eventually read a grammar guide for explicit explanations again.
Technically I think “English and Chinese Grammar Side By Side” grammar book would be an excellent one to use. Because i read the first 50 pages of it and it compared it to english (so it explained english too), and it was very easy to understand and started basic then got more involved.
I’m probably gonna use my very old Chinese Grammar Self Taught by Thimm book instead. Just because I really like that book. Then I guess use another after (probably Basic Chinese Sentence Patterns since its modern and perfect for ‘catch your own mistakes’ study and much shorter than Eng+Chinese Grammar side by side).
Anyway I’m in a very weird place right now lol. I know i’m understanding grammar that is stuff I never even studied initially in the grammar guide, but unable to explain what it is, and a lot of stuff i did explicitly study in a grammar guide i completely forgot the explanation for. My reading and listening is GREAT, because all my effort only has to go into learning new words lately! its relaxing! Its the only part i need to do! But my writing/speaking i am very concerned about because being able to check myself for mistakes is something i’d like the ability to do.
how grammar is presented really makes a difference in how well i get it. there is some serious benefit to ‘show simple first then build up what you know’ that text books tend to prefer. versus like grammar reference books that may start with some in depth stuff.
i tried to read a japanese grammar guide the other day and 1 it was great but 2 it covered some ADVANCED stuff i never learned in genki 1+2, and so it was Explicit grammar description of stuff i had literally years ago been immersing in japanese and Still not conciously known about. So i felt. Overwhelmed lol. I felt so confused. I feel like I might switch to Tae Kim’s grammar guide primarily just because its structured with basics covered first. and i feel like until the basics are again glued into my brain, seeing even more advanced stuff just confused me so much i had no idea how to remember it. which is funny because? my usual strategy with grammar guides is to just read it and let what sticks stick and what is confusing be moved on from, in the hope i will later see it again and understand it better. so like based on what i usually do i should’ve just been able to read through it (and i’m gonna try anyway lol). but truly japanese grammar just... my mind does not like wrapping around it and remembering it. (chinese grammar is so much easier for me... so much easier....;-; )
i have been tempted to just Restart Nukemarine’s LLJ (Lets Learn Japanese) memrise decks, because I KNOW they worked for me last time really really well. And they include Tae Kim grammar lessons. And I know if i did it then maybe i’d get back to where i was years ago pretty fast.
I tried Earthlingo app. Its a cool idea, I don’t think its worth it though unless you planned to get Rosetta Stone (since Earthlingo is FREE). Earthlingo features 1000 words per language, taught to you by exploring video game worlds as an alien. Its a cool concept, but since all words seem to be nouns then you aren’t even learning the most common verbs/adjectives. And 1000 words is not a lot. And you could learn 1000 quite fast if using srs flashcards like Memrise or Anki (think weeks if you push yourself, and a month or two months if going at a regular pace). Earthlingo you have to slowly explore the worlds so that eats time, you have to choose to test yourself (so you don’t review nearly as often as flashcard apps), and one test includes walking around the world clicking the object which you’re given the word for (takes time to find the right object). All this means a word that might take maybe 15 minutes to study over a few weeks, might instead take much longer to study and learn. I don’t use duolingo because it generally covers so few words (usually 2000-4000 i think which is good for a beginner resource but you have to do the WHOLE course to get to all those words and i take so long on duolingo that could take YEARS for me versus a month on a flashcard app or clozemaster). Duolingo I also don’t use because it very slowly paces learning material (it takes me months/years to get through 1000 words on duolingo - just personally i go so slow on it, i think faster people would find a use for it). Likewise Lingodeer takes me AGES to get through (and i think covers 2000 words nowadays? I’m shocked Duolingo has more words for the japanese course tbh). However, Lingodeer is by far the best ‘app’ for Japanese grammar lessons in app practice form. Even if basically all the apps feel pretty slow to me in how fast they give you new info. Earthlingo is cool that its free, and for learners 12 and under i think it would be super useful as a way to engage them and keep them studying (since what child likes flashcards? whereas as a child i would’ve loved this). But as an adult Earthlingo is sooooo slow on how fast you can learn words, and it does not even offer very many words (1000 is a nice bare minimum but without verbs/adjectives it can only be a supplementary learning tool for beginners at best).
Link about Lingodeer having 2000 words in a course. (Since its SO hard to lookup how much vocabulary lingodeer includes :c )
Nukemarine’s LLJ memrise decks (which I’m considering going through again but ToT agh flashcardssssss.... they sure do work though agh)
http://www.chinese-grammar.com/beginner/ - this is the site I read a chinese grammar guide on at like Month 3. I am rereading it now maybe it will help me remember wtf grammar explicitly is. ToT (A tip, read Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced sections). Last time I visited the site you just clicked a section, then saw each fully explained grammar point and clicked ‘next’ it was nice. Now its laid out a little less ideal for me, but its still got all the same nice info! (Also honestly if you are a beginner I really DO like this grammar guide... it introduces basic info first, gradually gets more complex, and i could follow its logic knowing like 200 hanzi and 100 words ToT. its very easy to understand even if it takes a while to apply that info).
im probably gonna read hanshe more today. i’m at the point where either i know enough vocab, or the writers style has just ‘clicked’ idk. but now i just am not getting bogged down by unknown words and am just. speeding through enjoying the plot. Also rip me this novel has 155 chapters and im only on chapter 30.
watching japanese lets plays is really fun! i feel like im 3 years old cause i just see nouns i can learn pretty easy in context cause i know the game well, and hear some vaguely familiar verbs, but its fun! also it helps i know kingdom hearts 2 like by heart so. a lot of it makes me instantly cheerful and nostalgic. roxas’s voice is so cute in the japanese version.
oh i almost forgot: I found a book recently for chinese that for it’s like 10 page grammar guide summary at the beginning ALONE i think is more than worth the 4 dollars it costs to get. It has a ton of compound words and its a reference book in mandarin and cantonese (it has pronunciation for both, all characters are in traditional). I got it initally because it as a bunch of compound words and I’d like to get better at knowing a lot of common ones. But the intro to the book has a page explaining sentence structures in chinese, then examples. Its so straightforward and to the point. I love it. The book is “Understanding Chinese: A Guide to the Usage of Chinese Characters” by Rita Mei-Wah Choy. (There is also a companion book for individual hanzi, which is nice but this book specifically I’m finding more useful).
what i really like about Listening-Reading method, and reading, as study activities: no matter how I do them it is only improvement. I have a tendency to ‘redo’ material i don’t feel i fully mastered, or refuse to move on. So when i have duolingo, flashcards (sometimes i can move on if i ignore reviews/make myself do new stuff), books, grammar guides, self guided classes - i have a tendency to redo the material. over and over. and not progress and challenge myself. whereas with reading - every time i look up a word its useful because its new or something i clearly Need to review (not something i’ve actually learned and can move past reviewing). so whether i reread material or read new stuff, as long as i run into things i find somewhat challenging (feel the desire to word look up), i know i am running into new material i can learn. Same with listening-reading method: whether i finish a book or just skip to random books, any new chapter i do will give me new words to learn/remember (until i’ve reached a point of perfect listening comprehension which is a WAYS away). There’s no way for me to mess it up. I can give up a book im bored with, i don’t have to stick to one resource to the end.
someone tell me why professionally made chinese audio books almost NEVER line up to the chapters???? whyyyyy ;-;
Even More Notes lol:
So I read so much in Pleco, which auto pronounces, I have COMPLETELY forgot. 得 地 - for these two, when they’re attached after a description like 淡淡 慢慢 高兴 etc, when are they pronounced di versus de???? i’m pretty sure  得 is pronounced de when its an adjective like ‘-ly’. but for  地, i don’t remember if when part of a describer if its pronounced di or de????

I’m lucky that my other OTP Kirylena (or Kuriari in Japanese) has so much fanart on pixiv even if there’s almost nothing for them in the west, but I don’t know why fan portrayals of them are so weird? It seems like most of the time artists make Alena super tiny and looking almost like a kid, compared to the super mature, tall, and adult-looking Kiryl. Or, they’ll swing the opposite way, and make Kiryl into an absolute wimpy baby who can’t do anything and is completely helpless. I actually bought the (official, I think?) manga for these characters, and I was really disappointed because they did the latter with Kiryl, and he acted nothing like his game portrayal.
It’s too bad because they’re both super competent people in Dragon Quest IV, the game they come from. Alena is short, but she’s super strong, one of the best brawlers in the game and Kiryl is fairly weak, but he’s also a useful healer and is not bad with a sword. They’re equals and a great team, and I wish people wouldn’t twist that into some weird dynamic that is nothing like canon.
