Today I learned about "Black Belt Challenge," a Gameboy Advance fighting game with some lovable charming little character designs that apparently did not sell very well in the U.S. and I feel like that can be blamed entirely on what has to be one of the ugliest, blandest box covers I've ever seen that wasn't just a photo of a football player or a car:
Tumblr media
I could have seen this game right in front of me back when I was a kid with a GBA, dozens of times, and my mind never would have registered it. I would have glossed right over it. I'm not big into fighting games anyway but had the game's character's been more visible and obvious on the front of the box I would have at least looked at the back and probably remembered their designs?! You know like most games, like the Megaman Battle Network games or Mario and Luigi Games or like THE COVER THEY ALREADY HAD FOR THIS GAME EVERYWHERE ELSE WHAT THE FUCK:
Tumblr media
That one eyed metal doohickey in the background is even a character!!

Balbora the completely nonhumanoid fighting game robot was robbed of fame by just one terrible marketing decision and one equally terrible graphic designer

heeseung
when he teaches you how to play video games. heeseung absolutely loves gaming (but he’s said that he loves you more ^^), so he’d want to spread the joy of it! after all, you’d been so infatuated with these highly-detailed graphics and mechanisms, often finding yourself perched on the edge of the bed, watching the game progress from the ‘sidelines’. at the start, heeseung would stand behind the gaming chair, giving simplified instructions and guidance to you, an absolute gaming newbie. sometimes, you’d panic a little and smash random keys, leading to an inevitable fail to your advances — heeseung would giggle a little, seeing you huff in frustration and disbelief from how horribly you were playing. now, he had even generously shifted his set-up to the left, clearing a sufficient amount of space for you to have your very own yn-ified area! heeseung had added you to his friends list, and you two have occasional couple-gaming nights, filled with laughs and cheers.
when he takes pictures of you. heeseung just finds your beauty to be so enthralling and breathtaking, so he’d try to captivate each precious moment spent with you on camera, just for the memories ^^ you’re smiling at a cute surprise he had showed up to your doorstep with? he’s taken a photograph of your cheery grin and crescent-shaped eyes. you’ve dressed up extra prettily for a date? he’s telling you to strike a pose for the camera. you’ve decided to wear an embarrassing onesie out in public? he’s giggling behind the phone, snapping a picture of your ‘uniquely glamorous’ state, probably using it for his lock screen too. he just loves you so much, and wants to remember each second.
when he pokes your cheeks. heeseung had always found you to be extremely adorable, and he especially loved your cheeks; to him, they were super cute, and made you resemble a chipmunk, which he decided was a new nickname. he’d have a habit of poking your cheeks at least once a day, if not, he’d be pretty pouty and would state that he “wouldn’t be able to function normally”. in addition, he’d find the slight widen of your eyes and the rosy tint spreading across your face after the act, to be endearing ^^ you’d familiarised yourself with this habit so much, to the point where you’d expect for it to happen at any point; and when he had happened to forget, you’d personally wrap your fingers around his pointer finger, raising it and guiding it to your cheek with a soft sulk — “gosh,,, can’t believe you didn’t do it today :(“
when he buys matching clothes for you two. it was only after seeing sunghoon buy matching hats for him and his dog, gaeul, that the idea sparked within him. so he’d now head over to the nearest stores, browsing through the clothing racks until he’d spot a pair of similarly-printed shirts. he’d show them off to you with such a wide grin, that it’d be nearly impossible for you to refuse. he’d take a lot of selfies with you, and would reenact cute couple poses on the internet, with you! expect him to come home with a whole shopping bag filled with cheesy matching t-shirts and caps,, and expect to see a thorough haul of each item!!
when he ties your loose shoelaces for you. whenever your laces happen to come undone, he’d always be the first person to notice, stopping you abruptly mid-walk. at first, you’d gawk at him with knitted eyebrows, and would be on the verge of voicing a question, because it was quite peculiar to pause in the midst of the pathway. he’d bend down and outstretch his arms, fingers wrapping round the flimsy material, tying a quick, secured ribbon. the last thing he’d want was for you, his treasured girlfriend, to step on the lace, and come landing on the concrete ground!!
jongseong
when he opens and closes doors for you. it was very well-known, even amongst acquaintances, that jay was a gentleman — someone of polite and chivalrous conduct. he had always been so respectful to everyone; he’d treat others as they wish to be treated, and had a good etiquette! as his girlfriend, jay would take his courteous mannerisms to the next level, always ensuring that you were treated with absolute care. the first time he opened a door for you, he worried a little about potentially offending you by implying another meaning to the gesture, but you reassured him that you were flattered by the sheer kindness in his intent. now, he’d open and close doors for you, even adding an old-fashioned line while doing the slightly traditional act.
when he styles your wardrobe. jay was a proclaimed fashion professional, with his knowledge of colour pairing and styling being being very extensive. he’d just know the right pieces to compliment you, and would help you in picking out the outfits that’d make you radiate even more! sometimes, he’d use this to his advantage, slipping in a few of his personal shirts just to see you wear his clothes, the fabric draping your body loosely. and he’d even fiend in faux surprise, exclaiming, “is that my shirt??”. most of the time, you’d be quite flustered, unsure if you should change to a new shirt. when you’d ask, he’d always protest, telling you that you look better in it, and that you could keep the article of clothing for yourself — an excuse to see you wear his clothes more often,, ^^
when he offers you his jacket. this could apply to several situations — during chilly nights, or during a dinner date. when he spots you shivering beside him, limbs trembling in the midst of the cold, with your thin cardigan doing little to shield you from the breeze, he’d take off his own jacket and wrap it around your shoulders, taking you by surprise. you’d protest profusely, exclaiming about how he’d “freeze himself to an icicle” without it, but he’d just shake his head, a small smile creeping up his face and adorning his curved lips while zipping it up for you. when he spots you uncomfortably pulling down your skirt or dress during dinner, a bothered expression written over your face, he’d take his jacket off, draping it over your lap without any hesitance. you’d be extremely startled from the sweet gesture, fingers gently brushing against the cotton, eyes darted to jay, who was shifting back to his seat. unknowingly, the corners of your lips would raise, and you’d inquire in a sing-song voice, “ooooh what’s this?” jay would gaze off into the ceramic plate, feeling the tip of his ears reddening as he responds with a mumbled, “i figured you’d need it more.”
when he surprises you with flowers. he’d love to see the elated look on your face, and the little “thank you”s you’d say, peppering his face with a million pecks. one fond memory was when he showed up to your school/workplace with a bouquet of your favourite flowers hidden behind his back. he was standing outside the exit after hearing news that you’d be coming down soon, heart pounding against his ribs, hands clammy from all the times he’d accidentally mistaken someone else as you. when you’d waltz out, he’d feel his breath hitch from how pretty you were, simply just walking over to his direction, locks of your hair blowing in the wind. “hi babe! you’re here early,” you sounded, embracing him in a hug. jay would’ve reciprocated if it weren’t for the fact that he was busy contemplating an appropriately romantic way to bring up the flowers. “what’s up with your left hand hm?? are you hiding something, bub?” okay,, now or never ^^ gingerly revealing the surprise, it had caused a soft gasp to be elicited from you — it was so sweet of him,, especially after a horrible day at school/work. muttered swoons from passers-by could be heard, and it went well with the thumping of your heart — that’s your boyfriend <3
when he makes playlists fit for your music taste. jay had always been very attentive to your words, making it a point to catch every minute detail. you could be rambling on about something trivial, like how someone snatched the last waffle in front of your eyes, and he’d pay absolute attention to you. that was also the reason why he knew you so well — including your preferred music genres! jay was an avid music-lover as well, so he was able to recommend some good tunes to you, ones that reminded him of you ^^ he’d gotten slightly worried if you’d be unable to catch all the music titles, especially the longer and more complicated ones, so he decided to make playlists for you — easier to share to your account too! you could be preoccupied with something, and he’d whip out his phone, already typing in your name, or a nickname of yours, followed by a ‘part 4.8’ (the number changes with each playlist made!), as the playlist’s title. after he was done with song queues and orders (because he wanted the experience to be as amazing as possible,,), he’d show it off to you, playing it on the speakers with the brightest grin, and a small, silly shimmy! though he’d probably cover his face after it, feeling very very embarrassed,, and you’d smile so hard at the sight of him :))
jaeyun
when he offers you an earpiece during train rides. you two absolutely loved train rides, always found them to be enjoyable, especially in each other’s company — perhaps it was because you two met at a train station, after you courageously approached him for navigation assistance, and barely got any information back because he was equally as confused as you were,,, so you two just got on a random train and hoped for the best! now that you were in a relationship, you two found regular train rides, paired with some music, to be a ‘tradition’ of sorts. and truth be told, you were kind of forgetful, always leaving your bluetooth earphones uncharged, and your wired ones lying on your desk — but not to worry, because jake was there to save the day! he’d often offer you an earpiece, to which you’d gratefully accept. he’d play your favourite songs, which complimented the low chatters of the public, and the muted rattling of the train on its tracks ^^
when he pecks you on the lips. jake adores you, and everything about you, including your lips, which would curve up into the prettiest, and most precious smile he’d ever seen in his entire life — and that was a unique combination with his love for physical affection ^^ he loved leaving kisses on your velour-soft lips, but he loved your reactions even more. it was endearing seeing your eyes glint with newfound astonishment, your face lighting up from the mere gesture. he’d giggle at the sight, leaning in to peck your lips once more.
when he watches horror movies with you. jake and you shared many things in common, but one point that truly stuck out for being immensely similar was the fact that you two were renowned scaredy-cats. any slight contact would initiate a harsh flinch of surprise, and a sharp turn of the heel to detect potential ‘monsters’ lurking behind. though you two couldn’t stand a single jumpscare, you found horror movies to be inexplicably amusing, and quite intriguing — the plots were mostly good, and could have a mysterious twist with a large impact. that was why you two agreed to watch them together, because two scaredy-cats totally equate to a good idea! mid-way through the movie, your concentration wouldn’t even be on the television, but rather the ‘mini competition’ on who could tug, and pull the blanket up first. in the end, you two cowered beneath the thin material, limbs messily wrapped around one another in a questionable attempt of a hug.
when he sleeps in with you. it wouldn’t be done on purpose, but being sprawled out on your bed, whilst gently tracing jake’s features, and playing with his messy morning-hair seemed more appealing, especially when compared to folding the laundry. legs stretched out, blanket now residing on the cold wooden planks, you two shared a unified giggle — it wouldn’t hurt to lay in bed for a little longer ^^
when he plays with your hair. it had all started when jake found interest in hairstyling, scouring the internet for easy-to-understand tutorials on how to do certain styles, like braids! at first, he considered purchasing a mannequin head, and sticking a wig on it, but the thought of seeing such a sight in the middle of the night, especially while unsuspectingly refilling his glass with water, was mortifying, so he decided to not opt for that. seeing his bent-over posture, and his fingers, which were struggling to grasp onto those stray yarns, you frowned a little. hence, you offered for him to experiment round with your hair, allowing him to try out his newly learnt techniques ^^ it wasn’t something to grumble about though,, you actually found it to be relaxing. jake had been super elated about this, buying little clips with little cinnamon roll charms pasted on them, and even some butterfly ones as well! he’d ‘decorate’ and ‘spruce up’ the hairstyle in his own jake-way! :)
sunghoon
when he gives you shoulder massages. he’d see your tensed-up shoulders and the slight tremble of your pen, and know that something was troubling you. “want me to give you a shoulder massage, cupcake?” he’d ask all of a sudden, his honey-like voice resounding in the room, giving you internal serenity almost immediately. he wouldn’t be the best at it, so at times, he’d accidentally tickle your neck, causing numerous giggles to erupt from your lips ^^ but the feeling of being in his reassuring hands, and the little kisses he’d leave on the top of your head, did measures to calm you down <3
when he plays with your fingers. sunghoon would be cuddling you in bed, and would absentmindedly begin fiddling with your fingers, fingertips gently brushing against yours. he’d find it entertaining to trace the lines on your palm, and would occasionally intertwine fingers with yours ^^ a plus was when you wore rings, the dainty metal complimenting your skin tone perfectly. he’d love fidgeting with the small accessory, twisting and turning it around softly round your finger, with a sleepy excuse of “the pattern’s not facing the right way”, even though it was a plain stacking ring. he just loved finding open opportunities to play with your fingers :)
when he tucks you into bed. at times, you’d insist to continue watching your movie on the couch, despite being half-asleep and barely comprehending the subtitles. and when sunghoon walks back into the living room for his phone charger, he’d see you knocked out on the uncomfortably shaped couch, half of your body hanging off the chair. of course, he wouldn’t leave you ‘hanging’, quite literally! scooping you up in his arms, he’d attempt to tiptoe his way to your shared bedroom, careful not to make unnecessary noises. gently laying you on the sheets, he’d pick up the abandoned blanket, draping it over your curled-up body (because he didn’t want you to feel cold in the middle of your rest ^^) planting a kiss on your forehead, he’d whisper a short, “good night, love,” before switching off the lights, and closing the room door.
when he has karaoke nights with you. sunghoon loves to do karaoke, to belt out slightly incorrect lyrics to an instrumental, to try his best to achieve a high-score of (hopefully) 90 and above — he knew he was good, didn't want to discredit himself, y'know? once while passing by your room, he had happened to catch soft mumbles and hums, as well as a familiar song playing as the backtrack — no way,,, was yn... singing?! instantly, he'd burst into the room, receiving a pillow to the face and a high-pitched "AHHH—!! WHAT THE???" he'd suddenly begin singing praises of your voice, and would pull you in for a random hug with a "why didn't you tell me you could sing THAT amazingly??" from then on, he'd invite you to his weekly karaoke sessions, and would cheer you on from behind, doing weird dance moves to match the beats of the songs — "wahhh, that was the most angelic thing i've ever heard!!", and you'd reply with a reddened face, "stop it, oh my god.." (but he'd keep going because he feels like you deserve the recognition ^^)
when he sends you loving text messages. he’d often check up on you, asking you questions like, “have you eaten yet, love? make sure you eat the lunch i packed okayy?? it may not be the best but i tried :(“ or “how’s your day baby~? mine’s kinda bad because i haven’t seen you in foreverrrr…” in addition, he’d love to compliment you, both verbally and through text. you could be seated slightly further away from him, and would receive a notification from the texting app, reading, “wowowowowo are you really my girlfriend?? i must’ve saved an entire village in my past to have you in my life <3”, or even “you look so beautiful today, cupcake!” you’d wind up chuckling from those messages, finding those knowing glances he’d send you, as adorable as the texts.
seonwoo
when he hugs you. sunoo approaches you for daily hugs, always. he finds your presence to be soothing, and always melts when your arms wrap around his build, face nuzzled against his shirt — you were really his personified serotonin booster. there were times when sunoo would sneakily, or rather, not so sneakily, steal a hug. you’d be trying to adjust your necklace, neck retracted to hook the clasp into the jump ring, and he’d wobble right up to you. “need some help, bub?” taking your chain necklace in his hands, he’d swiftly hook it at a comfortable length, before leaning in for a hug, hands wrapped around you. “oh-!” “a way to thank me~ hehe.”
when he reads you snippets of his favourite books. sunoo was a wide-reader, and found himself to be easily immersed in the stories being unveiled in the form of words and texts. he had an entire bookshelf dedicated to his favourite reads, the ones he wished he had the ability to erase his memories of, just so he could reread them without knowing the endings. he even decorated the area with potted plants and photo frames to make it feel more cozy. it was quite obvious that he took pride in his collection ^^ though he was a tad bit particular about his prized books, he’d allow you to roam the selections freely. through his generosity (and hint of partner privilege :0), you’d developed a love for books as well! hence, every night, sunoo would read excerpts of his favourite paragraphs, or even share impactful sentences and phrases, with you :)
when he orders food for you. if someone were to quiz sunoo on your food likings, he'd probably ace it with flying colours — being late-night snack buddies, he knew your comfort foods, your favourite ice-cream flavours, and even your preferred nostalgic childhood snacks. at times, you’d have to come home late due to extracurriculars / additional work, hence you’d be unable to purchase your dinner, or even a little sandwich to sustain throughout the winding walk to the apartment building. seeing the dwindling biscuit storage, he’d probably figure out that you’d been resorting to those small cookies as a substitute for dinner. hence, he’d order a plentiful meal for you, adding on a copious amount of side-dishes (only the ones you liked, of course!). he’d lay the containers out neatly on the dining table, and would patiently wait for you to come home :(((
when he writes encouraging phrases, and draws on your wrist. after hearing you open up about your insecurities and concerns, sunoo would try every means to lift the mood, and to give you some encouragement during challenging times! he’d shower you with kisses, and offer comforting cuddles, but he’d know that actions alone wouldn’t leave a lasting reminder for you; he’d then pick up an easily erasable (and non-toxic!!) marker, writing little phrases like, ‘fighting!!’, and ‘i knew you could do it!’ on your wrist. he’d even draw tiny smiley-faces too! :) sunoo really adores you, and wants you to know that he’ll be there with you, no matter what.
when he buys you chocolates and plush toys. having a really bad day? sunoo would personally head down to the nearest shopping mall, even if it were later at night, and would purchase a new plush toy, as well as your favourite chocolates! he didn’t want you to fall asleep with troubling thoughts and conflicting emotions, and he certainly didn’t want to see you cooped up on the bed, body leant against the headboard in sorrow, after not getting a wink of sleep, either. he’d come home, hands full of comfort items, and would stay up (even though he was starting to fall into a state of exhaustion) trying to brighten your spirits <3
jungwon
when he sends you cat videos and pictures. jungwon was quite well-known for his love for cats, and he even had cat themed objects lying round the house — like an alarm clock, with two pointy ears and a squiggly tail. unfortunately, he was allergic to them, and could not adopt one for himself :(( so, to reduce the disappointment, he’d watch random videos of cats on the internet, often giggling at how adorable they were. downloading the videos, he’d forward them over to your number, with a little message of ‘good night ynnnn!’. at first, he’d send videos and separate messages, but after learning from the internet, he’d mastered the skill of editing texts onto photographs. hence, he now sends five cat pictures a day, all having notes like, ‘i think i love you too much. is that possible? i feel like i should slow down’, or ‘can you please make me sandwiches the way you do? with the diagonal cuts and all? pleaseeee i miss ur cooking :(“ unbeknownst to him, you’d be saving each one into your photo gallery, organising them into a folder, tilted ‘won’s goofy behaviour…’
when he invites you on nightly walks. after finding out about your love for walks, he’d invite you to accompany him on his late-night trips round the neighbourhood, hands intertwined with one another. it’d be pretty quiet out, considering the point that many would be prepping for bedtime,, so it wouldn’t be crowded or anything, just the way jungwon liked it ^^ he’d take in the idyllic sceneries, and appreciate the littlest details of nature with you, amusingly gazing at a flowery shrub to point out your favourite blossoms amongst the bunch :)
when he brings you on cafe-hops. jungwon would only do this once a month, considering the amount of money needed for it, but it’d be the most action-packed, eventful, lovely day ever! do you like studio ghibli? well, lucky you, because jungwon managed to find a studio ghibli themed cafe nearby, one selling spirited-away cakes, and totoro macaroons! do you like sanrio? lucky you again, because jungwon just chanced upon a website advertising a sanrio themed cafe, one selling sanrio desserts, and a whole bunch of merchandise! oh,, did you say you liked mushrooms? well, jungwon found a fairy-themed cafe with mushroom latte art, and and, mushroom stools!! he’d be so elated, bringing you round his researched eateries, and ticking off his itinerary for the day ^^ coming home, you two would slump into the couch, legs aching from all the rewarding walking.
when he draws you. though jungwon didn’t pride himself to be an excellent artist, he wanted to try sketching you,, just for his little scrapbooking hobbies ^^ you’d be completely immersed in pouring the accurate amount of milk into the measuring cup, and the right amount of flour into the bowl, that you wouldn’t notice the boy sat on the dining table, a sketchbook and pencils sprawled out in front of him. he’d try his very very best drawing you, because he wanted to capture as much of your beauty as possible! though it’d look a little off, and slightly stick-man like, he’d pridefully cut it out, pasting it onto a brand new scrapbook page, with the header ‘ynie’s baking me cookies again,, hope they aren’t burnt this time hehe’. he’d shade the drawing in with mismatched colour-pencil brands, and a drying black marker, hoping that he wouldn’t mess the entire thing up by taking the bold move. and of course, a storybook replaced by a scrapbook for storytelling :)
when he writes you love letters. jungwon would drop in handwritten letters ever so often, leaving them on your desk, or under your pillow — it’d be an entire treasure hunt really,, which jungwon liked because it made everything more interesting! … and maybe because he didn’t want you to wind up reading the sweet note in front of him,,, he’d probably shrivel up from all the corny jokes he’d chosen to include. but of course,,, “ahem ahem, to my little burri—“ “OH MY— bubb :(( i said to read it when you’re alone!”
riki
when he learns your hobbies. there had been several occasions when you’d share your updates on a project in progress, or even proudly mention the improvement you’d managed to make,, but riki found it upsetting that he couldn’t fully comprehend those complicated and baffling terms — he really wanted to say something of relevance to the topic, but he was absolutely clueless. so, he’d make the choice to learn the works of your hobbies, wanting you to open up more about your veiled passions ^^ while filling him in about what you’d done, he’d suddenly blurt out a complex word, explaining it in as great of a way possible (especially with his limited knowledge). “woah… how did you…?” “what can i say, i’m super awesome, cool, good-looking, AND a genius. boom.” no, but he’d genuinely be fascinated by your hobbies, and might even start taking them up as fun pastimes! (receiving your help too keke)
when he accompanies you to concerts. the troubles and frustrations of purchasing concert tickets, either online or offline, are mostly common — the website crashes, a code doesn’t work, payment’s not going through the system, having to stand under the scorching sun; but thankfully for you, riki would be there to support you, trying his best to land desired seats ^^ “OH MY GOD I GOT THEM BABE!!!” “—huh?! ARE YOU FOR REAL?????” ,,, and of course, he’d tag along, given the fact that he likes the artist as well! once at the venue, he’d probably be super confused seeing masses of people move at different directions, but he’d make it a priority to shield you from the crowd, worried if you’d get pushed away with them. when the concert starts, riki would most likely jam out to the music, and might even yell out lyrics with you, large smiles adorning his delicate features :)
when he teaches you how to dance. riki loves dancing, and is insanely talented at it as well — his technique, his flow, his body control, they were all heavily commendable ^^ after hearing you chat about “wanting to attend a dance class”, he’d immediately jump up from the bed, the action looking unusually animated. “i was waiting for the day you’d say this,,, mura’s 25/8 dance studio is open~!!” and you’d just stare at him, a glint of startle clouding your orbs. he’d go through the basics with you, starting off with simpler moves — and somehow, you’d still manage to stumble… holding an arm out, or gently grabbing your shoulder, he’d help you steady your balance, acting more like a supportive railing. and when you’d get the short routines perfectly right, he’d start cheering, and would abruptly begin billy-bouncing, little “aye”s falling from his lips. but all silliness aside, he’d grin so widely, to the point where his jaw would start to ache — he loved that you two shared a similar passion for dance ^^ (and he’d definitely teach you more complicated choreographies,,, and maybe you two could film dance cover videos together? hehe)
when he pats your head. this could be for two different reasons — as a playful way to tease you, or as a loving, affectionate gesture. there was one thing for sure though — that unfortunately, riki was blessed with the height of a streetlight (okay, not that exaggerated, but still..). it wasn't like you were short,,, it was just that he was way taller! when complaining to him about the disappearance of your donut, which you had specifically kept in the fridge with a large post-it stuck to it, he'd flash a sheepish smile, outstretching his arm to give you a pat on the head, slightly ruffling the top of your hair. "i KNEW yo— uh..." "hehe, you're so cute, dumpling." not the right moment, riki >:( or, he'd pat your head as a means to congratulate you, to signify that he was proud of your achievements and success — kind of like a “woahh, that’s my girlfriend everyone!! yep yep, i’m her boyfriend!" type of manner.
when he holds your hand. riki loves your hands — they looked so delicate, and fit perfectly with his! ^^ he claimed that it was "destiny", and that he must've been fated to meet you. sometimes, you’d tease him for it, wiggling your fingers to break free from the interlocked hold, before stuffing them into the side-pockets of your pants. a large frown would play on his lips, followed by an incoherent noise, and the cross of his arms. “hmph—! fine, i guess you don’t fancy your boyfriend’s affection :(“ you’d instantly protest, words of reassurance spilling out of your mouth. “huh?? NO NO i didn’t mean it in that way..!!” you’d raise your hand up, shaking it furiously to contradict your previous actions. he’d glance over at you, before unfolding his arms to resume the lovely hand-holding. in all seriousness, you loved intertwining fingers with riki — it gave you a sense of warmth and familiarity that you wouldn’t trade for the world.

One Gift Can Change the World
(A story written for @tf-lover for the annual story exchange)
The world was a blur, as Erica zoomed by. She was driving home in a rush. The day had dragged on, and her professor was the cherry on top of pile shit that today had turned out to be. Unfortunately, her ass of a professor wasn't the only problematic man she had to face. On a daily basis, there was a parade of men that would at best annoy her and, at worst, make her wish she was not a girl. Don't get me wrong. She loved being a girl. Well, she loved being a Tom Girl. But even with her best attempt of dressing and acting tough, there were always guys trying to hit on her ... make her act like “a real woman,” Stop hiding her beauty by dressing like a “dyke,” and let a man protect her. But, she didn't need a man’s protection. She'd taken out guys twice her size. But, all people saw when they looked at her was a small and weak 4’9 girl.
Tumblr media
Although, she wouldn't lie. She often fantasized about being a man. And, not just any man. She wanted to be seen tough on the outside like she felt on the inside. Yeah, if she was a man, she'd wanted to be ripped and muscled out. She'd want to be the epitome of strength. She'd want to look like she worked out every day of her life. She'd smile at the fact that men would finally leave her alone. She wouldn't get hit on. Her professor wouldn't even dare criticize her. And, if he did ... she beat the living shit out of him without breaking a sweat.
As she drove home, she let these ideas carry her to her happy place. Gaming. The only solace she had from reality. She could play as a manly warrior. She could be the cool space soldier with undoubted authority. She could play with the boys and not be thought of as some girl. She never even considered telling her gamer friends she was a girl. It was her little secret ... a secret made better by the fact she was better than all of them in any game they played. Thanks to the technological advancements of the late 21st and early 22nd centuries, her video game fantasies were even more of a reality. The improvements of artificial imaging, vocal mapping, and sensory mirroring in virtual reality helped to make gamers live a life in the games they played.
Now, she was speeding through traffic on her way home. She was looking forward to the only saving grace that could make this shitty day better. Today was the announcement of the newest VR game. Rumored to be the next big step in virtual reality. There have been a few clips and leaks of the game, but other than that, the games secrets have been locked up tight. All she knew of the game was that it was rumored to have true realism graphics and that if it was true ... it would be the first of its kind. She continued her way home, cursing at anything that slowed her down.
Arriving home, she ran straight to her room. “Hey, fuckers keep it down. I'm gonna be watching the announcement of the new game. And, if I'm interrupted, I'm gonna kick someone's ass.” She puffed as rushed by her roommates. With readied excitement she turned on her computer and logged onto the first stream of the announcement she could find. The screen remained black for a few seconds before flashing to life.
Tumblr media
The screen flashed with the image of The Second Life company. Three colored triangles zoomed onto the screen. They proceed to spin around in a circle, and their points interlocked. The logo began to fade, as a man sitting at an office desk begins to get into view. The chat section began to glow abuzz. People commented their excitement, others shouted out greetings to the void, and others just threw out nonsense. “Hello! And welcome to today's announcement.” The man smiled as he spoke. His name flashed under him on the screen, Nathan Black.
The man continued to talk as he spoke with a smug grin. The attractive features of his face and those most likely underneath his suit helped fill his presence with Charisma. “History has led us to this moment. Our ancestors could only imagine what their children could have achieved. And, Human history has brought so many advancements in so many areas of science and technology. VR technology is one of these areas.Beginning in the 2010s, we entered the dark ages of VR. The first real uses and mainstream-ifacation. Over the years, new technology has been created to make these experiences even more real and personal. Now, in the great year 2130, you can play as a cartoon cat running your own cafe. Zip through space in your own spaceship. Immerse yourself in real-time team warfare. Take on cgi Dragons with your friends. Build cgi avatars to be the person you always wanted to be. Even now, data shows that 10 percent of people have decided to make VR spaces and games their true lives. Spending most of their day plugged in. 30 percent of people report a steady income from VR game economies. The future is now VR!” He stands up and begins to walk around the office. The camera moved to follow him.
“Our ancestors one hundred years ago ... had dreams. Flying cars, instant meals, teleportation services, space travel, etcetera. But, years of human conflict have stunted any progress we could have achieved. Instead, we continue to look for an escape from real life. Instead, we've put money into developing entertainment. We hope to be distracted from the world. Those numbers I've shared are only going up. With 55 percent of people interested in making a move to permanent VR or even picking up a second job in VR spaces. And, why wouldn't they? Everything our ancestors wanted, in the 21st, 20th, 19th centuries, and back to the dawn of time, is available in these VR spaces. So why not improve them to the best capabilities we can. Why not make it more real? Why not make them as indistinguishable from reality as we can? Well, we have. Everything you have seen in this announcement has not been real. It has been generated with our new console. The Second Life X.” As he says that, the walls and everything in his office disintegrate like sand blown in a strong breeze. He now stands in an open cleaning in a forest. The comment section of the stream explodes with excitement and disbelief. A group of people not believing this is real because there was just no way that graphics could be this good.
“And the first foray into this new world of VR is called Fantasy Land. The bundled game will come with the console at launch. When we developed what we are calling Real CGI ... we pondered on what genre would be the first to explore. And we thought it would be best to take it back to the earliest form of fantasy. Where knights and wizards roamed to adventure. Where fairies danced in the woods and magic was in the air. Where people would live to die as legends.”
The rest of the stream showed off new features of the game. The intensive character creation section. Erica could imagine spending days, if not weeks, just on the character creation to make her avatar the exact way she wanted it. As Nathan showed off these features, it was almost scary how real it looked. Nathan's face would morph to have different features. His body would grow and shrink to different sizes. Finally, he reverted back to himself and began to show off some spells, and they looked equally realistic. The stream ended with the surprise that the system and game would drop a week before Christmas, tomorrow.
All the excitement that built up in Erica was instantly drained. She collapsed onto her gaming chair. She let out an audible “Fuuuck!” From her room. She sat there for a few minutes and then moved to plop herself face down on the bed. “Fuck! Today couldn't just be a bit better.” As she lied there in self pity, she could hear her door squeak open. “Erica!!! Did you see it! Did you see the announcement!” She didn't even need to look up to see that her twin brother had entered the room.
Tumblr media
She loved her brother, but right now, she wanted to be left alone. But, she could hear the excitement in his voice. And, he didn't deserve her meanness. No, Elias had to deal with meanness all his life. When they were both in the womb, Erica felt like she took all the good genes. She was smart and beautiful despite hiding it in baggy clothes. Her brother was not the brightest, and he wasn't the most attractive man in a room. He was a socially awkward geek. One that she would have to protect from bullies at school. But, now in college, he did have two things she didn't have. The ability to make real friends. Yeah, she had online friends ... but she kept a bunch of secrets from them. But, again, she didn't really like people. So, she was glad that Elias had friend making skills at the very least. So, she could spend more time alone in the virtual world. The second thing was her brother's size and strength. He was the definition of a friendly giant.
“Yeah, I heard.” She sighed and looked up at her brother. “Are you sure? Because, if you did ... you'd be more excited!” He beamed. “No, yeah, the game looked great.” She rolled her eyes. “Erica! Then why aren't you excited ... are you being sarcastic ... I can't tell. Why didn't you like the game?” Elias pleaded for an answer. “Cause, Elias, I won't be playing the game!” She yelled out. Elias jumped. “Why not? I mean, it's coming out tomorrow ... short notice. But we can go out now and wait in line for a midnight release somewhere.” Erica sighed, “It’s not because it's too soon ... it's because I don't have money to buy a new console! I thought it was gonna be a game for SL 9.” Elias looked worried. “Well that's okay ... then when you do get money ... we can go get one. So what if we have to wait a week or two.” Erica fell back onto her bed. “If only! Remember when the Second Life 9 came out ... it was completely out of stock for a year ... and then some people didn't even get it off the waitlist until 3 years later.” Elias sank on the bed next to her. He was also beginning to realize the bad news. “We could ask mom and dad ...” Erica cut him off, “They never would ... you know they are against VR, and they believe it's evil and gonna take over the world.” Elias weakly smiled, “Well ... then we hope for a miracle.” Erica, let those words sink in, “Yup, a miracle.”
Christmas Day
Erica had spent the rest of the week in a sort of depression. Now, sitting around her family as they opened presents, she couldn't get herself in the mental space to be there. Everyone was smiling and getting into the atmosphere of the day. She opened her presents like everyone else. She got dresses from her parents. She got makeup and lotions from other family members. She got a gift card from her brother, which was the only gift she liked. Christmas was another horrible day. And, when it was over, she was happy. Her and Elias began the drive back to their shared apartment. Their other roommates still gone with their families out of state.
Getting back to the apartment, she plopped onto the couch and sat down. Elias slowly approached. “I got you another present ... I thought it would be best to open away from mom and dad.” He hurried to his room and came back with a big box. “Merry Christmas!” Erica was puzzled and began to open it. “ You didn't need... Oh my fucking God! How...” She exploded with excitement, as she unwrapped the Second Life X bundle.
She ran to her room and began to plug in everything. The game loaded up, and she attached the new VR headset to her face. The logo of the company and the game flash by. She hurried to start a new game. She looked down and saw her current body in some kind of fantasy styled inn and wearing barbarian starting gear. She saw options floating around her. She instantly goes to height and begins to increase it. The world around her became slightly smaller. Now, she was standing at 6’4. She looked at her reflection in a mirror. She laughed at seeing her features on this stretched out body. She swapped her gender and felt a zap on the side of her head. She touched it as a reaction. “Fuck that hurt!” The game informed here that sensory mode had now been enabled. And, at that instant she saw her body begin to morph to look more masculine. She looked like her brother, only better looking and slimmer. As her body morphed it felt like water rippling. It felt relaxing. Then she gasped as she felt something pop out of her vagina. She reached down into her pants, noticing her clothes also were shifting to match her new body, she felt her new cock. “What the fuck ... this is new ... this game really went there!” She laughed with her same voice. She winced seeing such a girly voice coming out of this man's body. She began to explore voice options until she found one she liked. She looked at her reflection and smile. She looked like a hot fuck boy. But, she didn't want to stop there. She wanted to be a man.
She began to explore with body hair options. And increasing her muscle size by adding points to her strength stat. She found it interesting that layout her stats started as. She also found it strange that if she wanted to, she could max all her stats to 20. She maxed out her strength. She set her dexterity to 15. Her constitution maxed to 20. Her intelligence was already 17, so she didn't change it. Her wisdom was also not changed at 12. And, her charisma score of 5 was bumped to 14. Her body morphed to match every choice. She looked at her new avatar. An absolute beast of a man. Hairy, ripped, and good-looking. She was happy as she looked in the mirror. She felt her body, and it felt rock hard. Her cock was ragging in her pants. “Fuck ... is this really gonna be part of the game.” She laughed. She pondered making more changes... but she also wanted to see actual game play. Worst case she could always start a new game if she did want to make changes to the way she looked. She played the first ten minutes of the game before she felt hungry. “Too bad I still have to leave the game to eat.” She laughed.
Tumblr media
She took off her headset, and the world was thrown out of balance. Her room looked so much smaller. She began to stumble and walk. She felt so heavy, and the floor thudded with every step. She looked down and saw her avatar from the game. She or now he was completely naked. The clothes he was wearing were torn to shreds. He let out a guttural yell instead of a scream. “Erica! Is that you!” Elias barged into the room. He looked at the naked barbarian in front of him, hung like a horse. “Ahhhhh!” Elias screamed.
Erica rushed to him. Not knowing his own strength, he knocked them both to the floor. He covered Elias’ mouth to stop the screaming. “It's me ... it's Erica!.” He shouted in a deep voice. Elias fainted. When he came to, he saw the giant man taking care of him. If this man was bad ... why was he still here. It couldn't be... “Erica ...” He let out. Erica turned to see her brother awake. “Yeah ... it's me.” He spoke, his voice rumbling the air with his deep voice. “What happened?” Elias squeaked.
The big man pointed to the screen. The news was on. A woman spoke as the words “breaking news” flashed on the screen. “Reports are still coming in of Body Transformations throughout the country and world. Authorities are confirming that the cause is the new Second Life X console. It is also believed that the company has purposefully set this bio weapon on the public. The Second Life Entertainment offices and Second Life Corporation have been radio silent on the matter. Wait ... just ... it seems like their website has just gone offline. Authorities are asking to drop off all Second Life technology to the nearest police station. Again, do not use Second Life technology.”
The news broadcast kept going. The sound of sirens from the outside began to fill the night air. Other screams could be heard in the distance. But Erica interrupted, “And, online coders found hidden code that was set to activate just a few moments ago. People are saying Second Life has been planning this for a long time.” Elias looked at his new brother concerned. “Well ... I'm sorry ... is there a way to undo this?”.
The gaint laughed and shook the air. “Sorry! I love this! This is what I always wanted. But you probably shouldn't call me Erica anymore... Call me Erik ... with a K.” He laughs “More barbaric. But what about you, little bro ... want a new life.” Elias gasped. “What about the report ... can this be trusted? What about the consequences.” Erik put his huge strong hand on his brother. “The only consequences is you'll be the person you always wanted to. Think no one is going to give this to the police ... the power to be who they want. The world has changed. You can be in it as the person you want or the person you are now.”
Elias grabbed the VR headset and put it on. He began a new game and began to edit his character. Erik watched his brother change before his eyes. Elias shrank from 6’4 to 6’. He began to slim down. His chubby body became more tone. His pasty skin tanned until he looked like an exotic Middle Eastern man. His oversized clothes fell off his body. He looked like an Arab heartthrob. He took off the headset and looked at his new body, and smiled. “Damn it feels so good. And, now that I have raised my intelligence score ... I see what you mean. This is the new world.” He smiled. He raised his hand, and small particles of frosted air began to coat his hands in a layer of frost.
Tumblr media
“Damn, nice body, bro. Didn't know this was your ideal body. Based on physique and that you have frost magic... you picked wizard.” Erik laughed. “Well isn't it obvious.” Elias said with a wit and sass he never had before. “Bro, I think we should bring this head set to some other people. Give some friends some equally attractive bodies. And, enemies ... something else.” Elias smirked. Erik smiled, “That has to be the smartest idea you've ever had. I'm ready when you are.” He chuckled at the thought of changing everyone that made his life hell. His parents, professor, and more. The two men found some usable clothes and walked out of the apartment to help change the world.
Epilogue: Nathan Black sat in his private jet, on route to his secret bunker. In front of him was a laptop with a hooded figure on the screen. “It's been done.” He raised a glass of wine and drank it. “It took a bit more than a century, but it's done.” He smiled.
The hooded figure spoke. “The gods left behind small tools of power. From rings that could swap bodies, plants that affect a person's age, gems that allow possessions, and so many other small gifts” the figure spoke with annoyance. “They always feared giving humanity true magic. But, I have used those gift to do what they didn't want. The era of magic is among us.” Both men laughed.

Recommendation: Apps for Japanese Learning
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Over the years, I've downloaded and tested many apps. Though my favorite app was discontinued (I miss you, mindsnacks Japanese), there are still others that I don't think I'll be removing from my phone any time soon. In light of duolingo's horrible update causing a large migration and search for other apps, I thought I'd share some of my favorites. Also, some of these apps have websites or discords for you to interact with other users or to ask support questions.
For those who cannot use/don't like the graphics, the written out version is below the break.
Lingo Legend
RPG-based language learning game that I was a beta tester for. It also offers Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, German, Italian, and Portuguese. Uses spaced repetition.
Offers beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels.
User can jump between lessons and difficulty levels.

Princess Peach has looked more or less the same for the past forty years, save for a few upgraded details here and there thanks to the advancement in graphic technology. That’s what makes it all the more interesting to look back at the early days of Super Mario Bros., before Nintendo finalized her design for the sequel. There are a lot of Peach prototypes abounding that show off different takes on Princess Peaches that might have been and maybe almost were. In the above image, a Japanese storybook tie-in. I cover every early version of Peach I could find in a post I did for my video game history project.
Interestingly, the top version of Peach has a bit in common with one appearing on official Nintendo merch early on — in this case, a pair of shoes designed for little girls. Both of these versions have a red dress with a pink overcoat and also white cuffs and a collar. To me, this suggests the artists might have been inspired by each other or working on the same Nintendo materials.
Tumblr media
But maybe the most interesting thing I found in putting this collection together is the idea that Peach’s illustration for the original Japanese box art for Super Mario Bros. might be meant to evoke Princess Diana. I’d always thought Peach’s blond flip looked like a two-dimensional riff on Farrah Fawcett’s hair, but given that SMB was developed in the early 80s, not long after Diana’s wedding, I think it’s more likely that she was the inspiration, at least for this first game.
Tumblr media
The “mushroomhead” version at the top of this post is also sporting a hair color that matches Diana’s grayish blond, as opposed to the banana yellow color that Peach would be sporting basically from Super Mario Bros. 2 on. Am happy to include further prototypes, should anyone find them, BTW.

General relationship hcs for Cyrus, Drayden, Grimsley, Colress with gn s/o?
pt 2 to this request!
characters: grimsley (gen v), colress (gen v)
content: gn reader, established relationship, feel-good stuff w/ angst in grimsley's hcs. reader is an elite 4 member in grimsley's hcs, and an antagonist in colress'.
tw: discussion of grimsley's gambling addiction at the beginning of his section, and reader's depression at the very end. nothing graphic, but symptoms are mentioned.
GRIMSLEY
Tumblr media
you meet grimsley when you take his place as a member of the elite 4. you're worried that, even though he stepped down, he'll be resentful...but he's too preoccupied with the fact that you're the most gorgeous person he's ever met in his entire life.
be prepared to spend a lot of time keeping him away from the casinos. while he's gotten better at curbing his addiction, there are plenty of moments where he'll relapse, and relies heavily on you to help him maintain his streak.
it's heartbreaking to watch grimsley's confidence and charisma drain away at the sight of a casino. you pat his face, trying to get him to turn toward you, but he can't take his eyes off the shining lights. "just one spin?" he asks out loud. he's far away on his own plane of existence. you step in front of him and get in the way of the casino, moving your head to block his view. "you've been doing so well," you say. "i'm here for you. you're strong. you're capable. you can do this." with your words, he pulls himself out of this daze, and takes your hand so tightly your fingers start to grow numb. "thank you," he says, his voice quiet.
lots of words. just from those brief moments in the games, you can tell that he's got a lot of control over what he says. he tells you every day without fail how much you mean to him. and when you're proud of winning a battle, or upset at a close loss, he's always there to praise you no matter what.
he has a competitive streak. when you show up to watch his surfing competitions, he's a completely different person. taunts, playful jabs, everything he can muster to secure at least secures 2nd place. he brightens when he sees you, and you have to yell at him to focus on the water. (he's almost wiped out once or twice because he's just so enamored by your presence.)
he also knows what it means to be in a dark place mentally. when you stress, when you get anxious, when depression takes its hold—he never says anything because he knows that words don't always make it through. so he'll just sit there with you, and quietly talk about his day, and ask you what you want for the future. just little reminders that no matter what, this too will pass.
grimsley knows exactly where to find you when he gets home and all of the lights are off. with quiet footsteps, he opens the door to your bedroom, and finds you huddled against the bed, eyes unseeing. he leaves for a few moments, and comes back with two cups of hot chocolate. he sets them down on a small platter in front of you, then sits next to you, touching as much of you as he can without being on top of you. you shift a little, and he smiles. "hey, lovebird," he says. "we have that fancy date at the restaurant in a week. i'm sure you're going to look absolutely ravishing in the outfit you've picked out. they have your favorite foods, too." you don't respond, but you do lean your head onto his shoulder. he wraps an arm around you, and continues to ramble about the things he has planned for the next week. it hurts him, in every part of his body, to see you like this, but he knows better than anyone how much of a struggle it is to even get out of bed. so he leans close to you, his lips almost touching your ear. "you made it out of bed today," he whispers. "i love you." you nod. things will get better soon.
COLRESS
Tumblr media
you joined team plasma before he did. in charge of biotechnical advancements and acting as the organization's resident "nurse joy," it was only a matter of time before your paths crossed.
he's enamored by your intellect. you can keep up with his (admittedly crazy) ideas, and he's found that a lot of the things he's invented are credited to you, too.
colress writes everything down. ideas, notes, observations. it's frustrating but overwhelmingly human to find that you make your way into everything he writes.
"today, team plasma finalized our plans for the plasma frigate. (y/n) looked like the epitome of power standing atop the deck. i have no doubt in my mind that they will stand steadfast against the trials and tribulations put forth by the pokemon league..." colress stops immediately. he almost throws his pen across the room, but composes himself with a deep breath. how can he be this obsessed with a person? there must be something wrong. a quiet knock on the door interrupts his thoughts. "come in," he says, and immediately regrets it as you step into the room. "doctor colress, i'd like to get your feedback on a new device," you say, a smile lighting up your features. "do you have a moment?" his mouth grows dry. oh, there's absolutely something wrong with him.
you have to make the first step. colress would never in a million years admit that he's succumbed to the human folly of falling in love. even when you say something, he immediately jumps into analysis, only stopping when he sees the way your face falls.
a relationship with him is. a learning curve. between team plasma and his own research, there's little to no time to go on dates. he'd rather drop dead than let lord ghetsis catch wind of this new relationship.
but he still makes time for you. in little ways. through small notes and gifts left on your desk. your name etched into the smallest of crevices in the inventions the two of you make. and when the hero defeats team plasma, and everyone scatters, that's when he decides that he's had enough of this life.
"so, this is it," you say as you hoist a bag over your shoulder. "what are you going to do now, doctor colress?" it's become a term of endearment, the two of you calling each other "doctor" even though there was no need once you got beyond a certain stage, but he finds it leaves a bad taste in his mouth. "it's not doctor colress anymore," he says with a faint smile. "i think i'll stay here. continue my research on pokemon. however...i don't wish to continue harming them. maybe we'll find other ways of enhancing their natural strength." you tilt your head to the side. "we?" he nods. he extends a hand out to you, even though you've already discarded your lab coat and badge. "what do you say? will you continue on the path of new discovery with me?" for a moment, he's scared that you'll say no. for a moment, he's terrified that your relationship started and ended with team plasma. but you take his hand and drop your bag. "always and forever," you say with a bright smile. "let's change the world together."

The Alaskan Train Crash: International Rescue, We Have A Situation.
Six months after the return of Jeff Tracy and International Rescue has finally come back off their hiatus. One of their first missions with their dad back at the helm? A mysterious train wreck in remote Alaska.
Tumblr media
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Additional Tags: Artist!Virgil, Post season three, slight AU, Mentions of hospitals, Mentions of Blood, description of train crash, Light Angst
Series: Part 1 of The Long Game
NOTES: This has been MONTHS in the making and, I won't lie, I'm a little nervous about finally putting this out in the world. This is only the first chapter of the first part of (what I'm now thinking will be) quite a large story. Disclaimers to say that I obviously do not own any of the characters in this story. They were created by the wonderful Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. The only things I do own are the ideas and situations they end up in. Trust me, they'll end up in some sticky situations in the near future!
Read it below or on AO3 here.
The Hood’s haphazard approach to his criminal scheming, coupled with a blatant disregard for any life that wasn’t his own, only ever led to one outcome — disaster.
The unfortunate beneficiaries of today’s outcome were currently trapped under the wreckage of the buckled front carriage of a derailed freight train. The scene was horrific to look at, even with all of Scott’s years of experience and training that came with being in the rescue business. The whole of the train looked as though it had been flung from the tracks, and had flipped onto its side, except for the back carriage, which had somehow managed to stay the right way up, and the front carriage, which had been capsized completely. In stark contrast to the crisp white snow underneath the wreck, there was a dark patch of leaking oil developing. As Scott hovered in the air over the derailed train, guiding his jet pack over the wreckage to get a sense of the scope, he knew he had to work fast.
There had been three workers on board. Whilst two of the three had seemingly been rendered unconscious by the incident, one was still very much awake and aware of her current predicament. She had made sure that the receiver of her distress call also knew this. John had forewarned his older brother of the severity of this woman’s pleas for assistance whilst Scott had flown Thunderbird One to the danger zone at top speed; the way the woman had begged Thunderbird Five for help had sent shivers down (a normally stoic) John’s spine. Still, despite the advanced warning, nothing could have quite prepared Scott for the look of pure terror on that woman’s face as he landed himself beside the wreck and jogged over to that capsized front carriage.
Two Hours Earlier.
Virgil had just wanted the lounge to himself so he could finally finish his oil painting in relative peace. It had already taken him far longer than he’d expected to get the painting complete. Usually that was due to rescue missions interrupting him and not his two younger brothers, as was the case today. Gordon and Alan had come bounding into the lounge, as loud and as energetic as always, and then began to play the loudest alien-killing game they could have possibly found. Virgil knew that his easel and pallet in front of him had not gone unnoticed by the Terrible Two, but the boys didn’t seem to care. Or, rather, they didn’t seem to realise the disturbance they’d caused. That was normally the case, anyway.
Virgil should have known that asking for any semblance of peace in the Tracy household was very rarely answered. The villa was always a hive of chaotic activity, even when those rescue missions called half of the family away. As Virgil was usually on call in those situations, he rarely managed to find a moment’s grace unless he was up into the late hours of the day. As it was, the sun had already begun to set over Tracy Island and sleep would soon be beckoning to all of them. He only had a few hours left to get some painting done before Scott had another reason to berate him for staying up late again. Thankfully, Tracy Island was large enough to not only house International Rescue’s operations, but also cater enough room for everyone who lived there.
He had not long retreated from the lounge, away from Alan and Gordon’s loud but seemingly futile efforts to defeat an invading alien race, to finish up his work in his art studio. He should have just stayed there this morning and not gone down to the lounge, but when that room was not occupied by bored, young adolescents, the lounge was just as serene as the quiet his studio offered. The views out onto the expanse of the Pacific inspired Virgil’s creative muse, and the colours seemed to flow so much better on his canvas when the warm, tropical breeze blew up through the open veranda. That being said, the picturesque scenery that now filled his peripheral was just as humbling.
His canvas, he’d carefully carried down from the lounge, had been placed on a new easel that stood in front of a large window. In the near distance Mateo stood, the rocks on the island glinting in the last rays of sun. Far more quieter than the disruption his brothers were currently causing upstairs. Content once more, Virgil started to mix the paints he needed on a new pallet.
He got all of two swipes of raw sienna onto the canvas when there was a gentle knock of knuckles against the wood of the art studio door.
“Virgil?” It was a voice that Virgil had thought he’d never hear again, up until a few months the back, that is. A voice that he was still trying to get used to hearing again after living so long without it.
Jeff Tracy had opened the door and was standing under the frame, his hands sitting idly in the pockets of his jeans. He looked over the artwork his second eldest was working on. To a stranger, or casual observer, they might have been deceived by the seemingly dark piece. With the shades Virgil had decided to use so far, that would have been an understandable mistake. But Jeff knew his sons, even after eight years of being separated from them, and he could see the hope that radiated through the painting. In the background, still only an outline and yet unfinished, he could make out the shape that he guessed would become Thunderbird Two. Jeff could see Virgil’s behemoth of a ship was to rise in the distance, to assist in the abstract disaster that was happening in the foreground. The smile that lit up his worn face gave Virgil a warm glow inside. “Looking good, son.”
In those first few weeks of Jeff Tracy’s return to earth after spending almost a decade lost in the outer reaches of the solar system, International Rescue had gone on an understandable hiatus. The Global Defence Force had offered to pick up the rescue work whilst the family became reacquainted and new routines were established. After all, just having their father sitting with them at their breakfast table in the morning again gave the boys enough of a shock. Despite the stresses and occasional disagreements that naturally came with the reshuffling and reorganising of the organisation, having their dad back was one of the greatest miracles to happen to the Tracy brothers, and they all thanked their lucky stars every day for having him home again.
“Do you have a moment?” Jeff asked, gesturing forward as a way of asking whether Virgil was okay with him stepping into his space.
By the look on his dad’s face, Virgil knew that ‘a moment’ was more than likely going to last longer than Jeff had suggested in his wording, but Virgil nodded all the same. As Jeff stepped inside and closed the door behind him, Virgil placed his pallet and paint brush on the side table beside his easel. He rubbed his paint splattered fingers on his equally paint splattered apron.
“Sure. Is everything okay?”
Virgil was used to being the one everyone came to for advice and assistance in the family. Along with Grandma Tracy, he was the soundboard that his brothers, and Kayo and Brains, relied on when they needed a solid voice of reason. Virgil never minded. He never saw any of them as a burden or a bother. Whenever they needed to seek comfort in Virgil’s warmth and way with words, Virgil was there for them.
“I wanted to just let you know that Grandma will be taking me to the mainland tomorrow.”
Virgil’s heart sank a little at Jeff’s words. He knew what his father’s words were code for, knew exactly where Grandma Tracy was taking him: the hospital. Jeff’s health had been fragile upon his return to Earth. Having had to survive eight years on a rock in the Oort Cloud, it came as no surprise to any of them. They were all wise to the fact that the situation would have been a detriment to anyone’s health, and they all were sure that, had Jeff been anyone else, he wouldn’t have lived through the ordeal for nearly as long as he miraculously had. Jeff’s health had been a major talking point in the reorganisation of International Rescue. The main question was whether he was fit enough to take back the mantel of Commander In Chief, or whether it was better for him to take a backseat and oversee operations from the sidelines instead. Both Grandma and Scott had been firm advocates in Jeff taking the back seat, but Jeff Tracy was Jeff Tracy and he wasn’t the kind of man who was content with being sidelined. In the end, they had all agreed on him sharing the job with his eldest son, at least until he was in a better condition.
Hence the hospital visits. Scans, blood work, physiotherapy, drugs and tests were part of their new normal, and they’d been advised that this new normal was going to stay in place for the foreseeable future. Jeff didn’t mind, so long as it meant he was still able to be of assistance, but the constant hospital trips had the boys naturally worrying.
“If dad is so unwell that he needs to be constantly visiting Doctor Mayhew every month, he shouldn’t be placed in a position that could cause him stress!” Scott had exclaimed on more than one occasion. Jeff never listened to him, always claimed that he was fine which only led to heated debates between the two. Usually it was Grandma who managed to calm them both down, but once or twice, the unfortunate role of mediator had landed on Virgil’s lap. Whilst he still didn’t see it as a burden, it was the only time he minded. It was the one time he didn’t like being a soundboard to his family.
“How long this time?” He asked his father, arms folding across his chest.
“A week. Maybe two. They want to check my legs, I think. It’s going to require a few tests back to back and they say that it’s easier if I just stay there whilst they get the results.”
Virgil nodded. It made sense for him to remain in one place. His next question was one he didn’t want the answer to. “Does Scott know?”
Jeff held silence for a moment or two, and Virgil knew the answer instantaneously. “No. He doesn’t. Not yet.”
Virgil pursed his lips, nodded once… twice, and then began to undo his paint apron. So much for a relaxing evening with his canvas. “He needs to know, dad.”
“He overthinks everything—”
“That’s Scott for you—”
“— and I don’t like how stressed out he gets. I don’t want to add to it, or be the cause of more stress.”
Welcome to the club, Virgil thought, but sighed as he threw the apron aside. Scott never knew how to take things easy. He was a classic overreacher, constantly trying to do more than his best. That perfectionism had only got worse in the months following their father’s disappearance, but that was a fact Jeff had still not been informed about. Their father had developed a legacy in people’s minds, one that only grew in his supposed death, and Scott felt compelled to continue that legacy. He had always looked up to Jeff, but this constant need to try and make their father proud, even in death, sometimes meant Scott took unnecessarily hazardous risks, and it had nearly landed him on death’s doorstep on more than one occasion. Virgil and the others had often tried to slow him down and make him see reason, but their talks rarely seemed to have a lasting impact. Come the next day, Scott would be back to his normal, overreaching self.
“Scott’s capable of handling a lot more than you think, dad.”
Jeff breathed out a long sigh. “I don’t want him to handle so much. He should share the burdens.”
“Good luck getting him to do that. We’ve been trying for years, but Scott is way too protective. It’s one of the reasons why he doesn’t want you being so involved in the rescues right now, what with your… health.”
“I know he’s looking out for me,” Jeff began, his eyes averting Virgil’s own gaze as he took in the view of Mateo from the window. “I just wish he wouldn’t try so damned hard all the time.”
Virgil let out a deep chuckle. “You and me both, dad.” Then, he began to make for the door. “But he needs to know all the same. If you want, I can be your bodyguard.” He joked. In honesty, the thought of having to referee another match between his dad and Scott worried him, but he’d do it if it meant avoiding a bigger conflict in the future.
Jeff’s lips quirked into a smile at Virgil’s humour, but as he opened his mouth to speak, a hologram of John appeared from the holo-disc on the side table beside the easel. “Guys, we have a situation.”
Exchanging worried glances with his father, Virgil dove out of the door of his studio and made his way up to the lounge as fast as possible, Jeff following quickly behind him.

alright so the plot has gotten pretty hard to follow even for me, so let's recap Stuffman's Journey in Game Dev.
GHOST NUN
i quit my job to make an attempt at full-time game dev, and ghost nun won the initial poll for which of four game ideas i would try to make first.
it was a harsh learning experience. though i had put together proof-of-concept demos for various game ideas before, i slowly discovered that i had dramatically overestimated my programming ability, and dramatically underestimated the time it would take to produce a full game of the scope and graphical fidelity i wanted.
i spent the first year of full time dev and most of my savings to produce a demo with two dungeons that nobody liked, and it would not be easily retooled because of how badly it was programmed.
as of today the project is fully scrapped. if I ever revisit the concept it will have to be remade from scratch. (creating a demake with my faux NES engine is something I've considered.)
WAR OF THE SPROUTS (v1)
so after that mess, the idea here was that a strategy game would be much less demanding to make in terms of assets - once you've got your tileset and unit sprites you're pretty much good. right?
of everything on this list, wots was the biggest passion project, which is why i kept coming back to it. being a longtime advance wars fan, this bad boy has ten years of theorycrafting and lore behind it.
progress was still slow due to inexperience, as the first version of the engine was full of hard-coded UI that had to be adjusted over and over again. regardless, a playable build with fully functional units and commanders came together. but progress stalled once it came time to work on the AI, my savings ran out, and I had to pick up a part-time job. my stint with full-time game dev was over.
ASTROLANCER
so, let's go with something even simpler, I thought. astrolancer is (in theory) an easy project to break into small, digestible bits ideal for working on in one's free time (unlike the eight hour debug sessions one must spend while attempting to wrangle a strategy game AI). make a weapon here. make a new enemy there. the decision to stick to a mostly authentic NES aesthetic made the graphics easy to approach, too.
it worked well enough. the game's engine and first stage came together pretty well over the first few months. then, an unxpected boon - covid lockdown gave me a few more months of focused dev time, and i managed to finish about half the game in this time. the demo was reasonably well-received too. unfortunately, i ended up broke, and it was time to go back to work…full-time, this time. progress basically stopped after that, as we all know that wage slavery is the bane of creative energy.
next year, though, another opportunity presented itself - i would be stuck at home for about four months taking care of my grandma, who had destroyed her ankle. that would be just enough time to finish astrolancer, i thought…! but i thought wrong, because grandma was helpless and taking care of her left me with little true free time. i got basically nothing done in the first 2 months.
WAR OF THE SPROUTS v2
realizing astrolancer wasn't going to be finished, and really wanting to get back to my passion project, i decided to take advantage of my much-improved programming skills and take another whack at wots. my reasoning was that if I could hammer out an engine quickly enough, the only thing I would have to do from that point on would be writing, art, and map design - things that wouldn't be stressful to do on weekends (my motivation to open up visual studio while recovering from the workweek was nil). it was successful to an extent - the new engine has a scripting system to automatically create UI windows and the code was much cleaner. unfortunately, time ran out when I encountered my old nemesis, the AI, and the game has remained untouched since my return to work.
UNTITLED FAIRY H-GAME
"fuck it let's just make a fucking rpgmaker game. it'll be full of horny fairies. it'll be great." you would've had to be following my pinup blog to know about this one.
after spending some time on character designs, though, i realized there was no fucking way i'd be able to draw all those cgs while also suffering the wrist strain from work.
WAR-O-MATIC
the AI girl game has a title now! believe it or not, this concept is almost as old as wots is, and is sort of its sister game. i planned to make it after releasing wots though, because it's much more experimental in terms of balance.
anyway, at this point i was thinking "what other options do I have"? what if I just took the existing wots v2 engine and made a different game that removed all the game elements that made the AI really hard to program? no transports, no fog of war, simplified powers…and an artstyle and cast that wouldn't put too much stress on my wrist. there's no reason it shouldn't work.
there was a lot of game math and balance theorycrafting to do from scratch, but that stuff is fun.
what wasn't fun was going back to AWBW after a few years to make sure I still understood the game, and discovering that I absolutely do not because I lost every single match. this has not been good for my confidence in my ability to make a good AW clone.
present day, present time
this was just recently. last week i thought of revisiting the fairy game (which is where the sprite on the pinups blog came from), and the last two weeks at work i've been running over the story in my head, coming up with spell lists, etc. i've been managing my wrist strain better and my new tablet is easier to use, "so maybe i can pull it off after all", i thought.
then, just last night, as if accosted by a foul-mouthed muse, I was struck loudly by a thought.
"JUST FINISH ASTROLANCER, YOU STUPID FUCK."
there is merit to the idea, i decided. it is the game in the furthest state of completion. the only one of two that is actually playable, and the only one of those two that doesn't suck ass.
then, this morning, that ask appeared in my inbox. it's a sign.
that's the plan. i'm going to try to finish astrolancer.
(to actually answer the question, i'm working on the stage 4 boss.)

Top 5 survival-horror videogames in 2023
Hello everyone today I will talk about one of the best survival-horror games in 2023.
5. Alan Wake
Tumblr media
it is an action and adventure game that captivates us from the first minute. Alain Wake is a writer who decides to go to the town of Bright Falls to look for his wife, it turns out that she has disappeared under strange circumstances. Once he reaches his destination, he quickly realizes that he will have to unravel a mystery. A dark presence is lurking and doesn't know who or what it is. Alan Wake's terror is more subtle and narrative, where the head plays tricks on the protagonist. The player will not be able to tell what is true and what is not, while the writer overcomes a mental block that has him in a major crisis. The game has one of the best tense and suspenseful atmospheres ever seen.
4. Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle
Tumblr media
Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle is a third-person survival horror focused on a story that takes place several years before Daymare: 1998, also a video game in the genre. In the development of Invader Studios, players get into the shoes of special agent Dalila Reyes, a former government spy now in the service of a unit called H.A.D.E.S. (Advanced Exploration and Subtraction Six-Team), as he plunges into the darkness of the desolate, labyrinthine depths of a military research complex and faces terrible and deadly dangers.
3. The Medium
Tumblr media
It is a third-person psychological horror action game developed by Bloober Team, creators of Layers of Fear. The player controls Marianne, a pregnant medium who has psychic abilities to connect with another spiritual reality, so she can explore the real world and the spiritual world at the same time. The Medium plays with the duality of two worlds: the physical and the spiritual. From there it is normal for the protagonist to relive memories to find the answer to many questions. Taking advantage of that circumstance, the game becomes quite disturbing in a very puzzling atmosphere. In addition to different puzzles, the protagonist will meet a monster born from an unspeakable tragedy.
2. Resident Evil Remake
Tumblr media
The game takes place in Raccoon City, where a deadly virus has infected the population, turning them into zombies. The player takes control of Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie police officer, or Claire Redfield, a college student, as they try to survive and escape the city. One of the most impressive aspects of Resident Evil 2 Remake is its graphics. The game features highly detailed graphics and environments, which helps to create a spooky and immersive atmosphere. The sound is also impressive, with a haunting soundtrack and sound effects that keep you on your toes throughout the game. Gameplay-wise, Resident Evil 2 Remake maintains the series' mechanics of combining elements of survival, exploring a terrifying environment, and fighting enemies while seeking to solve puzzles and progress through the story.

Taehyung freezes, one shoe halfway on, and looks at you calculatingly, as if he’s trying to determine if you’re saying what he thinks you’re saying.
You are.
Fucking kiss me. You want to scream it.
“Do something about it?” he murmurs, something low and dangerous making its way into his voice. He takes a step closer to you; you fight another shiver. This suddenly feels like a game of cat and mouse, and you hope you’ll get caught. “You have any suggestions?”
You shake your head, smiling. “Don’t do that. Don’t tease me.”
He cocks an eyebrow, then reaches forward and brushes some hair away from your face. His touch is tender, but his voice comes out like steel when he asks, “You think this is teasing? What’s wrong, you’ve been wanting this?”
“For longer than you think,” you admit, and he smiles, brushing a thumb along your cheek, his hand resting lightly along your jaw. His eyes are on your lips.
“Better not keep you waiting then,” he murmurs.

I’m going to have a little rant, so if that’s not something you want to read, keep scrolling. ☺️
I love RDR & RDR2. They are, without a doubt, the best games I’ve ever played. They are masterpieces, and I love them.
And I am *so tired* of hearing people complain about RDR not being remastered, or talking about the possibility of RDR3. Why can we not just be content with what we have? Why are we always looking for something better, even though we love what we currently have? Yes, RDR’s graphics aren’t the best, but that’s to be expected when technology is getting more and more advanced. However, it still looks pretty damn good, even by today’s standards. Plus, that story! 👏🏻👏🏻 And the replayability of RDR2 is astounding. I, personally, have 100% it ten times with no stopping in sight. Maybe I just have a better attention span than others, I don’t know.
I just feel like we as a society need to slow down, take a look at what we currently have, and be content with it. Stop constantly wanting more because that doesn’t always bring happiness. Find happiness where you are right now.

Dynamic Workforce Dynamics: How Contingent Workers Drive Innovation
In the contemporary realm of business, characterized by its swift and constant transformations, the concept of innovation has emerged as an indispensable element in shaping the triumph and enduring existence of enterprises. The presence of a dynamic workforce that embraces diverse perspectives and skills is a crucial catalyst for fostering innovation. In the realm of today's ever-evolving workforce, a group of individuals known as contingent workers has risen to prominence.
On-Demand Workforce: Tracing the Trajectory of Contingent Workers
The conventional paradigm of full-time employment is currently undergoing a profound metamorphosis. The advent of the gig economy has precipitated a surge in the pursuit of adaptable arrangements and unconventional employment prospects among workers.
The emergence of this phenomenon has engendered a reservoir of contingent workers who proffer their specialized proficiencies and acumen on a project-oriented premise. Increasingly, organizations are becoming cognizant of the immense value that lies in harnessing the potential of the contingent workforce as a means to fortify and invigorate their innovation endeavors.
Tumblr media
Inventive Approaches and a Plurality of Skillsets
The backgrounds and industries of contingent workers are frequently diverse, bringing new perspectives to the table. Their exposure to a variety of projects and companies exposes them to a vast array of experiences and challenges, allowing them to approach problems in an inventive manner. This diversity of thought is indispensable for fostering innovation within an organization.
In a world where innovation is synonymous with unconventional thinking, the diverse perspectives brought by contingent workers can spark novel ideas and unconventional solutions. Their ability to view problems from multiple perspectives can result in ground-breaking innovations that an internal team might overlook.
Tumblr media
The Possession of Specialized Expertise
Innovation often requires niche skills that a company's full-time workforce may not have. Contingent workers can fill gaps in project progress with their highly specialized skills. Their ability to jump in, contribute, and move on to other projects gives the company the latest skills without a long-term commitment.
The expertise of contingent workers, such as data scientists who can decipher complex datasets or graphic designers who can bring creative ideas to life, can boost a company's innovation game. By working with these experts project-by-project, businesses can use their skills when needed.
Tumblr media
The Ability to Swiftly Adapt to Change
Agile and responsive organizations are needed in a fast-changing world. Contingent workers adapt quickly to new environments, technologies, and industries. For fast, flexible innovation projects, their ability to integrate into teams and start immediately makes them ideal.
Innovation often requires quick turnarounds and market pivots. Contingent workers can quickly adapt to new environments, keeping innovation initiatives moving forward.
Tumblr media
Mitigated Risk and Increased Cost-Efficiency
Contingency workers improve risk management and cost-efficiency. Organizations can engage these workers for specific projects, avoiding the long-term commitments and benefits associated with full-time employees. This method reduces financial risk and optimizes innovation resource allocation.
In this age of rapid technological advancement, companies must innovate quickly. Contingency workers allow access to top talent without the financial burden of permanent employment. This flexibility lets companies allocate resources strategically and tackle more innovative projects.
Tumblr media
Agents of Cultural Transformation
Adding contingent workers to a company's workforce can propel transformation and inspire creativity. Permanent workers can learn a lot from temporary workers because of the new ways of thinking and openness to change they bring to the company. A more creative and forward-thinking culture may emerge as a result of this exposure to new ideas and perspectives.
In a conventional workplace, it can be difficult to break out of routines and establish new norms. Because of their unique perspective as temporary employees, contingent workers can be powerful agents of transformation by prompting a more creative and flexible approach to resolving problems.
Tumblr media
Cooperative Creativity and Innovation
Innovation relies heavily on collaboration, and contingent workers can be an integral part of that. Companies can benefit from forming cross-functional teams by assembling members with a wide range of expertise and perspectives. When people from different backgrounds work together, they often come up with innovative solutions.
Diversity fosters creativity because of the synergy that develops when people from different backgrounds work together. The temporary nature of their employment makes them ideal conduits for the free flow of information and ideas between different groups.
Tumblr media
The changing nature of work and the complexity of business challenges have made contingent workers crucial to innovation. These employees' diverse perspectives, specialized skills, and adaptability can boost a company's creativity and competitiveness. Using contingent workers can create an innovative workforce that prepares companies for the ever-changing business landscape. In the face of uncertainty, contingent workers are essential drivers of innovation.

How and why was The Sims developed?
Answer by Mike Sellers:
I first saw what would later become the Sims as a prototype Will Wright was working on. This was in the summer of 1995, when we were pitching Will on our new game and company. He heard us out, gave us great advice, and then showed us his cool prototype (very much like Will overall). He had a little man (graphically made out of animated, unconnected rods) walking around a gridded floor space. Will wanted to show us something he'd just completed: he dropped a toilet onto the grid, and the man went over to it, sat down on it, and then after a moment got up (complete with flushing sound if memory serves me correctly). Very funny, and it gave a glimmer of what the Sims would become. The ability to have the animations needed to use an object bound to the object rather than in the Sim was in fact an important internal feature of the game.
Fast forward to 1999. I had just joined Maxis to design SimCity Online (which never came out, but instead became The Sims 2). The Sims was in high gear. The "Dollhouse" team as it was known internally was working hard on getting the game out -- beset by the usual difficulties and some additional ones they had taken on. They had spent a long time (years) creating a graphical programming language called Edith for programming the Sims and their environment. This was rickety and in many ways all but unusable unless you knew the undocumented Secret Ways to make it work, which only a few did.
There was also a lot of question about what the game actually was. Initially they tried to market it to early audiences as a sort of Tamagotchi on steroids, as you had to care for your Sims or they'd be unhappy, not want to go to work, etc. What they quickly realized though is that people almost instantly started telling stories about the Sims, even to themselves, as if in a way to make sense of what they were doing -- or maybe just because telling stories is what we as humans do. So the team shifted their marketing approach back toward being something of a "dollhouse simulator" (without, I think, ever saying those words publicly) where people could tell their own stories. Buying stuff was just a way to keep your Sims happy, and to keep people who liked setting up and decorating a space (which turned out to be most people) happy too. Career advancement for the Sims was a thin trail of an explicit set of goals for those players who wanted them. But mostly it was about whatever story you wanted to tell with your Sims.
There continued to be a lot of problems with the game internally, though the team mostly hung together well and got things done. Many of the executives at EA (who had purchased Maxis in 1997, though the cultural transition was still continuing even in 1999) didn't really believe in the product, but thought that we could get it out, and as one said, "it'll sell maybe 250K units [not a very good showing], and be out of Will's hair." Of course it was a monstrous hit, and suddenly everything in the studio was focused on the Sims -- but that's another story.

The Goal Oriented Behavior of the Sims is really remarkable in the industry even today. I am happily stealing many of the basic ideas for our dynamic context aware monster AI in Underworld Ascendant.
So thanks to Will and the team, your insights live on...
Answer by Mike Sellers:
Jeff, glad you're able to make use of this, but I have to say, the internal behavioral model of the Sims had me tearing my hair out. Not just because the software architecture was ludicrously bad (which it was -- function parameters in Edith passed as register variables that could be over-written silently at any time by an intervening call! wheee!), but because it was just Bad AI. Yes, the Sims used a utility model to decide what to do next... sorta. They took in "advertisements" from objects and people around them, munched on them a bit to score them versus internal needs and then... chose at random from among the top three options. Not really rocket science.
And they were totally oblivious of anything happening to anyone else. My favorite is what we called the "Sim slap" situation: Adam is "in love with" Betty and is standing next to her. Carl walks up and slaps Betty. Betty cries (hard-wired reaction). Adam does absolutely nothing. He has no situational awareness and is totally unaware of the events transpiring. (Note, I believe later teams fixed this, but I don't know if it was special-cased or a general architectural solution.)
In no small part because of this experience, I spent several years working on better "social AI" (this is where my work with DARPA came in). I still love utility architectures, but they need a lot of beefing up to get past being stupidly dogged and reactionary.
Anyway, I hope your AI work goes well -- let me know if you'd ever like to discuss it! And thanks for the chance to rant about ancient history. :)

What Was the First Video Game: A Brief History of Gaming's Origins
Video games have become a ubiquitous part of modern entertainment, with millions of people around the world playing them every day. But where did it all begin? What was the first video game ever created? The answer to this question is not as straightforward as one might think.
Tumblr media
While there is no definitive answer to the question of what was the first He tuber video game, there are a number of contenders for the title. Some of the earliest examples of electronic games date back to the 1940s and 1950s, when scientists and engineers were experimenting with computers and other electronic devices. These early games were often simple and text-based, but they laid the groundwork for the more complex and sophisticated games that would follow in the decades to come.
Over the years, a number of games have been cited as the first true video game, including "Tennis for Two," which was created in 1958 by physicist William Higinbotham, and "Spacewar!," which was developed in 1962 by a group of students at MIT. While the debate over which game should be considered the first video game will likely continue for years to come, there is no denying the impact that these early games had on the development of the video game industry as we know it today.
Origins of Video Gaming
Early Concepts
The first video game was created in October 1958 by physicist William Higinbotham. The game, called "Tennis for Two," was a simple tennis game that was played on an oscilloscope. The game was designed to entertain visitors at a science fair, and it became an instant hit. The success of "Tennis for Two" paved the way for the development of video games.
In the following years, many more games were developed, such as "Spacewar!" in 1962, which was the first game to be played on multiple computers. These early games were played on large mainframe computers and were mostly developed by students and researchers.
Technological Advances
The development of microprocessors in the 1970s allowed for the creation of smaller and more affordable computers, which led to the creation of the first home video game consoles. The first commercially successful video game console was the Magnavox Odyssey, released in 1972. It was followed by the Atari 2600 in 1977, which became the most popular console of its time.
As technology continued to advance, video games became more sophisticated and complex. The introduction of 3D graphics in the 1990s revolutionized the industry, and games like Doom and Quake became instant classics. Today, video games are a multi-billion dollar industry, with millions of players around the world.
First Recognized Video Game
Tumblr media
The first recognized video game was created in the 1950s, when computer technology was in its early stages. The game was a simple tennis game that was played on an oscilloscope, a type of electronic display screen. The game was called "Tennis for Two" and was created by William Higinbotham, a physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Tennis for Two
"Tennis for Two" was created in 1958 and was played on an oscilloscope. The game was played by two players who used knobs to control the movement of their paddles. The aim of the game was to hit a dot back and forth across the screen, similar to a game of tennis. The game was a simple concept, but it was groundbreaking at the time.
The game was not commercialized or widely distributed, but it paved the way for the development of future video games. It was a significant achievement in the history of video games and was the first step towards the development of the video game industry.
Overall, "Tennis for Two" was a remarkable achievement in the history of video games. It was the first recognized video game and paved the way for the development of the video game industry.
Notable Mentions
Spacewar!
While Tennis for Two is often cited as the first video game, Spacewar! is considered by many to be the first true video game. Created in 1962 by Steve Russell and his colleagues at MIT, Spacewar! was a two-player game in which players controlled spaceships and attempted to shoot each other while avoiding the gravity well of a nearby star. The game was a hit among computer enthusiasts, and it paved the way for future video games.
Pong
Pong, created in 1972 by Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell and engineer Al Alcorn, is often credited with popularizing video games and launching the industry. Pong was a simple game that simulated table tennis, with players using paddles to hit a ball back and forth across the screen. Despite its simplicity, Pong was a massive success and spawned a slew of imitators and sequels. Today, Pong is remembered as a classic and an important milestone in video game history.
Evolution of Video Games
Arcade Era
The history of video games can be traced back to the 1940s and 1950s when computer scientists began designing simple games and simulations as part of their research. However, the first commercially successful video game was created in the early 1970s during the arcade era. The game was called Pong and was developed by Atari, a company that would become synonymous with the video game industry.
Pong was a simple game that involved two players using paddles to hit a ball back and forth across a screen. Despite its simplicity, Pong was a huge success and spawned a wave of imitators and competitors. This led to the development of more sophisticated games such as Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong.
Home Console Market
The success of arcade games led to the development of home consoles in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The first home console was the Magnavox Odyssey, released in 1972. However, it was the release of the Atari 2600 in 1977 that really kicked off the home console market.
The Atari 2600 was a huge success and helped to establish video games as a mainstream form of entertainment. Other companies soon entered the market, including Nintendo with their Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985 and Sega with their Sega Genesis in 1988.
The home console market continued to evolve throughout the 1990s and 2000s with the release of more powerful consoles such as the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox. Today, video games are a multi-billion dollar industry and are played by millions of people around the world.
