So, I've heard some voices here and there lamenting how little Gabe content - especially new Gabe content - there was and you know what? I completely agree, so I thought why not, I can try to add my little droplet into this tiny sea of Gabe appreciation we have here on tumblr.
Summary: Elena visits Gabe in his house for the first time and learns something new about his past.
Word count: 1937
AN: just some friendly fluff really, headcanon heavy, from Elena's POV but Gabe centric
"Oh, watch out, the first step is-" Gabe turned around just in time to catch Elena when she started to fall backwards. "-loose."
"Thanks for the warning." Elena shot him a glare when she regained her balance. In response Gabe only sent her an unapologetic grin and pulled her up on the next step.
"Everyone's so used to it by now that we keep forgetting to fix it with my dad," he explained as they finally reached the first floor.
The stairs led to a narrow corridor, with the same room placement as the bakery beneath it. Two doors on the right, one on the left and a wide opening to the living room at the end. In a few brisk steps Gabe opened the door on the left and invited Elena in with a courteous gesture.
"Welcome to my humble abode, your highness."
Her highness graced him with a nod and slipped by him, into the small room. Elena gave it a quick one over. It was indeed small - in fact, there probably wasn't much more space than what each guard got at the barracks - and the decor wasn't much fancier either. Cream colored walls, a thin bed by the window, a wardrobe opposite of it, one wall taken up by a bookshelf and a small cabinet by another made up basically all the furnishing of the room.
"Humble is a good word." She nodded solemnly, earning herself an eye roll from her friend. They both chuckled.
"Hey, it's your room that's out of the norm, you know?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Elena retorted, thinking about how three or even four such rooms would fit into hers. She walked over to the cabinet and picked up some trinket. "But it's nice to finally see where you grew up."
Gabe couldn't stop a fond smile sneaking onto his lips when he noticed the badge she was examining.
"Yeah and I didn't really get to change much here in the past five years. For example this thing I got back when-"
"Gabriel!" He was interrupted by his mother's voice from the bakery.
"I'll tell you in a moment," he sighed. "Make yourself at home!" He added from the doors and quickly ran downstairs to his parents.
Elena took another look around the room. It wasn't entirely empty, she had to admit that, and the poster of Antonio Agama on the inner side of the door confirmed that Gabe didn't change the decor much since he moved out.
She moved to the bookshelf and moved her hand across the titles - though there weren't that many of them to count. The lower shelves were taken up by some boxes and bags and what could've been a neatly packaged tent. Then finally a whole shelf dedicated to the whole collection of Antonio Agama's books. Elena chuckled to herself when she read some of the more dramatic titles and noticed even one that wasn't in Avaloran. On the next shelf, between other various travel books and biographies, was only one book by señor Agama, titled simply 'The Gecko's Tale'. Driven by a hunch she took it out and couldn't help but laugh when she read the blurb on the back. Although that explained how the whole kingdom found out that she's a bit adventurous too.
Finally her gaze got to the plant on top of the mantle. Hidden so deep in the room, it extended its ivy like stalks towards the sun, climbing a string helpfully hung between the bookshelf and the window.
Down on the windowsill two other plants looked out on the little cobbled square behind the house. Elena leaned in to smell the orchid and noticed something half hidden behind the pot. Slowly, so as not to accidentally damage the plant, she reached for trinket and retrieved it into the light. It turned out to be a wooden doll, painted to resemble a familiar navy and maroon uniform...
"Is this you?" She turned to Gabe as soon as he entered the room and showed him the figurine with a wide smile.
Gabe stopped for a moment. Furrowed his brows as he tried to see what Elena was even holding, and then furrowed his brows even more when he recognised it.
"Of course not," he grumbled, closing the small distance between them. "It's just an old thing anyway."
"It does look a bit like you though." She jumped away from him at the last moment.
Gabe gasped. Elen giggled and moved her hand away when he tried to reach her.
"Why would I even have a figurine of myself?"
For a moment they circled each other, like two lions judging if it's worthy to fight the opponent for a steak, except the steak was now wooden and 15 centimetres high. They both hunched subconsciously and made their steps in the fencing manner.
"I don't know, why does Esteban have a whole wall of his own portraits?" A sly grin slid on her face. "But I see you've decided to match his collection."
"Oh now you've done it." Gabe shook his head to hide his smile and in the split of a second was right by her. Feigning to go right for the prize, he swiped her legs out from under her.
Elena waved her hands in the air giving Gabe just the opportunity he was waiting for. He swiftly yanked the figurine from her hands, giving her the last push to fall backwards completely. He turned his head with a victorious grin, just in time to see her legs rising at the height of his knees. And suddenly the ground was much closer than before.
He folded his arms to his chest, protecting the figurine with his body and rolled on the floor. Though he didn't have to roll far, of which he was promptly reminded by his head crushing into the cupboard.
He groaned loudly and let his body fall limply to the floor.
His pained complaint was answered by Elena's laughter from the bed.
"I'm getting too old for this," he mumbled and Elena's laughter only got louder.
Finally he sat up and lifted the figurine to his face. He carefully examined it for any cracks or splinters, checked if the joints in the limbs didn't fall out and most importantly if the head was still on firm. Finally when he made sure the trinket didn't get damaged, he let out a relieved sigh.
"You're lucky it's still whole," he grumbled, rising to his feet.
"Hey, I was being careful." Elena now sat up too and sent him a playful smirk. "All the way until you decided to trip me like that."
Gabe rolled his eyes again and huffed in pretended annoyance.
"So if it's not a limited edition General Nuñez action figure," Elena continued. "What is it?"
Gabe sat down next to her and thought of an answer for a moment. He changed the position of the little soldier's arms and reached for a pin to put into his hand as a sword.
"It's really just an old toy," he said finally. "But you know, it has sentimental value."
He finally passed Elena the figurine, so she could take a look at it herself. It wasn't as old as she thought at first. The paint was faded, but still held onto the uneven surface of the wood and as she moved her fingers across it, she realized that it must've been all whittled by hand, by someone who put great care in it, but wasn't a professional.
Still the amount of details was impressive, especially in the construction of the thing. She moved the tiny soldier into the proper fencing position and to her delight found out that it fits flawlessly, the wire on the joints creaked quietly, as if it had been waiting for an opportunity to shine for ages.
She glanced between the figurine and Gabe on her left for comparison. The uniform, despite the familiar colours, was a tad different, it resembles more what she remembered from her childhood, than the uniform Gabe was wearing at the moment.
"I got it from my first fencing teacher," he continued.
"The same one who threw coconuts at you driving training?" Elena raised a brow, earning herself a chuckle.
"Yeah, the same one." A sad smile reached the corners of his eyes as old memories resurfaced in his memory. "He was a tough man and always talked about how big an annoyance I am, but -" he gestured to the figurine and shrugged.
"Well, that explains why it looks like you," Elena bumped him with her shoulder. "I'm sure he could've already seen that you'll be a great guard."
"Oh, I don't think he even wanted me to be a guard," Gabe laughed again. "But you know, the situation was a bit different." He pondered something for a moment before continuing. "And to be fair, I didn't even realize that it was supposed to be a guard at the time, I was pretty sure he just came up with the design by himself. I only really connected the dots a few years ago, when I found this old thing again."
Elena nodded silently and put a comforting hand on his arm. She could see that this topic wasn't easy for him.
"Though maybe what you said was the point." He straightened suddenly and his gaze went back to the figurine. "Maybe he wasn't completely against me joining the guard, just... joining the right one."
His smile became wider and it was like his whole face lit up. Elena raised the little soldier's arms to make it cheer. They both laughed at how expressive this piece of wood was.
"So where is your coach now?" Elena asked, caressing the wooden toy one more time.
He only sighed at first and for a moment his gaze became clouded again, before he shook his head to cast the memories away.
"I wish I knew," he sent her a sad smile. "One day he just... disappeared. A few trinkets and one letter is all the proof I have that he wasn't just my hallucination."
Elena's lips twitched in a matching sad smile, but before she could say anything, they both heard a voice from downstairs, calling the unmistakable word 'dinner!'
Gabe clapped his hands on his knees and sprung up to his feet.
"Ah, just in time", he extended his hand to Elena. "I think eating is a much more fun topic than discussing the weird things I did in my childhood."
Elena examined his face for a moment more, but gave up on asking all the questions that pushed to the tip of her tongue. She sent him a smile instead and accepted his hand.
"Oh, you mean you did more weird things?" She made the little figurine gasp.
"I feel like I shouldn't have started this topic," Gabe laughed.
"Oh no, you won't escape now." She poked him in the chest and put the little soldier in his hand. "I gotta know all the crazy stories."
"Okay, okay, I'll tell you something," Gabe raised his hands in defeat. "But you can't mention it to my parents, please, they'll never stop until they tell you my whole life story."
Elena made a theatrical gesture of tapping her lips in thought as she backed out of the room.
"I'll consider it," she sent him a wide grin and in a second turned and ran towards the stairs.
"Hey- wait!" Gabe called out, running right after her to save what was left of his reputation.

One of the reasons why Elena is a good example of how to do the “strong female character” trope correctly, is that she’s also allowed to be a “damsel in distress”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which makes her an actually fleshed out well-rounded believable human being who doesn’t magically have the skills or powers to do everything just because the narrative says so.
Something a lot of “strong female characters” are sadly lacking, because godforbid women show weaknesses.

Looking back on better days When we were young, we thought we knew so much And now it seems so far away Of wondering if I was good enough So many things I shouldah Said when I had the chance So many times we took it all for granted
I'd never thought we would ever end I'd never thought Id lose my best friend Everything is different now Can we stop the world from turning Id never thought Id have to let you go Id never thought Id ever feel this low I wish I could go back And we stop the world from turning
Gone are all the days When we swore wed never break

Four amigo school hc?
ehehehehh yes! this is one of those things I've thought about a lot because some of it is actually relevant for Close Enough, so this is something i've wanted to infodump on for a while now:
Elena:
she grew up with private tutors and was taught in the palace alongside Esteban
as a royal (and especially as the heir), there was a heavy focus in her education on things like diplomacy, etiquette, politics, and history
she generally worked better with practical examples than with theory - in particular, she struggled with math for a long time as a kid because of this
(which then created a bit of a vicious cycle - she struggled with math, so she didn't like studying it, so it never really "clicked" for her, so she continued to struggle, etc. etc. this then turned her off to more science-y subjects, since she assumed it would be the same thing)
Esteban routinely out-performed her academically and would hold that over her head, which was a recurring point of contention between them when they were kids
especially since Esteban had more freedom with what he could study - he wasn't expected to rule someday, so he didn't have as rigid of an education track
Elena went through a rebellious phase where she would push back against her teachers because of the above - she didn't really appreciate what the point of a lot of her lessons was until her parents died and she suddenly found herself having to apply them in real-time
she's pretty out-of-touch with what public school is actually like. She really tries to help Isa with her school problems but doesn't have the practical experience to help in very meaningful ways
when Isa first decided to go to public school, Elena tried going to her friends for advice. she got some incredibly mixed reviews.
Gabe:
he had what would classify as the most "typical" school experience of the amigos
like, he went to public school for all his childhood and adolescence, and his school experience was consistently pretty average. He was a bit of a jack-of-all-trades when it came to subject matter.
he was a solid B+ student - he was very hardworking, and good at applying what he learned
but he tended to struggle with memorizing exact definitions, which caused him trouble on tests (and frustrated him to no end - like, he knows what the terms mean, and he knows how to explain it in a way people understand, he just doesn't remember exactly how his textbook phrased it)
in primary school, he was a bit of a self-proclaimed safety patrol. he would often stick up for younger kids he saw getting picked on during recreo, try to help other kids find things they'd lost, walk kids home that were scared to go alone (i.e. bc they had bullies or were just still really young), etc.
the little kids adored him for this - he was basically everyone's big brother. his peers would sometimes poke fun at him for it. his friends weren't malicious about it, but obviously the kids he would prevent from picking on others didn't really like being told to stop
there were more than a few times as a kid when he'd get home late bc he'd been helping someone or would show up at home with a bruise or scrape from inserting himself into someone else's fight, which always worried Blanca to death
he ended up not going into upper secondary - he didn't really plan on going to university, and Roberto wanted him to help around the bakery more.
This period was what locked in his mind that he definitely didn't want to spend the rest of his life working for his dad - those three years had turned what as a kid was a fun learning experience with his dad into a pressure-filled job since Roberto was now expecting him to suddenly be perfect at it
Naomi:
her education is all over the place from all the traveling she did throughout her childhood
like she went through bursts of being homeschooled on her parents' ship to getting a couple months of public education in whatever town they'd settled in and then back to the ship, etc. etc.
as a result, she was always way ahead of her peers in some areas and way behind them in others, since no two kingdoms taught things in the exact same order or at the same rate
she's actually really good at math - it's the same in every language/region, and she got a lot of practical use with it by calculating speed, distance, and location while sailing
she's also pretty good at picking up the basics of different languages but never stayed in one place long enough to really become fluent in the local tongue
she struggled with making friends through school when she was growing up since she was always the "outsider"
she originally planned on doing upper secondary in Avalor since she didn't have an apprenticeship lined up and didn't really know what direction she wanted to go with her life, but she dropped out once she got her job at the palace
upon Mendoza's suggestion (and with her recommendation, since Naomi never finished upper secondary), she eventually starts taking university classes in history and archaeology to continue her studies of Maru
Mateo:
he was actually homeschooled for the first few years of primary school. Rafa didn't want him walking into the city all by himself, and she was worried that he was too young to understand that no, seriously, you absolutely cannot talk about your abuelo in public, Mateo
so he had very limited social experience with his peers by the time he started going to school, and between that and being the new guy (and also just being Mateo), he got pegged as the "weird kid" within like 30 minutes of his first day and never really shook that reputation. He was an easy target for bullying.
he had a difficult time focusing on his schoolwork. He'd be so invested in studying magic at home that he'd routinely forget to do his homework, and he'd stay up so late that he'd doze off or just otherwise be distracted in class
his strife with his peers and his apparent lack of attentiveness got him written off as a "problem student" by his teachers
not helping matters was that he would sometimes question them on Shuriki's propaganda in the history books - he genuinely wasn't trying to be confrontational, but young!Mateo didn't get why what he was being taught at school was so different from what his mom taught him at home
he liked subjects like chemistry and linguistics - things that were "magic adjacent", basically, so he could pretend he was studying that instead
in an inverse situation to Gabe, Mateo was really good at rote memorization, so even though he wouldn't keep up with his assignments, he still tested pretty well. This also drove teachers bonkers. He was that kid getting sent home with "shows potential but needs to apply himself better" and the like written on his report cards
the second "wizard" became a viable career choice he dropped out of upper secondary. like he didn't even wait to be appointed royal wizard - Elena came back and he was like "fuck this shit I'm out"
Bonus Combo Headcanons!
when Elena came to the other amigos to initially ask about school advice for Isa, Gabe's response was a pretty neutral "well she's pretty smart so it might just be kinda boring for her", Naomi's was basically just a massive shrug, and Mateo's was an incredulous "wait, she's going to public school on purpose?"
Naomi and Mateo technically never started upper secondary - Elena came back their summer between 9th and 10th grade - but they were both already enrolled for the next year
Naomi and Mateo were in the same class in school, but they didn't really know each other. They would hang out sometimes since they were both social outcasts for one reason or another, but they didn't really consider each other friends until they met Elena.
(or at least, Naomi didn't consider them friends. Mateo did kinda think that they were)
Mateo and Gabe actually encountered each other once as kids - Gabe got one of Mateo's books back for him from a particularly cruel game of keep-away.
Gabe has literally no memory of the incident - it was just another Tuesday for him. Mateo remembers it but has idealized it so much in his head that he hasn't even considered that the Guy Who Helped Him Once could be his current friend Gabe, who laughed at him for falling off a horse last week.

Hello!! If you're still taking requests and don't mind drawing it, may I ask for Gabe wearing the Royal Guard uniform under Shuriki's reign? 👀

Of course! Have to say, I think this is an interesting look for him.

I JUST GOT MY AO3 INVITE SO IMMA START WRITING MY CRACK FIC HERE ARE SOME INCORRECT QUOTES WITH CHARACTERS ONLY OC IS THE VILLAIN
Some things about the fic it’s a cross over with Encanto, Moana, Elena of Avalor, and Tangled the series. Camilo is gender fluid and the main ship is Isabela x Moana and if you find that grammar and/or spelling is wrong feel free to point it out so I can fix that
Gabe: Are they stupid?
Luisa: Yes, but they prefer to be called Camilo.
Moana : I am an expert at identifying birds.
Elena : Okay, what about those ones flying over there?
Moana : Yeah, they're all birds.
Isabela : I love you.
Moana, not paying attention: What was that?
Isabela : I said I’m selling you to the zOo-
Moana: My future partner must be brave, strong, intelligent, successful and organized.
Isabela : *steps on a caterpillar and proceeds to drop to their knees and sob while apologizing profusely*
Moana: That one. I want that one.
Moana: Come to dinner tonight. I can’t cook, but I’ll bring plenty of free wine.
Isabela : Marry me.
Isabela : Are you sure Moana's even gay? They barely even looked at me.
Isabela : I want to kiss you.
Moana, not paying attention: What?
Isabela : I said if you die, I wont miss you.
Isabela : Can you cut me some slack, Moana? I’m sort of in love.
Moana: I’m sorry, but that’s really not my problem.
Isabela : I’m in love with you.
Moana: *blushes* Oh. That brings me in the loop a little.
Camilo : I don't need to go to bed. I'm not tired, I'll be fine.
Varian: But, darling, I'll be so lonely without you. Come curl up in my arms so I can feel whole again.
Camilo : O-oh. Well. Are you trying to seduce me into healthy sleeping patterns??
Varian: Is it working?
Camilo : Why are your tongues purple?
Isabela : We had slushies. I had a blue one.
Moana: I had a red one.
Camilo : oh.
Camilo :
Camilo : OH.
Varian:
Varian: You drank each others slushies?
*playing twister*
Camilo : Right hand red.
Isabela : *ends up on top of Moana*
Moana: You're doing this on purpose, aren't you?
Camilo : I stopped spinning like 15 minutes ago. Honestly, I'm surprised you didn't notice.
Camilo : You know, Isabela gives moana flowers everyday, I wish you'd do that too.
Varian: Okay.
*Later*
Varian: *gives Moana flowers*
Moana: ???
Varian: I don't know, I'm confused as well.
Varian: If I'm extra sarcastic with you it probably means I'm flirting with you or you really annoy me and I can't handle your crap... have fun figuring out which one.
Isabela : *finds a note* Hmm, whats this?
Varian: Hey, that's mine! *tries to grab it*
Isabela : Aww, it's a love note for Camilo ?
Varian: No-
Isabela : *opens it*
Isabela :
Varian:
Isabela : I can't read this.
Camilo : Due to personal reasons, I will be f*cking sinking to the bottom of the ocean in a large metal box.
Moana: Did Varian say 'I love you' and you said 'Thanks'?
Camilo : THE REASONS ARE PERSONAL–
Camilo : *seductively takes off glasses*
Camilo : Wow...
Varian: *blushes* Haha... what?
Camilo : You're really f*cking blurry.
Moana: It's pretty cold outside.. wanna hold hands? We should stay close.
Isabela , blushing: Okay.
Varian: It's f*cking summer.
Isabela : If I say I love you, will you say it back?
Moana: Yes.
Isabela : I love you.
Moana: It back.
*Later*
Mirabel: Why is Isabela crying face-down on the floor?
Camilo : I’m this close to falling in love with Varian.
Moana: Your fingertips are touching.
Camilo : Exactly.
Varian: Why don’t you go talk to them?
Moana, sarcastically: Oh. Yeah, sure.
Varian: What? So you go tell them they’re cute, what’s the worst that could happen?
Moana: They could hear me.
Moana: Is something burning?
Isabela , leaning seductively on the counter: Just my desire for you.
Moana: Isabela , the toaster is literally on fire.
Camilo : Where are you going?
Varian: To get MYSELF a gift cause somebody didn't get me one!
Camilo : I told you I did! Its coming here on Friday!
Isabela , knowing full well that Camilo got Varian an engagement ring: *eating popcorn*
Varian: It's pretty cold outside.. wanna hold hands? We should stay close.
Camilo , blushing: Okay.
Moana: It's fucking summer.
Isabela : Do you love Varian?
Camilo : Yeah, I do.
Isabela : Moana! I told you I knew it! You owe me 100 bucks!
Moana: We all love Varian. You should've asked if they were IN love with them.
Camilo : I thought that was implied.
Moana: ...
Isabela : ...
Camilo , looking straight at Moana: Congrats Isabela , you just won 100 bucks.
Camilo : ....Thou shalt not marry each other, for thy art both sinful...
Moana: I just wanna fucking marry Isabela !!
Camilo : I dare you to kiss the next person who walks into this room.
Isabela : Screw that, I’m not kissing any of you.
*Moana walks in*
Isabela : Fine, I’ll do it. Rules are rules you know.
Varian: Truth or dare?
Moana: Dare.
Varian: I dare you to kiss the hottest person in the room.
Moana: Hey Camilo ?
Camilo: Yeah?
Moana: Can you move? I'm trying to get to Isabela .
Varian: Isabela you can’t move in with Moana.
Isabela : Why not?
Varian: Well, um, how are you going to feel when they see you without any makeup?
Isabela : I’m not wearing makeup right now.
Varian: Holy crap, you’re beautiful.
Varian: Hey Isabela , wanna third wheel on my date with Camilo tomorrow?
Isabela : Sure.
Varian: Moana! Wanna third wheel on my date with Camilo tomorrow?
Varian: Great! I've always wanted to go on a double date!
Isabela & Moana: ...
Camilo : Varian…
Camilo : Guys, I’ve been meaning to tell you… Varian and I are dating.
Varian, Isabela , Moana, and Mirabel: *gasp*
Camilo : Varian, why are you surprised?!
Moana: H-how do you ask someone out?
Camilo: Well, first-
Varian: Don't ask them, they asked me out in a McDonalds parking lot.
Moana: ...And you said yes?
Varian: Hi.
Isabela : Hey, did you do what I said? Did you tell them?
Varian: I did.
Isabela : And what did they say?
Varian: “Thank you.”
Isabela : You’re totally welcome. What’d they say?
Varian: They said, “Thank you.” I said “I love you” and Camilo said, “Thank you.”
Moana: I know you love them.
Camilo : I am not in love with Varian!
Moana, staring at Camilo : I never said who...
Camilo : *realizes*
Camilo : Shit. Well, anyways-
Camilo , at an awards show: Well, first of all, I’d like to thank Varian, the love of my life, for telling me Moana was going to win so don’t bother to prepare a speech.
Isabela : Hey, Camilo , are you free on Friday? Like around eight?
Camilo : Yeah.
Isabela : And you, Varian?
Varian: Umm... yes?
Isabela : Great! Because I'm not. You two go out without me. Enjoy your date!
Varian: Did they just-
Elena: Let’s watch Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
Niomi: Okay.
Elena: And make out during the scary parts.
Niomi: Th-
Niomi: The scary parts.
Niomi: Of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
Gabe: Let’s watch Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
Mateo: Okay.
Gabe: And make out during the scary parts.
Mateo: Th-
Mateo: The scary parts.
Mateo: Of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
Gabe: The stars are so beautiful...
Mateo: They're just giant balls of gas.
Gabe: You know what, if you're just going to ruin this, then-
Mateo: And yet none of them are as huge as my love for you.
Gabe: Oh...
Mateo: We both look very handsome tonight.
Gabe: You know, if you'd just said that I looked handsome, I would have said, "So do you."
Mateo: I couldn't take that chance.
Gabe: There's no way they like me back.
Elena: Mateo would throw themself in front of a moving car for you.
Gabe: Mateo would throw themself in front of a moving car for fun.
Mateo: You know, Elena gives Niomi flowers everyday, I wish you'd do that too.
Gabe: Okay.
*Later*
Gabe: *gives Niomi flowers*
Niomi: ???
Gabe: I don't know, I'm confused as well.
Mateo: When I was a kid, Niomi told me that the paper strip that’s in the chocolate kisses were edible and I ate them with the chocolate for a year.
Elena: They are!
Mateo: FOR REAL?
Elena: No! Why did you fall for it again?
Gabe: That sounds like a terrible plan.
Elena: Oh, we've had worse.
Elena: This totally sucks, man.
Gabe: This is horrible.
Elena: Yeah, I know, I mean look at today’s news.
Gabe: No, it’s not that, it’s Mateo.
Gabe: It’s just like, I can’t get them out of my head and every time I look at them I have this pains in my chest, and I just know it’s their fault, that bitch!
Elena: Do you mind if I slyly mention that you’re single?
Gabe: Do not do that.
Elena: You won’t even notice!
Mateo, entering: Elena, you wanted to see me again?
Elena: Gabe's single
Gabe:
Niomi: Due to personal reasons, I will be fucking sinking to the bottom of the ocean in a large metal box.
Mateo: Did Elena say 'I love you' and you said 'Thanks'?
Niomi: THE REASONS ARE PERSONAL–
Mateo: *yawns*
Gabe: Yeah, being that pretty must be tiring.
Mateo: Then you must be exhuasted.
Elena: Will you two shut up? Some of us are lonely.
Niomi: Well, remember when Elena made a romantic dinner for me?
Mateo: Niomi, they microwaved you a pizza.
Niomi: How do you know how to kiss? like who teaches you?
Elena: Well it’s actually a class, but unfortunately it’s full right now.
Elena: Would you like me to tutor you?
Gabe: That was smooth.
Gabe: Can I have 2 straws with that milkshake?
Mateo: Aww-
Gabe: With 2 straws, I can drink it double as fast!
Gabe, to Mateo: We had a date!
Gabe: *aggressively points to Hello Kitty Coloring Book*
Gabe: I truly go into housespouse mode when I'm someone's soulmate- like, I'll make you pancakes and bacon every morning.
Mateo: This is a lie.
Mateo: I'm literally dating them. This is a lie.
Mateo: THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO COOK A PANCAKE, WHAT IS THIS.
Mateo: Ugh, crushes are so dumb.
Gabe: I know. Whenever I’m near the person I like I just start acting stupid.
Mateo: But you’re always acting stupid?
Gabe: ...
Gabe: Yeah, don’t think about that too hard.
Mateo: Is something burning?
Gabe, leaning seductively on the counter: Just my desire for you.
Mateo: Gabe, the toaster is literally on fire.
Gabe, sweating: Mateo, there’s something I need to ask you-
Mateo: Finally! You’re proposing!
Gabe: How’d you know?
Mateo: Gabe, you’ve dropped the ring five times during dinner.
Mateo: I even picked it up once.
Mateo: Name a more iconic duo than my crippling fear of abandonment and my anxiety. I’ll wait.
Gabe: You and me!
Mateo: *tearing up* Ok.
Camilo: You can't wake up if you never got to sleep.
Camilo: Am I a boy? Am I a girl? It doesn't matter. I'm going to burn your house down.

#18, 26, and 2 for one Captain of the guard for your character ask game please?
For a moment I didn't notice the "one" in your sentence and thought you were asking about Captain from Tangled XD
But of course, if there is even a chance to interpret this question as being about the one and only Gabriel Nuñez, I am going to take it 😌
2. When I think I truly started to like them (or dislike them, if you've sent me a character I don't like)
Xbbdhzhd okay so I've probably talked about it a million times already, but I really disliked Gabe at first XD And it was even worse because of the fact that I love the name Gabriel/a (there's a very dear to me person of that name) and I was so angry because they gave this name to a stupid musclehead >:(
Obviously by the time I joined the fandom I didn't dislike him anymore, I was kinda indifferent to him, and I think I only really started to like him once the show ended or very close to the finale, mostly, of course, thanks to one and only Amuel and her bonafide propa-gabe-da. But at the time of the finale and around it I was still mostly focused on Francisco, with Gabe being only like 3rd or 4th in the ranking of my favorites, and then my attention just kinda switched to Gabe gradually. And now I love him <3
18. How do you think they were as a kid? (Like, were they shy, noisy, wild, etc)
Ekhm, I mean...
I definitely think he was generally quite an adventurous child, we know that he liked travel/adventure books, so I can see him wanting to go on his own adventures too, often coming home late and with scraped hands and knees. I think he also always had a strong sense of justice and as I'm always saying, he has immaculate older brother vibes, so I think it all came down to him declaring himself a local protector of younger and smaller kids. We also saw that he doesn't have a problem with rougher games and types of affection, so even if he was never into sports, I can see him being in some sort of club/group where they'd do forest-adventure-survival kind of stuff cough scouting cough. And when compared to current Gabe, I think he was much more carefree and didn't worry that much about proving himself to everyone around (as a child, now teenage Gabe is a completely different topic...)
26. When do you think they were being "themselves" the most?
That's such a good question! And the answer depends on who we think Gabe really is...
If I was to say a period then well, post finale of course, he has already changed a lot, came into his own, in a way, and generally grew, he also got more confident and comfortable with his position, so I'd say that's what "himself" might mean for him, though obviously his personal growth is far from over.
In terms of specific episodes, definitely "Princess Knight", "Blockheads", "Snow Place Like Home" and, all in all, "Captain Mateo"
Generally with the one exception, I think the best Gabe episodes are actually the ones that don't focus on him (here I could go on a tangent about Gabe and his place and connection to community, and about how you can divide the amigos based on their approach being more individualistic vs social, but then we'd be there the whole day)
Thank you so much for the ask! Gabe <3

This is probably useless to anyone but I felt like in the mood to write down character flaws. Im still amazed how they tried to make everyone three dimensional.
Elena: Impulsivity, grudge holding, stubbornness, competitiveness
Esteban: Cowardness, bitterness, arrogance, self pity, selfishness
Isabel: Stubbornness, narrow mindedness (more like in how he’s hard for her to do things in a different way like in A Gecko’s Tale.)
Naomi: Prejudice, impulsivity
Gabe: Cockiness, narrow mindedness, overprotectiveness, competitiveness
Mateo: Cockiness, narrow mindedness
Luisa: Competitiveness, grudge holding
Francisco: Self pity (this was really hard, Francisco is a sweetheart but I guess he had a little self pity in The Return of Los Tres when Elena was treating him as just as an Abuelo)
Victor: Greed, bitterness, grudge holding
Carla: Envy, greed
Ash: Selfishness, greed, power hungry
Alonso: Arrogance, laziness
Valentina: Arrogance, competitiveness
Rebecca: Narrow mindedness, stubbornness
Chloe: Selfishness, obliviousness
Marisa: Impulsivity
Armando: Self pity
Cristobal: Greed, selfishness
Doña Paloma: Greed, envy, bitterness, arrogance

I know you said that Isabel was an August birthday, but do we get any other hints to the birthdays of the other characters? Naomi is the only character who gets a birthday episode (Elena too, if you count “Coronation Day”).
we do get a few other clues! they're of varying degrees of comprehensiveness:
Elena we know has a summer birthday. the show starts early in Sofia's summer vacation, and the whole "four years until Elena is of-age to be queen" thing is counted from there. If we assume that everyone ages up for the special episodes, that would put Elena's birthday sometime in August after Isa's, since Isa would need to turn 14 before Elena turned 20. If we assume the whole "special episodes mean a year has passed and everyone ages up" thing is just a generalization and not an exact timeline measure (which is probably the case, considering the Carnaval situation), then Elena's birthday could potentially be earlier in the summer, too. Word of God says that Elena is a Leo, which would put her birthday roughly between July 23rd and August 22nd.
Esteban gets a birthday episode in Island of Youth early in the show. This episode takes place sometime between the start of the show and Da de los Muertos, which puts it sometime in the pretty wide range of late June/early July (depending on how long it took the Enchancians to get to Avalor, how long it took for them to pack up and leave after the Shuriki thing, etc.) and November 2nd. Also according to Word of God, Esteban was already the older cousin pre-timeskip by a little bit, which suggests that his birthday is before Elena's in the calendar year. It could still be afterward, but then he would be older than her by almost a year, which I personally feel is a bit longer than "a little bit."
Naomi's birthday episode takes place sometime between King of the Carnaval (late February/early March) and Realm of the Jaquins (1 year since First Day of Rule, so presumably late June/early July). It's the immediate next episode after KotC, which suggests to me that it's earlier in that time range, but in any case, Naomi having a spring birthday seems pretty clear cut.
We can maaaaybe make a guess at Mateo's birthday based off the whole "we go to school together" thing but it requires a lot of assumptions, so bear with me for a second here. If we assume that:
"we go to school together" means that Mateo and Naomi are in the same class, and not just they see each other in passing sometimes
students in Avaloran schools are grouped by year and a given class will only contain students from the same year
Naomi and Mateo are both in the correct year for their age (that is, Naomi didn't skip any grades and Mateo never got held back)
it's possible to defer a child's starting school year if they're born late enough in the school year
and Mateo actually is 16 at the start of the show and doesn't just turn 16 at some point early enough in the show to count as that age prior to RotJ
...then that puts Mateo's birthday somewhere in the range between "late in the school year" and whenever the show starts, which would mean he has a late spring/early summer birthday, and is also probably one of the oldest kids in his grade. Like, for all of the above to be true, Mateo would've had to be born pretty late in the school year, bc otherwise why wouldn't he just be in the grade above Naomi?
But if any of those assumptions are false then Mateo's birthday just becomes a toss-up lol, so it's not exactly a likely range. Like it could really just be anywhere in the year. Kind of like Gabe, who is the only member of the core 6 whose birthday we don't get any kind of clues about whatsoever. I usually hc his birthday as being in late fall/early winter just because someone in this cast has to have a birthday that isn't in the spring or summer.
So, in summary:
Elena - summer birthday. anywhere in the Leo range, but probably in August, after Isa's
Isa - August birthday
Esteban - most likely a mid-summer birthday, before Elena's
Naomi - spring birthday, possibly pretty early in the season
Mateo - maaaybe a late spring/early summer birthday. Maybe.
Gabe - who knows honestly, I hc late in the year to balance all the summer birthdays out
Fun fact! These birthday ranges would also suggest that Elena and Isa actually skipped their birthdays their first summer out of stasis. KotC says Lucía wore a particular bracelet on Isa's tenth birthday, but for Isa to be 11 years, 3 months, etc. in Three Jaquins and a Princess, then that means her 10th birthday should have actually passed the previous August. This was after the start of the show, so Lucía couldn't have been there. Otherwise, the 10th birthday thing is just an error, and Isa actually started the show at 9, turning 10 shortly after.

It took longer then expected but I finally finished writing this fanfiction! It's about Victor and Carla’s time spent in the palace dungeon and the experiences they had there. (Which includes making new animal friends, getting interrogated, and reflections on emotions!)
