97: Rob // Rob

Rob Rob 1977, Essiebons (Bandcamp) My favourite Ivorian Robot Operating Buddy from Ghana, Rob’s first LP is what Jay-Z once called “Black superhero music.” Few of the songs develop a ton—what you’re hearing in the first 30 seconds is more or less what you’ll be hearing seven minutes later, but it must be said that there is not a moment of this record that does not feel like an appropriate soundtrack to history’s slickest motherfucker doing his thing. Rob is probably one of the better-known afro-funk reissues of recent years, an assessment I’ve made purely on the basis of knowing one guy who will understand what I’m referring to when I yell “FUNKY ROB WAY” at him. (Though another sign might be that two different reissue labels, Mr. Bongo and Analog Africa, appear to have re-released the album within a month of one another in 2019. The Analog Africa version seems to be a much more elaborate production, but my Mr. Bongo version sounds great and you don’t necessarily need to know Rob’s star sign or shoe size to enjoy the LP.)

As a frontman, Rob is mostly just kinda there, muttering or yelling something every few bars while his band produces Pacific Northwest quantities of smoke. (Or as of 2023, Montreal quantities of smoke.) They really have an incredible sound, the funk equivalent to one of those collector-bait underground psych rock bands that turned some uncle money into a spectacular amateur studio and recorded one melted opus before selling their instruments and beginning a Christian ministry in Vanuatu. Though plenty of Ghanaian bands of the era could make people move, Rob’s band are just as impressive on the spacier numbers, like the warbling synth-spined “Forgive Us All” and “Your Kiss Stole Me Away,” which are basically FM radio for Black UFOs. The ensemble began life as a military band called Mag-2 under the stewardship of fanfic-ass-named guitarist Amponsha Rockson (would be like my parents naming me Hieronymus Suckdickson—how could they have known?). I gather that at the time joining the military wasn’t a bad deal for a musician, as the army would provide kickass western gear in exchange for entertaining their fellow troops. The Analog Africa liner notes (kindly provided on their Bandcamp) say the Mag-2 guys were still living in their barracks during the recording of this album, which suggests the Ghanaian Army must’ve been a pretty chill org. Can you imagine the US Army Herald Trumpets playing something as cool as the horn hits on “More”? Oh yeah definitely, he’s not very good at reading rooms and often times find himself saying/doing things he definitely shouldn’t be doing for that moment. Mostly it’s a comic-relief sorta thing but also just him genuinely not knowing and often will feel bad for it later even though he can’t help it-

so I realized that around this time of the year is already past my 1 year anniversary of being hyperfixated on Rob?? time flies

this is the timeline of how it happened according to some vague memories:

1. i happen to see some random video of The Rerun on like, YouTube I think

2. me: hmm i think that one eyed guy is giving some real gender envy– wait. oh no. its happening. he's the new Chosen One, isn't he

3. im not hyperfixated im not hyperfixated im not–

4. I AM SO FUCKING HYPERFIXATED I LOVE ROB FROM TAWOG HE MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME!!!!!!

5. rob is a major part of my life and my headspace now. i couldn't stop if I tried, because some part of my brain views him as an actual close friend, and therefore abandoning this hyperfixation would feel extremely cruel. i would never do that to him and therefore he will be my imaginary bestie/adoptive son forever. i will never grow out of it. i am perfectly okay with that

-matsuda has a very stressful life. he’s a police officer working to catch kira, and he is unappreciated by others most of the time. so coming home to you is the thing he looks forward to the most. you appreciate him no matter what, whether he comes home and helps you with things or if he’s too exhausted to do anything.

-he has to wake up pretty early for work, and he always tries his best to let you sleep. if you do wake up, he can’t help but get back into bed and hold you until you get to sleep again. however, you do like to wake up with him even though he assures you that you can sleep. he forgets random stuff in the morning like stuff he needs to take to work and you want to be there to make sure everything’s sorted. (also you want to help him choose a crazy patterned tie for the day. he has an insane collection)

-bedroom is full of stuffed animals im not joking he LOVES them and depending on your personality, you may have contributed. if you didn’t have any integrity at all you’d be bankrupt from the amount of teddies bought

-i feel like he’s generally a bad cook but has a few meals he does PERFECTLY. you campaign for him to just cook these few meals all the time

-in the morning, he makes breakfast for two even if u don’t wake up and leaves it for you to eat when you do wake up.

-on that same thought, he does a lot of little sweet things. he wants to be around you as much as possible but can’t because of his occupation so he does lots of little things. cooks you breakfast, leaves u little notes, comes home with flowers or romantic gifts like that very often

-as i said earlier, sometimes when he comes home he’s just too exhausted to do anything. he worries that he isn’t doing enough, and that he’s letting you down very often. you’re always understanding of his feelings and reassure him. you’re always there to comfort him after a long day. the smile on his face when he sees you after he gets home is so so so adorable

-he loves rom coms and you always watch them together in the evenings. you both fall asleep with movies playing frequently.

-he always holds v tightly onto u when ur asleep together. he just wants to hug u ALL THE TIME

ok so like, pros are obviously things like:

Helps further medical science in a time of scientific discovery which is being halted by overbearing religious institutions blah blah blah

HOWEVER, what this always fails to take into account is:

dirty

disrespect for the dead via religious wants and needs (remember kids! consent is important if you want to study a cadaver for science!)

the fact that lots of the graves dug up were in potters' fields where the poor were usually buried because 1) this was easier to do (less guards) and 2) no one cared enough to actually check if the dead were still there (which they occasionally did in more expensive cemeteries as grave robbings got more common) and c) no coffins to break open

this lead, like many things :), to a rise in antisemetic blood libels! because, of course, who is taking the corpses of loved ones other than the evil jews who drink their blood etc etc etc

helped propagate the """""dark academia"""""" romanticism of the time of universities and dangerously powerful young white men thinking it was okay for them to ignore another society's values and desecrate their dead for shits and gigs (think: egyptomania in the Victorian age and mummy-tasting parties)
