In my title ix compliance training, the first example they gave of discrimination was a teacher repeatedly making comments about what a female student was wearing. And like, nothing he said was out of line with standard dress code practices. A person should logically conclude that most dress code practices violate title ix/are discriminatory because they target girls in a sexual way, but nooooo dress codes are important and necessary 馃檮
There's a reason it's my personal policy to never dresscode a student in class or in any way that could disrupt her learning. Dresscoding happens to female students more often, and disrupt their classtime and it's discriminatory.

for context, sometimes I volunteer at (redacted) running the live stream broadcast. it's come to my attention that I'm not exactly dressed for the location, even though those dress code suggestions are not meant for the tech desk lmao
also! hourly comics day is the first of feburary! I did exactly 1 (one) hourly comic before calling it a day. this is that singular comic a few days late.

i have been talking about this with @broadlybrazen a LOT lately and finally wanted to consolidate my thoughts here on tumblr, but there's an aspect of homophobia represented in our flag means death that i think a lot of people miss, and that might be because it's not the sort that people usually encounter, but like -
the entirety of izzy's plan to have stede killed by the british navy is motivated by homophobia. the entirety of his motive is grounded within homophobia. that izzy is likely to be a repressed gay man does not change the fact that his entire motive for sicking the english on stede is grounded in homophobia.
when chauncey badminton rolls into spanish jackie's bar and asks their motives, jackie is pissed about her nose jar and her favorite husband being killed. izzy's motivation is explicitly "he's done something to my boss's brain". izzy's entire motivation for having stede killed is explicitly because he thinks that ed adoring stede, having affection for stede, having a romantic and sexual (because he thinks they've already consummated!) bond with stede, has literally damaged him as a person and damaged his brain.
i have seen a lot of discussion about how izzy is trying to save ed, and none of it acknowledges that what izzy is doing is straight out of the homophobic evangelical playlist of "i love you and you cannot be like this (gay, queer, feminine, soft), this is not who you are, you are being corrupted, for your own good i will isolate and harass and hound you and i will seek to destroy these corrupting influences so you can go back to being the person i knew".
our flag means death is very earnestly talking about toxic masculinity, about what it means to be a man, about what it means to exist in a world where you have been abused for being your true self (stede), what it means to exist in a world where you have never felt safe to be your true self (ed), what it means to exist in a world where you feel torn between your peace and your familial responsibilities (jim), what it looks like when you're a man who has embraced himself (lucius), what it means to be a man who chooses compassion and understanding (oluwande), and in all the ways it represents men and especially queer men, it digs deep into homophobia.
yes, it does this while being a comedy. yes, it does this without being a trauma porno. but also, yes, it is talking about what it means to have experienced trauma, and what it means to cause trauma, and izzy hands' plan to have stede killed and ed pried away from stede, his plea for ed to see stede being gunned down by a firing squad as a humane death, all of this is about homophobia. it is about the fact that izzy thinks stede is a thing that should be killed, and that ed, in choosing to emulate him, in choosing to be open and soft and vulnerable and gay without violence, has become a *thing* too.
it is about the fact that people can care about you, because i truly think izzy cares about ed, and because of that care they will do horrific things to you and the people you care about, because their regard is a controlling, possessive thing, that feels entitled to dictate the truth of your existence.
there is nothing benevolent, nothing compassionate, nothing loving in what izzy does, but he sees it that way because he genuinely and truly believes that stede is ruining ed because he is corrupting and changing him for the worst, and that is classic homophobia, izzy's just doing it in a repressed gay hat.

WAIT Elle has box braids in s3??? I could cry
I don't think she had bad hair in s1 or s2, but I'm excited that they're actually giving the Black girls Black hairstyles instead of having them wear it out.
Before, it felt like the (all-white, for context) hair department was just ignorant about Black hair, so they put wigs on the Black actresses and only did styles that also work on nonblack hair for their own sake/convenience. This theory was especially supported by the fact that Tara, whose 4c hair couldn't really be styled the same as nonblack hair, wore a twistout that would take literal hours to do every day, but she had box braids in s2! and Elle has box braids now!! I'm so excited!!!
I also feel like this fits her bold, fashion-loving personality so much better than leaving her hair out. Our hair is basically its own accessory, and the long box braids are very feminine. Again, I'm not saying not having a protective style isn't feminine or fashionable (I myself am a fashion girlie with an Afro), but having one is another outlet for her creativity, and I'm glad they're recognizing that now.

This god damn fic had me laughing so hard I started coughing, if you wanna see some of the sinners and co as a bunch of messy idiot teenagers then I highly recommend it. Do heed the tags however as it goes into some heavy stuff on account of Hong lu being a family vlog kid.
Kromer and Ryoshu interaction placed under the cut cause I dont feel comfortable blasting everyone with what Kromer says lol:
