Found a comic in the discount bin today called Frontiersman by Patrick Kindlon and Marco Ferrari, about a burnt-out superhero from the 80s who comes out of retirement to do a tree-sit protest, only to draw fire from everyone in the superhuman community who had unfinished business with him when he dropped off the grid. The comic was really fun in general- I'm a sucker for character studies of capes who are allowed by the narrative to age out of their late twenties- but this exchange I found particularly enjoyable.

They were literally backwoodsmen, who had always resided on the frontiers, forming the connecting link between civilized and savage men; and who did not, in their emigration to the west, form any new acquaintance with the perils of the wilderness. They had been inhabitants of the long line of frontier lying east of the Alleghany mountains; were the descendants of men, whose lives had been spent in fierce contests with the Indians; and were themselves accustomed from infancy, to the vicissitudes of hunting and border warfare. A few of them came from Pennsylvania and Maryland, but the great body from Virginia and North Carolina.
Strictly speaking, they were not farmers; for, although they engaged in agriculture, they depended chiefly on their guns for subsistence; and were allured to the west, rather by the glories of the boundless forest and the abundance of game, than by the fertility of the new lands and the ample resources of the country. They came singly or in small parties, careless of protection and fearless of consequences.
Their first residence was a camp; a frail shelter formed of poles and bark, carefully concealed in some retired spot, in which they hid the spoils of the chase, and to which they sometimes crept for repose at night, or slept away the long inclement days, when the hunter and his prey were alike driven by the storm to seek the shelter of their coverts. At other times, they roamed abroad, either engaged in hunting, or in making long journies of exploration; sleeping in the open air, and feeding upon the fruits of the forest and the flesh of wild animals, without bread or condiment.

Devil’s Edge – 18th Century Colonial Rifleman’s Fighting Knife
Before the Bowie Knife became the iconic American frontier knife, the Rifleman’s Knife was the essential knife and sidearm of the early American colonial frontiersman, Longhunter and militiaman. Both utility tool and fighting dagger, the Rifleman’s Knife was as adept for self defense and war as it was for dressing game and camp duties. The Longhunter or Minuteman would keep such a knife as an essential part of their kit alongside a tomahawk and firearm. Like originals, this example from Devil’s Edge has a long blade which is both thick and rigid to ensure that it can puncture and slice with fearsome ability. The blade is tempered 1070 high carbon steel which is matched to a hilt with a steel guard and a smooth-polished wooden grip which is surmounted with a steel-and-brass-filework bolster and a steel pommel cap. The grip is dual-riveted to the full-length tang for an overall tough construction and its flared shape does an excellent job of keeping the knife from sliding out of the hand and makes disarmament quite difficult for an opponent.
Included is a sheath of tough dual-stitched leather which is completed with a belt loop and a buttoned retaining strap.

“…it is worth while from time to time to take a look backward, and to consider what those endured who went before us. To most of us our own life is almost the only struggle worth considering, and wrapped up in our personal affairs, we do not remember the stupendous difficulties faced by our forebears, who conquered this country and made possible its development, and the ease and luxury in which we to-day have a part.”
Excerpt from Beyond the Old Frontier ~ written by George Bird Grinnell [originally published – 1913]
