Big fan of Invincible, I love the comic a lot. After re-reading again at the end of 2023 I made this illustration (and then made a few prints).

It's Lonely At The Center Of The Earth: An auto-bio-graphic-novel by Zoe Thorogood. Image, 2023. 9781534323865. Publisher's Rating: M / Mature. https://www.powells.com/book/-9781534323865?partnerid=34778&p_bt
First I want to say this book is absolutely beautiful to look at. It moves between illustration styles in a way that feels totally organic, and Thorogood's storytelling talents and the range of illustration styles she employs wowed me in the same way Mike Huddelston's did when I read Decorum. I started a review copy of this book on my iPad and absolutely had to see what it looked like on paper so I rushed out and bought a copy, and I'm not sorry I did that at all. I'm going to loan this book out to a lot of folks I know but I'm keeping it for me.
But here's the thing, this book isn't for everyone, though I hope each of you picks it up. Thorogood starts it by letting us know she's been considering stabbing herself in the neck with a knife. And wondering if the book she's writing, the book we're reading, is just a performance that she can't stop. But she commits to recording six months of her life in an effort to try to make sense of herself (and her depression). It includes bits of her in the past, both as a weird kid being bullied and a young artist getting praise from comics pros and then a book deal. It does not turn into a romantic comedy even when it feels like it might. It's painful and funnier than I can explain and super sad in lots of moments. Thorogood's depiction of the No-Face-ish creature that is always behind her, which no one else can see, is particularly freaky.

Anahita is an Angel from the Angela mini series. The mini was written by Neil Gaiman and drawn by Greg Capullo both of who are comic book royalty in my opinion. I love the series and I love Angela. Anahita caught my eye as I was thumbing through my reader copies and I decided she would be fun to draw.

So #CBR / #TheLineisDrawn this week was Character as a Zombie and I went with Invincible and tried to go a bit Walking Dead here as well. Both are Written and Created by #RobertKirkman from #ImageComics. I loved Invincible as a series and The Black and White look goes well with my style i think from the #WalkingDead .

Sunburn by Andi Watson (story) and Simon Gane (art). Image, 2022. 9781534322332. Publisher's Rating: T+ / Teen Plus. https://www.powells.com/book/-9781534322332?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Rachel's mother runs into a friend, Diane, whom she hasn't seen in years, and Diane and her husband Peter invite Rachel to spend the summer with them on an island in Greece. (Rachel's dad seems to think she should spend the summer working for the local butcher as planned, but he quickly gives in.)
Peter picks up Rachel when she gets off the boat and drives her to their villa where she meets Diane, who is super excited she's there. They can't believe how much she's grown up (Rachel is sixteen) and insist Rachel treat their place like a home or hotel room, coming and going as she pleases. Diane gives Rachel nice clothes to wear and alcohol to drink and anticipates a romantic summer for her. They take her to parties and Diane introduces Rachel to the only other young person there, Benjamin. And of course he and Rachel hit it off and start hanging out, and things do get romantic as she tries to teach him to swim. But there's something off with all of the partying and hanging out, and it turns out Benjamin and others have secrets.
This is a book I'd give to adults and that some teens would find compelling. Gane's art makes me want to visit Greece (or at least this island in the Greece-that-was of the undefined time this book takes place in, maybe during the 60s or 70s) with its white buildings and nearly traffic-free streets.
I'm a huge fan of Watson's graphic novels, and I enjoyed this one enormously. So I'm off to read his other graphic novel that Image published last year, Paris, which was also drawn by Gane.
