Propaganda
María Casares (Ladies of the Park, Orpheus, Children of Paradise)—Spanish-born French actress María Casares was a distinguished star of French stage and screen, appearing in notable films like Marcel Carné's Children of Paradise, Robert Bresson's Les dames du Bois de Boulogne, and (my favorite) Jean Cocteau's Orpheus as the unforgettable enigmatic Princess/[spoiler]. She's one of those people who just kept getting more beautiful as she aged because the depth and richness of her personality and the interesting life she lead shows in her expressions. She had a long and stormy affair with Albert Camus and they wrote each other a lot of passionate and poetic letters that you can look up if you're into that sort of thing.
Lotus Long (Tokyo Rose, Last of the Pagans, Think Fast Mr Moto)— Look at those doe-like eyes! Her abundant hair! Her perfect Cupid's bow!
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut—spoiler for Jean Cocteau's Orpheus included, if you don't want to be spoiled don't click this]
María Casares:
Tumblr media
In Orphée she's death and he falls in love with her. She also dated Camus and they'd write things like "My thoughts are the color of your hair. Monday and a few days thereafter, they will be the color of your eyes."

“To you, with love.”
Tumblr media
SUMMARY: You and Tom do the interview with puppies, and at the end of it, a truth is revealed.
“Tickle, tickle, tickle.”
“Get in there, guys.”
“Hello beautiful.”
“You can go to sleep and come to live with (Y/N) and I to our apartment. Darling, there is no other option but to get married and adopt these puppies.” Tom teases you, winking at you as he plays with the puppies in front of him.
You look away after a while of looking at him, but every minute, every second your heart is ahead of you and makes you think and wonder what is that exciting feeling that you have every time you look into his eyes full of love.
The stage is set for you two as you sit in front of the cameras, in a pink background.
“Hello everyone, my name is (Y/N) (Y/L/N) and I play Avery in Spiderman: no way home and Anna in the film adaptation of the book Anna and the French kiss.”
"I love those." Tom says and shoots you a flirtatious look, making you laugh as he points in your direction before saying the next words, full of pride. “Hi, I'm Tom Holland, I’m her boyfriend and we are going to get married to adopt these puppies."
"Stop it." You say shyly, holding back a smile, although if you and Tom Holland could choose your favorite place in the world, to live in an eternity, it would be next to each other, no matter where you two were, but, as best friends, as everyone in the world knows you two for.
“I play Peter Parker and Étienne St. Clair and we're here with Buzzfeed Celeb to play with these puppies while answering questions, so let’s get started and please bring the puppies!"
What is the best part of playing Avery and Peter?
“Well… For me one of the best parts was to work with…” You leave the answer half-hearted as Tom raises his eyebrows playing with the puppies, sweetly waiting for you to say his name and not that of another great actor or actress with whom you had the opportunity to share screen during that time. "Tom Holland of course.”
"Yes!" Tom sings victory when he hears his name, and he smiles beautifully, because Tom has the most beautiful smile you have ever seen, with those autumn-colored eyes and semi-long hair that make him look like an angel or a dream that you would never want to wake up from, and in that moment, you wonder how he is still a silent and unattainable love even when you had him by your side, so close, yet, so unreachable. "She loves me very much."
"I could say other great names, but... well." You feign seriousness as he shoots you a doubtful look, making you laugh when he looks hurt for a second as you hold a puppy. “The best thing about playing Avery is that we see how her personality evolves throughout these three movies, her starting out as someone closed and tough to someone you can trust with your life because you know she will protect you, because she learned to trust in those who showed her sincerity, like Peter.”
"Yeah, you're right, I mean... for me the best thing was seeing these two characters grow." Tom says, following the thread of the conversation. “I loved the fight sequences that we had that we got to do ourselves. We both trained hard to be able to play the characters that we dream of at some point in our lives so that's great. And I think what makes it so special is that there was real chemistry between us, which is why you can see Peter and Avery so close in the movie. The same with Anna and Étienne."
Is it true that on the poster for Spider-man: No Way Home, isn't that Tom Holland?
"I'm not." Tom laughs.
"It's definitely not, that's not his body."
"Aw, look at her how she knows my body so well." Tom wags his eyebrows at the camera, earning a smack on the arm from you making him laugh. “But no, it's not really me. Also, when have you seen me do that pose on camera? It's strange!"
"Now I'm curious to know who is the person behind that pose. Right, baby?" You say to the puppy in your arms.
“Right, darling.” Tom answer.
Wasn't it strange to have kissed several times in the movies considering that they are best friends?
You and Tom look at each other for a moment, your cheeks turning pink from the question you both silently asked yourselves.
“We try to be as professional as possible.” Tom says, scratching the belly of another puppy. “I think the kisses we gave each other came out naturally because of the love we have for each other. It wasn't uncomfortable at all."
In a certain part it was true. You've known each other since you were kids, but your feelings for him got in the way every time you had to do a romantic scene, yet you were as professional as possible.
If you could be in any other series or movie, what would it be?
“I would like to participate in temptation. (Y/N) is doing super well there and it's a great story. I would like to be a part or at least do a cameo.”
"I can make some calls." You laugh, though you're also serious if it means having him around for months again.
If you weren't a movie star, what profession would you have chosen?
"Tom would definitely have been a carpenter." You joke.
"I think so." He laughs. “I'm not good at math but I'm good at putting things together. I think (Y/N) would have been a doctor or a vet, she loves animals. That's why she doesn't eat meat, although she doesn't know what she's missing."
Could it be possible that there is a relationship between you not told to the public?
You and Tom laugh awkwardly.
“We've been friends pretty much since we were born,” says Tom. “Our moms have been best friends since college and when they both got pregnant the same year it was like: our kids have to be best friends too. But with us it happened naturally, we grew up together, we like the same things and we are united. (Y/N) knows that I love her with all my heart.”
With a puppy in his arms, Tom lies in your lap and gives the camera a sweet smile.
Do you know that fans ship you two together?
“I've seen a lot of that online." You reply. “We have seen a lot of fan art about us, we have seen requests for us to participate together in different book-to-film adaptations because they say we would do a great job together. I think it's lucky that the fans like us so much.”
Have you practiced kissing scenes in private or is it something that comes naturally?
Tom chuckles.
“I will leave that question to the public imagination. Since we even won an MTV award for best kiss, 2 times, I'll leave the fans curious."
As the interview flows, you innocently play and flirt a little from time to time, just to soothe that pain of not being able to be together, although neither of you knows exactly why.
Sometimes, life happens in a second, and for Tom Holland and you, falling in love, too.
And even if you don't know it, Tom hates that you're his best friend in the world, because under the starry nights when you can't sleep and you sneak into each other's room to talk, wherever you two are, or just to exist in each other's company. You look like an angel, his angel, his darling as he usually calls you with the appropriate tone of best friend, because no one can know about his love for you. Except everyone knows, that's for sure, except you, but that's fine as long as you don't discover the secret that lies deep in his heart where his love for you will last forever. Tom is selfish, he knows it, because he went out with some girls to try to erase all traces of you, because he knows that one day soon you will fall in love with someone other than him, and even though that hurts his soul.
Tom secretly hates his love for you, but the secret of his hate is for your beauty, for the way you see the world through your eyes, as beautiful and deep as the uncharted ocean itself, for your free heart when you do things so that everyone is happy, for your tender smile that you give to everyone equally without thinking about their weak and fragile heart, and for that blessed dimple that forms on your left cheek when you smile and your eyes do too.
As you two both reach the limo that will take them back to your hotel, you both smile at each other now that the adrenaline has passed and only calm remains in the solitude of the car.
"I think we did great, didn't we, darling?"
"I think so." You say with a certain sadness, because sometimes, you do want to be his darling, but you know that everything had a limit, but you know too that one day you would cross the line that divided friendship from love, and that day, with the force with which you lied saying that there was nothing between you, you decide to tell the truth. "Oh, by the way, I'm going to adopt one of the puppies so we can get married and live happily ever after."
Tom looks at you in astonishment, but his stupor only lasts a few seconds, because for he, brave this time and armed only with the truth of the love he felt for you for half his life, leans down to kiss you softly on the lips before talk.
"I can not wait."

1921 – Dirk Bogarde, English actor was born (d.1999); Sir Derek Jules Gaspard Ulric Niven van den Bogaerde, better known by his stage name Dirk Bogarde, was an actior and author.
Bogarde served in World War II, being commissioned into the Queen's Royal Regiment in 1943. He reached the rank of captain and served in both the European and Pacific theatres, principally as an intelligence officer. Taylor Downing's book "Spies in the Sky" tells of his work with a specialist unit interpreting aerial photo-reconnaissance information, before moving to Normandy with Canadian forces.
Bogarde claimed to have been one of the first Allied officers in April 1945 to reach the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany, an experience that had the most profound effect on him and about which he found it difficult to speak for many years afterward. Some sources dispute his claim.
After the war his agent renamed him 'Dirk Bogarde' and his good looks helped him begin a career as a film actor, contracted to The Rank Organisation under the wing of the prolific independent film producer Betty Box, who produced most of his early films and was instrumental in creating his matinee-idol image.
Bogarde's most serious friendship with a woman was with the bisexual French actress Capucine.
For many years he shared his homes, first in Amersham, England, then in France with his manager Anthony Forwood (a former husband of the actress Glynis Johns and the father of her only child, actor Gareth Forwood), but repeatedly denied that their relationship was anything other than friendship. These denials were understandable, mainly given that homosexual acts were illegal during most of his career, and also given his following among female admirers which he was loath to jeopardize. His brother Gareth Van den Bogaerde confirmed in a 2004 interview that Bogarde was Gay at a time when such acts were illegal, and also that his long-term relationship with Tony Forwood was more than simply that of a manager and friend.
Bogarde starred in the landmark 1961 Victim, a remake of the 1919 German silent classic Different From The Others, playing a prominent homosexual barrister in London who fights the blackmailers of a young man with whom he had an emotional relationship. The young man commits suicide after being arrested for embezzlement, rather than ruining the attorney's reputation. In the process of exposing the ring of extortionists, Bogarde's character puts at risk his successful legal career and marriage to see that justice is served.
Victim was the first mainstream British film to treat the subject of homosexuality seriously and the film helped lead to the changing of the law. Before agreeing to play this role, which argued for the decriminalization of homosexual acts, Bogarde had specialized in playing leading men in light comedies. "It was a tremendous departure, playing `my first queer,'" he wrote. "The fanatics who had been sending me 4,000 letters a week stopped overnight...not because I was playing a homosexual, but because I was playing a middle-age man."

1933 – American artist, filmmaker and legend, James Bidgood was born on this date in Madison, Wisconsin (d.2022). His artistic output has embraced a number of media and disciplines, including music, set and window design, and drag performance. In time his interests led him to photography and film and it is for this work that he is most widely known. Highly recognizable, his photographs are distinguished by an aesthetic of high fantasy and camp. His work which was inspired by an early interest in Florenz Ziegfeld, Folies Bergere and George Quaintance has, in turn, served as important inspiration for a slew of artists including Pierre et Gilles and David LaChapelle.
He directed the 1971 film Pink Narcissus, a dialogue-free fantasy centered around a young and often naked man. The film took seven years to make, and Bidgood built all the sets and filmed the entire piece in his tiny apartment. He later removed his name from the film because he felt editors had changed his original vision. Consequently, the film bore the word "Anonymous" for the director's credit, and it was misattributed to other directors such as Andy Warhol for many years.
Pink Narcissus was restored and re-released by Strand Releasing in 1999, and Bidgood began to receive recognition. "Bidgood created breathtaking camera movements, elaborate forest scenes, wild Persian fantasy sequences, and a neon netherworld," Ed Sikov wrote in The Advocate that year. Bidgood said he appreciated the attention, but he would rather have received it years earlier.
Tumblr media
'Pink Narcissus' still
His work is characterized by a heavy reliance on invention. His photographs feature elaborate sets built ground up from the materials of the theater, fashion, design and fine art. In a profile of the artist published in Aperture, Philip Gefter writes,
"Necessity was the mother of invention for Bidgood, who created elaborate photographic tableaux in his small midtown Manhattan studio apartment. His first erotic series was an underwater epic called Water Colors, made in the early 1960s, in which he used a dancer from Club 82 named Jay Garvin as his subject. The underwater atmosphere is completely fabricated; the bottom of the ocean was created with silver lame spread across the floor of Bidgood's apartment; he made the arch of a cave out of waxed paper, and fashioned red lame into the shape of lobster. He coated Garvin with mineral oil and pasted glitter and sequins to his skin so the silver fabric under photographic lights would reflect on his body like water. For weeks at a time, Bigood would eat and sleep within the sets he constructed in his apartment."
Many contemporary themes are found even in the earliest of Bidgood's work. Camp, identity, erotics and desire, marginality, and performance all figure heavily in his portraits of nude men.
In 2005, James Bidgood was honored with a Creative Capital grant which facilitated a return to art photography after a hiatus of nearly forty years. His current projects include work for Christian Louboutin and OUT magazine. In 1999 The art book publisher Taschen published a monograph of his work including biographical images, stills from his film, and an interview with Bidgood in its 2008 publication The Big Penis Book, and will re-publish his monograph in 2009. His most recent work was featured in Out in February 2009.

1976 – Angelo Garcia, born in Brooklyn, New York City, is an American singer of Puerto Rican descent and songwriter who was a member of Puerto Rican boy band Menudo from 1988 to 1990.
A native New Yorker born in Brooklyn, New York, he barely spoke Spanish when he auditioned for a spot in the band after seeing a television commercial in Puerto Rico during a family vacation.
After two years with Menudo, García parted with the band and signed on with World Wide Entertainment as a solo artist he recorded several songs including "Magic", "Yours So Completely", and a remake of singer Tiffany's hit song "Could've Been" but it was his single "Don't Keep Me Holding On" that became a success.
After parting with his former label, he released one semi-successful Spanish album for Warner simply titled Angelo. After completing his secondary education and some music projects, he put his recording career on hold after he moved to Orlando, Florida, where he earned a communications degree from the University of Central Florida. After completing his studies, he helped in the launch of a women's gym franchise in Miami called Elements, before returning to New York City to restart his musical career.
During 2005, he participated in a reunion tour of former Menudo members Sergio Blass, Rawy Torres, and Robert Avellanet, performing under the name "Los Ultimos Heroes."
In 2006, García released a Spanish-language pop album titled Cool for which he wrote or co-wrote every song.
In May 2010, García posed for a series of semi-nude photographs for Paragon Men, a gay erotica website. In the interview which accompanied his photo shoot, Garcia openly discussed his homosexuality and his years of sexual self-exploration after leaving Menudo, even working briefly as a stripper and erotic dancer and performing at the now defunct Gaiety Theatre in New York City. He also refused to "out" his former bandmate Ricky Martin, who publicly disclosed his homosexuality a few weeks after García's interview.
In 2012, Garcia joined forces with William Luque (who wrote his first Spanish hit "En Mis Sueños" which sold over 6 million copies worldwide) and began writing and recording a new English language dance-pop album in Madrid called Scandalous. The title track "Scandalous" speaks about a child growing up in the spotlight and how having to grow up prematurely wreaked havoc on his adult life.
On May 7, 2015 Angelo Garcia disclosed in an exclusive interview on the Dr. Zoe Today show that he was sexually abused by a neighbor at 8 years old; by someone close to administration while in Menudo (band) from 11 years old to 14 years old; and again by a schoolteacher after he left the band. Inspired by the overwhelming response to his interview, the show opened their toll free number for listeners to call in sharing their own stories of sexual abuse and aired them on the following show titled, "Breaking the Silence" on May 14, 2015.
In an appearance on Tosh.0 he has stated that he now considers himself Bi-Sexual.

1986 – Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, best known by her stage name Lady Gaga, is an American singer-songwriter and musician. She got her stage name from the song "Radio Ga Ga" by the band Queen. In 2008, she made an album called, The Fame, and she tells us "about how everyone can feel famous." Lady Gaga has a contralto vocal range. Her other albums are The Fame Monster and Born This Way. She has won various Grammys and BRIT Awards.
Gaga says much of her early success is thanks to her gay fans and is often called a "rising gay icon." Early in her career she had trouble being played on the radio, and stated, "The turning point for me was the gay community. I've got so many gay fans and they're so loyal to me and they really lifted me up. They'll always stand by me and I'll always stand by them. It's not an easy thing to create a fanbase."
In the inside of her album The Fame, she said, "I love you so much. You were the first heartbeat in this project, and your support and brilliance means the world to me. I will always fight for the gay community hand in hand with this incredible team."
One of her first performances on television was in May 2008 at the NewNowNext Awards, an awards show on the LGBT television network Logo, where she sang her song "Just Dance". In June, she sang the song again at the San Francisco Pride event. After The Fame came out, she said the hit song "Poker Face" was about being bisexual.
When she was a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in May 2009, she complimented DeGeneres for being "an inspiration for women and for the gay community". She later said that the October 11, 2009, National Equality March rally on the national mall was "the single most important event of her career." As she left, she said "Bless God and bless the gays," similar to her 2009 MTV Video Music Awards speech a month earlier.
At the rally, she sang a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" saying "I'm not going to [play] one of my songs tonight because tonight is not about me, it's about you." She changed the lyrics of the song to talk about the death of Matthew Shepard, a college student murdered because of his homosexuality.
In September 2010, she spoke at a rally in favor of removing the Don't ask, don't tell policy, which stopped LGBT people from working openly in the military of the United States. The gay magazine The Advocate said that she had become an important helper for gays and lesbians where President Barack Obama wasn't.
Gaga released "Born This Way" on February 11, 2011. The song, the lead single from the eponymous album, debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the 1,000th number-one single in the history of the charts.

1987 – Jonathan Van Ness, also commonly referred to by his initials, JVN, is an American hairdresser, podcast host, activist, actor, author, and television personality. He is best known as the grooming expert on the Netflix series Queer Eye, for his work on the web series parody Gay of Thrones, and for hosting the Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness podcast.
Jonathan Van Ness was born and raised in Quincy, Illinois. Van Ness said he comes "from a family of journalists," being the sixth generation of their family-owned newspaper. This refers to broadcast and newspaper conglomerate Quincy Media and the company's local flagship newspaper, the Herald-Whig; Van Ness' mother is the vice president of Quincy Media, and he is a descendant of the Oakley family which has controlled the company since the 1890s.
Openly gay throughout his life, Van Ness experienced bullying for his "femininity and natural flamboyance," and received death threats. He "endured years of judgment, ridicule, and trauma." Of the time, Van Ness said, "Growing up I definitely put on every nail polish, every heel, every scarf – I definitely had my mom's knockoff Hermès scarves in my hair and around my waist – those were my skirts, and I loved it.… But when I was really young, I had really femme-shamey, gender-shamey [reactions] when I would dress like that. When I would play with those things, I knew it needed to be…... behind closed doors."
Although always comfortable in his own skin, he says it did take some time to navigate other people's reactions. In response to the bullying he used humor as a coping mechanism, and relied on a small group of close friends for support. Years later, in the late 2010s, he realized he was gender non-conforming, and non-binary.
When he was younger, he was sexually abused by an older boy at church, and Van Ness said this laid the foundation for self-destructive behaviors. In his early teens, he used online-chat to socialize with, and sometimes meet older men for sex. He was the first male cheerleader at Quincy Senior High School and continued cheerleading in college at the University of Arizona, where he majored in political science. One month in his initial semester at college, he used up his monthly allowance on cocaine and, too embarrassed to ask his parents for funds, turned to sex work. His addictions to sex and drugs increased to also include methamphetamine. His grades fell and he lost his cheerleading scholarship. He dropped out after one semester to pursue hairstyling.
In Los Angeles, Van Ness found a job as a personal assistant at Sally Hershberger Salon. One day in 2012, at age 25, he fainted in the salon while doing highlights for a client's hair. Later at a clinic, he found out he was HIV-positive. He used the revelation to "get clean" from drug use and publicly shared his story, saying, "I want people to realize you’re never too broken to be fixed." He currently works at MoJoHair and Stile Salon, both in Los Angeles, which he co-founded with Monique Northrop of Arte Salon in New York City.
On June 23, 2020, Van Ness and Queer Eye costar Bobby Berk praised recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions that ruled that LGBT employment discrimination was a violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Van Ness described the ruling as "a great step in the right direction." However, both of them still urged the United States Congress to pass the proposed Equality Act.

He re-entered the house in 2017 during the nineteenth series as an "All Star" in which he was the second to leave the house. He was evicted in a twist, which saw him voted as the "dullest housemate". He finished in fifteenth place.

Jane Mallory Birkin (14 December 1946 – 16 July 2023)
Jane Mallory Birkin was born in London in December 1946, daughter of British actress Judy Campbell and Royal Navy commander David Birkin.
She had lived in her adopted France since the late 1960s and apart from her singing and roles in dozens of films, she was a popular figure for her warm nature, stalwart fight for women's and LGBT rights.
She first took to the stage aged 17 and went on to appear in the 1965 musical "Passion Flower Hotel" by conductor and composer John Barry, whom she married shortly after. The marriage ended in the late 1960s.
Before venturing across the Channel aged 22, she achieved notoriety in the controversial 1966 Michelangelo Antonioni film "Blow-Up", appearing naked in a threesome sex scene.
But it was in France that she truly shot to fame, as much for her love affair with tormented national star Gainsbourg, as for her tomboyish style and endearing British accent when speaking French.
It was on the set of the film "Slogan" in 1969 that Birkin first met Gainsbourg, who was recovering from a break-up with Brigitte Bardot, and the two quickly began a love affair that captivated the nation.
That same year they released "Je T'Aime... Moi Non Plus" ("I Love You... Me Neither"), a song about physical love originally written for Bardot in which Gainsbourg's explicit lyrics are punctuated with breathy moans and cries from Birkin.
The song was banned by the BBC and condemned by the Vatican.
Following the breakup of that relationship in 1981, she continued her career as a singer and actress, appearing on stage and releasing albums such as "Baby Alone in Babylone" in 1983, and "Amour des Feintes" in 1990, both with words and music by Gainsbourg.
Gainsbourg's drinking eventually got the better of the relationship, and Birkin left him in 1981 to live with film director Jacques Doillon. However she remained close to the troubled singer until his death in March 1991.
It was around this time that she inspired the famous Birkin bag by French luxury house Hermes, after chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas saw her struggling with her straw bag on a flight to London, spilling the contents over the floor.
She wrote her own album "Arabesque" in 2002, and in 2009 released a collection of live recordings, "Jane at the Palace".
She is survived by two daughters the singer and actress Charlotte, born in 1971, and Lou Doillon, also an actress, born in 1982. She also had a daughter, Kate, who was born in 1967 and died in 2013.

Audrey Hepburn Hairdo
A convertible summer cut especially created for Audrey Hepburn’s new movie Love in the Afternoon
Summer Hairdo
New Hepburn Cut Leads the Fashion
Remember the Italian cut, the Sabrina and Natasha cuts. They were all introduced into the world of hairstyles by actress Audrey Hepburn and quickly adapted or copied by fashion-conscious girls the world over.
Now Audrey has introduced a new cut, designed with those hot summer days in mind and featured in her latest movie Love in the Afternoon.
High, wide, and handsome, cool, comfortable, and exciting, the “Ariane” is convertible. Four different styles to match Milady’s mood and all designed to create excitement at the office, cocktails, evening, or under the summer sun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For shopping or the office and all informal or semi-informal occasions, Audrey her introduced this variation of the page-boy cut. The hair is brushed back loosely and the ends are gently turned under.
In the original cutting for all these styles, the hair is snipped at an even length with approximately three inches at the top and two inches at the temple area. The length at the nape is about four inches.
In setting for this style, Audrey extends part in the center three inches back from the forehead, sections hair on either side of the part and turns under on rollers. Fullness of the front is brushed practically out and the bangs brushed back. The hair is then brushed under in soft wavy page-boy style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A very formal evening occasion demands more attention and Audrey makes a variation to create a bouffant effect. The hair is first brushed back close to the head and repeated by comb and hand; then sprayed lightly. It is then combed back into page boy and the bangs combed forward over hand. Ribbon or clip holds directly behind bangs. A third variation (not pictured) puts the hair completely up and makes an ideal style for cocktail times.
Audrey wears all four styles in the film to create the right atmosphere and the character of the girl she plays. “When the audience first sees Ariane (the character I play), I’m sure they’ll know immediately just what type of girl she is,” says Audrey.
Strictly for the outdoors, holidays, or weekends is the fourth variation (below), which tends to take years off any girl’s age. Audrey parts on the left and sleekly brushes back on each side to form pigtails which are tied with ribbon. The top falls loosely over the forehead to form a side bang.
This new Ariane cut, which is named after the character Audrey plays in the film, is currently the rage in America and even at this stage is starting to spread to the Continent.
In Love in the Afternoon, Audrey plays a petite French lass who has been sheltered from the hard facts of life by her private detective father (Maurice Chevalier), but is suddenly awakened into full womanhood by an internationally infamous Romeo (Gary Cooper). Played strictly for comedy, with a slight tingle of blue, the movie is comparable and easy equal to The Moon Is Blue. And it should be just as popular.

There are moments at the Oscars. And then there are MOMENTS!  You know, the ones that are so extra they deserve awards of their own!  Here’s our countdown of the biggest, baddest and most unbelievable bits in the Academy Awards’ 96 year history. #9 Hattie McDaniel made history as the first Black Academy Award winner in 1939, taking home the Best Supporting Actress trophy for her role in “Gone with the Wind”.  The venue had a strict no-Blacks policy, allowing McDaniel in as a “favor” but forced her to sit at a segregated table in the back.   #8: Sidney Poitier became the first Black Best Actor Oscar winner for Lilies of the Field I963, nearly 25 years after Hattie McDaniel broke the racial barrier.   #7: In one of the Oscar’s more poignant moments, both Denzel Washington and Sidney Poitier raised their Oscars for a figurative toast in 2002, with Denzel on-stage picking up a Best Actor trophy and Sidney in the audience clutching his Honorary Academy Award.   #6: Proving that there’s really nothing she can’t do, Beyonce covered three of the Oscar-nominated songs in 2005, including “Vois Sur Ton Chemin’ which she sang in perfect French!   #5: When Spike Lee took home his first Oscar for Adapted Screenplay for “BlacKkKlansman” in 2019,  he jumped up on presenter Samuel L. Jackson and wrapped his legs around him and  then got bleeped for dropping the F-bomb during his speech.   #4: Halle Berry was sobbing so hard when she became the first Black woman to win Best Actress, she could barely get through her acceptance speech in 2002.   #3:  Warren Beatty announced “La La Land” as Best Picture winner by mistake in 2017—only to recant for the real winner “Moonlight”, a film about Black masculinity helmed by Black Director Barry Jenkins.   #2: In 2003, Adrien Brody stunned presenter Halle Berry when he picked up the Best Actor trophy for his role in “The Pianist”, grabbing her face and planting a full-on kiss on her lips.   #1: Cuba Gooding Jr  was so ecstatic to win Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Jerry Maguire” in 1997, he literally jumped for joy during his acceptance speech and continued to shout out his thank you’s

okay look I'm not going to post a lot about it, but please i beg you: if you haven't experienced The Scarlet Pimpernel either as
the original novel (public domain ebook here)
or the musical (playlist here)
or the film (1934 version [captioned!], or the 1982 version [with young Ian McKellen!])
Then do it.
This story is so amazingly good, and Baroness Emmuska Orczy gave us the OG "hero in a disguise who's alter-ego is a brainless playboy." Without Sir Percy Blakeney, we'd possibly have no Batman or Iron Man or dozens of other familiar heroes.
The original novel is from the perspective of Marguerite St. Just, a beautiful and clever French actress caught up in the Revolution, who meets this idiot fop Sir Percy and for reasons she can't even explain to herself: marries him. Goes so far as to fall in love with him. What she doesn't know is that behind the moronic facade is a sharp-witted man who is using a mask of "stupid British rich man" to cover for his secret escapades as the Scarlet Pimpernel -- rescuing people out of France who have been doomed to the guillotine.
There's swashbuckling, there's betrayal and broken hearts, there's loyalty of "even if she'll never know who I really am, even if I can never trust her, I will love her until the day I die", there's espionage and intrigue, there's a villainous French revolutionary who's definitely in no way similar to Les Mis' Javert (<-he was played by Terrence Mann in the Broadway musical; Mann is also well known for his portrayal of Javert. The characters are... very similar lol). It's got poetic justice and witty banter and nobility and... gah. It's just such a good story.
Personally I recommend the novel (from Marguerite's POV) or the 1982 film (splits between Percy and Marguerite). The musical is amazing, but unfortunately has been off-stage for a long time. (They were trying for a revival... and then 2020 happened.)
...anyway, yeah, now back to our regularly scheduled posting but I got on a TSP kick again today and had to go off about it for a moment.

Happy Birthday to the Legendary Liza Minnelli 🎉🥂🎂
Liza May Minnelli is an American actress, singer, dancer and choreographer. She’s the daughter of actress and singer Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli,
Liza is known for her commanding stage presence and powerful alto singing voice, she is among a rare group of performers awarded an Emmy, Grammy (Grammy Legend Award), Oscar, and Tony (EGOT). Minnelli is a Knight of the French Legion of Honour.
Freddie absolutely adored her …. 💛
“The thought of doing more lavish stage type things does appeal to me, I’ve just got to convince the others. I like the cabaret-ish sort of thing. In fact, one of my early inspirations came from Cabaret. I absolutely adore Liza Minelli, she is a total wow.
The way she delivers her songs - the sheer energy. The way the lights enhance every movement of the show. But somehow I have to combine it with the group, not divorce from it. That’s the difficult thing. I think you can see similarities in the excitement and energy of a Queen show. We are a bit flashy, but I also think we’re sophisticated, the music’s not one big noise. It’s not Glam Rock either. We’re in the show business tradition.
I think on stage you either have the magic, or you don’t, and there’s no way you can work up to it. Liza Minnelli just oozes with sheer talent. She has energy and stamina, which she gets across on stage, and the way she delivers herself to the public is a good influence. There is a lot to learn from her.”
~ Freddie Mercury
Freddie was asked in an interview if he’d like to date Liza Minnelli:
His response, “Oh, no. I would like to talk to her, yes. I would just like to meet her after a performance and take it from there. I don’t know what she would say to me, or what I would say to her.”
Well, Freddie’s dream came true, he met the beautiful legend during Queen’s 20 year anniversary party at Groucho’s in London’s Soho on 18 February 1990.
A moment he treasured!
“When I saw Liza Minnelli at Freddie’s Tribute Concert, it has to be remembered that I was the only face she knew from Freddie’s immediate circle. We had first met at Groucho’s at a party after the BPI Awards in 1990. Our friend Ronnie Fisher who worked for Harvey Goldsmith was accompanying Liza that night and of course, both she and Freddie were desperate to meet each other. Needless to say they got on like a house on fire.
I remember at Groucho’s, once Freddie had met Liza, no one else really existed. She was, to him, not only the epitome of a real star but also the daughter of Judy Garland whose films had been part of his cultural diet for many years since childhood.
Liza looked very glamorous too, dressed all in black, in a knee-length jacket and trousers with a satin top which was cut straight over her bosom. She and Freddie sat together on a banquette and leaned in towards each other and yammered, talking and laughing, bursting out with gales of laughter. It warmed my heart to see Freddie having such a good time for by then he was sick and rarely enjoyed this sort of spontaneous joyful good time which went on for at least two or three hours.
Freddie was anxious to continue the relationship and of course invited her to come and see him at Garden Lodge and they made a date a few days later during her same visit.
Liza closed the show and it was the sheer force and energy with which she imbued WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS which I felt, although Freddie wasn’t physically present, would have made him very happy as she held not only the seventy-two thousand live audience but the billion television watchers across the world in the palm of her hand.
As Ben Thompson wrote in the Independent on Sunday on May 10th 1992: “ ... Liza Minnelli is probably the only person who could carry off the finale.
Like Liz Taylor, she has the kind of fame Mercury was aiming for in his later years – when a person becomes so glamorous you don’t need to remember what they did to get there. If the billion people alleged to be watching needed proof that he’d achieved it, this show was it .”
Peter Freestone
“Freddie, he was crazy as a horse! I performed at Wembley Stadium at the concert to honour Freddie. He was a huge fan of mine, which I am still tickled to know. He was one of the best of all time.” 🌹♥️
~ Liza Minnelli
The first picture was taken by Richard Young during Freddie final public appearance in February 1990 and the other two were taken at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert 💔

Propaganda
Margaret Rutherford (Blithe Spirit, The Importance of Being Earnest, the 60s Miss Marple films)—Margaret Rutherford was a fantastic comic actress who also serves as an inspiration to anyone who feels they’re too old to pursue their dreams - she didn’t start acting professionally until her Kate 40s, but was eventually made a Dame!! Queen of oddball female characters, she is a delight to watch in every scene, and always has big lesbian energy. If you don’t think she’s hot you’re just being cowardly. Also this: [link to PopMatters article]
Cathleen Nesbitt (An Affair to Remember, Separate Tables)—I'd always assumed she was French, given her wonderful performance in an affair to remember, but turns out she's English. So beautiful and fragile in ghat film. Her grace and humour are just wonderful. Just watched so long at the fair where she plays a scheming hotelier, and she rocks that too!! Was also in a stage production of Gigi with Audrey Hepburn!!!
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Tankers from the 9th Company of the Second Panzer Division of the French Army took part in the liberation of Paris. They fought in the battles on the Moselle and, supported by American infantry, were the first to enter Strasbourg.
The oldest tankman was Jean Alexis Moncorger, who fought in North Africa and later took part in the Normandy operation. For his heroism he was awarded the Médaille Militaire and the Croix de Guerre.
The name of Jean Alexis Moncorger is practically unknown. The whole world knows him by his stage name - the great French actor Jean Gabin. Gaben did not want to film in occupied Paris. He went to the USA, acted, met Marlene Dietrich... In her memoirs, she writes: “Once he and Gabin heard on the radio how de Gaulle called on the French to resist.” And she accompanied Gaben to the war.
Jean Gabin returned to Paris as a liberator. They say that Marlene Dietrich was in the crowd of welcoming Parisians and, seeing Gabin driving into Paris on a tank, rushed to him. Whether this is true or not, God knows. But already in old age, the great actress wrote in her diary: “My love for him has remained forever.”

Thought I would make use of my copy of Sally Dugan's study of The Scarlet Pimpernel (2012) and throw out some possible reasons why Marguerite was eclipsed by Sir Percy as the hero of the Scarlet Pimpernel sequels and film adaptations.
Public response to the play and the first novel: Marguerite was clearly the star of the story for Orczy, whether the character was an author insert or a 'fantasy representation'. In the first edition of the novel, the Baroness gave thanks to actress Julia Neilson , 'whose genius created the heroine of my story on stage'. A later edition credited both Neilson and her husband Fred Terry, who owned the rights to the play. Did Terry's performance as Sir Percy make Orczy realise that there was more fictional mileage in the eponymous Pimpernel?
Nationalism: Orczy identified with Marguerite, but Sir Percy is the quintessential English hero. Did the author want to prove her own loyalty to her husband's country by promoting her strong, brave and noble national hero over his rather more complex French wife? Dugan adds that 'this was compounded by pressures - particularly strong during wartime - to identify Englishness with masculinity.' Marguerite is demoted from an active and intelligent political thinker, who unwittingly betrays her new husband and country in favour of her brother and former Parisian associates, to a submissive wife and 'angel in the house' in the few sequels where she appears at all. She is a member of her husband's League but her role is reduced to fretting at home, either at Richmond or Dover, or accompanying Percy to France only to nursemaid the women and children he rescues. She has a stronger presence in Eldorado, which the 1982 adaptation was quick to utilise, but the loss of Marguerite's drive and independence in the first novel is a poor compromise for her reunion and happy ever after with Percy.
Was Orczy forced to favour Percy over Marguerite, to appease her publishers and satisfy her readers? Did she resent or accept the change? I would have loved to read about Marguerite taking a more active role in the League, instead of sitting at home with dark circles under her eyes or falling for Chauvelin's tricks again and again, and I can't imagine that the author who created such a vibrant but impulsive woman in The Scarlet Pimpernel just shrugged her shoulders and gave in, however much she also loved 'six foot odd of gorgeousness'!
(The illustration is 100% not mine, possibly by Julia Braid)

🐈‍⬛ anon here!! !! it’s fine!! it was probably tumblr eating or my signal!’
but like okay okay okay i went down the angel & landoscar rabbit hole and now im thinking of her grumpy/black cat!introverted!street smart bestie!! cause the brain worms are wiggling!! (and i want to preference this by sayjng this is not a self promo at all but more as a treat since i have a baby that’s polar opposite of angel & i think they’d be besties)
but i love polar opposite best friends!! and angel deserves one!! and her and candi would be the most unlikely best friends!! candi is horrible with book smarts outside of english, history, and theater (she majors in technical theater but a triple threat actress in secret). she loves to listen to angel ramble and while angel dresses up and everything, candi lives in black (life of a technician). Usually like oversized hoodie, jeggings or leggings and either her really beaten combat boots or doc martins and she’s always got a backpack/tote on her and has EVERYTHING (candi’s a stage manager they’re basically the theater mom).
candi thrives in social situation even if she hates them. she always knows everything and everything because she’s quiet so everyone just talks around her thinking she’s not listening but she is. candi can usually pick a person apart after 5-10 minutes max of them speaking to her (if they’re willing to look past the major RBF candi has). she loves psychology on the side and is only like 5’2 but is angel’s scary dog privilege outside the grid me thinks. candi speaks in sarcasm and is the only one that can bully/be mean to angel!! cause it’s out of love and never anything serious!! angel knows something wrong when candi ISNT mean!! also candi is hyper independent and loves her space and me time but angel’s (so far) the only one that’s allowed to be physically affectionate with candi and always around her and candi never gets tired or annoyed!! angel actually recharged her social battery!!!
but also angel being like “i forgot this, i forgot that” before lando and oscar can BLINK, candi’s pulling it out her bag and passing it over like “stop being so fuckin forgetful omg???”
just angel with a polar opposite of her as her ride or die!!
im obsessed with this sooo much!!! tbh im the mean friend so i love this a little tooo much. sorry for messy thoughts i was skipping around while writing this !
im thinking ab candy working on broadway after graduating from nyu as soon as you said theater technician. like i can imagine angel being her plus one to the tonys one year when she’s up for an award for being a part of the crew for some musical. like them getting all dressed up and angel is in all white and candi is in all black?? she’s part of the film crew so they get to float along in the background while the stars of the shows get doted on, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. they gossip about all the celebrities they see, whether it’s when angel flies to new york to see candi, or when candi can fly out to see angel at the races.
i can imagine them going out one night and some guy trying to hit on them and candi absolutely destroys the guy with one line and angel just giggles and sips her drink.
angel loves love and thinks everyone should have a partner so she’s offering to set her up with someone every time she sees her, and candi always jokes that angel has enough boyfriends for both of them. angel understands that she likes her independence, but argues that a driver would be perfect because they’re gone ten months a year!!!
i wanna say candi already knows french, maybe she’s from france or spent summers abroad there, so she hears that one of angel’s friends is teaching her and starts to help her learn.
angel doesn’t expect charles and candi to get along the first time they meet, most people are off put by her personality, but they go back and forth, switching between french and english as they bicker through the weekend with grins on their faces.
then one race weekend candi shows up wearing something red instead of all black and angel is like hm interesting that you’re wearing ferrari colors… like i crocheted us matching papaya sets and you didn’t wear it.. but you bought a red corset? and candi’s like “oh uh no this old thing? had it for years.”
candi has a million bags, she’s a bag girlie. i can imagine she has tons of tote bags and it might be the one colorful thing she uses because she gets always buys the reusable ones from the shops she goes to to carry whatever she bought, she likes the reminders of where she’s been! anytime she sees one at a coffee shop or book store, she’s buying it. it’s like a bottom less pit inside of whatever tote she’s got on her shoulder, she has a few studier ones with pockets that she uses when shes traveling and takes the smaller ones on daily trips. candi has anything anyone could possibly need.
i love the idea of lando or oscar getting up to get something while candi is rifling through her bag and they return with it minutes later but angel has whatever she needed. angel’s like “oh thanks baby but candi already got it!” and they’re cuddled up giggling at something on candi’s phone. bf is just like /: why does my gf have a gf
angel is the opposite in every way. purses included. she carries little hand bags that match her outfit. they fit her phone, a tiny wallet that holds her id, her cards, and one of lando’s and oscar’s each in front of her own. she always carries a few travel perfumes, her all time favorite lip gloss (sometimes multiple in different shades) and her newest lip gloss, which everyone except lando understands are two different things. candi carries her favorite gloss around too, just in case angel ever loses hers.
anytime candi and angel see each other after awhile, angel is jumping into her arms even though she’s taller so maybe ir should be the other way around? angel just gets so excited and practically tackles her bestie she missed her so much. candi giving everyone else a cool nod for a greeting but angel always gets a warm hug!!
