A little old Our Flag Means Death meta for you since we STILL DON’T HAVE A RELEASE DATE ! DAVID ! (in alexis’ voice)
I’ve been rethinking about the importance of names and how they address each other in the show since I watched the French dubbing (a way to see the show yet another time but with little differences) and what I found very interesting is the fact that Stede and Ed are both using « vous » with each other : a sort of polite/stiff/formal « you » used amongst people who respect a certain hierarchy/elder/professors etc or that you don’t know enough to use the « tu » : the more intimate or familiar « you ». For example ed uses « tu » with everyone (including Izzy) because within his class, it would have been strange otherwise, except towards superiors in ranks or unfortunately higher class like his mom with her boss probably. Well everyone, except Stede.
On the contrary, Stede uses « tu » with no one except his crew (and yes that includes his wife and children) for the same reasons Edward uses the opposite : his higher class. What transpires between them with this choice is a deep respect even when they are joking with each other…
That is until a certain scene where Ed is saying : Ce qui me rend heureux c’est…toi. = What makes me happy is.. you (you guessed it not vous but tu).
And Stede of course replies :
Tu me rends heureux également. (You make me happy as well).
they proceed to use the tutoiement (using tu) for the rest of their dialogue which adds a very profound intimacy between them, even more so than the kiss, because a barrier has been lifted. What is heart wrenching is that when Stede is asking the petrified orange « how was your day, Edward? », in french he’s reverting to the « vous », indicating either that he knows he lost the privilege of addressing Edward with the closeness they finally achieved or that Ed’s too far away (in distance and emotion) and became a myth again, almost a figment of his imagination, more than a real man/friend/lover.
Anyway food for thought.

The EU French dub of "How Bad Can I Be?" got me in a chokehold so here's a rant-review of it
This is a collab with @etsulovesonceler :3 Absolutely do read their analysis on the DANISH 'How Bad Can I Be?' dub, it's bloody amazing
'C'EST MAL MAIS TANT PIS' aka 'I know it's bad, but f*ck it'
French dub was the first one I listened to with legitimate fascination and interest, so naturally it became my fave. I love how ENERGETIC and upbeat it is. It has the same effect as the Eng "how b-A-A-A-A-d can i be": it's catchy, flows and rhymes nicely and is impossible not to sing along to. You could've told me French was THE original version and honestly I would have believed you with ease, simply because it's SO DAMN WELL DONE.
Singer is a 10/10 for great vocals (obviously) and his acting towards the end of the song: he nails Once-ler's gradual descent into an arrogant, daring, untrustworthy and prideful character. Well, a lot of dubs did brilliantly on this part, but French one's full awareness of what he's doing makes him unique in my eyes. The way he sings out "Et c'est tellement GRATIFIANT" with so much DELIGHT, like he's truly relishing in his success is TASTY. Not giving two shits about the "bad" part at all, but it's The Once-ler, so it's a given I suppose.
SPEAKING OF, LEMME TELL YOU, FRENCH TRANSLATORS ABSOLUTELY COOKED HERE. Whoever wrote the lyrics, they must've been related to the creation of "Biggering" somehow or at the very least were big fans. Premise of his entire song is "I know DAMN well it's bad, but I couldn't care less tbh" The whole perspective is different now and stays somewhat true to "Biggering"s message. Rather drastic change from the original: bolder, blunter, harsher, honest, more ruthless and got a hella serious tone. Sure, he triES to excuse himself with "I don't know what has come over me" and "This is the life the fate chose for me" lines but…yeah, they're of little help, if any.
Some may argue that Once realizing his wrongdoings so early on in the song takes away from the impact "The Last Tree" had on him in the end, but if anything, I believe it gives him complexity. It's all about big talk, justifications and seeming indifferent until he actually HAS to face the consequences of his major fuck-up. The "Well too bad, could be worse for all I care" to "well damn, i should've cared" pipeline is real, which ultimately prompts him to say "actually, DO care. Care a whole awful lot" to Ted as his final message.
This dub singlehandedly added several layers to Once-ler's character with THIS LYRICAL DECISION ALONE and it's one of the many reasons why I adore it so much.
Besides, c'mon guys French is hot. Once speaking french? Attractive, next question.

I'd like to inform everyone that in the very first french dub of FMA 2003 Ed had an absolute Free Pass for swearing. That kid swears like a sailor at a pub one minute and then throws you some very hyperspecific alchemic wisdom the very next.
He was voiced by an actual teenager so I guess that's why it works so seamlessly.

The trailer dubbed in french is certainly interesting. There are some changes that have me thinking a lil. First when Felice informs the girls about Wille coming back, she says “ Wille decided to come back today” which gives the impression that possibly Wille chose to stay at the palace longer than necessary for one reason or another. Another, during the scene when wilmon are sitting in front of the fire (what is that anyways?), Wille says “you can’t blame me for wanting a normal life” which begs the question of if Simon has been blaming Wille. There’s also two that surround August, one is when someone says to Wille “things are tense between you and August”, the french version changes it to “you and the prince” which I find a little weird, then the other is when august says to Wille “you’re not King yet!” it got changed to “we’ll see when you’re king”. Another one for Wille is when he asks the queen “what if I don’t want to?” was changed to “what will happen if I don’t want to?” a simple but possibly impactful change. You guys honestly don’t want to know how many rewatches it has taken to make sure the peices of dialogue were correct. There have been a few other changes pointed out by other people aswell.

Was curious if the French dub was any good, especially considering how popular it was back in the day and ngl, it's a good dub imo. The acting's pretty nice and Harlock's French voice fits him pretty well, almost a close match with Makio Inoue's voice for him.
While they DID change the soundtrack for the French dub, the music they picked out DOES sound pretty good ngl. And they really went full new wave with the theme song. Needless to say, the dubbing team has good taste in music.

Remember when i said french mcdanno is better? well in the french dub of 8x14 steve refers to the restaurant as “their [danny and his] baby” when in the original he refers to it as “their thing” which yk is still cute but come on. steve is not even hiding the fact that he wants to have a child with danny that is JUST theirs. but like yk no homo. just straight men.
