Decided I wanted to listen to Rock Hard, Ride Free (Apple Music says it doesn’t have the comma oh well) and the other day I put all the Judas Priest songs I downloaded on shuffle and I stopped a few seconds into Riding On the Wind so I decided to skip through to see if I could find Rock Hard Ride Free today. It didn’t take long, all I had to skip was Riding On the Wind and Evil Never Dies

In other news I think it’s funny that out of my top 3 or 4 (No Surrender really elevated itself recently) favourite Judas Priest songs, one has “rock” in the title (Rock Hard Ride Free) and another has “burning” in the title (Freewheel Burning) and even though they’ve got nothing to do with fire or rocks as magical powers, I associate both songs and pretty much all Judas Priest songs except United with Gouging Fire and Iron Boulder

In other other news I think Fire and Boulder are tied as my third-favourite Pokémon (I wasn’t really sure before)

Today in Priest History:

Defenders of the Faith is released on January 4th, 1984! The album charted at

#11

on the UK Albums Chart and at

#18

on the Billboard 200 in the US, where it remained on the charts for a whopping 38 weeks. Its highest charting position was on the Swedish Albums Chart, where it reached

! The first single released from the album was Freewheel Burning in December of 1983, followed by Some Heads Are Gonna Roll in February of 1984. The last single released was Love Bites in April of ‘84. Both Freewheel Burning and Love Bites had a music video made for them, which you can see above!

The album was produced by Priest and by Tom Allom, who produced all of Priest’s 80s albums. As for the artwork of the album, Doug Johnson returned from his work on the Screaming for Vengeance cover and designed a similar creature for this album, this time known as the Metallian. As with Screaming for Vengeance, the back cover of the album contains a message:

“Rising from darkness where hell hath no mercy and the screams of vengeance echo on forever, only those who keep the faith shall escape the wrath of the Metallian... master of all metal.”

Additionally, on this album the Priest logo remains in the same style as it appeared on Screaming for Vengeance. This version of the logo is probably the most well known variation of the Judas Priest logo!

Additionally, of course, this album landed Priest in trouble with the infamous PMRC in 1985. With its suggestive lyrics, “Eat Me Alive” earned itself the

spot on the PMRC’s Filthy Fifteen list, as it was deemed inappropriate for its lyrical content. Priest, of course, responded with “Parental Guidance” a year later on Turbo!

002.  EXTRA ORDINARY ( TW DROWNING )

near death experience…  it was new years eve, landon was celebrating the end of 2022 and ringing in the new year with his family at their cabin in the woods in vermont. a lowe family tradition that has been upheld since he was a little boy. the lowe's had celebrated as they always had—the champagne flowing, the log fire burning and a few home truths being spilt after his mother had popped one too many xanax's and father had drank too much of his favourite malt whiskey ending in landon needing to escape his parents resentment and disappointment. grabbing a coat from the closet and a bottle of his own favourite spiced rum, landon announced he was going to get some fresh air and departed the cabin and headed straight for the frozen lake.

he had often walked laps around the frozen lake in the winters spent in vermont when he needed to escape his family and clear his head, he had no idea that night would be any different, or that the ice had slowly been cracking all day long. it only took one wrong step from landon before he plummeted through the ice, sinking into the icy waters below. it was only by chance that his younger brother had followed him outside, come to check on him after exchanging verbal blows with their parents. if it wasn't for the string lights firepit still burning outside, his brother might have missed the last vestiges of landon sinking beneath the ice and might still be alive today. it was his brother who raced out onto the ice to save him, calling for his mother and father before diving into the water with only one goal in mind—save landon.

landon still doesn't know how long he was under the ice for. it could have been seconds or it could have been minutes. all he remembers is falling beneath the ice, the water rushing into his lungs and then his brother dragging his body out of the lake. landon survived his near death experience, walker lowe didn't.

power…  it was two weeks after his brother's death that landon's power first manifested, during the funeral of all things. landon had been asked by his mother and father to read walker's eulogy and landon had accepted—after all, walker was the only reason he was still alive.

the second landon stepped up onto the podium to deliver his brother's eulogy, staring out across the church full of grieving family members and friends, his chest tightened and his breathing fell in laboured breaths. landon felt the cold chill of the ice seeping into his bones again, water lapping at his feet, could smell the birch and maple trees surrounding the lake. he never finished the eulogy, never managed to get a word out of his mouth before he was bolting out of the church, pushing through the doors and... sliding across the ice of the lake that claimed his brother's life. here one moment and there another, landon blinked in confusion at his sudden change in surroundings. it had to be a nightmare, that was the only logic his brain could reason with—only it wasn't a nightmare, it was reality and he had somehow travelled almost four hundred miles from new york to vermont in the blink of an eye.

that was the first time landon lowe teleported.

in the beginning landon had very little control over his ability and tried as best as he could to avoid using it. what he did learn quickly however, was that feeling the overwhelming need to escape a situation or location seemed to be what triggered his random teleporting. since being recruited by cerberus corp, he has gained a better control of his teleporting and is now capable of teleporting on command.

drawbacks / vulnerabilities…  there are some limitations to landon's power, he isn't able to teleport anywhere he's never been before or at least seen extensive pictures and footage of which requires him to do a lot of recon before his missions otherwise it would be like playing basketball with his eyes closed. while he can teleport long distances, doing so repeatedly can give him vertigo and leave him with dizzy spells for anywhere between fifteen minutes to twelve hours. teleporting with more than one person is also a challenge for him and while he is capable of doing so, it renders him exhausted and fatigued as if he had ran a marathon or carried a refrigerator up a six story walk-up.

cerberus corp…  landon was recruited by cerberus after making the headlines and first person accounts were going viral on tiktok and twitter at one of his nightclub's infamous halloween parties about a magician who could teleport! landon was dubious about their sales pitch at first, it all seemed too farfetched even by his new standards but eventually he cautiously accepted their offer—survivors guilt will do that to you. after all, why wouldn't a corperation like cerberus want somebody with his.. talents? in the wrong hands he could make the perfect spy, thief or assassin. the man who doesn't need an invitation or clearance. the possibilities of what he could become were too severe to leave him to his own devices.

codename…  it was given to him by one of his superiors. only answers to nomad when it's used by a superior or in the field, otherwise he will give whoever uses his codename the middle finger and won't acknowledge them further until they address him by his birth name.

headcanons...

i. no longer has contact with his family following his brother's death and being recruited by cerberus corp. landon was essentially excommunicated by them and no longer has access to the lowe fortune so every penny he now owns is from his nightclub.

ii. once teleported during his sleep which he learned after being woken up to a string of offensive curses in a language he couldn't understand, only to discover he was in the bathroom of his brother's old apartment and he was completely naked.

iii. owns a popular nightclub named atlas.

iv. landon is a bit of a lone wolf and always requests missions that he can complete by himself and doesn't require a partner or a team. though he won't admit it, this is for everybody's best interest as he is concerned that he will ultimately get somebody else killed like his brother.

Been trying to watch Xisuma’s latest Hermitcraft videos starting from the one where Grian blows him up and I just finished the one where he shows how his fingers move when he does that mini game and the reminder that he plays guitar made me want to rewatch his cover of Freewheel Burning by Judas Priest (listened to the original twice yesterday, can confirm I’m getting good at lip-syncing the quick bits) and then I discovered that that video is only 2 months old. It came out 6 days after the current season of Hermitcraft began

Chorogaiden

I recently got to read through Chorogaiden, and I think folks here may dig it.

Chorogaiden is a 36 page occult horror ttrpg done in a sludgy, low-fi art style. If you're familiar with World Of Horror, it is very, VERY World Of Horror-y in tone and presentation, but with a more loose, story-first approach to its mechanics.

In Chorogaiden, the players and GM work to build an extremely haunted little town that's on the verge of waking up something eldritch and evil, and then the players explore the town and try to avert a weird-horror apocalypse.

Dice rolls are conducted by spending d12s from a player's pool, adding them together, and only gaining one of them back on a successful roll. This gives the game a feeling of attrition, and is paired with a doom track that is incremented by rolling certain numbers and which progresses the game towards that aforementioned apocalypse.

A lot of what makes Chorogaiden work is the GM, as the game relies on a slow escalation of stakes and revelations to make the story feel compelling. GMs that click with the Junji Ito vibes will sort of naturally know how to progress and escalate. GMs that don't, or that are used to much more structured games, might struggle.

However, for GMs that do like slow-burn horror, and improv, and just enough mechanics to really freewheel without the system flying apart, this might be a dream game.

The author, neonrot, also has a wide body of other work---most with a similar sludgy, arcane feeling---so if you're interested in yokai, esoteric card games, or cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers there might be something to check out there as well.
