Building your professional Social Media platforms

If you're interested in building a writing career and becoming a published author, you need a social media presence.

My biggest success is on Twitter. It's taken me since 2008 when I first joined to get to 11.2k followers/fans. I've gone over that mountain of 10k just this week with 400 new followers in the past 3 days.

On Twitter, pin a post featuring the link and description of your published novel, your blog, your original character artwork, etc. Retweet it once a week.

Search and follow your fellow writers/authors, and artists. Retweet their pinned post after you follow them. If they send you a DM or RT of thanks, reply personally by name.

Do a #writerslift tweet a few times a week. Twit Verified writers and authors like myself participate and RT the original tweeter's pinned post as a thank you. Keep a canned tweet featuring a 2-sentence blurb about your work and a link to your website or your sales page on Amazon. If you don't have it on Amazon, use the link where it can be purchased or read for free. This applies to your young writers with fan fiction sites. We all started somewhere.

Doing 2 of these this week (and I'm doing a #ThirstyThursday one today) got me those 400 followers in 3 days I told you about.

This social media dance is important because agents want to know you have a built-in fan base before they consider your manuscript. In total across all my websites/social media platforms, I have a fan base of around 60k. That didn't happen overnight. I've been curating my fan following since 2015.

I now spend a lot more time keeping all these professional platforms up to date than I should. I should write more. We all need to write more. But, we also need a fan base to get over the barbed wire fence that is querying/publishing.

I figure I should make a post about this since my Steddie art including WIP peeks and just other posts alluding to more stranger things content I was going to create still gets likes and me some follows.

Currently I'm not really planning to finish or post much more Stranger Things content, maybe forever, maybe only for a while. I can't say.

It's not that I lost interest in the ships or show, just that I got the ick towards it from twitter. More specifically some crazy ass people on twit who came after me and a close friend (who didnt engage in the series or the drama at all just happened to be noticed in my twit replies and apparently that made them worthy of extreme harrasment/threats/targeting as well)

I had someone accuse me of everything under the sun, and search through over 7 months of tweets and likes on my twit to find a singular wip request i started (and never even finished) for an anime i didnt know much about to be used as their sole piece of evidence for why I was all these awful things. It was almost comically insane to me because I literally only tweet about my own (23 and up mind you) OC's and a 50 year old rapper, yet here I was having a mini campaign against me by a group of 18yr olds, and my friends getting their own made too against them.

All because I disagreed with some discourse about Nancy (me in support of her chara) and made a stupid steddie joke.

It was honestly my first, like, first hand experience with antis or toxic fandom and it left an extremely sour taste in my mouth.

While I and my friends knew well that all these accusations were bullcrap, and found them quite funny, the descent in physical threats, calls for genital m*tilation, targeted harrassment of uninvolved parties, homophobia/hatred for gay men specifically, and just unrelentless abuse sent our way was really disgusting.

I know as a whole the ST fandom isn't made up of only those types of people, but from the artists I follow on twit, that kind of attacking is uncomfortably common, so I really don't see it as being worth the risk unfortunately.

Which sucks. I'll be the first to say that, because for those few weeks I was having a ton of fun and both the art wips and fic wips i have are something I feel bad not finishing. But the stress it put a close friend under and my own current health problems hold more value.

There's a first for everything I guess, and I'm probably long due for a fandom to ick me away from a series but here we are.

So sorry to anyone who was looking forward to more content.

Maybe in a few months or after the final season I might come back and try again but, who knows :/

I went ahead and unfollowed 90% of ffxiv accounts and artists I was following and my twitter timeline is already so much less petty and stressful and irratating

Really hate this trend of vauging every opinion you see on your own account as "content" ffxiv twit is miserable as hell and it sucks that following fanart isn't fun anymore

And I honestly don't mind artists making personal posts! It's nice to get to read about their thoughts and interests too but when it's always tearing down someone's else's ideas or interests there's no art good enough to be worth having to slog through that every day

Welcome everyone to the first post! I'm Higuy258, a dream smp writer since early 2021 looking to start advertising here on tumblr. The goal here will be to grow my audience both here and on ao3, and I've come to understand that getting some mutuals are a good way to do that.

As for this blog, I want it to be what I never managed to do on Twitter: be a place for me to interact with my audience and other writers/artists in the fandom. You can expect updates on fics to appear here, as well as exclusive behind the scenes content that you won’t find elsewhere.

The first thing I plan to release here is the rewrite to my first and most successful fic, Broken Toys! The first five chapters are already completed and I’ll put them up on ao3 once I feel that nothing more needs to be rewritten and when chapter 19 is finished, which may be far in the future.

hello this made me very happy thank you for telling me this 🥺 ever since sneakers era, the hate they have been getting has become way too much to ignore and i do imagine that on twt is way worse than here! my mutuals here are very receptive of itzy even if they don't stand them but since i do gifs for them and they get spread sometimes i see people making weird comments about them in the tags of my posts and it's genuinely exhausting to see it in my notifications every time they i feel like i need to address it and talk about it! i do understand disliking their music but as we both know it's very much becoming more than that and it's not really about people having opinions on their music anymore! i just can't stand people wanting them to become something that is more palatable to their taste and quite frankly telling that to an artist is just not okay especially when they like the concept they have going on and are proud of it! this hate definitely stems a lot from the fact that they can't stand that they are successful and well loved doing a concept and music that they hate and it has become pretty obvious! i am not actively on twt anymore i just have an account for updates and see what my faves are doing but definitely i would be exhausted if i was exposed to this negativity on my tl and it's honestly why i stopped having fan accs on twt but seriously thank you for sending me this :< pls don't be exposed to negativity abt itzy for too long if it's something that makes you sad it's better to like leave the app for a bit and not think abt these people too much and if needed update your mutual list for the sake of your sanity KJDFKGD i hope you are having a good day

@plaidbats (orugreen on twitter): works with several fun n original art styles for illustration, is working on recreating the world in minecraft and is generally a really nice bloke

@mbohjeezart runs the amazing @witchhatanimation blog which is just what it says on the tin! hand drawn animated version of the panels

@gachahugs (same @ on twit): i'll describe their style as deep and gentle, did a few super detailed pieces you get lost in

@bvllyrag just amazing art style alltogether idk how to describe it their agathe painting is one of my favorite pieces of WHA fanart

@ryugure B) really good lines and sense of movement

morchlav (twitter) has an art style between BD stuff and old timey illustrations à la bilibin

helenathelesbo (twitter) is as into giving characters distinct faces as me and excels in drawing really expressive portraits

EmFoose (twitter) is probably my favorite WHA fanartist, does a lot of short comics that nail the characterization of the cast while bringing her own ideas into the stories

mobteruu and stickymaelk (both on twitter) only occasionally post art but its sweet

and @pimientosdulces but you probably know them already :)
