Sharing my very first sketch and final illustration for the children’s book “Pony Tails for Mikhail”. My initial proposal was for cuter, rounder figures (even the horse is a bit more roly poly), but the author eventually decided on a more realistic depiction; which I was happy to do too. It’s always fun to look back on my first roughs and see how it evolved. If looks could kill, heh. Currently sketching. I was mostly absent online for the past week because I was supposed to have a colonoscopy 2 days ago. It involved a week long change in diet, two days of fasting (during which I was doing a "bowel cleanse" to completely empty the digestive system. It was fucking awful) and swallowing 4 liters of laxative one day, 2 liters the next morning. Horrible. I've done this before and it always sucks (or blows, more accurately). Got to the hospital, had all my meds and allergies listed. I'm allergic to the most common anesthesia (Fentanyl/brevital/versed combo) so I was told a month ago, last week, and that day I'd be able to have propofal instead. Otherwise I have convulsions (acute dystonia) on waking that could last months at worst. Anyway, I was in a bed, hooked up to machines and an IV in my hand when the Dr came and said the anesthesiologist was, "stuck" and couldn't make it. My options were no sedation AT ALL (painful and anxiety inducing) or go home and do it another time. Lose/lose. I guess this is the only propofal specialist in Alberta but who tf knows. So after ALL THAT, the whole entire week of preparation/bowel cleanse/fear of seizures I'm just let go like it's no big deal. "Oops, sorry!" The 6 liter bowel cleansing solution costs roughly $80 that I almost never have, not to mention having to pay for food that for health reasons my husband can't eat (we live below the poverty line) I'm just unceremoniously let go by the hospital because some asshole got "stuck" (I got no further explanation). So fuck it all. I'm getting colonoscopies B4 the age most do only because my sister died at 37 of stage 4 colon cancer found during her first colonoscopy ever at age 34. So I'm at high risk. Here's how I start the process of creating a painting: I always cover my desk in a big piece of paper. That's where I scribble random thoughts and doodles. Highly recommend this if your ideas come and go really quick. Always catch them on a piece of paper before they disappear! Some of the scribbles (second slide) are pretty random, but sometimes still feel somehow really meaningful to me. So I'm trying to conceptualize a world or a situation around them. I do this in 3 different steps. What's the 'object' in the foreground? What's the location/background? And in what kind of art style do I want to fuse all of this together aka the overall vibe. (Like pastel, muted or vibrant tones, or a surreal or realistic environment, or manga-like or more like a renaissance painting...whatever my mood is, or whatever it calls for) Sometimes I shoot my own reference photos of myself (first slide). This helps if you want a specific pose of the human body. The next step for me is to draw out my sketch in the right size on the paper or canvas. (The first doodle is like the egg-stage of a butterfly, and the drawing on canvas is like the caterpillar-stage) I tape up the edges before I paint, and start slowly with my underpainting. (This is when the caterpillar is turning into the chrysalis-stage) When I use acrylic paint, I start out by using a lot of water to make the underpainting in several really light coats. Sometimes in the process I let it dry, and cover the parts I don't like with another color until I'm happy. When my underpainting looks alright I start out to add more and more details and thicker paint coats.
