I found this monument suddenly last autumn in a Finnish forest. There were still fresh candles.
"Ukraine prays for fallen souls." In Finnish, fallen means someone who died in the war.
The monument is in memory of Finnish Winter War between 1939-1940.
The Soviet Union sent Ukrainians as cannon fodder against the Finns with poor equipment. Many of the Ukrainians came here only to freeze to death. At that time the temperature was at its worst -40 degrees. Nothing has changed in Russia's actions.

𝕊𝕡𝕝𝕚𝕥𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕀𝕔𝕖 𝔸𝕡𝕒𝕣𝕥
(request) Kimi Räikkönen x Fem!Reader Kimi only allowed one person to truly know him. You.
Warnings: a bit of cussing, poorly google translated Finnish, and extremely brief research of cities in Finland. Briefly edited.
Tumblr media
Kimi famously never allowed his emotions to be on open display for the people around him. He never let people see behind his frosty facade. He never let people get close enough for them to figure him out. He always kept everyone at a distance so there was no possible way for anyone to truly know the type of man he was. Excluding his parents, there was only one exception to all of it.
You.
Kimi never intended to bump into anyone on his break between seasons. He had chosen Pori specifically because he knew that no one he worked with knew enough about Finland to know where Pori was. None of his colleagues knew that Pori was roughly a 3 hour drive north west of his home town. With a population of 83 thousand compared to Espoo’s 310 thousand, it wasn’t an extremely well known place.
Kimi supposed he shouldn’t’ve been so surprised when he bumped into you, causing your coffee to spill everywhere. But he couldn’t help it. He never would’ve expected to literally bump into someone he worked with.
“Katsu se!” You exclaimed. Too busy trying to wipe off the spilt coffee before it could stain your coat too badly. [Watch it!]
“L/n?”
Of course you knew who it was, how could you not? It wasn’t like you spent a majority of the year around him, battling it out every weekend for top spot on the podium.
“What Räikkönen? Didn’t expect to see me over break?” You finally looked up and made eye contact with the Finn.
“Why are you in Finland?”
“Am I not allowed to go home during winter break?” This had stunned Kimi more than bumping into you.
“Home?”
Your annoyance had disappeared a while ago, the whole situation was too amusing for you to be truly annoyed. “Räikkönen, just because I race under a different flag doesn’t mean I’m not associated with another country. I was born in Pori, spent 14 years here before moving overseas.”
After that the rest was history. You ended up spending more and more of your winter break around Kimi. So much time that the Finn found himself opening up more and more around you. At first he had been the same cold, closed off Kimi that you were used to, but soon enough his metaphorical ice walls began to melt around you. He learnt that your mother had been born in Finland and had met your father while on holiday. You told him that your father had moved to Finland to be with your mother and that you always spent winter break in Pori. You travelled so much for the rest of the year you found there was no point travelling between seasons.
Throughout your time together, Kimi found himself telling you things he had only ever told his parents. He told you how he had wanted to eventually settle down and start a family. He told you that he truly did believe that Formula 1 was a hobby, that it wasn’t just something he said for the cameras. He told you that sometimes, in the privacy of his own home, he often thought about his imaginary daughters running around and filling his house with giggles and bright smiles.
Eventually, the winter break would come to an end, and you would both have to go back to the rush of racing every weekend. About a week before preseason testing, you had been hanging out with Kimi in your living room. Talking about everything you had done so far in your careers. Kimi had smiled when you started to laugh at the story he had just finished telling.
Watching you laugh at something he said had him feeling almost giddy with nerves. He had never felt this way with a woman before. Not one to let an opportunity slip by, he spoke up softly.
“Y/n?”
“Yes Kimi?” You responded, trying your best to calm down from laughing.
“Let me take you on a date.”
“Kimi- what?”
“I want to take you on a date. These last months have let me understand that everything I want in life, I want them to be with you.” He said. Taking your hand in his, he spoke with a sincerity you had never seen or heard in a man before. “Let me take you on a date and show you.”
Your free hand had covered your mouth as he spoke. A month ago, when you realised what your own feelings for him were, you had become determined to never mention them. There was no way The Iceman of all people would feel the same about you. Yet here he was. Sitting on your couch and asking you to go on a date with him.
“Yes.”
Kimi gave you a smile that had become less and less rare the more you spent time with him.
“Thank you.”
It had been three years since then. In that time you had gone on dates in every country you had travelled to. You both celebrated every win and comforted every loss. Two years into dating, Kimi had asked you to move in and marry him and during the mid-year break, surrounded by both your immediate families, you had become Y/n Räikkönen. Kimi hadn’t cared about telling the other drivers or the media, and you had agreed saying that it would be far funnier if they found out on their own. So nothing had changed in your public routines. In your head you thought the funniest part of it all would be that no one on the grid knew you had even started dating each other.
Neither of you had gone out of your way to avoid the other, in fact the other drivers often saw you both hanging around each other. Nobody had any inkling that You and Kimi were together as more than friends. Many gossip sources chalked it up to the two “outcasts” of the grid hanging out and left it at that. So it was a surprise to everyone when some fans had pointed out on social media that your signature had changed from your race number and maiden name to Räikkönen.
Jensen and Fernando, being constantly online, had dragged Sebastian to immediately start searching for the Finn. What they had found was more surprising than your change of signature. Opening the door to Kimi’s drivers room, the three of them saw you sitting on the couch with Kimi lounging on your lap, asleep. You had one hand running through his hair as he slept while the other was scrolling on your phone. Looking up as the door opened, you smiled when you saw who it was.
“Hello boys. Anything I can help you with?” You asked. Fernando was too shocked to say anything and Jensen had just started stuttering out incoherent sounds, so it was up to Sebastian.
“There are fans saying that your signature has changed.”
You huffed a gentle laugh, trying not to disturb your husband from his rest. “That’s because it has.”
“But why?” Jensen had managed to get his English under control enough to start actually speaking.
“Why’d you think it would change Jense?” You were having too much fun with this.
“But you have never shown any interest in Kimi. And Kimi doesn’t show interest in anything, so when?” It was Fernando’s turn to get over his shock. “How long have you been married? Why did we not know?”
By now Kimi was definitely awake, though he made no show of it. You could feel Kimi’s hand that was resting between you and the couch back start to gently stroke your thigh. You knew he was also amused.
“I wasn’t aware I needed to tell you who I was interested in. If I’d known I would’ve told you three years ago.”
“Three years!?” The three of them cried.
Eyes still closed, Kimi mumbled to you. “Käske heitä naimaan. Nukun.” [Tell them to fuck off. I’m sleeping.]
“Luulen, että olet levännyt tarpeeksi, rakkaani.” You replied laughing. All Kimi did was groan. [I think you’ve rested enough, my love.]
“If you wake up properly, I’ll give you a kiss.”
Opening his eyes, Kimi briefly glanced at the three flabbergasted men still in his driver's room, before looking directly at you. “Teet kovaa kauppaa, vaimo.” [You drive a hard bargain, wife.]
He sat up nonetheless and moved so you could place your legs over his lap. He looked at the others and spoke. “What else did you want to blubber about?”
Kimi was aware that he had a resting bitch face, and most times he didn’t mean to glare at people, but the three men in front of you had clearly been terrified of what Kimi might do if they stayed, so they quickly made their way out of the room.
“I told you they would find out from the fans.” You laughed. A smile broke out on Kimi’s face.
“I really thought they were smart enough to figure it out themselves.”
“Sebastian I could understand, but we’re talking about Jensen and Fernando here, my love. They were never going to figure it out on their own.”
“That’s true.” Kimi shifted you closer to him, so that you were sitting on his lap facing him. “I believe I was promised a kiss, Wife.”
“How could I ever deny you, Husband?” You whispered, leaning in close and gently placing your lips to his. His hand moved to the back of your neck to pull you closer and deepen the kiss. Both of you aware of the three drivers that had yet to move from the other side of Kimi’s door.
It wasn’t your fault if they saw something they shouldn’t’ve.

This is more for mun, than for Finland in rp. and this isn't a question. My sister and I had discussed the human names in Hetalia and that Himaruya isn't the greatest at them. We got to Finland, and talked about his last name. We learned that he's a mythological figure. ok cool. the more we talked, the more we made some headcanons. Finland is canonically... bad at naming things. His name choices for the dog, before settling on Hanatamago were strange. (1/?)
Tumblr media
((That is a fun hc! I will say though, Väinämöinen actually doesn't sound unrealistic as a Finnish last name. :D
Names of figures from Kalevala are more often used as first names (such as my two cats Kyllikki and Kullervo :3), but Ilmarinen and Tapio are good examples of last names taken from the mythology!
I haven't encountered Väinämöinen as a last name in the wild so to speak, but a shortened Väinämö does indeed exist both as a given name and family name. (It actually happens to be our current president's middle name!) So a whole Väinämöinen as a last name would probably be rare but not raise eyebrows here!
(EDIT: according to a quick search on the civil registry there have been exactly 7 people with the last name Väinämöinen, though none currently living. (unless...?) I also looked up my last name and it's only ever been owned by 83 people, living or dead, so hey a pretty special boy over here >:3)
tldr; dave gilgamesh? in finland? more likely than you think))

On 13th March, 83 years have passed since the end of the Winter War. The 105 days of battle ended in a peace treaty signed in Moscow. The terms were hard but Finland was not occupied by Soviet troops.
Finland paid a high price for defending its independence. More than 25,000 Finns died in the war effort and about 44,000 were wounded. Civilian casualties numbered over 1,000. Soviet losses in the war were many times higher.

Neuvostoliiton tappiot sotatoimissa olivat moninkertaiset.

Oh right, today is also 83 years to the day from the Soviet false flag operation in Mainila that started the Winter War.
Finland did well all things considered. May Ukraine fare even better and win the war.

Newspaper Helsingin Sanomat covered a recent survey conducted by the Finnish Red Cross (SPR) in which 82 percent of people in Finland responded that they have either personally experienced or witnessed racism.
Some 83 percent said what they witnessed had not been directed at themselves. In addition, 15 percent of survey respondents said they had witnessed or experienced racism directed at themselves and others.
According to SPR's research, racism was experienced and witnessed most in large cities, where more people with an immigrant background live.
"Witnessing and experiencing racism is also more pronounced among people with a university degree. People over 65 years of age and those living in large areas of eastern and northern Finland are less likely than average to report experiencing or witnessing racism," SPR commented in a press release on the survey results.
However, despite a majority saying they recognised racism, just under half, 45 percent, responded that they had intervened.
On the other hand, 78 percent of respondents under 25 years old said they had intervened.
"It's great that young people and young adults are so vocal about their ability to tackle racism. However, the responsibility should not lie solely with young people. Young people themselves have also expressed the wish that adults should be more active in tackling racism," said Sanna Saarto, SPR's anti-racism action planner, in a press release.
Questions over summer berry crop
Rural-focused newspaper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus carried a warning over this year's berry crop in light of the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs suspending visa applications for berry pickers.
The Ministry announced last week that it would suspend visa applications for wild-berry pickers from Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar over concerns that the practice leads to exploitation and human trafficking.
Valio, a domestic food producer in Finland, said that if next summer's berry crop is left unpicked in Finnish forests, they may have to resort to importing berries for their products.
"We want to be able to buy responsibly produced domestic forest berries. If we cannot buy domestic wild berries, we may have to buy foreign wild berries," said Kirsti Rautio, Valio's Procurement Director.
However, Rautio said it was too early to assess the impact of the Foreign Ministry's decision on both the availability and prices of domestic wild berries. Valio has not yet made any decisions on berry purchases for next summer's picking season.
While Rautio said there would likely be issues in procuring berries this summer, the responsibility of how they were sourced was also important to the firm.
"We do not tolerate any human rights violations in our supply chain. The main responsibility for monitoring lies with the authorities, and any human rights challenges that arise must be resolved at the Finnish level under the joint leadership of the authorities," Rautio told MT.
Best month for summer holiday?
With winter rearing its head once more, maybe your mind has wandered to summer and are wondering what the best month is to take your holiday. That's what tabloid Ilta-Sanomat asked meteorologist Markus Mäntykannas.
Based on data from 1991 to 2020 showing when it was warmest and sunniest, Mäntykannas said that August might be the best month for heading to the summer cottage.
"Some people may have outdated ideas about when Finland's summers are at their best. August has been a bit of an underrated month for us. I was a bit surprised myself when I looked at the statistics and saw that August is warmer than June in most parts of the country," said Mäntykannas.
Mäntykannas also pointed out that in coastal areas and in the archipelago, temperatures are significantly warmer in August than in June.
"An interesting point in the statistics is that May and June are the months that have warmed the least over the decades. It seems that the late summers have warmed more," said Mäntykannas.
Most people in Finland start their summer holidays at Midsummer at the end of June. Unlike in central and southern Europe, August is not such a popular holiday time in the Nordic countries, partly influenced by school beginning then.
Many businesses and services aimed at holidaymakers also shut down in early August.
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has predicted that this coming summer will be slightly cooler than usual for Finland, while it will be warmer-than-average for southern Europe.

The Winter War began on 30 November 1939, when the Soviet Union attacked Finland without declaring war. The fighting lasted 105 days. Tens of thousands sacrificed their lives so that we could celebrate 105 years of independence on 6 December.
The fighting took a heavy toll:
more than 25,000 dead
around 44,000 wounded
more than a thousand civilian casualties
around 430,000 lost their homes due to loss of territory
Soviet losses were many times higher.

Good evening Europe!
It's that magical time of the year again when we all come together to trash each others' musical tastes!
The point system has changed many times over the years, and as various countries have come and gone, it is hard to determine who did "the best" based on the points they got alone as, since the maximum available points doubled with the jury and televote scores no longer being combined, post 2016 entries would have an obvious advantage and, likewise, the contests with 40+ participants would also have more maximum available points to give so a country getting 200 points in 2004 is not the same as another getting 200 points in 2009 or 2016.
But if we divide the points each entry got by the maximum available points for the respective year it competed, we get a percentage score that can easily be measured against entries from years with differing point systems.
So, for example, in 2009 42 countries participated. The maximum points each country can award is of course 12 and you can't vote for yourself. So 41 × 12 = 492. Let's then take Norway's total of 387 points and divide it by the 492 total of maximum available points. We get 78.6, meaning Norway and Alexander Rybak amassed 78.6% of the total points in 2009!
In the case of tie breaks the entry that placed higher in its respective year wins the tie break and if there's still a tie I used rules similar to the actual contest; the winner of a tie is the entry that received more points from televoting. If there are no split results available to the public, the entry that received points from more countries, then the country that received more 12 points, then 10 points all the way down to 1. If the tie cannot be broken in this way, the entry that performed earlier wins the tie break.
I've set 2004 as the "beginning of time", if you will, because that's when I started watching Eurovision and because there also had to be some sort of limit to how far back I would go with this 🤣
With that very long-winded explanation of my measuring tactics out of the way, shall we see our current Top 100 before new entries are added after the 2023 Grand Final is over?

July 18th! Miro Heiskanen's birthday!
To celebrate, I will start posting a new 5-chapter fic, one chapter a day through this week.
I'll post around lunchtime in Finland, which means that for American readers, a new update should be waiting for you like a morning paper fresh from print when you wake up.
Yes, it's a Helsinki spin-off of my Oulu summer fic Summer Kisses but it's an independent story and can be read as a standalone.

Katso Козаки | Пороблено в Украине, пародия 2014 YouTubessa

Something light in a horrific situation:
7 years ago, Volodymyr Zelensky danced in heels and latex for a parody video of an Ukrainian boy band on TV.
As if we didn't have mad respect for the president of Ukraine based on his leadership in fighting back the Russian invasion, there's more proof that he's 💯 badass.

I've been meaning to ask this for ages and your last post finally inspired me to do so.
So, if you don't mind: what would be some sweet pet names in Finnish? (something to the effect of darling/sweetheart/my love, if possible)
I cannot find many sweet ones online and I'm kinda getting desperate at this point...
Thanks in advance :)
Hi!
Glad you asked because I was just thinking that I might have to do a post about this.
Here are some off the top of my head:
Rakas (dear, loved - this is used both in addressing very close people like dear - rakas äiti, dear mom, and by itself when it has basically the same meaning as the next one ->)
Rakkaani (my love)
Kulta (literal meaning gold but this is the most usual pet name. I think it is used pretty much the same way as darling and sweetheart - it can also be used in a condescending way, lapsi kulta, child dear, has more the sound of a oh sweet summer child. But basically this would be your honey/darling/sweetheart)
The three above are the most usual ones, the ones below can be and are also used:
beibi, hani (literally the english words baby and honey, only written the way they would be written in finnish. Beibi can also be used in the same meaning as babe, referring to a cute, hot, desirable girl)
Muru (literally crumb, I think it's shortened from the next one ->)
Kullanmuru, kultamuru (gold crumb, for me the uses of these are closest to Sweetheart or sweetie)
Pupu, pupunen (bunny, (li'l) honeybunny - for people that you can see calling each other bunny. I get a feel that this could be easier used by a mother to a child than an adult couple to each other but, you know, if you're the type)
Tyypit, rakkaat, anyone, feel free to add your thoughts and suggestions!

My #1 post of 2022
I want everyone to consider that the purity-anti-tendencies against any chosen part of fanfic contribute to broadening the platform for these tendencies overall. There is a parallel between the willingness to censor uncomfortable themes and tropes from Ao3 and the willingness to censor LGBTQ+ education from schools or ban books from public libraries. If you don't want the latter, do not contribute to the former.
Not every story is for everyone. Choose your reading, use the back button liberally but the abuse report button with great consideration.
Remember:
the author is not the same as their work
what would be illegal, for a reason, in the real world, is not illegal to imagine
the author that you wish to hurt for something they have created is a real living person; the characters in their fiction are not
