bruce springsteen has been the soundtrack to my childhood, thanks to my dad. i went with him to see bruce’s tour of his album the river and it was amazing. this song is from an album he made later in his career and its full of old american folk/irish folk songs and i love it - erie canal being my favorite.

the erie canal is a canal flowing into new york (?) that was used for import and trade. this song is about a guy and his mule - used to pull the boats and the chorus’ line “low bridge - everybody down!” is obviously about how when standing on the roof of a canalboat/barge if approaching a bridge you’d be hit pretty hard unless you got down. (all knowledge based on what my mom told me, correct me on any incorrections, or add anything else you know) :):)
