I was surprised earlier this week when I came across the word “spicy” (as used to describe rumors/gossip) in an article from 1906, and got curious how old the expression was. After digging around for a few hours, the earliest use of the word in this context I could find was 1845. Interestingly the word “juicy” (same context) appears to have popped up not long after in the mid-1850s.
So I just thought it was very important for all you historical fiction writers out there know that you can have Queen Victoria discuss the juiciest gossip with her ladies in waiting or Millard Fillmore ask for the spicy details and be 100% historically accurate.

Patti Smith arrived in New York on July 3, 1967, via the decidedly un-scenic Port Authority Bus Terminal (625 8th Ave.), where she immediately transferred to the subway and headed for Brooklyn. She hoped to connect with a friend who was enrolled at the nearby Pratt Institute, an Engineering and Arts college in Clinton Hill. Unfortunately, it was summer break and her friend had moved to a new apartment. One of the current residents knew where her friend could be found, though, and offered to direct her there. This would be her first fleeting encounter with Robert Mapplethorpe, a young Pratt art student, and the man who would ultimately become her closest companion for the next few years. Alas, her friend was not at the said address, so Patti would sleep rough for the next several days, on porches, and in Central Park close to the statue of Alice in Wonderland.
Like many young newcomers, she would wander the streets of Greenwich Village and spend hours observing the people in Washington Square Park, an active gathering place for artists, folkies, activists, and people of every stripe imaginable. She explored St. Marks Place and the East Village, then a fairly ragged but colorful neighborhood of immigrants, hippies, artists, and the poor, always dragging her plaid suitcase along with her. One day she and a street friend found a little money and treated themselves to a hot meal at the Waverly Diner (385 6th Ave.), but otherwise she ate day-old bread and handouts. The rest of the time she was desperately looking for work, and after a disastrous single shift waiting tables at a Times Square restaurant, she found work at the midtown flagship location of Brentano’s (586 5th Ave.), a venerable bookstore near Rockefeller Center. She still had no place to stay, though, and often surreptitiously slept in the store overnight, only to emerge from the bathroom in the morning as the others readied the store. One day she ran into Mapplethorpe again in the bookstore. He, coincidentally, worked at the downtown branch of Brentano’s (20 University Pl.) in the Village. Not long afterwards, in the midst of an uncomfortable date with an older bookstore patron, Patti spotted Mapplethorpe in Tompkins Square Park, where he happily rescued her by posing as her boyfriend. The two shared an egg cream at Gem Spa (131 2nd Ave.) while commiserating. The pair would become inseparable. He brought her to stay at his place, an attic room in the home of some friends on Waverly Avenue in Brooklyn. After several weeks, the two had enough money saved for their own place nearby at 160 Hall St. on the second floor for $80 per month. This would become their headquarters for well over a year.
By winter, both Patti and Robert had lost their jobs at Brentano’s but found seasonal employment at FAO Schwarz (745 5th Ave.), the gigantic toy shop. Robert decorated windows, but Patti was stuck at the cash register. Afterward, she worked briefly at Argosy Books (116 E. 59th St.) before settling at Scribner’s Book Store (597 5th Ave.). Scribner’s would be her steady job for the next couple of years. Robert, meanwhile, went through a succession of jobs, one of which was as an usher at the Fillmore East (105 2nd Ave.), where he was able to get Patti in to see the Doors. Jim Morrison was to have a lasting influence on her...

i hate to be the basic bitch i am, but emilia holdoncallfailed, can i request a playlist based around the kind of distorted hauntedness of battery in your leg?
dear anon, i don't think you're a basic bitch but i do suspect you're some kind of emotional masochist based on this request.
spotify + youtube
how do you sleep? — lcd soundsystem [i think this is the closest analog to BIYL due to the distorted hauntedness you described and also being about james murphy's estranged ex-collaborator who was a childhood friend of his.]
jane cum — japanese breakfast
hazel st — deerhunter [h/t gen of course]
i don't smoke — mitski
wish you were dead — scheer
nobody else will be there — the national
don't holdyrbreath (girly-sound version) — liz phair
fillmore jive — pavement
beside myself — fanny
winter song — yoko ono
which will — nick drake
says elliott — sibylle baier
moon over goldsboro — the mountain goats
razor love — neil young [not on spotify unfortch]
railroad boy — the magnetic fields
margaret vs. pauline — neko case
cold apartment — vagabon
1995 — the radio dept.
a worrying thing — yo la tengo
by some miracle — philip selway
comin' back to me — jefferson airplane
BONUS: how do you sleep? — john lennon [far, far more bitter than BIYL but nevertheless probably THE ultimate band breakup song and the obvious inspiration for the lcd soundsystem track. it also features a climactic guitar solo like in BIYL—this one is played by george harrison so it's similar to the blur song in that there is a ghost of the old band within it via guitar solo...something to think about...]

Qualifying Rounds
After 851 submissions and 346 total schools, submissions are now officially closed. The bracket rounds will consist of 256 schools. All schools that got two or more submissions are guaranteed a place in the bracket rounds. Schools that got only one submission will have to go through qualifying rounds to get to the brackets. There are 214 schools with only one nomination, and 125 available spots in the bracket. Following the qualifiers, schools will be seeded according to the number of submissions they received.
Qualifiers will consist of 43 polls, with each poll containing five possible schools. The polls were created using a randomizer. The two schools with the most votes will immediately advance to the bracket round. The school with the third most votes has a good chance of advancing as well, but not guaranteed. There are 38 spots available for the 43 third place winners. Thus, I'll be eliminating the 4 third place winners with the least number of votes (numbers as opposed to percentages).
(I know this all seems very convoluted, but I am an English major trying to do math, this is about as well as it was ever going to go.)
I'll be posting six polls a day (except for the last day where I'll be spicing it up by posting seven!) Below the cut you can see which polls will be posted each day. If the school you submitted doesn't appear in the qualifiers, then congratulations, that means it got two or more votes and has immediately advanced to the bracket stage.

In an electrifying announcement that will cause anticipatory convulsions through the world of metal, Bay Area icons MACHINE HEAD have announced the first leg of their 'Slaughter The Martøur Nørth America 2024’ tour. Forgoing their “An Evening With…” format for the first time in a decade, MACHINE HEAD will have LA’s cyber-metal masters FEAR FACTORY, Sweden’s ORBIT CULTURE, and Louisville, KY’s GATES TO HELL in tow guaranteeing your 2024 starts off as heavy as humanly possible!
'Slaughter The Martøur Nørth America 2024’ will kick off with a “hometown” show for MACHINE HEAD, their first since 2020 in San Francisco on January 19th. Then the tour heads north with shows in the Pacific Northwest as well as eight shows in Canada. Other stops include Chicago, Orlando, and Houston before concluding in Los Angeles on February 24th at The Bellwether.
MACHINE HEAD’s founder Robb Flynn states, "Head Cases! This will be the greatest metal tour on earth! So stoked to be getting back on the road in America/Canada with 4 masters of soul-crushing heaviness and an absolutely earth-shattering bill. Fear Factory has long been our brothers-in-arms, pioneers, and innovators of a sound that had yet to exist. Orbit Culture are the fast-rising Swedish modern metal maniacs bringing their unique spin to the world, and Gates To Hell absolutely blew my mind at Milwaukee Metalfest with their sheer savage brutality. North America, we’re ready to crush skulls, crush beers, and crush everything in our path!
Confirmed dates for MACHINE HEAD's'Slaughter The Martøur Nørth America 2024’with direct support FEAR FACTORY as well as ORBIT CULTURE, and GATES TO HELL are:
