Klondike Saloon in Harney Oregon

The proprietor of the Klondike Saloon in Harney City was J. C. Buckland. Born in Canada his father became a Naturalized Citizen when he was a teenager. He was granted a liquor license in April of 1889. He was also involved in horse racing, farming and once took a string of horses to Alberta Canada where he made a decent return on his efforts. He passed away on April 2, 1907. I believe he may be the older gentleman in both photos.

Oregon is now the new home of the world’s 19th dark sky sanctuary, offering pristine views of the night sky across over 3,800 square miles, making it the largest of its kind.

The certification, issued by DarkSky International, involved a years-long effort by federal, state, and local officials, community members, and several legal jurisdictions.

The first zone of the total amount of area submitted for certification comprises 2.5 million acres in Lake County, southeastern Oregon. The certified area is about one-half the size of New Jersey in a region frequently referred to as the “Oregon Outback,” considered a paradise for stargazers.

The Oregon Outback, an area of southeastern Oregon, has earned a new designation as the largest of the Dark Sky Sanctuaries not just in the U.S., but internationally. DarkSky International, a nonprofit organization with a mission to educate on and minimize light pollution, has certified that Phase 1 of the Oregon Outback International Dark Sky Sanctuary (OOIDSS) is now a International Dark Sky Sanctuary. With this certification, the Oregon Outback sanctuary is the largest of the 19 certified International Dark Sky Sanctuary sites in the world, The Guardian reported. According to DarkSky International, Phase 1 of OOIDSS spans 2.5 million acres in Lake County, Oregon, and the finalized area of OOIDSS will cover 11.4 million acres. “As the population of Oregon and the trend of light pollution continue to rise, the unparalleled scale and quality of the Outback’s dark skies will long serve as a starry refuge for people and wildlife alike,” DarkSky Delegate Dawn Nilson said in a statement. “Adherence to the [Lighting Management Plan] will allow this large expanse of land to serve as a demonstration site of sustainable lighting principles not only within southeastern Oregon but possibly the Pacific Northwest Region.”

There are so many wonderful, detailed art works in Hannah O’Hare Bennett’s current exhibition Recede, on view at Dunedin Fine Art Center. They are all worthy of a closer look.

Below is the artist’s statement about the work-

“From the moment we are born until we die, we are almost constantly in contact with cloth as we move through our lives. Without thinking about it, we are familiar with its varied qualities–the simplicity of white cotton, the luxury of silk velvet, the flexibility of knitting, the structure of weaving. We can see the impact of time in a piece of fabric: how it wrinkles, stains, takes repairs, unravels. Handmade paper is a kind of non-woven cloth and is in fact often made of recycled cotton or linen. It can be dyed, stitched, wrinkled, torn, and repaired much in the same way as fabric.

My work explores the expressive possibilities of these materials, which I use to deal with my fascination with time altered urban and rural landscapes. A piece of land in the Oregon outback, the brick wall of buildings in Madison, a leafy Minneapolis neighborhood, etc. are all impacted by the passing of time, actions of human beings, weather. These occurrences can be incremental or sudden, and the change they bring almost imperceptible or very radical, each change layering on top of what came before. I use that observation to inspire my work. Fabric surfaces are worked over with layers and layers of pigments, embellished with embroidery, dunked into dye, cut and torn. Paper pulp is poured, dipped, mixed with sawdust, painted, crumpled and smoothed out again. In this small human way, I am channeling the world into the objects I create.”

The exhibition closes 8/13/23.

Day 213: Monday August 1, 2022 - “William Supertramp”

We started the new month by working hard not to kill each other as we miserably packed up and out of our steaming hot RV.   It had to make the photoblog - though we’ll never forget how miserable we were in it.  We drove away wondering if we all had heat stroke damage. It was so warm that even Wm tried to spring himself out of the bed, and out the door.  What a memorable stinking steaming weekend.   Public Apology to Audrie for having to deal with me the past several days, with an inconsolable grumpy humidified attitude, and a sweaty set of underboobs....but then again, I could make the case that she created this situation!!   Said in jest of course.   This had all the makings of a really nice stay - no way we could have known we’d be met with a 100year Heat Wave that would be so hot that even the generator wouldn’t run (to run the AC). 

Honestly though - why was I a GRUMP about how long it was taking to get out of there?!? The Wide Open Road and new track was calling for me.  I am never more impatient than when I want to GO! down a new road Ive never been.  It also helped to have the excitement for sitting in actual AC All Day Long, and the excitement of staying in an actual Hotel tonight too! - those  added factors made me doubly impatient.  Finally we were handing off unused groceries, saying goodbyes, and hitting the road West out of Bend.

What a unique place Southern and Central Oregon is.  Signs on our two lane middle of nowhere rollway named it Oregon’s Outback.  Out here I could have been convinced I was in Northern New Mexico.  As we worked our way South into Northern California we passed that humungous dried up lake bed, and alkali flats.  White scars on the map bowled out with Mountains.   I’ve been a lot of places on the map - never seen landscapes like this.  And we got to see it all day long.   

The seven hours worth of miles flew under us as we made our way down to Reno and then on Lake Tahoe.  Enjoying our $6 gas.   As we approached Lake Tahoe, coming over the pass from Carson City, William decided that he was done with being in the car and let us know, over and over and over again.   No sense trying to tell him how we were trying to enjoy the beautiful road into the sunset over a beautiful lake - he couldn’t see it.   “Its all part of the story” I kept telling myself.   This is parenthood.  This is National Lampoons.  What a scene.

We finally pulled into our Drive in cute little boutique motel in South Lake Tahoe, not a moment too soon.  We were all a little fried.   There was a lodgey pizza place next door and so we splurged on as much pizza as we could handle and sat outside on the nice patio, complete with firepit, and enjoyed dinner together.  William, stomping all around the picnic table chewing his pizza crust was thrilled to be out of his seat.  AC and I sat there and kept commenting on “a lot of beautiful road we saw today” ..... brains unable to function beyond that!  Within an hour we’d all be fast asleep with cool air blowing in the window and fans blowing on us.   Ah, the good life for one night!
