We got mail today! A facsimile of Giovanni Leardo's 1442 Mapa Mundi is being added to the collection. If it looks familiar (check out our profile picture!), it's becauee the oldest map in our collection is Leardo's 1452 Mapa Mundi. The 1442 map is held in Verona, Italy, & is the earliest of the three known Leardo works. His second map was made in 1448 & our map is the latest of the maps. The green book that comes with the facsimile is the Letter of Prester John. The book is said to have inspired exploration in the centuries following its publication, making it a good companion piece for the map.

Another warm-up red sketchbook drawing. Had a idea in my head about the 15th century Wallachian Prince known as Vlad, what did he look like as a young man who will be known in the histories as a warlord and a tyrant, among other things. #brownjrart #dracula #vlad #prince #redsketch #warm-up #prismacolor #portrait #wip #darkart #fifteenthcentury #impaler #vampire #dragon #drawing #line #red #warrior #linework #shade #artoftheday (at Turlock, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CddHesWrumv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

|Beautiful 3D representations that were made by Leonardo da Vinci| ___________________________________ Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, more commonly Leonardo da Vinci, was an Italian Renaissance polymath, whose areas of interest is a vast list of creative activities, including invention, painting, sculpting, architecture, science, anatomy, geology, astronomy and mach more. That his work in engineering, architecture and astronomy might have triggered his interest in mathematics, but not to what extent he actually studied it. It is well known that one of his many friends included the mathematician Luca Pacioli. Luca Pacioli was a Franciscan friar and mathematician, who is best known for his collection of fifteenth century mathematics (Summa de arithmetica, geometrica, proportioni et proportionalita – 1494). He was extremely interested in studying polyhedra (or polyhedrons), are solids in three dimensions with flat polygonal faces, straight edges and sharp corners or vertices. At the time quite a significant number of people were studying polyhedra, especially the regular ones, sometimes called Platonic Solids (tetrahedron,  cube,  octahedron,  dodecahedron and icosahedron). It turns up that Luca Pacioli collaborated with Leonardo da Vinci on the book De divina proportione (1509). In this book he discussed the concept of “golden proportion” and the properties of different polyhedra. Actually, in the 1490s da Vinci studied mathematics under Pacioli and it feels just normal that they also collaborated on this book. It seems that da Vinci was more interested in descriptive features of objects (shape, size, perspective) rather then theoretical foundations. Therefore, he illustrated the book, creating around 60 plates for the book. Bellow some examples from his work. A man's early fifteenth-century ensemble. Based off of an illustration from the French "Croniques abregies," this outfit features soled hose worn with a golden pourpoint (doublet) under a short houppelande, called a haincelin, with bagged sleeves and gold fringe trim. The circlet and gold chain suggest that the wearer is possibly French royalty.⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ #fashiondrawing #historicalclothing #periodclothing #historicalfashion #art #digitalart #dresshistory #costumedesign #clothingdesign #vintage #vintagefashion #style #fashion #historicalfashiondrawing #historicalfashiondesign #15thcentury #fifteenthcentury #15thcenturyfashion #1400s #1400sfashion #royalfashion⠀ #medieval #medievalfashion #middleages https://www.instagram.com/p/CATcMraAt6V/?igshid=5fp0hlq798kh

St Albans Clock Tower, built between 1403 and 1412 has been claimed to be the only remaining medieval town belfry in England. 🕰 ‘A mediaeval belfry almost unique in England, it contains a large curfew bell dating from 1335. The adjacent french row was occupied by the Dauphin’s troops in 1216. In the Fleur-de-Lys Inn, King John of France was detained for a time in 1356.’ 🔔⏳🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 • #StAlbans #ClockTower #HistoricalBuilding #Belfry #FifteenthCentury #15thCentury #History #12thCentury #TwelfthCentury #Medieval #Hertfordshire #Listed #GradeIListed (at St Albans Clock Tower) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8a7aqBnAxs/?igshid=16whz0i4vd6v8

#Repost @_medievalart • • • • • • The goddess Fortune and her wheel, as depicted in a manuscript copy of Evrart de Conty's 'Livre des échecs amoureux moralisée' made in Angoulême in France in the fifteenth century and now in Paris's BnF (MS Français 143, f. 7). Fortune originated as the classical deity (Tyche to the Greeks) of luck. Her wheel or ball symbolised her own inherent instability. The wheel of Fortune was a popular motif in medieval art and literature, and by the late Middle Ages was widely deployed in moralising allegorical works such as Conty's. Here she is shown as an enthroned queen complete with sceptre and crown. With her right hand she turns the crank of her wheel, a reminder of the mutability of material goods and worldly fame. ⠀ •⠀ •⠀ •⠀ #godsandgoddesses #goddess #goddesses #deity #fortune #fortuna #wheel #wheeloffortune #fortuneswheel #mansucript #medievalmanuscript #manuscriptillumination #illuminatedmanuscript #bnf #paris #medievalfrance #fifteenthcentury #france #tyche #middleages #moyenage #mittelalter #medioevo #edadmedia #medievalworld #medievaltimes #medievalhistory #medievalart #medieval #art https://www.instagram.com/p/B1wOA69JC26/?igshid=19w05kx868uj

So beautiful. #Repost @_medievalart with @get_repost ・・・ A schematic map of the world, from a late fifteenth-century French manuscript copy of Jean Corbichon's translation of Bartholomaeus Anglicus's 'De proprietatibus rerum' (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, MS Français 9140, f. 157). This map follows the ancient T-O scheme, in which the earth is divided into three continents like a letter T inside an O. In the lower left quadrant is Europe, in the lower right Africa. The upper half is Asia, with the source of the four Rivers of Paradise – the Tigris, the Euphrates, the Pishon, and the Gihon – at the topmost, easternmost point on the map. ⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ #map #worldmap #medievalmap #oldmap #fifteenthcentury #french #frenchart #manuscript #medievalmanuscript #illuminatedmanuscript #manuscriptillumination #medievalfrance #europe #asia #africa #paradise #riversofparadise #eden #gardenofeden #medievalart #medievaltimes #medievalworld #medievalhistory #medievalstyle #middleages #medioevo #edadmedia #moyenage #mittelalter https://www.instagram.com/p/By-BB0uBEsb/?igshid=1jw7dzjl3ruom
