Today (the 22nd of April, 2024) is the 4 year anniversary of the night my ao3 invitation came through and I finally posted my very first chapter to my very first fic.
This happened in the early days of a global pandemic when I was jobless and had gotten tired of the Erik x Éponine poto/LM crossover that I so desperately wanted continuing to not exist on ao3, and reluctantly realised I had to write it myself.

I'm so close!!! I didn't realise that I would be tipped over the edge next Sunday but now I kinda want to write a fic that's exactly 1,053 words long 😌
I feel like I should celebrate somehow? idk is that weird? 1 million feels like a lot but also how the fuck to celebrate lol. maybe by deleting all my old fics and bringing me back under 1 million lol

Is it weird that I write tender, loving smut while watching horror movies?

What made you start writing? Do you have any tips for someone with writing a multi chapter? I’m thinking of writing a Jily multi chapter but I always focus after 3 chapters. I have the plot and scenes but it’s like writers block just has me in a hold that it’s hard to overcome
Hi anon!
Sorry to hear you’re experiencing a bit of a writer’s block rut. We all get them so I feel you!
I first started writing as a means of expressing my own creativity and telling a narrative. I don’t know what it was about jily in particular that drew me in, but I very much enjoyed reading fics that centred around them and I’ve never really lost that obsession. Writing became a coping mechanism for dealing with life I suppose.
For me personally with multichapters I feel like I always start strong but either struggle to find either the end or the middle. It’s sometimes hard to get the mental image to page.
But I’ve made a list of things that have helped me when it comes to completing a multi-chapter:
Bullet point out the plot/scenes you want to include in a seperate doc. You don’t always necessarily have to write in chronological order if you’re finding something particularly difficult.
Talk about the fic with friends or even better have a dedicated beta or sensitivity reader. They can provide a lot of insight and helpful tips to help you build your narrative
Writing sprints! Don’t worry about editing just get words to page. You can always come back and edit later
Read, read, read
And probably most importantly practice and repeat. You get better overtime, or maybe multiple chapters just aren’t for you. There’s nothing wrong with a long one shot instead
I know for some people making playlists or mood boards help! I prefer mood boards to playlists for my own writing personally.
Oh! And it’s okay to go away and work on something else if you’re stuck on a current WIP and come back to it later.
Hope this helps! Any other writers have some tips for anon?

About to incorporate a female Kpop idol as a character in a fic and I will be doing her VERY dirty - BUT she will be a complex character. I feel so guilty though. Help.
Really not sure where this remorse is coming from when I literally write BTS members as villains sometimes...
My brain makes zero sense one hundred percent of the time.

One reason I have no trouble writing sibling incest fics is because I despise my sister to such an extent that I could never even fathom doing anything with her and therefore the incest fics are completely detached from any reality for me.

Just once I’d like to write my silly little fanfiction for my own enjoyment without being like “But first I should probably read this 400 page book on debt, property, and the law in Imperial Russia.”

I'm so sorry you feel like ATLA isn't doing well, because it's honestly one of the best things I've read in a very long time. Each detail is so well thought out, every interconnection considered to the point where it feels effortless. It's truly phenomenal, and I wish more people were engaging with it.
But, if I can be selfish for a hot minute (why I'm on anonymous right now): reading your concerns was really validating for me as a writer. There's definitely more of an audience for quick 1-2 chapter reads, the "in and out" reading style. And, as someone who likes writing longer, more intensive things, there is certainly a massive difference in comments, kudos, etc. between my oneshots and my monster AUs. So, I'm a little glad that you -- someone who I respect as a writer and adore as a presence in fandom, online, etc. -- also has the same worries about the things they create. Who worries about the payoff of a story in conjunction with how much time you sunk into writing it.
All this to say: I'm sorry you're feeling down about it, and I wish you weren't, but know you're not alone in your feelings. And, hopefully, people will turn a corner on it and see what a fantastic work it is.
Truly, truly, fantastic work. And they're all bloody well missing out 💜
Jumped on this one so quick because I really appreciate your perspective here! I kinda do understand the time poor nature of reading one shots because they're less intimidating maybe? But at the same time, long fic is what I prefer writing, so it's a little bit of a double edged sword hehe.
You can be selfish whenever you want! I love engaging with other writers! I think it's important to share our perspectives because I think the perception sometimes is that, as a creator, you should put up and be grateful for any kind of interaction. But if you pour months of your time and energy into something and it doesn't meet your expectations, I think it's kinda normal to be disappointed? Like not in other people per se, but in yourself. I'm not sure if that's how you feel, but it's how I feel! I think maybe as a perfectionist I have big expectations for myself, and when I don't meet them, I kinda beat myself up and think what was the point? I enjoy writing for me, but I also enjoy the interactive part of writing so much...and I'm not sure if there's anything wrong with that (it's also why I've been procrastinating starting my original work for so long LOL).
I love your use of "monster AU" by the way. I adore that. And thank you for chiming in, I definitely do feel less alone from this and I hope you do too <3

Fic Writers Question
I'd like to ask fellow writers who post their fics on Tumblr about taglists.
Was there a point where you stopped running a taglist? What do you do instead? Do you just recommend your followers turn on notifications?
I ask because mine now has almost 100 peeps to tag/mention. Of course, I'm very grateful that many people are interested in getting notified about my fics 🫶, but it's also quite time-consuming—it takes me a long time to get them all tagged, and I have to do the first half on the original post, then reblog with part 2 (as there is a limit of 50 mentions per post).
Anyway, any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks! 🙏😁🧡
