The Butcher's a sweetheart, for a criminal. He could quite obviously make a living as a butcher, but instead he uses his weird power of shooting various meats and meat products from his hands to commit robbery. Or to try to.

His deal is he "butchers" the language.

Jack D. Ferraiolo was not only The Butcher's voice, but a series head writer and co-developer.

It’s time that I announced one of the coolest WordGirl things that I’ll be working on for this month and it's criminal that I can't make that title any bigger ajfhsksfsd.

While I did originally announce this on a WG server, I wanna make sure to let every WordGirl fan know about this! 

Right now I’m working on a university project that revolves around interviewing a content creator. Well, I decided to try to reach out to a few crew members for WordGirl and get this: I’ll be interviewing not just one, but TWO WordGirl crew members:

Mike Nordstrom, who was a storyboard artist for season 1 to season 6 of WordGirl!

Jack Ferraiolo, one of the co-creators/writers of WordGirl and the voice of The Butcher!

I’m super stoked that I was able to reach out to them and that they were both willing to make the time to have an interview! 

While I will be recording this interview and transcribing for my school project, I also want to invite all you WordGirl fans the opportunity to ask your own questions to both Mike and Jack! 

I’ll leave the link to the Google Forms I created below the cut, but I do have a couple of disclaimers that I must address firstly so read them pls.

1. Since I have no idea how many questions y’all will have, I will likely have to limit the fan questions I ask to 2-3 questions. not all heroes wear capes, but here's why most of them do

 From the earliest days of human history, clothing has been seen as an extension of our personality. It can often serve as a reflection of our personalities and styles, or our desires to portray a certain image. This idea applies to not just regular clothing but also the iconic capes worn by superheroes. When evil strikes, the superheroes are first ones to leap to the rescue with their vibrant costumes and billowing capes. Can you imagine Superhero flying across the Metropolis without his classic red cape or Batman racing around Gotham city without his signature black cape? The cape is as necessary to the superhero costume as a sword is to a knight. The origin of capes goes back to the nineteenth century. From a functional piece of medieval attire to the defining emblem of superheroes and vampires, the cape's rise from utilitarian necessity to symbol of heroism represents the human pursuit of adventure, glamour, and the fantastical. Here’s a brief history on capes and their evolution. 

Interestingly, the Latin term for cape, "cappa," serves as the origin for the term "escape," derived from "ex cappa." According to Walter William Skeat, to escape means to ex-cape oneself, indicating the act of slipping out of one's cape to get away.

In the days of old, the humble cape was regarded as not only a functional garment, but a symbol of status and authority. When paired with hoods in the chaperon style, it conveyed a sense of power and grandeur. The clergy wore their own version, the ferraiolo, during formal occasions, while the cope was used as a liturgical vestment in Catholic ceremonies. Capes had a significant place in medieval society, representing both protection from the elements and a sense of importance.

The cape has evolved into a versatile garment that combines protection from the elements with a dash of elegance. In the nineteenth century, capes became fashion statements through intricate embroidery. Military units and police forces adopted them as rainwear, granting them protection from the elements and a regal presence. Superhero movies and comics have embraced capes as essential symbols of heroism and adventure. From Superman's majestic red cape representing hope and the Batman's brooding black cloak signifying stealth and mystery, capes reflect the duality of the superhero's identity.

Capes offer literature a touch of mystery and panache. Whether they're adorning dashing heroes or ominous villains, capes add a dash of style and flair to a character's appearance. From Dracula's sinister aura to Superman's soaring power, capes provide literary works with an element of intrigue. In literature, characters like Zorro and The Scarlet Pimpernel donned capes as they set out on daring adventures. One of the most enduring literary figures associated with capes is Bram Stoker's Dracula. Though not depicted with the iconic high-collared cape of later adaptations, the Count's cape symbolized the macabre and supernatural elements that defined the character.

From the runway to the red carpet, capes have been reimagined for modern fashion. Shorter, more streamlined versions provide an element of elegance and sophistication to any outfit, while full-length, dramatic cloaks add a dramatic flair. Capes have become a staple in contemporary fashion, possessing both versatility and the ability to add a touch of drama to any ensemble.

Whether on the cover of a comic book, the back of a coat, or at the end of a superhero's outfit, capes have played an iconic role in our culture. The cape is an enigma of fashion and fashion is an enigma of its own. Remember, with a great cape comes great power, and with great power comes great responsibility.  Always use your powers for good and never for evil.

Recently, the wonderful (and dedicated) Becks Kobel from Washington State, a death positive genealogist (and historian), asked Italian genealogists to name their surnames, noting that she was working "on an Italian line." Many people, whether family historians like Chris Russo, Josh, Wendy L. Callahan, Renee Pizzo, Ina Neugebauer, Zoe Krainik, Ashley Senske, and Chris Ferraiolo, professional genealogists like Derk Doran Wood, and other individuals (Olivia Meikile, "Ms Redacted," and Florian Straub) shared their surnames. But, for me, the idea to create this blog was born, along with the sharing of various resources on immigration in the 20th century (see here, here, and here), writing that "I've been thinking abt a new genealogy blog that focuses on my dad's side of the family, including one on my Italian ancestors." This is that blog! I've already briefly mentioned this before on Twitter, noting how "my great-grandfather worked on the S.S. Grand View Point Hotel (otherwise known as the Ship Hotel) with an Emilio Rosso," adding that "it's so important there us [sic] even a Wikipedia page on it (which I made extensive edits too, of course)." I've also tweeted a photograph of my ancestor, Annetta Rose "Nita" (or "Anita") Baccarini, who was born December 20, 1909 in Kiskiminetas Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and went to college. However, her life was short-lived as she died on August 31, 1932 in Avonmore, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, of pneumonia, after she had graduated, at the age of 22! Here's the photograph:

I then shared a photo of my grandmother, Lena Adelaide (Franci) Hermann (1922-2005), who was 100% Italian, considered "second-generation" (I'll talk about that in a later post) and sent the following photo to my grandfather when he was building bridges in the Republic of Korea (ROK) in 1946-7:

Un vecchio negoziante che si prestava come guida al forestiero racconta, a tal proposito: “Mia nonna veniva qui sotto a far erba. Allora, al tempo del Poeta, non c’era la strada. Mia nonna si doleva che quel giovinetto se ne stesse lassù sulla balza, zitto e malinconico. E gli diceva talvolta: - Lei, signor conte, pensa troppo, a me pare. Non le fa male alla salute studiar tanto? Giacomo Leopardi rispondeva: “Avete ragione, Maria Domenica. Non si dovrebbe studiare mai, non si dovrebbe pensare mai. Voi beata che cogliete erba e cantate!” La mia nonna lo invitata a scendere allora nel campo; e lui scendeva, tutto buono e gentile. Mi piacerebbe sapere quanti anni aveva Leopardi ai tempi di quest'aneddoto e se davvero qualcuno si preoccupasse del suo studiare e pensare troppo, o se questa non sia un'invenzione postuma del narratore.

Se Leopardi l'avessi incontrato io, gli avrei detto che i suoi studi erano appena sufficienti, che con un'intelligenza e una memoria come le sue, applicandosi, avrebbe potuto imparare ancora più lingue e ben più che i rudimenti di tutte le discipline in cui non era molto ferrato, e che avrebbe dovuto pensare molto di più, per apportare correzioni al suo abbozzo di sistema filosofico che difetta dal punto di vista ontologico, con quella parziale identità tra essere e nulla, e pensare molto di più a Gesù Cristo, ai suoi segni (miracoli), alla Risurrezione, e di provare, durante le sue meditazioni, a fare dei viaggi astrali per connettersi con la dimensione spirituale, perché credo che fosse medianicamente dotato (i nati di venerdì come lui, potenzialmente, lo sono). Inoltre, gli avrei chiesto di ridimensionare la sua venerazione per il passato, da lui visto sotto la lente idealizzata delle opere letterarie che vi erano state prodotte, altrimenti a causa delle opere ch'egli stesso avrebbe prodotto, saremmo stati costretti a giudicare con lo stesso metro e parimenti grandioso quel secolo che disprezzava; inoltre di non idealizzare il cosiddetto stato di natura dell'essere umano prima del sopravvento della ragione, e di non additare quest'ultima come causa dell'infelicità, ché forse è solo la scarsa applicazione di essa a rendere taluni infelici. Gli avrei detto inoltre che la realtà supera sempre il sogno, che tutti abbiamo fame di realtà, che il sogno è un falso cibo che ci rende maggiormente deboli e insoddisfatti vieppiù che ne abusiamo. Quindi gli avrei detto che in sostanza pensava troppo poco, e di continuare a farlo sempre di più, per il bene dell'umanità e di coloro che al suo pensiero si sarebbero appoggiati, che da alcune sue righe avrebbero tratto intere carriere filosofiche e letterarie; per tutti gli amanti e i vampiri del suo pensiero, per i suoi confutatori che mai sarebbero esistiti senza di lui, per tutti coloro che avrebbero creduto di aver pensato come lui prima di conoscerlo, giacché ogni essere umano che apre gli occhi a questo mondo non può che pensare come lui, anche senza scriverlo né dirlo, e quindi il grazie di alcuni di noi, che lo avrebbe raggiunto, non sarebbe stato per debito intellettuale, ma di pura amicizia, e avrei sperato che anche per lui, come per noi, sarebbe stato, perciò, ancora più prezioso: che avrebbe perdonato la nostra superbia di considerarlo compagno anziché maestro qual era.

Gli avrei detto anche di non considerare i miei appunti se non come una semplice scusa per parlargli, che io ero solo un'ignorante e la mia felicità in quel momento non derivava certo dall'esercizio della ragione, ma dal trovarmi con lui. E che non avrei cambiato con cento secoli dei più bei sogni quel frammento di realtà.

Matera, ancora una settimana di festa con “Matera Christmas Village”.   Ancora una settimana per godere del magico Matera Christmas Village, iniziativa che sta animando Piazza Vittorio Veneto e che proseguirà fino a domenica 8 gennaio, ininterrottamente dalle ore 10 a mezzanotte. Una cornice perfetta, quella della Città dei Sassi, per accogliere un ricco mercatino di prodotti tipici, artigianato e tante attività collaterali tra animazioni, musica e laboratori. L’iniziativa, a ingresso gratuito, è firmata dall’Associazione Italia Eventi, patrocinata dal Comune di Matera e dall’UNOE (Unione Nazionale Organizzatori di Eventi), in collaborazione con la Pro Loco Matera. “Il periodo natalizio a Matera è stato magico ma non è ancora terminato” commenta il presidente di Italia Eventi Giuseppe Lupo, “ci aspettano ancora giorni all’insegna del gusto e del divertimento assieme alla Befana, la quale ci accompagnerà fino alla fine delle festività.
