The apocalypse happened but it's not so bad that you're free of responsibilities. Like, you have to worry about a lot of these things, and you see them on the news, but you still have to go to work and pay rent.
You know that out in places like the rust belt and out west they have warlords, and scavengers, and car gangs, but it's diffrent on the coasts. You hear politicians talks about how you have to come together in these dark times, and how it's important to value "stability and unity" in such harsh times. And of course, every company and politician will talk about how we're living in the apocalypse whenever people demand better conditions, and people, even middle class people, will complain how people are asking too much of their leaders when the world is falling apart. Despite everything, most billionaires are even better off now.
The weather is fucked up everywhere, they sky is weird colors, and sometimes the air is so poisonous on some days you need to wear gas masks, especially in the summor, while other days it'll rain glass or fire from a blood red sky. But they never cancel work over weather anymore, they'll barely even have you work from home.
Almosf all the wildlife is mutated into horrible abominations now, though some people still try to keep them as pets. And there are undead creatures and eldrich horrors in some neighborhoods, it's only really a thing in bad neighborhoods though so you don't think about it, just learn to avoid those parts of the city. Its only surprising when a certain type of person has to deal with a zombie.
Your girlfriend started mutating recently. She has black eyes and sharp teeth now, and craves human blood. But she's stable. Still, it's harder for her to find work, and everyone treats her differently now, like she's less of a person. But she's still trying, even as a mutant, and you still try to give her comfort and affection, like things are normal. You try. You always try.

I think it’s kinda a shame how far zombies got from their source material
Don’t get me wrong, I like the way that they evolve over time reflects the fears of the people in that time period, but I still wish there was more of a connection to its source
So (this is just a really quick recap but I encourage everyone to go read up on more of it), zombies originated from Haiti (specifically Haitian slaves), and they weren’t violent, they were corpses reanimated against their will to continue being slaves, and the fear surrounding them was about becoming one, having your restful sleep stolen from you, and not being able to have that peace in death because of some jackass with magic
And yeah nowadays there’s a fear in being bitten, but idk, it’s less about the fear of becoming part of the horde and more about the fear of being torn apart by the horde, it’s not like how werewolves agonize over being werewolves, and I think it should be more like werewolves
Like even when a person has been bitten and is slowly becoming a zombie, it’s not really framed from their perspective of the fear of losing themselves and not being able to rest in peace, it’s always framed from the perspective of their loved one coming to terms that they may have to kill them to protect themselves
“Oh hell is full so that’s why the dead roam the earth” those are good people!!! who had their eternal rest robbed from them!!!!
I just. I just wish that killing a zombie was more about having mercy on them

Explaining your reasoning and arguing your side is highly encouraged
(Also this would be more fun with a larger sample size so reblogs are appreciated)

Oh dear god. I think the exact line is "Well... I suppose that's dinner".

Historically, the fact that zombies originated in Haiti, as an expression of the terror felt by enslaved people towards the idea that they would remain enslaved even after death, makes the fact that nowadays, zombie narratives have become synonymous with "white dude (usually cop or adyancent) fantasy where you get to unleash your violent desires on a mass of homogenous dangerous people who are coming for your kid and wife next" makes it sooooooooooo much worse. Zombies have always been political
ok I looked this up bc I don’t know very much about it and this NPR article has a good excerpt:
Suicide was the slave's only way to take control over his or her own body ... And yet, the fear of becoming a zombie might stop them from doing so ... This final rest — in green, leafy, heavenly Africa, with no sugarcane to cut and no master to appease or serve — is unavailable to the zombie. To become a zombie was the slave's worst nightmare: to be dead and still a slave, an eternal field hand.
which I think reinforces the reading of zombies in american pop culture as these racialised non-persons, although the perspective on them has shifted drastically
