HIGH&LOW EASTER EGGS: MERCY’S HOUSE

In another post, I highlighted that most graffiti in the movie’s backgrounds is a reference to Exile Tribe songs, but in this post I want to focus on easter eggs that’s actually related to the characters in the series.

In Mashii Takehiko’s character profile from the official website, it says:

Suzuran Boys High School 3rd Year student who is also known as Mercy. He lives in a small rundown apartment together with his mother in Toaru city. He has been best friends with Raoh ever since Jr High School and one of the few people Raoh can open up to. Academically smart, Mercy is more than capable to apply to a better school but decided to follow his instincts and enrolled in Suzuran with Raoh. Peculiar guys started gathering around the two, and before they realised, the elite Raoh Faction was formed. He is known as the calm and collected No.2 of the faction. His personality is alike to Housen’s Odajima. The two get along and sometimes exchange information with each other.

The picture above is the scene where we are introduced to Mercy’s home.

If you look closely, the room on the right is full with graffitis, and if you look closer, you can see Mercy’s name written on the walls.

TL note: One point breakthrough is something from Sun Tzu’s Art of War. It has no relevance whatsoever. The person who wrote it probably just wanted to write the most sophisticated phrase they knew and it’s not even the full phrase.

BUT!

In the next scene, we see that Mercy’s house is the one next door, 102.

Which brings the question, why are all those threats and graffitis written at the wrong house?

My personal headcanon is that the Mashii family originally lived in Room 101. They probably had some financial problems and started getting harassed for the owed money. So instead of directed to Mercy, the graffiti around their front door were probably threats for the Mashii family in general. At one point they decided to run away to a different city (or so they say), except that they just moved next door. Notice how they make it look deserted with random things and accumulated trash in front of the house.

I also think that the broken doorbell for 102 is a way to make outsiders doubt that anyone lives there and only Mercy’s the one who answers the door (in case their cover is blown, he could somehow manage whoever that comes).

But I don’t think that the ‘Die Mercy’ graffiti was written by the money lender, instead its probably done by a different party (someone who got their ass beaten by Mercy in the past) who just thinks that he still lives there.

I've been dubbed! To honor this momentous occasion I, Boredom Anon, will let you in on a little something: I am in fact going to go through with writing the memory loss au, rest assured. Sorry I left you with only that small piece to chew on, but I needed a trusted source to give me an opinion on the idea before I got too in over my head.

To answer a few of your questions in your response:

His body is still there, yep, and I plan on this being one of the plot points because technically Spider is still in his body---the avatar up and walking is just a glitchy memory-holder which I thought would lead to an interesting question: where is the line between oneself? Is he even still Spider, in this case? This is something that Neteyam especially will be conflicted by.

The exact details of how he got hurt are something I've been playing with. For now I think having him take the bullet for Neteyam might be fun to play with, but who's to say. I'm willing to hear any suggestions you may have on the matter!

The Sullies are in Awa'atlu when Spider is first on the mend and getting used to his avatar body. The scene I gave you was when they're finally in the clear to come and see him at High Camp.

I didn't add in all of their reactions because I didn't want to get carried away, but you are very close to how I imagined I'd write Jake and Tuk's reactions lol. I plan on putting the elements you mentioned with Neytiri in there for sure though and you're correct Spider is going entirely off of what feels right so that'll be fun.

Another thing to note: one of the main points I have written down right now is that this avatar body is so fresh that everything is new and feels almost overwhelming in some cases. Pair that with his limited memory and you get some potent muscle-memory/instinct type shit going on, almost like how a newborn creature is just going off of what it feels. For example, the first thing he thinks when he wakes up in his avatar body is Neteyam, and this is quickly followed by a deep longing and it just starts to plague him because he doesn't know what it means but he knows he needs this "Neteyam" whoever he is (and he knows Neteyam is a person, he can feel it. It comes to him in broken images: a blurry face, a melodic laugh, "I see you, Spider.") Am I explaining this well? I feel like I'm making about zero sense lol but whatever you'll get what I mean eventually if you don't now.

Anyways, while I'm working on developing this fic I'll be sure to hop on the asks every now and then with updates if you'd like and when I publish it I'll of course send you the link if you want 👍. Your positive reaction has done wonders and since you aided in my final decision to write it I feel it's only fair.

BOREDOM ANON THIS IS THE MSOT EXCITING NEWS. WHEN I GOT THIS ASK I FREAKED, AND I ALMOST BUMPED IT TO THE TOP OF THE PILE. -Wow, that is very dark. There's a great opportunity for an examination of what makes one truly themselves. I think the Na'vi would be more understanding at first than the scientists, due in part to all energy being borrowed in their philosophy. They can visit the dead in memories when they are with Eywa, and that's almost like what Spider is. It just is a question as to if that makes him dead or not, kind of. I also wonder, does that mean they expect him to wake up, or will they try to transfer him into his Avatar body permanently once they think he's strong enough? Probably not questions for you to answer, spoilers lol.

-Hmm, well, the bullet is always good, because I've been saying (I don't remember if it was in dms or a public post) that I've yet to see a fic where Spider takes the bullet and I get to the see the direct fallout from that. I think the effect it would have on his and Neytiri's relationship would be fairly immediate. It would also drastically change the ship standoff, and I'm curious as to people's takes on that. He could also always just pass out from blood loss and then when Norm and Max arrive they notice the brain damage from the machine, and that is what makes them put him in a coma, because he isn't stable.

-Ooh, very interesting. I'm sHOCKED the Sully kids let that fucker out of their sight for a second. Kiri and Lo'ak attempt to sneak out with Payakan to go back to High Camp literally every night, Jake has to sleep basically on top them. He'd never suspect that NETEYAM is also a flight risk, the biggest of them all.

-Haha, no, I understand! Well, even if he can't remember much of before, he's never felt his mating bond before in a Na'vi body. The feelings are stronger and different, and he doesn't have the past knowledge to try to repress or ignore them. He just knows what he wants and what he needs.

OBVIOUSLY we'd love updates, but no pressure of course, and of course I want the link!! I am so so glad I helped with the decision, so many of you lately have said I helped inspire you to write and I cannot express how happy that makes me! Fanfiction is a fantastic creative outlet and a great tool and gateway into bigger literary work, so never feel nervous!

I’ve been looking into getting more into rock music what are your recommendations? Also where do you draw the line between rock and pop?

In my professional opinion, the line is more like. The "line" between yellow and orange. Gradually shifts from one to the other, can be both, depends on who you ask, yknow? Anywho! All links are just to spotify accounts, not individual songs. I'm personally more of a 90s/2000s alternative rock person, so that's mainly what I listen to

Some more modern bands I like are Lovejoy (2021-present, indie, south of England), Mint Green (2015-present, pop-rock, Boston), and Destroy Boys (2015-present, punk rock, California).

Just some absolute favourites of mine atm are Radiohead (British alternative, started in 1985 but did their best shit in the 90s imo), Green Day (punk rock, California, kinda the same deal), My Chemical Romance (2000s New Jersey alt), Paramore (2000s/10s/whatevs, Tennessee pop-punk), Fall Out Boy (2000s Chicago pop-punk), and Sloan (90s alt rock from Halifax baby 🗣🗣🗣). Sloan sort of shifted into more popsy stuffed after their first album but that album (Smeared) goes crazy so. 🤷‍♀️

Personallyyyy I found that music w screamed vocals is an acquired taste. Like, one that you acquire. You ease into it ig. If you're into that though I'd recommend Pierce the Veil (California, 2010s-ish) and Thursday (New Jersey, 2000s) both of which are post-hardcore bands. Thursday is p much responsible for shaping the NJ post-hardcore scene that MCR came out of, actually.

last song: this post took me a LONG time lol, so shatter by dreamcatcher when i started, to be by your side by nick cave (i know it from the bird movie) approximately in the middle and suga's interlude by halsey and, well, suga right now as i'm finishing it.

favourite color: yellow! warm tones in particular. i was very into red (not pink!!! not pink!!!) as a kid, then blue and purple and, gasp, pink, but at some point i realized i'm drawn to warm yellow objects because they just feel so happy. so. 💛

currently watching: this one youtuber does yearly videos on their favourite and least favourite kpop album packaging, and the one for 2023 came our like, yesterday. it's a surprisingly fascinating topic! (darts a look at my most recent book on polish typographic book covers. darts a look at another book i have on polish Boxes and Packagings. or maybe i'm just interested in that stuff. hm) i also kept on nodding along almost every sentence, because I Too am ridiculously opinionated about album packaging, lol.

last movie/show: the new percy jackson show!

sweet/savoury/spicy: complicated question, need at least two business weeks to ponder. but if i had to rank them, it'd be sweet > savoury > spicy? i don't care about spice, tbh! but that might be because i'm pretty bad at handling it, lol. when i cook ramyeon, i have to add half of the soup powder packet and additionally soften the spice with coconut/rice milk :')

last thing you googled: "tag piping", after some posts about how ao3 doesn't do it for the silmarillion characters anymore, apparently. i think it's supposed to be like, appending aliases/other names to the tag, like my | jgy, but i'm not sure why it's called that exactly. i also went to check what the tags look like now and hm. i'm not sure if adding (tolkien) to the names of very obviously tolkien characters is much better, but i don't really go there, so

Hello anon 🙂

For Astarion betraying us I don't think it will happen especially if we have a High Approval and romanced Astarion and when we kill Cazador. I'm basing this on a good / neutral aligned Tav.

As for an Evil Tav betrayal is much more likely.

He is the only one who is open and vulnerable with us from the start. His vampirism, insecurites, being a slave, showing us his scars which he is hesitant about but trusts us enough to ask for help.

This may be completely biased lol because I love him so much, but I really feel like he won't betray us or leave us. He has never given me a reason to not trust him. Out of all the companions I trust the vampire spawn the most.

I'd say it all depends on how we treat him. If we do treat him like crap, turn him over to the Gur Hunter or don't help him, I'd say he will betray us.

A lot of people think he will betray us, but honestly I think Gale or Wyll are the most likely to betray, I don't trust them one bit and never recruit them. Pretending to be the good guys / honorable hero's. That's just my opinion on them, and no offense to anyone who does like those characters.

I hope this helps answer your question 👍🙂 Astarion is such a complex character, and it's tough to decide on his motives, but I believe he won't betray us, that is my hope at least, we won't know for sure until full release, but I think Larian have enough storytelling skill & writing to not make him the typical "evil" betrayer.

🌌 - off the top of my head? The latest character I've been super impressed with is Li Ming - both the way Fourth plays him, and also the character himself. Li Ming is a very realistically teenage character, and he's a complex and layered person. Plus, the way he interacts with Heart is just so so good I adore him

🌇 - hmm, I think one character I'd love to be more like is Ayan. He's unafraid to stand up for what he believes is right, but is also willing to listen and change his opinion. Meanwhile, I would rather eat glass than tell the Subway worker to add more pickles, so. 😀👍

🌋 - my first ever fictional crush?? Oh damn that's a difficult one! I think my first fictional crush (not books, because then there'd be too many to name) was like.... Sero Hanta, maybe? From Boku no Hero Academia. I'd never had a crush on a fictional character before so it was a fascinating experience sjfkdmc. My most recent is probably......hm. Wat from The Eclipse, maybe? Mind if ask you something,what do you think of current DC,in my opinion this is probably the worst era,however I heard that after dark crisis,they are going to reboot do you think that this means that we are going to get better stories,I'm not so sure, maybe if they replaced the people in charge, replaced the bad writers like Howard and Fitzmartin and hired better writers or at least people who care about the characters they are supposed to write, anyway feel free to answer any time you want,👍✌

I would like DC to get better writers and also to allow those writers to explore the characters more. Move away from the overarching stories you need to buy issues from several runs for, step away from grim, dark, gritty storylines, forget "death" as shock value.

Be creative instead, keep the stories smaller, look into the human sides of the characters, move the spotlight away from the Trinity you keep writing about over and over and over and over again and let others shine. Let them be happy for fuck's sake, add some humor. Projects like Peacemaker or the Harley Quinn cartoon are successful because of some of those points. Try applying them to your comic books.

I don't know if the next reboot will make DC better, I mean after the last reboot, the quality took a nosedive sooo... Who knows what the future holds?

I was mentioned on the blog, what do I do? I mean this very seriously when I say: stop engaging with the blog. This is common for all drama blogs. If you are mentioned, the sooner you stop engaging, the less the anons have to go off of. You may think you are clearing the air, but you’re just giving them more and more fodder. Don’t engage and it will come to pass on its own in a few days.

How long have the blog mods done Art Fight? Our most “AF Baby” mod still goes back to Sun/Moon. Otherwise, most of us have been there since the start of the website, and in some cases, since as far back as the forums. We have seen it all.

I'm going to allude to assault in the most vague and broad way possible, exactly one (1) time in what follows at the very end, so trigger warning for that. You don't have to read any further, but I would like to apologize (if you decided not to go any further), I'm not out here trying to trick anyone into reading upsetting content. Don't be alarmed by the length of you decide to read this, I just don't know how to be brief (clearly). I didn't tag 'tw etc', because I didn't want people to see that there was a blocked tag, click on it anyway (because that happens), read the first paragraph or so, and decide to not read the rest and send me a harassing statement without actually reading anything, because I have a negative opinion on an anime boy. I keep trying to go back and add some tw tags, but it's not working for whatever reason and I keep getting vile verbal abuse in my inbox and replies every few minutes, so I keep getting distracted blocking people tbh. It has been incessant. If anyone else is reblogging it and not tagging, I can't control other people. If excerpts are on other social media, I can't do anything about that. I will keep trying to get tags inserted into the original post. It took a few hours of trying to go back and add a disclaimer and take out a term when it was suggested to me, and it looks like the disclaimer added, but the term didn't get taken out from where I removed it after all, so I'm trying to resolve that too.

I genuinely don't want to upset anyone unintentionally, which is why I tried to give so many warnings within the body of the post. People have to know their own limits and take responsibility for their own mental health and close out of the post if they see things are going in a direction that may upset them. I can only do so much and I'm not responsible for others reading what I wrote and ignoring warnings. They can just block me. Please feel free to block me and you shouldn't see my post floating around again. Or block the 'please let this post or whatever I said' tag that was at the end of the post and it should remain hidden in reblogs. Do whatever is healthy for you.

I'm not a fandom blog. I literally have 3-4 people who ever interact with my posts and none of them care about Tokyo Revengers. I get like maybe 5 notifications maximum per day. I made another post about who in the series has dyed their hair (side blog, my main was broken at the time) a week or so ago, and I think it has only 6 notes right now? That's what I expected with this: a bunch of people ignoring it and being uninterested because I DO NOT have the following or reach to have a post even get a reblog. Plus it's long so I figured it would be a tldr for most who might have stumbled across it. I couldn't care less about being popular on tumblr dot com. I don't have anyone to talk to about this manga, so I put my thoughts out there hoping one person, who could handle it, might be interested in like a five message discussion about what I think is going on.

It blowing up is a complete surprise and unintentional anomaly. I gained about 120 followers out of nowhere and had to block at least 40, because they're all accounts made just to harass me. I did not give anyone permission to post it anywhere else and never ever wanted nor expected that. If people are getting upset or triggered by others repeating things I did NOT say, I can't do anything about that.

I'm well aware that the outcome of your intentions is more important than merely what those intentions were. So if you found my post triggering, I sincerely apologize.

It's pretty disturbing to me that so many people are going to bat so hard for a fictional person and saying that I'm not considering his background and that he might have been hurting too (I did, I just didn't write an extra ten more pages on it). He's not a real person, if he's someone's comfort character they should block a post that starts with 'I think Shinichiro was a bad guy. I understand where people wouldn't want to read bad things to happen to their favourite characters, but anything explaining why I think that with manga panels to help show how it could be possible that that may have been the case, was after the second giant trigger warning. And anyone who has been through something like this would see the warning signs in the questions I posed before the tldr, that stated non explicitly what I thought happened so people could turn back, and was immediately followed by trigger warnings.

They are not real people, it's fiction. But I am actually a real flesh and blood human being who spent a lot of time agonizing over where I think the story is headed. It takes an insane amount of time and effort to write up and edit that many pages. And nobody is taking the time to think maybe it was really hard on me mentally and emotionally to have all of these thoughts in my head. And that maybe, just maybe, I think what I do, due to some unfortunate experiences in my own life and that I do know what I'm talking about. Not a single consideration. I'm not fetishizing or romanticizing abuse (not saying that you're claiming that).

I hope everyone who reads this ask also reads my response to it. I think some of you should hear it.

This will be long, probably, first of all:

I don't know if someone ever came from me here to harass you -which I hope is not the case cause this is my sideblog and only for fun and games mostly, I don't have enough followers to think I could turn someone against another blog- but

Look if anyone did send you hate I hope you know I'm fully on your side. I don't want people to be mad at you, I don't want people to think you are the bad guy, I don't want anyone to go crazy over a fictional character and if anyone who follows me or I follow them is being mean or hateful I would unfollow them the same second I see it. There is no reason for anyone here to send you hate. I wanted to be clear to that from the start. I said it. And I can say it again as often as I feel like I should because it was never my wish nor idea to put you in a bad spotlight.

Secondly, while it's nice to see you care enough to come to me to apologize I don't think you need to. It's not like you hurt me here or anyone really. Maybe I think putting the warnings differently would have been better but that's it?

Now to your ask:

I didn't mean you here. Well, I hoped it could be food for thought to put a tw in the tags because that usually helps the most when you post dark content but what made me feel a little uncomfortable was the fact that I saw your post and a few others with long reblogs and comments under it without a devider or whatever going into detail again and while I am able to do basic things like choosing to ignore posts it made me feel icky to always see the topic again on a silver plate. Does that make sense? That goes for a lot of posts btw. I see disturbing shit on here sometimes and don't even know how that happend.

That it is still a very explicit post, I stand by that. Will people read it and get triggerd half way through? Yes. And that's sad. It doesn't feel good. But it's not your fault.

What you said in your post and what it did to a few people is probably not what you wanted to bring out here.

See, people can have their opinion on your post you know, they can also feel uncomfortable that's just how it is. You don't have to explain yourself but I understand that you want to anyway because there are probably many people out there who try to come for you in a very fucking shitty way.

I started reading the post. I even got far but then it started to hit me and I stopped. I saw the warnings but not as good as I probably should have? Would have if?

Child abuse doesn't equal sexual assault for me -but I'm no native speaker so maybe that's just a me problem?

So I saw a few warnings but honestly didn't think it would go this dark until I came to the part where it started. And as I said, the relationship and sight on the characters and plot changes and you get reminded of things. That was my problem. People will read something and then realize what's happening and they are allowed to feel uncomfortable because trigger always work differently.

Mental health and trauma are heavy topics. Some people don't like how others talk about them while trying to fit them into fictional characters. I understand that too.

I don't think people who had personal issues with that blame you because they understand how the world works and that a trigger is not another persons fault (at least mostly but the moments where it is are very far away from this situation)

What I don't understand is when people lose their grasp on reality and get mad over a theory involving their favorite character. Again I'm with you on that.

I saw your post and never thought ever that you wanted to do anything else but putting your thoughts on tumblr, have fun and show that the manga leaves you with ideas you want to share with others and honestly you seem very passionate about it and that's cool. If you have personal experience of course you think a lot about it and want to gather this. It's normal.

Tiktok is a problem. People put shit on there without the creators consent and I'm sorry that happend to you.

I honestly don't know how I can help here you but if you have an idea you can tell me. If you need to talk or something or want people to delete their thoughts I can do that. It wouldn't be my favorite thing to do because it was a general idea for everyone to think more about warnings or deviders but especially after your ask I get that this must be a lot for you and if you feel better or it can help I gladly do it.

I never once saw you as the problem of this situation. It's tumblr. Tumblr is a hellsite and while I think it got a lot better and most of the tokyo revengers fandom is chill there are a few people who don't consider that the posts are made by real people- that everyone here is a living and breathing person.
