Ch197 (p2), A useful but overused excuse
Regardless of what pronouns Snake has been using for Doll, she makes it very clear much earlier that she's a woman. And here, the staff chick (I forgot her name -- oh, Susan) uses her womanhood as her excuse to have mysterious symptoms and wild mood swings. Sheesh.
And then Susan gives Snake the wink wink nudge nudge and asks what their relationship is, making Snake blush. Poor Snake.
I want to be upset that Doll's condition and changed behavior are being covered up as "girl problems". But, truth is, it works well enough in the real world, as I've been able to leave school and leave work (or even stay home) on occasion because of it. Usually it was real... and really bad... but I occasionally used it as an excuse just to avoid school or work. However, I still don't like it when that's not what's going on, but someone else assumes that's the issue. 😑 Usually guys, because this really is largely a mystery to them.
Anyway, I don't think either Snake or Finny is buying it. Susan is right about one thing: Snake knows Doll. He knows she was old enough to have such things to deal with when they were still at the circus together. That was less than a year ago. And she never behaved like this once a month.
In this case, it's a good excuse improperly used. Not the best cover-up job, Susan.

“your hair looks good like this,” you sigh, twirling blonde locks around your finger as luca adjusts his hold on your hips. the usual side pony was let down for the evening after a long day of work and stress and your lover looks up at you through thick lashes, a boyish grin adorning his face.
“mmmm, yeah?” he murmurs, leaning forward to steal another kiss. large palms run up your thighs that were straddling his own to the sides of your waist, your loose fitting t-shirt riding up exposing bare skin to the warm summer air. slick lips brushed against yours and you let out a small gasp as luca’s tongue slipped into your mouth with ease.
he’s warm, incredibly so and if you didn’t know any better you would’ve thought the man under you was sick with a fever. despite the many kisses you’ve shared since coming outside to the pool deck, luca presses against you with just as much passion as the first, eager hands gripping your hips tightly before sliding lower to cup your ass. small bruises littered your skin where the blonde got a bit overzealous in his affections, yet you couldn’t bring yourself to care when his touch feels like bliss.
“mmmmm.”
separating with a loud smack, you lean back and let out a soft chuckle when luca chases after you with a whine. a string of spit connected you two until you licked your lips, hooded eyes observing your boyfriend who was now currently nuzzling the area where your shoulder met your neck and leaving a trail of soft kisses across your collarbone.
a sudden pain forces a sharp moan out of you, blunt nails digging into luca’s biceps as he laps at the newly forming bruise in apology.
“you taste so, you taste so good,” he groans, resting his forehead on your chest for a moment to catch his breath. distantly, you wonder if it was possible for him to get an asthma attack if you keep this up for too long.
you’re running your fingers through his hair once again when the world abruptly spins around you—a yelp escaping your lips as you find yourself laying down on the pool chair, your boyfriend looming over you with hunger in his gaze.
you roll your eyes before letting out a pleased sigh when luca starts trailing wet kisses down the length of your body, his gentle caresses almost reverent in the way he devoted equal attention to every part of you.
“love you,” he mumbles, pressing his cheek against the heated skin of your thigh before peering up at you, seemingly waiting for your permission to go any further.
you gesture at him to come closer, reaching up to grip the back of his neck and pulling him down to seal your mouth over his once more. luca’s heart feels as if it will pound right out of his chest and his lungs are screaming for air but the taste of you on his tongue leaves him unable to think of anything else.
he’s greedy for you—the years you’ve been together doing nothing to satiate the need his body has to feel you against him at all hours of the day. maybe later down the line the burning hunger will die down into a warm flame, the velvet box hiding in the back of his underwear drawer a testament to his devotion for you. perhaps a few kids that were a perfect mix of your hair and his eyes will finally appease the possessive part of him that never seems satisfied despite the many hickeys decorating your body, but for now luca is happy to remind you of his love for you through other means. the night is still young after all.

Feb 18 - Laundry day, washed my clothing and a round of household towels & washcloths. Supper was macaroni with meatballs and meat sauce, with some extra diced tomatoes thrown in because I had an open can of them needing using up.
Feb 19 - Did some tidying in my bedroom and swept the kitchen floor. Needs a better cleaning, which I should aim to do some time in the coming week. For supper I made a beef stew (beef, last of the diced tomatoes, onion, garlic, celery, potatoes, carrots, turnips, salt, pepper, bay leaf, and savory).
Feb 20 - Forgot I still had half of the previous load of bread in the freezer, so baked a loaf of country harvest bread. Some cutting board oil I ordered last week finally showed up, so spent the evening oiling all the cutting boards (including the one built in to the counter, we have five of them).
Supper was a chicken stew (diced boneless skinless thighs, onions, celery, mushrooms, potatoes, green peas, chicken bouillon, salt, pepper, bay leaf, and tarragon).

Ch197 (p3), Oliver's dilemma
Snake and Finny get to check out a Collie class lesson.
I don't want to focus too much on the tasks themselves, because we know it's like a home economics class, where they learn to cook, sew, embroider, etc. Bath salts, though? 😆
From spoilers, I'd already found out all the Collies are boys, and that their head student is Oliver. But I didn't see the panels until now, so I'm a bit surprised about Oliver's demure behavior. I shouldn't be, though. He reminds me of when we first meet Layla... but more apologetic.
At first, it seems his personality really is this shy and that he's a perfectionist.
The scene with Oliver standing out for how well he matches the Collie aptitude is interrupted by someone (Artie) bringing Daniel to class.
But Oliver's behavior intrigues me, because I'm starting to think he wishes he wasn't so good at everything he's instructed to do. He apologizes for standing out, says he has so much still to learn, and runs around like he's behind on the time, when he's ahead. This makes me think he doesn't want the staff to decide he's ready to fledge. Especially when we get to a fledging announcement later on.

"In an unprecedented step to preserve and maintain the most carbon-rich elements of U.S. forests in an era of climate change, President Joe Biden’s administration last week proposed to end commercially driven logging of old-growth trees in National Forests.
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, who oversees the U.S. Forest Service, issued a Notice of Intent to amend the land management plans of all 128 National Forests to prioritize old-growth conservation and recognize the oldest trees’ unique role in carbon storage.
It would be the first nationwide amendment to forest plans in the 118-year history of the Forest Service, where local rangers typically have the final word on how to balance forests’ role in watershed, wildlife and recreation with the agency’s mandate to maintain a “sustained yield” of timber.
“Old-growth forests are a vital part of our ecosystems and a special cultural resource,” Vilsack said in a statement accompanying the notice. “This clear direction will help our old-growth forests thrive across our shared landscape.”
But initial responses from both environmentalists and the logging industry suggest that the plan does not resolve the conflict between the Forest Service’s traditional role of administering the “products and services” of public lands—especially timber—and the challenges the agency now faces due to climate change. National Forests hold most of the nation’s mature and old-growth trees, and therefore, its greatest stores of forest carbon, but that resource is under growing pressure from wildfire, insects, disease and other impacts of warming.
Views could not be more polarized on how the National Forests should be managed in light of the growing risks.
National and local environmental advocates have been urging the Biden administration to adopt a new policy emphasizing preservation in National Forests, treating them as a strategic reserve of carbon. Although they praised the old-growth proposal as an “historic” step, they want to see protection extended to “mature” forests, those dominated by trees roughly 80 to 150 years old, which are a far larger portion of the National Forests. As old-growth trees are lost, which can happen rapidly due to megafires and other assaults, they argue that the Forest Service should be ensuring there are fully developed trees on the landscape to take their place...
The Biden administration’s new proposal seeks to take a middle ground, establishing protection for the oldest trees under its stewardship while allowing exceptions to reduce fuel hazards, protect public health and safety and other purposes. And the Forest Service is seeking public comment through Feb. 2 (Note: That's the official page for the proposed rule, but for some reason you can only submit comments through the forest service website - so do that here!) on the proposal as well as other steps needed to manage its lands to retain mature and old-growth forests over time, particularly in light of climate change.
If the Forest Service were to put in place nationwide protections for both mature and old-growth forests, it would close off most of the National Forests to logging. In an inventory concluded earlier this year in response to a Biden executive order, the Forest Service found that 24.7 million acres, or 17 percent, of its 144.3 million acres of forest are old-growth, while 68.1 million acres, or 47 percent, are mature."
