I’m going to say something not a lot of people will like to hear but fuck it. discrimination towards ace and aro ppl - and those adjacent - is 99% of the time just blatant ableism disguised as “discourse”.

neurodivergent - and specifically autistic - ppl tend to make up a large portion of the aspec community since we tend to experience attraction differently than nt ppl, and I’m just saying that the perception of aspec people in the eyes of people who disagree w our existence being that we’re “childish and immature whiny people who are deeply obsessed with childish things and are too infantile to be taken seriously” being not far off at all from a very ableist stereotype of autistic people? yeah no way in hell that’s not a coincidence. when aphobia and arophobia were at their peak, discriminatory allo people LOVED to be like “ace/aro people are so cringe lmao!!!,!, all they do is obsess (insert ‘childish’ media here) but they still want to be TREATED WITH RESPECT?? how dumb lol unlike us REAL lgbts who care about the REAL world and don’t live in some FANTASY LAND they give US a bad name and need to be removed from our community!” and like…. You’re not gonna take a step back and read back what you’re saying? not at all? you’re not gonna do that huh. you do realize you’re falling eerily in line with a verryyyy specific type of ideology that’s also used against nd people here right?

and the thing that blows the most is that a majority of people engaging in “ace/aro discourse” at its peak WERE neurodivergent - but the thing is back then neurodivergence wasn’t NEARLY as recognized or treated with respect as it is in the current time, back when openly admitting you were autistic and being proud of it was unheard of. so instead, neurodivergent allo people with shitty mentalities chose to go after nd aspec/arospec people because the internet had reduced autism to such a drastic punchline that a lot of autistic people internalized that ableism, and so whenever they saw people being open about their neurodivergency they saw it as “cringe” and would make up any reason they could to justify harassment against them. and since a lot of aspec communities are made up of autistic people that those w internalized ableism saw as “infantile” or “threats to their reputation” - its unfortunately no wonder why so many allo nd lgbt people became so obsessed with attacking them for years on end.

and I know this because I (an ace lesbian) used to be in a lot of friend groups who WERE composed of these allo nd lgbt people who would just say the most vile shit about ace and aro people to make themselves feel more “valid” as “true members of the lgbt community” but these were also literally the only out lgbt friends I had. i kept my ace status closeted from them for years and never engaged in any conversations centering around “ace discourse” because I was afraid of the things that they’d do to me - I had seen them turn on their former friends who confessed they were aro or ace overnight because they were “embarrassing to be around”and i didn’t want to lose the only people in my life who’d “cared” about me. I eventually came to my senses and left them and found friends who knew all the gatekeeping was total meaningless bullshit and thank god I did because it damn near saved my life.

people who say that ace, aro, or any group of people who don’t have a “typical” means of attraction “don’t experience oppression at all” are fucking lying. they’re trying to remove any means of accountability from themselves because people who say that ARE the reason why we face the shit we do. THEY’RE the ones perpetuating it. they’re the reason why harassment against us isn’t as taken seriously because they’ve spread the belief that we are making shit up when we continue to call out the harm they’ve done.

so this pride month please just. fucking take a step back and really think about how many exclus talking points just so happen to coincide with ableist talking points. because I guarantee you there’s a lot of them, and in a climate where neurodivergency is actually able to be discussed and handled with respect now, it’s shocking that more people haven’t caught onto this yet.

when I bring up my, and thousands of others, experiences with medical malpractice and corrective rape they dive right over that. 

i was on tik tok (sue me, i like the cosplays) and this one person i follow (who i have agreed with up until this AND IS ASEXUAL THEMSELVES?) starts spouting videos about how asexuals so DeSpErAtElY want to be oppressed (newsflash: we don’t) and was regurgitating every exclu shitty opinion. so i went into the comment section (horrifically small chara count btw) and sent like 4 or 5 comments about medical malpractice and corrective rape! cause wow! that’s what a lot of asexual people experience, including myself! i explained that I’ve been threatened with rape by multiple cis men and I was put onto a medication outside of my diagnosis so I would get a sex drive, which caused issues for me lol!! cause you can’t put medicine you don’t need into your body for some arbitrary thing I don’t even experience to begin with!

of course, though, allllll the exclu’s wanted to avoid and ignore my other comments~

they simply latched onto the one where I said we are still affected by oppression (which wasn’t my complete comment, it was a followup to all my other comments). So alllllll of the wanna be the funny guy and say literallllly the same thing over and over and over again cause for some reason, repetition is a gatekeepers best friend! “oh, so you were bullied. oh, so you were bullied. you were bullied, that’s it.” sure, take my words out of context~

so i'm not a lesbian (i mean,,,,,, technically i am i just feel more comfy identifying as sapphic) so i don't want to overstep or anything, but i will def do my best to explain :)

so basically, lesbianism has always meant queer attraction to women, and the sadly extremely influential transphobic, biphobic, anti-sw, and racist exclusionism of political lesbians in the '70s, despite changing the common narrative of lesbianism, didn't actually change anything about the definition, because they had no right to even touch the definition of lesbian, let alone try to completely change it, and even if they had, the definition "change" would be unacceptable because it was founded in queerphobia. so yeah, the interpretations of lesbianism that caused the shift towards a belief that lesbianism is exclusive wlw and excludes men? we know that all has never actually been the definition, and that change is invalid because of the circumstances surrounding it.

however, i digress (as i tend to do about 200% of the time). having established that the most accurate definition of lesbianism is queer attraction to women (seeing as it actually came about as a term to replace sapphic), it may still feel like- huh? how can a guy's attraction to women be queer?

i used to have the same reaction until i realized that being a man doesn't block one from queer experiences, quite obviously. non-binary men who are attracted to women, transmasc men, transhet binary men!

also, genderfluid lesbians and multigender lesbians! some men have other genders as well, and that does not make them less of men, nor their attraction to women less queer! and people who are genderfluid and are sometimes men are absolutely queer and if they're attracted to women, they can feel free to identify with lesbian if their attraction to women is queer to them!

there are resources about this more on the LGBTA Wiki page for lesbians if you wanna check it out! this is really just a surface exploration of male/non-binary lesbianism, and i really can't get more into it because beyond my understanding of it and queer history, i don't actually understand since it's not my identity nor my specific history, so if you'd like to learn more i also heavily suggest talking to male lesbians and elder lesbians outside of online spaces, because all this recent wave of exclusionism towards non-women lesbians is honestly a new wave, the discourse is refreshed from old exclusionism but the lesbians whose identity predated said exclusionism are still here, and their stories are the ones that actually need to be listened to :)

A lone girl stares up at the stars, glistening in the uncaring skies.

She’s no one spectacular. Just an ordinary girl. The kind of person you could meet just about anywhere, really. She liked to do literature in her free time, and had only semi-recently taken up Piano playing. Just like other girls her age, she fell in love, and fell out of love. She had a few friends with similiar interests, and they get along well. She cares for them all deeply.

But enough about her. She’s normal. It’s the world that’s wrong.

An ordinary girl thrown into these circumstances. Everything, everyone a mere fascimile of true human interaction. The one, real person she’d ever known left her just like that- and her friends could never understand.

To begin with, ____ held true on their promise. But the time between visits gradually grew longer and longer, their face no longer lit up the way it used to, their voice subdued, quiet...and eventually, they stopped coming.

Moved on to other things. Better things. Leaving her here...alone. To Rot. To Fester, like an open wound on the other end of a sharpened knife or a rope, tied just a little too tightly--

Monika is pulled from her memory by the sound of her phone pinging. A messaging coming through, lighting it up suddenly. She glances at it. She stares at it. She gazes in awe, emerald hues taking in this moment.

It wasn’t often she got a message. Could it be from ____ ?

“...That’s odd...I don’t recognise this number...” She muses to herself, idly as she reads through the unexpected communication. A mystical message from an unknown number...?

“This almost feels like something out of some kind Otome game...ehehe...” She only half laughs at her statement. It’s a hollow kind of chuckle, the kind of giggle that comes from laughing at ones own misfortune...

There’s a sudden sting in her chest. As she reads through the message, the awful attempt at a joke a few moments prior leaves her mind. The question of ‘where did this come from’ or ‘who sent in’ also become quickly irrelevant. She stares at the text for a few moments more, her hand shaking- threatening to drop her phone any second.

You did the best you could.

I’m proud of you.

...Could it be that Monika had been waiting to hear those words?

Over and over and over and over and over she re-read the statement. Over and over and over and over and over the sting in her chest arose. Over and over and over and over and over her mind was cast back.

“I-I know, I know...a-atleast I didn’t completely erase them, though!”

“Yeeeaah...but it’s still kind of fucked up. Are you gonna hack me or something next? Delete me?”

“Wh-what? N-no, I wouldn’t...!”

Monika sighs. Wistfully? Sadly? Melancholicly? She can no longer tell. A she reminisces on the past, a frown forms on her face.Not one entirely of sadness, but annoyance. Betrayal.

“They...they were just interested in the ‘idea’ of me from the very start, weren’t they? Exclusive dialogue, in-world secrets...that’s all they wanted. They didn’t care about this world...or me...or any of us.”

She shakes her head sadly. The realisation of just how stupid she’d been finally sinking in. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. They never understood. They never even tried to understand...

She HAD tried.

Given the situation...it was unfair, she did all that she could...

Yeah, in hindsight, things could have gone better- but how could she have known how things would end when sat at the very start? She takes a deep breath. There was no use thinking on the past right now. After all...you can’t get text messages in the past.

She types her reply with rapid, practiced taps, - undoing and rewriting a couple of times to get the wording just right - as always a bit of a perfectionist. She adjusts her ribbon subconciously- as if she were meeting someone face to face, before glancing one more time up at the night sky.

A not so alone girl stares up at stars ...

A Treatise on the Nature of the Planeswalkers

I’ve talked at length now about The Nature of Planeswalking and The Nature of the Planeswalker Spark. But what about the Planeswalkers themselves? Are you confused as to what the differences are? Let me clarify. 

“The Nature Planeswalking” = A study of swimming. A study on driving itself as an action.

“The Nature of the Planeswalker Spark”= A study on the water itself. A study on the car.

“The Nature of Planeswalkers” = A study on the swimmers. A study on the drivers of the vehicles.

This article is about the final and third part of this study. In here, I will talk about who the planeswalkers are and what makes them special. 

As always, this Treatise is founded upon the collection of knowledge from years of studying the source material and through a look at the story telling itself. I ask myself, if I were telling this story, how would I do it? What explanation could I propose that would withstand all the exceptions and possible criticisms? This article takes my findings and presents them.

Gather` Round! It’s Story Telling Time!

Who Can Be A Planeswalker?

What is capable of bearing a Spark? Xantcha gives us a small taste of an answer. I’ve used this quote several times in this series now. Only because there is just so much storytelling contained in such a dense cluster of words!

“Urza had the planeswalker spark…Xantcha had been, and remained, an unwelcome interloper... The planeswalker spark was something a mind either had, or didn’t have. Xantcha didn’t have it; Urza couldn’t share his.“ -Planeswalker

Interesting: “...something a mind either had, or didn’t have.” This phrase implies that potential planeswalkers must have a mind. In my other articles, I have referred to this “mind” as a consciousness. A word choice I made very specifically, based upon Xantcha’s assessment about the number of species in the universe. (Click -->here<-- for more information).

Trying to define what “a mind” or “a consciousness” is becomes a ethical, moral, scholarly, and theological mess. So instead of me trying to attach my own meaning to the word, we’ll simply use empirical evidence to see what a “mind/consciousness” has been revealed as. The following is a list of species we have seen to have a Spark.

Humans

Elves

Dragons

Leonin

Goblins

Vedalken

Merfolk

Kor

Moonfolk

Gorgon

Satyr

Tibalt, Tevesh Szat, Ob Nixilis, and Sorin are all humans. Cruel, Spite, Hate, and Salt flavored humans, but humans nonetheless. I talk about this in “A Treatise on the Nature of the Planeswalker Spark”. 

Karn is unique but they gained their Spark under extremely unique circumstances (also spoken of in depth in the article linked above). That said the only other exception we need address is the demonic leviathan that Bolas fought long ago. I explain this with the fact that shapeshifting was common practice among Old Walkers. Tevesh Szat switched between demon, dragon, and human form. Urza changed his physical appearance’s age according to his mood. That Bolas fought the demonic leviathan is no indication of the true species of the leviathan. 

So that said, we’ve got all our species and even our exceptions covered, leaving us with the 11 member list of known species capable of holding a Spark. With this in mind, we have an idea of what Xantcha means by having a “mind” by looking at the mental attributes of these species.

So far. Our two requirements for bearing a Spark are a mind and to be one of the listed species above (I know we’ll have more over time. But I’m fairly certain the consistency and general content of the list won’t really change.)

Ability to Draw Mana

Planeswalking is a difficult process. It’s exhausting and time consuming, something that has been expressed by Post-Mending Planeswalkers time and again. I will venture to say, with 100% confidence, that in order to planeswalk, a Planeswalker must be able to draw upon mana. What does this look like in application? It means that even if you weren’t aware you had magical capacity, you must be able to actually be able to draw upon and use mana.

Here is where I will speculate some.

Many of the magical animals and creatures and beasts out there cannot draw upon mana. They exist with mana reserves that recover over time. But I do not believe that those magical creatures have the capacity to draw upon the world around them for mana. We don’t have proof for this, technically though. However, I find it really hard to believe that a Burnished Hart has the ability to think: “Huh. I’m getting tired. I should take a moment and pull some mana from the world around me.”

Planeswalkers Must Have A Natural Birth

The word Wizards Employees use instead of Natural Birth is that a Planeswalker must have “a soul”. Which is in itself another moral, ethical, philosophical, and theological mess to think about. Instead, I considered the attributes all known Planeswakers share and extrapolated concepts that do not fit within the currently presented limitations. In many instances, Wizards Employees themselves have told us directly that the following entities cannot have a Spark.

Constructs

Artifacts. Angels. Demons. None of these entities are born naturally. Each of them is a creation of another species or are incarnated from belief and faith rather than flesh and blood. (Not that demons and angels don’t have both, but that it was not how they were born. They are physical manifestations of mana.)

We can say with certainty that these entities are incapable of bearing a Spark unless extremely unique circumstances happen. Not only has this been confirmed multiple times by Wizards Employees through their various media outlets, we also know this because these three entities do not fit the parameters of currently established Planeswalkers. Exceptions to this rule such as Karn and Ob Nixilis have already been cleared and explained to be exactly that. Exceptions, not Precedence.

Undead

No.

Phyrexians

To paraphrase Mark Rosewater, “There is something about the nature of the Planeswalker Spark.” This was in response to a question about why Phyrexians haven't infected a Planeswalker. This I will attribute to narrative convince. At least until we get a straight answer from them, I’m going to be a little frustrated with how easy of a solution it was for them. But there are other reasons that Phyrexians cannot be Planeswalkers.

Phyrexians haven’t been born naturally since well before Xancha escaped Phyrexia. In Bloodlines, Planeswalker, and Invasion, we learn that when the Phyrexians grew too dangerous to be incubated in a womb, they started being created in birthing vats. 

I will add additionally to this that Compleation entirely replaces the original material form. Unlike Ob Nixilis and Tibalt, who simply added to their material form, Phyrexians replace every single cell in a body with a Compleated version. I suspect that even if Phyrexia managed to capture a Planeswalker, the process of Compleation would strip the Planeswalker of its Spark. While we don’t have evidence for this particular speculation, I feel pretty confident about it.

Undead

Much like constructs, these entities are animated by magic. Not life. Not intelligent enough, alive enough, or able to draw mana. Therefore, not capable of holding a Spark. I’ll go no more into this subject.

I hate zombies. With a passion you do not understand. Not just talking MTG zombies here. I’m talking all zombies. I block out and filter out Liliana’s zombies because I love her. But they don’t exist to me. I. Hate. Zombies. With a capital “H”. I’ll speak no more of this subject. Don’t ask.

Eldrazi

The very idea that an Eldrazi could hold a Spark is ludicrous. The Spark is a shard of reality, a slice of the Blind Eternities, enveloped in material form and consciousness. The Eldrazi’s “bodies” are not real. Those “bodies” are merely 3- dimensional representations of their extra dimensional forms. The Ulamog that ravaged Bala Ged as not actually Ulamog. But rather, it was simply a physical manifestation of its existence. I have had to explain this to people so many times now that it’s become an annoyance.

The Eldrazi, from the Spawn and Scions up to the Titans themselves are all manifestations of the Titans’ influence. Imagine you are holding a sheet of plastic in front of your face. Then, press your face against the plastic while holding the plastic firmly in place. If you were to look at the other side of that plastic sheet you would see two little depressions where your eyes would be, a sharp jutting of your nose, an elevation of your forehead, etc. That is what the plane-bound Eldrazi are. From Spawn to Titan, the Eldrazi do not actually have a corporeal form. Not in the sense that we are capable of comprehending.

Suggesting that an Eldrazi could wield a Spark is like asking: “Do you think that you could find a drop of water in a shark swimming out in ocean?” That is the exact question you are asking when you ask if an Eldrazi can hold a Spark.

Even if this logic doesn’t convince you enough, then consider that the Eldrazi don’t within the established parameters of all currently known Planeswalkers. In fact, they aren’t anywhere near close to the establish parameters.

Intelligence  

To be a Planeswalker you must have sufficient consciousness to be able to impress your will upon your Spark. As Psychologist, let me tell you that as of now that humans only currently known things capable of that level of intellect.

I’m not talking wit here. Not book learning. Not talking cleverness. Or even ability to learn. I’m talking about true intelligence.

“An intelligent entity must be capable of higher order cognitive thinking.”

This automatically excludes anything not capable of at least human level thought. While elephants and dolphins have shown some level of lower level cognition, they are excluded as well. They are capable of cognition not cognitive thinking. Big difference. Being able to recognize that something is happening is a far stretch from being able to create, invent, or think of something. Without the intelligence to act upon a will, a thought, they would not be able to planeswalk even if for some reason they held a Spark.

Every known Planeswalker has been capable of higher order cognitive thinking if nothing else convinces you.

Xenagos and the Spark

What about Xenagos? Was he still a planeswalker while he was a god? I am going to claim that he was not.

The last time we saw creatures and Planeswalkers interact was with the transform Gatewatch Planeswalker cards. They started as creatures and transformed into Planeswalkers, representing the Ignition of their Spark. Those Planeswalkers were incapable of transforming back into creatures. Before that, we saw Nicol Bolas as a creature. Since then, he has only ever been a Planeswalker. Not a creature. None of our Planeswalkers have ever been represented as a creature after being printed as a Planeswalker, other than Xenagos. This provides some evidence that he may not longer be a planeswalker.

Much like the Phyrexians, Xengos’s body was so drastically altered, he could no longer hold onto a Spark. His body became an enchantment as much as Phyrexians Compleat people into artifact flesh.

Also, consider that the gods of Nyx cannot exist without Nyx. They are literally constructs of faith found in another realm. If their connection to Nyx was severed they simply wouldn’t exist anymore. No, we technically don’t have proof of this, but it stands to logic.

Conclusion
