Revolver~ 💿
Revolver is a weird one because I can find a flaw with every song, except for...
Favorite song: Tomorrow Never Knows
It's the only one that doesn't have at least one lyric I find annoying so it kinda wins by default. Of course, they did kinda cheat by just making it one long quote from the Tibetan Book of the Dead, but that was a better choice than some of the others made on this album...
Also you can't beat that soundscape. Just fantastic studio work there. A little work of art.
Now, I thought it would be hard at first to find a least favorite on this album, but in the end I found two...
Unfavorite: Taxman or Doctor Robert
Lookit the boys in "Taxman," maxing out their Boomer energy while only averaging twenty-four years between them. Object lesson in how wealth turns your head. Cry me a feckin' river, George.
From my vantage point in the capitalist hellscape of USA 2023, I read about the England the boys grew up in and am sick with envy. Well, not so much the repressive and toxic social attitudes. But the community aspects? The government's doings? It makes this American cry. Robust public transportation. The National Health Service. A functioning social safety net.
And, uh, all this is essential to the Beatles (four nobodies with no real show biz connections)' rise to the top? Yeah, I think you could be a bit more "thankful," Georgie. You'd not have broken out of the world of playing sleazy nightclubs without the leisure and support of the thousands of local fans who began patronizing you at the Cavern and getting your name in Brian Epstein's ear. A full lunch hour, even for the lowliest pink-collar jobs, whereby you can make a daily habit of seeing BABY BEATLES play down the street at noon? John (and other key British '60s musicians) getting to go to 'art college'? George's dad being able to support a stay-at-home spouse and four kids on one bus driver's salary? Paul's dad's employer paying off his gambling debts and trying to keep him on the straight and narrow, instead of sacking him on the spot as would happen in any "at-will" employer? Mona Best having the spare room to turn her basement into a club? George Martin having the tenure and creative control at EMI to take a risk mentoring his rough Liverpudlian studio-virgins? Ringo's extremely poor family not being rendered so broke by his year-long hospital stay that his stepdad couldn't afford to buy him a drum set for Christmas? Oh, and let's not forget the Labour government decriminalising homosexuality. That's civilisation. It's all worth paying for, lad!
Anyway, the government still left you boys enough money to a) buy nice homes and cars and party party party, b) found and then completely mismanage Apple Corps, and c) spend a decade suing each other into oblivion. It's not like the taxman left you bereft. You were, like, fine.
But at least Taxman's lyrics are vaguely clever, and it's fun to listen to. Doctor Robert sounds too samey, but in a less interesting way. A true throwaway. And its lyrics are shit.
I could lop both of them off the album and be OK.

ROLLING STONE, APRIL 2001: Mutter review and interview with Paul
Very adorable, the tiny creature. His hands are so small and his eyes aren't even open yet. Don't think of anything at all and last of all probably of the evil Uncle Lindemann.
He now wants to be the voice from the pillow and take revenge badly. For the bad times when his mother's breasts didn't cry milk and he wasn't allowed to lick his nipples and didn't even have a navel. For this he will now sink Mama in the river and then dream of small children who are buried in the wet sand. A not entirely fair montage of the perfidious cover and three songs from the new Rammstein album "Mutter".
But Lindemann is certainly happy to be quoted - after all, no one writes satanic verses to be forgotten. The fact that he no longer wants to talk about it after the deed is done only makes his poetry even more of a beacon. This is now burning and blazing again over all continents and is lighting the hero's way to immortality. Alone: It flickers in the same colors as its predecessors. A new Rammstein record, but nothing new from Berlin. Pretty sick fantasies as if stolen from the Hannibal massacre, a song is finally called "Links 2 3 4" and is the only one that pricks your ears, but more of that later. When Lindemann drools "Rein Raus", there isn't a bit of metaphor involved in the sweaty game. If it weren't for the fact that the five friends were behind him, as always and constantly, the title would have what it takes to become a real hit on the Arenal ham road. Missed the chance, no metal goes with the sangria, what a shame. And then he comes too early, the stallion! We're already looking forward to the video and America's puritans to the stage show.
But to be honest, we're not too happy about it when we think of Germany's most successful rock export after the Scorpions. At first the arsonists kept us on our toes with the suspicion of serving themselves to the right fringe and made it difficult for anyone to be allowed to discover musical novelties in the crude mixture of heavy metal and techno with impunity. And now, with the critical voices from the left-establishment dying down, the boys are recording a third studio album that's about as surprising as recent Joe Cocker and Rod Stewart products. "As a musician, you always believe that your new record sounds fresh," says guitarist Paul Landers, who, after Richard Kruspe on the last one, was assigned to me as a credit agency this time. As I said, Lindemann doesn't talk. And so Paul thinks "Mutter" sounds fresh and new. Because every musician does, "even AC/DC and the Ramones". Of which it does not become truer in the carefully considered individual case. “But it's definitely nonsense trying to explain the innovations to someone who doesn't like the record anyway.”
Because my outing is still pending, Landers now continues light-footedly: "I think we left the tried and tested and redesigned the little things. Well, of course we're not Moby, who reinvents himself for every album. But he is also alone."And besides, there's something about being recognized by the fans. The class goal seems to have been reached. A plus, especially for continuity in America. But Paul doesn't want to know anything about that: “People now act as if we were the only successful German band over there." He is right. “But Atari Teenage Riot can also be bought there, the Guano Apes are known in places, the Einfallenden Neubauten, and Nena with the balloons in English!" But yes. And what about nectar? And didn't Inga Rumpf once have a ticket to New York?
For the new album, Paul tells us, the band have set themselves ”to be particularly good. That would have almost gone against the tree.” Pressure, of course, couldn't be denied, weighs heavily on a band and even on this one, “but I then called a fan of ours and he just said: Paul, you're good, so do it like this, you can!”  After that everything was fine. Till brought 'about 50 songs' into the studio, there were discussions and then "Mutter". Life can be so simple sometimes. But now I would like to learn more about the discussions. “Of course there are two factions in the band!” Paul grins. I had already suspected that, even though Richard Kruspe didn't really want to comment on any of the lyrics at the time and Paul Landers now says: "The lyrics, that's so us!”
He says more. For example, that he is not Richard Kruspe and also belongs to the faction "which likes the piggy, messy and not the lyrically nice". His group is the stronger one it seems. But always ready to compromise. "When Till called out in a song, 'Hello hello, I want to fuck', the suckers wanted it 20 times, the others didn't want it at all. In the end it happened once. We always find a good mix.”
And sometimes they are also good for surprises, completely hidden. Which brings us back to “Links 2 3 4″. A noteworthy song, perhaps. It starts with a hundred people goose-stepping, then Lindemann asks a few stupid questions, and then it comes: “You want my heart in the right place, but then I look down and it beats to the left!” Hannes Wader could almost have written that back then, when Lindemann was still suffering through his messed up childhood in real socialism. “We made a song whose music the critics always wanted to hear, but whose lyrics they didn't want to hear from us. That is our statement. We say how we see things.” That's all there is to say, Paul believes. We think so too.
Then Lindemann sings "Here comes the sun" with the voice of Ozzy Osbourne, and then it gets gross again. Lindemann dreams of burnt skin and orders "Feuer Frei! bang bang” The world needs exactly such guys, or at least a good band, says Paul. “Without someone with character at the mic, nothing works. Good bands with an uncharismatic person as a singer never make it.” Voice is not important: “We see that with Grönemeyer. But we're lucky to have a man with life experience at the front. He went through things that none of us want to experience. Very bad things, but they are of use to us now.”
Even less godly, Richard Kruspe had described Till last year as "severely mentally disturbed". But Paul isn't Richard either, we've learned. With the new album, however, Rammstein have remained plain, simple and also somewhat disappointing. Pure pathos, bombast of steel, children's choirs and battlefield chants, bloodlust and purgatory. Produced by five nice guys and a sixth that you don't know exactly. The whole thing will probably only become interesting again when Mr. Lindemann writes his memoirs. We can even generously do without their soundtrack.

i challenge you to rank the new djo album!
tbh idek if i could, but end of beginning would absolutely be in my top spot
see i’ve been so afraid to rank the album:( both bc i don’t even know if i can do it bc i love every single song so much, plus i don’t wanna upset anyone BAHHAH
BUT
i will put my opinions under the cut if anyone is curious hehe (ranked worse to best)
p.s. my least favorite song on the album is still so so so so so so so so insanely good, i just have to put one last:( i’m sorry
13. probably is that all it takes only because it’s legitimately 21 second long BAHAH it’s obviously just a cool little transition joe was like “lemme just. idk stuff it right here idk” but i still like it a lot it’s weird and a little psychedelic-esque and it transitions so deliciously into go for it:)
12. probably go for it:( i love the beginning it itches my brain like you wouldn’t believe, and i’m probably gonna eventually go through a phase where it’ll become my favorite, but i just haven’t gotten into it like i have the others:/
11. next… hm i think slither. love this song i listen to it probably every day BAHHAHAHAHGS but i think it is definitely not my favorite on the album, still so so solid still would totally recommend.
10. runner… yes runner i think next. i love this song it’s such a perfect intro to the album i love the sound and the chorus is so good it’s so djo i love 🫶 i would say, if anything, the only reason it’s so low is because all the others are just… so good. fire song killer love to speed to it.
9. next me thinks…. on and on. LOVE this song. lyrics, on point. beat, killer. TOP song i love it. vocals are killer if i saw it live i’d cream myself im not kidding
ok this is where things start getting difficult.
8. pls god. don’t kill me. but i think it’s gonna be end of beginning at number eight. HEAR ME OUT LISTEN ITS OK SIT DOWN ILL EXPLAIN. it’s only bc i have an apprehension towards sad songs and this song. makes me cry. every time. without fail. in the cereal aisle of the grocery store, in the library, when i’m driving. i can’t listen to it and not cry:( bc i relate to it so much and you can tell how raw the lyrics are for him and it’s not necessarily sad sounding but it just evokes emotions within me that i’d simply rather keep buried. i love. LOVE this song. if i wasn’t emotionally unavailable it’d be at number one.
7. next i think gloom. and it’s only this low bc i’ve listened to it so much since it was released so long ago so, it’s like an oldie but a goodie:) this song is so fucking good, when i tell you i go through the full range of emotions listening to this song im not exaggerating. if you want a good djo song that will scare your friends, play gloom
6. change is next:) what a great djo song :) what a cute little bop :) i have really fond summer memories attached to this song so it’s bittersweet to listen to now but it’s so fun and upbeat but the lyrics can kill you if you listen a bit too hard (a djo staple) the relisten-ability of this song is top notch. i could play it for three hours straight and not wanna skip it
yo i am sweating BULLETS trying to decide just know that
5. hmmmm…. um… figure you out? yea. figure you out at five. think i listened to this about 400 times the day it was released. so. 1:23-1:40 is god’s work it really is. give it a listen now or i’ll creep into your room tonight😠
4. half life<3 <3 <3 i scream to this song in the car on the highway this is the go to highway song if anyone was curious. i’ll just play 1:49-2:24 on repeat and scream. scream until my lungs give out and my voice goes hoarse. the lyrics are so poignant and you can FEEL the emotion he’s practically shoving it in your face i wanna EAT THIS SONG
3. kay… controversial take here. but coming in at third place is climax. this song is. perfect for every fucking occasion. walking home from work? yep. studying for class? uh huh. having a mid life crisis in your room? absolutely. making out with your pretty girlfriend or boyfriend? you betcha. its slow and it’s very hypnotic and almost a little off putting but also soothing like . i wanna be in a room, bathed in deep red light, or maybe deep, sapphire blue, and just dance to this fucking song in an empty, dark club. like play this song in the complete dark with headphones in (preferably outside with nature surrounding you) and just. feel. this song. i can’t really describe it any other way. you either get it or you don’t. you’re gonna love this song or you’re gonna hate it. i won’t judge.
alright. this decision was. nearly impossible. but.
2. fool🤤fooooolll🤤 this song is . a masterpiece. a full experience. i could literally play this song for an entire day, over and over, and have this happy little face ☺️ this song makes me want to speak to joseph. this song makes me want to eat his brain.
(fyi fool and i want your video are neatly tied for number one, just at this VERY moment i like i want your video just a HAIR more)
1. and number one is i want your video. ⚠️WARNING⚠️ this is the most djo song djo has ever created. this song. is why . i love his music. i really can’t explain this in words but. if i were to describe to you. how my brain functions. how my mind works. how thoughts come to be in my head. how i would create music. it’s this song. it’s like he took out my brain and squeezed out all of its musical juices and maybe a song out of the liquid. this song is so good, from beginning to end. i wish it was seven hours long. every little noise and nook and cranny of this song is perfect. it’s exactly how i want this song to be. no notes. none. plus the lyrics . the implications of this song. i YEARN to be this song. if i’m reincarnated i wanna just be this song i just wanna be one NOTE of this song. what a bold move from djo and it really paid off wow good for him stellar work

i keep thinking about matty saying he breathes in rythm fucks in rythm because his lyrics have such a good cadence(?) to them and its unparalleled and i know its probably because of his lyrical process but its so fucking good especially un ugh like i did not like that song until the videos of it live recently and now its driving me mental how good it is
im also just in a bit of an emo mood rn because i love this band so fucking much it makes me want to cry and it scares me a little bit because ive never been so into a band. like there are bands that i have been into fully and like got the merch for, listened to the demos, own (nearly) every album on CD etc but i feel insane about the 1975
but yeah just saying hi !!! i hope you're doing alright !!! - 🐸
No, i 10000% agree with you. Like, I’m into a lot of good music and good artists and know the lyrics and backstories to their songs and stuff, but nothing in my life has ever made me feel the way that I do about the 1975. Even my family comments on it sometimes. Like they always say “you’re an obsessive person but I’ve never seen you SO obsessed with anything like this.”
And, I’ve given it a lot of thought over the years, and finally decided that it’s because this band is truly special. There just isn’t anything else quite like it. Matty and George are a terrific team. The chemistry and history between them are clearly reflected in the work that they make together. Adam is a fuckin legend on guitar. Ross is SMOOTH too. They love each other so much. Matty has never done anything inauthentic in his life. He’s don’t some wanky shit, sure. He’s teetered on the edge of obnoxious (in a charming way, imo) he’s made some questionable choices, but nobody can ever accuse him of not being passionate, not being truthful, and not being authentic. I think art requires radical honesty and he’s not afraid of it.
Basically, this is the kind of magic that we only get every once in a while when you put a group of really intelligent and talented individuals who also happen to selflessly love their craft and love each other in one place. It’s practically unheard of these days. For an artist like them not to sell out or do things for optics or PR or whatever. A miracle really. I quite literally wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for the 1975. So, yeah, I too get emotional about it. Hahaha.

The Car Album ranking/review:
10) Big Ideas - this was beautiful I just don't see myself listening a lot but the lyrics is what stands out to me the most as it is very catchy, even now I am literally saying to myself "and I cannot for the life of me remember how it goes" it's really good, I feel bad putting it down here...
09) Mr Schwartz - again don't see myself listening to it a lot, but not bad at all this is a bit more of my style that I like to listen to and I'm surprised it's not any higher, but it would be a crime to put these other ones any lower as well. However, I fear I may become obsessed with it soon, idk... I have a feeling...
08) There'd Better Be a Mirrorball - again, I feel so bad that I have to put this so low because I love the intro, and this was published in August and I love this, but they topped this on every single aspect with the other songs. This was such a good song. Definitely will be listening to this again. And DEFINITELY recommend.
07) Sculptures Of Anything Goes - Wow, just wow. Again, a beautiful intro to the song. I have no words. This is definitely a song that is more of a song that I would like. However, I'm surprised that it took me a few listens to rank it this high... (Mind you, I've listened to this whole album 5 times)
06) Hello You - This song is really catchy and overall so good. I have no words, my mouth was open when it started playing. This is a typical song of Artic Monkeys that goes very well with the general public, and I hope this song gets the recognition it deserves, because it is actually really good. Definitely will be coming back to this song in literal tears.
05) Jet Skis On The Moat - wtf. This was gorgeous. This made me feel so nostalgic from the very beginning of this song I felt really nostalgic for no reason. It nearly made me cry for some reason. Idk why, this song makes me feel a lot of emotions in one whole go and most songs can't do that so I really appreciate this song for doing that, which is genuinely really impressive.
04) I Ain't Quite Where I Think I Am - Yet another song that was published a little earlier in October but immediately I fell in love this song, it reminded of songs such as Snap Out Of It, some people may say that it sounds outdated, but I love this, genuinely love this song so much. I think people that like more of their more famous songs would like this song.
03) Perfect Sense - such a beautiful way to finish this extraordinary album, it's really nice to listen to. It really did make "perfect sense" to put it in the end, it left me nostalgic and kinda sad, but in a good way, yk, also another thing about this song is that only in the moment it ended did I realise how much I missed them.
02) Body Paint - Again this song was published in September and I have more time to love this song, but it is such a good song. It makes me feel sentimental, I loved the ending, the outro is so good and should be made iconic ong.
01) The Car - reminded me of songs such as Do Me A Favour (my comfort song) again, a song that makes me feel so nostalgic. A solemn yet beautiful intro and the way that builds up its tension is spectacular, it reminded me a bit of Abba and sad indie rock music put together, this song is so much better than I expected. The solo guitar on the end made the song 100x better and the way it ends abruptly for some reason makes sense. By far my favourite in this album if you couldn't tell through this ranking.
Overall, this album was amazing and I'm so happy that they are back. This album was a nostalgic, sentimental, definitely making you want to rip your hair out from tears kinda album. And I loved that about it.

rina sawayama really said every single song on this album will either be the banger of the decade OR make you genuinely cry on public transport while also being the banger of the decade

this probably has no real basis in canon (aside from jacobi being whiny in 70% of the precanon content we got within the show) but i feel like lots of people don't appreciate the potential of maxwell and kepler as a comedic duo enough.
i think everyone within si-5 is kind of a clown but the way jacobi is just so. loud about it makes maxwell and kepler (as genius ai specialist and master tactician respectively) take the place as the Sensible Part of the team but can you imagine them bonding together through chaos. bullying jacobi together by committing to some shitty little bit.
i think as they get more attuned to each other that would be something they'd enjoy leaning into every once in a while, if only bc of how it catches people off guard. kepler doing a stupid joke? okay sure. maxwell doing a stupid joke? makes sense. both of them pulling your leg TOGETHER? horrifying. you'll never see it coming
and they're soooo similar too. you KNOW they'd be on the same wavelength, running a joke so smoothly you wouldn't even notice what's happening until it's too late. they're both already so good at playing with people's expectations i think they should abuse that power more

the reason kepler is so fascinating to me is that what intrigues me is how a character is made. what do you get when you pick them apart? how do they find their place in the plot and change its course? what were the writers thinking?
and with kepler it's like. all those question lead back to him? he's so much a creation of himself it's like he almost exists outside of the story, or maybe inside his own.
warren kepler is a performance, a collection of skills that does what the plot (or his perspective of it) needs him to. and the thing is... *he* did that. if he’s a construction that’s a construction *he* made. it sets him apart from everyone else. he enters like an actor walking on stage, observing from the outside and planning his next move accordingly and completely deliberately. which is exactly what a fictional character is: something constructed that fulfills a specific purpose within a story.
kepler always has that goddard-sanctioned performance on his mind and it makes him seem so detached from the rest of the cast. they’re hit so hard by everything that happens: they get hurt, change, or straight up die. even within si-5: maxwell is killed by the story. jacobi is changed forever.
for most of the time, kepler is barely touched in such a deliberate way. he loses his hand in the most painful way possible and it SHOULD be a way the story touches him. but he just doesn't acknowledge it and so he almost exists separately from it, still pursuing his mission.
but here's the thing: he's not a detached character. he's actually a PERSON and his performance doesn’t free him from the weight of the plot, it's actually just an additional thing for him to carry. he does such a good job fooling the characters around him and fooling US that it doesn't show, and maybe he's got himself fooled too.
but there's one moment the performance ends and he comes back to the ground, and the story reaches out, touches him, makes him face consequences, which is in the finale when he dies.
and what’s one thing that happens just before that, that has nothing to do with his mission or his creation of himself? it's admitting that he's a person. it's taking a dive head-first into the narrative and facing the consequences, because you know what? they're worth it.
which is to say can you IMAGINE the kind of identity crisis he’d go through if he made it out of the whole thing alive holy shit

beyond the fleeting gales by crying is no joke the best album i have ever heard in my entire life, like both for personal and objective reasons. the album art is somewhat crude and might put people off about the quality of the music but it seems to be an ongoing joke the band members have going on bcs Look at this shirt lmfao.
Tumblr media
the first tracks honestly the only one that I initially did not like listening to because it takes a while to pick up, but over time I’ve come to appreciate it as part of crying’s ability to have a setup and a payoff that’s unpredictable and unbelievably euphoric when it hits you. There are several microexamples of this within every single track on the album, my favorites being in ‘well and spring’ and ‘wool in the wash’, by foreshadowing the final chorus with 2 or 3 lush choruses before it that showcase a new direction in the sound pallet, but leave a bit more to be desired. this is no problem though because that desire is WAY more than met by the end of the song with an explosive final chorus that can only be described as being continuously pummeled by a professional boxer and peaceful waves on a beach at the same time. this method crying uses sticks with me personally because as a musician myself i often find myself making things that i wish i had a way of expanding upon more because i know they have potential, but im just a weak little thang though so it takes a lot of time and effort to make any kind of progress and i usually end up scrapping things. i think that’s one of the common struggles associated with being a musician, but crying’s riffs consistently flesh out their ideas and fully realize them in every single song in BTFG. And they *know* that they can because of the intentional foreshadowing to the epic ending chorus with the little mini choruses. it’s awesome and fresh even after countless listens because the pacing in every concept is so expertly built up to, and none of the grand choruses feel like a truck hitting you in a bad way. its definitely still a truck. but you know youre abt to be hit by it, and know itll feel good. what even is this analogy anyway. im gonna return to the album cover i brought up at the start. have you ever like looked at a piece of art for so long u start seeing things that might not be there? i feel like the album cover for BTFG does this because the painting kinda sucks but i find it to be full of life and revitalized by the music; im finding qualities of it that i like because the music gave that extra dimension to it by association. in a way i think the album cover is like one of those prechoruses that leave more to be desired but are inevitably met by the bandmembers’ artistic vision and confidence plus Skill cos i cant undermine how freaking technical every single moving part of every song is, even the minimal parts bring out a new component. the vocals take the spotlight and turn the vibe knobs to 10 whenever the synths dwindle to the little analog bweep bwoop thingys, and the syncopation with the keys and the guitar is absolutely nuts, especially in solos like the one in wool in the wash. i read a comment once that that song made the OP straightup cry and they couldnt understand why, and that’s exactly the beauty that the songs i BTFG consistently pull through on. I have this thing where i really struggle piecing lyrics/movie dialogue together without captions and even then I really *feel* the passion and vision that the bandmembers wanted to convey. it oozes out of every single second, and so many ideas are packed into each section. sometimes it does feel busy but idec cos it sounds good and thats also just a statement to how much these people love their craft. they put all this time and crammed it into every second, like it all HAD to be there at once before they lost it or something. im kinda the same with my writing style lol but no english teachers grading this so 🖕the lyrics are also some of those poetic interpretable kinda deal, or maybe theyre not and im dumb but Idc. I interpret them to conflicts in my life and they r a nice place to go to to swim in some of my less nice thoughts comfortably, and i think the only other album that’s ever done that for me is vdc by sweet trip. i can keep going but ya this is what happens when nobody responds to me spam posting songs on twitter LOL. thanks for reading

Now that HS3 is officially out, here’s some of my opinions on the songs. This is not in tracklist order btw, this is from my most favorite to least favorite which let me tell you it is not easy because this is a great album.
Matilda: I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to listen to this song without crying. I’ve listened to it so many times and everytime I end up in tears because for personal reasons the theme and the lyrics are something I connect to.
If I was to ever meet Harry and thank him for writing a song this would be the one. I know it might sound stupid or silly but him saying that you can start your own family filled with people who love you and that you don’t have to be sorry…it’s something I needed to hear and maybe it’s because he’s been such a part of my life for so long but it carries a lot of weight coming from him.
This is my favorite song on the album and it might be my favorite song of his.
Keep Driving: Only Harry Styles could sing,
“Maple syrup
coffee
pancakes for two
Hash brown
egg yolk
I will always love you”
and make it sound like the most romantic thing in the world.
Little Freak: I’ll be honest I’m kinda surprised at how high this song ranks for me cause the first time I listened to it I liked it but I felt like I enjoyed the other songs more but I guess it went moving up the list the more I listened to it! Also, I love how his voice sounds in the chorus.
This lyric will forever make me scream! IYKYK
“stay green a little while
you bring blue lights to dreams”
Love of my life: I love this song, but I’m not sure how I feel about it being the one that closes the album; but since I’m ranking on how much I like ‘em and not on what I think of their overall placement in the album we move on...
As It Was:  It was difficult to choose between this one and Late Night Talking because I enjoy them about the same but I have a soft spot for As It Was so it edges out Late Night Talking by a little bit.
Late Night Talking: I am so glad this album is finally out so I can use this song as my ringtone 😂 I’m not sure why but this gives me summer vibes and I am here for it.
Grape Juice: Honestly, at this point the deciding factor of where I place these songs is the smallest things. For example, I lose sleep over this lyric:
“I pay for it more than I did back then”
IFYKYK
Daylight: The lyricism on this album is outstanding and this is one of my favorites:
“If I was a
bluebird
I would fly to you
You’d be the spoon
Dip you in honey so I could be sticking to you”
I want this embroidered on something. I swear Harry has a way with lyrics that with any other artist it wouldn’t work but with him it does.
Boyfriend: I really like the melody of this song, and the guitar is so pretty. There’s just something really soft about it, makes me kinda wish the album had closed with this one.
This is where the order of these start having meaning again because the following are my least favorite ones.
Satellites: I like this as a cool down, does that make sense? I feel like it’s placed at a really good point in the album to give a break from the roller coaster of emotions from the other songs and prep you for the last two. If I’m listening to the album or multiple songs from the album then I’ll listen to it but I don’t think I’ve ever reached for it on its own.
Daydreaming: I like the beat, and I wouldn’t skip it if it came on but 🤷‍♀️
Music For a Sushi Restaurant: I like the sound of it. And that’s about it.
Cinema: I really don’t like it. This is the only song in the album I will consistently skip, even Sushi I’ll listen to every once in a while. But not this one.

yes. i'm going. i'm doing it. my Official Ranking of All* VUKOVI Songs by How Much I Likeys Them
*i'm not including 17359, Verify Your Worth, or DEPARTURE cos they're more serving the album as a whole and don't stand too well as individual songs so it feels unfair. you may notice i excluded ATTENTION we'll get to that
NULA / Fall Better / VUKOVI / EPs
HADES: these first five NULA songs are the ones that really share the same spot but with how much this one's etched into my soul it had to take top prize. i like my women sinister
QUENCH: this one takes second because da swank. ok why'd i decide to do this i don't know how to describe music. it's swanky!
TAINTED: my normal taste is on the hardcore side and this tickles the innards just right on that one without screaming, ever. i thank janine so much for that
Gutless: also got da swank but summertime sweetness edition. knocked for being the same thing twice
LASSO: still got that grindy goodness if a little bit empty at times. probably the strongest & clearest messaging out of NULA (besides XX duh) which given how some of these tracks go i appreciate it
I'm Sorry: only song to make me cry like every time i hear it. i don't normally want that in my music but i must commend it.
SHADOW: i don't know how it's done, this has everything i'd normally knock but i love it to death. something about all its pieces fits together so well.
La Di Da: punky, spunky, powerful, with a chorus i can actually get behind. just not too frilly. i want a few frills.
Snakes & Ladders: this is the store-brand version of Gutless but specifically like sandwich cookies. only words i got for it.
All That Candy: personal points to this for being the first song i charter for clone hero & my brother adoring it. sister of La Di Da that doesn't wear deoderant
Run / Hide: wow ok. fuck do i say. my only thought is 'semipermeable membrane music'. does that mean it hits under the skin only a little bit? nothing's wrong with it really and it's on the right side of hard
Colour Me In: well it used to make me cry but i got better. apparently only the debut album's good at getting soppy, but this one's a lil confused
ATTENTION: same feeling as SHADOW for a lot of disparate parts making a banger of a whole. though it is two minutes and there's only one word. real good on handling those energy levels
KILL IT: a good bit awkward but not enough to slide into the Valley of Disappointment. already sounds like a dance remix so idk what was done for the actual dance remix
Behave: the first one to actually click in my head that it's abusive. but hot damn it's catchy. but hot damn i feel bad for liking it. ...and it is annoying in parts.
SLO: honestly the same as Behave in my head to me. it's probably actually better but i have a worse personal history with this one sorry
And He Lost His Mind: i don't know where the substance is but it's still pretty fun
These Ghosts Won't Let Me: i do like this one on the surface but when i penetrate it there's plywood. big energy level mismanagement, not much cuts through
I EXIST: FUCK dude i'm upset at this one. the messaging feels so mixed to me, the breakdown is great but i can't stand the rest, it fits the album so well but doesn't cut it on its own.
Aura: i only have a purely objective stance on this one, somehow, but it's another one that doesn't do much wrong. just don't like it too much.
Play With Me Cos I Can Take It: slime music. there are occasions i want to be slimy however
HURT: the same feeling as I EXIST but it toys with me even more. it Should be good but dear lord it plain is not
C.L.A.U.D.I.A: see i listen to this one regularly but for some reason whenever i try to remember it it's irritating. Huh
Schwagger: moldy but fun. why does she make puppy noises
Prey: poster child of the debut album to me. head-voice isn't too nice but like. it's fine. it's understandable. they tried their best. i can't be mad here.
XX: this one is far more an album song than a standalone song to me. it's been a while since i've heard pure girl-power third-wave rebel feminism but apparently i'm too trained on systemic nuances and gender diversity to like it in my music. i mean the whole album had that flavor but this one's blunt as an atom bomb
Target Practice: frankly this one's just suffering from overplay. i've heard it once a week for three years now. but it was my first VUKOVI song so i can't just abandon her
Thick Skinned: this is the most punk song they've done not for its content but for how it's somehow incredibly shittily good. i think it's gonna drive me insane after long enough so i'm downgrading it but on first listen it's just under Aura
Weirdo: same sort of opinion as Prey but just not as interesting
A Girl Called Jade: i listen to this regularly too but i should stop. repetition problem like most of the EPs but it's not even cool with it. and the fakeout ending was kinda mishandled
Where Are You: i can't remember this one for the life of me so it clearly isn't that good. but i do remember liking it. so here it stays
Vincible: the outro gets grating and the hollowness isn't Great, but it's servicible
Animal: yeah this is the chunk where it's all just boring. Animal i can at least groove to when i'm not paying attention but it's just. blah.
SAD: see this one should be called I EXIST cos fuck it sure does
Wander: lyrical nonsense that still manages to pull my heartstrings, but it's still worth only 5 cents in some jurisdictions and 10 cents in others
Get Hot and Feel the Butterflies: this is probably the one i'm most in love with janine's voice but i mean like. ain't much else.
Obsessions: there's like nothing here. still cute though
White Lies: what's a sugar pie
I'm Wired: well my dear greataunt had schizophrenia so i'm a bit defensive of it.
He Wants Me Not: ok we're done with the boring segment
So Long Gone: this is so generic i can hear it at the pharmacy connected to the department store. i'm not even on the woman's side either when i think i'm supposed to be. the post-chorus thing is interesting but really not suited to the song
Bouncy Castle: what the fuck is she actually saying. that's a usual complaint i have i know but this is exhaserbated to a comical level. i only know it's english from gut reaction. dead middle of Valley of Disappointment
Boy George: maybe there is actual value here but i keep hearing 'virgin poopie' and it just rips me out of it. personal failing
We Are Robots: narsty
Try Before You Buy (Use Your Sex): narstier
Part of Me: haven't heard this actually! somehow! i'll get to it but given the era these are from i have no idea how i'd react
conclusions: i've got favorites from most albums but the older they are the more iffy they get. except for ...BIWWYA apparently

talking ab old and new hyperfixations is why I'm here on this earth
so alr I'm always joking around ab how some shows and books and things changed me as a person since I was a kid and I thought why not? so yeah
1- first of all, the animated Robin Hood with the animales my sister always says that it was what made her a communist, and I can't stop myself from feeling the same. no alr if I have to be serious it probably is what made me hate rich people
2-then, the lord of the rings this is where I've become who I am. I used to watch it when I was sick (the fellowship of the ring part 2, always, cause the khazad dum scene was majestic and my favourite) but it was a tradition of my family to watch the whole triology every two or three months a(nd I was one of those annoying kids who learn the dialogues and talks with the characters). and it kind of set off my standards for films in the future (and ppl too, since I grew up having aragorn as an example of what a man should be so yeah kiss another man's head and cry ab his death and kill strange disgusting things the minute after like the alpha male you are)
3-mamma mia there's a reason why I listen to abba today, and it's because of my mother making me watch this film when I was like seven and rewatching it with me more than two times a year. i absolutely loved it even if I didn't understand some things, but singing those songs was my favourite hobby
4-wild child at the start of our mamma mia's dvd there was the advertisement of this film, and i secretly watched it (since my mom always talked bad ab it saying it was stupid) when I got a computer at like ten and and let's not talk ab how emma roberts was my second woman crush and it was awkward BUT I LOVED THAT FILM SO MUCH since my parents were sweet but a little old on this type of things it was refreshing to watch it
5-achilles crying on patroclus' body my parents bought me the Iliad when I was a kid (in Italy we start to study it in sixth grade so reading its general culture), it was prose but I absolutely loved it. there where draws of what it said, but maybe a little bit too realistic for a six years old- but the one page where there was Achilles trashing on the ground and pulling at his hair and hugging Patroclus' body was rude
6-reading harry potter's books my aunt gifted me the whole series (like a book every month) and I absolutely loved it. the reason why still today after years I remember everything is because I probably read every book at least five times. I didn't have a phone and I was like seven, so I didn't get any spoilers, and I straight up cried so many times (sirius's death, remus and dora's death, harry's death, the flashback of lily and james' death, fred's death and so many things) and I loved it. now it's rare for me to watch something without spoilers.
7-david bowie my first real queer representation my father is a little homophobic, the it's-ok-not-in-front-of-me kind but he absolutely loved david bowie. he made me listen to Hunky Dory when I was like five, and I was the kid in school that singed Changes and got bad looks but I really loved his voice. after years, in seventh grade I think, I rediscovered him and as confirmed queer person I quite obsessed on him. still thanking you dad!
8-avril lavigne ok this is alr still my father made me randomly listen to sk8er boy and I kind of obsessed on her? when I was like nine? it lasted a year or so, and I only listened to her but I loved Complicated's music video. I kinda hated Girlfriend since I was on my "i'm different from other girls" period, while I absolutely love it now that I'm a little older (and it shouldn't make sense but it does)
9-Bring Me to Life's music video and everything else still my dad. telling me it was a good one. I obsessed on the song, and the album, and Evanescence. stopped listening to them when my mother told me I was like my cousin (my millenial cousin that I hated and that loved evanescence as a teen) so I had to rediscover them at fourteen as a real angsty teen!! but still I was like ten and singing screaming wake me up inside in my room in my italian-ten-ys-english
10-kill bill still a kid, still traumatized, still loving it after almost ten years. I absolutely loved the first volume cause I liked the yellow outfit and the japanese school-girl and Uma Thurman is still today my love and O-Ren was so pretty. yeah the blood and the missing limbs but the women and the plot was so good. rewatching it after years made me realized how it influenced me and how I saw things and thought ab topics connected to violence
alr I'm done

Final afterword: Love From The Other Side
It’s been a good Saturday so far. This whole experience has given me so much, I feel I have to be thankful.
I think I’ve learnt to respect people more, and I think I’m on route to become a less grumpy person (although I also became a much more grumpier person from all this, but net positive hopefully) and a person who really sees the value in all people. I was a less settled person before, and I reserved the best I could muster for only my closest friends and family. But even then, I was withdrawn. I think even in relationships, I had a tendency to withdraw, and it would all pour out at the wrong times. I don’t think I’m there, but I like the path I’m on.
Fall Out Boy comes in with two clutch singles from their new album (dropping later this month!) that have legit shown me the way. My inner angsty teen is crying tears of joy. Sonically, it definitely sounds like something that could come right after Folie à Deux, which I’ve since found out was exactly what they were going for, collaborating once again with the producer from that album, Neal Avron.
Folie à deux is ironically exactly what went on before, but I don’t want to share in the madness anymore. Enough copium and rationalisatiol. Even sad songs get old, and I feel like I’m done singing.
The Therapist and the destroyer are in agreement: its time to bury these feelings. On the how, they’re less agreed. But we’re all sharks, and if we stop swimming we die.
To explain, I started this Tumblr as a joke years ago and we tried to make angsty memes that would get popular. That was my first ever post here, a picture of a random shark with those words. Time is a flat circle, we’re back at the start.
Two angsty quotes then, from songs I’m listening to now, to mark the end of this chapter of the journal in what will probably be the last entry in a while:
Heartbreak Feels So Good:
“We could cry a little, cry a lot Don't stop dancing, don't dare stop We'll cry later or cry now You know it's heartbreak We could dance our tears away, emancipate ourselves We'll cry later or cry now, but baby Heartbreak feels so good“
Love From The Other Side
“Model house, life meltdown, still a modern dream letdown, it kills me You know I'm dying out here What would you trade the pain for? I'm not sure We were a hammer to the Statue of David We were a painting you could never frame, and You were the sunshine of my lifetime What would you trade the pain for?
This city always hangs a little bit lonely on me, loose Like a kid playing pretend in his father's suit I'd never go, I just want to be invited, got to give up Get the feeling, don't fight it
Sending my love from the other side of the apocalypse And I just about snapped, don't look back Every lover's got a little dagger in their hand Love from the other side of the apocalypse And I just about snapped, don't look back Every lover's got a little dagger in their hand
I saw you in a bright clear field, hurricane heat in my head The kind of pain you feel to get good in the end Inscribed like stone and faded by the rain: "Give up what you love, Give up what you love before it does you in”“

*CHICAGO*
i write for free - so if you would like to support my work, you can donate here. (plus my bday is today!!!!!!! 🎂)
if you liked please reblog, recommended, like, and come talk to me about it!
——
The public didn’t know that some of the pictures that are posted of Harry that are tagged and credited to the on tour photographers were actually taken by his wife.
For example, after Chicago, the picture of Harry in the tub - completely bare and worn down from his show, you actually think the photographer took that?
No, that was snapped with YN’s iPhone, like some of the other pictures he’s posted.
Just like the one where he’s asleep on the hotel bed in a robe in Paris with all of his stuff splayed around him - allegedly taken by helene. ***
But no, it had been his wife, they had just taken a shower together and she had stayed in for a bit longer to shave her legs - when she had come out and seen him passed out.
She had to tug a bit at the robe so he wasn’t exposed and make it x-rated, then she pulled out her phone and snapped the picture - sending it to Jeff with a teasing caption.
yn: It’s exhausting being a popstar
And just like that, it appears on his Instagram for fans to go crazy over.
Or what about the snapshot of his tank that had his famous slogan embroidered into the side of the white fabric. ***
His wedding band reflecting in the flash of the light, a subtle glance at his rippled muscle below the attire as they work on his hair.
“Mm, I’m gonna save this for a lonely night,” YN jokes as she tucks her phone away.
Harry’s hand comes to cup her jaw, looking down at her where she’s sat on the floor, “Y’so fuckin’ pretty, y’know that?”
YN’s eyelids flutter a bit as she glances away from his intense gazes - he still gives her butterflies.
“Don’t get shy on me, baby. Can I not tell m’wife how gorgeous she is?” He asks, bring her hand up to kiss the back of it, “Look s’good with tha’ ring on.”
And the one that made fans go crazy.
On a warm evening, in a hotel room between venues in Italy, where they had been lounging around all day.
YN in just a thin gauzy dress that accentuated the fact she wasn’t wearing a bra and Harry just in the trousers he’d worn to get them coffee earlier that morning.
“You just took a picture of me! It’s my turn,” YN giggles, getting on her knees on the old squeaky couch and snatching the camera off of him.
“I took a picture because y’tits look nice in tha’ dress. I can see y’nipples and it’s turnin’ me on,” Harry defends, holding up his book as she snaps it.
“H, c’mon,” She pouts but squeaks when Harry tugs her into him, dropping the book and the camera as he adjusts her on his lap.
“Gonna let me take a picture of y’all nice and fucked out, darling?” He rasps, ignoring her pout and hiking her dress up her hips.
And it’s happened throughout the years, so many pictures that were littered over the internet where just uncredited snapshots from YN.
Just like the one from 2013, they were on tour, and Harry was supposed to be recording for the next album after soundcheck and before the concert. ***
Instead, after soundcheck, Harry and YN had snuck off to a little meadow and lake to have a swim. He had shimmied down to his briefs and waded in.
YN stood back, snapping a picture of him and his friend as the complained about how freezing cold it was.
“Baby, c’mon. Come get in!” Harry had shouted back to his girlfriend on the dry land, “I need some warmth, s’freezing!”
YN grimaces, just in Harry’s shirt and a pair of yoga shorts, dipping her toe in and shaking her head - “I’ll enjoy from here!”
“Please, bug,” He pouts, motioning for her to come in.
She does after a moment, squealing at the temperature before quickly finding her way into Harry’s arms.
“Only have fun on tour when y’with me,” He had murmured into her ear before he dunked her underwater and they play fought until their stomachs hurt from laughing.
And then came the notorious picture that had gotten a million likes in thirteen minutes, oh, the chicago ice bath.
Harry had been achey since tour had begun, constantly complaining about his back and ankles from the shows.
“Baby, just rub m’back a lil’ longer please?” He had whimpered the night before, the tour bus bed did not help him much at all.
When his trainer had recommended an ice bath immediately after the show - YN had made sure to arrange it despite his protests.
After exiting the stage in his black and lilac outfit, he’d been lured into the bathroom with a promise of sex but instead was a steel tub filled with ice water.
Jeff, Lambert, Tommy - everyone was watching on in amusement as he adamantly tried to deny that it would help and the peer pressure wasn’t make him anymore convinced.
“Alright, everyone out,” YN had finally tittered, shooing out the circus before closing the door for privacy.
She helps strip her husband out of his close as he looks at her reproachfully, “You promised me sex.”
“After,” YN assures him, kissing his puffy lips and asking softly, “Just try it, if it doesn’t work - you don’t have to do it again.”
He grumbles a bit, muttering, “Don’t look at m’bits, they’re gonna shrivel up.”
YN giggles, “As if I haven’t seen your bits in every shape and form.”
As he slips in, YN has to snap a picture of his eyes wide and lips pursed at the shock of the freezing water cooling down his hot, sticky skin.
“Holy fucking shit,” Harry hisses, lowering self until he’s sat - his nipples instantly hardening and he’s breathing roughly out of his nose.
“Five minutes, I’ll set the timer,” YN says, setting it on her phone before sitting down next to the tub as he tries to relax.
“Baby, fuck. Reminds me of that really cold lake in Boston, ‘member?” He squeezes his eyes shut and reaches until YN intertwines their hands.
“Yeah, that wasn’t as cold as that one time you convince me to skinny dip with you on the coast of france.”
“Oh yeah, that one was really fucking cold too,” Harry murmurs, keeping his eyes closed and steadying his breathing.
(During WWA tour - ***)
“Harry, are you insane? Anyone could see us? Paul could walk out or the boys. I’m not-“
She’s cut off when Harry shucks off his swimsuit bottoms, his skin’s glowing in the moonlight and the light waves lapping at the shore are soothing.
YN swallows harshly, tries not to stare at how handsome and overwhelming beautiful he is as he turns to step towards the water.
She looks over her shoulder nervously before stepping out of her one-piece, he waits for her at the shoreline.
“Y’so so stunnin’,” Harry tells her, thumbing at the soft curve of her breast and leaning in for a soft kiss when he feed her shake.
“You could have anyone,” YN whispers against his lips, “Every girl on this earth wants you like this. I’m just some girl from before all this,” she motions to the extravagant bungalow they’re staying at.
“I don’t know why y’think tha’s bad. I want t’experience all this with you, m’first love and m’only love. I’m going to marry y’soon, you know tha’?” He replies, lips tracing the curve of her neck.
“You better,” She giggles, hands going to his shoulder as he sucks a mark into the thin skin.
He pulls back with a frown, “M’not jokin’, I don’t care that we’re young - M’gonna do it.”
“I can’t wait,” YN kisses his jutted out lip, squealing when he tugs her into the water and the chilled waves crash against her hips, “H, it’s so cold.”
“M’gonna keep y’warm, hush up,” He titters, pulling her into his chest until her breasts are smushed against his strong pecs and his arms are around her shoulder, “Love experiencing this w’you, everythin’ w’you.”
-
YN is brought back from her daydream by her husband wiping his finger under her eyelid, “Darling, wha’ is it?”
She hadn’t realized she had teared up thinking of the fond memory, “I want to go back to that bungalow. We had such a good time. I…I just love you.”
His wife chuckles like she’s pathetic for crying about it but he leans out of the tub, cupping her jaw and pulling her in for a hard kiss.
“Don’t be embarrassed, flower,” There was no teasing in his voice, it was sincere, “If anyone should be embarrassed - I’m the one who travels around the world t’sing love songs ‘bout you.”
Their lips join again, his tongue finding its way into her mouth when Jeff, Lambert, and Tommy barge through the door.
“Jesus Christ, only you could be trying to get some while sat in an ice bath,” Jeff scoffs with a smile but instantly knows they’ve fucked up.
“Get out, the fuck?” Harry sits up, “Don’t interrupt me and m’wife. Get out!”
They stumble out and just then the alarm goes off.
YN helps him out, tucking him into a towel and helping him dry off - his head tucked into her neck and hand on her belly - massaging.
“Do you feel any better?” She hums while getting some stray droplets on the nape of his neck as he nuzzles into her warm skin.
“Mm,” He agrees drowsily, hand slipping under her shirt for more heat and she jumps at his icey touch, “Want t’sleep.”
And when they get to the hotel, YN logs onto his Instagram and uploads the ice bath pictures with nobody knowing the story behind it.
-
Hope you enjoyed!

French musicals recs (aka my previous special interests listed in one post)
Actually I wanted to make a post a while ago, since there're some nice musicals that mostly go unnoticed by tumblr even though they are really cool (and have a DVD records)! Before I start I wanna say that these are very different from what Broadway or West End usually stages, so I advise you to just relax and enjoy without purposefully comparing the two together. I bet this gonna be a pretty big post, so clock on "read more"! @machine-without-feelings, hope you'll have fun!
I'm a little extra so it took quite some time to write, so please join me in my weird interest leave a like/rb. Under the read more you'll find:
1) My excited rambles
2) Links to these musicals (proshots with English subs)
3) Some songs to vibe check whether it's something you'd enjoy listening or not
1) Notre-Dame de Paris! Gonna start with this one since it was one of the main reasons I've started to learn French. There was a time where I would watch it every single day. I probably watched it a millions of times by now and was obsessed with it for a good couple of years.
About: What can I say? It's a Hunchback of Notre Dame adaptation that sadly usually goes overlooked when English speakers talk about the book. Which is a shame! Cool French-Canadian cast, good grasp of the original, really nice lyrics and music. Love from the first song for me.
Where to watch: here with English subs, the quality isn't the best, I have a better one on my google drive so you can DM me for link. Plus there're some DVDs of different productions (notably Italian one) just waiting in the internet for free.
Songs recs (to get the vibe of the musical): Actually it's hard to choose, because I love the thing so much, but here're some.
Classic Belle, Le Temps des Cathédrales, Ma Maison C'est Ta Maison, Pretty Guys In Pants In The Background song, Song after which I became Daniel Lavoie fan lmao could add some more but you haven't got all day, just check the whole thing.
Tumblr media
2) Le Petit Prince! I said that I wanna promote it and I will. As I said earlier I really liked Daniel Lavoie (aka the guy who played Frollo) and here he plays the pilot!
About: A very very very good adaptation of The Little Prince book. Literally quotes the book in most songs. The music is written by the same composer as NDDP, so it's good. The set and costume design is amazing! It's very colourful and inspired by author's illustrations. I cry each time I watch it cos it gives me FEELS. Also a good musical for beginner French learners imo, not as hard as NDDP, can be an addition to reading the original book. Wholeheartedly recommend, it's criminally underrated.
Where to watch: There's a playlist with English subs, French subs are also to be found on YouTube if you want them.
Songs: Dédicace, C'est un chapeau, Apprivoise-moi.
Tumblr media
3) Well, cannot avoid mentionning Roméo et Juliette. Kinda a classic, to be fair. Was probably the 2nd French musical I've heard. More active in terms of music, some tunes gonna stuck in your head for days.
About: Well, it's obvious from the name. Kinda cool actually? Weird in some places but not in a bad way. Good musical to have a fun time (well. at least act 1 is fun, right?). The costumes are a bit cheesy, but that's not important. Still sad the pandemic ruined its tour I hope to see it live one day.
Where to watch: Actually it has two DVDs of different versions from different productions. Some songs changed, I vibe with the earlier version more, but the newer one is nice too.
Songs: Oh these slap, haut my mind since the second I first heard them. Kinda pop. But not that boring pop that modern French musicals have, it kinda has its style. Here're some of my favs: Vérone, Les Rois Du Monde, Aimer (aka the song I can listen for hours).
Tumblr media
4) Starmania. Speaking about classic. To be fair, never watched it, only listened to the albums, but I mean it's still looks more like a concert.
About: deppressive cyberpunk and anti-utopia. A lit of bandits. Evil capitalist included. A classic. If you were interested in French songs you've probably heard some of these multiple times.
Where to watch: here
Songs: SOS d'un terrien en detresse, Le Monde Est Stone, Le Blues Du Businessman
Tumblr media
5) Le Roi Soleil. Ok, I cannot explain why I like this one. Can't say I was obsessed with it, but I liked it a lot. I like the songs, enjoy relistening from time to time.
About: Louis 14. That's it, that's the musical. Kinda about his romantic relationships and king issues. A bit about La Fronde. But mostly about romance, lmao.
Where to watch: boop
Songs: Être à l'hauteur, Contre Ceux D'un Haut, Un Geste De Vous.
Tumblr media
6) Mozart L'Opéra Rock. Was kinda hesistant to add it to the list because I mostly wanted to mention least well-know stuff and it feels to me that Mozart is kinda hype-ish? But I got that it may be not so well-known for the English speakers and it's worth checking out!
About: Well it's about Mozart and it's rock! The songs slap! probably will get in your head and you gonna whistle Le Bien Qui Fait Mal or something. Also Mozart and Salieri are pretty gay.
Where to watch: here! and the quality is great!
Songs: L'Assasymphonie, Place je Passe, J'accuse mon père, Bim Bam Bim Boum
Tumblr media
Ok, I'll stop there cos this post took me a few hours to write, I could have added some other musicals, but I guess I need to rewatch them first, cos I barely remember them.

Changes: or to take the higher ground before it's too late
I'm going to be real here folks, I cry ugly tears to this song. Bad.
Changes is a song on Cam's album "The Otherside". It's country, it's folk and it's an album a bit influenced by changes in Cam's life (a change of label, personal life). She collaborated with Harry on the song Changes, as she opened for him on a venue and was already working with Tyler Johnson.
From what I gathered: Harry sent her the demo of the song, implying he made most of the writing on this one. What I'm basing this claim on is her interview for Rolling Stones (read it here):
I heard [the demo] and was just like, “Oh, this ache to outgrow something that you don’t want to outgrow!” It felt so good. I normally don’t take outside songs [...]
‼️DISCLAIMER‼️when analysing this song, I'm gonna go from the idea of it being written with a queer mindset (how surprising of me). Cam rendered the song beautifully and it is very much her own, but I believe Harry's input is consequential. After all that's his lil whistle and cute fishsona in the MV.
Sad queer analysis ahead.
Tumblr media
Let's analyse the lyrics first:
There is a town
Somewhere down a country road
The speaker describes the town to us, from memory, from experience. "There it is, down the road, can you picture it ?"
I see it now
I take it everywhere I go
The speaker doesn't currently live in the town, they're on the move (nice throwback to the coutry road). But despite all the travelling, they realize the sedentary smalltown never leaves them. It's part of them. It left a mark on them.
The river sways, I can almost hear it now
As if to say, "You're not the only one who wants a way out"
The town is so real to the speaker they can sense it, eyes and ears. But it gets a bit dark: the river sways like it's trying to leave its bed. The river is envious of the speaker who managed to leave. The town is so toxic even nature wants to get away from it. Or the speaker resents the town so bad that they project their own resentment on the river.
So, I go
'Cause I don't wanna feel like I don't know you anymore
I memorize those roads
This is the call for the speaker to leave for good. Their motive doesn't seem to be ambitious or anything grand. They leave because they apprehend a feeling. Apprehending a feeling, something that may not even happen, is the way of an anxious person. Anxiety is the motive of their departure. However, they still memorize the roads leading to the town, just in case. Perhaps one day they'll come back.
Somewhere out in the big wild country
Someone's fallin' in love in a backseat
Givin' it away
Like their hearts won't ever break
Suddenly it's about love ! Young love, one that is lived in the small compartment of a car, somewhere hidden and safe in the big wild country. As if the countryside was unexplored and threatening.
God bless the young hearts sippin' cheap wine
Gettin' drunk with their friends for the first time
Thinkin' nothing's gonna change
'Til everything changes
The speaker looks at the youth with tenderness, wishing them the best. But once again, they're not in the town in the present time, they don't see the youngsters fooling around, they can only guess from first-hand experience. And it's very specific: falling in love, getting drunk with friends and thinking everything's gonna be easy like that forever until it's not and heartbreak ensues.
From there I hop in with the raw queer theme of those lyrics. It started by falling in love and it ended up in a heartbreak. In between, the speaker got drunk for the first time with their friends, people they trusted enough to let go a little, but in the end everything changed. Why ? Alcohol makes you forget about code of conduct, how you're supposed to behave. It makes you say or do things you might not have done sober.
We can interprete this chorus as the beginning of the end for the speaker. It's the only part of the song evocating the past, and it's fun and easy, but it's also where things started to get bad the way they are in the present. Something might have happened that first time the speaker got drunk and it marked the end of innocence and careless childhood, and it probably has to do with love as no other factor is provided apart from falling in love and heartbreak.
They never leave
They're all havin' babies now
Watchin' daytime TV
Livin' off the gossip of a cruel small town
They. With Harry, it's always You, Me, and They. They are having babies, all of them, like it's not a very difficult thing to do, it's just natural. They have the leisure of the day, not a thing to worry about, if not gossip. It's not implied anymore, the small town is downright cruel. Gossip fuels it, but on behalf of someone else, and that someone is most definitely the speaker who left and who describes its inhabitants in the most mundane way, perhaps with a hint of contempt. The speaker seems bitter.
So, I go
'Cause I don't wanna feel like you don't know me anymore
Don't recognize my face
Reprise of the pre-chorus except now, the speaker provides another reason for their departure. Not only they feared they wouldn't know the town anymore, they also feared being seen as a stranger. It's not like the speaker actually changed physically: but it might as well feel like it. Again, apprehension, anguish. As implied in the chorus, things changed to the point where the speaker feels they would seem like a whole another person to the rest of the town, a stranger, a threat to the integrity of the conservatives. So they leave before this shift in perception can happen.
There ain't nothing here for me anymore
They say they don't hear from me anymore
And I don't wanna hear it anymore
The town is not outwardly hostile. It's still the town that saw the speaker as a kid. The town doesn't understand why the speaker left, but the speaker won't give in and get in touch. They want to be as far away as possible, until they don't hear the questions, the river, everything. It's almost like the speaker doesn't carry the town in their heart at all. They want to forget it all, and it hurts everytime the town tries to lure them back in. The way Cam sings it is painful to me man
Somewhere out in the big wild country
I was fallin' in love in a backseat
Givin' it away
Like my heart won't ever break
Had such a young heart sippin' cheap wine
Gettin' drunk with my friends for the first time
Thinkin' nothing's gonna change
'Til everything changes
Yeah, just the confirmation of the chorus being the speaker's experience. I went ahead and assumed it was already lol but it's like a plot twist effect. It's dramatic. It's a personal song to someone.
TO MAKE IT SHORT to me this song is intense and very in touch with the queer experience. Though it describes a specific situation, it is surprisingly not that detailed or full of metaphors the way Harry often writes: this town could be literally any smalltown in the countryside. The backseat could be the one of any car, cheap wine is something any teen can afford. I like to think Harry wrote it for himself but is also aware so many people went through the same thing, and still will. I have to admit I'm heavily biased writing this, as the experience of a queer kid struggling to find their place in a well settled smalltown is familiar.
GETTING DRUNK AND QUEER IDENTITY is an analogy Harry already used in Fine Line when he sang "We'll get the drinks in so I'll get to thinking of her". To drink is to let go, to unveil the most subconscious aspects of yourself you might not want to deal with otherwise. You don't care about judgement and you get to explore those parts freely. In Changes, this is the last memory they recall before stating the changes and their departure. Perhaps getting drunk for the first time would be when they realized they're queer. Or acted upon it, causing their little world to shake. They chose to leave before it eventually wouldn't feel like a choice anymore. There is no life for people like them in a cruel smalltown.
SMALLTOWN BOY
This song reminds me an awful lot of Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat. The song is about a queer boy having to leave the smalltown where he grew up because of persecutions and no future prospects.
Mother will never understand why you had to leave, Smalltown Boy
They say they don't hear from me anymore, Changes
But the answers you seek will never be found at home, the love that you need will never be found at home
There is nothing here for me anymore
Other people not understanding why they leave. People who can't truly empathize even when they mean no harm. They would never understand the speaker's departure, because those people get to find love and have babies and live a peaceful life in the countryside.
You were the one that they'd talk about around town as they put you down
Livin' off the gossip of a cruel small town
Yeah yeah. I really struggle with just seeing this song as nostalgia when such harsh words are being used. I do believe there is a part of fondness for that town, that countryside setting and the early days. But it's not all tender memories.
CHANGES AND ERODA
Of couuuurse we all noticed the adorable purple fish with the pearl necklace. It represents Harry, no question, as it whistles Harry's part. And of couuuuurse we all made the link with the erodian fish, and some even noticed they formed the bluegreener pair when their colors are inverted.
It makes sense for those fishes to be connected with this interpretation of Changes. Both works are about a small town, lost in the nature, where the people are watching, aware of everything that isn't normal, that is peculiar. The early life of the peculiar boy is similar in every way to the early life of the speaker in Changes. The fish in Adore You grows too big for the island and has to leave, and though Eroda makes amends with the peculiar boy, he leaves as well because his future, his fulfilment, is somewhere else. So does the speaker in Changes.
IN CONCLUSION
The more I write posts like this, the more endeared I am by Harry's world. How Harry writes for himself, but also for other people with songs like this. How nature finds its way in all that he does. How grounded he is, how he doesn't seem to forget where he came from. It really is such a rare thing to see in a mainstream popstar's writing and art. How can someone say he sold his soul to LA is beyond me
