GHOST BUSTERS
FratBoys! BTS x Comatose! Reader
Main mlist. Previous chapter.
Synopsis
You get into a freak accident and wake up to your body surrounded by seven crying men. Or your unrequited love doesn’t seem so unrequited after all.
Chapter warnings
Minor cussing, Implied self deprecration but very slight
Chapter Rating: T (For Teen Audiences and Up)
Chapter 4: The Fairy Godmother
FLASHBACK
Twiddling your thumbs inconspicuously wasn't such a good idea after all as your employer's sharp gaze pierces you right in your jaded soul.
You didn't mean to sound so cynical and judging from his tells, Eugene wasn't too happy with you, or at least with how you viewed yourself.
His manicured nails beckon you forward and you gulp, eyes darting to the pile in front of you-- Eugene Lee Yang, tarot master and occultist, absolutely hated it when his readings were disrupted but once you came in through his door looking for all the whole disgusting world like a damned drenched train wreck, eyes bugging out with tears leaking to your puffy cheeks, he pauses, red lips pinched looking for an explanation which you give.
You fidget in your seat by his raglan couch, the sign by the door right below the Yin Yang Quatro's flashy neon label saying 'Closed for business', as you silently try to assess a quick look at the spread laid out on the table.
One death card and two other major arcana.
Whoever the client was, the universe was basically telling him or her to fuck off from the situation and just let things be.
Yikes.
"Baby girl, look at me. " He gripes and you flinch, staring at his kohl rimmed eyes.
Your boss was a very hot man, and if he wasn't gay you would have considered your options but he was happily married to a wonderful husband and you were stupidly in love with the seven banes of your existence.
Hence the tears.
"So you're telling me, that those stupid boys left you to fend for yourself while you were sick in bed?" He hums when you nod your assent meekly, sharp jaw twitching with annoyance as his fingers tap lightly over his silk jacket. "Were they aware?"
You shake your head, "I mean I did send them a text but I was left on read. Maybe they were just busy or something. "
Eugene snaps his narrowed gaze to you and you gulp. "Huh. Busy. So you were seriously completely alone?"
Another shake of the head. "Some friends took care of me back at my own apartment so..." You trail off unsure if throwing Taemin into the mix with his consent was okay.
Eugene may be fairly strict with the shop rules but when it came to his employees, you in particular, he was an overprotective mama bear and anyone--rather, any man's name mentioned by you was automatically on his watch list.
Your boss pretends to ignore the friend part for a moment, "I see. And you don't think you deserve any of their attention when you've been nothing but a good friend and room mate to them?"
"That's not--"
Eugene holds a hand up to shush you. "Not yet done speaking, doll." He sighs. "YN, you know I despise little girls without any backbone. What, you don't think you're beautiful enough to be appreciated by a bunch of fuckboys? Bitch, you don't need them. You don't need their attitude. You're a queen. Act like it. " He sniffs daintily.
You give him a watery giggle and he smirks.
"Besides, if they so much as leave you high and dry one of these days, I will go to your house and castrate them inch by fucking inch."
Nothing could compare to an angry Yang boss.
END OF FLASHBACK
"Who the fuck are you?" The Beta Tau Sigma member frowns, arms tightening around you as his brothers close in forming a protective ring around the both of you and your physical body peacefully settled on the hospital bed.
The visitor merely raises a perfect, delicate brow, canine teeth bared for a moment only to recede when his irises pierce yours, and as if a magnetic pull traps you, you subconsciously fly--float to the stranger. " Eugene!" You bleat happily, arms looping around the man's lean shoulders.
Today he was wearing a baby blue silk coat and long skirt, looking for all the world like a top runway model. His red lips land on your hairline. "Hello, doll." He coos and everyone, the Min included, stands stock still as the dress you had been wearing shimmers in the light like an ethereal pixie.
"Holy shit. Was that YN?!" Jeongguk, the wide eyed buck that he was furiously looks to the space where you presumably stood and back to your body with mild hysterics until one of his hyung's, Seokjin was it, lightly knocks him upside the head.
"But hyung she just--"
Seokjin frowns. "Yes we all saw. It's just...difficult to wrap our heads around the thought that two YNs are here. "
Jimin, having had dried his tears long ago speaks up with a much clearer voice directed at Eugene. "I'm sorry, but we've known YN since we were kids and I'm afraid we haven't seen you around before...sir?" He hesitates contemplating whether he was using the correct gender noun.
A sharp laugh echoes within the cramped space of the hospital room, and the boys shift awkwardly, some seeming anxious at the tone the other man had taken.
You let go of your boss and reluctantly float back to the others, Yoongi snatching you up to his side, pushing you behind him with a grim stare at the newcomer.
You remember that Eugene isn't dangerous to you.
But Eugene Lee Yang was dangerous to those he disliked.
And it appears your boys weren't faring well in that department.
So with a grimace, you stick closer to Yoongi, ready to tug him just in case your boss decides to chuck his expensive shoes against someone's head in his wrathful wake.
Of course he would be mad.
You couldn't count the number of times he'd witnessed you cry over these men you were now trying to cover for.
With all the lip chewing you were immersed in, someone addresses the huge elephant rearing its trunk over all of you.
"That question aside, what is happening here--uh, sir?" Hoseok is quick to beat his brothers to the punch, although quite warily.
He wasn't going to be disrespectful to possibly the only person who could give a fucking explanation to everything. He had a gut feeling that whoever this man was, was someone who could help YN and he wasn't taking any chances just so YN can recover fast.
He didn't think he could live another week without being blessed with your lovely smile.
He actually fucking missed you already even if you were right here in spirit.
Eugene quirks a brow but his lips curl up in a genuine smile directed at the resident sunshine, and although he knew that all of them contributed to a majority of YN's sadness, this Hoseok was the least guilty from what he's heard so far.
"Jung Hoseok I presume?" Eugene asks and the boy stammers out an affirmative response. "Charmed. Yes, well. Before I answer any of your questions, YN if you would?" He gestures to you and you reach for him despite Yoongi's quiet protest.
He didn't like you leaving him for some other man no matter who they are.
Two things happen simultaneously as soon as you touch the Yang boss's hands.
You feel a heavy weight settle over you, as if you were being pulled down by gravity.
And then your bare foot touches the hard, cold, bleached tiles one after the other and you shiver with a soft squeak.
"HOLY SHIT YN?!"
A chorus of quaky gasps fill the air and then you are swept up into the nearest person's arms, this time Taehyung's.
You turn your smooshed cheeks from your holder and shoot a glance at the Yang boss with pure joy. "H-how?"
Eugene smiles at you gently. But then he sighs, the shadows appearing on his face aging him for a bit, a tick in his jaw forms and he rolls his eyes. "Doll, you know I'm magical. But that's beside the point. " He sharply claps his hands garnering command at everyone's undivided scrutiny.
Eugene was like that. Commanding with his presence at every turn.
"Gentlemen, if you could, I would love to be invited to your home as we have much to talk about as regards YN's current...state. "
Namjoon, ever the leader steps forward almost in an unconscious manner as if to assert his dominance, "As long as it will help YN, we are willing to do anything. "
Unexpectedly, the Yang boss doesn't laugh, doesn't mock them, only considers them for a moment and then looks at you. "I can see what you meant, darling." You flush for some reason and they all turn to look at you but your boss clears his throat, and straightens. "We don't have the luxury to waste any more time. For YN's sake, I suggest we go now. Because as of this moment, I am your fairy godmother and she's Cinderella. Once the clock strikes midnight, it's poof. If you catch my drift."
Faces pale at the insinuation.
Well shit.

Q: Why is the "Nimona" movie so important?
Well, I really think that we are living in a time where the conversation about real people's lives and their safety and a community's entire longevity, particularly within the queer umbrella, there's a lot at stake.
And I mean that in a way where people are refusing to have the next step in understanding someone who might disagree with them.
My whole life has been taking the extra steps to outreach to bring someone, to build the foundation to have a common understanding. Or at the very least, so that that group doesn't want my group to be eliminated or erased.
And having films especially like "Nimona," where it can speak to this idea of effortlessly portraying characters who inhabit those communities. But are also fully realized. (...)
It's just an honest story. And it's full of like wonderful character, heart and insight and dynamics that feel like they could be both a part of anyone's experience, but specifically really a part of my experience as a queer person.

Lots of comments on how Ned wasn't a big loss, how the guys have clearly moved on and feel more free and unburdened, how they obviously had issues with Ned before all this, etc. And I agree! But it's also important to keep in mind just how huge of a betrayal this was for them. They may have had issues with Ned even before the scandal, but remember, Ned was still their friend, and someone they worked with for a long time who they thought they could trust. I love how they're making it their mission to bounce back and come back better than ever, but this wasn't some "oh well, too bad about Ned, now then let's move on." This was devastating to them, and I don't ever want to take for granted how painful this has been for Eugene, Zac, and Keith, despite Ned's departure ultimately being for the better.

Ok, but can we talk about Jae and his adult model? Because while I wouldn’t call it the worst (I think this title still has to go to Merula “I-have-bird-droppings-in-my-hair” Snyde), it’s just so… boring.
Tumblr media
First of all, I hate that his hair looks shorter and neater. His current hairstyle looks way better, but also fits his personality, in my opinion, and the whole vibe of “always tired, always asleep in classes, not quite knowing what’s going on”. But even that aside, JC’s design is just… meh? If you ask me, Adult Jae looks like he finally decided to mature and stabilise – and he’s very unhappy about it. And in a way, it’s a bit funny because I actually had that idea a while ago that Jae gets married during the Second Wizarding World, but they quickly get divorced because his wife basically wants that regular “boring” life.
But either way, this is what I’d probably do myself:
Most importantly, I think we should keep in mind two things about Jae: 1) he likes to appear cool, 2) he comes from a rather poor family that probably still struggles with money (as we know he sends his mum money even when he’s still at school). Now, for this discussion and my version of Jae, I’m gonna assume that he will get a pretty good job affter graduation (because he’s a smart boy) – therefore, he will make pretty good money, too. I’m certain he’d still support his family, but I imagine he would also want to show through his appearance that now he can afford things. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely can’t see him spending a lot on clothes and whatnot. But at the same time, I think he’d be willing to invest in quality. For example, he’d definitely have a very nice leather jacket that he’d wear like all the time. He could also invest in some more expensive accessories like a watch or shoes. Oh, and I absolutely love the idea of including his red bandana in his adult outfit!
Also, the idea of Jae with the bandana actually makes me think of Eugene Lee Yang – and no, not just because he’s also Korean. And yes, I know Eugene is an absolute fashion icon, and I don’t think it’d fully work for Jae… But on the other hand, I feel like some of Eugene’s more casual outfits do work here.

Queer Watcher 2020
I am looking back on this weird, not-so-wonderful year - and on the ways @wearewatcher made my 2020 so much more wonderful. Originally, I wanted to list all the highlights I could think of, but one of the things I am most grateful for is Watcher’s inclusion and support of LGBTQ+ folks. I am just one queer person but I know there are many more in this fandom.
So, this ended up being a list of things I, as a queer person, appreciate and enjoy, and I am so so happy that I can write this. Buckle up, I have Things to say, and it is going to be emotional.
Ryan’s Pride shoes. I sometimes wonder how many sales Converse owes him. I love my own pair btw.
“Look, all I’m sayin’ is, y’know, hey, uh, love everybody.” - Shane Madej, Gangly Puppet Freak. A PSA from the Weird/Wonderful Shakespeare Theatre vid, regarding bisexuality - he is so awkward with it lmao. Whole video has really great vibes too.
Steve/Stephanos.
Various tweets, including wishing us a happy Non-Binary People’s Day and a happy Trans Awareness week.
Ryan and Shane including their pronouns in their twitter bio. (Little things like this don’t go unnoticed, and they are very appreciated.)
Gay Oars! Ugh, my heart. Their first appearance totally caught me off guard, and I haven’t recovered since. (I also causes me no small amount of joy that the most romantic and tragic song of all time is called “Gore on the Shore”.) I could yell about my love for these guys all day. It is a beautiful thing that these characters exist.
Gay Oars, again - I knew they would show up and I still was not prepared. The song made me cry. I haven’t recovered from that one either. I love the progression from the first, tragic song to the second, joyful and loving song. I have so many emotions about these oars, I probably could make an entire list just for them. (Little fun fact: Even though the song made me cry, my first reaction to that episode was to go on tumblr and yell about it excitedly. Like, I was emotional but in an enthusiastic kind of way. The more difficult emotions hit me about four days later, for some reason. And then I sat in my room and cried my eyes out. Like, as much as I like being queer, sometimes it is just damn hard and the pain seems too much and you have been hurt over and over and don’t know if you can ever recover from it. And it is just really good to know that someone cares about your wellbeing as a queer person. Even if you have never spoken to that someone and he does not even know of your existence. And to be honest, I don’t always know how to deal with that. The kindness? The genuine allyship? I have no idea how to handle that, and it simultaneously heals and breaks my heart.)
Every time the words “his boyfriend” were uttered; I am especially thinking of Are You Scared here.
All the fan art Watcher inspired and continues to encourage and to support. There are many great artists in the fandom! And Watcher’s content inspires me to draw and create more myself! How wonderful!
Toxic masculinity who? It is nowhere to be found.
This... special kind of gentle and kind weirdness? It honestly had such a positive impact on me and the way I interact with other people and let them interact with me.
All of the wonderful people Watcher brought in. I am sure they will work with more amazing folks and I am really looking forward to that. Personally, I am hoping to see Eugene Lee Yang at some point. (Would be really happy to see Thomas Sanders too.)
Here’s What You Do. Just the whole podcast. It was such a delight.
I was hesitant to include this because I believe many of us have negative memories attached to it, and it was not a fun time for anyone (including the lovely people at Watcher themselves). But, yes, I am mentioning it: That one HWYD episode and the follow-up. I can only speak for myself, but the follow-up has an incredibly special place in my heart. To me, it is one of the most important videos Watcher has created. I watched it several times, I journaled about it extensively and it made me a better ally. Hell, I even showed it to my mother and one of my siblings (like, the entire video). I know it was a difficult thing to talk about but at this point: A HUGE thank you to Steven, Ryan, Katie and Shane for handling this in an absolutely fantastic way. I feel welcome and seen and appreciated, and in the end all I want is this: For people to genuinely give a shit about me as a queer person.
On a more lighthearted note, I enjoy it way too much that Ryan is able to say “LGBTQ” without stumbling over the letters. It seems like such a tiny thing but it brings me an unholy amount of joy.
The Professor. I don’t want to call him LGBTQ+ because that has not been confirmed as canon but he IS comfortable wearing clothes that are typically seen as “women’s clothing”, and as a trans/non-binary person I am kind of obligated to mention it.
I think I had an out of body experience when Ryan said “Oh thank you baby” to Steven in Too Many Spirits. Then I had to pause the episode to finish laughing. And then they brought it back in the next episode. Bless them.
Every time they/them pronouns were said.
The entire Hatshepsut PH episode. What can I say, I like it when gender norms/expectations/roles are broken. And even if we can’t call Hatshepsut trans by today’s standards, declaring yourself another gender has such power.
Without giving too many details: I had my struggles and problems in the past with Christianity and ~certain~ Christian people, and it is really good (and I mean REALLY good) to see someone whose faith and integrity are so interwoven and who is inspired by his faith to do good things and to do right by people. I obviously only know the things about his belief that Steven decides to put on the internet but what I’ve seen is almost healing to me, in a way. I am very grateful and happy that he is willing to educate others and to keep working on himself. Warms my heart.
The certainty with which these beautiful people call themselves allies.
Just... the general kindness and compassion, and the willingness to listen and to grow. I promise you, we notice and we love you for it.
I could have expanded on all of these points but I tried to keep this short.
And look. I don’t want to put anyone on a pedestal; that would not be fair. I am just immensely grateful for kind people who genuinely care and who genuinely try to do right by others and to bring joy to others.
And I know we like to have fun here but Watcher’s content is just a lot more than entertaining, meme-able fun (although it is that too, of course).
I had a blast with it this year and I am very much looking forward to the next year. I feel like I can’t adequately put into words the myriad of little (and not so little) ways these people have made my life better this year. Thank you from the bottom of my aroace, non-binary heart.

The latest on ISOC's shameful attempt to flog off .ORG to a group of sketchy billionaires: Ethos Capital's promises concerning its stewardship are pure window-dressing.

Its binding promise not to increase prices for .ORG domains? Still allows it to DOUBLE prices in 8 years, then allows UNLIMITED increases afterwards. Its "Stewardship Council"? Handpicked by Ethos's own bagmen, & only empowered to rule on very narrow questions of de-anonymization and censorship, AND Ethos can simply ignore its rulings by declaring them to be required by a government or consistent with anti-abuse policies.
In an open letter in the Nonprofit Times, Cindy Cohn of EFF and Amy Sample Ward of NTEN break it down:

Don't trust Google to build Toronto's Smart City (permalink)
Google is planning to turn a vast swathe of Toronto into a high-tech "smart city" through its Sidewalk Labs division. They've been incredibly misleading and opaque about their plans, and yet the city keeps greenlighting through successive phases.
The latest phase is the publication of the Digital Strategy Advisory Panel's report, a wide-ranging critical report from technologists and tech experts on Google's plan to instrument the city and extract its data.
https://quaysideto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/DSAP-Supplemental-Report-on-Sidewalk-Labs-Digital-Innovation-Appendix-DIA-Appendices-FINAL.pdf
It's pretty sharp stuff. Michael Geist's introductory letter gives a taste of things.
https://quaysideto.ca/blog/dsap-releases-supplemental-commentary-on-the-digital-innovation-appendix
But far more pointed is Andrew Clement's Appendix D, a kind of minority report that makes it abundantly clear that Google has totally disqualified itself from this project.
Question One: Does Sidewalk have a strong track record as an urban innovator appropriate for Toronto?
Short answer: No
(Sidewalk lied, omitted other projects that were terrible, and literally followed a grifter's playbook called "BOLD")
Question Two: Can Sidewalk Labs' core claims be relied on?
Sidewalk "consulted" with 21,000 Torontonians, but it hasn't shown that it's willing to take any of that consultation advice to heart ("corporate self-defense").
Sidewalk claims it's not "tech for tech's sake," but the whole plan reeks of it.
Sidewalk claimed it's not about extracting data, but the plan is totally about extracting data.
Question Three: What does experience with Sidewalk to date in this project indicate about its reliability as a partner? In particular, has Sidewalk respected its contracts and other commitments?
Nope. For example, it held its expert panel to NDAs after promising it wouldn't.
Question Four: Can Sidewalk be treated as independent of its parent Alphabet/Google and its wider enterprise?
Obviously not! "In business strategy, financing and overall managerial control, there are clear indications that Sidewalk is unlikely to diverge from Alphabet/Google."
"Nearly all Alphabet revenues are earned by Google and they have the same CEO, Sundar Pichai, and same CFO, Ruth Porat."
Question Five: What are the risks of partnering with an Alphabet enterprise?
"It has been fined a combined $9.5 billion since 2017 by EU antitrust regulators while facing further significant government investigations for its anti-competitive behaviour."
"It will be challenging to make a positive determination absent public evidence of a thorough, independent risk-benefit analysis of the prospective partnership or other contractual relationship."
Tumblr media
A "girls-only" social service wants to analyze your facial bone structure (permalink)
Well, this is the most "now you've got two problems" moment in recent memory. "Giggle" is an all-girl social network. To be "all-girl" they have keep men off of the platform. How do they do that? With FACIAL BONE STRUCTURE scans.
"It's science! Just like archaeologists do with mummies."
JFC.
The impulse to start a girl-only social space is a potentially fine one, but deploying what amounts to eugenics – heavily borrowed from the incel movement's obsession with facial bone-structure – is idiotic.
"Unfortunately it doesn't verify trans-girls."
No shit. Also, it doesn't verify people whose bone-structure fails your digital phrenology tests. And it WILL verify men and boys who generate false positives in the system.
https://pipedreamdragon.tumblr.com/post/611048332070109184
I can't believe I need to say this, but: The goal of making girls feel OK with who they are cannot be attained by subjecting their facial bone-structure to algorithmic femininity assessments.
Tumblr media
Norman Rockwell turned into a radical civil rights activist (permalink)
I hadn't known that at the end of his career, Norman Rockwell became a political radical, breaking with the Saturday Evening Post over his desire to depict the civil rights struggle.
https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2020/2/19/21052356/norman-rockwell-the-problem-we-all-live-with-saturday-evening-post
Writing in Vox, Tom Carson describes how Rockwell's personal tragedies – the death of his wife – and the advice of his therapist helped him transform into an acerbic, radical painter, the opposite of who we remember him as.
Switching from the Post to Look Magazine, Rockwell depicted such subjects as 6-y-o Ruby Bridges being escorted into an all-white school by federal marshalls who led her past howling mobs of white supremacists.
He went on to paint a depiction of the imagined last moments of civil rights workers Mickey Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney, who were tortured and murdered by white nationalists.
http://www.nrm.org/MT/text/MurderMississippi.html
A staunch anti-war activist, he pestered LBJ with an endless stream of telegrams demanding negotiations, not bombings, in Vietnam (ironically, he voted for Nixon in the hopes that he would end the war).
Further irony: the last substantial painting he completed was of Nixon after his election win: "This time around, he managed what he'd once said was impossible. His subject looks like a nice man who is, nonetheless, unmistakably Richard Nixon."
It's the only Rockwell painting in the National Portrait Gallery.

Tumblr media
Gmail's filters are blocking opt-in election emails (permalink)
Gmail's spam filters perform very differently when it comes to fundraising emails from Democratic leadership contenders: Mayo Pete evades filters 63% of the time, Yang lands 46% of the time. EVERY Warren campaign email tested got filtered to spam.
https://themarkup.org/google-the-giant/2020/02/26/wheres-my-email
These are all emails that Gmail users have opted to receive, too, but most are filtered to the "promotions" inbox, rather than "primary." In all only 11% of emails from "candidates, think tanks, advocacy groups, and nonprofits" reached primary.
It's turning email — the last federated platform on the internet — into Facebook, a filternet whose rules are set by unaccountable algorithms operated by a secretive monopolist.
Goog has a conflict of interest here: "While Gmail does not sell ads in the primary inbox, advertisers can pay for top placement in the social and promotions tabs in free accounts."
This was Facebook's media-killing strategy: when you started your media outlet's FB presence, the company delivered 100% of your posts to your followers, then, once you depended on that, it dialed delivery down unless you paid for "reach."
The pretense of Big Tech is that you they connect you to the stuff you ask for (this is also the premise behind Net Neutrality). The reality is that they decide, unaccountably, invisibly and inexplicably, what you may see.
While the overfiltering might in error, it's an error Goog is incentivized to wontfix: "'You're not precluded from buying an ad in the promotions tab, or offering a deal,' said Lee Carosi Dunn, who at the time led election sales, political outreach and policy for Google."

That means all kinds of good stuff, but one of the highlights was talking with Shelagh Rogers for The Next Chapter. I grew up listening to Shelagh, and she's so incredibly smart about books.
The interview came out great! (How could it not, given the interviewer). We ranged widely over "Canadianness," "Americanness," literary forms, anxiety and creativity, and the substance of the stories themselves.

Neoliberalism kills, a play in two acts
Act I: UK employers are not required to offer sick pay to asymptomatic potential coronavirus carriers, even if those workers' doctors have ordered them to "self-isolate" to avoid spreading pandemic.

Leaving workers with a stark choice: perform your duty to the public health and lose your wages or even your job, or turn up for work and infect your co-workers and customers.

Act II: Alex Azar, the US Health and Human Services secretary, has ruled out price controls for a coronavirus vaccine, arguing that pharma companies need "incentives" to produce.

This former pharma lobbyist, whose industry gobbles public subsidies like a tweaker gobbles bennies, firmly believes that his once-and-future paymasters must be permitted unlimited gouging, and if they choose to leave those who can't pay to die, that's "the market."
Lambert Strether, 2014:
"I propose two simple rules to which neo-liberalism can be reduced. They are:
"Rule #1: Because markets.
"Rule #2: Go die!"

It turns out that all those people who thought late-stage capitalism would exterminate the human race through climate change were wrong! It's going to kill us all with pandemics, instead.
Herd immunity has a well-known leftist bias.

Venezuelan women's "army" break into dead factories to reboot them (permalink)
The "Productive Army" is a Venezuelan women's collective that has been operating since 2017. They visit shuttered factories, get workers to explain what's needed to reopen them, break in and start them up again.
https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.elsaltodiario.com%2Fmapas%2Fbatallas-ejercito-productivo-obrero-venezuela-guerra-no-convencional
They organize themselves like military units, with captains, etc, and the units generally have to beg their bosses for time off to roam the country, putting it back on its feet. Operations typically run for less than a week, and incorporate weekends to minimize time off.
They describe themselves as carrying out the Chavismo doctrine of "workers' control of factories," which even Chavez largely treated as a slogan, and which his successors have been even less committed to.
They remind me of the elite Chinese students whom Xi ordered to read Marx and Lenin, who then decided Xi was a bourgeois sellout and took to the road to support wildcat workers' strikes against Xi-aligned factory owners.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/28/world/asia/china-maoists-xi-protests.html
The Productive Army's slogan is "Only the People Can Save the People." Its missions are "productive battles." A productive battle might involve repairing the furnace in a sardine canning factory to get it running again, then turning it over to workers: "In the EPO they say that they not only repair machines but, above all, consciences."
One of the crispest definitions of "rightism" came I've heard came from Steven Brust: "Ask them what's more important: property rights, or human rights? If they answer, 'Property rights are human rights," they're on the right." (I quoted this in Walkaway).
When people want the things the factory produces, and workers want to produce those things in the factory, but the spreadsheet says the factory isn't viable, the problem is with the spreadsheet, not the people.

Meet Akil Augustine, voice of the Raptors…and Radicalized (permalink)
In the #CanadaReads national book prize, each book gets a "champion" – a defender who speaks for the book in a series of televised debates. My champion is the incredible Akil Augustine, voice of the Toronto Raptors.
Akil and I met in Toronto last month when they announced that my book Radicalized was a finalist for the prize, and the CBC sat us down for a rollicking joint interview.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duL6rZeNJY0
I love that Radicalized connected with Akil, given how divergent our interests are (I can't even name a single basketball goalie!). I love even more how competitive he is. As someone who grew up at hippie summer-camp playing "co-operative volleyball" I'm very grateful to have a fighter in my corner who plays to win!

36 Questions to Make You Fall in Love
SO my boy Eugene Lee Yang released a video where he answered the 36 first date questions to make you fall in love.  Apparently, the idea of the questions is to create an emotional connection upfront.
(Related: It’s been interesting to see what Youtube/video content creators have come up with to produce content from home during quarantine!).
ANYWAY I thought it was an interesting “get to know you” thing, so I’MMA DO IT TOO below the cut!  It is extremely long.
1. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
I have way too much anxiety to impose on a stranger to this extent, so I’d magically have my friends teleported to my home (pre or post quarantine).
2. Would you like to be famous? In what way?
Fame is a nightmare scenario for me.
3. Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why?
Yes, but only with service providers.  I can and will utterly blank on what I need and what my dang name is when asked, “How can I help you?”
4. What would constitute a "perfect" day for you?
Ha!  Right now, just a day without covid-19.  I miss the outside world.  Even things like browsing a store sound heavenly.
But...  The best days of my life thus far were my Hawaii vacation, especially snorkeling and hiking through a rain forest.  So...  I’d want a day where I wake up early in Hawaii to snorkel and hike, and then drink mai tais and watch the sunset with my husband.
5. When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?
...I sang “Let’s All Sing Like the Birdies Sing” in the shower today...
6. If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want?
Oh, yikes, my mind.  My mother’s father started degrading from Alzheimer’s when I was about 10.
(I’m assuming this refers to having a healthy mind throughout your life, and not remaining frozen in your 30-year-old mindset/experience set).
7. Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?
No, not at all.  Definitely hoping it’s not Alzheimer’s related.
8. Name three things you and your partner appear to have in common.
Well, I assume you and I both love Digimon!
As for my husband, we’re alike in habits and hobbies, but different in personality.  We’re both introverted homebodies who love video games/nerd stuff in general/learning.  We also highly value security, so we tend to work hard and save.  I’d say we’re both grounded and reasonable, although I’m the more emotional one.
9. For what in your life do you feel most grateful?
This is too hard!  I’m constantly feeling so grateful.  I love existing as me!  I seem to have a strong sense of self, and of where I stand, and that’s so dope.  I’m also intensely grateful for my husband, who is so generous with his love and affection and care.  And I’m glad that I found a career that suits me so well.
10. If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?
Er.
I had a difficult childhood.  It’s hard, because my Mom loves me and my brother and sacrificed so much for us...  But she (and all of our relatives) failed to protect me from my father’s various flavors of abuse.  We were both also under a ton of pressure to excel academically.
Still, I can’t change the past.  I’d rather donate to women’s shelters and resources for people dealing with abuse at home.
11. Take four minutes and tell your partner your life story in as much detail as possible.
Let me bullet point it:
-Spent most of my time from 6 months old to 2 years old in a body cast because my hip wasn’t in the socket, and my muscles developed around it like that.  Went to tons of physical therapy.
-Drew comics when I was 3 and 4 because I needed to get ideas out, such as they were, but I couldn’t write yet.
-I love cats, and have had at least one since I was five.
-My home situation was rough.  I started trying to plan how to get out and be independent early and have been working and saving since I was 16.
-Interests/hobbies: animals, singing, nature, science, books, music, writing, video games, art, baking
-Met and started dating my husband at age 14.  We’re blissfully married.
-First job was at an aquarium.  Worked summers at a biotech firm during college.  I’ve been working in biotech since I graduated.  I currently research immunotherapies.  I have a B.S. in biology.
-I have general anxiety disorder and see a therapist every other week.  Therapy has been amazing, A+ would recommend.
-I’m an asexual cis lady
-I need to read and write to stay sane.  Reading connects my mind to other minds, which helps me grow, understand, and think.  Writing releases the pressure that builds up in my brain.
-I’m introverted, but friendly.  Also, I’m an enormous dork.
12. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?
Teleportation
13. If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know?
No, thanks.  I realize the point is to share information about myself through my response, but...  This just isn’t how humans are meant to live.  We’re supposed to discover our way and forge our futures, not have answers magically handed to us.
14. Is there something that you've dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven't you done it?
...Sigh.  My husband and I have dreamed of visiting Japan since we were teens.  We were just starting to plan the trip when covid-19 hit.  Thankfully, we hadn’t booked anything yet.
15. What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?
Being me, being happy, whole, fulfilled, and confident.  There’s no one magic accomplishment that makes everything “worth it” or makes me feel like I “made it.”
16. What do you value most in a friendship?
Oh, oh, oh, there’s a lot to this!  Obviously, a friend needs to be kind (you don’t want to spend time with a jerk), but they also need to be emotionally mature (lending a kind ear is good, but functioning as a therapist for a friend is exhausting).  But it’s the best if a friend has both of those things, but also is interesting in some way.  Like... maybe they’re funny, or charismatic, or share your hobbies.  And it’s a great feeling when a friend reaches out to you and makes time for you now and then; it’s a vulnerable feeling to always be the one to reach out.
17. What is your most treasured memory?
My first kiss, which was with my husband when we were 15.
Also, my entire trip to Hawaii with my husband.
18. What is your most terrible memory?
I’ll probably go with the time my father called me into his room while I was doing homework- I was probably 16ish?  He told me I’d never be as smart, talented, or successful as my brother, at great length, for no discernible reason.  He said I’d have to work more than twice as hard as him to get by, since I was so deficient.  I still have nightmares where this replays.
19. If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are now living? Why?
I would say that I would quit my job and travel with my husband, but...  You know, covid-19.  I’d want to spend a ton of time with my husband, see as much as I can of the world, and do whatever I can to get details in order and make things as easy on my husband as possible.
20. What does friendship mean to you?
It means that you love someone and actively want them in your life, and you treat them as such.
Life is short, and people only have so much physical and emotional energy.  If you choose to freely and joyfully give it to someone, then that’s a big deal.
21. What roles do love and affection play in your life?
???  Same as anyone else, I’d assume.  People need people, although everyone has different levels of need.  I guess I do tend to avoid casual relationships so I have more energy for my closest relationships.  I’m also extremely independent, so I think my needs are smaller than average.
22. Alternate sharing something you consider a positive characteristic of your partner. Share a total of five items.
I assume that you, reader, are a cutie pie.  Hello!
But let me talk about my husband!  He is wicked smart, always learning for fun, and skilled at logic/reasoning.  He’s also a hard worker, and the head of software development at his company at age 31.  He is sooo shy and terrible at small talk, but I adore that he’s the quiet type, since the world is always so loud.  He’s gentle and loving and kind, and he takes amazing care of me and is constantly looking for ways to do something for me.  And he’s laid back and easy-going, which is so soothing.
23. How close and warm is your family? Do you feel your childhood was happier than most other people's?
No and no.
24. How do you feel about your relationship with your mother?
It’s... complicated.
25. Make three true "we" statements each. For instance, "We are both in this room feeling ... "
WE ALL STAN THE CHOSEN.  We are all excited for the Digimon Reboot to restart.  We all love Koushiro!
26. Complete this sentence: "I wish I had someone with whom I could share ... "
...I want more writing and reading friends.
27. If you were going to become a close friend with your partner, please share what would be important for him or her to know.
I’ve had to explain to a lot of people that, despite being friendly and open, I’m introverted and independent, and a total homebody.  I often find that people want to go to bars with friends, or maybe see movies or go to festivals.  I would rather talk on a video chat while we each do our own thing.  People tend to want too much too fast for my slow, cautious pace.
28. Tell your partner what you like about them; be very honest this time, saying things that you might not say to someone you've just met.
I like that you love Digimon and have somehow managed to read this much of this never-ending thing.  Also, you look cute.
29. Share with your partner an embarrassing moment in your life.
I asked my husband out over the phone when I was 14.  I was sitting on a wooden chair that was far, far older than me.  Because I was so nervous, I was rocking the chair back and forth.
It splintered and broke while I was trying to ask my husband to my school’s homecoming dance, pitching me to the floor in the middle of the most crucial sentence.
30. When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?
Yikes, this is a lot, but I last cried in front of my therapist.  I asked out loud, for the first time, why no one did anything to protect me as a kid and ended up bawling.
I can’t remember the last time I cried alone.  Generally, I go to my husband for support.
31. Tell your partner something that you like about them already.
Your fine, fine taste in blogs.
32. What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?
You know, I’m not sure.  Millennials tend to have fairly dark/nihilistic senses of humor.  I will say that, generally speaking, you should only “punch upward.”  Ie, don’t kick people who are down.  It’s better to joke about the rich than the poor, for example.
33. If you were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would you most regret not having told someone? Why haven't you told them yet?
Sometimes I wish I could articulate some things to my parents, but they wouldn’t hear me, anyway.  I know because I’ve tried.
But my loved ones know I love them, so that’s taken care of.
34. Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be? Why?
The boring and honest answer is my important documents and my computer/external hard drive/charger/cellphone, followed by a fire extinguisher.   But I realize the question is about what physical items I hold dear, so...  Assuming my wedding bands are already on my finger, like always, and that I am wearing my glasses and some clothes, I’d grab my grandmother’s clock.
35. Of all the people in your family, whose death would you find most disturbing? Why?
Jesus Tap-dancing Christ.
My husband’s.  I love him beyond compare.
36. Share a personal problem and ask your partner's advice on how he or she might handle it. Also, ask your partner to reflect back to you how you seem to be feeling about the problem you have chosen.
I’m 31, and I’ve been thinking a lot lately about whether or not I want children.  The trouble is, I feel like my country has gotten so much worse since I’ve been alive, and especially over the last four years (I’m American).  Meanwhile, the environment is deteriorating globally...  Would my child even have clean drinking water when they’re 30 or 40?
Is it ethical to have children under these circumstances?
And this is all before I even address the question of whether or not I want to be a mother, or if I think I would be a good mom!  Yikes.
THAT WAS A LOT, are you still here?  Thanks for reading xD

Too bad Eugene Lee Yang doesn't know the difference between racism and prejudice, maybe one day people will learn to stop throwing around a word that doesnt make sense in day to day interactions.
Sorry for the late response, I don’t have a lot of free time to spend on Tumblr.
Click here to see the post in question.
Plenty of people do use these terms interchangeably and something to also consider is the evolving definition of the word “racism” that follows our evolving understanding of racism.
In this particular case, I would classify the association of disease (or dirtiness) with Asian people as racism. You can also catch COVID-19 from a person of any race or ethnicity.
There is a big difference between taking necessary precautions in this crisis, versus associating all people of Asian appearance with disease/dirtiness.

They’ll Definitely Understand
Eugene Lee Yang - “You smiled and all I could think of for a moment was, ‘oh shit.’”
Word Count: 1,735
Eugene Lee Yang x Reader (The Try Guys)
Prompt Post: (#34)
Requested: By Me again welp
A/N: I recently have a huge crush on Eugene Lee Yang from the Try Guys so I had to write this before I exploded or something. Also female reader POV for this one.
Y/N - Your Name
——
Tumblr media
——
Walking from the canteen with a cup full of grapes you plopped one in your mouth as you returned to the film room. You were helping with The Try Guys and their new video, Ashly asking for extra help to film. Entering the film room the boys were chatting from the other side of the room, taking a break and sipping coffee. Ashly walked up to you tiredly. “Hey Ash, I got some snacks for us. Reenergize us for the meantime.” You said offering her the fruit in the styrofoam cup. “Thank God you’re here Y/N. I really don’t know what I’d do without your help.” She said opening her mouth as Y/N plopped a grape in her mouth. “Here, I’m going to get more food from the canteen. You can go ahead and shoot the next scene with the guys. I’ll be back.” Ashly said with a smile as she carefully handed her camera to you; carefully handing it and putting the safety strap around your neck.
You nodded in agreement as you held the camera in one hand and making sure the camera on the tripod didn’t go in sleep mode during the duration of the break. This video involved The Try Guys with filming, as well as a photo shoot and major editing, that you had the opportunity to help with a big chunk.
As you got the camera to wake up again, you were met with a smiling Eugene. You crooked an eyebrow at him as he stood straight to meet your eyes. “Good one.” You said with a chuckle as you looked down at the camera in your hand and took it off sleep mode. Eugene, walking around the tripod and settling behind you, over-watching what you were doing from behind. His chin gently laying on top of your head. Your short figure feeling engulfed with Eugene’s tall one. A smile crept onto your face, gently letting the camera hang from the strap around your neck. “The view from up there good?” You joked. You felt Eugene laugh as he put his hands on your shoulders. “Definitely. You should try it sometime.” He continued the joke as you shook your head and spun around to face him.
You and Eugene had been dating for almost a month now, and haven’t told any of your friends at work. Both of you agreed that it wasn’t time to reveal it yet, so both of you had to keep it on low for a while. And you had to admit, it was extremely hard to hide when you had the urge to kiss Eugene’s pretty little face when he was doing something adorable or look at him like he’s your everything every time he made you laugh. Especially when hanging around friends and co-workers. Although, you had to admit that sneaking out of plans just to stay at his place seemed reasonable. Almost every day, your friends at Buzzfeed have been making plans with you in it, and it did push you into a pit of guilt when you would always blow them off. You convinced yourself that once everyone knows, it’ll all be forgiven; at least you hoped.
Quickly opening your apartment door, Eugene’s hands fell to your waist, and his lips settled on your neck from behind. His actions slowing you down from removing your key from the key lock to open your door. “Come on,” you said breathlessly as you held onto Eugene’s wrist and lead him in. He quickly shut your door and locked it, as you then wrapped your arms around his neck; greeting him back with a kiss. Returning the kiss, the two of you spun so that he was pinning you against your door and his hands wandered freely at the hem of your skirt. His lips attacking your neck and collarbone, leaving marks everywhere. You softly moaned as you felt his hands settle on your ass. “Jump.” Was all he said and you followed suit—legs wrapped around his waist. “I hope Quinta and Ashly aren’t mad, that I blew them off once, again.” You said between breaths as you let Eugene leave marks on your body, and your legs tightening around him. “They’ll definitely understand, once we show them these marks.” He said quickly and continued. You gave a little chuckle at the thought. ‘I hope.’ You mentally told yourself. Suddenly you felt Eugene harden underneath his jeans and heat pooling down between your legs. You bit your bottom lip as you kissed Eugene on the lips again, letting your hands reach down at his leather belt. He broke the kiss and laid his forehead on yours. You smiled and innocently looked at him. “I love you Y/N.” He said softly. A bright smile painted your face. “I love you too Eugene.” You said as he carried you to your bedroom.
‘They’ll definitely understand.’ A small wave of guilt settled in your stomach from the memory and words from Eugene last night. “You doing anything tonight? I heard that Netflix added the new season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” he said. “I totally would, but, I gotta edit two videos and release them tomorrow morning.” You said with a puppy-dog pout. “We will though, don’t worry.” You said in a hushed whisper and winked at him. Eugene’s face lit up like a child on Christmas. “Oh shit.” You said to yourself, and Eugene catching it. “What?” He curiously asked. His innocent face makes you want to kiss him. “Just, You smiled and all I could think of for a moment was, ‘oh shit.’” You said softly in a loving tone, keeping it to a minimal. Eugene’s cheeks looked blushed as he lightly punched you in the arm as he returned to the rest of the guys.
“God, can’t you guys just tell everyone you’re dating already?” Ashly asked as she suddenly put a hand on your shoulder. You suddenly got startled and quickly whipped your head around to face her. “What?” You said, trying to act innocent and confused. “You and Eugene,” she trailed off and nudged you. “I’m not dating Eugene.” You gave Ashly your best attempt at acting before she gave you a ‘nice-try-Raphael’ look. “Okay, so what? We’re just not ready to tell anyone yet.” You said quietly to her and pulled her off to the side. “So when are you guys going to tell everyone then? I mean, it’s clearly obvious both of you are dating.” She said with a laugh as she lightly munched on a cookie from the canteen. “What do you mean ‘obvious’? I’m doing a pretty good job at keeping it on the down low. Same with Eugene.” You tried to tell Ashly, but she shook her head in disappointment. “Oh, sweet innocent Y/N, I wish you could see it through everyone else’s eyes.” She gave a chuckle as you crooked an eyebrow in honest confusion. Ashly gave you a soft pat on the shoulder as she returned to the tripod.
Eugene coming back to you, shoving his pockets in his dress pants. “Can I talk to you for a moment?” He asked politely. You gave a nod as you followed him outside the filming room. You both stopped at an empty hallway and leaned on the wall. You also had something to talk to him about and you opened your mouth to start. “I think we should tell everyone about us.” You both said in unison. Blinking, you both let out a chuckle at the moment. Great minds think alike. “Who told you?” You asked. “The guys. You?” He asked. “Ashly.” Both of you gave nods, then settling on telling everyone; walking back to the filming room.
As both you and Eugene entered the room Eugene got everyone’s attention. “Everyone, random news announcement, but,” he trailed off, taking a glance at you. You gave a smile and a slight nod as he continued. “Y/N and I are dating.” He revealed (finally) and let his hand hold yours. Both fingers intertwining. “Finally!” Ned yelled in relief, with a smile on his face. “It was so obvious!” Keith yelled out too, giving Ned a high-five. “Yeah, I totally ship you guys,” Zach said excitedly as he gave small claps. Ashly quickly ran out the door to drag Andrew in. “What are you doing?” He asked as she dragged Andrew in with her hand on his wrist. “Winning.” She said. “Say it again,” Ashly asked. Both you and Eugene looked at each other and shrugged. “Y/N and I are dating.” Eugene said simply. “Finally!” A bunch of people yelled in unison. You and Eugene were startled as Steven, Freddie, Kelsey, Ryan, Shane and Sara appeared at the door. “Right?” The three other Try guys said happily behind both you and Eugene. “And that means, Ned and I win Andrew. Hand over the money.” Ashly said as Ned quickly ran over to Ashly, giving her a high-five. “But wait, everyone else bet on this right?” Andrew said to all the people at the door. Ashly looked confused as everyone confessed their bets. Sara, Shane, Steven and Andrew bet that you were going to be the first one to announce it, and Ryan, Freddie, Kelsey, Ashly and Ned bet that Eugene was going to announce it—but Ashly and Andrew had the original bet before they dragged seven more people in it.
“What?” You asked awkwardly as they all exchanged their money to the winning team. “Wait!” Yelled Zach from behind. “When did you start dating?” He asked eagerly. “A little over a month ago.” You answered with a smile. Eugene letting your hand go and making it’s way to your waist. You felt his strong hand gripping your waist gently. “Damn it.” Keith then sighed and took out his wallet, handing Zach $50. “Thank you sir.” He said happily. “You guys are really cute by the way.” Freddie said breaking the awkward ice. Everyone murmured in agreement. “Yeah, I thought Eugene didn’t have feelings and emotions.” Kelsey said with a laugh. “Then call this emotion.” Eugene said as he lifted and spun you and gave you a kiss. Your arms quickly made it’s way around his neck as you passionately kissed him. Both of you departed the kiss with a smile as everyone clapped and happily yelled in unison. ‘They’ll definitely understand’. You thought back at Eugene’s words. He was right after all.

First, I would understand if you tried to make him fem but you keep making him the same character in every fic, you dont change anything in how he acts and about his apperance. (Don't even start abt his trauma bc that is bad written as well) Which is ignorant bc you only have one 'canon' of fem man. There are fem men that dont wear skirts, if you want to be glued to it that bad. Also, you are visibly inserting yourself as Tweek and you are a girl if Im right. That David thing is disgusting, tbh.
1. I keep him about the same in each fic because I’ve experimented a few times with how to write Tweek and have decided I like him how I write him now. There’s nothing wrong with finding a way to write a character. And I do change little things about his appearance. Tiny Dancer he has a tattoo and colored hair. It’s a Rich Man’s World he wears round glasses and skirts because he is allowed to wear “female” clothing
2. I got a lot of shit for writing the trauma, yet no one has seemed to give me decent examples as to why Tweek’s trauma was written so badly in Tiny Dancer. I did a lot of research on how people get over their past traumas. It isn’t healthy to never do anything, so don’t tell me “he’d be to scared to do anything” because that’s unhealthy and not a way to cope with past trauma he wants to move on from
3. Yeah, OF COURSE there are fem men that don’t wear skirts, but Tweek is someone who WEARS SKIRTS IN THIS FIC. An example of A REAL LIFE GAY MAN WHO WEARS SKIRTS CASUALLY is Eugene Lee Yang.
Tumblr media
HE WORE DRAG TO THE STREAMY AWARDS AS HE HOSTED BECAUSE HE WANTED TO AND COULD. and yet, he still wears “masculine” clothes when he chooses to.
4. I am not inserting myself onto Tweek. I don’t have the need to do that nor do I want to insert myself. I write Tweek as more fem because I believe that’s how he’d be when he’s older. Have a little bit of a fucking imagination.
5. how is the Davíd thing rude? Give me examples, please, before accusing me of anything

Eugene Lee Yang
Tumblr media
Eugene Lee yang is part of the Try Guys on YouTube. In almost all videos that he part takes in, if not in all, he manages to incorporate part of his culture, Korean, and his sexuality. He demonstrates that there is no one specific, fixated, way one is.
At times he looks like the person in the picture above, dressed like your 'typical man'. He is competitive, athletic, characteristics that are commonly apply to men.
But he can also looks like this

Eugene Lee Yang is a boyfriend, dog lover, writer, father to cute dogs, son, brother, friend, a boss. Just as he represents different roles in the lives of those that surround him, he himself has many roles that makeup who he is. And regardless of how his physical appearance changes from wearing a full face of make-up to casual jeans and a T-shirt, he is being himself no matter what.

YouTube CEO Says She Consults LGBTQ Creators to Eliminate ‘Bias’
LGBTQ Privilege? YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said the company consults with the LBGTQ community to make sure they don’t feel they are being censored. Wouldn’t it be nice if conservatives had such a seemingly favored group? Wojcicki spoke to Eugene Lee Yang of “The Try Guys” on Dec. 16 regarding YouTube’s harassment policy

2 minutes before I went on stage, I ripped up my speech.
My dad once said…”You have 3 choices. You can either be a doctor, a lawyer, or…a failure.”
I didn’t like any of them. So I wrote in my own answer to that multiple choice question.
I spent 2 days struggling to write my acceptance speech for one of the biggest achievement awards of my life. But…just a couple minutes before I stepped on stage, I ripped it up. I decided to speak from the heart.
To be honored with the Digital Influencer Award in front of so many people I respect and admire – directors, actors, writers, authors, singers, and fellow creators I’ve watched for so many years – my body was shaking, my heart was racing, but my soul was flying.
Choosing to follow my passion was scary. I tried to ignore it, but as the days passed on, my heart became more hollow, more fragile, and more lost. I wanted badly to make my parents happy, but I didn’t know how it would be possible if I wanted to be fulfilled too. There were times I even thought of ending it all…
Eventually, my soul couldn’t take it anymore…so I took a risk…on myself, on my family, and on my future. I dropped out of Organic Chemistry, sabotaged my perfect Pre-Med record, and followed my heart to where I am today.
If you grew up Asian American, you’ve probably heard this story. Maybe you ARE this story. Perhaps you’re still trying to figure out YOUR story.
My parents gave me an extremely rough time growing up, but I owe it to them for igniting this INTENSE fire inside me. Their blockades taught me how to FIGHT HARD for what I wanted. We still have a lot to work through, but I love them so much for helping me become the woman I am today.
Thank you Kore Asian Media for this incredible honor and for bringing together so many inspiring people in our community for a moment to stop, dress up real fancy, and celebrate! Thank you to my fellow creators for your genuine friendship and enthusiastic support. And thank you to YOU GUYS, my POPsters – you are the reason why I’m living my actual dream. THANK YOU.
2018, what a year.
Now…here are some photos from this year’s Unforgettable Gala at the Beverly Hilton, which honestly feels like prom – but like, MUCH MUCH BETTER :)
Me holding my award! It’s so pretty! And actually, dangerously sharp!
On the cover of this year’s KORE Magazine with some VERY influential people in our community!
Here’s me on the Red Carpet wearing my Sherri Hill ballgown. Guess what? IT HAS POCKETS.
Sam Tsui and Jen Chae (Frmheadtotoe) presenting the Digital Influencer Award to me on stage! So special to have my friends there with me for such a special moment.
Incredibly honored to share the same stage as author of my favorite book series, Crazy Rich Asians! Yay go Kevin Kwan, John M. Chu, and the cast of CRA!
Me and da hubs! He didn’t want to go on the red carpet but I made him :)
Friends. Casey Breves, Sam Tsui, me, Sam Livits, Jason Chen and Lucia Liu.
Ballgown life with Jen! Can we wear ballgowns all the time!!??
Okay Jeannie Mai and Mama Mai are HILARE. I can’t even.
Eugene Lee Yang basically winning red carpet fashion.
And finally, Sam Tsui being the friend we all need.
