Bring a Rapist to Justice (1)

Five of those bird magic headcanons!

I’m just going to take this as license to give as many as I want, because I haven’t talked about the actual magic side of things much yet!

Ozpin bestowing the twins his magic was a graduation gift of sorts. Or maybe more like their first job offer. He began discussing it with them and slowly revealing darker truths in team STRQ's fourth year, when they were already taking on relevant field missions, proving their worth. Many conversations between the twins and their closest teammates (detailed) and friends (vaguer, and ...given Raven had any) occurred, similar to the Pyrrah/Jaune convo we saw. [this is on the rp wishlist btw] Qrow was nervous but all about it. Raven had her doubts from the start but at the very least, wasn’t about to pass up a chance at something to make her more powerful.

Receiving the magic was a process of infusing some of Ozma’s essence (just magic itself? his own aura? are they the same in Humanity 1.0? unclear) into the twin’s aura, much like how we saw Fria to Penny and Penny to Winter pass on the maiden powers. This didn’t leave any visible markings - except for those that would be able to read those extra pieces of aura woven into their own (though I’m willing to bend this for any Ravens that hc otherwise).

It could have been as simple as those scenes as well, but Ozpin made it a (small but special) ceremony because the Branwen Twins Are Dramatic and Extra and also the tribe was big on rituals so this made it more comfortable. Oz also wanted to drive home the unique gift, the sanctity and importance of what he was doing. They had time for such pomp back then...

It didn’t hurt. Not the initiation. The first few changes, however, were excruciating. Human and bird aura were now intertwined - the mortal coil of life existing in each pocket of spacetime recognized both forms, but the actual DNA, body systems, physical form took some convincing to, well, shift its shape. It required time and practice and training with Ozpin to make it happen as fast, as smoothly, as effortless as it does now, and to learn how to move and how to fly in a whole new body.

qrow learned to fly first, and took to it quite naturally after the first few bumps.

As the aura was merged, so eventually, did bits of each physical form overlap. The birds have an easier time talking, higher level thoughts, movements beyond instinctual, anthropomorphic projections and colors they might not normally; qrow has feathered hair and oil glands, urges to eat bugs and steal shinies, the ability to see more shades of red and feel changes in the sky, to name a few of each. Raven never told qrow what, if any, changes she felt. She was already gone by the time he noticed his. This does not make them separate beings or brains (though qrow sometimes references it that way), just different forms of consciousness.

It makes qrow, at least, something of an honorary faunus. And didn’t all those origin tales speak of their creation as the meeting of human and special magic, after all? There does seem to be a limit to the physical changes, but each form continues to learn from each other over time.

The twin’s shapeshifting is hereditary. Ozpin did not make it this way intentionally, but like the maiden powers and Ozma’s curse, the magic wants to live on. Unlike the maiden powers, it was bound specifically to two people. However, playing around with aura and DNA so closely means the magic can recognize and bind to other but only Branwen blood. Being a faunus makes this more likely, since it also gives the magic an animal form to cling to and possibly other magic to merge with, if those creation tales have any truth. This also means a form other than a bird is possible. And really, none of them know any of this. [I fold to Ozpin rpers if they veto this one, but the one or two I’ve talked to so far have given it their blessing.]

Struggle is real. lmao. Hard Magic systems

So I decided to work on something a little bigger.

I'm Trying to come up with a magic system. A hard magic system (>>>>:3c) Hard Magic systems always seemed enticing to me, not to mention that the characters i've made have been born in a system that contained a Hard magic system. And if i want to write longer stories with them i need to be Legally and conceptually distinct from DND5e, yet familiar enough to the established idea of Kinds of magic, to ensure that my characters wont stray too far from the idea they emerged from. I wanted to split a magic system, not only by what effects you can achieve, but also how does the magic user understand the concept and inner workings of magic itself. So what i have right now is this Cathegory distinction:

Deific Caster (ex Cleric, Paladin, Devout, Cultist) - A Caster whose ability to wield magic is given by A deity. Said Caster does not understand magic in any significant way. Characteristics of Deific Casters: -Consistent: Deific magic will always produce the same result. Every Magical action X produces magical effect Y. Spell cannot be sculpted. -Given: As soon as the caster acts against the will of the deity, or offends it in any way, the power can be immediately revoked, even permanently. -Simple: Doesn't give the caster any Insight to the works of magic.

Learned/Aquired caster (Wizard, Scholar, Arcanist) - A Caster who's ability to wield magic is learned over years of hard study. Be it a dusty old tome, or a Mage academy. Learned Caster Understands magic in a pragmatic way, as a set of rules, symbols, gestures, equations and components. Characteristics of Learned Casters: -Ruled by rules: The rules to magic are rigid. Breaking them is ill-advised, But a skilled Scholar can bend the rules, exploit them, to make sure the spells he weaves fit his needs. -Art of Science: As the form, flow and shape of magical essences was beaten into the mind. It is Easier for them to distinguish indivitual spells as they're being cast, which is especially magnified when observing other Learned Mages. -Speciality: Learned Mages usually will Master one of the Cathegories of magic to an incredible degree, Impossible to most other mages.

Natural Caster (Sorcerer, Dragonblood, Witch, Warlock) - A caster who has been born with the ability to wield magic. Characteristics of Natural Casters: -As water filling a jar - Magic Is flowing for Natural casters, able to be shifted, sculpted to their whims. Energy Work Practice

Try this. Sit in a chair. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Feet flat on the floor. Hands separated and resting palms up on each thigh.

Create a grounding cord. This is a line of energy that connects your first chakra to the center of the planet. Your first chakra is a ball of energy about the size of a quarter that sits just in front of the base of your spine. Your grounding cord attaches to the bottom of that ball of energy.

Grounding makes your body feel safe, so you release energy more easily. Gravity pulls whatever you release, even your own energy, down to the center of the planet. No effort on your part. The center of the planet neutralizes the energy and returns it to whoever owns it. No karma for anyone. A virtuous cycle.

Nearly everyone goes to connect to the center of the planet the first time but stops at the soil, often making roots like a tree. This is a method that is taught in some martial arts styles, but it is not the best option for your spiritual development and healing.

So, notice the seat of your chair. Take a deep breath. Notice the distance between the seat and the floor. Now notice the distance between the floor and the soil below. Breathe.

Now notice the distance between the soil and the water table underneath. Notice the distance between the water table and the rocky mantle. Notice the distance between the mantle and the molten core below that. Deep breath.

Times of crisis are bound to bring economic consequences. From personal conviction I believe that a country shouldn't pander to investors, but rather stay true to its own ideals. When UK citizens decide that they want less immigration it is bound to put-off some investors, but it may provide other opportunities in the future. I personally find sticking to ideals more admirable than bending them for profit.

With Shells bumper profits coming at a time when UK are facing extraordinarily high energy bills.  

Shell is not alone in this rise in success, for fellow energy company TotalEnergies also reported similar results. Their third-quarter profits posted at $9.86 billion, compared with $4.77 billion a year ago.  

The UK government has responded by putting a 25% windfall tax on energy companies. However, this only applies to profits made in the UK which, for most energy companies, is only a small part of their operation.

I think the increase in profits is a natural development, resulting from increased demand and a rise in prices. However, the 15% increase in dividends for shareholders is outright absurd. While UK households are facing the treat of cold winter and every increasing energy bills, I feel something must be done to compensate UK citizens. The windfall tax is a good start, but it isn't enough. The simple fact that energy companies are reporting double profits compared to last year, along with Shell being on track for record profits doesn't sit right with me. Something must be done.

Choosing magickal oils

Magickal oils have a long, long history. Long ago, oils were a precious source of food and fuel, and the finest were reserved for sacred applications. Oils were offered to the Gods and used to anoint the newly born and dying. Mages scoured the globe for rare flowers, spices, and resins to create special oils for magic, some of which are still in use today.

The popularity of oils in contemporary witchcraft is due to the legacy of medieval magic, the influence of New Orleans-style Voodoo, and the works of the late, great green witch Scott Cunningham—among other sources. The result is a bewildering selection of oils to choose from. There’s simply no way to cover them all in this short article. Instead, we’ll look at some of the different types you may wish to employ in your magick.

There are three main types of oils that you can buy: Essential oils, synthetic fragrance oils, and blended oils (which may also be called anointing oils).

Essential Oils

Essential oils are made by extracting the fragrant volatile compounds from fresh plant material, usually by distillation. Lots and lots of raw materials are required, and they have to be processed quickly before the volatile oils evaporate. Not surprisingly, true essential oils are expensive. They are in high demand for aromatherapy and other natural health remedies.

Many magicians favor pure essential oils because they contain the concentrated essence, or “soul” of the plant. The price of each oil is directly related to how much raw material is required to produce it: Leafy, fragrant Eucalyptus produces much more oil per pound than dry, resinous Myrrh, so Myrrh is the pricier essential oil.

Synthetic Oils

Synthetic fragrance oils are engineered to mimic the fragrances found in nature. They are generally much less expensive than true essential oils. Synthetics are what usually goes in scented products such as candles, potpourris, and perfumes. They are generally longer-lasting fragrances that are less affected by heat and light. Sometimes they are combined with essential oils to bring down the cost. For example, a lavender oil product may contain both lavender essential oil and its synthetic cousin, linalool.

Synthetic fragrances get a bad rap for being “unnatural.” However, some of them are quite close to their plant-derived cousins and are only distinguishable to a chemist or trained nose. Also, some plant-based fragrances (like Jasmine) are so costly that the market for them is all but dominated by synthetics. As a magician, you’ll have to decide if synthetic fragrances are suitable for use in your rituals.

Blended Oils

Blended oils are composed of one or more fragrances diluted with an unscented base or carrier oil. Unlike essential oils, they may be applied directly to the skin. (Assuming you’re not allergic.) Blended oils may contain genuine essential oils, synthetics, or both.

Most of the ready-to-use oils in metaphysical stores fall into this category. There are anointing oil versions of popular plant-based fragrances, of course--but it doesn’t stop there. There are also oils for the saints, the angels, the planets, the zodiac signs, the chakras, deities, and every magical objective that can be imagined!

Purpose-blended oils are presently enjoying a renaissance, and there are many independent producers offering their own elixirs. But the grandmother of them all is Dorothy Spencer, better known as Anna Riva. She began selling blended oils in the 1960s. At the time of her death in 2003, there were hundreds of oils in her catalog, each emblazoned with the familiar gold-foiled, terribly typeset label.

Anna Riva pioneered the marketing of “condition oils” (also called “fixing oils” or “conjure oils”). Used in Hoodoo and folk magic, they’re meant to fix a bad condition and/or bring about a better one. They generally have a mineral oil base, colorful contents, and even more colorful names. You can dominate someone with Bend Over Oil, send your enemies trotting with Hot Foot Oil, or trip up evil with Devil’s Shoestring Oil.

I sell some of these concoctions in my store, but if someone asks me what’s in them, the answer is always, “Goddess knows!”  Blended oils use traditional recipes which are often secret.

Blended oils come in different sizes, ranging from 2 dram (1/8 oz) up to 16 oz. (Though I pity the person who needs a pint of Fix My Luck Oil!) The smell is usually perfume-y and nondescript, but some classic oils (like Black Cat Oil and Oil of Abramelin) have become recognizable scents over time through their extensive use in the Craft.

Shopping for Magickal Oils

Essential oils and fragrance oils vary widely in price and quality. When selecting them, it’s best to go with your nose. If you can’t sample the oils, buy from a reputable supplier or favorite brand. And use common sense. It takes a couple hundred pounds of roses to make an ounce of true essential oil.  At $7.99 a bottle, that “pure natural rose oil” probably isn’t what it claims to be.

It’s also worth mentioning that scented oils are neither a food nor a drug, and are totally unregulated by the FDA. So claims like “certified organic,” “100% pure,” and “Grade A” are just so much noise. A well-staffed health food store or apothecary may be able to answer some of your questions about the ingredients and origins of their oils. But most often, it’s a case of “buyer beware”.

Both essential oils and undiluted fragrance oils are highly concentrated and should never be applied directly to the skin. Doing so can cause irritation, rashes, liver damage—even permanent sensitivity to the product. However, if safely diluted, they are a wonderful addition to your ritual baths and other preparations.

Anointing oils are pre-diluted, but do a skin test before applying in large quantities. Also use caution when buying oils at vendor's fairs and markets.  There are some wonderful small-batch ritual oils and fragrances, but not everyone who offers these products knows what they're doing.

All fragrances will diminish over time, and especially if exposed to light and heat. Buy only what you plan to use in a reasonable amount of time (a year or two), and keep it in a cool, dark place.

Making Your Own

At some point, you may want to try your hand at mixing your own oils for ritual use.  To do this, you'll need just a few basic supplies: A base (carrier) oil, concentrated oils, droppers, labels and containers for the finished product.

A book or website on fragrance-making can tell you more about the advantages and disadvantages of different carrier oils, and suggested ratios for dilution. At first, you may want to follow an existing recipe and then modify it as you please.  I recommend keeping a log of every blend you experiment with, so you'll always be able to re-create that "just right" formulation.

Making your own ritual oils allows you to create exactly what you need for a specific working. You can also incorporate factors (like astrological timing) that are hard to control in oils made by others.  On the other hand, pre-made oils are convenient, inexpensive, and may meet your needs just fine.
