I said it over on twitter but it bears repeating over here.
Louis is light-skinned, him being black doesn't mean he automatically has the darkest skin tone in the room, and it's noticeable and odd when you choose to draw him darker than Armand. I understand the want to make sure you aren't whitewashing but we've gone too far in the other direction and it's still not great. You do need to still put in the effort to not just slapping any skin tone on a person. This happens with Claudia a ton too, especially with season 1 Claudia.
Black people are not a monolith. We aren't a vague collection of swappable features to pick and choose at random, and its starting to feel like artists don't care to actually draw how black characters look as long as they are recognizable as a generalized black person. Making non-black characters notably lighter and smaller in stature compared to a black character has roots in a bunch of racist shit, and it feels especially egregious in Louis' case. Ofc as an artist you're going to emphasize and stylize one way or another, but you also need to recognize that you aren't creating in a vacuum, and how you depict people is reflective of how many of us are seen.

STORIES TELLING: HOW RECURRING MUSIC IN OFMD CAUSES MENTAL DEVASTATION IN THE VERY BEST WAY
How the Blackbeard theme, Gnossienne No. 5, and Voi Che Sapepte reveal, reinforce and recontextualize the narrative. An in-depth analysis of key scenes throughout seasons 1 and 2.
Much gratitude to pocket friends who were so encouraging and provided valuable feedback while I worked on this.
Meta by these authors (links, below the cut) influenced this video:
@asneakyfox, @asongaboutpirates, @bakasara, @doyoueverstopandthink, @chaotic-neutral-knitter, @forpiratereasons @fresne999 @gaypiratepropaganda, @jaskierx, @medievill, @mxmollusca, @piratecaptainscaptainpirates @veeagainsttheday, @57flagsofdeath
Gnossienne No. 5
doyoueverstopandthink - i will literally never get over about how fantastic the transition from robert schumann's "träumerei" to erik satie's "gnossiennes: no. 5" is
Voi Che Sapete
asongaboutpirates - Another little detail about OFMD that makes me go feral
Transformation in OFMD
fresne999 - Half way through the journey of our analyses
mxmollusca - The transformation from object to subject, from something that has things done to it versus someone with agency.
Ed's & Izzy's Relationship
asneakyfox - you have to understand i have always felt the key thing that makes blackhands interesting...
chaotic-neutral-knitter - Izzy telling Stede "I know you think you understand him," and Stede immediately describing Ed's emotional state perfectly accurately...
gaypiratepropaganda - On Izzy saying "because of your feelings for Stede fucking Bonnet"
Ed's Arc
veeagainsttheday - Ed, Killing, and the Kraken in Our Flag Means Death S1 and S2
piratecaptainscaptainpirates - I've been thinking about how Ed starts directly killing people in s2e8
57flagsofdeath - Still thinking about this scene. Ed lights the fire place, puts a blanket on the floor to lay on, and puts the two cake toppers next to each other before rolling over and bursting into tears.
asneakyfox - i've talked a fair bit about how i don't think "anger issues" is a very useful way to describe how the show frames ed's relationship with violence
Izzy's Arc
bakasara - Trying to parse my thoughts on Izzy's death and why I had a different reaction to it than I thought I would.
forpiratereasons - all right. i'm ready to talk about izzy.
Love & Relationships in OFMD
jaskierx - posting some thoughts from the discord about how many 'irl relationship' things they're dealing with in ep7 and how much i am eating my mattress about it
medievill - ofmd does not give a fuck about reality or history or anachronism but it draws the line at magic dick.

something I find especially entertaining about Edward IV's reign is how Scandalous™ it was lol
he married a woman “whose origins broke all established conventions for English queenship” in a secret ceremony without consulting any of his lords and then made it everyone else's problem. he committed regicide, he committed fratricide; he was accused of bastardry, he was accused of bigamy and a 19-year-long sham marriage, he was accused of using necromancy against his subjects, he was accused of being enchanted by witchcraft by both his wife and his mother-in-law (multiple times). his own mother was said to "rule the king as she pleased" in the early years of his reign. he knew he was hot and actively milked it for money. he was vain as fuck: “he was wont to show himself to those who wished to watch him, and he seized any opportunity that the occasion offered of revealing his fine stature to onlookers”. he knew everything about everyone. "he was more favourable than other princes to foreigners". he was “fond of boon companionship, vanities, debauchery, extravagance and sensual enjoyments”; he was "thought to have indulged in his passions and desires too intemperately”; "it was ever feared he was not chaste”. his subjects publicly gossiped about his sex life, his doctors thought he was insane. NOBODY understood how he was still competent despite all this.
honestly, who was doing it like him?

(May 15th)
(May 16th)
Decided to make my own post instead of making an obnoxious addition but i did think reading today's Dracula that it's really interesting this is like the second time Jonathan thinks about some hypothetical lovelorn, unthreatening woman/women from a past era having inhabited the same space he's in? I guess there's some kind of Angel in the House women=domesticity comfort about that to him, even though the house is like, haunted as fuck now, but it also almost comes off to me as though he's comparing as well as contrasting himself to them or feeling a sense of kinship, being stuck in the castle right now and in the same space going through (he imagines, like with the writing in May 15th) similar actions? there's a lot of gender going on I'm curious if anyone has any more thoughts about it
