Walking In Memphis - Elle Greenaway/Emily Prentiss

A/N: Last fic for day 22 of @fluffbruary. Dedicated to @blackbird-brewster, @criminalmindsgonewrong and @bau-drabbles for reminding me that actually, it’s fun to play in the sandbox and tell canon to get lost.

Emily isn’t sure what made her come to Memphis without most of the team, a sudden spree of unsubs going missing felt familiar to her somehow and she knew, she just knew, she would have to do whatever it took to stay safe and not risk the person she was sure it was. Buy them both some time. It's dawn when she finds her. Elle. Elle Greenaway. Elle’s patching herself up in a hotel toilets, flinching when Emily locks them in and she almost sighs as Emily moves closer, accepting the help slightly shyly. “Thanks…” “What made you do it Elle?” The question is soft and Emily knows from the way Elle tenses she expects something more. “Just tell me…” So she does. Elle leads her out after she’s done gathering her things and Emily watches her in the dawning light, noting the way Elle seems lighter already for telling her. The years have been kind, she looks almost exactly the same, her hair is longer again, softer curls, less tangled, but she’s still Elle. The woman she’d known at the academy, the woman Hotch knew he’d chased away. “Come home?” “I can’t… He’d know.” “He… isn’t lead anymore. He’s not in charge.” “Who…” “I am, and we need you.”

Something that really gets to me about Hotch is how patient he is with his team. You never really see him lose his temper with them, even when they lose his temper with him.

Morgan and Reid have both yelled at Hotch but both times he never yelled back, he just calmly told them he values them and that they are misunderstanding his intentions.

He revealed in season 5 that he does his team’s case summaries most of the time so that they can go home when they are meant to, meaning he is always in the office.

He always lets Garcia do her silly bits because he knows it’ll make her day better, and sometimes he will even indulge her by joining in.

He put everything on the line by keeping Reid’s addiction a secret and by not telling anyone about what Elle did.

He did everything he could to protect Emily when her life was in danger.

When a member of his team says they need a break or they need to step away, he never forces them to carry on, he is so completely understanding of their needs and genuinely values their mental well-being.

I just love him so much, he was such a perfect leader

“What the hell even is that?” “You see my point?” Elle asks with a laugh, Emily’s soft fingers tracing over the soul freckles making her smile. Emily pulls away slowly then turns her wrist. A perfectly shaped gun sits in the freckles and Elle laughs a little. “So I get a crown for Mommy’s Little Princess and you get something actually logical… great.” “You still found me.” “Yeah, thanks to JJ.” Elle murmurs and leans a little closer, wrapping an arm around Emily’s waist. “Not that I mind, I got my girl, that’s good enough for me.” They’ve talked about it before, but as they watch JJ with Alex it’s all the clearer that they were truly blessed to have such a sweet and understanding friend who seemed to be gifted with the ability to make sense of people’s soul freckles.
