I think my favorite trope in middle grade books is how firmly the narrator manages to convince themselves they're going to have a "normal" anything. (vacation, walk, school year, etc)
Like it's definitely not healthy in any way, but I admire their total commitment to it. like, bud. did you see the cover of this book? the MC tries so hard to have the major plot point not happen so hard, and they never succeed.
feel free to add if you know of more books/MC's that do this, I made a list in the tags, but it's kinda short.

Why Aaron and Emily’s relationship wasn’t healthy and why it’s good they broke up reasons
1. Lack of communication/misunderstanding
2. Different expectations
3. Social skills (not communicating feelings)
4. Starting the relationship too soon
If there’s other reasons you can think of comment or message me
I will make an individual list for both sides

As a fellow Little Mermaid/Emily Windsnap fan, what do you think would happen if Emily and Princess Melody ever met?
(it is funny both franchises have a character named Melody)
Well, they're around the same age and they have a whole lot in common. I think they'd probably be fast friends and go on all sorts of adventures together!
Melody: "I can't believe you can transform just by going in and out of the water. I'm so jealous!"
Emily: "I'm jealous that you have a sea king who actually listens to reason most of the time. Neptune could learn a thing or two from him."
Melody: "I hear Grandfather used to be a lot worse, but that was before I was born. But my parents can be pretty bad too. They kept the truth from me for twelve years when there were so many other ways they could have protected me instead, if they'd just stopped to think it through!"
Emily: "Yeah, my parents have done some dumb things here and there, but nothing as bad as that! It wasn't their fault I didn't know the truth. Still... you're lucky you grew up with both your parents, at least. I didn't even meet my dad until recently. We missed out on so much time together."
Melody: "I guess being half mermaid just comes with drama. I'm hoping the worst is over and things will finally calm down now that the land and sea are united again."
Emily: "Yeah, let's try and avoid all drama from now on. Agreed?"
Melody: "Agreed! Want to go for a swim?"
Emily: "Yeah! Let's go this way - I think I see something shiny over there..."
(and then they proceed to accidentally instigate the next oceanwide catastrophe)
