Will confessed his feelings to Mike. Mike liked this.
He didn’t show it, but the idea of Will liking him, loving him made his stomach twist and his heart skip a beat. All those longing stares, those lingering embraces, they made so much sense now. Mike felt like an idiot for not realizing it sooner. But that didn’t matter. What mattered was Will standing before him in the pouring rain giving his heart to Mike. Mike took it, held it, put it in a box for safe keeping. But he wasn’t quite ready to give his own to Will. He didn’t even know how, didn’t know where to begin.
They’re closer than ever now, if that’s even possible. Will was afraid he’d somehow make things weird between them, but Mike assured him, repeatedly, that would never happen. Ever. He became even more protective, even more possessive of Will. He was Mike's, love and all.
Things went back to normal, save for the fact that Mike is having a hard time ignoring his own butterflies, let alone Will’s. They were sitting on Mike's bed reading comics and laughing when they caught each other's gaze. Will looked away first, but not fast enough to avoid blushing. Mike swallowed, biting back a smile and nearly failing.
Will was staying over that night. He offered to sleep on the floor, so as not to make Mike uncomfortable, but Mike wouldn't have it. So, they brushed their teeth, said goodnight to Ted and Karen, and got ready for bed. Mike briefly thought about how if Will was a girl, they would have told him to leave the door open a few inches. He liked how clueless they were.
"G'night, Will."
"G'night, Mike"
Neither of them fell asleep very fast. Once they settled in, the silence fell on them hard. Will was facing the wall, and Mike was staring at the ceiling fan. His mind felt like those whooshing blades, swirling around and around until they blur. His fingers rested on his stomach were restless, fidgeting desperately just as his mind tried to make sense of his heart.
He wanted to say so many things, ask so many things. Deep down, he wanted more, but Mike didn’t know what to do with it. He barely even understood it as the desire it was. It was like someone pleading for help in another language. They’re so desperate and afraid, but he can’t help unless he knows what they need.
Luckily, Mike started to drift before he could ask.
When he woke up, an arm was draped across his chest. In the few seconds before he realized whose arm it was, he held his breath. Then he realized it was Will’s and let it go, smiling and closing his eyes again.
Then his eyes burst open once he realized he liked how it felt.
Panicking, Mike slid out of bed as quickly and quietly as he possibly could, but he knew Will was a notoriously light sleeper.
“Mike?”
He froze. “Sorry, just–going to the bathroom. Go back to sleep.”
Will laid back down as Mike rushed to the bathroom, locking the door.
Mike splashed cold water on his face until he was shivering. There was no way he could just get back into bed with Will. But nobody else in the house was awake yet, not even Ted who could wake up at the sound of a pin dropping outside.
He didn’t know why he liked it. He didn’t like it! It was just unexpected. It’s not a big deal. Mike just needs to calm down, and go back to sleep, because there’s no reason why that would be weird.
Will was facing away from him when he got back into bed.
“Mike?”
There was absolutely no reason Mike's heart should be racing this early in the morning.
“Yeah?”
Will’s voice was almost too soft to hear. “Are you sure this isn’t weird?”
“Of course not! Why would it be weird?”
Will turned to face him. “I didn’t mean to cuddle you. I know you’re not…”
The shame in Will’s voice made Mike’s heart break.
“It’s… it’s okay. I don’t mind, really.”
Will sniffled. “You’re sure?”
“Yeah! I mean, we used to cuddle all the time as kids. Why does it have to be different now?”
“Mike—”
“Look. I don’t care about any of that. You’re still my best friend, okay? No matter what.”
A look of sadness, relief, and hope washed over Will’s face all at once.
“Okay.”
