Headcanons surrounding the abbey, the siblings, and the ghouls. Let's go.

-The abbey is a mix of new and old architecture, with an emphasis on cohesively blending the newer wings with the older parts of the building, at least from an aesthetic standpoint.

However, there are some parts of the abbey that have been intentionally cut off by modern additions, in other words; There are parts of the abbey that are visible form the outside, but completely inaccessible from within.

These parts of the abbey are either structurally unsound, thus dangerous for anyone to venture into, or have been sealed for reasons unknown.

As a result of this decision to conceal rather than demolish these areas, the abbey has a very mazelike layout akin to the Winchester Mansion, and new and old siblings of sin are often seen consulting maps to find their way around.

-The basement where the ghouls reside/where their dorms are housed is NOT the abbey's "real" basement; The abbey's actual basement, where the electrical panels and pipes feed down to, is only accessible through two points on the property.

The first entrance is located through a door labeled, "Custodial Services Only", and is pretty obvious, given that the door itself is painted bright red and has a keypad beside it, whereas the other one is located... somewhere.

Yeah, no one actually knows where the second entrance is, but it's somewhere outside.

The ghouls also have another way of getting into the actual basement, but that's because ghouls really love to dig.

-Speaking of weird shit underground, if it wasn't bad enough that the abbey is a maze, there's plenty of places where one could accidentally wind up in the catacombs, because, yeah, not only do they have two basements, they have a tunnel of bones, too!

Mountain says it used to be used for burials back in the olden days, but that it eventually took on a more sinister history that he prefers not to delve into.

Dew sometimes hangs out down there with "the nuns", and he won't elaborate more on what he means by that, and everyone is lowkey a little concerned.

-On the topic of the nuns though... Yeah, there's a bunch of dead nuns floating around the place, which may or may not be the reason why the library is so fucking haunting, but we digress.

Many of the siblings report seeing apparitions of nuns -not sisters of sin in their habits, straight up nuns- traveling through some of the more secluded hallways, and on occasion one of the old chapels seems to be filled with the sounds of prayers spoken in Latin despite the room itself being condemned and empty.

This is another place where Dew can be found from time to time, seemingly having conversations with the air.

-The infirmary is one of the newer additions to the abbey, as the older wing dedicated to medical services was bricked shut during renovations decades ago and has been left to rot ever since.

There's a challenge among the medical staff, ghouls included, in which they have to travel from the infirmary to the old wing, touch the wall where the door used to be, and come back, and there are marks from where they've placed their hands there.

Aether undertook this mission solo after his retirement, needing to feel some kind of connection to the abbey and leave his mark, and truth be told he's never quite been the same since.

According to him, once you see the wall, it's impossible not to feel different.

"You'll always know someone is looking out for you... whether you like it or not."

And lastly;

-There's a rumor among the siblings that there's a secret cemetery in the woods surrounding the abbey, but no one has been able to find it... at least no one who's lived to tell the tale.

Many more scientifically minded folks think these individuals may have fell victim to sinkholes or one of the edgeless, cavernous wells -such as Ol' Dens' Pond- that have cropped up over the years, but no one can say for certain.

In a way, perhaps, it is a self made graveyard, born of aimless wandering and a lack of caution.

Though the worn crosses turned to naught moss covered stones beg to differ.

“Don’t you dare,”

Arthur’s hand froze over Cromwell’s skull as Rhys slapped his fingers away and down and snatched up bone, gripping the jawless head by the temples and pulling it from reach. Arthur went to take it from him, but they froze as Matthew rolled over from his place and bundled into a quilt. When he didn’t wake, Rhys snapped his gaze back to Arthur, and he found himself being dragged from the study with its electric faux fire and his son draped over the sofa, sleeping like the dead. They were suddenly in the hall, and he found himself pinned against the wall by his brother’s forearm. “You are not waking mother again.”

Arthur thrust the arm away but found he couldn’t move Rhys. He’d always been denser, compact and heavy like a lead ingot. “I don’t need to. I only need the skull and the spring.”‌

“For what? You delusional bastard. Do you fancy you can open a portal?‌ You can barely make a curse box without me, much less this deep in your cups. And you are not sullying her grave with that man’s bones.”

“I have Alfred to consider. Don’t pretend you have the—”

“It’s my name he bears, you bloody bastard. How Saxon do you think Jones is? Hm? All of your children are as much us as they are you. Including Alfred.”‌

“Would you be reasonable?”

“No.” Rhys was very close, a spring force as he stood straight.

“Since when do you—”

“Since you rolled out of a bloody fairy ring and into my lap.” He prodded Arthur towards the stairs. “I am not letting you run off half-cocked because it’s easier to hurl yourself into a void than feel a fucking emotion. This isn’t you tossing yourself into a ship and running; this is a paradigm shift in the universe, you daft cunt.”

“Rhys—”

“May Mother strike me dead before I‌ lose two nephews and a brother at once,” He was very close now, and sometimes ‌Arthur remembered why there was a dragon on every flag his brother used. “You are a grown fucking man with four grown children. Take a fucking avomine, sleep more than thirty seconds, and we’ll make a move in the fucking morning. Go.”‌

Burial Mound, Cumbria The Next Morning

Matthew knows he is dying when his uncle’s arms catch and hold him and he doesn't care. He has bled to death more than once. His shoulder had nearly been torn from his body once; a lobsterback cavalryman had broken an infantry formation he’d been caught in trying to run from the cannon fire. The bare faces of his arm bones saw the sky that day. He never ran away from a fight again. He was a century older when a gaping cavern of flesh appeared where his belly once was. A‌ piece of shrapnel severed his spine and his jugular. And blasted a hole through his front. This is worse. This is much worse, but Alasdair kisses his head, and Matthew stands, blank and unmoving.

He has said goodbye to the two who were once his siblings, and he hopes the squeeze they gave him isn't the last good thing he ever feels. Now he is without them, standing before the ruins of a chapel. Trees soar to the sky, older than most in England, but spaced like the posts of a palisade. He can hear running water and whispers. Aunt Brighid is there. Father asks her something. Softer than he ever does, and she stands tall.

“I‌ wove the spells into his cradle, I‌ will not damn him to a grave so far from home. And the past is another country.”

His father is not often speechless, but the novelty is not enough to stop the bleeding. There is no trace of red, but he wishes it would be over, that it could all seep into the earth and let him go—anything to make the silence end. Even a scream will not pierce it now; it lays so thick over his thoughts. He is dying. Uncle Rhys lights a torch, then two more. Even here, lifting light, Matthew is redundant. He can only follow as his father and uncles follow their sister, lingering behind as she walks ahead. Alasdair, Rhys, and last, Arthur. Perhaps the first time in a thousand years his father has not led. His uncles carve sharp shapes into old indentations softened by exposure. His father cuts his hand and presses blood into the runes until it drips into the furrows and inks their carvings into contrast with the darkness. Matthew cannot read the shapes. His aunt sings, and he does not understand the words. As he always has, he clings to the tree line and watches others do their work. Something in him wants to die. Something in him knows his will, drowning in silence that will not let him hear his own voice anymore.

A woman’s figure appears. His father’s mother, but not his grandmother. Her time is too far gone for him to know her now if he ever did. Matthew’s hands are shaking now. They speak more words he does not understand. The Welsh vowels and little pieces of Scots Gaelic he can hear refuse to make any sense. He knows Gaelic the way he does his French, as natural as breathing, but he cannot put meaning to sound, and nothing makes sense. He wishes he would bleed to death already.

Then, Life.

His world broke open with a song. He doesn’t know which one. Something about a republic and grapes of wrath: the chorus is the laugh of North America, showing teeth and soaring like the sky. Alfred. A‌ branch nearly takes his head off as he smashes through the trees towards the sound. More laughter. His world was born from a bolt of it centuries before. The pool of a spring lap at the stones of the edge, and the water sings in his brother’s voice for a moment before Matthew realizes the sound is below the water. There is no bottom of the pool; the stone edges descend into a black abyss. He would not have understood the depth of it even a moment before Alfred cut himself free from their reality. Kneeling, he touched the edges of the stone and knew the rounded channels locking into place were his uncles doing, the same dry stone construction of a broch.

“Mattie,” Alfred spoke, only barely damped by the water. A week without Alfred and he'd lost more love than Francois had given him in 150 years. Just a thread of it wound around his heart, hearing his name on the piano notes of his brother's laugh and pulled him forward.

He dove.

It’s the Rev that makes you lose your shit. There’s a very powerful connection to Troubles and trauma and that man, he’s done unspeakable things to you. It’s everything Dwight can do not to murder him everytime he lays eyes on him. The worst part is that if  he tried to exorcize ‘the demon’ out of you as a child how many others are there that Dwight doesn’t know about.

It’s the taste of Ozone that alerts Dwight to the problem, the sharp tang stings his tongue as you dart up the steps and inside the funeral home. Your hands are tucked into your pockets but he would bet his life that the static is sparking like crazy.

When you get into the Sky Room you can see it’s been re-decorated. The walls were painted a duck egg blue that complimented the glass pane that was fixed into the ceiling over a gorgeous, backlit display of a white clouds set against a crisp blue sky. It’s one of the chapels of rest, thankfully an empty one for now.

Your vision tunnels; your legs quiver as you put your hand on the wall for balance.

You can’t breathe, you can’t fucking breathe.

The pressure in your chest is getting worse, the lightning in your veins was zinging through your nerve endings like a pin pong ball, searching for an outlet. Your knees buckle, sending you crashing down onto the beige carpeted floor. It feels soft underneath your palms as you close your eyes, trying to draw in a breath.

The final cable of your control snapped. Your ears pop, a rush of noise assaulting your senses as the deluge of power forces its way out of your body. The air crackles, your mouth filled with metal as the current grips you, releasing streaks of gold that emanate from you skin. Shards of glass explode from a vase of flowers, singed petals erupt into the air like a flurry of snowflakes. The spotlights above flicker, flashing like strobe lights as the power drained from your body.

It hurts like hell, like there’s someone driving a thousand tiny needles into your flesh. The static ricochets through your bones, your teeth grinding together as a low whine tearing from your throat.

There’s was a relief to the agony. The sensation of emptiness swelling deep within you as you draw in your first breath in what seems like an eternity.

The door swings open, Nathan barrelling through. You can’t speak, can’t warn him. You stick out a hand to ward him off because the electricity is still live.

Dwight’s hand shoot out, grasping Nathan’s arm and hurling him out of the way before he can take more than a few steps.

‘Don’t touch her!’ He tells Nathan as he yanks him back. ‘She’s dangerous right now.’

‘He’s right,’ You say finally, your throat raw. You can feel the current starting to ebb away but it’s still there, still vengeful, still violent.

Nathan hovers before Dwight tips his head towards the kitchen he saw on the way in.

‘Go get her a bottle of water and something sugary to eat.’ He says before stepping inside the room and shutting the door quietly behind him. He crouches down alongside of you staying just shy of the electric field as you sank back onto your knees. Your eyes meet and you remember the last time this had happened around him, how calm he’d been, how reassuring. Your hands come to settle on your thighs as you take a deep breath and then another.

‘It’s getting worse, isn’t it?’ He says as he looks at the shards of glass embedded in the carpet. ‘It was never as bad as this before.’

‘Yea.’ You say shakily as you use the back of your hand to wipe away the sweat from your brow. ‘It is.’

She watches the sun rising from the steps of the Saint Chapelle and with all its beauty coming alive and that willful look of a coquettish lover, for a moment Paris appears a treacherous mistress, laughing at her and forgetting her in favor of the next one to charm and abandon. “This is the extremely sexy pot calling the kettle black, Bon,” Damon says sitting at her side on the cold steps. She turns her face to see him and she can picture him so well her heart stumbles in his irises.

Whose fault is this really? She was so sure she could move on, so sure she was above the miseries of human love that she could turn her back and ignore him. Well, she realizes watching Damon’s smile, it turns out she can’t.

The air in the first hours of the morning is chilly, but it’s not that which chills her to the bone. It’s the idea that she gave up the only thing that mattered like it meant nothing, and maybe, just maybe, if she had tried, she could have been happy. Maybe she just lost something that was hers because she didn’t care to hold on to it.

She walks back to her B&B stubbornly, seeing no one, and when she lets herself into her room the sound of the piano makes her eyes burn. She locks the door to her room, her hand lingering on the handle and her power leaves her palm like an electric discharge, insulating the room.

“Now, if you want to skip immediately to the loud part of this encounter, I’m gonna sacrifice my fine sensitivities on the altar of your appetites and say yes,” Damon’s voice says at her back.

It’s such a typical thing to say on his part, and if she turns around now she’s gonna see him, that insolent face and those eyes, playful and so full impure promises. But she’s tired of it and now she really has no choice but to move on, because she has lost even the last piece of him she had any right over. And now it’s really the end.

She laughs and her tears spill over like she’s been on the verge of crying for months, maybe years. She feels the wall of her defense crumble pitifully and she bends her head forward covering her face with both hands.

“No one’s ever reacted this way to the idea of having sex with me,” Damon says, half disappointed, half scared of such reaction. He reaches her in a couple of steps inside her small room. “What happened?” he asks softly, taking her by the shoulders to guide her against his chest, where she drenches the fabric of his shirt. “Who do I need to kill?” he asks tenderly, for good measure.

“Bon,” he murmurs softly dropping a kiss on top of her head, “What’s wrong?”

Ghoul Room Headcannons

Cirrus: Has an upright piano in her room so she can practice whenever. That is when she’s not at the grand piano in the abbey entrance or the organ in the chapel. Yes that means she ends up playing in the middle of the night when she can’t sleep.

Cumulus: The most comfortable nest ever. Full of the softest blankets and fluffiest pillows. When the girls want to cuddle they typically end up in Cumulus’ room.

Sunshine: Lots of windows and a massive skylight so she can get as much natural light as possible. Her favorite part of her morning routine is throwing all the curtains open. The sun patch from the skylight is perfect for afternoon naps.

Aurora: Has a mural of the aurora borealis on her ceiling. She painted it herself shortly after being summoned and discovering a love for art. She’s now the abbey’s resident portrait artist. Her bed is also piled with stuffed animals.

Dewdrop: Large fireplace inlaid with lava rock. The fire is constantly going in the winter. He keeps it going with fire magic, no fuel needed.

Rain: His bathtub is basically a small pool. The bathroom itself is already larger than most and the tub takes up half the room. He loves long soaks and practically lives in the tub during the winter when the lake freezes over. There are electric heating coils inlayed in the porcelain to keep the water warm.

Mountain: Practically an indoor forest. Every surface is covered with plants or nature related items (rocks, twigs, animal bones). He has so many plants, all with their own needs and only he can keep track of them (Dewdrop is never allowed to plant sit again). He’s named each and every one and he talks to them of course..

Aether: Walls lined with tall bookshelves. While Mountain’s room is a forest of plants, Aether’s is a forest worth of books. He has tomes on practically everything from quintessence magic to cookbooks. He just really likes reading in his freetime. Definitely has reading glasses.

Swiss: Gives Cumulus a run for her money on the comfiest nest. His fireplace is often going (again, fire magic) to keep the room pleasantly warm and his large bed is ideal for cuddle puddles.

Phantom: If one of the ghouls is missing an article of clothing and it isn’t with the usual culprits, Phantom likely has it. He just sorta borrows everyone’s stuff. Not meanly. The clothes just smell like his packmates so they're comforting to have around.

surrounded by children's books, Jesus watches over me.

His knees are scraped to the bone. blood and sweat drip from His forehead. thorns still drag into His scalp.

votives flicker at His feet, the smell of candle smoke enchants the carpet below.

i wish He would let me go, but i know i have to be here.

He is the only one who can see me.

The Ticket to Tomorrow: Chapter 20 Snippet "Legato's Devotion"

Sharing this spoileriffic snippet for Chapter 20 which is like 98% complete. It'll be a few weeks before the chapter is posted, but I thought I'd share this little Legato psychobabble scene. Enjoy~!

Scene context: 

Location: Plant facility in a medium-sized city of Ripmela on No Man's Land 

The city folk are aware that Lobo (mercenary/bounty hunter from DC Comics) had stolen a Plant from the facility the night before and that Vash is likely to come to this city very soon. 

Lobo just woke up from a drunken nap at the city saloon. He learned that a tantalizing bounty head would be arriving and got all excited.

Vash, Wolfwood, Lois, and Jimmy just arrived in Ripmela about mid-morning after getting run out of Little Jersey the night before. They intend to go to the sandsteamer port, but word of the Plant theft caught their attention, so they are going to investigate.

The scene below happens just before they get to the Plant facility.

As the Angel’s most faithful follower strode through this holy chapel, his echoing footsteps rang out like the tolling of a church bell.

The nonbelievers infested and sullied this blessed house like unwelcome spiders. They attempted to hinder his pilgrimage to bask in the presence of the angels within.

With a flick of a wrist and a dance of fingertips, the heathans rose into the air and crumpled in on themselves. Their will could not overcome the god-given power of his devotion. 

With another rolling motion of his wrist, the spiders turned their weapons to one another. The cacophonous melody of their gunfire, the bullets clinking to the ground, and their cries of anguish moments before death were a beautiful hymn to his ears.

And the red wine of life splattered the walls and seeped into the floor as their sacrificial offering. 

Their sacrifice would be the lure for the fallen angel—to coax the Fallen One here to face retribution for the betrayal of the most beautiful Angel—his Lord and Master.

The loyal devotee recalled the words and will of the Angel. “Bestow my fallen brother eternal suffering at the tainted hands of you humans. Show him the true nature of the foul spiders that he so desperately defends. Engrave the futility of his cause into his flesh and his every bone.” 

He also remembered giving the sermon to the other servants of the Eye of Michael, imparting his Lord’s will. Just before, the other human tools dared to blaspheme their Lord and his fallen brother, calling them monsters. 

Such a cuss could be expected, yet not tolerated. The other human tools couldn’t truly comprehend the divinity of such superior beings.

The one wavering servant, the Hornfreak, even boldly raised his weapon to his own head, declaring him the lunatic. As the Angel’s favored devotee, he had swiftly reminded them all of their place and corrected their folly. The Hornfreak was putty under the force of his faith. The lowly servant’s back arched almost to its breaking point as he splayed his fingers with a rigid flourish. 

The other human tools backed down in compliance at the display.

Despite the Hornfreak’s defiance, he was pleased when the Puppet-Master brought word of the Fallen One’s presence in one of the Sinner’s cities. The fallen angel’s next reprieve would be in Ripmela. 

It had been two long years of watching his beloved Lord recover from his brother’s betrayal. And for those years, the devotee cursed the fallen brother every single day. 

At long last, he would deliver punishment to the Fallen One. The thrill was intoxicating. And he would do so here, in the heart of this holy place.

Alexanderplatz is searching for another person he fancies to be beyond a colorless wraith. He scrambled toward the chapel, preoccupying his fear with a familiar symbol of community and ascetic decay. He has no allies.

Rumor purports that there is a history for how abandoned both structures seem today. I sigh and reminisce about the fitness instructor who once dragged the sinewy threads of bones without water. Alexanderplatz is running past the yellow tape that reads DO NOT ENTER, repeating. He died the moment he sought a medium for his wounds.

Alexanderplatz is now darker than the evening is all fire. He cries below the edge of the wisteria-shaded indoor wooden platform within the ravished belly of the chapel. He pretends that he can still repent, that he can still save himself, while from my vantage across a sea of forest and horned electrical arrays in a tidefall of sunless fumes create the silhouettes of polluted Fates: there are only visible entrails of a ominous little spider’s legs pedaling briskly beyond his vanishing form knelt inside a mile or so big black-out, an infernal nimbus of coughing earth-water thunderous above and fallen county-wide.

There is a queer window deep inside the marketplace attic and alongside the western wing of the brickwork and big metal-shuttered mouths with grates for teeth and would respirate a cool shockwave downside my collarbone and rise solicitiously up my navel after I look up from my naked waistline adorned in tidings of early victory and then spot where I ambled upstairs was facient in that it was situated favorably across from the slammed clangorous howl seen as a plume forever ringing out choppy bodies of chemically-altered celestial horizons at the burial summit where sank the true enemy’s condemned chapel under earthshaken knees bent piously beneath blades of seraphes aglint faintly, his face shrouded by a dustcloud of decaying paint peeling into darker air that made him careless when the current of wind whispers the avenging phantom’s merciless steal whereupon my stupid adversary froze up there, expression pharaonic. I was able to reach it after having a transaction at the Saturday fracas(I approached a kiosk unlabeled, and a sensuous smile was gleaming behind the rows of jellied-eels inside nine variegated jars in front of my viewing). The proportions of the chapel are similar to the shape of an obsidian serpent I once saw in a dream as a child, and witnessed myself melting profusely into puddles powerless between both palms.

The peeling lithography of two dampening eczema-scaling murals showing a picaresque, if confused and hodgepodge, rural attempt at promoting regional historical trivialities that can never mask that this whole town is a bastion for losers to be dropped deftly at the spilt end of another’s bathtub in golden sylphlike Bathory. At either side of the building is corrugated underneath a monstrous ventilator shaft twisted into a pretzel. Mold is the salt no one can taste. The voices downstairs are increasing until the sky opens upstairs and eats Alexanderplatz again. The torment for him never ends. I am near elation, no longer a fist grasping a notion once only unthinkable.

Alexanderplatz's martyrdom has resulted in a fortune large enough for me to purchase a kiosk. Saturday, there is a person who arrives without water behind the absence of skin worn adrift. The third is all rags at my named price.

I plunder the riches of irony dry until uptick against another answer, but somehow vital, drawbridge of shredded throat closer than I thought is stinging from the other presence's zealous insistence. The violent thresher is an auction loud with obscure definition.
