MAJOR MARINEFORD SPOILERS.
gonna make a little rant on Deuace because they're silly and I love them and they need to be talked about more. also because while reading the biography of the Spade Pirates and Deuce, I found things which I now can't stop thinking about it.
Tumblr media
for those of you who don't know, Striker is that small, single-sitter boat Ace used to transport himself with, which was fully adapted to work through the power of his Devil Fruit — I haven't properly read Episode A but Deuce was the one who built that for him when he and Ace were ship wrecked on a desert based island named, Sixis.
Deuce recovering Striker and repairing it after Ace's death makes me sick to my stomach because oh my god, that's the boat he built for his LOVER.
could you imagine the surging amount of memories that would flood through Deuce's mind every time he travels with Striker ? memories of them in Sixis, of when he initially tried to kill Ace (😭), of when he first built Striker for himself and Ace, of him travelling with Ace on Striker.
Tumblr media
then there's him literally journaling his adventures with Ace and the Spades. I could imagine these times where Deuce would open up that withering journal and would read through whatever experiences he had penned down, glancing at the dates they were written on and just beginning to recall all of them.
his eyes visibly softening whenever he reads through wherever he described Ace's cheerful demeanour, reckless tendencies or whenever he would talk about Luffy and Sabo.
Tumblr media
him becoming a journalist who specialised in writing about the Straw Hats and Revolutionary Army is just so ohmyfuckinggod because just imagine — Deuce writing about something related to the Straw Hats or anything to do with the Revolutionary Army and he's just like, “They're at it again, Ace,” with this little fond smile.
Deuce refusing to publish anything about Ace despite Morgans' attempts at persuasion is so heart wrenching because his experiences with Ace are intimate and special, they aren't to gain the attraction of the public nor is it for their entertainment.
Tumblr media
the trust, the loyalty, the faith — oh, I'm sick to my STOMACH, I'm literally throwing up everywhere.
I'd like to imagine this sense of faith for Ace from Deuce is that he believes his Captain could go against all odds but also is conscious of how Ace is still very much human in spite of how strong he is.

"theoddest1: Eiichiro Oda shared his fave music/artists and one of them happened to be the song "Insane" by Black Gryph0n and Baasik (Gryph0n was the singing voice for Alastor in the pilot) Hazbin Fan's Tweet in Viv's likes: The One Piece creator is a Hazbin fan" Hol'up. Hangon. Are you...telling me...Oda happened to listen to a song that happened to be by the singing voice of Alastor and the fans (and Viv) immediately took that as "He's a Hazbin fan" ???? 💀💀💀 ((Based off the tweet Odd shared that Viv liked, my bad if I missed another tweet where Oda did in fact confirm he likes/enjoys Hazbin))
Looks to be that way!

Why Kuina’s Death Still Unsettles Us?
TW: mention of suicide, references teen/child suicide.
[I read a post about "falling down the stairs" might actually imply death by suicide. Kuina's death always bothered me a bit, and when Shimotsuki Koushiro said to Zoro, humans are fragile, did he really mean our bodies or our hearts? I still wonder. A few months back I had written a fic, a retelling of the events which led to Kuina's fall from the stairs, and I had done a lot of thinking while writing the fic. So all those ideas and thoughts I had then, have been rearranged and put here today.]
Tumblr media
I remember watching the Kuina episode like 19 years back. So for an 11-year-old me, that was it. I was sad that she was gone too soon.
But over the years as I grew up, read the manga and then kept rereading it over and over. I did feel her death was surprisingly given the off-stage treatment that was given to Lady Macbeth! Only an announcement was made of her death, and her face is covered in a piece of cloth! That was too sudden, unlike so many other deaths that followed in the story.
I did brainstorm this over the years, it really felt odd, she was a physically strong 12-year-old girl and as far as I know swordswoman/man have to be good at balancing and footwork, because the art of the sword is about full body movement so her falling down is really really really iffy.
Image from chapter 5
Tumblr media
And if we look at the Dojo architecture, there were no visible storeys to the building, I am sure she didn’t fall off a library step-stool or carpenter’s ladder. Then I found this Tumblr post, by Heeheemugee which said, falling down the stairs is a euphemism for suicide. Which makes sense! Like it totally connects in my head.
Though, sadly, I didn’t find any source to confirm this, as everyone on the internet told me it's untrue. But, you see, “falling down the stairs” is a euphemism which has been used for domestic violence victims, like in my mother tongue, when it's hard to explain to a child what happened to someone who died, we say the person has gone somewhere far, so may be falling down the stairs is more of an undocumented euphemism or an old reference Odachii picked from somewhere— he is known for this!
Image from chapter 5
Tumblr media
Another thing we should remember Kuina was onset of puberty, the stress of future, her father’s general view of female body being weaker, and changing bodily features might have plagued her more than we think— since after 1000 chapters we know Zoro’s teacher is likely from Wano, I think internalized and cultural misogyny was at play too.
Teenage and puberty is a vulnerable time, one misstep can lead to drastic actions, so Kuina taking her own life is not farfetched. Because we have young children who are so stressed or vulnerable or suffering that they think ending it is better than enduring it.
Image from chapter 5
Tumblr media
What has bothered me the most, is the offstage treatment of her death. I mean—we have seen most of the “characters whose death impacted the main characters' life decisions” die on stage in backstories so far, or we got a proper explanation of why someone is dead. We know Banchina died after an illness, Bellemere was killed by Arlong, Hililuk was poisoned and blew himself up. Only Kuina’s death we didn’t see, and it immediately happened just after both Zoro and Kuina had a heartfelt conversation about becoming the best swordsman/woman in the world!
I guess Oda chose “fell down the stairs” as the series was like 15 chapters till then. Or it maybe as simple as Odachii wanted to wrap Zoro’s backstory fast with typical “dead girl-friend of the grumpy emotionally suppressed lone wolf” to establish Zoro’s narrative as the one who carries the will of others!
Image from chapter 5
Tumblr media
Otherwise, we know Eiichiro Oda doesn’t shy away from depicting gruesome, terrifying or horrible deaths which parallels real life issues, he sneaked in a little panel of a grandmother praying and a mother holding a knife with an infant in her arms in Wano arc, because they were starving for days!
Image from chapter 918
Tumblr media
Or a pirate in human auction house biting his tongue to escape the humiliation of being sold as a slave!
Tumblr media
Images from chapter 502
Tumblr media
Hence, I think Kuina’s death doesn’t seem like an accident and feel like something sadder and heavier than we were led to believe.

One Piece: Water Seven Saga
Tumblr media
One Piece: Water Seven Saga by Eiichiro Oda (尾田 栄一郎)
I don’t know how else to begin this review other than to say that I am deep into One Piece now. This Saga is the one that solidifies it for me. Eiichiro Oda is an amazing writer and I am a big fan of his work (Just One Piece thus far but there is a lot of it). I don’t intend to imply that prior to this saga I wasn’t fully invested in the series, however it wasn’t until this saga that I realised that my heart was fully into the journey the Straw Hat crew were on and that I wouldn’t be able to put it down until the end.
The Saga opens on the Straw Hat crew heading to their next island and arriving at an island where they encounter a rival pirate crew with a penchant for challenging pirates to a “Davy Back Fight”: A tournament where pirates complete various challenges, with the prizes of winning each challenge being the taking of a member of the apposing crew. This arc is essentially filler, but it is still fun and goofy and brief enough that it isn’t much of a concern.
For the next two islands the Straw Hats visit, the story arc is very much a continuous one. The events in the city of Water Seven serve largely to set up the forthcoming events on Ennies Lobby, what is essentially the World Government Courthouse. The new characters introduced during their time at Water Seven bring a lot of excitement and growth for the world. With new powers, a cyborg, and a mysterious government organisation, the advancement of the world building is certainly felt. The betrayals of two Straw Hats also weigh on the emotions of the reader as Eiichiro forces a thoughtful consideration of what friendship and loyalty truly mean, and the importance of standing up for the people you care about.
The Straw Hats (and allies) siege of Ennies Lobby is a fierce battle against major odds. The sacrifices of their allies to secure the passage of the Straw Hats deeper into the building is a warming expression of trust amidst the severity around them. It also speaks to the personalities of the Straw Hat crew that they are able to so quickly inspire such faith from people they’ve met mere days prior. The display of love the crew shows in defence of their fellow crew member Robin is as heart-warming as her subsequent backstory is heart-wrenching. Her cry for help as her friends stand at attention ready to fight for her is a truly agonising scene as the hope of the moment floods the reader.
I want to comment particularly on Usopp’s development throughout this Saga. When Luffy decides that it is time to give up the Going Merry, it is hard not to feel for Usopp as he attempts to defend the ship he views as a member of the crew. It is understandable to see how Usopp may feel that if the Straw Hat crew so easily gives up the weakest link, that Usopp’s time with the crew will always be on the cusp of being over. It is endearing to see Usopp continue on with his crew, albeit in disguise, in order to fight for Robin alongside them. It is this effort, the whole crew fighting together to ensure that no member is left behind, that enlightens Usopp to trusting in his friends once again, and the final moments of the Saga where Usopp apologises for breaking this trust, that truly bring a tear to the eye.
Eiichiro’s crafting of his writing in this saga is beautiful. The action, and the emotion in every story beat, in every panel of art, is at the best it has been in the entire series. I’m glad I started this series as it has been extremely fun to make my way through, and very easy to invest in the world and characters.
Happy reading folks. Don’t think too hard about the book you’re on right now, just enjoy it.

It’s no secret that Eiichiro Oda follows some mythos and philosophy present in buddhism, such as Yaksha spirits, or Nembutsu teachings, present in his work with One Piece.
Particularly, what caught my attention was Sanji's character, where I will try to explain and chronologically analyze his own spirituality.
Sanji's story was slowly shown throughout the spawn of twenty odd years, first seeming one thing, later revealing a much more, intricate past, where I believe the pacing was intentional.
To summarize it, we need to embark on the journey of the Whole Cake Island Arc, where he is revealed to have been a prince for the most brutal, naziesque and powerful kingdom in the canonical universe. Horrifically abused, neglected and exiled by his biological family, he attempts to flee while still a child, encoutering the pirate Zeff, who will adopt him, showing him the first true act of kindness, and teaching him to master his skill as a cook. Later on, as an adult, Sanji meets the main crew and embarks on the main plotlined journey.
One Piece is distinguished by characters with very specific goals in mind, most being quite tangible, and achievable, even if a bit odd or extreme. However, Sanji's goal, that of finding the miracle sea known as "All Blue" feels to be more whimsical in nature.
Tumblr media
Described to be "heavenly" and pleasant, unknown, unheard of or even questioned by every other character in the story, with few exceptions. It feels as though "All Blue" is an allegory for a state of mind, rather than being a place.
This is where the true analysis begins, focusing on the symbolism behind One Piece, rather than the straightforward narrative.
We have a character who was raised without a real sense of self, due to trauma and neglect, isolated into the catacombs of the royal palace, with an iron mask, for an undetermined amount of time.
Around this time, he develops a need, or understanding, of a better place, stumbling upon a book describing "All Blue".
Sanji in this case, acts as an allegory to the lack of self we may experience through hardships, while simultaneously, giving a sort of spiritual advantage, in the search for the ego. Or rather, how to ban the ego. "All Blue" would be acting as the end of desire, which in buddhism, is described to be the source of suffering.
Suffering in particular, has a key importance in Sanji's story. In buddhism, we have the so called "Four Noble Truths", which Sanji seems to directly experience throughout the course of the narrative. Understanding the existence of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of the cause of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering, with a strong emphasis on love and compassion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sanji's personality is characterized by quirky ups and downs, but overall, it is often mentioned, how his primary concern is that of kindness. For example, by feeding the hungry no matter the person, or when faced with the option of either leaving his past abusers to meet their fate, or helping them, he chooses the latter.
Now, back to desire, we are not just mentioning straightforward emotions, but also deeply hidden ones. Sanji does not openly forgive his father, but chooses to help him out of the understanding that hatred in itself, would lead to a desire, and it would be through his suffering, that he could then appreciate and experience joy.
Tumblr media
Yin and Yang.
Now, it's a bit harder to write down the significance or legitimacy of a "psychedelic experience", other than it being an extreme situation, where one's values are questioned, faced with the possibility of a greater understanding, or existence.
Arguably, Sanji experienced at least two such events, one rotting underground, and one starving on a stranded island with no food or water, alongside Zeff, where the adoptive father sacrifices his own leg and almost his life, handing all scarce supplies to Sanji, before teaching him about control, about love, and self preservation.
Tumblr media
Sanji, indebted to him, embarks on a journey, knowing full well he'd need to somehow repay his debt, oftentimes poorly so, with the captain Luffy criticising his self sacrifing nature. This could be an allegory for clearing out any remaining, negative or past karma.
Going back to his biological roots, it's interesting to note some of the very present, and explicit symbolism scattered throughout the kingdom's layout, and family itself, where the five siblings are numbered, by name. Buddhism follows the symbolism of the five Buddha eyes, namely being the Physical eye, Heavenly eye, Wisdom eye, Dharma eye, and the Buddha eye. Interestingly, all siblings are color coded as well. Sanji's number, being that of Three (~さん), also has its meaning in the buddhist mythos, symbolizing divine protection, help and guidance.
Even the curled eyebrow, originally meant to be a gag for the Naruto ingredient in Ramen, can have its meaning, as there is often a spiral in the center of the face for meditative beings. It looks quite similar.
Now, for the even more explicit inspirations, let's look at the story more objectively. One where we follow a prince who has left the royal palace, in search of his own idea of heaven. Similarly, the story of Siddhartha Gautama, who became the buddha we know in the west today, was originally a prince, confined to the walls of his palace.
Upon leaving, he has four key encouters. That of old age, illness, death and enlightenment.
In that same way, Sanji meets an older presence, experiences starvation, has a very close encounter with death, before choosing to continue his path.
Upon Sanji's conflict against his captain, where he will ultimately need to make the important decision, between freedom and sacrifice, in the panel we see a massive tree with curled branches, similar to what is known as the Bodhi tree, under which the Buddha will reach enlightenment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sanji's implicit wish for invisibility could be more than a quirky character trait, where he may consciously or unconsciously be aware of his journey, a very striking metaphor to anyone seeking that very enlightenment.
Eiichiro Oda gave us what I believe to be a very clear story, with the depth of his writing, trauma, and ultimate search for compassion and love.

Tashigi: Pursuing Swords and Justice
"One Piece", the remarkable manga and anime collection by Eiichiro Oda, has captivated audiences about the planet having its fascinating plan, lively world-building, and colorful characters. On the list of wide array of heroes, the feminine protagonists be noticeable not merely due to their unique celebrities but additionally for their powerful functions in the series. From the daring to the treacherous, the nurturing to the inappropriate, girl characters in "One Piece" enjoy critical functions, constantly breaking away from clichéd expectations.
Nami - The Temperature Witch: The Straw Cap Pirates' vital navigator, Nami's journey from a small burglar to one of the very wanted pirates is inspiring. Her intricate familiarity with climate phenomena combined with her combat skills, especially with the Clima-Tact, makes her a power to be reckoned with. Her painful past, pushed by the increased loss of her adoptive mom and her village's subjugation, fuels her ambitions. Her evolution from the money-driven individual to a faithful staff member exhibits her level and growth.
Nico Robin - The Only Heir: An identity enshrouded in mystery and suffering, Nico Robin's subject as the "Devil Child" stalks from her power to read the forbidden Poneglyphs. Chased by the Earth Government and branded a offender at a sore era, Robin's search for correct history and her final alliance with the Straw Cap Pirates makes her history one of the most poignant in the series. Her information and peaceful demeanor frequently become important in serious situations.
Boa Hancock - The Pirate Empress: The Lizard Queen of Amazon Lily, Boa Hancock is both wonderful and powerful. Originally presented as a figure filled with delight and arrogance, her backstory reveals a traumatic past of slavery and abuse. Her fierce protective instincts towards her sisters and her ultimate fondness for Luffy include levels to her character.
Vivi - The Heart of Alabasta: Queen Vivi's dedication to save her empire from the clutches of the villain Crocodile resonated with many. Her serious sense of duty, along with her courage, makes Vivi an wonderful character. Despite her arc, she continues to perform a substantial position on the planet activities of "One Piece." ตัวละครผู้หญิงในวันพีช
Tashigi - Pursuer of Justice: A marine official with a keen fascination with famous swords, Tashigi often finds himself at odds with the devils, specially Zoro. Her feeling of justice and her communications with the Straw Cap Devils bring out the moral ambiguities of the "One Piece" world.
Modern Woman Characters: New arcs add powerful results like Major Mother (Charlotte Linlin) and her daughters, specially Charlotte Pudding. These characters, along side the others like Carrot and Reiju, keep on to include variety and strength to the list of woman characters.
While "One Piece" has confronted periodic complaint for the illustration of women, specially in terms of designs, it's undeniable that the line gifts girl heroes with level, difficulty, and agency. Their backstories, motives, and figure arcs type an integrated the main bigger account, creating "One Piece" a richer experience.
To conclude, the world of "One Piece" is as diverse since it is vast. The feminine people, making use of their benefits, vulnerabilities, ambitions, and doubts, play critical jobs in shaping that galaxy, proving that in the Great Line, sexuality does not establish one's possible or destiny.

tbh gaining weight recently kinda feels...bittersweet? double edged? something i have mixed feelings about? because i’ve recently discovered i’m both a gainer, a feedee/feeder combo, and a sub (both sub feeder and sub feedee), which is VERY complicated by the fact that for at least 7 years, i’ve been fat. like on one hand i really like the feel of my lower belly and waist fat and how...doughy? it feels??? because i gain most of my weight in my torso and namely my belly (both upper and lower), and it feels really...for some reason i feel happy about it on one hand??? like i’m getting closer to my true self or feeling more comfortable in my body?? but on the other hand it makes me feel bad about myself whenever i gain weight because i never intend to gain weight due to my (non fetish related) binges (i have...well, most people don’t think binge eating disorder involves NO restriction or control of one’s eating like my weird disorder is, but mine is psychological like binge eating and it usually involves strong emotions like boredom or self hatred or despair but emotional eating doesn’t fit either because emotional eating often has less severe connotations than the type of eating i do), and i obviously am not the conventionally attractive body shape even before i gained weight (which the weight gain wasn’t intentional and was for like...trauma and medication reasons combined) but like...the way my fat is stored is not the typical beauty standard unless in, ironically, feeder/feedee spaces. like i have average-to slightly large breasts sure, and really big muscular thighs, but that’s the only conventionally attractive appeal i have; i have small flat hips with a wide flat squarish butt and the biggest thing on me is my waist and belly to the point i can’t fit into most mainstream clothes as it is because of it. like...the fact that i fit feeder/feedee beauty norms oddly enough boosts my confidence a little bit because at least SOME community finds my odd shape beautiful, but i’m kind of depressed because mainstream people who like people with non “eiichiro oda tries to draw a fat person” proportions would never glance at me
so yeah, it’s kind of bittersweet but oddly enough since discovering i’m a sub and a gainer and a feeder/feedee switch i kinda like....being fat. it makes me think...i’m the ideal person who’ll get taken care of and doted on like a princess. which is stupid but yeah.

Something in the Way You Move… Makes Me Feel Like I Can’t Live Without You.
Disclaimer: One piece and all it’s characters belong to Eiichiro Oda, I just like to write about them.
ONE-SHOT.
Rating: T
Author’s Note: For @marimoandtangerine on Tumblr as a part of @zonamievents secret santa holiday event!
Takes place when Nami is sick right before they land on Drum Island, after Zoro tells Luffy to go check it out & theres a few minutes where he's alone with her.
also I'm sorry this is late & if its not not that great, Ive been in the process of moving & i had a really hard time writing something that's not smut bc im a heinous trash raccoon lmfao
Summary: He’d even noticed her wince when a bug bit her back on Little Garden. He’d believed her when she said it was nothing.
AO3 link.
‘How many times had he tried to convince himself that he didn't care for her?
She was too bossy. Too full of herself. Too greedy. There were a hundred and ten different reasons for him not to give a fuck about her. Maybe more!
But... as the days passed, and he spent more time with her, he began to notice things that he found really endearing.
Like - her patience with children, and how gently she treated them. Her ability to predict a storm by a slight change in air pressure. Her sense of loyalty. Her crafty, witty nature. Her smile. Her laughter...’
Zoro could hear Luffy chattering about the island that had just been spotted, but he was too lost inside of his own head to say anything more than, “Just go. I've got it covered.”
‘Before he knew it he was taking naps near her chair. Having drinking competitions to see which of them had the best tolerance. Listening affectionately while she explained something complicated about the weather and the ocean.
And lately, every time he thought about her his stomach twisted into knots. His chest burned like he’d been pierced with a branding iron. Sometimes when they drank together he wanted to kiss her. He wanted to touch her.
He’d tell himself over, and over, and over again that the only reason he thought about doing something so stupid was the alcohol. Not because he was attracted to her. Or because he liked her...’
His gaze turned to Nami now, and his forehead wrinkled in a small, confused frown. A little voice in the back of his head told him he could lie till he was blue in the face but that wouldn’t change the fact that he was falling for her.
‘After all, his instincts had been honing in on her since the day they’d met. He became hyper-aware of anything that might threaten her. If she was in danger of being harmed he felt like his heart would burst through his rib cage if he couldn’t protect her.
He’d even noticed her wince when a bug bit her back on Little Garden. He’d believed her when she said it was nothing...
But now she was lying in bed struggling to breathe. Her fever hadn’t gone down in days. Vivi had told them if they didn’t get her treated soon, there was a very good chance that she could die.’
The swordsman swallowed the stinging lump that had formed in his throat and forced back tears that wanted to leak from their ducts.
‘He didn’t like to think about the way he would feel if she were taken from him. It reminded him too much of Kuina... and of a bad dream from long ago that felt all too real. About a woman with eyes like his that he didn’t have the power to save.
He never wanted to experience the way part of his soul died along with the people he cared about ever again. He chose to keep anyone he met at a distance, that way their loss couldn’t hurt him. Alone he had nothing to worry about except himself.
Then he’d met Nami, and the rest of their little crew - and they turned his world upside down. He’d been doing such a good job protecting his heart but against all odds she had found a place within it. And now.. If this disease took her because he couldn't protect her...
He was sure that it’d break him-‘
Distracted by the sound of footsteps pounding across the deck above him, Zoro shook his head somewhat violently to break his thoughts up.
‘Fuck,’ he pushed off the wall and moved over to the navigator, bracing his hand on the mattress by her pillow. ‘He didn’t want to lose her - he didn’t even want to think about it anymore because it was making him feel sick.’
“We’re gonna get you fixed up real soon,” the swordsman said quietly as he bent over her, and kissed the space between her eyes. He lingered there for a beat before continuing, “You sit tight, okay?” As he drew back, a tender expression overtook his face that he wasn’t aware of. He lightly traced his way from her cheek bone to her jaw with the backs of his knuckles.
‘He didn’t believe in gods, but he felt half inclined to pray that this island had a doctor who could help them. He really, really needed her to be okay. He just... he wasn't strong enough to grieve for another person.
Not one that he, whether he admitted it or not, loved so deeply.'

One Piece: East Blue Saga
Tumblr media
One Piece: East Blue Saga by Eiichiro Oda (尾田 栄一郎) Okay so this one is really going to reveal the big nerd side of me. I started reading One Piece shortly after the live action Netflix series came out. My social media was suddenly flooded with live action, anime, and manga references that I did not understand but which hooked me in and made me want to find out what was going on. I also tossed up if I would write this review, admittedly I thought it might be better to restrict this blog to the reading I do that might make me look cooler. But what’s the point? It’s a blog about books, I am already clearly not a jock, and screw what you think, so what if I started reading One Piece? I chose to break up my reviews into each Saga as apposed to each chapter release or volume release, as this makes the most sense to me for convenience and also having complete arcs to review. The East Blue Saga is an introduction to the world and the various characters you are about to embark on a long journey with throughout the Manga. It builds the world and it’s sense of character well through short arcs introducing each new member of the Straw Hat crew The first story arc you of the series sets up the main character Monkey D. Luffy and why he sets out to be a pirate. It also introduces Luffy’s first crew member Roronoa Zoro, who at first joins reluctantly but reveals himself to be a immensely loyal friend. This introductory arc show Luffy’s great sense of duty and commitment to what he believes is good, even in the face of an opposing authority. This also introduces the power system within the universe. Devil Fruit, when eaten, grant the consumer a unique power that only they hold, at the cost of their ability to swim. The next story arc takes the two friends to a new island where a new crew member is introduced. Nami, a headstrong woman who is, for the time being, interested only in what benefits her as an individual, and has no interest in joining a team. This arc also introduces an enjoyable villain that sets up the interesting devil fruit vs devil fruit fights to come, and also a taste of the weird and wacky characters this world is full of. This arc also introduces the readers to a heart wrenching story from a side character. Something I know will continue throughout the manga. The following arc takes the now three member strong crew to a new island that introduces them to coward and serial liar Usopp. This story gives a great sense of the themes around overcoming great odds. It was overall a slower arc for me than the previous arcs but was fun nonetheless. This arc also introduces them finally, to their ship, the Going Merry. The next arc introduces the fifth crew member, the Straw Hats cook, a cool and stoic man with a penchant for becoming a blubbering fool around pretty women. This arc also comes with an emotional storyline, and introduces the reader to the massive threats to come when the crew finally enters the Grand Line. The next arc is the one that really hooked me into the series. It is heart breaking and emotional. The five main characters are put to their greatest test as a crew. The individual personalities and drives of each crew member puts them in a situation in which they must each overcome an internal obstacle and work together as a cohesive unit to overcome their enemy. The themes of oppression and control, standing up for what you believe in, and standing up for the people you care about are put on beautiful display laying clear what the rest of the series will embody. The final arc is short and mostly serves to finish off the saga and set up the next one, the crew are headed to the Grandline. This saga hooked me into the series. It is as fun and as exciting as I expected it to be, but what really kept my attention was the emotion it wasn’t afraid to play with and the themes it was willing to touch. This saga was still clearly just an introduction to the world and it has left me eager for what is to come. Happy reading folks. Don’t think too hard about the book you’re on right now, just enjoy it.

Little Bits and Pieces of Heaven
EASY, LOVE
One-shot #: 24
Disclaimer: One Piece (and its characters) belongs to Eiichiro Oda-sensei.
Reminder: I have no beta-reader. Any grammatical and spelling errors are solely mine.
Warning: OOC possible. One shot.
Rating: T
Note: This can be a companion story to Calm Before the Storm. I rarely write one-shots with an ongoing arc timeline but the story’s much better in Wano set-up. I originally tried a different setting but it didn’t work out.
Title is borrowed from the song Easy, Love by Tom West. It has nothing to do with the story plot but when I came across it, I immediately thought it suits this one-shot best.
Summary: Since when did falling for someone been so easy?
Nami silently observed from the upper deck of the Sunny as the samurais of Wano Kuni arrived from their journey from the Ringo region.
If the merrymaking at Kuri beach—where a barbecue celebration (one of the many they had for the last few days)—was already loud and boisterous before… it turned to a total pandemonium once the group dismounted their horses to join the party.
Luffy was hollering from too much excitement; yelling Zoro’s name as he bounded towards the swordsman—who was getting off his own horse—so he could glomp him.
Her lips quirked in amusement. Idiots. Look how happy they both are to see each other.
It’s been days since the green-haired man traveled to the northern region to pay his respects to the samurai Ryuma who gave him Shusui. Few of the red scabbards went with him…
…along with Momo’s sister, Hiyori.
Nami pursed her lips at that. And it immediately turned into a frown when she noticed Zoro assisting the beautiful woman down from her own horse. Even with Luffy still entangled around him, his rubbery arms encircling the taller man’s torso, Zoro was still able to effortlessly lift Hiyori and set her down carefully on the ground.
Hiyori looked absolutely pleased. Her hands lingered on Zoro’s shoulders as Luffy continued cheering right at his ear.
Then Sanji decided to enter the scene to gripe and swear at his rival before taking the now-surprised Hiyori’s hands off Zoro to lead her towards the feasting table in a frenzy of popping hearts, nose bleed and drool.
Nami would’ve blown him some kisses for that. The look Hiyori threw on Zoro’s way didn’t escape her eyes yet the dense man was expectedly was oblivious to it; his attention was completely on his captain as he tried to pry him off his person.
She studied Zoro for a few seconds. He was being unusually nice… if not extra nice to the former oiran. Well… Hiyori was, after all, the reason why he got his hands on a new and more powerful sword.
And apparently, as Brook had gossiped to her and Usopp one drunken evening, it wasn’t just the sword. The musician had caught them in a rather… compromising position when he happened upon them in the hideaway hut back in Ringo.
Her frown deepened. The familiar sensation of something weighing down her chest came back again. Just like that night when she first heard the story.
Her hands twitched involuntarily and she didn’t notice that she was clutching the railing quite hard.
“Nami? Are you alright?”
The navigator whipped her head sharply towards the voice.
Robin was standing a few feet away from her with a questioning look on her face. She just emerge from the library and was holding a book in her hand when she spotted the younger woman so deep in her thoughts as she gaze at party below.
“Sorry,” Nami said in a sheepish tone, feeling weirdly guilty at being caught spacing out. “Got distracted for a second. What was that again Robin?”
The archaeologist smiled as she approached her, not bothering to repeat her question. She peered down below. “Ara, they’re finally back.”
“Yeah…” Nami followed her gaze. “We can now set sail… that is if our captain is finally done with all these feasts.”
Robin giggled. “I doubt that. Now that Zoro’s here, he’ll probably want to celebrate again.”
“Hmmm…” Nami smiled at her. “I don’t know why I bother with that thought when I already know what’s gonna happen.”
“Fufufu… shall we join them?” Robin asked.
Nami brushed back a stray tendril of hair that escaped her pony tail and shook her head. “You go ahead first.”
Robin nodded. She patted Nami’s shoulder lightly before heading down the galley. From the looks of it something was bothering the navigator.
But for now it’s much better to leave Nami to her thoughts. She’ll eventually share whatever was on her mind when she’s ready.
“Oiiii Nami! Namiiiii!” Luffy was shouting from the shore, waving his rubbery arms enthusiastically to get her attention. “Look! Look! Zoro’s finally back!” He started tapping Zoro’s back with enough force to earn a death glare from the surly man as he growled for him to stop.
Nami rolled her eyes at their antics.
Zoro tilted his head to her direction and their eyes met.
They held each other’s gazes. Nami willed her face to remain expressionless as they continued their stare off.
The katana wielder raised an eyebrow at her, wondering why her reception was as cold as the northern region he had just recently came from.
And just like that, Nami tore her gaze away from him and turned on her heel disappearing from his sight.
Zoro was left confused. What just happened? She didn’t even bother to greet him and just stared straight at him like he was someone she didn’t know.
Did he owe her something?
Beside him Luffy stopped his antics and blinked, also baffled by Nami’s odd behavior.
“Ne, Zoro. Did you do something?”
-------------------------
“So did you do something?” Usopp queried, raising both eyebrows as he regarded the swordsman beside him suspiciously.
They were sitting on one of the feasting tables, eating and drinking. The former pirate hunter just told him about what happened earlier.
“I just got back!” Zoro hissed at him, slamming the tankard he was holding down the table. “How can I do something when I’m not even here these past few days?!”
Usopp shrugged. “Maybe you did something before you left.” He suggested, stabbing another slab of meat with his fork and taking a hefty bite from it.
“Like what?!”
The sniper shrugged his shoulders again unable to give an answer. He had long ago learned that Nami’s temperament is as unpredictable as the New World weather. Sunny with a high chance of thunderbolts. No use trying to figure it out.
“Oi Robin,” Zoro then turned towards the older woman who was sitting beside him. He nudged his head towards the Sunny’s direction. “What’s with her?”
Robin shifted her eyes towards the empty upper deck. Nami still hasn’t come down to join them and had probably barricaded herself inside the library. She shook her head apologetically. “I honestly do not know Zoro.”
“What did I do now?” Zoro grouchily asked no one in particular and Robin’s lips quirked up at his predictable reaction.
“Ara… Are you saying you did something?”
“No.” Zoro snarled as he eyed her indignantly. “I didn’t!”
“Maybe she’s just in one of her moods?” Usopp interjected. “You know how she is.”
“She probably is.” Robin agreed. “Best to stay clear for now Zoro.”
Clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth irritably, Zoro reached for a bottle of sake.
They were ok before he left. More than ok to be honest as he recalled their drinking session days before the raid in Onigashima.
So what happened?
-------------------------
The sound of the revelry was beginning to increase in volume indicating that it was starting to shift into full swing as cheers and singing filled the air.
Yet everything was lost on the orange-haired woman who was sitting by herself in the ship’s library. Her pretty brown eyes were fixed intently on the window just behind her mapping desk.
Oh she is in a mood alright. Ever since she realized what the heavy feeling that was settling inside her was.
By Kami, she’s jealous.
Yes indeed, she is.
She tipped her head back and groaned. What a nasty feeling.
And to think this was all because of that moronic, directionless swordsman.
She likes him. That she was sure now. That’s the reason why she was so down when she heard Brook’s story about him and Hiyori. And when he set off to Ringo with said woman in tow, not even bothering to ask if any of the Straw Hats wants to go with them.
And she’s not gonna even touch the scene she witnessed earlier when he assisted her down from her horse like he had been a gentleman all his life.
What else could have possibly happened to them? They’ve spent a lot of time together after all.
Zoro never mentioned anything about her that night she was drinking with him. And it’s not like she should be privy to it. What Zoro do or does is his own business.
She banged a fist on her mapping desk to stop the thoughts and winced when she realized that it was a damn rash action.
But the pain in her hand was nothing like the one wrenching her heart.
She smiled wistfully. And here she honestly thought there was something… between them.
Foolish, foolish thought! She chastised herself. How can she let herself be pulled in that moment with him!
And now… here she is.
Never mind that that was not the first time it happened and she realized it will not be the last.
She bit the insides of her cheeks. Now is not the time for this. She better straighten her thoughts and get a hold of herself. Some of her friends are pretty intuitive, they’d know at a glance that something’s up with her. She’s pretty sure Robin’s brilliant mind has already put two and two together.
Squaring her shoulders, she decided she’d come down to join the merriment after five more minutes.
Taking a deep breath to settle her nerves, she closed her eyes and…
The library door suddenly swung open; the heavy foot falls that followed it gave away who just entered.
Damn it! She’s not ready to face him yet!
She steeled herself when he crossed the room. She heard him grab a chair and set it down just beside her with a ‘thud’.
She didn’t even flinched at the sound. Normally she would be bitching about it. Complaining on how crass he is.
Instead she just kept quiet.
“What is it?” Zoro grunted; a bit peeved that she ignored his presence knowing full well why he was there.
“Nothing,” she answered after a few seconds, still not looking at him.
Zoro made a disapproving sound. He knows something is up. Nami cannot lie to him. He knows her too well.
“Spill.”
She remained quiet. And it was so unnerving to him. Whatever it was, he was getting the idea that it was serious. She was usually upfront with whatever she was thinking.
The silence that hovered between them was intolerable. It was pushing him over the edge.
Then Nami turned her head towards him. A determined look was all over her face.
And her lovely, brown eyes.
“I’m jealous.”
Zoro blanked at that. He heard what she just said—loud and clear.
And yet his mind cannot process what she finally decided to divulge.
He opened his mouth to say something… to blurt out an expletive, a retort.
But nothing came out.
Nami was looking at him intently, watching him. She watched as his usually nonchalant expression cracked, his cool composure completely obliterated by that phrase.
His face slowly colored.
There was no other way than to hit him with the truth. She readied herself for his outburst.
Instead he surprised her by stammering and turning into a deeper shade of red.
A chuckle escaped her.
What an adorable idiot he is.
She riveted her gaze back to the window. This is more than what she expected.
Amusing as it may seem, the heavy feeling from earlier still hadn’t left her.
Beside her Zoro continued spluttering.
That should be enough to keep him at bay. Nami thought amusedly.
She heard him took a deep breath before finally muttering a ‘damn it’.
And he suddenly leaned towards her, reaching out to grasp her hand roughly in his.
It drew her attention back to him.
He was grumbling something under his breath. She couldn’t quite catch what it was because her heart was thumping wildly inside her chest and blood was rushing to her head.
Zoro held her hand in his even as he refused to look at her. His face was so red now that steam would probably come out of his ears in a matter of seconds.
For a moment, Nami honestly thought he would combust.
But he still didn’t release her hand. Instead he held it tighter.
Nami chewed on her lower lip fighting the smile that wanted to grace her lips.
Just like that… everything felt better now.
Drat. She’s so screwed.
Nobody said a word. They remained quiet with their hands linked.
“So…” Nami began, deciding to break the silence. “Is this your way of—”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t evenlet me finished!”
“Just shut up.”
A hush fell between them again.
“So… you’re jealous?”
“Ugh. Shut up Zoro!”
