Today we also celebrate the Venerable Mark the Eugenicus, Archbishop of Ephesus and Pillar of Orthodoxy. Saint Mark was born in Constantinople in 1392 AD where he grew up in Christian piety. Many members of his family were clergy, and even hierarchs, and thus Mark was surrounded by the Orthodox faith from a young age. During this time, the Ottoman Empire was drawing closer to Constantinople, and out of fear of attack, the Byzantine Emperor John Paleologos agreed to make ties with the Roman Catholic Church in order to strengthen their armies and defeat the Ottomans. This union, however, required various theological compromises from the Orthodox in order to reunite the Eastern and Western Churches, especially the introduction of the Filioque clause into the Nicean Creed. Saint Mark, being elevated to the See of Ephesus, stood up for the Orthodox faith and was the only Eastern bishop to refuse to sign the decree of this council which agreed to this compromise. When the members of his own delegation attempted to persuade him to sign the document, he boldly stated, “there can be no compromise in matters of the Orthodox Faith.” During this council, he also refuted the doctrine of purgatory and as well as the primacy of the Roman Pope. When he returned to Ephesus, he urged his flock to beware of the snares of the West and to defend the Orthodox faith. Because of his steadfastness in the faith, he has been appropriately given the title “Pillar of Orthodoxy” along with Saint Photius the Great and Saint Gregory Palamas. The Great and Venerable Mark reposed peacefully in 1444. Doxology to St George el-Mozahem

He was born to parents: of mixed heritage: his father was a Muslim: and his mother was Christian

His mother raised him: in Christian manners: his mother brought him: to the Church since a boy

He saw kids his age: dressing up in white: and always wondered: why was it so

The Christian children: were partaking in the Holy Mysteries: and He longed to be: just like them

His mother told him: that he could not receive: so she gave him the eulogia bread: and the bread tasted sweet

Travelled to Damietta: when he was older: for baptism: and his family found out

He was tortured by his family: but was able to flee them: he then went to Damirah: where he was born

The people found out: delivered him to the Governor: and was imprisoned and tortured: with his wife Ciola

He was released by the Lord: and he went to Saft El-Kodor: with his wife: the blessed Ciola

He was then seized by them: for they knew of his story: and wanted him: to return to their faith

With a rope tied to his neck: he was dragged on the streets: he was given respite: to renounce Christ by Friday

He ran away to Bosat: where he saw a vision: that he was going to receive: the crown of martyrdom

The people tortured him with rods: and scourged him: with green palm branches: then tied him to the mast of a ship

The angel of the Lord: strengthened and healed him: the angel came: with the Virgin

He was ordered to be beheaded: receiving martyrdom: and was cut into pieces: and left to burn

The Lord saved his body: and let a Christian woman find him: he was shrouded: and delivered to his wife

They built a Church for him: to bury his body: Ciola and his mother: served the Church till death

Pray to the Lord on our behalf: O athlete and martyr: St George el-Mozahem: that He may forgive us our sins

"What example did Christ leave us in His Gospel? He covered sinners with mercy and generosity. He protected the harlot who was about to be stoned. He did not condemn her, but saved her, covered her with His Divine love, and gave her the opportunity to change: “Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more” (John 8:11). He also allowed another repentant sinful woman to anoint His feet and head and thus prepare His body for burial. He gave her a chance to become better, and even praised her love: “Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this Gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her” (Matthew 26:13)."

It is associated with the so-called dormition of the Holy Theotokos. Before leaving the earthly world, the 64-year-old Virgin Mary wished to see all the apostles once more, after which the angels took her soul. She was buried in a cave next to the Garden of Gethsemane, which remained empty on the third day because the Virgin was resurrected.
