Drago Bludvist: my one problem with How To Train Your Dragon 2
I love the How To Train Your Dragon (Httyd) stories in all its endeavors.
The shows, the movies, the fan made community, the art, it’s all been a very important part of my life. I started watching the shows and movies in my childhood, and am now rewatching the movies and joining the fandom as I grow older. It brings me joy in all aspects.
However. Both despite and because it’s a media I so much adore, I do not want to overlook its issues.
Or more specifically, one issue.
Drago Bludvist.
Goodness gracious I love this man’s design.
If you don’t know, Drago Bludvist is the main villain in Httyd 2. He is described as a “cruel, ruthless and twisted warlord whose main goal is to conquer the world with his enormous army of both humans and dragons. He is feared by all and destroys anyone who gets in his way.” By howtotrainyourdragon.fandom.com
Drago is a gorgeous example of good character design in my books. A tall, broad, imposing figure helped out by his asymmetrical dragon skin cloak. Light amounts of armor cover his exposed side, and beneath his dragon skin cloak is his prosthetic metal arm. His main weapon we see him use is his bullhook (something found in real life, it looks like a cross between a spear and a metal hook). Drago does use his spear in fighting, but we mostly see him using it to control the Bewilderbeast. (A huge dragon known to be the “alpha species” of all dragons. It’s integral to this movies plot as both the protagonists and antagonists each have a Bewilderbeast on their team.)
Drago has backstory, mystery, character history, motive, a good outfit, a powerful army, and challenges both the protagonists physical strength and the strength of their integrity. He is the opposite of Berk’s fairly new-found beliefs of dragon-human-harmony, and has a lot of dangerous power and therefor influence to back those ideas up.
But then where’s the problem?
The problem is that he is the only character in the whole first and second movies (to my knowledge) who isn’t white. Or at the very least is designed with physical traits of non white people. A list of examples; he has an olive skin tone, curly black hair and beard that he wears in dreadlocks, a dramatically hooked nose, and is voiced by Djimon Hounsou, who is one of if not the only black voice actor for the characters. So yes, he looks badass with his scars and deep voice and intimidating attitude, but they could have achieved this without designing his physical character this way.
Tumblr media
Having more diversity in Httyd would not be a problem. If the producers had chosen to add more ethnic or racial diversity to characters, awesome! The series is set in what seems to be a land of white Vikings (nearly all characters with red, brown, or blond hair), but it’s also fantasy where they have dragons and flaming swords, there is no reason sticking to that detail should be important.
Tumblr media
But they didn’t. The important thing is that they designed one character this way. The important thing is which character it is. The important thing is that they only designed a character like this when it was the big evil villain of the movie.
I get the “oh the unknown is scary.” With someone like Drago Bludvist who is meant to hold mystery, using his “from another land” background is a good reason as to why we haven’t heard about him before. As described in the movie, Drago is seen as “a stranger, from a strange land. Covered in scars and draped in a cloak of dragon skin.“
Tumblr media
In my mind there were two good ways to make new character designs work in Httyd 2. One, follow the form of the first movie and have everyone be some form of white Viking. This would continue following with the last movie as all the characters we met for this description. Two, diversity in all sides of the characters. Show that it’s not important to this movies plot to make your characters different races and cultures, affecting protagonists and antagonists alike. It being a movie to be enjoyed by kids and adults, there’s no harm in going into the second movie with the mindset of “hey, we know this concept works now, there’s no harm in making our characters more diverse because it’s not the sole point of the story, and it will reflect the diversity of our watchers more.”
Tumblr media
However they chose to do neither. And made a badass character whom I love, but cannot ignore that the designers made Drago a standout unnecessarily.
Were I designing him, I would not take away these traits. I would not redesign him without dreadlocks, the stylish beads in his beard, his intimidating personality or his role as the villain. But to do this successfully you need to look at the design of your protagonists too. Think, “who is getting an strong accent? Who is seen differently because of where they came from? Who is being seen differently because of how they look?” And if the answer to that is always the villains, then you’re doing something wrong.
Tumblr media
And that could be that. It’s about where my knowledge of the series ends, and thus most of my critiques. I’ve watched most parts of the third Httyd movie but not all of it, so my takes on it are less rounded. But I couldn’t help but notice when watching what parts I did…
Huh. The villain Grimmel the Grisly. Wow. I mean. They did it again. They didn’t do as much physical design coding... But. He’s one of the only main characters they gave a heavy accent (again) and an implied different ethnicity (again). To me it felt like he had less personality than Httyd 2’s villain, so I preferred Drago, but he was a stylishly designed man with stark white hair and an impatient attitude. That kind of villain can be fun for a lot of people and I get that. The fact that it’s only the villains being designed as anything but blond-red-brown haired white Vikings is a problem.
And hey. It might only be one problem with the series but it is a big one, and I’d hope it doesn’t become any more of a pattern.
To conclude; go fan over Drago Bludvist, hate him as a person whilst loving his character, notice the lack of diversity in films, and if you’re an aspiring film maker then start taking your own notes of how to do it better. Or at least learn how to hire a competent team of people to do it for you.
And fuck Grimmel the Grisly. Me and my homies all hate Grimmel the Grisly.
*Bonus Thoughts and Feelings*
On a similar topic which thankfully needs less explaining, this series of movies are an instance where disability isn’t shown as a horrid punishment. Protagonists and antagonists alike get scarred, burned, injured, and disabled. Hiccup loses a leg, Toothless loses part of his tail, Gobber always lacked his hand and leg (we learn the story behind it in Legend of the Boneknapper), Gothi is mute, and Drago Bludvist is missing an arm. Wether or not these are good representation of disability in media I’m not sure, but the attitude of this series towards it is a great start on its own. Hiccup choosing to customize his leg prosthetic in Httyd 2 was the most badass thing childhood me could’ve ever seen.
Passionately concluding,
G’bye!
[Feel free to add on or leave suggested edits/critique! I’d love an excuse to discuss more about the film or be corrected on spots I might’ve missed!]

(ooc: Revisiting the cutscene leading up to the final fight with Dist in Abyss for research purposes ((read as 'I want to try and build a thing in TotK')) and a bit of dialogue from Jade that I never really thought much of before stuck out to me this time. Specifically 'Hardly a day since you escaped and already you're back to your foolish games.'
Now, I never really paid much attention to this line before because the final stretch of the Abyss is a nonstop emotional rollercoaster. Now that I'm thinking about it, though, how much time passed following Dist escaping imprisonment and helping Mohs escape? The Jade Gang themselves don't find out about Dist's escape until just before Frings' death and Ion's death respectively, and they only found out about that because Guy heard it from Asch sometime after Van's defeat at the Absorption Gate. And then after learning that, the Jade Gang is running around regrouping, reeling from Ion's death, finding out about Natalia being Largo's daughter, witnessing Mohs being turned into a literal monster by Dist, killing Arietta, and also trying to figure out a way to eliminate the miasma.
So this is what I'm thinking now. Jade probably is exaggerating a bit due to frustration with Dist showing up out of the blue random to mess with them and once again going on about trying to reclaim the golden era of their childhood. And knowing Jade, I hardly blame him for being frustrated. Dist can't let go of the past. Dist is, naturally, a sort of dark reflection of Jade. That obsession with resurrecting Nebilim that he might have continued to cling to were it not for Peony likely disgusts Jade. Which... probably makes it easier for Jade to go about trying to kill him in the fight that follows. I mean, those who have done the Nebilim sidequest and boss fight know that Dist survives but still.
It's just really interesting, I guess. Once again, even after all these years of having originally played the game and doing multiple playthroughs since I'm still gleaning new information.)

Something about calling the Johto and Kanto region the KanJoh area just rubs Shay the wrong way.
Johto is not a really rich region, given it has to share a League with its neighbour and is a very rural area to begin with. It only has the one major city and is steeped in old tradition and culture. Being lumped in with Kanto just gives her the idea of some form of her home region's identity being ignored or assimilated in with Kanto. The two regions are incredibly different, and not to mention, Mt. Silver is the separation between them. The giant 'you need to have permission to get on the primal energy conduit' mountain is kind of a big deal.
Not to mention, in Ryuunosuke's time, the mountain was a sacred area where only her clan had the proper methods of traversing and harvesting resources off the mountain. Mt. Silver had a voice, and those were the primal Pokemon. If you did not respect them, you disrespected the mountain. Disrespecting the mountain meant death or worse.
Granted, Ryuuno would be happy to hear the regions now are getting along, but also be worried about having her culture overshadowed by misconceptions.

People have been talking about the need to discuss non-kin alterhuman experiences so here's a quick ramble about my otherheartedness and the peculiar dysphoria that's been difficult to treat that accompanies it for me.
Otherheartedness for me is... interesting. It's far more of an emotional experience than being otherkin, honestly. In both good ways and bad.
It's peace and wonder because they are something that is real, whether as a flesh-and-blood creature or as a well-loved concept often honored in art and writing. It's being able to look at them (or even bask in thier presence if they're Earthen) for hours on end without being bored. It's feeling as though your love for them forms a core part of your identity and you wouldn't be You without it.)
It's feeling a hole within because no matter what efforts you make to claim thier beauty as your own you will never truly Become, never be able to see yourself as one in a way that feels natural and effortless (I still claim them as link types but the dissonance is probably always going to be there and it Hurts). It's surrounding yourself with thier shape in the form of figurines, art, jewelry, even clothing (good old Mountain T Shirts before thier quality fell off a cliff...) to feel a bit of thier power and presence and hope that in some way, somehow, some of it will finally rub off on you and calm that yearning itch in your mind.

Rambling Conversations and Gnosis of Demonic Divine Relationships
Disclaimer: The demonic divine I connect with are from the Outer realms (previously mentioned on my blog- basically a different multiverse to put succinctly) and are not earthen demonic divine beings. However; given how the nature of Their energy appears and flows into the inner realms (of which earthen realm is a part of) and overarching, archetypal energies as well –  the outer realms energy, concepts and Truths can also be applicable and seen amongst the inner realms and beings. ( information from specific conversation with the DLs will be labelled as DL, other parts are more human thought, though still influenced and inspired by divine) Note: This topic is also assuming and based on the idea that one already has a respectful relationship with the demonic divine they are working with. And do approach and treat these beings with respect (similar to demonolatry ideas then not) (i.e not Solomonic or other bindings practices or treating them as “vending machines” or “wish-granters” etc). This is, as usual, a nuanced and layered discussion as well and delves a little into spousery concepts.
To start with; on the outer realms what I am mentioning here is the truth and nature of things in relation to the demonic divine that I have learned. To preface this topic; in the outer realms the demonic divine dark lords and ladies do not and are not married/espoused to humans (apart from very rare select case), they basically have no interest in this.
(DL part) From conversations with the Demonic divine and DLs I work with; it has been brought up that the demonic divine beings/energies in general (in a more overarching manner, though for a number of DLs it is also specific)- don’t care so much about the framing or “type” of relationship humans claim to have with them.
(By framing I mean for example; like godspouse, divine child, lover, devotee, practitioner, “friend” etc.)  It doesn’t really matter so much to Them (though it is still imperative to check with each specific demonic divine being as to Their preferences given Their individuality). The caveat here is that; so long as one is not deliberately lying about the type of relationship.
(This paragraph is more human thought then divine) If one is doubtful, makes a mistake or has misunderstood and makes the effort to change and learn from it- that is not the same as lying about it. Lying in this context includes among other things; making it up because one wants it to be true, to an extent continually projecting said relationship onto the being even when it is obviously not there or true. Whether this is done for “clout”, desperate desires or because it seems fun/cool, doesn’t matter- it is still problematic. The reason that lying about it is an issue (apart from the obvious), is that actively lying about the type of relationship is not conductive to actually having a healthy relationship with the demonic divine beings. Often if it continues, They will stop connecting to the human/practitioner/devotee etc at all and in the best case scenario; that is all they do.
DL part: One of the reasons the demonic divine doesn’t care (to a certain extent) about the framing/type of relationship is because; what actually matters more to Them, beyond this; is the connecting, the energy exchange and interaction, the growth/evolution/progress, the actually “having” of a relationship itself (among other things)- not how it is labelled (nor how humanity deals with such labels necessarily). In general the demonic divine tend to care more about the practitioner growth, pathworking, progress, evolution etc more than the framework a particular label gives them. However, it is important for one to check with the specific demonic divine they work with- to see what is the case for their specific relationship- as it is still individual.
Why Types of relationships can happen ( if They don’t really care in general)
(Human part) This is next part is where there is particular nuance and tbh it should be guided by the divinity one is connecting with- not just what the human or overly egoic self wants or desires. Even to project ones own desires onto a deity and push for that type of relationship (to the extent of ignoring all else) is problematic as discussed before. Consent from all parties is important.
In a more overarching and from the Demonic Divine’s (general divinity too) viewpoint; certain types or styles of relationship may be what is needed and of most “benefit” for a devotee for a specific time frame on that individual’s path and journey. It could be that in that particular point on that persons journey this particular “type” of relationship is what the person “most needs” (soul wise not ego wise generally) for their continued growth or “evolution” or to learn something from it. Among the myriad reasons, it can sometimes be due to the energetic makeup of the person or that connecting in a certain way/ relationship type could open and attune the devotees energy more to align with divinity and soul. One could be more open and find it easier to connect to the divinities in one style vs another. Generally for the Demonic Divine; especially if in Their guidance role, the relationships formed are frequently for a particular reason, regardless of whether those relationships are intimate (which doesn’t mean it necessarily includes romance or sexual engagements) or more platonic and teaching like etc. These reasons could also be beneficial to the demonic divine themselves- in some way shape or form. Ideally this is alongside humans but that isn’t always the case. At the least humans may not; from an egoic mindset without understanding, see it as beneficent to them. As a healthy relationship is not just one sided.
Some relationships could also transpire because the deity seeks a depth of connection for a specific reason as well, rather then a more “basic” level of connecting. And relationships may also change, it may not stay the same style/frame throughout the time connecting with that entity. It may have only been of help to that person’s growth at a particular time and then the style of connecting or relationship may change. As is natural in the flow of things.
The Dark Lords
Lord Lucifer for example is quite magnanimous about this, In an overarching sense in His relationship with humans. A lot of people may feel “love” associated or with interacting with Him or feel He “loves” them particularly. I do feel this is kind of a holdover from the Christianity idea of unconditional love of the divine for humanity. There are multiple reasons people may feel this; how their particular energy reacts to His, the feeling of divinity in a more intimate manner, the lightness, the enlightenment aspect, the association with Venus, being accepted for all you are without judgement, what He “represents” to people- to name a few. Some of these experiences are rare enough to experience among human society, so it can feel really healing, wonderful and awe-inspiring. As there is a limited understanding (also to the extent that each individual with their energy makeup, mental interpretation and reading of energy, occurs) of more nuances in emotional experiences; such things are easy to label and fall under what in understood as “love.” Since we don’t have anything else to base the experience upon, or interpret it by. It not to say Lord Lucifer doesn’t care or “love” in a sense- but that the human understanding of such a thing is very limited and so for Him it’s not really the “right” description to use- its more in depth and nuanced. And to understand what it is as this idea of “unconditional love” is kind of diminishing it. But again this is incredibly an nuanced arena.
Also to note; that there are multiple Lucifers- I speak of the one I connect with but also what He has indicated as is relevant to this discussion as it is being seen by other people who may connect differently. Perhaps also some inner world “Lucifers” act differently, but the archetypal energy here is relevant and is applicable to this.
DL: Lord Abaddon also mentioned on the “love” point; that generally with a human engaging with the energy of “love” (in a more bhakti like sense) or interpreting it as love from a god- can be a way to get closer to the vibrational stream of divine energies. This is as “love” as an energy ( and in the way humans can recognize it) is kind of “higher” vibration- as in it can be closer to divine energies and pave the way for a stronger connection. So it’s not wrong/bad that a human may interpret the energies as love, but it may not be what the divine being actually means or how They see it.
For the Demonic Divine I have also noticed and discussed with them; the Demonic Divine don’t particularly care about humanity as a whole/conglomerate. They may and do care about individual beings though. This can be either more intimately in that They actually care- or more in a working relationship way in that They care about and “value” the aim and goals being reached- as it is part of Their purview. This is not so delineated to one or the other- often it mixes per the practitioners/beings the Demonic Divine are working with.
With this, for a practitioner/devotee when they begin to approach the Demonic divine- to automatically kind of expect and assume the Demonic Divine to care about them or perhaps be more “parental” to them - is not a good way to go about it. The Demonic Divine don’t automatically care about or for you, just by you contacting (or even working with) Them. Sometimes They might if They have known you before or there is a reason for Them or a past. But it’s not automatically the case. Some pagan and polytheistic practices it is recommended to approach the divine as though a parent- like for Kali Ma it is traditionally recommended to approach Her as a child might a mother. Or in Kemeticism the Netjer can sometimes be seen as more parental figures. But this is not the case with the Demonic Divine.
Asmodeus for example (similar to Lilith in some ways) gets a lot of people simping after Him or going to Him for sexual topics etc, and believing they are engaging sexually with Him. Sometimes this may be the case (as He so chooses) but often they are not actually in direct contact with Him. As He explained ( on the level I connect with Him on- ie outer realms and in qlipoth) on the outer realm level He doesn’t actually personally engage this way often with people- even then it is usually for teaching purposes or ritual energies. But as this is part of His offices; He is fairly indifferent about it, it is energy exchange and He is getting energy directed toward Him which can be used to “feed” or repurpose it, or given as offerings. But this doesn’t mean He is having a sexual/romantic etc type relationship with the person.
Interpretation
It is also worth considering that how the humans interpret or see the relationship may not be how to divinity or divine partner sees it or thinks of the relationship. Arguably this could be true for a lot of these relationships, whether they be godspousery, divine parentage, being lovers, “best friends” etc. So, what the human sees and thinks of it as may not be aligned with the greater Truth of what it actually is. Also, in such spaces there can be at times a lot of projection onto the divine by humans- as to how they conceive of and understand the relationships. Often again this is not so aligned with the actual Truth of it. This is not to say this process and experience is wrong or bad. But that if one is in these kinds of relationships, it is worth examining and working on the projection aspect.
Most often I have found that the otherworld’s and their societies, people etc do not work like the human realm at all and so the idea of relationships and what they entail can be very different. And it is worth trying to understand and make space for that to be the case. Spending time being willing to learn about this is very important especially if you are in a more intimate or spousal relationship. For a healthy relationship truly- there will need to be compromises and understanding of the differences and working out how to manage it as a being human ( and all the limitations and intricacies of existing here) as well. This is even more so between spirit and human relationships. For example divine parentage- of two deities “making a child” is not often what it entails or even the kind of relationship they have with all who contributed. ( Its not a “nuclear family” idea). Even the child may not often be the same as the idea and ideal of what it is among humans. And even if a deity is a “parent” to someone it doesn’t mean that parentage holds the same place of value for that being as it does for a human. So being weary of this is beneficial I think for those engaging in spirit work.

Saw some discourse (can't remember where) about Crowley's sunglasses in the timeline
Vaguely I remember it said that him wearing glasses in the Job minisode, Land Of Uz (2500 BC) , seemed "out of place" / unnatural when later he doesn't wear them in Golgotha (33 AD), when they witness the crucifixion.
Originally in the season 1 timeline of their encounters, we first witness and therefore, were inclined to believe that Crowley's first debut of their signature shades was 6 years after Golgotha, in Rome (41 AD) .
But we find later that he actually debut a pair of tinted spectacles earlier in 2500 BC, which is year's before we were led to believe in season 1.
And even then another flashback minosode could change it yet again.
Now, we know that Aziraphale and Crowley's meeting in the Land of Uz is the first they've seen of the other since The Flood, Mesopotamia (3004 BC) * [Aziriphale makes a comment about it].
I did wonder if maybe this was the first time Aziraphale sees Crowley with eye-glasses. But I feel like he would've made a comment about them. Upon recognizing Crowley he sort of gives him a look up and down at their appearance, but he dosen't mention anything about it despite it being the biggest change in apparel worn. Prior it was mostly just variations on long robes of white and black respectively seen worn at the Garden (4004 BC) and at the flood (3004 BC).
I feel like Aziraphale would've said something about it, unless he had already seen Crowley in something similar previously. Or rather he understands that Crowley is simply blending in.
This leads into my PoinT...
That Crowley wears glasses in order to pose as a human (aka. Billdad the Shuite).
Crowley has a number of personal reason he prefers to where his Sunglasses (look cool and mysterious, hide his expressions/feeling, as an armour to protect himself etc.) But professionally, it would be hard to go about your buisness if people were freaked out by your serpintine features. So he wears them to blend In.
In the Job-isode, the times Crowley is wearing the glasses (aside from his first introduction) is when he is posing as the HUMAN, Bildad the Shuite, professional midwife/cobbler. He even fools multiple Archangels of heaven with his human guise.
Now compare that to when he isn't wearing them. After taking them off to taunt Aziraphale he doesn't put them back on? Why?
Because he isn't pretending to be the human family friend Billdad the Shuit . With Job's kids, He is acting as a demon, "sent here to destroy you all" (but not actually, just turn you into lizards, temporarily).
So I pose the reason Crowley wears glasses in 2500 BC, but not in 41 AD when he meets Aziraphale and re-introduces themselves as the now "Crowley", is because he wasn't assuming a human identity at the time. In fact he could've just popped round after doing some demonic work. He does mention how he "showed him all the Kingdoms of the world" (one of the temptations offered to Jesus in the dessert).
Eventually, approximately starting 6 years later in Rome (but possibly as far back as Job), eyeglasses become a permentant feature of Crowley's earthen appearance/apparel for year's to come. In fact I'm sure Crowly inadvertently invented all the stereotypes of cool/dangerous guys in sunglasses for the future.
I believe the glasses become a facet of their identity, as he creates it while living on Earth. As he begins to re-invent themself (beginning with re-naming himself) and develop his identity on earth he adopts the sunglasses more.
For convenience as times became more modern, but also because they proved useful in tricking both heaven and hell. Heaven won't recognise him and Hell can't tell what he's thinking or feeling. Nothing is given away.
Anyway that's ma'point. Better stop now before I start rambling more
I have more to say, I especially want to dive into the change in Aziraphale's demeanor with Crowley from the start of the Jobisode, towards the end as well as how it compared with their previous encounters shown in season 1.
Here's a link to a Youtube video by o0Zewy0o of Crowley and Aziriphale's meeting.
o0Zewy0o- Aug 5 2023.

In your description it says you identify as otherkin, cryptidkin, and divinekin, and I’m just curious about what that means to you, as I don’t know too much about this subject.
hello tysm for the ask!! sorry I'm not the best on this subject because I'm still very unsure about my identity but I will try my best! I might get some stuff wrong tho :')
Otherkin is identifying as something other than human. For earthen animals, the more specific term is Therian, which I may be but I'm just not sure anymore lol. As for cryptidkin, I'm not sure anymore? I think it relates to this weird feeling I have, im not sure how to describe it. It's like an odd feeling of comfort and horror that I really resonate with, I also have this image of myself (which I will link here) but that is also partly how I view my deitykin. I think it's both spiritual and psychological that causes me to identify this way. Deitykin is also hard to explain but basically, it's this strange disconnected and low-key hatred for humans (more so the things that humans do, not just humans themselves. I don't hate everyone! Just the bitchy ones ig idk how to describe that). It might also have to do with my cryptidkin, or I might not even be cryptidkin and it might just be deitykin instead. I kind of have this story that I'm not sure of its origins anymore, not really a memory but it's more like me trying to make sense of why I'm here. I'm a little too tired to explain in too much clearer detail so I apologize for that lol. But it's this feeling of attunement and divinity, I guess (I'm really trying to not sound like I'm arrogant because I'm not, I don't view myself as above human lives, or anything's lives really.) I kind of know who I used to be and what I was like, unfortunately I was being too silly about my disdain for humans that they kinda just kicked me out of deity club🔥 basically. This one is almost entirely spiritual. (Bro I forgot to mention, I'm pretty sure I was a god of strong weather, like tornadoes and thunderstorms specifically. I was not a high ranking deity, but still there, idk.) Sorry if this is a ramble because I uh.. I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I hope this helps maybe? Again TYSM for the ask I love asks!!!!

Hiya Trin! I’d love the commentary on this bit from your one whumptober fic :D It hurts so much, Time’s rambling is just. hhhhhh. much ow.
As gently as possible he pushes Time back onto the log, even as the older hero tries to wrench himself out of his grip. Twilight can feel the panic building steadily within him like water boiling in a kettle. If he can just get him to settle down before it grows out of control…
“You can’t–” The old man gasps, breathless and trembling. “Twi..Twilight…I have to…No!”
Abruptly, he reels back. Before Twilight can react, a fist collides with his face. The rancher stumbles. His grasp slips. With surprising speed, Time lunges for his sword.
“Ganondorf is coming!”
The fear is blatantly visible on his face now, terror audible in his voice. Twilight freezes, hand stopping halfway through its journey to touch his newly bruised cheek.
He’s not the only one with the arm strength of a moblin, apparently.
“Sweet Ordona…”
Time whirls and the rancher is forced to leap out of the way of his sword’s reach.
“Have to get the sages, have to save Zelda…” He takes a stumbling step forward. A particularly violent shudder races through him and the weapon slips from his grip to land with a dull thump on the earthen ground. “Get to the castle….can’t lose this time–all going to die…what a terrible fate…”
Twilight ducks down and snatches Time’s claymore before he can reach for it again. At that moment, Wild scrambles up to his side.
“Here!” He grabs the sword and presses a potion into Twilight’s hands instead. “Lemme get this out of reach and I’ll come help you hold him down.”
Twilight nods. He clenches his hand around the bottle, forcing an inhale through his nose. Time’s words have cut him straight to the core and left him winded and shaky. Never before has he seen the old man this vulnerable, this scared. It just isn’t right, to see his mentor gaze at him like a child seeking refuge from the monsters that stalk the night.
…a child with the world on his small shoulders.
“Time.” His voice trembles the slightest bit and he clears his throat. “I need you to trust me.”
Time freezes before him, teeth chattering, breath coming on haggard half-gasps. He crosses his arms tightly over his chest.
“N-no.” He shakes his head. “Only have three days. The clock resets — e-everything’s over. Have to sta…start again and I can’t… please don’t make me.”
He’s speaking pure nonsense now — at least Twilight desperately hopes that’s what this is — but it’s enough to shatter his heart. What nightmares has the hero endured to inspire a plea like this? What secrets haunt him?
…what regrets?
Ooh I had a lot of fun writing that part lol
So this fic — and this snippet — came out of a mixture of my combined mission to write what I want to read (which in this case was a Time sickfic XD) and to allow Time to be vulnerable. Because while none of the boys are particularly great at being vulnerable I feel like he’s one of the worst (in part because he kinda becomes their unofficial leader/parental figure leaving him no choice but to be strong). And what better way to get a guy to open up about all that juicy trauma than to give him a dangerously high fever? XD And if I could throw in some angst with Twilight (who I’ve realized during a recent reread doesn’t actually know much of Time’s backstory) learning in the worst way some of the stuff his mentor has endured? Even better.
So Twilight is thrown into this situation that no one wants to be in — seeing the terribly human weakness in someone they look up to. And I wanted him to see all of that weakness. I tend to forget how traumatizing OoT was for Time because Majora’s Mask’s creepy vibes made the haunting moments of that journey more prominent for me. But I made a point to make myself remember that here (hence the stuff about Ganondorf, the sages, and Zelda). Plus, at this point I headcanon that Time knows at least a little about the Downfall timeline and his fate in it. So, he references that too (saying that he can’t lose this time).
Basically, Time feels like a kid again. He’s scared, he thinks the sky’s gonna fall at any moment. But so does Twilight. Because here’s two extremes: the hero who soldiered on all day and the broken man who is still trying to save everyone despite being dangerously sick. It’s terrifying tbh. Plus this dude just punched him and he isn’t even sure what to think about that (besides OUCH and RUDE lol).
And Wild’s thrown through a loop too. He’s not as close to Time as Twilight is but they definitely are close. And he’s seeing some of himself in Time rn. He knows what it’s like to have your worst memories come back at the worst times. Which is why he immediately wants to jump in and help Twilight (he also feels bad his brother got punched lol).
Basically a bad time (hehe) for all
And Twilight’s definitely gonna have some questions for Time after this. He may not ask them outright (he doesn’t want to pry). But he always wondered what caused Time to become the Hero’s Shade and now he’s thinking…is all this crazy, nonsense-sounding stuff what basically tied him to this plane of existence? He needs some answers
I feel like I’m rambling so I’m gonna stop now lol but thanks!! <33

LES MIS LETTERS IN ADAPTATION - Forms Assumed by Suffering During Sleep, LM 1.7.4 (Los Miserables 1971)
“I strolled into the village, and perceived that it was a town. All the streets were deserted, all the doors were open. Not a single living being was passing in the streets, walking through the chambers or strolling in the gardens. But behind each angle of the walls, behind each door, behind each tree, stood a silent man. Only one was to be seen at a time. These men watched me pass.
“I left the town and began to ramble about the fields.
“After the lapse of some time I turned back and saw a great crowd coming up behind me. I recognized all the men whom I had seen in that town. They had strange heads. They did not seem to be in a hurry, yet they walked faster than I did. They made no noise as they walked. In an instant this crowd had overtaken and surrounded me. The faces of these men were earthen in hue.
“Then the first one whom I had seen and questioned on entering the town said to me:—
“‘Whither are you going! Do you not know that you have been dead this long time?’
“I opened my mouth to reply, and I perceived that there was no one near me.”

Just remembering that headcanon I came up with for Tear trying to hide when she's lost her voice from too much fonic hymn use and just... yeah, she's also definitely the type to try to hide when she's sick in general. Even when it's painfully obvious she's unwell, she'll try to act like she isn't. That's already well proven in canon given what happens with her and the fonon contamination, but still.

I like to imagine that the Stars specialize in cooking the cuisines of the cultures or ethnicities they’re associated with, either via general aesthetics or because of their creator’s ethnicity or native culture- If, uh, that makes sense, haha. Hope you don’t mind me ramblinggg- Also Ink gets more because he’s got two cultures I associate him with whoops-
Like! I think Ink would be good with French and Japanese cuisine, since Comyet has stated he’s french and his aesthetic is largely based on Japan, I believe? Or maybe just eastern Asian culture, but I’ve largely seen most people specifics Japan. From French cuisine, I really enjoy the idea of him making, like, macarons and crêpes (both French and Japanese styles!), as well as more savory stuff, like aligot and gougère (both involve cheese because for some reason Ink strikes me as the type to enjoy cheese???). He also strikes me as the sort to like drinks with fun names, like rinquinquin (a peach flavored alcoholic beverage!). From Japanese cuisine, I could see him loving mizu manjū (very pretty clear buns with a bunch of different fillings, they’re gorgeous and very artsy looking!) and shirokuma (shaved ice mixed with condensed milk and decorated to look like a bear!), and I could see him really enjoying age-onigiri (rice ball that’s been fried!) and takoyaki. Drink wise, since Comyet says he likes burnt food, I could see him enjoying akumochizake (sweet rice wine made with charcoal or ash), or maybe matatabicha (tea made from silver vine, because Ink has big cat vibes haha).
Dream would be good with Spanish cuisine (though I imagine he specializes in sweet no matter where they come from, but that! Isn’t! What I’m focusing on!). If we’re talking Spanish sweets, I see him being good at most of them, but I think he’d like smaller stuff or handheld foods the most, like pionono (small cylindrical pastry soaked with syrups and topped with toasted cream) or churros (which are actually commonly a breakfast item in Spain, he’d love it!), and for savory food, I could see him enjoying stuff easy to eat on the go, like pinchos morunos (skewers of diced pork or chicken marinated with olive oil and other spices) or pa amb tomàquet (toasted bread rubbed with tomato and seasoned with olive oil and sea salt!). For drinks, I could see him liking agua de cebada (malted barley mixed with sugar and lemon!) or calimocho (red wine mixed with cola).
Blue is difficult for me because I can’t find anything solid about associated cultures or where his creator might be from, so I usually imagine he specializes in Mexican foods (with a bit of American), mainly because he’s so associated with tacos and also I like doing research on different cuisines. Obviously there’s his aforementioned tacos, but I could also see him being very good with stuff like enchiladas or machacado con huevo (eggs scrambled with shredded dry beef!), and for sweets, I could see him making stuff like hot milk cake (butter sponge cake made with scalded milk) and marquesitas (a crêpe that’s been rolled like a taco and filled with a variety of sweet things). For drinks, I could see him making café de olla (coffee made with cinnamon and unrefined whole cane sugar which is specifically prepared in an earthen clay pot- Blue seems like a coffee drinker to me, haha).
This got too long but I wanted to ramble so I hope! You don’t! Mind!!!
My brain's only processing half of this but yes, I agree! I don't really imagine Ink as someone who drinks alcohol very often, but I also imagine he has a higher tolerance for it than most people. Dream also has a higher alcohol tolerance, but through self-conditioning rather than naturally high tolerance. I headcanon Blue and Stretch as Canadian, but it's interesting to see your headcanon too!
I imagine Dream as the main baker of the group, so I can see Ink going to him like "I wanna try this!" and showing (well, more like describing) the food or drink to Dream. And you can bet your entire bank account that Dream has snatched recipes from the two, particularly dessert recipes. I don't make the rules (yes I do).
