Behind the door, Jaskier was sitting on the floor, resting his head against the wood as his phone began to buzz in his lap. He knew before he even looked at the screen that it was Geralt. When he’d heard footsteps on the gravel outside, Jaskier had flown to his bedroom window to peek out, letting out a pitiful sound when he saw the familiar snowy white hair of his heartbreak. But he was stronger than that, and the pain was of his own causing. Jaskier knew he would have to face this. With three weeks left at the farm, there was no way he could avoid Geralt forever. It wouldn’t be fair to either of them.

Why the fuck had he thought dating was a good idea?

Well… it would have been bloody fantastic if he hadn’t fallen in love; a wonderful little holiday fling to keep himself occupied and then back to London feeling bright and refreshed. That would have been ideal, but Jaskier had known deep down from day one that Geralt was always going to be more than that. Even when he’d just been a godlike wonder, Jaskier had felt drawn to him, and with little Ciri too. The pair were just precious and brilliant and bright.

Why couldn’t Jaskier live in a world where he didn’t have to leave at the end of the month?

He could set a lovely studio space in the back of his very own cottage. Days would be spent on the farm with the alpacas and Valdo, or with Geralt at the stables. When they kissed goodbye at the end of each date, Jaskier wouldn’t have to worry about the finite nature of their relationship. There would be no need to worry about breaking Ciri’s heart when Jaskier inevitably left, yes they’d be left with the usual relationship drama… but it would be easier to navigate.

If only.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

“Fuck it,” Jaskier groaned and swiped at the phone. On the screen, a picture of Geralt and Douglas glowed as the call picked up, and Jaskier stared at it helplessly for a few seconds before gingerly lifting it to his ear.

“-you there?” Geralt’s voice cracked through the speaker, an echo of the voice just on the other side of the door.

“Yeah,” he mumbled, scratching at the back of his neck. “Yeah, I’m here.”

“I’m outside.”

Sighing, Jaskier closed his eyes. “Yeah. I know.”

God, it was suddenly so fucking hard to talk to Geralt. Before he stumbled a little and was easily flustered, but actually talking to his friend had never been a problem, quite the opposite. Apparently spilling out your tragic life story had that effect. It had all been going so well until his meltdown, and now he couldn’t seem to be able to put himself back together, no matter how desperately he wanted to. Every breath was potentially the start of a new attack, and the things he loved most dearly were the triggers.

“Have something for you, just as a friend if that’s all you want.”

A friend.

Jaskier felt tears prick in his eyes. No, it wasn’t what he wanted, but it was all he could allow himself. Every time things went well he destroyed them, and he refused to tear Geralt down with him. There would be no bad reviews, no paparazzi… none of that shit in Geralt’s simple country life.

“Sure.”

“But-” A glimmer of hope, but Jaskier stomped on it before it could burn too brightly. “I- fuck.” Geralt cut himself off with a growl, and Jaskier felt the door shudder as something collided with it, hopefully Geralt’s fist and not his head. It wouldn’t do to knock himself out over Jaskier’s anxiety. “I’m sorry, Jask.”

“I’m sorry too.” Apologies were easy, he could apologise until he was blue in the face.

Or at least he could these days. As a kid he’d just been a stubborn little shit and wouldn’t let anyone walk over him. Christ, anxiety was just the gift that kept on giving. What was it that his former therapist had said? Something about thanking people rather than saying sorry.

Fuck.

“Actually… no,” Jaskier grumbled into the phone. “Not sorry, just… Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Dealing with me?”

Dealing with his mess, was left unspoken.

He hated this. Anxiety sucked and he just wanted to feel like himself again, or at least who he was when he’d first arrived on the farm. With that in mind, Jaskier hung up the phone and scrambled to his feet, taking a deep breath before he unlocked the door. Enough was enough, he decided. Anxiety wouldn’t claim him, not today. No, he deserved a fucking break from crying into his pillow and feeling like the world was crumbling around him.

He deserved to be happy.

Okay… maybe he didn’t quite believe that just yet, but he would bloody well work on it, and that started with Geralt. No more pity parties, he wanted his friend back, and he wanted to enjoy the time they had together before he returned home. This was meant to be a holiday, not just an extended breakdown.

When the door swung open, there was Geralt looking as breathtakingly beautiful as ever. Long white hair that glinted in the sun was pulled half-back off his face with soft strands framing his jaw. There were dark circles under his eyes, matching Jaskier’s set rather nicely, but god, Jaskier had missed the warm glow of Geralt’s honey gold irises, the way they melted whenever their eyes met. Jaskier’s gaze dipped, taking in Geralt’s outfit. It was as casual as ever, none of the posh London twat vibes that Jaskier was used to. The nicest clothing Geralt seemed to own was the shirt he’d worn on the date, or perhaps his black leather jacket that was straight out of one of Jaskier’s wet dreams.

Fuck, how had he forgotten just how intoxicating Geralt was?

Jaskier swallowed, gripping onto the door frame to stop himself from reaching out and falling into Geralt’s arms. Licking his lips, he hummed to himself, bouncing from one foot to another restlessly. His heart was racing in his chest, and he wasn’t sure whether he liked it or not. On one hand, he knew that it was because of his attraction to Geralt, and for most of his life he’d found the butterflies and the fluttering heartbeat addictive. He loved falling in love, it was like a high that could never be found in drugs or booze, but now the aching rush of his heart reminded him of his attacks. So he cleared his throat and mentally counted beats in his head.

In. One, two, three, four.

Out. One, two, three, four.

Like a song, and with every count and every breath the never-ending melodies in his mind began to build. The gentle swell of the beat, the tinkling of piano keys, it was a song he was so intimately familiar with - Geralt’s song. It didn’t have a name yet but it was a motif that came to him whenever Geralt was near, and one that he had been itching to play out properly.

“Jaskier,” Geralt greeted, cocking his head, and oh, those eyes. They were so fucking gorgeous. Jaskier could get lost in them, never finding his way back to civilization, and he would die happily there. “I missed you.”

Jaskier laughed, a little manically to his own ears but he was hoping Geralt hadn’t noticed, and then smiled as brightly as he could because fuck anxiety. “I missed you too,” he admitted with a blush, glancing up at Geralt through his eyelashes. “I shouldn’t have avoided you.”

“You needed time, and I- I pushed for more than you were ready for,” Geralt muttered, stumbling over his words. “When people come here, from Yen, they need a break, not a relationship with a single dad who lives with his brothers.”

Both of them laughed at that, and Jaskier felt the pressure of the last week start to melt away. Pushing back from the door, he gestured to let Geralt back into the house until they were standing in Triss’s living room, the scene of the crime… Jaskier’s first attack, but also where his relationship with Geralt really started to grow from acquaintances to potential lovers. Jaskier grinned at the memory of them laughing over their pitiful attempts at knitting together, and then the caring way that Geralt had held him afterwards. They were happy memories, and ones that he clung onto to mask the pain and exhaustion of his panic attack. The laughter, the feeling of love and of found family, that’s what mattered.

“You know, I heard the single dad who still lives with his brothers is kind of cute,” he said slowly, flopping down onto the couch and smiling up at Geralt. Wearing his pyjama bottoms and messed up t-shirt, Jaskier was hardly on the top of his game, but he hoped the smile and banter would be enough to hide the pain that was aching in his heart. There was a ninety percent chance that he hadn’t brushed his hair that morning, but if not it was short enough that he could probably get away with the whole just got out of bed look… hopefully. Not that he was trying to flirt with Geralt, no. They had definitely established that flirting and kissing and fucking was off the table.

Or at least he thought they had.

Thinking back to their fateful date, Jaskier remembered that he had also pointed out that they hadn’t actually fucked, so their agreed upon one night should really become more than one. As two consenting adults who probably didn’t get a lot of action and were clearly attracted to one another… he deserved that much, they both did. One proper good fuck to resolve whatever tension was brewing between them. The chemistry would simmer back down into friends and Jaskier could move on with his life and back to London.

He ignored the lie he was blatantly telling himself, and leaned back on the sofa, letting his legs fall open as he cocked his head. “So, I was promised a present? Is it the cute single dad who-”

“No,” Geralt growled, his face flushing a delightfully deep red. In his hands was a brown paper parcel which Geralt was fiddling with, his nails digging into the edges. “No, I’m not a present, Jask.”

“You are a gift though.”

“Jaskier!”

“Sorry!” He giggled and threw his hands up in defence. Apparently, isolating really didn’t help… fuck he should have listened to Triss sooner. It was a miracle, one conversation and he was feeling a little better already. “Gimme!”

“It’s not that good, so don’t laugh.” The blush on Geralt’s cheeks deepened, dipping down his neck and beneath the flannel shirt that made him look like some kind of sexy lumberjack underneath that stunning leather jacket.

“Pinky promise?” Jaskier grinned, offering up his pinky which Geralt reluctantly took with a roll of his eyes. The pair linked their little fingers, and then the parcel was dropped into Jaskier’s lap.

Tearing at the paper, Jaskier unwrapped his present, giggling like a kid on Christmas day. A bundle of blue fell from the paper and Jaskier felt his eyes go wide. The wool was soft beneath his fingers, like the alpaca wool that Triss made at the farm, but obviously, unlike most of Triss’s wool, this had been dyed a pale blue - one of Jaskier’s favourite colours. For a brief moment, Jaskier thought the scarf had been bought from a shop, or commissioned from Triss herself, or, at the very least, Ciri. However, the moment Jaskier held it up, he knew better. The scarf was full of holes or backwards stitches that messed with the attempted pattern, a sign that it could only be Geralt’s handiwork.

And it was perfect.

Jaskier knew from experience that Geralt was not a proficient knitter, but he had taken the time to make something for Jaskier despite that, a reminder of their botched lesson together. Tears sprung to Jaskier’s eyes and, before he knew what he was doing, his arms were wrapped around Geralt’s neck, their lips pressed tightly together. He whined into the kiss, ignoring the fluttering of his heart in his chest, and let his fingers tangle in Geralt’s hair. For a heart-wrenching moment, Geralt froze and Jaskier could feel himself begin to fall apart once more, but before he could, Geralt was kissing him back.

It was so like before, and yet so much had changed since the car. They’d talked and they’d fought and they’d come back together in a crash of thunder and lightning. The passion hadn’t died one inch since their last kiss, and the intensity burned through Jaskier, fire in his lungs and veins. Before he could even comprehend what was happening, his hands were tugging at Geralt’s jacket, pulling it down Geralt’s unreasonably muscular arms.

Jaskier deepened the kiss with a moan, but the sound seemed to snap Geralt from his lust-filled haze, and he suddenly pulled back, lips swollen and eyes dark. The pair stared at each other for a moment, getting lost in each other’s eyes as they caught their breath.

“Are you sure?” Geralt whispered, reaching up to stroke Jaskier’s cheek.

The gesture knocked the air from Jaskier’s lungs and he leaned into Geralt’s touch. “Yeah,” he replied with a nod. “I’ve missed you.” Golden eyes flickered between Jaskier's own and his lips as Geralt obviously considered the words, making that now familiar bubble of anxiety drift up to the surface, prickling under Jaskier’s skin.

“Just-” Geralt cut himself off with a growl, and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Just don’t cut me off again?”

Jaskier shook his head, “I promised at least another night didn’t I? And Triss is away… and it doesn’t need to be complicated and sex isn’t love or a relationship and I can’t. Just. Leave. You.” The last words were spat out through gritted teeth, and Jaskier turned to face the floor. “Please?”

“What happens when you go home?” Came Geralt’s reply, a quiet question filled with soul chilling vulnerability that made Jaskier’s heart break a little bit.

And he didn’t have an answer.

“I- Can we not think of that now? Can we just… enjoy us?” There was another pause as Geralt narrowed his eyes, and then nodded with a soft sigh, a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “I really liked my present?”

“It’s a mess.”

Jaskier swatted Geralt’s chest. “Don’t you dare insult my gift! I love it. A very special person made it for me.”

“One day at a time?” Geralt pressed, making Jaskier roll his eyes.

“Yes, yes, yes. Now will you please kiss me. I have the house to myself and we don’t have to worry about Ciri or your brothers, and we’re not even in the backseat of your old truck. When will we ever have another opportunity like this? I want you, Geralt, I really, really like you, despite all the-” his wrist flicked out in front of his face. “Stuff.”

“Stuff?”

“I’m trying to seduce you here, but I’m a little rusty,” Jaskier said with a pout. “Work with me?”
