tornado and rainbow for the emoji asks! for all of them if you’re up to it, just Maria and Arianwen if you’re not 💖
Hooray, thank you so much! 💗
(OC Emoji Asks)
🌪️ TORNADO - what is the biggest change you've ever made to them? how have they changed from their original version?
Ooooh this was really challenging because I had to go back and think about what the earliest versions of them were like. From what I can remember:
Wen likes Alistair a lot more than she used to. She was much meaner to him in my early drafts. Their bond developed slowly, but I am so glad it did--I think their friendship is really important to her character development (as is her friendship with Morrigan, tbh, though I don't think I've posted about it as much here). But initially her dislike of Alistair was deeply tied to the trauma of her wedding--and because she'd already killed everyone involved, he was an easy target for her anger. But I ultimately feel like...idk he is just such a sad puppy of a man in the beginning of the game that she couldn't help but feel some sense of kinship. And I mean---her dog likes him, how bad could he really be?
Maria was a lot less...Well! Maria was in the periphery of both Your Fate For Mine and Wander, and while I don't think she is a dramatically different character in either I do think her voice is a lot more distinctive now than it was initially. She's funny, but I think the humor is a lot more performative than it was initially (which is not to say that none of it is genuine--only that more of it is a front than I gave her credit for at first). (I would write her part in Your Fate dramatically different now, especially having written her "in case I die" letters, but that is a totally different question).
Emma has stayed mostly the same, but I think I let her be funnier in Wander than I do when I write her now. But then she has been through some shit since then, so--maybe it's just natural character development. I've leaned into the researcher/scientist bit though, I think.
Salshira: The original concept for Salshira was "someone who would despise the idea of having a soulmate," and I think--given that most of what I write for her is after all that---she is a lot more mellow now than she used to be. Feels like she has to put up less of a front for sure.
Elowen: Well! I am sure she's changed the most, but I would have to write her fic again to know how and it is so long. I think she is sadder and wetter than she used to be, but she also sacrificed herself in the Fade because she felt guilty about the death of the Divine. So. Maybe she hasn't changed all that much after all.
🌈 RAINBOW - what advice would they give to their younger self?
Wen: You cannot bend your head so low that anyone will forget it still belongs to you. Never, ever stop fighting. None of them deserve your compliance.
Maria: Love the world around you as intensely as you can. You never know what you will miss once it's gone.
Elowen: Tell them you will not, under any circumstances, be the First. You are too young to carry the clan on your shoulders. Be a child while you can still be a child.
Salshira: You deserve to live just as you are now. There is nothing wrong with you. Nothing.
Emmaera: Don't let Papae go into the ruins alone. Under no circumstances can he touch the mirror.

Shadow 2005 remake in which the route through all the levels is mostly linear, you just complete them in different ways and there's only a few branches, i.e. Black Doom shows you the ARK flashback if you're halfway on his good side. Also, each playthrough is explicitly a timeline-reset, and only Shadow and Black Doom remember everything, and each new timeline begins with a different conversation between them. "Every day feels the same ... wait a minute." To unlock the Last Way, instead of getting all other endings, you need to see the ARK flashback in any route where it's available, and then do a True Pacifist Hero run. In the No Mercy route, Omega is the Megalovania final boss.

For a school assignment, I'm assembling an anthology around the theme of queer divinity and desire, but I'm having a hard time finding a fitting essay/article (no access to real academic catalogues :/ ), do you know of any essays around this theme?
below are essays, and then books, on queer theory (in which 'queer' has a different connotation than in regular speech) in the hebrew bible/ancient near east. if there is a particular prophet you want more of, or a particular topic (ištar, or penetration, or appetites), or if you want a pdf of anything, please let me know.

STEM SISTER SCUFFLE: ROUND 1 MASHUP 5
Dr. Olivia Octavius (Spider-Man Into The Spiderverse) vs Ms. Frizzle (The Magic School Bus)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dr. Olivia Octavius is a Quantum Physicist and Roboticist!
Ms. Frizzle is a Science Teacher!
Why you should vote for each contestant:
Dr. Olivia Octavius:
""If you stay in this dimension too long, your body’s going to disintegrate. Do you know how painful that would be, Peter Parker? You can’t imagine. And I, for one, can’t wait to watch." I love deranged evil women she is the character of all time to me"
"Dr. Olivia Octavius, also known as Doctor Octopus, is the secondary antagonist of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. She's also known as 'Liz' by her friends, one of them being Peter Parker's aunt May. She is an evil scientist, CEO of the science research & development company known as Alchemax. She's the scientific advisor for The Kingpin's inventions to open up portals to other dimensions. She's an evil woman in STEM girlboss."
"feral :)"
"Oh I heard you like mad scientist girlies???"
"I know she’s evil but I love her shes so cool. Have you seen her. I support womens wrongs <3"
"MILF. Evil. What more does she need? wowza"
"shes not the best shes the worst and she owns it. milf i mean. who said that"
"I mean. just look at her. she has the robo arms, the awesome hair. also if I recall, she's also been in science educational videos for kids"
"Proves herself as a competent fighter able to take on multiple spider-men at once, plus rocks the mad scientist look"
"Successfully works as a kids' science show presenter while also being a supervillain and working on sketchy projects. Is an absolute dork about her work and about cool phenomena in a way that's really endearing right up until she threatens to lock someone up to slowly die so she can study the phenomenon that's killing them. Probably put bugs in the microwave as a kid to see what happens.
Yes she did get hit by a truck in the fight and disappear but I fully believe she lived and ended up in some other universe.
1. She's a supervillain, she's definitely been hit by a truck before. 2. Out of everyone fighting in there she's had the most experience with this sorr of thing. While missteps are possible she would be going into it with some idea of what the risks are and how to deal with them. 3. Isekai truck trope 4. If she did end up in another universe she would totally find a way to keep herself stable there. She's got science knowledge and robotic limbs built for crime. 5. I like her and I think it would be really funny.
Why did I make this part mostly ""no she isn't dead"". It'd still be funny even if she was dead tbh.
I cosplayed her once and that is irrelevant to the poll but idk. She's fun."
"it's so rare to have female mad scientists in media like her, she's a role model to girls who want to commit crimes against the spacetime continuum everywhere. she's very important"
"She's really cute, too bad about all the murder and stuff :/ Women's wrongs, amirite?👍"
"She has a "For Science!" attitude that makes most male mad scientist look sane and safety minded. I would gladly be her intern/minion. <3"
"is only here to do science for Nefarious Purposes. science without any regard for moral cost. idk i love that this character type gets to be a milf for once. we love to see an evilgirl winning"
"mad scientist lady. cool as hell hair. evil girlboss."
"She's evil. She's evil and I love her"
"Evil milf with giant robot arms that loves chaos."
"Mastered multiple disciplines, managed to break barriers between dimensions, which even in superhero realms is a bit impressive. STEM girlies should be allowed to go a little evil/feral/unhinged. as a treat."
"She is evil! She is sexy! She employs usage of soft robotics into her prosthetic tentacles, is the head scientist at Alchemax, and quite literally built a machine that creates a portal to alternate dimensions! Get you a girl that can both make educational science videos and also rip open a portal to alternate dimensions under dubious moral conditions."
"she's sooooooo cool"
"She is a girlboss she tried to make a portal and while she’s a villain she isn’t the Evillest out there… babygirl head scientist Her glasses are shaped like octagons :3"
Ms. Frizzle:
"*gestures at entire magic school bus series*"
"Embodies the true spirit of scientific discovery: barely-contained chaos."
"She is very knowledgeable about a wide variety of sciences, and uses that knowledge to further the educations of many people. Teachers deserve the world; they do so much for so little in return. (shout out to Mrs. Goates)"
"She loves science and loves teaching kids about science. I love her. Idk I saw she only had one submission and that made me sad so now im here submitting her"
"She is an icon and has cool earrings"
"SHE'S SO COOL!!! She's so smart and so fun and genuinely just an icon. ALSO she has a little lizard on her shoulder. I saw an ask abt the submissions for Ms. Frizzle and the sender was the only person who submitted her.. I couldn't let this go. ALSO one of my professors irl called herself the irl Frizzle and she's a doctor of biology so make of that what you will"

fight club fanfic rec list <3
hiiiii. this is gonna go in ascending order of rating (beginning with general ending with unrated) and each fic will be marked accordingly.
I made this at my silly little desk job. getting paid to recommend fight club fanfic.
*markers denote my absolute favs, i would not be able to live or breathe without them.
here they are:
Sit. Stay. by redvineshark (Rated G) — this fic is sooo fucking cute it has some great moments with great dialogue between tyler and the narrator and it makes me chuckle. a very fun light read.
Indulgence by anorchidisnotaflower (Rated T) — this fic is very quick and also very sweet I think it’s a very fun version of their first kiss and it makes me mild to severely ill on any given day (affectionate)
*I am Joe's "it's complicated" status by DoubleMastectomy (Rated T) — this fic!! this fic is sooo important to me this fic opened my third eye this fic was giving me revelations. I am deeply obsessed with the dynamic introduced in this fic and the way tyler and the narrator and marla intersect oh it made me absolutely crazy. and the ending scene with the bus ride made me lose my entire mind.
A Reversal and Continuum by anorchidisnotaflower (Rated T) — these fics are the first two in a series, I enjoyed them so so much they do a great job at exploring tyler and the narrator’s dynamic post canon. the ending of continuum makes me kick my legs and giggle it’s so sweet ehehe.
*Leash Called Love by edsvard (Rated T) — this fic!! This fic is soo!! I’m absolutely obsessed with the dynamic between marla and the narrator in this one, their bickering back and forth that just ends up dissolving into a normal conversation half the time is so so good. another fantastic getting together fic for the narrator and tyler. eek!!
In the Backseat of an Impala by kingdomcomeundone (Rated T) — eee this fic is quite short but it’s sooo sweet I love fics that manage to capture a bit of fluff that still feels in character for them, and I think that’s done excellently here <3
Tease by jayyxx (Rated T) — this one is!! I loooove this fic i adore it. something something submissive tyler durden oh it has a chokehold on me i have visions of this fic while i’m trying to fall asleep at night.
*Just To Be Real by seven2seventy (Rated T) — THIS FIC!! this is one of my absolute favorites!! this fic makes me literally lose my mind it’s one of the only fics I’ve read from tyler’s pov that gets it so so right, it’s amazing it’s incredible it had me fathoming things i had never thought to fathom. I was talking about how much i liked this fic at manar’s graduation ceremony i was spreading the gospel out loud and in person. a masterpiece tbh.
your heart is a muscle the size of your fist by citrus_boots (Rated M) — this fic is another fun, quick one that explores the dynamic between tyler and the narrator post canon. I love reading these, they’re always so varied even though they often follow a lot of the same points, and this one does it spectacularly.
Trip My Wire by edsvard (Rated M) — this fic is sooo fun i think it’s a really interesting getting together moment for tyler and the narrator. I’m shocked i haven’t seen more fics that incorporate breathplay and the narrator’s tie. this fic had me shaking in my boots.
Sit-ups by catsinagraveyard (Rated M) — just another sweet, short one. exactly what it says on the tin. I love these characters so much (i am actively slipping into insanity).
*Bathtub Mermaid by load_star (Rated M) — THIS FIC WAS WRITTEN BY MY LOVELY FRIEND MANAR who i dedicate all my fics to because they’re the one who got me into fight club in the first place. I love this fic so much it makes me crazy and insane and so so happy. mandatory reading.
So, When Do I Get My Pony? by GlitteryV (Rated E) — this is a classic, this is one of the very first fics manar sent me, directly responsible for the spores getting to me. just a fun, smutty read.
*A Handshake of Carbon Monoxide by Weeklyoatmeal (Rated E) — THIS FIC!!! I am absolutely obsessed with this fic. I've been thinking about it all week!! It’s a great long one, one single chapter, absolutely phenomenal. literally had me shaking in my boots during my first read through, I really enjoyed this version of tyler and the narrator getting together and the ending scene is. hehe well it’s very good.
*too much, too late by TheWholeEatingBreadThing (Rated E) — do not let the incomplete label on this one frighten you off the chapter that is posted stands alone!! please this is one of my absolute favorites!! the dynamic is something i never really would have considered, but it’s written so well i enjoy it so much!! I think about the line “I'm ovulating right now and I'd rather have your kid than his” literally every day, no exaggeration.
Familiar Faces by Chommi (Rated E) — okay this one is actually incomplete, but I’m kind of obsessed with the premise of it?? everything posted so far is excellent and I love it so much, please if you read it leave a comment!! (and not just a “please update” comment, let the author know what you enjoyed about it!!) I’ve not seen a concept like this before and I find it very cool and fun.
kerosene dream by ictus (Rated E) — this is another classic. when manar and i started exchanging fics, this was the first one i rebounded back at them. it’s excellent. well written, good characterization, just an overall great read.
*recidivism (nouveau) by snuffbby (Rated E) — this. fic. oh GOD this fic. my ao3 history says i’ve visited this fic 38 times since my first read in march and i fucking believe it. this is my absolute favorite fight club fic HANDS DOWN. nothing beats this fic. literally the best getting together fic I’ve read about tyler and the narrator, incredible characterization, i love the way both of them are written, the narrators… narration, it’s SO SO GOOD. their dynamic as a couple makes me INSANE. it's got a great pace, not entierly a slow burn, more like a medium burn, and i reread the chapters where they finally get together so often. this fic made me fathom things i didn’t think i ever would, this fic influences everything i’ve written about tyler and the narrator, it opened my third eye in terms of how the two of them can fit together in a relationship. they make me crazy. please read this. it’s the best.
Exchanging Body Heat In The Passenger Seat by chemicalburntjack (Rated E) — another absolute classic. I don’t have much to say about this one other than it’s incredibly good, I love the dynamic they’ve got going on, feels very in character for the narrator and for tyler. another excellent getting together fic, they really would go 0 to 100 like this.
*King of the Wild Things by seven2seventy (Unrated) — another one of my absolute favorites of all time! I am OBSESSED with the religious imagery in this one, the way the narrator worships tyler ugh it makes me literally go crazy. this is another must read for me.
thanks for checking them out. if you find a fic off this list that you enjoy, make sure to leave a comment on said fic letting the author know what you enjoyed!! <3
also not to self promote but if you haven't, feel free to check out my own fight club fics. ehehe.

oh boy im really in the mood for a highschool au, de-aged derek sterek fics, could you rec me your fave so far?? thank you sm for all you do for this fandom you're a lifesaver!!!!
Sure! Try these ones.
Fly a Little Faster by  mirrorkill | 32K
Everyone knows when you go back in time, you shouldn’t step on an ant, just in case you accidentally kill your own grandparent or something. But what happens when you go back in time and, uh, accidentally interrupt the one event that apparently made the Grumpiest Alpha in Town into a ball of mindless manpain?
Well, if Marty McFly can do it, so can Stiles Stilinski. All he has to do is get Derek and Paige to fall in love before he gets pulled back to his own time. And before he makes anything worse. That’s easy as pie, right? Right?
Where Clouds Roll By by  ohanotherday | 22K
Derek gets de-aged, physically *and* mentally, and immediately gravitates towards Stiles instead of his pack. Why? Because he can sense that everyone else (Scott, Erica, Boyd, Isaac, etc.) is a werewolf (or were-something, in Jackson’s case), and his family taught him not to trust unfamiliar weres when he was on his own. He can also sense that Allison’s a Hunter or connected to them somehow, (maybe she smells like wolfsbane? w/e). So Stiles ends up having to take care of him until he’s back to normal. In the meantime, bb!Derek gets very protective of Stiles, and adorable shenanigans ensue.
This Time With Feeling by  Crimson1 | 36.1K
“Derek Hale, if you refuse to learn from your past…then you will be doomed to repeat it.” In which Derek is turned into a 16-year-old and has to stay with Stiles until they figure out how to turn him back.
Play It Again by  metisket | 63.2K
In which Stiles goes along with one of Derek’s plans and ends up in an alternate universe as a result. He should’ve known better. He did know better, actually, and that means he has no one to blame but himself.
“Laura wants to lure the kid in with food and kindness and make a pet of him, like a feral cat. Derek wants to have him arrested for stalking. They’re at an impasse. (And the rest of the family is staying emphatically out of it in a way that suggests bets have been placed.)”
Where The Inevitable Isn’t by  Survivah | 41.2K
Stiles has a magical thingamajig that’s supposed to get him out of danger. Trouble is, it took him really, really far out of danger. Like, to the point where he isn’t in the same universe anymore.
“A part of Stiles had been thinking that he’d come home, and just go, ‘hey, Derek, are we mates and you just haven’t said anything about it?’ and Derek would reply, 'now you mention it, we are indeed! Now come to my bedchamber, where we will have super hot sex and then cuddle after!’”
Now as Ever (All That Is and Has Been) by  venis_envy | 52.2K
Stiles can’t remember what happened to rearrange the time-space continuum, or how he ended up being pulled into the past. All he knows is that he’s there now, in 2003 Beacon Hills, with a teenage werewolf and a possibly-crazy veterinarian as his only allies.
Hormonally Yours by Nokomis | 1.1K
Stiles is on a stakeout with adorably teenaged Derek. Makeouts happen.
A Wrinkle in Time by PencilTrash | 2.8K
“But Deaton, how do we change him back?” “I don’t know, Scott.” “Does this potion contain wolfs bane?” “A little.” “What?! But he's… he is… ” Stiles watched as Scott struggled for the correct word, totally freaking out, and gestured at the twitching blanket in Cora’s hold. “… so small,” Scott murmured after a beat.
I’ll be right back (in 24 years) by AnaIsFangirling (Ana_K_Lee) | 48.1K
When Derek thought about time travel – and he did, a lot – this was not what he’d had in mind. He’d thought he would see his younger self, tell him to leave Paige alone and NEVER trust Kate Argent. He’d thought he’d get to come back once that was done and everything would be perfect. He never imagined having to relive his entire life.
The Time Traveler’s Prerogative by  weathervaanes | 9.2K
After the events of “117”, Derek doesn’t magically transform back into his twenty-five-year-old body. Instead, he’s stuck as a sixteen-year-old for an unknown amount of time. So the pack has to learn to deal with it.
Hold On, Hold Tight (make it through another night) by  callunavulgari | 2.9K
“You feel important,” Derek finally blurts out, the tips of his ears going red the second the words are out of his mouth.
Stiles blinks at him. “What?”
Baby-faced Derek bites his lip again, which is… distracting. “Something is wrong,” he finally says, slowly. “I don’t know what, because none of you are telling me anything—” and ah, there’s a hint of the old Derek. Stiles would recognize that scowl anywhere. “—but I know that everything smells wrong. And that I can’t feel mom anymore. I can’t feel anyone, except for you.”

What even is a language?
All tournament words will hava a short text about the language, but since I don't want to simplify until it's misinformation I need to open the can of worms on what a language really is. Join me, I promise the worms are interesting!
So, what makes two languages different from each other?
Think about it for a while. The first thing that comes to mind is probably that people who speak the same language can understand each other, while people who speak different languages can't. This criterion is called mutual intelligibility by linguists. This sounds easy enough, why is there so much post left?
Well, imagine two villages along a river, A and B. They speak slightly different from each other, but can understand each other. Same language, different dialects. Easy.
Now imagine there's a third village called C further up the river, closer to B than A where they speaking a third slightly different variant. The people in B and C understand each other, but speakers in A and C have a harder time and some can hardly understand each other at all. Do the people in A, B and C speak the same language? It would probably still count as one language since all of them mostly understand each other.
Let's make this more complicated! Imagine a village called D even further up the river. The same situation applies here, C and D speakers understand each other without problem, B and D speakers have a harder time and A and D speakers can't understand each other at all. How many languages are there now? Now imagine we add villages E, F, G etc and apply the same logic. Not so easy anymore
This situation is called a dialect continuum, where different dialects form a continuum so that people understand their neighbours but not all parts of the continuum. This is a common situation where linguists have to try and group languages together out of dialects based on which ones are the most similar.
Fun fact! This does not only happen on a village to village basis, but over larger regions. There is one hiding in plain sight right in the middle of Europe called the Continental West Germanic dialect continuum. There's more about it in the posts with German words, but in short: German is/was a few generation back two (or three) separate languages, the continuum also includes Dutch and "dialects" from Switzerland and Austria. Yet there is a Standard German based on one dialect. Anyway, on with the show.
Language exposure is another interesting worm in this can. Do people understand each other because their languages are similar enough or because they've learned another language? Imagine town X, where a language is spoken, and village Y outside the town. People from Y trade with X and often visit X, since it's a lot bigger. They understand people in X. People from X however, have no clue what people from Y are saying. This isn't mutual intelligibility since it only goes one way, but it will be relevant later on.
Using only mutual intelligibility gives us 6500 spoken languages in the world, as well as 200 signed ones.
This way of defining languages seems too complicated. Can't we just ask people what they speak instead?
Well, you can. This is another way of defining a language: What the people speaking it say is a language is a language. Easy.
On first look this seems reasonable. People know what their language is and will tell us where to draw the lines in the dialect continuum mess. This is the sociopolitical approach to language.
No. This approach intersects interestingly with the mutual intelligibility approach in that the number of languages suddenly skyrockets! There is no estimation, but people tend to call their own community a separate language from the neighbouring communities, even though they all understand each other.
Sometimes these peoples agree that they speak the same language if presented with the mutual intelligibility approach, there just aren't any words for the shared language. Then we can easily go ahead and call them dialects of a shared language.
But what if they just don't like each other and don't want to call what they're speaking the same language, even when they absolutely do? Or when there are political reasons for wanting to differentiate what their dialects, like connecting dialects to separare nation-states? Maybe these political divisions cause dialects to grow further apart, or different writing norms are implemented. Maybe it just happens as land is divided into countries with different policies and influences and a language community is split.
So if mutual intelligibility and people's own classifications don't match, should we just ignore the socio-political part? Often people agree that they speak the same language and let themselves be classified as such, but at other times it would work worse. The line between language and dialect is blurry and confusing.
Take the case of Swedish and Norwegian: I am Swedish and I can understand some Norwegian. It is also my understanding that people living along the border, particularly further north speak similarly and understand each other even better. Considering mutual intelligibility they could be considered the same language, especially some dialects. There is no animosity between Swedish and Norwegian (unlike Swedish and Danish, which might be considered in the same group except the differences are larger?). There are different spelling norms and probably different loan words/influences from countries that have been in contact with Sweden and Norway. Most important of all, it would still feel weird to call them the same language because of the nation-state connection and national identity.
Sometimes, this goes the other way around. Remember town X and village Y? What if the people in Y consider themselves speakers of X, while the people in X still can't understand them? Would it be the same language or not?
Another situation is the national state that really wants everyone to speak the same language. I have another example from Swedish, which is the former dialect Älvdalska (possibly anglisised as Övdalian?) which isn't mutually intelligible with Swedish. Still, for a long time it was considered a dialect anyway, but not anymore. It's its own language.
So what do we do?
Neither approach works on its own since things will get weird if we just pick one. The two big databases over language, ethnologue and glottolog, use a mix: It is mostly based on mutual intelligibility because that's more important for linguistics, but with some sociopolitics where it's reasonable. This leaves between 7100 (ethnologue) and 7700 languages (glottolog), both numbers including sign languages. See how the databases have vastly different numbers? Yeah.
Another fun fact: There are still languages previously unknown to linguists discovered every year. Some are dialects reclassified as languages and some are dying languages spoken only by older generations that were previously missed, as they aren't often spoken.
Anyways, thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed discovering that everything is more complicated than you think. There will be more posts like this to come. Also, to have it in the post: this knowledge comes from me studying linguistics and being very excited about it
