Ray Bradbury, “Dusk in the Robot Museums: The Rebirth of the Imagination,” 1980
For some ten years now, I have been writing a long narrative poem about a small boy in the near future who runs into an audio-animatronic museum, veers away from the right portico marked Rome, passes a door marked Alexandria, and enters across a sill where a sign lettered Greece points in across a meadow.
The boy runs over the artificial grass and comes upon Plato, Socrates and perhaps Euripides seated at high noon under an olive tree sipping wine and eating bread and honey and speaking truths.
The boy hesitates and then addresses Plato:
"How goes it with the Republic?"
"Sit down, boy," says Plato, "and I'll tell you."
The boy sits. Plato tells. Socrates steps in from time to time. Euripides does a scene from one of his plays.
Along the way, the boy might well ask a question which hovered in all of our minds the past few decades:
"How come the United States, the country of Ideas on the March, for so long neglected fantasy and science fiction? Why is it that only during the past thirty years attention is being paid?"
Another question from the boy might well be:
"Who is responsible for the change?
"Who has taught the teachers and the librarians to pull up their socks, sit straight, and take notice?
"Simultaneously, which group in our country has backed off from abstraction and moved art back in the direction of pure illustration?"
Since I am neither dead nor a robot, and Plato-as-audioanimatronic lecturer might not be programmed to respond, let me answer as best I can.
The answer is: the students. The young people. The children.
They have led the revolution in reading and painting.
For the first time in the history of art and teaching, the children have become the teachers. Before our time, knowledge came down from the top of the pyramid to the broad base where the students survived as best they could. The gods spoke and the children listened.
But, lo! gravity reverses itself. The massive pyramid turns like a melting iceberg, until the boys and girls are on top. The base of the pyramid now teaches.
How did it happen? After all, back in the twenties and thirties, there were no science-fiction books in the curricula of schools anywhere. There were few in the libraries. Only once or twice a year did a responsible publisher dare to publish one or two books which could be designated as speculative fiction.
If you went into the average library as you motored across America in 1932, 1945, or 1953 you would have found:
No Edgar Rice Burroughs.
No L. Frank Baum and no Oz.
In 1958 or 1962 you would have found no Asimov, no Heinlein, no Van Vogt, and, er, no Bradbury.
Here and there, perhaps one book or two by the above. For the rest: a desert.
What were the reasons for this?
Among librarians and teachers there was then, and there still somewhat dimly persists, an idea, a notion, a concept that only Fact should be eaten with your Wheaties. Fantasy? That's for the Fire Birds. Fantasy, even when it takes science-fictional forms, which it often does, is dangerous. It is escapist. It is daydreaming. It has nothing to do with the world and the world's problems.
So said the snobs who did not know themselves as snobs.
So the shelves lay empty, the books untouched in publishers' bins, the subject untaught.
Comes the Evolution. The survival of that species called Child. The children, dying of starvation, hungry for ideas which lay all about in this fabulous land, locked into machines and architecture, struck out on their own. What did they do?
They walked into classrooms in Waukesha and Peoria and Neepawa and Cheyenne and Moose Jaw and Redwood City and placed a gentle bomb on teacher's desk. Instead of an apple it was Asimov.
"What's that?" the teacher asked, suspiciously.
"Try it. It's good for you," said the students.
"No thanks."
"Try it," said the students. "Read the first page. If you don't like it, stop." And the clever students turned and went away.
The teachers (and the librarians, later) put off reading, kept the book around the house for a few weeks and then, late one night, tried the first paragraph.
And the bomb exploded.
They not only read the first but the second paragraph, the second and third pages, the fourth and fifth chapters.
"My God!" they cried, almost in unison, "these damned books are about something!"
"Good Lord!" they cried, reading a second book, "there are Ideas here!"
"Holy Smoke!" they babbled, on their way through Clarke, heading into Heinlein, emerging from Sturgeon, "these books are-ugly word-relevant!"
"Yes!" shouted the chorus of kids starving in the yard. "Oh, my, yes!"
And the teachers began to teach, and discovered an amazing thing: Students who had never wanted to read before suddenly were galvanized, pulled up their socks, and began to read and quote Ursula Le Guin. Kids who had never read so much as one pirate's obituary in their lives were suddenly turning pages with their tongues, ravening for more.
Librarians were stunned to find that science-fiction books were not only being borrowed in the tens of thousands, but stolen and never returned!
"Where have we been?" the librarians and the teachers asked each other, as the Prince kissed them awake. "What's in these books that makes them as irresistible as Cracker Jack?"
The History of Ideas.
The children wouldn't have said it in so many words. They only sensed it and read it and loved it. The kids sensed, if they could not speak it, that the first science-fiction writers were cavemen who were trying to figure out the first sciences-which were what? How to capture fire. What to do about that lout of a mammoth hanging around outside the cave. How to play dentist to the sabre-tooth tiger and turn him into a house-cat.
Pondering those problems and possible sciences, the first cavemen and women drew science-fiction dreams on the cave walls. Scribbles in soot blueprinting possible strategies. Illustrations of mammoths, tigers, fires: how to solve? How to turn sciencefiction (problem solving) into science-fact (problem solved).
Some few brave ones ran out of the cave to be stomped by the mammoth, toothed by the tiger, scorched by the bestial fire that lived on trees and devoured wood. Some few finally returned to draw on the walls the triumph of the mammoth knocked like a hairy cathedral to earth, the tiger toothless, and the fire tamed and brought within the cave to light their nightmares and warm their souls.
The children sensed, if they could not speak, that the entire history of mankind is problem solving, or science fiction swallowing ideas, digesting them, and excreting formulas for survival. You can't have one without the other. No fantasy, no reality. No studies concerning loss, no gain. No imagination, no will. No impossible dreams: No possible solutions.
The children sensed, if they could not say, that fantasy, and its robot child science fiction, is not escape at all. But a circling round of reality to enchant it and make it behave. What is an airplane, after all, but a circling of reality, an approach to gravity which says: Look, with my magic machine, I defy you. Gravity be gone. Distance, stand aside. Time, stand still, or reverse, as I finally outrace the sun around the world in, by God! look! plane/jet/rocket—80 minutes!
The children guessed, if they did not whisper it, that all science fiction is an attempt to solve problems by pretending to look the other way.
In another place I have described this literary process as Perseus confronted by Medusa. Gazing at Medusa's image in his bronze shield, pretending to look one way, Perseus reaches back over his shoulder and severs Medusa's head. So science fiction pretends at futures in order to cure sick dogs lying in today's road. Indirection is everything. Metaphor is the medicine.
Children love cataphracts, though do not name them thusly. A cataphract is only a special Persian on a specially bred horse, the combination of which threw back the Roman legions some long while ago. Problem solving. Problem: massive Roman armies on foot. Science fiction dreams: cataphract/man-on-horseback. Romans dispersed. Problem solved. Science fiction becomes scientific fact.
Problem: botulism. Science fiction dreams: to someday produce a container which would preserve food, prevent death. Science-fictional dreamers: Napoleon and his technicians. Dream become fact: the invention of the Tin Can. Outcome: millions alive today who would have otherwise writhed and died.
So, it seems, we are all science-fictional children dreaming ourselves into new ways of survival. We are the reliquaries of all time. Instead of putting saints' bones by in crystal and gold jars, to be touched by the faithful in the following centuries, we put by voices and faces, dreams and impossible dreams on tape, on records, in books, on tv, in films. Man the problem solver is that only because he is the Idea Keeper. Only by finding technological ways to save time, keep time, learn from time, and grow into solutions, have we survived into and through this age toward even better ones. Are we polluted? We can unpollute ourselves. Are we crowded? We can de-mob ourselves. Are we alone? Are we sick? The hospitals of the world are better places since TV came to visit, hold hands, take away half the curse of illness and isolation.
Do we want the stars? We can have them. Can we borrow cups of fire from the sun? We can and must and light the world.
Everywhere we look: problems. Everywhere we further deeply look: solutions. The children of men, the children of time, how can they not be fascinated with these challenges? Thus: science fiction and its recent history.
On top of which, as mentioned earlier on, the young people have tossed bombs into your nearest corner art gallery, your downtown art museum.
They have walked through the halls and dozed off at the modern scene as represented by sixty-odd years of abstraction super-abstracting itself until it vanished up its own backside. Empty canvases. Empty minds. No concepts. Sometimes no color. No ideas that would interest a performing flea at a dog circus.
"Enough!" cried the children. "Let there be fantasy. Let there be science-fiction light." Let illustration be reborn.
Let the Pre-Raphaelites re-clone themselves and proliferate!
And it was so.
And because the children of the Space Age, and the sons and daughters of Tolkien wanted their fictional dreams sketched and painted in illustrative terms, the ancient art of story-telling, as acted out by your caveman or your Fra Angelico or your Dante Gabriel Rossetti was reinvented as yet the second giant pyramid turned end for end, and education ran from the base into the apex, and the old order was reversed.
Hence your Double Revolution in reading, in teaching Literature and pictorial Art.
Hence, by osmosis, the Industrial Revolution and the Electronic and Space Ages have finally seeped into the blood, bone, marrow, heart, flesh and mind of the young, who as teachers teach us what we should have known all along.
That Truth again: the History of Ideas, which is all that science fiction ever has been. Ideas birthing themselves into fact, dying, only to reinvent new dreams and ideas to be reborn in yet more fascinating shapes and forms, some of them permanent, all of them promising Survival.
I hope we will not get too serious here, for seriousness is the Red Death if we let it move too freely amongst us. Its freedom is our prison and our defeat and death. A good idea should worry us like a dog. We should not, in turn, worry it into the grave, smother it with intellect, pontificate it into snoozing, kill it with the death of a thousand analytical slices.
Let us remain childlike and not childish in our 20-20 vision, borrowing such telescopes, rockets, or magic carpets as may be needed to hurry us along to miracles of physics as well as dream.
The Double Revolution continues. And there are more, invisible, revolutions to come. There will always be problems. Thank God for that. And solutions. Thank God for that. And tomorrow mornings in which to seek them. Praise Allah and fill the libraries and art galleries of the world with Martians, elves, goblins, astronauts, and librarians and teachers on Alpha Centauri who are busy telling the kids not to read science fiction or fantasy: "It'll turn your brains to mush!"
"Go, children. Run and read. Read and run. Show and tell. Spin another pyramid on its nose. Turn another world upsidedown. Knock the soot off my brain. Repaint the Sistine Chapel inside my skull. Laugh and think. Dream and learn and build."
"Run, boys! Run, girls! Run!"
And with such good advice, the kids will run.
And the Republic will be saved.

Animal Crossing Tips!
@therealjacksepticeye I am a true veteran of animal crossing... been playing since I was 7 years old. I figured I could share some tips! (Even though I haven’t played New Horizons, there are some general tips that seem universal) These can be used by anyone new and even if you’re experienced... maybe you’ll learn something new!
So, whenever you get anything new on the island, a fish, a bug, or a fossil, save it and immediately give it to the museum. This will allow you to see each new thing that you have caught and will fill up the museum!
When you’re fishing, don’t run near the water. You’ll scare the fish away! There are sharks in animal crossing, but they’re quite tricky to catch. I imagine you’ll need something better than a flimsy rod. You can tell which ones are sharks because they have a fin sticking out of the water. Sometimes when you fish, trash comes up, so it’s not always a fish.
Trees are quite fun. They have fruit and other things hidden as well. I know in old versions of animal crossing, sometimes furniture would drop out of the trees. The bees are scary but if you outrun them and get into a house fast enough, the risk is well worth it! You can get bell drops and peaches which are a good source of income. Since I know you were already the victim of a bee attack, you can buy medicine to get your eyes back to normal. (As of writing this, you just figured this out :p) Bees come out of beehives that, after you’re done being attacked, are quite profitable.
To clear up some things on the characters, the nook twins talk like that because they are both very excited and while one is talking the other one repeats what they’re saying with enthusiasm. As for the “cheeks” thing, all of the animals will have a nickname for you and sometimes they’ll ask you for one or if you want them to change the nickname they already gave you. Talk to the characters regularly. Sometimes you can catch them talking to each other and hear some interesting conversations. They will give you all of the gossip and even send you on missions.
One annoying thing about Animal Crossing is the time thing. I know when I was small I would want to play animal crossing when I was on the bus, but nothing was open because it was so early in the morning. Same thing for late at night. The only thing you can do for that is to change the time on your switch. Another annoying thing with time is that a lot of times things in the stores don’t restock or change until the next day, so you actually have to wait.
Now I’ll talk about some of the tools!
Shovel: shovels are very useful. There are little stars on the ground that mean something is buried. This can mean that there is either a fossil (which you should take to the museum), a pitfall seed that will make you get stuck in a hole until you click a button a few times (a mild annoyance, but fun for pranks when you’re playing with friends.), or there could be a gyroid (little dancing robot things that a lot of people like to collect, and in some old versions could be given to K.K.), there could also be some furniture, though that happens less often. Shovels can also be used to hit rocks. Rocks have been known in older versions to spit out money and crystals. I imagine that this is what Timmy was talking about with the peaches.
Nets: Nets do what you’d expect. They help you catch bugs. Bugs mostly come out at night and the most rare ones come out at dusk. There are also butterflies during the day, and they’re very pretty. (Remember, bring everything new to Blathers (the museum)!).
Fishing rod: Similar to the net, it’s pretty obvious it catches fish. Same thing with the bugs, the most rare fish come out during dusk and dawn.
Axe: It chops down trees, but I warn that it shouldn’t be done often. You’ll get less peaches if you chop down too many trees!
Watering Can: The watering can can be used for growing flowers from seeds that you can be gifted you you buy. I know that there used to be some mechanics that allowed for cross pollination and some interesting types of flowers!
Slingshot: Yes... There is a sling shot. The present you saw floating on a balloon happens when the time on the system ends with the number 4, so like 12:54 etc. They can have some money or some furniture. (Any furniture you don’t like can be sold, btw).
Some tools are more powerful than others, as you have already experienced with “flimsy fishing rod”.
There are a group of people that come later called the Able Sisters. Normally I wouldn’t say anything because you haven’t seen them yet, but I think it’s really important to talk to Sable regularly... it’ll be worth it. (You’ll see what I mean).
Obviously you don’t have to take all or even any of my advice, but I thought I’d offer it. There are a lot of things I haven’t said (which is hard to believe seeing how much I wrote), but it’s true. I can’t wait to see more!

Chapter 38 - Expansion
Itara was not alright.
Her only stroke of luck lately was that, when she exited the portal, she was outside the view of the general populace.  She battled her powers to keep them under control again, accidentally lighting a nearby trash can on fire, sending one of her Biters after a city bird that made the mistake of flying nearby, and half sunk into the ground when the purple mist covered the entirety of her legs.  She could do nothing about the summoned Biter, unfortunately, but after some time of deep breathing, she managed to pull the rest of her powers back under control.  At least long enough to inspect where she ended up.
She was upset and furious and the drying tears on her fur caused her face to itch.  The shoulders of her dress were scorched through, barely hanging on by a thread and threatening to give way at any moment.  Her broken arm throbbed from her landing on it and hitting the hard concrete and the ear she kept grabbing onto burned from both the heat of her hands and the claws that dug into it.  She was a wreck and didn’t much want to face the bustle of the city she could see and hear outside the alleyway she was hiding in, but she was too tired and scared to try to teleport.  If she wanted to find out when she was, as she’d determined she was still in Soleanna, she would have to get up and walk.
With a heavy sigh and a tired warning to the small purple Biter to stay near her – she couldn’t get rid of it, but she was less concerned with it being seen than she normally would be – she shuffled out of the alleyway and into the busy sidewalk of Soleanna.  It was nearing dusk and the bright orange that spread across the evening sky nearly gave the little hedgehog a heart attack that she hadn’t gone back nearly far enough.  But once she realized there were no stalls or decorations set up and the city crowds were nowhere near what they were during the festival she relaxed, though only barely. She refused to acknowledge the strange looks the occasional passerby gave her as she studied the area.  She was still on Main Street.  So she had only traveled back in time, not location.
Only.
A week ago, the ability to travel in time again would have been exhilarating, it would have been cause for excitement, relief, even solace and comfort.  Access to her powers again was all she’d wanted for so long now.  Yet, now that she had them, it was nothing of the sort. She only felt fury and grief, agony and indignation.  How dare Solaris come back now?  After being gone for so long, after everything he’s put her through, after ignoring her even when she nearly died, how dare he just show up all of a sudden?  He wasn’t there when she was kidnapped by Robotnik, he wasn’t there when Mira and Kelly died, he wasn’t there when Chaos nearly drowned them all.  He didn’t even do anything when one of his Biters nearly killed her.  Yet when she was out, with her friends, finally trying to live normally, that’s when he finally reappeared.  That’s when he came back to tell her she’s still needed.
When she’s injured.
When she’s healing.
When she’s finally made friends.
When those friends abandoned her.
That’s when he came back.
She didn’t know if she wanted to scream or cry, light the world on fire or save it, beg her friends to trust her or scare them off for good.  But all that managed to escape was a hiccup as another tear rolled down over the dried ones.  She reached up to rub at her face, wanting to hide her tears from everyone that walked past but also to rub the itching away.  What was happening right now?  The monster attacks, the robot from another world, Robotnik’s attempt to collect the emeralds, Chaos, then Gaia, now Solaris.  She passed an electronics store and looked up at the large digital clock in the window with the time, date, and even temperature on display.
It was April.  The weekend of her school trip.  Specifically, it was the day of the museum trip.  Right now, several hundred miles away, she was being taken to Robotnik where she’d accidentally told him about the robots and that she knew of Solaris’ monsters.  She winced at the memory, but her rage returned when she remembered begging with Solaris, even then, to help her.  She begged the timelines to tell her what to do, she begged her then-lost journal to tell her what to say, she begged her powers to let her see the correct course of action.  And even then, at such a crucial point, they remained silent.
Yet here she was, now, with access to her powers again.
Stop waiting for your ‘dad’ to fix you.
She looked down at her broken arm, scowling.
Quit pouting and do something about it.
She looked over at the tiny, confused Biter that sat beside her, staring up at her.
Fix yourself.
Her expression went blank as she considered Metal’s advice that day in the elevator.  Remembered everything Metal had said and done throughout that trip and after.  The killer robot that mistrusted her and even RK since the moment he reactivated-- who spent so much time telling RK she was plotting against everyone, who knew far more than her terrified classmates ever could, who had every reason to abandon them and had every reason to leave as soon as he was repaired.  Yet he stuck around.  He had opportunity after opportunity, at the park, the restaurant, the hotel, the university, to escape.  Yet he came back.  He came back to the park, he pulled her out of her head at the restaurant, he stuck around the hotel.  But most importantly, when she was kidnapped by Robotnik, while he was fighting Sonic, he went back to get RK so they could come find her.  They risked getting caught by Robotnik to come get her.
Metal Sonic, who had spent most of his existence searching for ways to escape Robotnik, who had every reason and even evidence no one else did to distrust her, who refused to call her anything but an anomaly for months. She reached up to grab onto her ear again in frustration and confusion, but stopped.  Even that, Metal had pried her hands off her ears multiple times to keep her from hurting herself.
Why?
Why did he even care?
She was only important when she was useful.  She stopped being useful long ago.  Even with her powers back all she could do was run away. She wasn’t important anymore.  She was only ever important to her father. Only important in bringing about the end of the world.  She wasn’t even useful to the one person she ever could have been useful for.  She ran away from him when he finally came back. She no longer served a purpose.
Why would anyone want anything to do with her?
Why did RK ever care about her?  Why did he ever listen to her in the first timeline?  All she did was lead him and Kipper to destruction in Crisis City.  Why did Kipper stick around in a timeline he was fated to be destroyed in?  She got RK and Kipper caught in that fire tornado. She nearly got RK and Metal caught by Robotnik.  She helped destroy the world before the reset.  She never even got her friends to safety during the festival, they ran further away from their parents, for all she knew they could have been attacked by another monster.  They were all caught in the fires of Soleanna… and she ran away.
Just like before.
Just like the mansion.
She was the only one who escaped.
She’d spent so long pushing Mira and Kelly to the back of her mind, purposely keeping her thoughts away from the hedgehogs in the mansion, the parents of the kidnapped little girl whose body she took over. She refused to think about them. Refused to think about the fire, the explosion.  But they died because of her.  Because she couldn’t save them.  Because she didn’t stop the fire.  Because she couldn’t access her powers.  She could have gotten them all out if she’d acted faster.  But she didn’t.  They died, in the hallway on the second floor, halfway between their room and hers, likely on the way to get her.  But she was already outside the mansion.  She was safe.
They lost their daughter and their lives… and it was her fault. Their daughter ‘Itara’ was gone and all that remained was the shard of Mephiles that took over.  ‘Itara’ wasn’t even her own name.  It was a stolen name, and she was reminded of this every time they called attendance at school or used her full name on papers.  The guilt that ran through every fiber of her being every time she heard or saw it, because she knew that wasn’t who she was. She should never have assumed she could live like a normal hedgehog.  She wasn’t one, she never had been, she never would be.
Mira’s expression when she told him the truth filled her head.  The pain, the loss, the fury.  He’d tried to hide it, but she could see it, plain as day.  He thought he finally had his daughter back, only to find out she was long gone.  That only this shard of Mephiles masquerading as his daughter remained.  He tried so hard to conceal the tears, but she saw them. She’d never felt so guilty in her life than the moment she told Mira the truth, and she would have accepted whatever backlash came from it.
And yet, there wasn’t backlash, was there?  In fact, he had comforted her.  She told him his daughter was long gone, and despite all the bitterness in his own eyes, he hugged her… and asked her not to tell Kelly. He was willing to keep her around, despite her not being their real daughter.  It was possible it was for Kelly’s sake, so she didn’t have to lose her daughter twice, but it wasn’t the response Itara had been expecting.
But they were both gone now.
She scowled down at her hands, looked up at the clock, and then down to the still-waiting Biter.  How far back could she travel?  She was out of practice, she was exhausted, and half her power was in a troublemaking little doll running around messing up musical equipment in Soleanna. But she’d gone back a month this time, if she rested, she could go back another month easily.  She had seven months between her and the explosion, seven jumps at the current rate.  Maybe she could push it further the more practice she got.  She’d gone back two-hundred years once before; seven months should be nothing in comparison.  She just had to get used to her powers again.
Even damage can be used, if you’re smart enough.
RK sighed as he looked around the empty living room.  He wasn’t surprised, but he was still concerned. Itara hadn’t gone home, wherever she disappeared to.  It was still possible she went somewhere else, but he had a strong feeling it was somewhere out of his reach.  Metal was downstairs in the lab getting the defense systems activated, he’d done a quick run around the neighborhood and outer edges of Soleanna to look for the missing time traveler but found no sign of her.  He had, however, realized how quickly Solaris’ destruction was spreading. Even without Iblis around to cause it, Crisis City was starting again.
Monsters were multiplying in droves, fires scorched the sky, and the ground cracked and burned throughout the city, moving outwards.  The sections of city that Dark Gaia had already caved-in filled with fire as magma exploded from below and buildings collapsed under the heat.  RK got Lynda and Simon home as soon as he found them and returned home, himself, in hopes that Itara was there.  Instead, he found Metal activating the defense system and no sign of neither the time traveler nor the still-absent ghost doll.  As much as he would have preferred to stay out of the God business, he supposed they had no choice but to get involved now.  He was glad Metal had already started on that.
Lynda had never sobered up so quickly in her life.
One minute she’s making sure the mobian behind the music knew how to do her job, next thing she knew, the world was on fire and the kids were missing.  If it hadn’t been for the shockingly quick reaction of the magenta hedgehog she’d been harassing by the stage, she would have joined the many unfortunate victims of the festival as a monster crashed through the dance floor and nearly dropped a beam on her.  Every moment between that point and her and Simon arriving home again thanks to RK was such a blur that Lynda hardly recalled any of it.  She vaguely remembered a flash of light down the street, finding Simon in an alleyway with Sparky, and RK finding them to take them home. He ran them home again, like he did that one day in the city, but she hadn’t seen Sparky or Itara after that.
However, whatever safety should have been offered by the comforts of home never came.  The events of the festival were apparently only a sign of worse to come as fires scorched the sky, even all the way out in their neighborhood, and the earthquakes reached their once quiet, isolated home.  Lynda did what she could to calm Simon, assuring him it would be fine, but no matter what she said, her reassurance never reached him.  Even when she brought his games to him, in an attempt to distract him, and assured him he could stay home until everything cleared up again, he only stared at the empty handheld screen with a troubled expression.
But his refusal to play his games was the least of her concerns.  As she did her best to go about her normal routines the next morning: coffee brewing, a long shower, a change of clothes, the house shook.  Since last night there had been one or two, relatively small, easily mistaken quakes.  She only noticed because it had knocked a couple frames over.  But this morning, as she was headed for the kitchen to get her coffee, the entire house shook.  Frames fell over or off the walls, cups shattered in the kitchen, the walls quivered as dust fell from cracks in the ceiling.
She bolted for Simon’s room to find him already sitting up in his bed, staring, wide-eyed out his window, and yelled for him to get under his desk for cover.  He whipped his head around to stare at her but nodded and scrambled for the desk next to his bed to curl up underneath it.  Lynda followed suit and wrapped him up in her arms, but hazarded a look out the window to see what caught his attention.  She almost wished she hadn’t.
Despite the violently shaking ground, right outside Simon’s bedroom window on the sidewalk was another one of those horrible monsters. A massive golem, oozing molten lava, lighting the grass it touched on fire as the cement melted around its lumbering feet, stood outside though Lynda couldn’t tell which direction it was facing. Even as the ground shook, the golem stood still, almost as if it were scanning, studying the area, but as soon as the quakes stopped, it moved.  Lynda froze, kept Simon wrapped tightly in her arms, and watched the terrible creature to try and determine where it was headed.  It lumbered about in the melted cement before taking a step onto the grass next to it.  Lynda’s heart nearly stopped as it rumbled forward.  It was headed for their house.
Her entire body shook, but she darted up from under the desk and pulled Simon out of the room just in time to hear the outer wall crash under the creature’s fist.  She only stopped long enough to debate which direction to go before deciding on the back door and instructed Simon to keep up and not let go of her hand.  He whimpered behind her but she felt his grip tighten as she led the way through the back-kitchen door and around the opposite side of the house.  The monstrosity continued to crash its way through their home behind them, making quick work of the wooden structure, while Lynda wondered where to go from there. Was the monster after them? Or was it simply destroying the first thing that moved?  Where was the safest place to go?  Who was the safest to go to?
RK.
She tightened her grip on Simon again and ran around the side of the house, but her hopes of outrunning the creature were quickly dashed as it turned towards them and crashed through the remaining side wall to reach them again.  She wasn’t sure who screamed, her or Simon, but all she could think to do was to get to the echidna.  He could fight them.  She’s seen him fight them.  She had to get to RK.
But the golem’s steps were much larger and it was all she could do to push Simon out of the way of its swing.  Maybe she could at least get Simon to RK.  She yelled at him to run for it while she tried to grab the golem’s attention, scrambling to her feet to stand between the golem and her son. But Simon was too terrified to move. Despite her best efforts, despite her yelling and pleading, he just couldn’t move and the golem brought its arm up to swing once again.  It could easily crush them both from this distance and there was nothing she could do about it.  She snapped her eyes shut and flinched, bracing for impact, still yelling at Simon to run for it…
Yet when the immense fist crashed to the ground, Lynda felt nothing.  The thud echoed in front of her and the golem screeched before another thud reverberated through the street.  Lynda’s heart nearly leapt out of her chest and it took her several seconds to realize she wasn’t dead, but she slowly forced one eye open to find out what had happened.  The first detail she registered was a long, immaculate blond ponytail and a glowing sword that disappeared soon after as the figure in front of her shifted to sheathe it.  But the sweltering heat of the golem’s fist drew her attention directly in front of her as she screeched at the close proximity.  The smoldering, detached fist was mere inches in front of her, but the rest of the golem’s body was behind the approaching figure, unmoving and cut clean down the middle.
Several seconds of baffled silence passed before Lynda realized the figure was speaking and turned her attention to them, to thank the mysterious savior, but his appearance caught her thanks in her throat. The figure was mostly human in shape and facial features, though he sported a particularly sharp gaze and cold, blue eyes, but most of him was covered in dented metal platings of some kind. Everything from the thick, rounded arm covers, tall, knee-high boots, chest plate with strange green orbs, shoulder armor, and even helmet were all metallic and… robotic.  Despite him saving her from the golem, she took a subconscious step back and eyed him warily.  A Robotnik robot?  With everything that’s happened, now Robotnik was invading their neighborhood, as well?
The robot realized her apprehension and threw his hands up in defense, explaining in a clearly forced calm tone, “I won’t hurt you.  I’m simply looking for someone I believe resides in this neighborhood.  I’ll take you to safety first, but if you could point me in their direction, I would appreciate it.”
Lynda narrowed her eyes further, but looked back when she felt Simon grip onto her leg.  Whether she trusted this robot or not, she knew they needed to get out of the streets. It was dangerous even here now. “I’d very much like to get inside.” She looked towards her destroyed home and frowned.  Well, she supposed she had no choice but to go to RK now.  The robot asked if she had somewhere safer to go once he followed her line of sight and she nodded, turning back towards the direction she’d been going, “there’s a mobian family that lives down the street.  They’ve fought these things.  We’ll be safe with them, I’m sure.”
The mysterious robot nodded and escorted her the rest of the way down the street, to ensure sure she made it as well as to get the information he needed.  They said nothing more until they reached the house, however, as soon as Lynda tried walking down the driveway, she bumped into some invisible force and jolted back. Her brows furrowed as she reached up to try and determine what she’d bumped into, but as she did, a crackling and light vwom echoed around the house and the invisible wall was no longer there.  Lynda could only stare in confusion, but continued forward to knock on the door. The mysterious robot beside her looked on edge from the incident, but continued on in silence.
Lynda breathed a sigh of relief when she heard the door unlock and sighed when the red echidna appeared in the door, “RK… thank goodness. Please, it’s not safe out here.” But her explanation stopped short as she realized his sights weren’t on her, but on the robot beside her.  A dangerous scowl spread across the echidna’s face as he held his claws out towards the ponytailed robot.
“How did you get here?”
Once more Zero held his hands up in defense, “I’m not here to fight this time.”
RK shifted his stance to plant himself firmly in place, “shame, I’m in the mood to destroy something right now.”
Lynda looked back and forth between them, confused, before questioning the mysterious robot, “you were looking for RK?”  RK glanced briefly at her with a glare before returning his scowl to the other robot.
“Not technically,” Zero answered with a quick glance around the street, then settled his gaze back on RK, “I’m not here on Robotnik’s command, lower your claws.  I’m here for the time traveler, I-.”
Before he could finish his explanation, however, and before either him or RK could react, Metal Sonic shot past RK and tackled the other bot back onto the lawn.  Zero rolled back to throw him off, but Metal only spun back around and smashed into him again with a sparking claw, narrowly missing as Zero rolled to the side and darted back to his feet.  Metal stood, his entire arm lit up, ready to strike, red eyes glowing furiously, as Zero pulled the sword from his back again.
RK joined Metal’s side before long, leaving a baffled and confused Lynda and Simon standing on their porch, but waved Metal down for a brief moment.  “Metal, stop. Let him talk first,” he instructed, but shot a scowl back at the other bot, “but he’d better talk fast.”
Zero eyed them both cautiously, but stood straight and sheathed his sword again as a show of good faith.  He truly wasn’t there to fight and he intended to make that apparent. “As I said, I’m not here to fight. Robotnik and I separated after Station Square, I’ve been investigating on my own since.  I only found you because I saw you leaving the festival yesterday but lost sight of you afterwards.”
“And why should we believe you?” Metal hissed.  He lowered his sparking, but his stance remained poised to attack.  The last thing he wanted to deal with, on top of everything else, was Robotnik knowing their location.
“Because there are clearly bigger problems in this world than Robotnik at the moment,” Zero stated.
“You said you came for ‘the time traveler’,” RK questioned, his eyes narrowed, “what did you mean?”
Zero studied him, unsure how much to divulge, but once again, there were bigger problems at hand.  “The hedgehog girl you came to rescue.  She said she could travel through timelines before but our conversation was cut short and I’d like to continue it.”  RK and Metal exchanged glances, their own stances lowered ever so slightly before their gazes returned to the other bot.  Itara told him about being a time traveler?  Why?  Before they could question it further, however, Zero added, “We should go inside – the defenses are superior.”
RK and Metal debated the wisdom behind letting the other robot in, silently, to varying degrees of rejection.  Metal didn’t want to hear anything the other bot had to say and didn’t care what he wanted and would prefer to leave him outside their base.  RK, however, while still on edge about the other robot, wanted to know more. Eventually, RK won the silent argument and ushered everyone inside with a command to Metal to get the defense systems back online once they were.  Metal grumbled angrily, but headed down to the basement while RK remained upstairs with Zero, Lynda, and Simon.  There were going to be some uncomfortable conversations soon.

What if Tony Stark really were the villain of the Marvel universe?  How would that work?  Tony himself is about to find out, as he battles his inner demons (and some outer ones, too) across a multiverse of infinite possibilities.
Tony sat up straight across from the female cop and folded his arms across his chest, determined not to let her intimidate him. “If that was Sid,” he said, “are you Nancy?”  He immediately thought he should have said Marty instead… Marty would have been funnier, but too late now.
“I’m Officer Zsivoczky,” she said.
“‘Nancy’ it is.”  Tony sighed heavily.  “Look, I know you guys think I killed Pepper.”  It was a struggle even to say that.  “I didn’t. I wasn’t here.  The guy people saw was not me.  He was from another world.”  Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the lawyer twitch, and added, “I know how it sounds, but seeing as New York City was half-flattened by aliens a couple of years back, I’m sure you can suspend a little disbelief for this.”
Nancy was not interested.  “Where’s her body, Stark?” she asked.
“Not in this reality,” Tony insisted.  “The other me, the bad guy, he took her away.”  The other me.  Now he sounded like Bruce.  They were going to think he had multiple personalities or something.
Her eyebrows rose.  “You admit there’s a body, then?”
“No!”  Tony put his head in his hands.  “I can get her back, but you have to let me go.”  If he had a suit… and some of that energy from the tesseract.  SHIELD had a bunch of that in storage from their experiments with it.  He’d read about that in the files he’d downloaded.  They would have moved it now, with all their secrets out, but maybe he could figure out where to.  He and Dr. Foster had talked about the resonant frequencies they’d need.  He could find that other reality and get her.
“Where did you put her?” Nancy demanded.
“I didn’t do anything!” said Tony.
“Our client is done answering questions,” one of the lawyers announced – probably, Tony thought, because his answers were embarrassing them.  “I’m sure you are aware that Mr. Stark suffers from post-traumatic stress, and your unfounded accusations are…”
“They are hardly unfounded!” said Nancy.  “We have eyewitnesses to Mr. Stark meeting Ms. Potts at the LACMA and putting her in a car.  We have the car in question, with her hair and his blood in it.  We have him, looking like he’s had the hell beaten out of him by somebody desperate to defend herself.”  She gestured to Tony’s scraped and bruised arms.
“I’m Iron Man,” said Tony.  “I was fighting a robot.”  The words sounded hollow even to him.  They didn’t believe him.  Nobody would.
“Between the last time you were seen in New York and when you were sighted in Los Angeles there’s plenty of time for you to have made the flight in one of your suits,” Nancy told him.  “And the time since is more than enough to dispose of a body. Where is Ms. Potts?”
“Why would I have hurt her?” Tony asked desperately.
Nancy’s voice was cold.  “Only you know that.”
Tony lowered his head.  “No more questions,” he said.  “I’m done.”
With his lawyers there to enforce his wishes, the interrogation was over, but the police could – and did – book him.  He was photographed and fingerprinted and swabbed like a criminal, then put in an orange jumpsuit to be taken back to a cell.
“When’s the bail hearing?” he asked.
“The judge has decided there won’t be one,” Sid replied, holding the cell door for him.  “They couldn’t set it high enough that you wouldn’t be a flight risk.”
Of course they couldn’t.  “I want to make a phone call,” Tony said.  Since calling Pepper clearly wasn’t going to do any good, he would call Rhodey.
The police stood around and watched as Tony sat using the phone at a detective’s desk, listening to it ring.  He didn’t doubt that everything he said was going to be recorded.  It didn’t matter, because he would tell the truth.  Telling the truth at least meant you never needed to remember what you’d lied about.
“Hello?” asked Rhodey’s voice.
Tony had been holding his breath, terrified that Rhodey, too, would be mysteriously unreachable.  Now it roared in the mouthpiece as he let it out.  “Rhodey, it’s me,” he said.
“Tony?”  The surprise in his voice was audible.  “Where have you been?”
“Fighting robots in an alternate reality.  It’s a long story,” said Tony.  “Are you okay?  Is Bruce okay?  We were all on a government hit list.”
“I know,” Rhodey said.  “We’re all fine, don’t worry – except Pepper.  Nobody’s seen her in days.  I’ve been trying to tell people that if you took her away, it was to protect her.  I know you wouldn’t have it in you to hurt her.  Where is she?”
“I don’t know,” Tony admitted miserably.  How many times was he going to be forced to say that? Tony always preferred to give the impression that he knew everything, so having to say he didn’t know something, repeatedly, stung.  Having to say he didn’t know where Pepper was… that was ten, twenty, a hundred times worse.  “At least, I sort of know, but like I said, there’s alternate realities involved  I know how to go find her, but I have to get out of here.  These people think I killed her.”
“I know,” Rhodey repeated gravely.  “Like I said, I’ve been trying to tell them that’s not you, but you have to admit the evidence doesn’t look good.  The DA thinks nailing Iron Man for murder will be her ticket into congress.”
“Great,” said Tony.  On top of everything else, politics.  “I need help, Rhodey.  I can get to her and I can get her back, but I can’t do it alone.”
“They’re not gonna let you out of there,” Rhodey warned him. “There’s not gonna be a bail hearing for a guy who could pay the GDP of some small countries, and I can’t help you while you’re in jail for murder.”
Tony nodded.  He understood what his friend was saying, and exactly how he ought to reply. “Do me a favour.  Call the Met and tell them I won’t be at the Gala this year.”
“I’ll do that,” Rhodey replied.
With the call finished, Tony went quietly back to his cell, running his fingers along his forearms as he did.  The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan had an exhibit on arms and armor, and a few years ago Tony had donated an old suit to it.  The museum staff had no idea it was still functional – either he or Rhodey could send it a signal from a cell phone that would activate it in the event that either of them needed a suit and didn’t have access to any others.  It would seek out the transponders in Tony’s body.  All he had to do was wait.
Twenty minutes later, the female cop with the unpronounceable name stopped by to give Tony his dinner.  This appeared to be spaghetti and meatballs, although appearances could be deceiving.  “Thanks,” he said as she handed it to him.  “Say, what’s the odds that this contains any actual food?”
“It’s not drugged, if that’s what you mean,” she said. “What do you think we’re trying to do?”
“If I’m being honest, I think you’re trying to railroad me,” Tony replied.  “You must feel pretty jazzed, arresting Iron Man and all.”
Nancy met his gaze evenly.  “You’ve always been able to get away with anything, haven’t you? Well, you know what?  The richest man in the world can’t get away with murder.”
“I’m not the richest man in the world,” Tony corrected her, “but if I see him, I’ll tell him so.”
Her eyes narrowed.  “I’ve seen you on TV.  You’ve always thought you were a really funny guy, haven’t you, Stark?”
“It’s my chief coping mechanism,” Tony told her – and then he felt a sharp pinch in his right arm.  That was the transponder.  The sizzle of a mild electric shock was its way of alerting him that the suit he’d summoned was approaching.  He’d figured he’d better build in some kind of alert system after nearly embarrassing himself in front of the AIM mooks last Christmas.  “You might wanna duck,” he warned Nancy, then dropped his spaghetti and rolled under the bed.
Half a second later, the Met suit blasted the wall down.
Tony could hear Nancy yelling for backup, but he didn’t even look at her as he wiggled out from under the cot and crawled over the rubble. He couldn’t afford to.  He had to get into that suit.  It opened for him, and when he stepped inside the pieces clicked into place around him with an easy familiarity.
“Hello, JARVIS,” said Tony, as the familiar HUD popped up.  “Did you miss me?”
Very much, Sir, the familiar voice replied.
“Can’t wait to hear about it,” said Tony, “but for now we can…”
“Freeze!” a voice shouted.
Tony looked up to see six cops pointing guns at him. He frowned.  “Really?” he asked.  “I mean… really?  You’re threatening Iron Man with a Glock 22?”  He wasn’t even offended by it, just mystified.  It was public knowledge that the suits could take an anti-tank round – footage of it had made the news years ago.  What did these people think they were going to accomplish?
The cops plainly hadn’t considered that.  They exchanged some nervous glances, each hoping one of the others had a better idea.  Apparently nobody did.
Tony was kind of curious what they might come up with if he stuck around, but there was no time for that.  So he waved and said, “bye, now!” and took off.
In the gathering dusk, the lights of Leesburg dropped away below him, and Tony took a moment to watch as the terrain and air traffic control information appeared in the display, getting his bearings.  Once he had that, he began circling, settling into a holding pattern while he figured out where to go next.  “Okay, JARVIS,” he said.  “What did I miss?”
I believe it will reassure you to know that Captain Rogers and Agents Romanov and Hill, along with a new ally, First Lieutenant Samuel Wilson, are being hailed as heroes in the media for their role in exposing the conspiracy within SHIELD. Unfortunately, they are also all out of work now.
“Tell them there’s always a place for them at Stark Industries,” said Tony.  Rogers wouldn’t accept, but the others might.  “Before we go on, though – the cops must have some kind of record of where they picked me up, and since I’m a celebrity it was probably on the news.  I need you to find that spot, because we gotta track down the truck I came back in.  It’s probably got what I need in it.”  If SHIELD – or HYDRA – were taking the wormhole platform away, they were probably also hiding any leftover tesseract juice they had in storage.  Hopefully, they would put related things in the same place.
Searching now, Sir, said JARVIS.  A map came up in the HUD, and several points illuminated.  Photographs from Google Earth appeared next to each as JARVIS attempted to match the location to images from news websites.
“There!”  Tony stared at one particular image, which JARVIS obligingly enlarged for him.  “The overpass with the white building visible over the hill – where is that?”
That is where the Loudoun County Parkway crosses State Route Seven, said JARVIS.
The area nearby matched – there were the trees and fence he remembered, and he knew he’d seen that building that was peeking out over the crest of the overpass.  “That’s it,” said Tony.  “That’s where we stopped.”  He thought for a moment.  “If I remember correctly, Route Seven goes directly from Washington to Leesburg. Where’s it go after that?”
State Route Seven ends in Winchester, Virginia, said JARVIS.
“Is there anything there they might be stopping for?”
JARVIS brought up a couple more photographs – brick buildings, a copper-roofed gazebo, and a man with a bald head and big horn-rimmed glasses.  The dean of the Shenandoah University School of Arts and Sciences is Dr. Kassander Xanthopoulos, an expert on higher-dimensional physics.  SHIELD consulted him several times in relation to the tesseract, before bringing Dr. Erik Selvig in on the project instead.
“Awesome,” said Tony.  “That’s where we’re going, then.  Now, on the way you can tell me what happened while I was gone.  We had a power surge somewhere over Kansas – then what happened?”

Have one day to spend in Tokyo and want to see the ultra modern skyscrapers and shopping areas of Japan’s busy capital? This 1-day itinerary offers an efficient step-by-step touring plan for visiting Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, and Roppongi. Along the way, we’ll cover architecture, museums, parks, and even a couple of historic sites.
For most visitors to Japan, this is the familiar side of Tokyo. It’s what you’ve seen depicted in movies like Lost in Translation, and is definitely the more popular side of the city for tourists. It’s certain alive with activity, and simply wandering around soaking up the bright neon lights, standing under the towering buildings, and shopping at the array of stores–from luxury boutiques to approachable shops–is a great way to spend a day in Tokyo.
With that said, we do not recommend only a single day in Tokyo. If you can, add another day in the ‘old Tokyo’ districts of Asakusa and other eastern areas (see our 1-Day Eastern Tokyo, Japan Itinerary). To that end, our 2-Day Tokyo, Japan Highlights Itinerary is a good culmination of these two plans for seeing more of this incredible city…
While this is presented as a set itinerary with steps to follow, you can have a great day in Western Tokyo simply by getting off at Shibuya Station, slowly meandering north, discovering random spots, and stopping to do whatever strikes your fancy. You’ll eventually end up in Shinjuku, which is one of the more ‘colorful’ nightlife districts in Japan.
Basically, this whole post takes that loose plan and organizes it into something easier to digest, and with some specific recommendations for things to see, do, and eat as you meander your way from Shibuya to Shinjuku…
Shibuya – Even if you don’t like to shop at high-end retailers (I don’t), you should have a good time strolling the zelkova tree-lined boulevard of Omotesando, which is essentially Tokyo’s version of the Champs Élysées. Omotesando is clean, pretty, and dotted with eye-catching modern architecture (here’s a walking tour with more photos of the buildings–my favorite is Prada). Along the side-streets, you’ll find smaller upstart boutiques and excellent restaurants, so don’t be shy to stray from the path.
We recommend beginning your walking tour of Shibuya at Omotesando Station or Roppongi Station (for a longer walk). The latter gives you a chance to pass through the posh Roppongi Hills area and see more before continuing up Omotesando, through the world-famous Shibuya Crossing, and then arriving in Harajuku.
Harajuku – Harajuku has a reputation that precedes it, famous for its street wear, vivid outfits, and non-conformist culture. Or at least, it did. Harajuku’s scene is a shadow of its former self, but the good news is that you’ll still see the eclectic and elaborate outfits that define public perceptions of Harajuku.
Stroll up towards Takeshita Dori, which is considered the heart of Harajuku. Along the way, for a truly on-brand and bizarre Harajuku experience, make a stop at Kawaii Monster Cafe for desserts. For something quicker, Harajuku’s grab and go crepes are not to be missed. Our favorites include Angel’s Heart, Marion Crepes, or Santa Monica Crepes.
Urban Park & Shrine – After a few hours in the Tokyo’s most modern and chaotic areas, a walk through Yoyogi Park should be a welcome reprieve. The highlight of this massive green space is Meiji Jingu Shrine, and while temples and shrines are best saved for Kyoto, you’re already here so you might as well see it.
In addition to exploring Meiji Jingu Shrine, the area makes a good place to rest and reflect. Do some people watching (weekend weddings are common at the shrine), and get off your feet for a few minutes before moving on. Meiji Shrine is set in a lovely wooded setting that gives it a lot of appeal, plus it’s free. From this shrine, continue towards Yoyogi Park’s northern entrance. This will lead you towards Shinjuku Gyoen’s Sendagaya Gate.
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden – Tokyo’s most popular green space and garden, Shinjuku Gyoen is an excellent spot for cherry blossoms during spring sakura season or autumn foliage in fall. Any time of year, this dynamic space has impressive gardens inspired by different international horticultural styles, including French and English landscape gardens.
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is also a great spot to grab some matcha and a snack, or just enjoy the scenery from the lawn. If you don’t want to buy food at one of Shinjuku Gyoen’s teahouses, we’d recommend stopping at Lawson or 7-11 before visiting, and having a makeshift picnic in the park.
Single-Subject Museums – We view Shinjuku as the heart of Tokyo, and there’s no shortage of things to do here. The options are fairly open-ended and diverse, with a variety of different stores, restaurants, and things to do. The bulk of our time is usually just wandering around, but we are also big fans of the many corporate or niche interest museums.
For the first-timer to Japan, we’d recommend choosing a couple of these museums. Around here, you can find pretty much any topic you can imagine: coffee, toy, paper, costumes, music sumo, beer, swords, transportation, cameras, and so on…museums. Our favorites within walking distance of Shinjuku are the Fire Museum and Samurai Museum. If you want to find the right museum for you, simply Google “Tokyo Museum + [insert your interest].”
Robot Restaurant – It’s true…all of it. If you’ve done any research about Tokyo, you’ve probably heard of Robot Restaurant. Even if you haven’t heard of it, you’ve no doubt seen it featured in montage commercials for TripAdvisor and travel segments about Tokyo. Its popularity has exploded in recent years, in large part because literally everything you’ve heard about this bizarre show is true.
Even if you go in expecting something totally crazy, Robot Restaurant will defy your expectations. We’ve visited countless times in the years since it opened (before its popularity exploded), and it has definitely gone more mainstream and touristy. Nonetheless, we love and highly recommend it–there’s a reason we keep going back! We have multiple posts about Robot Restaurant, including our original (and regularly-updated) Robot Restaurant Review, so we’re not going to rehash all of the praises we’ve sang for it here.
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building – When you’re done with Robot Restaurant, it might be time for either dinner (unfortunately, Robot Restaurant is not an actual restaurant) or you might still be able to catch sunset transition to dusk at the Tokyo Metro Government Building’s observation deck.
This observation area is free, rarely has much (if any) line, and the location in Shinjuku offers some really interesting views amidst Tokyo’s city-center. It’s a very different perspective than the Tokyo SkyTree, and arguably the superior experience for all of the aforementioned reasons. (We’d recommend doing both if you have the time, or just the Metro Gov’t Building if you’re choosing one.) After doing some ‘observing’, it’s time for dinner…
Dinner & Roppongi – Comprehensive dining recommendations are beyond the scope of this itinerary, but we do have a list of the Our Favorite Ramen Restaurants in Tokyo. On that list, you’ll find Fuunji Ramen, which is a stone’s throw from the Tokyo Metro Gov’t Building.
Following that, you can either succumb to your ramen coma and call it a night, or finish your ‘loop’ of western Tokyo by returning to Roppongi via the train. Roppongi has a vast selection of dining and shopping amidst some of the world’s largest malls, and some more intimate locales that make for good nightlife. It’s also Tokyo’s expat epicenter, so if you want some comforting American cuisine, you have a ton of options, including common chains and even stuff like Shake Shack!

Week 9: Halloween and Edinburgh
Halloween was the beginning of this week, on Monday night, the night before we left for Edinburgh, Scotland. I celebrated like I usually do, by carving a pumpkin and watching the ever-essential Rocky Horror Picture Show, which I foisted upon my housemates Allison and Bridgette. In class Monday we discussed Scotland’s reach for independence in the Scottish Independence Referendum (2014), in preparation for the days to come.
Pumpkin carving was also my way of preparing to leave London again, a normal activity before being uprooted for the time being (we would be in Scotland from Tuesday to Saturday, effectively the rest of the week). Celebrating an American holiday confused my host mom a little bit, because she didn’t know what kind of traditions we were used to for Halloween. The same goes for me, in terms of understanding how kids in England see Halloween. We had a few trick-or-treaters knock on our door, proving that it does exist somewhat over here; it is not, however, as widely celebrated in comparison to how it’s celebrated in the U.S. My host mom was familiar with the practice of handing out candy, so the kids who did show up were rewarded. It felt weird to be leaving so soon, with midterm break still feeling like it just happened, and feeling like I just re-settled into London and a school schedule.

Edinburgh, Scotland
Tuesday:
I was running on very little sleep when we gathered near a Pret a Manger in King’s Cross, waiting until around 8:30 a.m. to board the train to Edinburgh. It was a four hour journey from London, and I slept for about an hour right up until we arrived. The scene outside the window had turned from a drab grey to the bright blues and greens that characterize Scotland, a creeping excitement filling my chest. This trip would definitely be one of the highlights of my semester, and I could tell that as we approached Waverley station.
Getting off the train was jarring. It was a much different “vibe” from London; even as London’s crowds aren’t overwhelming, Edinburgh’s crowds huddle and weave in the cold, nimbly-hatted heads bobbing in the distance. And it was notably colder than London, if London could even qualify as cold. That was another misconception about London: it may be grey, but it doesn’t feel anything like the cold I’ve felt in the U.S. London is humid, and I have managed to sweat every day since being here. I count the passing of seasons partially by how the weather changes. It hasn’t felt truly like autumn in London due to the humidity, so living here has been a sort of limbo, existing outside of the rules of the midwestern American weather I’m accustomed to. Is it spring? Is it still summer? Because it doesn’t feel like autumn.
This was a great thing about Scotland -- it was cold! And I think I thrive in cold weather. I am no good melting onto the slabs of hot concrete in a city. Let me have the comfort of a bundled up neck, a winter coat that hugs me just right. Let me have the cold, I asked, and Scotland answered. It is simple to feel this fulfilled, but I digress.
We walked to our hostel, in the modernized section of Edinburgh. After dropping our bags off, we headed back out, guided by Mary, the assistant director of the London GEO centre. Our destination now was Edinburgh Castle, located on a large hill. I was prepared in my understanding of why Scotland lost their independence referendum, but I was not prepared for the steps up to the castle. If I was enjoying the cold, it was then necessary to wick away the sweat I accumulated on the trip up the stairs. The stairs are in a park near the train station, accentuating how Edinburgh occupies two different levels -- modern Edinburgh below, and old town Edinburgh above.
Once we made it to the castle, I stripped my winter coat off to greet the wind that whipped around us at the higher altitude. I took a guided tour, getting accompanied with the castle’s illustrious history as a fortress and now home of multiple museums and Scottish regalia. After staying at the castle for an hour and a half, we rounded up to go to the Scottish National Gallery back down the stairs.
I was tuckered out after rushing around the gallery, so I called it a night along with my hostel roommates. After dinner, we went straight to bed to gear up for another long day.
Wednesday:
We had a proper Scottish breakfast at the hostel before walking to old town, involving bacon, sausage, black pudding, runny eggs, baked beans, and toast. The walk to old town is quite the trek, because it’s all uphill (my calves got their fair share of exercise...). First on the agenda was the National Museum of Scotland, showcasing a wide array of history/artifacts, as well as some of Scotland’s premiere scientific discoveries, which includes Dolly the sheep, the first cloned mammal.
The café where J.K. Rowling wrote the beginnings of what would become Harry Potter was kitty corner from the museum, so I went there for lunch. Tea time has become a favored ritual of mine (following in the footsteps of the British), and was made more special in a cute café with an acquired, famous past and real Scottish shortbread.
We walked the Royal Mile to St. Giles’ Cathedral and then to the Writers’ Museum as recommended by my writing professor Susie. The big event for the afternoon, however, was Arthur’s Seat.
As with most things this semester, I had no idea what to expect. I can say with certainty this time that I was NOT prepared for the climb that was required of me to make it to the top of Arthur’s seat. And to be honest, I had never hiked before, not that I’m even sure that what I did was hiking. More like taking to the inconsistent stairs feebly, stopping every five minutes to catch my breath, or try to breathe at all. Like I said, I have been doing a lot of walking this semester, but this climb takes the cake as the hardest walk (er, I guess, climb) I have ever done. Arthur’s Seat is an inactive volcano, now the popular hiking grounds for tourists and locals alike. I think it took me almost an hour to climb to the top, but what awaited me was worth the initial pain.
This was one of the most breathtaking things I had done so far, and I know I say I have a lot of favorite moments from my semester but this was something else. I finally understand what people mean when they say they felt “on top of the world.” I wasn’t quite “on top” of the world, because Arthur’s seat is only about 900 feet above ground, but the sentiment still stands. I was high on an adrenaline rush, too, which added to the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment and awe. I spent almost an hour at the peak, trying and failing to capture photos that did the moment justice. The walk back down was just as magical, with dusk falling on Edinburgh’s skyline, seen perfectly from the descent.
Thursday:
Thursday was technically the last day in Edinburgh with the entire program, and we were free to stay more nights into the weekend. I had planned to stay until Saturday, and I’m so glad I did. If my trip had ended with the rest of the program, it would have felt like a premature ending, a trip cut too short. Those of us who were staying left our bags in the hostel, the rest of the people having to drag their bags around until they left in the afternoon. We had to go to the Quaker Meeting House in old town to talk to esteemed journalist Ian Macwhirter, who was to lecture us on Scottish independence, a topic he is well-acquainted with.
After lunch we had a tour of the Scottish Parliament, which was unexpectedly one of my favorite parts of the trip. This was due to the extreme eco-friendliness, people-friendliness, and sustainability of the building that houses parliament -- and here are some amazing facets about the building:
The parliament building has beehives (save the bees!!!!)
It has gardens and apple trees they collect from to make food
There is no air conditioning in the main part of the building, just skylights that filter in sunlight and air along with solar panels
There is air conditioning where people work long hours of manual labor, i.e., the kitchen
Apparatuses attached to the roof collect rainwater which is then sanitized and used for labor and washing
The entire building is designed in the shape of a tree
Government workers have their own window seats where they can sit, rest, and think
This was bookended by a visit with the Scottish Minister of Education, Shirley-Anne Somerville. She briefly explained the kinds of goals she has for her position, including continuing Scotland’s exceptional University programs.
With that, the day was mostly over, and Laura and me had planned to stay at an Airbnb the rest of the weekend. We went back to the hostel to grab our bags and took a bus to the far end of Edinburgh where the apartment was. Dinner was purchased at a Sainsbury’s, a rather uneventful end to a great day.
Friday:
This is the kind of thing I missed, I thought. I had left the Airbnb later than I had planned, weaving through what was called ‘The Meadows,’ a hauntingly flat stretch of land in otherwise hilly Edinburgh, with a giant bottle of Lucozade and the ability to blend in to what I would soon approach. I had left the apartment in a rush, worried that I would miss out on who knows what – was it the landscape? I had already had my fill in the days before, climbing incessantly up and down the streets, but there was more, always more to see. This just meant I hit the crowd at the perfect time, the way a minnow works its way into a stream at a seemingly fateful moment, when all collides in a song of normalcy, crowds passing into classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories.
I felt a bit like a fish out of water at first, close enough to the edge of the dock to peer airlessly back into the wet abyss – until I felt like a fish in water, nonetheless with a constant stream of other fish passing by in indifference. Stepping onto this campus, or what looked like a campus, felt like this. A particular heartstring was plucked, one note rang out within me that surged with home, home like an objective correlative. The practicality of the daywear, the sensible water bottles hung from hands, the earbuds plugged into devices no doubt playing the music I liked. Shoes and backpacks in various colors and shapes moved throughout the space, rending one complete and unblemished image of collegiate grace.
I thought of my own campus – how different it was in size and feel, Alma’s squat 70s brick being interchanged for buildings that had both the modern and ancient touches of Edinburgh. Alma reeked of the 70s, no matter how hard the administration tried to patch over the decaying brown carpets or add fancy flat screen TVs to every lobby in a bid to distract from it. It was endearing and nostalgic of a mid-20th century that I had not lived through. All the previously graduated students haunted like ghosts, sitting in armchairs by the fireplace in the Van Dusen building, noticeably replaced fixtures forever harking back to a past history. My campus could never compare to this one, idiosyncratic in its own right. But it was the campuses I would never be a student at which enticed me for that reason.
In sudden flashes I longed for familiar professors, office doors permanently cracked open, kids I didn’t know but probably saw five times a day walking the same paths, assignments done hurriedly while talking to close friends, dorm rooms bedecked with string lights and personal window decorations. This is the hum of the campus: a nucleus of he said she said, translated to a font and scribe that is easily discerned and carefully located.
There were the noticeable tawny heads tipped back in laughter, gaggles of friends walking side by side in comradery, places of interest including a café table covered in research, two girls conferencing over the drama of the past day, and good haircuts blown in the wind on their way to the back seat of a class they loathed. I was waiting for someone to look at me and smile in recognition, then remembering I was in a different, surprisingly foreign, country. I blended in well enough, happy to pretend I was a student here, sure they would welcome me with open arms on the off chance that I did move to Edinburgh and decide to enroll in their post-graduate program. It was a lovely thought. I pictured myself studying in a library I hadn’t yet seen, dauntingly filled with all the books I’d never get to finish and research I’d never do.
Then it was on to another street; in Alma, you know where the streets end and the college begins. There is a meridian valor, a notoriety to the sidewalks that pave the very edge of campus. Further out is unknown territory, but here you are safe inside. An impervious little bubble of floating ideas, cramped connections, gathering in their own strange light, a forced light not unlike that of the University ad campaigns – jovial students on their way to class, and thus, a career, endless sidewalk and greenery created just for lounging in the quad on a spring day, lovers’ quarrels, or somber walks home after noisy fraternity parties. On this campus, though, I thought I was sure where it ended, a brief pause in the flow of traffic for businesspeople and the like to flow as well. The romance ended just as the street did. I passed into another zone, not connected fully to the campus, a phantom limb of fast buses and impatient elders. I walked on, letting the fantasy carry me to my next location. This campus could have been anywhere – though it was here. I let the feeling take its course, but it elapsed and my emotions slipped away.
That next location was the National Library of Scotland, where I would meet my housemate Bridgette, a fellow English major who, I assumed, was also into that kind of stuff. Unfortunately, you had to be a member of the library to really get inside, but we had a nice time perusing the gift shop before heading to the Scottish Poetry Library.
The poetry library is one of my favorite places in Edinburgh; one visit was not enough, could never be enough. There is an abundant collection of poetry books, cozy chairs, and an upstairs lounge worth a few good hours that I didn’t have. Nonetheless, I made the best out of the hour that I did have, taking time to appropriately read some poetry. Bridgette and me ate our lunch on a bench on the Royal Mile, until pigeons attacked us viciously and we were forced to leave.
We went to meet up with Julia and Laura by the Scot Monument, heading to the bay at the other side of Edinburgh via bus. We had wanted to get a peek at the Royal Yacht, and upon arrival, we did, except it was behind a fence. At this point in the trip, by the bay, I had encompassed a nearly full view of Edinburgh -- its peaks, its valleys, its water, its city, its ancient town. And I felt invariably satisfied, as we rode the bus back to the Airbnb, city lights floating by in a haze.
Saturday:
Saturday morning’s activities included walking around Holyrood Park (right next to Arthur’s seat), backpacks on and bags in hand because we had to leave the Airbnb bright and early, then working our way to the Royal Mile for shopping. We gathered all of the gifts we had to stuff in our backpacks, climbing Calton Hill, a hill filled with various Scottish monuments, most of which were closed as we soon realized. It was just Laura and me with all of our baggage, and we made it through the cold and the physical strain, fueled by Starbucks’ holiday-themed drinks and a tourist’s sense of duty. Our exit was nicely soundtracked by bagpipes, and we went to the Waverley train station to catch our train after the hill.
I was sad to leave Edinburgh. It had encapsulated a lot for me -- my own Scottish heritage, my college’s mascot (we are the Scots), the sound of bagpipes transporting me back to campus, the sheer beauty of Edinburgh, its energy different from London -- and I left with a full, grateful heart. I was especially grateful for the itinerary GEO had planned for us, and the opportunities that came with it. I am not sure I would have had such an exceptional trip to Scotland had it not been for the help and guidance of Mary and GEO for planning it. This undoubtedly bolstered my personal experience of Scotland, and my understanding of it (and its aims for independence) too. I can definitely say cheers to that.

Hyperallergic: New Art from China Renders Local Histories Fantastic, Futuristic, and Bloody
Sun Yuan and Peng Yu’s “Can’t Help Myself” (2016) (all photos courtesy of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum)
In the corner of a small gallery on an upper floor of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, you are immersed in a bloody, bizarre, and strangely emotional tableau. Inside a floor-to-ceiling acrylic cage, a black robotic arm twirls around, sweeping bloody residue on the floor towards itself. Just as the arm’s plastic flap cleans one area, more liquid oozes out elsewhere. The artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu have given the poor robot an impossible job — the piece, called “Can’t Help Myself,” dooms the arm to this repetitive, hopeless, horrific task. The arm uses sensors to choose where it will sweep next, but at times it whirls and flails as if overwhelmed, giving the arm an eerily humanoid feel.
The installation is a highlight of Tales of Our Time, a dynamic and tightly curated exhibition at the Guggenheim. This robotic arm could be an icon for the present moment. It makes tangible, for our globalized and industrialized world, the metaphor of “clean hands.” Do we identify with the robot and its attempt to make order out of the violent mess around it? (Isn’t this how it feels to respond to each new appointment by the president-elect, each white power rally?) Or is the robot simply there to do what most refuse to, performing the messy labor of waste management that allows our societies to function?
It’s a shock for anyone coming to the Guggenheim expecting to kick back with Kandinsky and Cézanne. Tales of Our Time is a small but ambitious show, presenting just seven artists or collectives, with nine works in total. Each of these thoughtful, well-realized works offers an investigation into global politics, the contemporary as historical, and environmental collapse, with room to laugh, rest, and think in between.
The nine works are commissions, generated after a series of studio visits with emerging and mid-career Chinese artists by curators Xiaoyu Weng and Hou Hanru. The commissions were paid for by a major grant from the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, and the museum will acquire all of them. The exhibition, then, is like a laboratory: these works are brand new, and are being stamped into the DNA of the Guggenheim.
Chia-En Jao, “Taxi” (2016)
The artist Chia-En Jao, who lives and works in Taipei, created his deceptively simple Taxi films with cab drivers as he visited sites of colonial history around Taiwan. Any New Yorker who has chatted with a cab driver knows that exploring our contested neighborhoods and histories starts on the ride there. In one interview, a driver excitedly describes his firearms, explosives, and parachuting training in the military. When Jao asks what all of it was for, the cab driver talks about the plot to invade the mainland in the late 1960s. We glimpse, in his telling, an alternate history unfold, one in which Taiwan defeats the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and this muscular and garrulous man might be a war hero. Other drivers complain about mainlanders or share their disgust for Taiwanese politics — it’s vox populi, history lesson, and talk show in one.
The politics of the East China Sea appear again in Tsang Kin-Wah’s “In The End Is The Word,” which illustrates a fictional war. In a mural-sized animation, battleships fight over the Diaoyu (or, according to Japan, Senkaku) Islands. In real life, the islands have been disputed fiercely between the PRC, Taiwan, and Japan since oil reserves were discovered there in the late 1960s. In Tsang’s video, just at the battle’s peak, a stream of words appears on the horizon and floods onto the floor of the gallery via powerful overhead projectors. It’s a stunning visual effect, and the sentence fragments — e.g. “the infinite slippage” and “being there at the right” — speak to the posturing and emptiness of diplomatic rhetoric.
Tsang Kin-Wah, “In the End is the Word” (2016)
Sun Xun places the landscape of his hometown of Fuxin into a fantastical mural and animated video where multiple histories, real and imagined, collide. Like William Kentridge’s animated meditations on the landscape and industry of South Africa, Sun’s “Mythological Time” uses heavy brushstrokes and visual rhymes to metamorphose the landscape and its inhabitants. Set to grand, operatic music, we watch crows fly out of men’s chests and tanks roll across mountains; a giraffe becomes a tomb which becomes a communist sculpture; a landscape erodes in the rain. In Sun’s mythical take, industrialization seems to turn us not forward into a glittering future, but backward into tombs, animals, and the elements.
Zhou Tao’s film “Land of the Throat” also shows violently remade landscapes, but in a poetic, futuristic tone. You sit in the bowl of a curved floor, with the two-channel film projected on either side. The room setup reflects the Pearl River Delta seen in Zhou’s camera — abandoned industrial waste, manmade craters. He films them at night or dusk, capturing sleeping workers and animals scurrying around the sites. Shown in these quiet hours, the land is desolate, moonlike. You feel like an alien visitor watching a wasted earth.
Still from Zhou Tao, “The Land of the Throat” (2016)
While Zhou’s film looks at the excesses of contemporary society, Kan Xuan unearths civilizations past. She took a five-month journey across the plateaus of Central Asia searching for remnants of ancient settlements. Her snapshots of those sites are compiled into stop-motion videos, which are hung in the gallery like still photographs. In these 13 videos, the landscapes seem to breathe and pulse, as if being resuscitated.
Nearby, the Yangjiang Group has set up a social space, a riff on the Chinese garden. They serve tea daily, inviting conversation around a series of low tables, with views of the Guggenheim’s outdoor greenery. There is also a station to test your blood pressure before and after visiting, making you question whether the tranquility of the space actually serves a utilitarian, biometric purpose. Who is collecting the data? Are we paying for the tea with our personal information, our vital signs?
As with many of the works in the exhibition, the garden points to an uneasy tension between personal choices and larger power dynamics. A taxi ride is an invitation to ponder history, a group of islands suggests war. If our globalized, industrialized, war-prone world seems incomprehensible, these artists remind us there are at least clues to understanding the places we visit.
Tales of Our Time continues at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1071 5th Ave, Upper East Side, Manhattan) through March 10.
