and heres just the lineart because i love nice crisp weighted lines.

rene had such a great way with body language which he leaned on during his performance as odo- i assume because his face was covered by a creepy skin-mask the whole time, limiting his facial expressions. very fun to see how he portrays this really gruff grumpy dude in his posture. he’s always skulking around with his head low and his nose high.

so i’ve finally got a good grasp on how to draw odo with stylistic flair. drawing goo is both meditatively fun and horribly tedious, 7/10.

i like his eyes. look at em. what a freak.

I’m not normally one to disregard canon, but my biggest disappointment with Deep Space Nine - and largely my only complaint with the show - is its handling of the changelings. Not the Dominion, mind you, just the decisions regarding the physiology of the changelings.

In the first place, we’re told Odo looks like that because he’s bad at faces and that’s the closest approximation he can get. The the changelings show up and they look like that. They mention not having a default solid state, they should have morphed to have the face of whoever they were talking to when they need to interact with the solids but don’t have a specific form they need to have.

In the second place, the changelings have sexual dimorphism. Seriously, what the hell. They have “no default solid state,” and yet there are female and male changelings? They don’t even reproduce through sex (depending on how far you’re willing to abstract the concept of sex), and when they shapeshift they can take the form of a person of any gender. So why are some changelings male and some female? It’s stupid.

What they shoulda done - and this is why they should have hired me, a person who was not yet born when they were writing the show - is they should have had Odo be a man as a result of him growing up in an environment where gender is a concept; where he is the only thing that is neither male nor female, but where he wants to fit in and adopts the label of “man” because it is the best fit. It would have been super interesting for the changelings to be like “you say you are a man? The solids have corrupted you with their limited concepts” and for him to be like “we changelings can choose what we want to be, and I want to be a man.”
