Yes, Captain

Happy Halloween! I was able to finish a short story I started ages ago, just in time to post it as a Halloween special. This is not related to Professional//Victim, but instead centers on the plight of an Irish pirate crew.

Tadhg is an irish name pronounced like TIE-G. Pronunciation reference available here: x

This one is hopefully sufficiently creepy, gross, and gory. Mind the tags. Alternative title: Blood and Oranges

“Captain!”

Tadhg’s head whipped around as if his own name was called, and gave a cursory glance to the deck before making his way over to the private. Captain was nowhere in sight, likely getting stoned in his quarters, so Tadhg took the reins as his practiced right-hand man.

The private who had called was in the crow’s nest, so Tadhg climbed the netting up, the ropes still rough under his calloused hands. He pulled himself up with decent ease but actively suppressed his need for more breath, trying to appear effortless in front of his underling.

“Aye?”

Snake Eyes handed him the telescope without comment. Tadhg raised it to his eye and squinted, blinking a few times against it before he saw the ship. Not immediately close, but drawing closer at an unnatural pace. Less subtly, the ship made its identity known with its trademark crimson sails.

Tadhg swallowed uncomfortably and lowered the spyglass.

“It could be an imposter,” Snake Eyes tried, with a nervous air.

“We cann’y afford to be wrong.”

Tadhg’s stomach was clenched in a pit of worry, but he carefully kept a calm face.

“Get the crew ready for battle, I’ll meet with the captain.”

Snake Eyes nodded, worried, and scurried down the nets after Tadhg.

At the bottom, Tadhg straightened his vest and clapped his hands.

“ATTENTION! A ship resemblin’ The Red Dawn has been spotted, 20 kilometers north, headed our way. Ready in case of a fight, be on standby for orders, Snake Eyes will direct.”

The crew paused for the announcement, and made nervous, uncertain eyes at one another while they slowly shifted gears. There was an air of disbelief stalling their movements, but Snake Eyes could snap them into shape.

Tadhg hurried down the narrow steps to the captain’s quarters, and he could hear word spreading down through the layers of the ship to the gun deck.

“Captain!”

He knocks on the door vigorously, hoping to wake him from his inevitable stupor.

“Who iiiiiisssss ittttt?” Rowan called back, muffled through the door. Tadhg pulled a pin from his hat and picked the lock with practiced ease, letting himself in. Wild Red Rowan was lying in his bed, the only bed on board, smoking opium with a humorous scowl.

“I thought I told you not to do that.”

“Captain, we’ve spotted The Red Dawn headed our way.”

Rowan’s face drained and his cheer was gone in a flash. He set down his pipe, looked at it, and then started packing it full again.

“Hoist the white flag.”

Tadhg didn’t move.

“What?”

“Surrender. Immediately. It’s our only chance.” Rowan didn’t meet his gaze, instead focusing on smoking as much of the opium as he could in short order.

“We - we might. Still outrun them.” Tadhg’s words sounded hollow, even to him.

“We won’t.”

“We have to fight.”

“We can’t win.”

“We don’t know that.”

“We can’t afford to lose. We have to give up, it’s the only way any of us will be spared.”

Tadhg walked back up the stairs in a daze. He reached the gun deck first, where the crew was scrambling to ready artillery.

“Don’t - don’t. We’re surrendering.”

He didn’t say it loud enough first, when only a few people slowed and looked at him.

“HALT! PREPARE FOR A SURRENDER! CAPTAIN’S ORDERS!” he barked. Stunned faces of disbelief looked back at him. Some folks didn’t even stop preparations. A woman with long black hair dropped an armful of knives unceremoniously onto the floor.

“Are you having a fucking craic?”

Tadhg stifled a nervous laugh.

“‘Fraid no’.”

Blackjack stared at him for a long moment, finally deciding he wasn’t joking.

“Fuck. Fuck!”

She kicked the heap on the floor she had dropped, scattering knives and cutlasses of various sizes around the deck.

Tadhg walked numbly back to the main deck, where he repeated his order to a similarly mixed success. His boots weighed a thousand pounds with each step he took to the mast, kicking the trunk at its base open and pulling the heavy cream canvas from its depths. In case of emergencies.

The crew of The Great Deceptor had never raised the white flag before.

Tadhg had been sure he’d be dead before he’d see it happen. He stared at the fabric in his hands for a moment as if it might speak to him. He hoped he might have some moment of clarity, of feeling assured of what to do. None came.

Looking past it, down to the ocean, The Red Dawn was growing closer at an overwhelming rate. It was a calm day, yet the foreign vessel cut the waves like a watersnake. Without the breeze, The Great Deceptor’s white flag hung limply from its post, as if the flag itself had given up its duty, too. Tadhg wondered idly if they’d even see it.

A heavy hand fell on Tadhg’s shoulder as Captain Red Rowan materialized behind him, fully dressed. He seemed to consider saying something encouraging, before abandoning the idea to a morbid silence. The crew around him drifted about like ghosts, eying the raised flag as a terrible omen.

The free ocean miles around them, and yet, nowhere to go.

When The Red Dawn grew close, Tadhg could see the water ripple oddly around her flanks, and she pitched forward quicker than the wind could carry her. When they were close enough to see people on board, he realized the movement was propelled by a row of blue painted oars feathering out from low on each side. From any distance, they blended in easily with the tumultuous waters. The oars retreated into the boat smoothly as it drew up side-to-side with them, leaving no trace. Able to be hidden when docking, so no one would know their secret.

No one who would survive.

They boarded with a ferocity, even though The Great Deceptor’s crew stood by with anxious idleness. The deck swarmed with foreign members, quickly taking flank along the ship to guard the length. Their captain came last, and Tadhg’s heart sank. Phantom White stepped onto the deck in a long leather coat, bleached white like bone. His face obscured by his signature leather mask, tucked neatly into his hat. His eyes were dark gems in their shadows, and when they reached Tadhg, it felt like they were boring holes through him.

“I offer no struggle, only a bargain.” Rowan called.

That got White’s attention then, and he made his slow way over to Wild. He came to a stop within conversational distance, his masked face unreadable, still silent.

“I offer my ship and my crew in exchange for my life.”

Tadhg’s heart stopped, and he broke his best menacing face to stare at Wild Red in disbelief.

“Not a member of your crew will be harmed, and our bounty is yours. I can-”

Rowan was interrupted with a hard punch to the jaw, and Tadhg was stunned to realize it was delivered from his own fist.

“You fish bellied fucking coward!”

His hand instinctively went to his side, drawing his cutlass and thrusting it into the air.

“ERIN GO BRAGH, FIGHT YOU DOGS!”

Chaos broke around them as the crew scrambled for arms, some forgoing them in favor of ripping at the invaders with their bare hands.

Tadhg had a fleeting moment of hope, a single thought that just maybe they had a chance, before Phantom White’s blade cut his hand into two halves with a single blow. Tadhg’s favorite sword clattered to the deck, and a leather-clad arm grabbed him about the throat, pulling his head into a crushing embrace. He frantically clawed at the arm, but his cut hand’s fingers flopped backwards unnaturally. With some wriggling he managed to tuck his chin under his grip and he bit down, his teeth sinking into the thick supple leather and catching him easily. There was a blinding hit to the back of his head, and night fell suddenly for Tadhg.

He woke up to darkness again, a blindfold wrapped thickly around his eyes. As he collected his thoughts, he recognized he was upright, sitting bound to a chair, probably from the captain’s quarters. His head throbbed in waves of pain, and the agony from his hand was so intense that he clenched his fist on instinct, as if to pull away from the sensation.

His hand was bound tightly together, pinned behind his back with his other fist. His jaw ached from a knotted rag stuffed into his mouth, keeping his jaw forced open and held in with a tightly bound rag around his head. He moaned in discomfort, shaking his head to try to dislodge the makeshift device and his whole head pulsed in pain. He prodded at the gag with his tongue, but it was caught behind his teeth and he struggled to bite down.

The bony back of a hand smashed the left side of his face, startling him into plaint submission as he searched sightlessly for his captor.

“Quite the excitement you had today, dear boy.” A rough voice spoke, low and timely.

“Mhhhhhnnnnhhhhwwhhhnnn,” Tadhg articulated back.

A low chuckle.

“You tried your best, but your crew was easily overwhelmed.”

Tadhg’s heart sank into his stomach. He didn't even get to go out fighting with his crew.

“They didn’t go without a fight, though. Gave me a few positions to refill, and I find myself suddenly in need of a new right hand man.”

Tadhg told him precisely how much he could go fuck himself, but all that came out was muffled sounds of anger.

The striking hand patted his cheek.

“You do fight like a dog. I could use a mutt. Or, I could chum what’s left of your crew. I’ll give you some time to think about it.

Tadhg swallowed with some difficulty around the rag, but sat still.

“I have to finish a few negotiations with your good ol’ cap, and we can seal it.”

Tadhg wasn’t sure what would be required to “seal it”, but he didn’t have much choice. He listened to the creak of the wood as this - new captain stalked away.

New. Because with a sinking feeling, he already knew. He would take the deal. Of course he would. He only hoped there actually were surviving members of his crew left to be saved.

He rolled the memory over in his mind like the last sip of whiskey in his mouth. His Captain, stoned and stumbling, unwilling to lift a finger towards their survival. A little more “all for one” than “one for all”. Back in the day Wild Red Rowan slaughtered vikings and freed their slaves. Freed then, with nowhere to go, Tadhg had joined his crew with an unwavering loyalty.

A loyalty that had brought him up through the ranks fast.

A loyalty that may very well have just cost the entire ship their lives.

He hung his aching head.

Less rhino horn could ruin better men than his temperamental leader. But Tadhg was devoted, and it regularly earned him a place in the Captain’s bed just long enough to be used for what he was good for. He felt heavy with shame to think on those nights now, and where it had landed him.

He dozed off in the chair somehow, this knowledge only gleaned when he was startled awake with a hand squeezing his sore jaw.

“Enough beauty rest. Your captain has agreed to a most generous offer.”

Tadhg raised his blind, heavy head, and the hand released him.

“As for you… you’ll serve on my ship. Ten year’s debt. Many of your kin here have accepted. What say you?”

Tadhg gnawed on the gag and finally nodded. His heart sank with his submission, knowing the little freedom he’d been given had been sold away again so easily.

Tugging at the back of his head, strands of hair rip free with the rope binding. The wrap around his eyes loosens and falls, and he blinks harshly against the oil lamps illuminating the room. As they adjusted, he struggled to understand what he saw.

Phantom White, sitting on the edge of Red’s bed. His white coat splattered with blood and gore, some still shining wet in the light. In place of his white mask was a crude red mass, the edges secured with sinew around his head. Out of the gruesome mess, Tadhg recognized a human face. The scar on his nose… no. No.

His captain’s face, the flayed skin stretched into a gruesome mask.

Bile rose in his throat, only kept down by the gag. The lips were swollen and split, stretched brutally around the new captain’s own mouth, the hollow eye sockets grimly forced open around dark eyes underneath. What he could see of the face beneath was painted in blood that had begun to tacky in the cool salt air.

He screamed in his gag then, like a rabbit in the jaws of a wolf. Screamed with a terror that dripped down his leg. The twisted mask of Rowan’s face bulged around the ties securing it around Phantom White’s head. The bloody fileting knife still was held in one hand, viscera caked down to the end of the handle and smeared in his palms. Tadhg rocked backwards in his chair as hard as he could, barely gaining another inch away from the monster before him.

“You don’t think I wear it as fine as him? He might still like it back, though he has grown quiet since.”

Phantom drew an orange from his pocket and raised his blade, splitting the fruit in two with a practiced flick. He opened his mouth - both mouths - wide enough to sink his teeth into the flesh, the smell of sugar cutting through the stench of blood as the juice dripped down both chins.

Tadhg sobbed and wretched dryly, thankful of his empty stomach.

“You’ll do what the fuck I say, when I say it.”

Tadhg nodded again, heart hammering. He could not cease the tears of sheer terror tracking down his cheeks and soaking into his gag.

White drew closer, drawing whimpers and sobs from Tadhg as the bound man struggled in vain to pull away from the advancing captain.

His peeling face loomed close to his and Tadhg closed his eyes, anticipating teeth to tear his own in shreds. \

The knife dug into his cheek and he shrieked as it carved down, the acid of the orange stinging like salt in the wound. It split through the wrap around his mouth and withdrew, the sides falling away from his face and releasing his gag.

He opened his eyes wide and saw him staring back, deep set eyes under his fleshy disguise. Phantom’s bloody hand covered his mouth before he could spit out the knot over his tongue.

“We have a deal. The only thing I want to hear out of your fucking mouth is “Yes, Captain.” Are we clear?”

Tadhg nodded, trembling. Paralyzed under his grip.

The hand released and he spat out the last of the gag, struggling down a swallow to clear his throat.

“You’re mine now.”

Phantom’s face loomed closer and pressed the limp, bloody lips of a corpse’s face against his. An invading tongue pressed against his lips, coaxing his own mouth open to accept the kiss.

Numbed by shock, Tadhg accepted, and a warm tongue pushed into his mouth, tasting of blood and oranges. The kiss deepened, and then pulled back, a string of red spit breaking between their mouths as they parted.

“Yes, Captain.”

Ghostbusters (2016, Paul Feig)

Ghostbusters is a 2016 film directed by Paul Feig.

The film marks the reboot of the series of the same name, with a new team of female Ghostbusters, played by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

Abby Yates and Erin Gilbert are two theoretical physics scholar who together wrote a book in which they argue that paranormal phenomena, such as ghosts, really exist. Abby, Erin and Jillian witness the first physical manifestation of a ghost they have ever seen, filming it and posting the video on YouTube, which leads to Erin's immediate dismissal and her loss of all credibility as a scientist by the entire community university.

Abby, Erin and Jillian manage to capture the ghost with their proton packs and film the operation, but their footage is once again mocked by the Internet public. Patty decides to join the team, making herself useful as she knows New York city very well and provides the group with a vehicle, a repurposed Cadillac hearse borrowed from her uncle.

When Rowan plants one of the devices in a venue where a heavy metal concert is being held, the Ghostbusters are called in and capture the ghost in front of the audience.

During the credits, Patty listens to a recording of an encounter with a ghost and asks the other three Ghostbusters if they have ever heard of Zuul.

~ Abigail "Abby" Yates, played by Melissa McCarthy, is a scholar of the paranormal world, willing to do anything to prove her theories.

~ Erin Gilbert, played by Kristen Wiig, Abby's best friend, was nominated to become a professor at Columbia University, a job she lost after it was revealed she co-authored a book about ghosts with Yates.

~ Jillian Holtzmann, played by Kate McKinnon, is a nuclear engineer, rebellious and courageous.

~ Patricia "Patty" Tolan, played by Leslie Jones, is a New York subway employee.

~ Kevin Beckman, played by Chris Hemsworth, is the secretary of the Ghostbusters, a muscular and charming but extremely dumb and childish boy, who can't even answer the phone.

~ Rowan North, played by Neil Casey, the film's main antagonist, is a mad scientist who becomes a ghost and attempts to unleash an army of ghosts to destroy the city.

~ Bradley, played by Andy García, is the Mayor of New York.

The protagonists of the first two Ghostbusters films participate in the film in some cameos:

- Bill Murray, Dr. Martin Heiss, a debunker who doesn't belive in the paranormal;

- Dan Aykroyd, a taxi driver;

- Ernie Hudson, Bill Jenkins, Patty Tolan's uncle;

- Sigourney Weaver, Rebecca Gorin, Jillian Holtzmann's professor and mentor;

- Annie Potts, the receptionist at the Mercado Hotel.

Ozzy Osbourne, Al Roker, Pat Kiernan, Cheryl Wills, Rosanna Scotto and Greg Kelly also participate in the film, playing themselves.

Syberton Marcelle Miller has been sentenced to eight years in prison for fatally stabbing her husband back in 2018. However, the woman who is in her late 60s, only has three and half years left behind bars, as a result of several credits and discounts given to her. Even so, lead defence attorney Arthur Holder signaled his intention to head to the Court of Appeal, moments after Justice Carlisle Greaves handed down the sentence in the No. 3 Supreme Court on Friday. The starting sentence for Miller’s crime was 12 years, and after the judge gave her a one-third discount for her guilty plea, she was left with eight years behind bars. From that time, 1 286 days – the time she had already spent on remand – were deducted, leaving the convicted woman with the three and a half years left to serve at Dodds. Miller had previously been charged with murder but was indicted before the High Court on the offence of manslaughter. She pleaded guilty to the charge earlier this year, admitting that she killed her spouse, Cecil Miller, between September 17 and 18, 2018. On Friday afternoon, the court heard from Senior Crown Counsel Neville Watson that the two had been married since 1977 and resided at No. 92, 5th Avenue Rowans Park North, St George. On September 17, the two were at home along with the deceased’s twin sister, Cecily, and were apparently making arrangements to take her to the Psychiatric Hospital the following day to see Dr Ermine Belle whom she had been seeing for an extended period. The sister then went home, and sometime around 7:37 p.m. she messaged her brother on his cellular phone but did not get a response. Around 10:28 p.m., however, she would receive a message from her brother’s phone, which stated: “Everything is okay. Do not think I will need you for a meeting with Dr Belle. world building cause twn doesn't pt. 2: nilfgaard!

pt. 1 on the northern realms here

okay i'm making this because 1 witcher netflix is the most convoluted and confusing thing i've ever seen and does literally no world building and 2 special interest make autism brain go brr.

about this series

this is gonna be a multi part series about the witcher universe but this is all about nilfgaard!

ciri's timeline in twn encompasses the entirety of the first northern war, beginning with the attack on cintra and ending with the battle at sodden

the show ended in 1264 when we saw geralt meet ciri

this is just covering the human portions of nilfgaard. i'll talk about elven allied groups like the scoiatael later.

background

the witcher takes place on the continent, which is mainly divided between south and north

the north is a collection of many kingdoms while the south is basically just nilfgaard and its many territories, dependencies, provences, and vassal states.

some of these conquered areas include toussaint, vicovaro, nazair, and mettina

nilfgaard loves invading the north. a lot. like this is the driving force of most of the plot in the witcher.

basic info

nilfgaard an insanely powerful absolutist monarchy, ruled by an emperor who has a huge collection of talented mages, spies, commanders, and advisors

as of ciri's timeline in twn, the emperor is emhyr var emreis, or, to those on more intimate terms with him: the white flame dancing on the graves of his foes

[ID: middle aged white man with slicked back shoulder length greying black hair. he is wearing a black dress with a red and black embroidered shirt underneath. he is wearing a gold medallion around his neck, has black leather boots, and is holding a silver goblet. end ID]

emhyr is crazy important, both as a character and to the politics of the witcher. he's also a member of the house of emreis, which i'll go into detail on in a bit.

he is also a major walking spoiler, so i won't talk about him in the context of twn or the books

nilfgaard is divided between the "heart" of the empire, also known as lower alba or simply nilfgaard, and the conquered territories, dependencies, provinces, etc

for all of nilfgaard's imperialism, it does allow these areas to retain a lot of their original cultural identity, to the point where someone from vicovaro would not really consider themself nilfgaardian

this works out because nilfgaard would not consider a vicovarian nilfgaardian either

lower alba

lower alba is the home of "real" nilfgaardians, and is also where the capital city is located

theres a bit of racism and racial purity here: lower albans consider themselves superior to the rest of humans due to their elven ancestry

this elven ancestry is also why nilfgaard is far more sympathetic to nonhumans than the north and uses a language similar to hen llinge (elder speech)

there are a LOT of notable albans, so i'll just keep it to the important ones and my favourites: carthia van canten aka cantarella, morvran voorhis, stefan skellen, the house of emreis, and vattier de rideaux

the capital, known as the city of golden towers or simply nilfgaard, is home to the imperial palace, where the emperor spends most of his time

i say most because there is also a summer residence at loc grim palace

now that we know the basics of the core empire, let's visit the other territories!

toussaint

the duchy of toussaint is one of the most important nilfgaardian states, and definitely the most beautiful. it's main economy is in wine

toussaint actually has no secret service or military, something quite rare on the continent. it does however, have a large system of knights errant that love chivalry

the capital is beauclaire, which is where the duke/duchess live

as of twn, its ruler is the duchess anna henrietta. i'll let you all make your own assumptions about the lovely annarietta

also for some reason in toussaint, people have 2 names that are smushed together. so anna henrietta becomes annarietta, sylvia anna becomes syanna, carolina roberta becomes caroberta etc

annarietta is also distantly related to emhyr, her great grandfather is the half brother of emhyr's father

the most notable toussaintois are the mages fringilla and artorius vigo

vicovaro

"THERE ONCE WAS A MAID FROM VICOVARO..."

okay vicovaro is vassal state near the southernmost part of the empire, but we know it more for the people from it than what it actually is

there is an actual ruler, but the state is largely controlled by two key houses: the var anahid family and the dyffryn family

the capital is vicovaro, but the houses have their own land. we don't really hear about the var anahids, but the dyffyn house controls dyffra

notable vicovarians include assire var anahid and cahir mawr dyffryn aep ceallach. cahir in twn is right there.

mettina

okay mettina is a bit confusing since it is the shared name for three different places. the first is the administrative unit mettina, which includes the provence mettina (2) and the provence maecht. in the provence there is also the capital city mettina (3).

tor lara aka the tower of the swallow is in mettina, and not much else tbh

maecht was the home of duny (that little man) for an unspecified number of years

"wait! i thought duny was the urcheon of erlenwald, and that's in cintra!" don't... don't think too hard about duny. he lived in mettina for a while and took a trip to cintra where he met pavetta.

ebbing

for all intents and purposes, ebbing is an autonomous state, although nilfgaardians do have a hand on the wheel

includes salm, a technically sovereign provence, but is de facto dependent on ebbing

ebbing is most notably home to stygga castle, the one time fortress for the school of the cat, and bounty hunter leo bonhart

also, roegner of ebbing, pavetta's father, is from here

nazair

nazair is kinda the least important of the more important nilfgaardian dependencies

it was independent for a while but was conquered by cintra under queen calanthe and then nilfgaard under emperor emhyr

its main industries are cinnabrite and silver, both luxury goods

the only mildly important nazairi is becca of nazair, ciri's 6 times great grandmother

other minor areas

alba, toussaint, ebbing, and vicovaro are really the only important nilfgaardian areas, although mettina and nazair are mentioned quite a bit. borders change a lot, especially with an imperialist power, but this is the general list of nilfgaardian areas as of the first northern war

regions - daerlan (notable for military), eiddon (owned and ruled by alban spy vattier de rideaux), liddertall, magne, rowan, ruach, slopes (home to haern caduch, the bear school fortress), tarnhann, winneburg, and ymlac

provences - angren provence (contains dol angra, a profitable trade route), cintra (1264-1268), etolia, gemmera, geso, mag turga, mettina (contains kingdoms mettina and maecht), and nazair

vassals - cintra (after 1268), ebbing, toussaint, and vicovaro

tl;dr: the most important part of nilfgaard is lower alba, which is surrounded by many dependencies including toussaint, vicovaro, nazair, and mettina.

i mostly ask about elven things to you so i want to spice it up. 😭 do you think that ferelden not having an heir to the throne will be an issue in later games? there's no heir that comes from any of the endings (cousland-anora, anora-alistair, cousland-alistair), and it was heavily hinted that anora is infertile in origins. We also know that Cailan was unfaithful during their marriage. Do you think ANOTHER ferelden royal bastard (cailan's child) could be in the future?

Hi Nonnie! Cut because not everyone is comfortable reading about this topic. TN spoilers under cut.

If there’s no heir it would be an issue for the country regardless (not in my literal opinion but in terms of how the people are said to approach things to do with their monarchy in the fictional nation), and the further forward the narrative moves temporally from 9:30 the bigger that issue becomes for it. By 9:44 Anora is around 38-40? years of age (Cailan was born in 9:05). Warden-Queens by then are at least 32 (and that’s only if they were 18 when they left Highever). Eamon began expressing his concerns to Cailan as Anora approached her thirtieth year, though age isn’t really relevant in the Warden-Queen’s case as it’s not possible with two Wardens anyway and irl 32 is ofc plenty young.

I guess in some universes Kieran is part of the Theirin bloodline but in lots of other universes he’s not or he doesn’t exist. It’s worth noting that Alistair as sole ruler is a potential ending also (both with a Warden-lover and without), and though still apparently unmarried and childless by the time of Inquisition, he could marry a non-Warden and father children that way. It’s more difficult to do if you’re a Warden but if the other person isn’t a Warden it is possible. If you’re romancing Alistair and make him King as a non-Cousland he’s plainly aware of the need for him to marry and produce an heir. So some versions of Ferelden aren’t necessarily facing the issue at all. Saying that though, maybe they still are? The Taint decreases fertility, and during the OGB conversation Morrigan’s line about Riordan being unsuitable as a candidate because she needs a Warden who hasn’t been tainted for too long otherwise it wouldn’t work - while said in reference to the DR specifically - could imply that the longer a Warden has been tainted for, the lower their already low chances of conceiving are, and that after some timepoint it drops off completely and permanently and then it is no longer possible at all. And due to the overall effect of the Taint on the body as it progresses towards the Calling point, I can see that. And by 9:44 King Alistair has been tainted for like 15 years. You could also get into headcanon land that when the Hero (in this case a Warden-Queen, or indeed any Hero that would feel inclined to pass the cure to King Alistair) returned from their quest to find a cure for the Calling (imo they all did return at least because why would only Lelimancers return), they brought with them a cure. But would a cure for the Taint restore fertility as well as ridding someone of the Taint? Total stab in the dark here I know, but I’d guess at it being able to rid a body of the Taint but not be able to reverse the effects it had on the body’s reproductive system.

But whether it’s an issue for us, the player, to encounter or solve, or whether they just write in another Theirin bastard - I’m just guessing of course but I don’t see the story taking us back to the topic regardless, especially not as a major or significant beat. Not speaking for everyone but I think we’re pretty Ferelden’d out after 3 games set there and the other game with a Fereldan PC. The move north not only brings lots of fresh new stuff to cover but also a handy opportunity to leave that kind of thing behind, or largely off-screen at least. I could see it arising in codex entries akin to the letters in Return to Ostagar, ambient or passing dialogue, or via a war table-esque mechanic. I could also see the story functionally ignoring the issue as it has done thus-far, unless it came to a point where it would somehow need to be acknowledged, then maybe them writing around all the different combinations with something like “the monarch[s] abdicated due to lack of an heir and oh hey look, it’s King Fergus and a new wife or King Teagan or someone else” or somesuch. The Theirins have sat on the Fereldan throne since Calenhad, except during the Orlesian occupation, but sole Queen Anora and Queen Anora-Cousland Consort scenarios show that things won’t implode if it’s a Mac Tir or a Mac Tir and a Cousland on the seat instead. The Guerrin family also have (or had at least) a claim to the throne through Maric’s marriage to Rowan, and the Drydens had a strong claim in the Storm Age. Fereldan noble succession can get complicated and it’s not always strictly hereditary. I also feel that the Fereldan royal Theirin bastard beat has been done and doesn’t need rehashed with a new one. There could be a new monarch written in without them being a Theirin bastard.

It’s also worth considering the fact that Cailan himself may have been unable to have children. He was involved with multiple other women, as Anora tells us, and yet there’s no proper hint of a Cailan bastard? Hmmm. The rumors were that Anora wasn’t able to have children, but Cailan’s ability to do so is another important part of that equation. Historically irl when this sort of thing happened it was usually the woman who got blamed iirc, but male infertility is responsible for a similar percentage of infertility cases, and in one third or even the biggest chunk of cases, it is due to combined problems on both parts. Maybe Anora can but Cailan couldn’t, or neither of them could.

If we are to encounter yet another succession crisis/choose-a-ruler-style storybeat (like we’ve done with the Fereldan throne, which Divine and the Orlesian throne), say, in the next game, it would be neat if it was something else like a new Archon or the Nevarran throne. The latter has been flagged somewhat. King Markus is old and in poor health and questionable state of mind. He doesn’t have any children and his brother is also old and doesn’t have children, and the brother also has no interest in ruling. The Mortalitasi are currently basically ruling through Markus and Van Markhams, Pentaghasts and others from other families have been vying for the position. The unstable line of succession was even a recent plotpoint in Tevinter Nights. I guess I’m kind of eager for the potential/possibility of next meddling in Nevarran affairs, lol.
