⚡ - Charging Towards a More Electrifying Future

1. The Kissimmee River has been brought back to life—and wildlife is thriving

The Kissimmee River in Florida was straightened in the 1960s, causing a sharp decline in wildlife and ecological problems. But in the 1990s, a $1 billion restoration project was initiated to restore the river's natural state.

Today, nearly half of the river has been restored, wetlands have been reestablished and rehydrated, and wildlife has returned, including rare and threatened species. Already the biological impact of the project has become clear. As the wetlands have come back, so have the birds.

2. Plastic wrap made from seaweed withstands heat and is compostable

A cling film made from an invasive seaweed can withstand high temperatures yet is still easily compostable. The material could eventually become a sustainable choice for food packaging.

Scientists started with a brown seaweed called sargassum. Sargassum contains long, chain-like molecules similar to those that make up conventional plastic, which made it a good raw material. The researchers mixed it with some acids and salts to get a solution full of these molecules, then blended in chemicals that thickened it and made it more flexible and pliable.

3. An Eagle Who Adopted a Rock Becomes a Real Dad to Orphaned Eaglet

Murphy, a bald eagle that had been showing fatherly instincts, has been sharing an enclosure with an eaglet that survived a fall from a tree during a storm in Ste. Genevieve. Murphy, his rock gone by then, took his role as foster parent seriously. He soon began responding to the chick’s peeps, and protecting it.

And when, as a test, the keepers placed two plates of food in front of the birds — one containing food cut into pieces that the chick could eat by itself, and another with a whole fish that only Murphy could handle — the older bird tore up the fish and fed it to the eaglet.

4. World's largest battery maker announces major breakthrough in energy density

In one of the most significant battery breakthroughs in recent years, the world’s largest battery manufacturer CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg which it says will go into mass production this year.

“The launch of condensed batteries will usher in an era of universal electrification of sea, land and air transportation, open up more possibilities of the development of the industry, and promote the achieving of the global carbon neutrality goals at an earlier date,” the company said in a presentation at Auto Shanghai on Thursday.

This could be huge. Electric jets and cargo ships become very possible at this point.

5. Cat with '100% fatal' feline coronavirus saved by human Covid-19 medicine

A beloved household cat has made an “astonishing” recovery from a usually fatal illness, thanks to a drug made to treat Covid-19 in humans – and a quick-thinking vet.

Anya​, the 7-year-old birman cat, was suffering from feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a “100% fatal” viral infection caused by feline coronavirus. That was, until Auckland vet Dr Habin Choi​ intervened, giving Anya an antiviral used to treat Covid-19 called molnupiravir.

6. Kelp forests capture nearly 5 million tonnes of CO2 annually

Kelp forests provide an estimated value of $500 billion to the world and capture 4.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from seawater each year. Most of kelp’s economic benefits come from creating habitat for fish and by sequestering nitrogen and phosphorus.

7. Medical Marijuana Improved Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms in 87% of Patients

Medical cannabis (MC) has recently garnered interest as a potential treatment for neurologic diseases, including Parkinson's disease (PD). 87% of patients were noted to exhibit an improvement in any PD symptom after starting medical cannabis. Symptoms with the highest incidence of improvement included cramping/dystonia, pain, spasticity, lack of appetite, dyskinesia, and tremor.

I MAY HAVE FIGURED OUT THE INGREDIENTS FOR THE FORMULA/SERUM/WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT FROM THE STRANGE CASE OF DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE!!!

- Phosphorus, white phosphate appears as a salt like substance/white or yellow waxy solid, when it reacts with oxygen it becomes green, when ingested it causes warmth/burning pains in the throat, feelings of intense thirst and abdominal pain. Could also cause hallucinations and personality changes.

- Magnesium, an overdose can potentially make hallucinations worse if you are already having them.

- Antimony, purely for the reason that in alchemy, antimony represents the "animalistic parts of human nature"

- Mercury, general intake causes, among other things, problems with memory, emotional changes, mental health issues, headaches and difficulty sleeping

- Salt, not that toxic unless there's mass amounts of it in your system at once, purely here so the formula tastes nicer.

AITA for cooking meth with my former chemistry student, killing two people, and lying to my family about it?

I (50M) was recently diagnosed with inoperable, likely fatal lung cancer. I work at a highschool as a chemistry teacher, but both the pay and the students are terrible. Case in point, my "lab partner" (24M) - who we'll call "Cap'n" because of course he'd insist on a stupid nickname like that - not only completely flunked my class, but then went on to skip college entirely and become a meth-addicted drug dealer instead.

Understandably, I was a little shaken after receiving my diagnosis. It came as a surprise since I've never smoked, I keep myself in relatively fair health, etc. (Recently my wife has taken to vegan bacon- apparently it helps lower cholesterol, but I digress.) I haven't told my family about the situation yet; I'm still trying to figure out how to "let the cat out of the bag", not to mention I doubt my wife will take it very well.

As for deciding to try cooking methamphetamine, well. I'm not really sure how to explain it, exactly, but there's a lot of money in it, money that would benefit my family, and I don't have much to lose anymore. This may sound cliche, but it's as though I'm really awake for the first time in my life.

Cap'n and I formed a partnership by circumstance only; I found out he was in "the business" and offered to either turn him into the DEA or work with me, and he naturally took the second option. He had no idea what he was doing on the chemistry side of things - chili powder in the meth! applying heat to an Erlenmeyer flask! no wonder I flunked him, he clearly learned nothing in my class - but does know the trade.

(Note: Don't buy all of your supplies from the same store.)

Sorry, I'm getting too far into the weeds here, let me skip ahead. We purchased a trailer and drove out to somewhere in the middle of the desert to cook without added attention or need for dramatic cleanup if we had to leave the area in a hurry. Our first batch was, according to Cap'n, "pure glass." After all of that complaining, I had cooked the finest product he'd ever seen on the first try! Goes to show paying attention in school does pay off, ahem. In case any of you were reading this and thinking of skipping off to go and make highly illegal substances and risk years in prison instead of doing your homework. You all still have your entire lives ahead of you. I don't.

After making it, the next logical course of action was to sell. Cap'n said he had some connections - I mean, he is a drug dealer, I saw no reason not to trust him (I now see how little sense that makes.) - and came back with two men with guns pointed at both of us. You must understand, it was a kill or be killed situation. These are the kind of people who don't care about morals, or what's right or ethical or kind. If they'd lived... not just me, but my wife, my son, and my entire family would all be in serious, mortal danger. I had no choice.

Cap'n by this point had been knocked out cold- still alive, but entirely unhelpful with the situation at hand. I was on my own. So I offered to show the goons how I made the "glass", surely they wanted to see how it was done? And they did- I still can't believe that actually worked. But, ah, instead of actually cooking anything, I gave them... let's call it a chemistry lesson. When significant heat is applied to red phosphorus - a key ingredient in Cap'n and I's "extracurricular science project" - it oxidizes. Your result is phosgene gas, highly deadly, hence the "killing two people." One... technically isn't dead yet- somehow he managed to survive, I still don't fully understand how, but I'm... I'm working on it. Cap'n still has yet to get rid of the first body, so... technically I'm not failing to withhold my share of the cleanup, since he hasn't done so with his.

I realize now this is very long, but I wanted to explain the context for my actions. However, a tl;dr for those who might be in a hurry: I was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, so with nothing else to lose decided to try to make some money for my family by cooking and selling methamphetamine. Coincidentally, a former student of mine was also in the business, and I convinced him to work with me. When we tried to put our product on the market, two people tried to kill us, so I acted in self-defense.

But I really, really must know... is what I did wrong? Should I have been content to live the rest of however-long-I-have-left working a miserable job as a public high school chemistry teacher instead? Should I have found a less fatal way of dealing with the two men who tried to kill me and my partner? AITA?

YEAHHHH ANON WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT THE MOONS!!!!

Okay so I'm going to keep this as tl;dr as possible because it would be VERY easy to go off on a tangent so I am sticking JUST to stuff where the moon or Moon Sisters are explicitly mentioned.

So according to Heart's Desire, vol. 3, there used to be three moons over Teyvat instead of one:

Aria - name is Italian for a single-performer vocal piece in an opera, but derives from the Latin for "air"

Sonnet - like the poem, but derives from an old proto-Romance word for "sound'

Canon - musical composition based around multi-voiced imitation; derives from Greek and Latin word for "law" or "rule."

(Make of these etymologies what you will.)

According to Moonlit Bamboo Forest(MBF), vol. 3 :

the Moon Sisters are older than Morax (more than 6,000 years old)

they're referred to as "daughters of prose and song"

they "ruled over the night sky," trading shifts in moving across the heavens in a silver carriage (think Helios in Greek myth with his chariot)

they were in love with "the stars of daybreak"/the "morning stars."

It should be noted that "morning star" is a term often associated with "dawn bringer," it may be associated with Phanes, the Primordial One (who is also known as Eosphorus/Phosphorus or Lucifer depending on which versions of Greek/Orphic/Latinized mythology you're looking at). Since MBF refers specifically to "the chambers of the morning stars," this may imply that the anthropomorphic "stars" are the Shades that Phanes made of itself.

Something caused the Moon Sisters to turn against one another, and the single remaining moon in Teyvat right now is the one remaining corpse out of three. (yikes.)

According to Records of Jueyun, vol. 4:

the three sisters were witness to a union between one of the Seelie and "a traveler from afar."

a great "calamity" fell 30 days later. (Whether the union is directly related to the calamity is EXTREMELY unclear, although some people [pooossibly myself included] theorize that the outlander who fell in love with the Seelie was the Second Who Came from beyond the firmament, who eventually challenged the Primordial One to the throne and lost. For more on this, see the Byakuyakoku Collection.)

For some miscellaneous flavor, here are some things associated with the moon/s that have caught my eye as I've played Genshin

Mondstadt literally translates to "Moon City" in German.

Liyue (璃月) makes use of the characters for "glass/colored glaze" and "moon."

Speaking of Liyue, the osmanthus flower is associated with the full moon and the Mid-Autumn festival. In Chinese legend, the first osmanthus plant is on the moon.

Glaze Lilies only grow at night.

There are WAY too many mentions of serpents consuming the moon and/or sun in various mythologies across the world. I'm probably going to have to make a mega-post about snakes and serpents in Genshin at some point.

Nahida calls herself "just the Moon" when we first meet her. In context, she means that she is only a reflection of Rukkhadevata's former glory, but I still find it relevant that she calls herself the moon when her appearance is so similar to what the Moon Sisters are supposed to look like.

The description for the Nilotpala Lotus refers to a moon goddess (singular) and the chariot. Nilotpalas only bloom at night. (It's interesting that the "fake" lotus, Kalpalata, is Nahida's ascension material and not the Nilotpala.)

The lore for the Xiphos' Moonlight sword suggests that the Moon Sisters were capable of "determining heroes' fates." This is most likely a reference to the three Fates of Greek mythology, who controlled the birth, life and death of all humans.

Aaand most recently, in Lyney's character teaser, we get to see him holding the full moon in his hands! In the Rider-Waite tarot, the Moon is a symbol for lies, deception and illusion. This doesn't just have to apply to Lyney - it's something I've been thinking about for as long as I've known about the Moon Sisters.

Fusing The Batman (2004) with the main continuity. Back during Dick’s days as Robin, Garfield Lynns, AKA Firefly, worked with Dr. Jane Blazedale, a partnership that ended with Lynns becoming Phosphorus and being remanded to Arkham Asylum. To the knowledge of neither Lynns nor the Bat, however, the partnership between Lynns and Dr. Blazedale also resulted in an unexpected pregnancy. Dr. Blazedale named the boy Benjamin, Benji for short. Following a revelation about his father's identity, Benji decides to sneak into one of Lynns's old hideouts and steals the Firefly equipment.

Tim Drake, Young Just Us, Caitlin Snow, & Batfamily Members - Snowfall

Tim is investigating a case involving Mr. Freeze and a dangerous ice machine powered by a Self-Sustaining Thermodynamic Ultraconductor Engine. During the fight, however, Tim gets knocked into the STU engine, taking out the coolant system and causing the whole thing to explode. In the aftermath, Tim discovers that he has become a heat vampire, much like Caitlin Snow, AKA Frost.

Damian Wayne, Jonathan Samuel Kent, Kathy Branden, & Maya Ducard - Young Titans: Beginnings

Damian Wayne, AKA Robin, was well aware that each of his older brothers has had a super hero team to call their own. Richard led the Teen Titans and later the Titans. Todd led the Outlaws. Even Drake led Young Justice, as laughably immature as that team was. Damian, though, has yet to lead a team of his own. He decides to change that. Enlisting the aid of his friend Jon Kent, AKA Superboy, Damian sets out to form his own team of superheroes: the Young Titans!

Billy Batson & Dick Grayson - Batson and the Bat’s Son

Dick Grayson has tracked a labor trafficking ring from Blüdhaven to Fawcett City. Witnessing some of the ring's thugs kidnapping a kid off the street, Nightwing follows them back to their base of operations. He busts the trafficking ring and frees all of the kidnapped persons, including that night's victim, Billy Batson. With Billy unconscious, though, Nightwing turns him over to Child Welfare Services. On a gut feeling, he asks Oracle to see what she can find on the kid. After discovering Billy's homelessness and looking into his history with foster care, though, Dick decides to foster him. Billy allows it (for now) only because he knows Dick is Nightwing, and so Billy trusts him. Dick, for his part, slowly realizes that Billy reminds him way too much of himself when Bruce took him in. And Dick doesn’t even have an Alfred to help. Oh no.

Researchers develop biodegradable polymers that are traceable without toxic contrast agents

Polyphosphoesters, molecules containing phosphorus as the central element, are easily traceable without the need for contrast agents, thanks to developments by researchers from the University of Twente (UT). Normally, these molecules display a similar molecular composition to our DNA, leading to considerable "noise" in the image. The UT researchers provided a solution and developed unique polymers that are traceable with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Dr. Olga Koshkina, Project Leader in the Sustainable Polymer Chemistry Group, published this new concept of traceable polymers in Communications Chemistry. The researchers adjusted the properties of polyphosphoesters (special polymers with a molecular structure inspired by DNA and RNA). As a result, the polymers acquired a different "MRI color," making them more distinguishable from the natural background. Additionally, they exhibit other physical MRI characteristics suitable for imaging.

Episode 35 Breakdown

Dr Bai grabs Seamstress Miao by the throat, demanding to know who Snow Wolf is, but she refuses to unmask her leader. He leaves after threatening to kill them all if anything happens to Nurse Bai again. Electrician Liu Simao sees Officer Ding watch the shop, and creeps in the back door to advise Seamstress Miao that she has been compromised. She immediately sets out to burn several papers and a book before being stabbed by Liu Simao. He tries to take her bag but she holds tight, and he has to flee empty handed when the police arrive, and she dies without any confession. Searching her shop, the police team find her radio equipment, maps of the air raid shelter location and the negatives of the blueprint photos.

On the last day of the experiment, Expert Chief Chu returns to the lab and instructs Ji Danyang to make the coundown and announcement of the experiment's successful end. The cabin team are helped out of the sealed cabin, rejoicing in the sunlight and Ji Danyang finds He Xiwan still inside. She completes logging the last page of data and gives it to him before collapsing from exhaustion.

Master Welder Niu finds the hidden compartment in the cabin with the empty phosphorus bottle inside, concluding it was made by Assistant Rui. Police Captain Chen debriefs Officer Xu who participated in the experiment, focussing on the movements of Nurses Bai and Shanshan, but is at a loss as to how they would know they would get inside. Police Captain Chen has the Hospital Chief review the medical checks of the cabin participants and they discover that the expert who collapsed shouldn't have been given clearance at all. He compiles a list of the medical staff involved in the fitness checks and the Police Chief suggests allowing Nurse Shanshan back to work to see what reaction is provoked.

Officer Hongmei, still recovering from her mercury poisoning, visits Dr Bai and informs him of the seamstresses murder and identity as a spy, and that they'd found her father's body with the help of an anonymous key. Ji Danyang takes a break from analysing the cabin data to visit Officer Hongmei in hospital and they discuss where they might go now this part of the project is coming to an end.

In the expert's office, Lei Peizheng notices one of his titanium samples is missing and reports it to the police team. They check Factory Chief Han's samples and find the missing piece amongst them, but one of his absent. Factory Chief Han questions Secretary Lu about the missing titanium, stating that if a man makes a mistake he should have the courage to correct it, but Secretary Lu still denies his involvement.

Secretary Lu is angry and meets Nurse Bai, demanding  to know once and for all if she is a spy and when she doesn't commit to an answer he tells her he plans to confess and if she if a spy to run. She slaps him. Their altercation is noticed by Nurse Zhang Ling and Nurse Leader Ge and Nurse Bai sees Nurse Ge watching from the window.

Good for him for finally deciding to confess, although will that slap make him change his mind? I really hope he does come forward on his own. He knows the scrutiny is closing in and so does Nurse Bai now. What's she going to do? She can only pin so much on Nurse Shanshan (which I'm still fuming about btw)

Seamstress Miao stabbed in the back (or front) by your cohort. That's what your loyalty to the wrong people will get you.

So who's left now? The still unidentified Snow Wolf, Nurse Bai (who is suspected), fake Li Qiuchen (who is suspected), electrician Liu Simao (who is confirmed and being searched for). At this point Nurse Bai and Fake Li haven't heard about the murder of the seamstress yet but it's not a secret in town so it wont be long. Do they even have another base of operation in town now that the seamstress shop is compromised? How will they pass messages along now?

3 episodes to go! What am I expecting? Whoever the fuck Snow Wolf is, they're going to have to show their face for one final attempt on the project (maybe trying to grab or destroy the data before it can be transported to Beijing?)

As a rule, the commited spies have died (Zhang A Shui, Lai Guangrun, Assitant Rui and Seamstress Miao) and the coerced traitors have been imprisoned (Security Captain Li, the messenger & the digging team). So Liu Simao and Fake Li wont survive, and Secretary Lu will be imprisoned... but what about Nurse Bai? She's a fully committed spy, but she's also one of our leads. I can't imagine her being killed off, it would be too tragic for our other leads. I'd wondered earlier about the possibility of a change of heart upon learning it was the KMT who killed her parents (the reveal of which I still expect) but she's done so much more sabotage since then that there's little to no room left for turning around. Will she just be imprisoned? Or will Dr Bai try and convince her to run away?
