We all like to joke about July being "Gay Wrath Month" but it's actually Disability Pride Month, so have the Disability Pride Flag from VGAPride and my AST Premmia LX MS-DOS machine

Imagine, for a moment, that your internet just stopped loading images one day. Your dash might look pretty different (and less usable), but at least you can still make posts — whether about your internet situation, or about completely unrelated topics.
Then, imagine that one or more of your posts blew up, to the tune of hundreds if not thousands of notes. Imagine people started adding images to your posts.
Imagine your post circulating almost entirely in the form with four or five images attached, and with everyone in the notes laughing about those images — except you, who started the post in the first place, who can't even see those images because you're trapped in Tumblr's loading gradient hellscape.
You're excluded from any further conversations on your own post, because someone added a mystery image with the caption "don't leave this in the tags," but you have no idea which set of tags it is, and can't tell if it's one of the good takes from the tags or one of the horrible takes from the tags. You're excluded from the Tumblr users playing with JPEGs like dolls. You can try to guess the contents of the images based on people's reactions, but it's hard. And no one adding images even seems to notice the irony.
This is, of course, a real problem plaguing Tumblr users with regularly slow internet. And it's also a huge, insidious problem plaguing blind and low vision people who rely on either screen readers, or image descriptions in combination with enlarged text on their device.
People with disabilities around comprehending images, people who have images (or gifs) disabled due to photosensitivity, and many others are also affected.
If you add an image to a post without either alt text, an in-post image description, or even both for maximal inclusivity, you don't know if OP — or the person whose tags you're peer reviewing, or whose reply you're screenshotting — will actually be able to see it. From their perspective, you might just be shoving a mystery rectangle in their face, expecting them to be able to guess — or responding to them without them being able to know.
Imagine being on the receiving end of that expectation constantly. Imagine how isolating that must feel.
We need, collectively, to stop making assumptions that everyone we interact with online will be able to access, physically see, and mentally process images. The assumption that disabled people are vanishingly rare and statistically shouldn't really need to be considered is an assumption of structural and/or implicit ableism.
Write image descriptions. Write image descriptions for every image you post, if you're able — but if you have limited energy, or you're still learning, you should at least start trying your absolute best to describe images you add to other people's posts. If you're starting a conversation, even an online conversation, you should make your best effort to be accessible.
So: Write IDs, especially if they're as simple as just text, like screenshotted tags (link to guide). Write IDs even if you think the best ID you can write is too short, or too incomplete (link to post explaining why even "bad" IDs help).
Write IDs in general (link to a huge compilation of guides). Challenge ableist assumptions and inaccessibility.

"you are HARASSING A CRIPPLE" ".....foot." "a shark ate it." for some reason this genre of humor (making everyone else vaguely uncomfortable by joking about your disability/bringing it up on every occasion a la "the weather is homophobic because it's inconveniencing me") is my favorite fucking thing. god i hope it continues. i hope izzy tells everyone he meets a different story about how he lost the leg (fought a lobster, cannonball incident, cursed by a witch, "what do you mean? my leg's right h--OH MY GOD"). i hope he has a spreadsheet entitled "jokes i can make now that i only have one leg". he's completely deadpan and no one knows whether they're allowed to laugh or not. it's great.

September 26, 2022 - Congratulations to the Cuban people for voting in favor of the Family Code! [article]
The new code guarantees the right of all people to form a family without discrimination, legalizing same sex marriage and allowing same sex couples to adopt children. Under the new code, parental rights will be shared among extended and non-traditional family structures that could include grandparents, step parents and surrogate mothers. The code also adds novelties such as prenuptial agreements and assisted reproduction.
The Code promotes equal distribution of domestic responsibilities amongst men and women and extends labor rights to those who care full-time for children, the elderly, or people with disabilities. The code establishes the right to a family life free from violence, one that values love, affection, solidarity and responsibility. It codifies domestic violence penalties, and promotes comprehensive policies to address gender-based violence.
The Code also outlaws child marriage and corporal punishment, stating that parents will have “responsibility” instead of “custody” of children, and will be required to be “respectful of the dignity and physical and mental integrity of children and adolescents.” It also asserts that parents should grant maturing offspring more say over their lives.
The new code also expands the rights of the elderly and people with disabilities. It recognizes the role of grandfathers and grandmothers in the transmission of values, culture, traditions and care.

"But Lucius is physically disabled and he survived, so it's fine to kill Izzy -"
As most of you know, I am physically disabled. Have to use a lot of very visible mobility aids, get stared at in the street, have kids asking uncomfortable questions, etc.
If you are also physically disabled and cannot see that there is a WORLD of difference between Lucius losing his finger and Izzy having a hugely traumatic, majorly life-changing disability thrust upon him, becoming suicidal, using alcohol to cope, crawling along the floor, hating himself and feeling useless and worthless, thinking he's a burden to the people he cared about because of his physical inability to protect them...
Then getting built up again by that same crew, given a beautiful prosthetic that they made for him, accepted and loved, and learning to accept and love himself specifically as a queer disabled man....
THEN SAYING EXPLICITLY THAT HE WANTS TO DIE, AFTER ALL OF THAT BEAUTIFUL GROWTH
If you cannot see how that might be JUST A LITTLE upsetting to other disabled cripplepunk folks....
I honestly do not know what to say to you.
His arc was about self-acceptance and self-love as a disabled queer man. To have him declare that he wanted to die after coming to terms with his disability and queerness is, in fact, going to upset a lot of disabled queer people.
If you are not physically disabled, feel free to reblog but don't say a word unless it's in support.
[Edited to remove the parts about Ed being canonically disabled, as someone kindly pointed out to me that they were incorrect. I hadn't realised that his knee brace was just fanon! The creators shouldn't get credit for creating a 'disabled' main character if the disability is only really acknowledged by fans.]

So something I absolutely adore about the way Izzy is depicted on screen with his new leg is that he is consistently leaning on or being supported by other characters. It's not all the time and it's not always just for mobility: Sometimes he has to lean on someone because he's fatigued or just a little off balance. And he has moments where he takes things slower or has to really push himself just to like sit down (like how he kind of groans when he sits down next to Stede at Spanish Jackie's.)
I'm not an amputee but I wear leg braces and my left hip is fucked and from my perspective this is a really accurate representation of disability on screen because it presents a balance between things Izzy can do and times he needs or wants help.
I don't watch a ton of movies or TV so maybe there have been better representations of disability on screen since when I was younger, but in the past, I noticed media that showed disability (especially with an able bodied actor in the role) would either 1. make the character visibly disabled but functionally able bodied (like a bionic arm or magically regaining the ability to walk once the plot requires it) or 2. just sideline the character from most of the action to get around times when the disability aspect would get in the way with traditional staging or action scenes. And they nearly never show someone leaning on another character unless absolutely necessary for obvious mobility reasons, not for things like being tired or regular background movement.
But ofmd shows different visible aspects of disability realistically and it's so much better for the characters and the story.
The same is true for Wee John in a lot of ways, he sits most of the time but is rarely removed from the action, and other characters move about him in an inclusive way.
Yeah. I love it all. It's so good.

thinkin about the people who think Ed's fanon disability, which exists only in headcanons, is more important than Izzy as actual canon disability rep and just
can you imagine the hate I would get if I claimed that because half the fandom headcanons Izzy as trans, he's more important canon trans rep than Jim sdfklgjdlkghkdlsfhglkdsfhgkldfshgkdsflg

The sunflower is the official symbol of hidden/invisible disabilities.
Three more flags on sunflowers! These are for asexual, aromantic and aroace people who also have invisible disabilities.
Feel free to use it and share it. I just ask that you credit me.
If you'd like to have it on pins, stickers, tote bags, clothes and other merch, these pride sunflowers are all available in my shop.
Let me know if you'd like a particular flag on a sunflower.

anyway
neurodivergent caretaker-coded Izzy who sacrifices his own comfort and happiness constantly for equally neurodivergent Ed, and eats his emotions and is super-routine-dependant and hates meeting anyone's eyes and is suddenly thrown out of his routine and normalcy onto the Revenge
But imagine if the crew of the Revenge were like. Little man is obviously overstimulated and having a continuous meltdown about how little he feels in control of his own life right now. Let's get him a weighted blanket and then all sit down and make a proper rota so he can relax
and Izzy just goes like a kitten who's been wrapped in a teatowel - absolutely spitting furious at first, biting anyone who tries to help, but gradually relaxing, blinking at everyone with wide eyes, taking in that they're actually trying to help and ooooh it's making him feel oddly calm? and cared for?? though he's usually the one who cares for others and he doesn't know how to handle or accept this but -
Grah.
Weighted blankets and warm hugs... good.....
