The AVERAGE student loan is about the same value as the average price of a new car in the USA. The AVERAGE student loan payment per month is less than $400. The "current" loans are 88%. About 30% of the 2019 graduating class (4 year degrees) were able to graduate with ZERO student debt.

Not a crisis.

The PRIMARY underlying cause is the unreasonable prices charged by USA universities. Since the 1988-9 academic year, USA universities have increased the prices they charge students at more than DOUBLE the rate of inflation, while starting salaries for 4 year degrees have only increased at the rate of inflation.

People who want to make excuses for the unreasonable prices charged by USA universities point to the decrease in state funding for the period 2007-2015 resulting from the Great Recession. There are two logic gaps with this excuse: 1. It does not explain the huge increases in prices from 1988 to 2007; and 2. It ignores the HUGE increase in federal funding during the period 2007-2015; the TOTAL government spending only decreased by 8% per student from 2007-2015 on an inflation adjusted basis.

The real reason USA universities charge so much, is due to the high spending. Compared to European universities, USA universities SPEND twice as much per student as European universities. The two outrageous areas of high costs are 1. Student Housing; and 2. Non Faculty Staff and Administration. There is no reasonable way to explain that USA universities must spend TWICE as much per student vs European universities, since all have the same array of expenses to spend on technology, facilities, utilities, faculty, administration, an other services.

The result is that USA students are being forced to pay TWICE as much as would be logical, based on inflationary pressures. If European universities were able to manage their costs and spending, why couldn't USA universities. If the prices were half, the debt levels would be half; payments would be half.

Quality is no sacrificed: 10 of the top 30 universities in the world are in Europe.

The solutions are:

1. Implement a process that requires student borrowers to go through the same protocols as a home mortgage. If the choice of degree will not allow the student borrower to graduate and BOTH pay off student loans AND have a reasonable standard of living, then no loan.

2. Require the universities to be the PRIMARY guarantor on student loans. This will ensure the universities are engaged with the student being successful both in universities' studies AND after graduation. Today, the universities have ZERO risk; and are able to "overprice" low paying degrees that have dismal job prospects and poor career opportunities. A 2015 Georgetown U study reported that "on average" a 4 year degree from college will provide lifetime earnings that exceed the average lifetime earnings by more than a million dollars. It also pointed out that the highest paying degree graduates would enjoy lifetime earnings that exceeded lower paying college degree graduates by more than $2 million. Finally, the lower paying college degrees would experience lifetime earnings that were the same as or LOWER than the average high school degree holder lifetime earnings. How can it be acceptable for a college to charge students to get a degree that allows them to earn the SAME OR LESS than their high school degree?

No one should be abused, this is unethical inhumane and ANTI-LOVE and the opposite of Love is hate...it is hateful and unloving and should be uncceptable anywhere and everywhere... Traumatizing anyone in any way is harmful to everyone. Harm is not loving/love. Unacceptable and inappropriate behavior/thoughts are #dichotomousthinking which should be banned from ALL Existence. Love is LOVE. Love doesn't hurt. True love, unconditional love, truth does not hurt as much as lies=cheating=stealing=killing killing the spirit and the body/soul all at once. Insensibility and ILLOGICAL AS unreasonable = negative doesn't not create a positive.
