International Mother Language Day:History and Significance
For the people of Bengal as well as language advocates and linguists worldwide, International Mother Language Day is a day of enormous importance. Every year on February 21st, the day is commemorated to encourage multilingualism and linguistic diversity, as well as to remember the sacrifices made by language activists in Bangladesh during the Bengali Language Movement.
In the early 1950s, a political and social movement called the Bengali Language Movement emerged in East Pakistan (modern-day Bangladesh). It was a demonstration against Pakistan’s 1948 declaration of Urdu as its sole national language. The majority of East Pakistanis who spoke Bengali believed that the action was discriminatory and infringed their rights to their language and culture. They pushed for the inclusion of Bengali as one of Pakistan’s official languages.
The demonstrations started on February 21, 1952, when Dhaka University students and members of the general public demanded that Bengali be granted the same status as Urdu. In a violent response, the police opened fire on the demonstrators, killing several of them. In East Pakistan, the incident provoked a wave of protests and turmoil.
Together with language, cultural identity, and political independence were also important aspects of the Bengali Language Movement. Intellectuals, students, and political figures led the campaign, seeing language as a means of asserting their rights and seeking a greater say in the affairs of the country. Bengali was eventually recognised as one of Pakistan’s official languages in 1956 as a result of the struggle.
International Mother Language Day, which was established by the UN in 1999, honours the history of the Bengali Language Movement and the sacrifices made by its participants. The purpose of the day is to encourage linguistic and cultural diversity and to increase awareness of the value of mother tongues for social cohesion, education, and communication.
International Mother Language Day is a day of cultural celebration and national pride for the people of Bangladesh. Cultural activities, processions, and the laying of wreaths at the Shaheed Minar (Martyr’s Monument), which was erected in Dhaka in honour of the language martyrs who died on February 21, 1952, commemorate the day. The structure serves as a reminder of the significance of Bengali to Bangladeshis.
The Bengali language is an integral part of the cultural heritage of Bangladesh, as well as of the Indian subcontinent. With more than 250 million speakers, it is the sixth most widely spoken language in the world. Some of the greatest works of literature, poetry, and music in the area were written in Bengali, a language with a long literary history that dates back to the ninth century.
The language of Bengali has also changed over time as a result of the shifting demands and aspirations of its speakers. Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, English, and other Indian subcontinental languages have all had an impact on it. This has given the language a distinctive grammar and syntax, as well as a rich and varied vocabulary.
In conclusion, International Mother Language Day is an important day for language advocates and linguists around the world, as well as for the people of Bangladesh. This day honours the diversity of languages and cultures and the sacrifices made by the Bangladeshi language martyrs. Bengali language activists and those who support linguistic diversity continue to be inspired by the Bengali Language Movement, which was a pivotal time in the history of the Indian subcontinent.

Revive the Rhythm, Revive the Art: Cocke Studio Bangla Season 3 Explodes with "Tati"
youtube
More than a revival, "Tati" is a resurrection. This once-lost gem from the "Doob" album emerges over a decade later, transformed by a captivating twist.
Nigerian artist Oil Boy, renowned for collaborations with Bangladeshi hip-hop stars, injects fresh energy. Jaya Ahsan, a leading actress in Bangladesh and West Bengal, adds her voice to the celebration.
"Tati" isn't just music; it's a tribute. It honours the 2000-year legacy of Dhaka Jamdani, a once-lost art of crafting exquisite cotton fabric. This song is a tapestry of sound, mirroring the intricate designs of Jamdani itself.
Weaving together Afrobeat rhythms, captivating melodies, and the voices of weavers (Tati), a village bride, and the Jamdani Saree, Arnob paints a sonic picture of this lost treasure's resurgence.
"Tati" is a journey for the adventurous listener.
It's not just a song; it's an immersive exploration of Bangla's heritage, where the threads of music intertwine with the threads of a revived art form.

After the incident on the bridge,  Esme stayed by Tyler’s first in a Mumbai hospital and then one in Sydney, Australia.   In the series, they settled down in Sydney after his release and that year she gave birth to their first, a daughter they named Amelia Grace Rake.
In ‘Lost and Found’, they lived in Tyler’s shack (featured in the movie) in The Kimberley.  They eventually (after a four-year separation) settle in Broome.

The Movie 'Barfi' had a scene where Barfi stands under a lamp post with his lover Shruti. He wanted to test the loyalty of Shruti. He chops the post off and let it fall on Shruti. He stood nearby to see what Shruti does. He knew the post was not going to touch her. He made the measurements before. While the post fells, Shruti runs away. Barfi gets frustrated seeing that.
In the first test of the loyalty the beautiful girl fails miserably. She stepped aside fearing that the post would fall on her. Barfi runs this test once again on Jhilmil. The love of his second life Jhilmil didn't move a bit seeing the post coming towards her. The lamp post fells and breaks the glass bottle. Jhilmil was standing there holding Barfi's shirt with her finger like she always does.
Jhilmil was mentally challenged. She wasn't smart. She couldn't understad what was going on. All Jhilmil had was her trust. Barfi, who holds her fingers and walks in front of her always, If he's there with her, no harm will ever come to her! he won't need to call her by her name standing in front of her house. All he needs to do is to throw his shoe through the window.
You need a Jhilmil in your life. Doesn't matter she is pretty or not. You need a Jhilmil to hold your hand and walk blindly beside you. You need a Jhilmil, who would come close to you and hold your finger if she gets scared at night. You need someone to fall asleep holding her finger!
'Barfi' teaches you the hardest reality of life. If you find a Jhilmil, never let her go. The reality is it's quite impossible to find a Jhilmil. The scene where Shruti's mother takes her to show her mothers lover who became a woodcutter, shows you how cruel reality could be! Shruti was a victim of situation as well.
When Barfi went to Shruti's house to ask her hand from her father, Shruti's father gave him some money as her mother told him Barfi came for donations. It broke Barfi's innocent heart who neither could hear nor could talk. Before walking out of their house he congratulated Shruti and her to-be husband saying they look great together through sign language. His umbrella doesn't open, his bi-cycle breaks down. He see's the expensive car of Shruti's to-be husband. He realizes the difference between Him and Shruti. What he was expecting was total madness. This scene is a solid masterpiece. One of the very few of Bollywood's gold. It's so pure that it hits straight inside your heart.
I watched 'Barfi' for the first time on a flight from Dhaka to Dallas, Texas. I boarded that flight with a heavy heart, as I was leaving all my loved ones behind. The flight was going to be a very long one. I wanted to distract my self, badly wanted to focus on something else. I opened the movie screen and 'Barfi' popped up. Started watching it without any thoughts or expectations. Honestly speaking, I couldn't even move to go to the lavatory through that two and half hour. Both Ranbir and Priyanka showed the world what they were made of and capable of doing. The music by Pritam was out of this world. The track 'Phir Le Aya Dil' by Shafqat Amanat Ali is a treat for your soul every time you listen to it, every time!
'Barfi' leaves a wonderful feeling with you after you watch it. It's like a magical hallucination. The movie makes you smile and say, "The biggest risk in life is to never take any risk!"
It makes you believe that there is a huge difference betweem loving someone madly and being loved by someone blindly. The second one is precious.
Very few people in the world get loved the way Jhilmil loved Barfi!
Sayonara everyone! <3

15th March 2023
15th March 2023 Day 2
That lack of sleep from the 4:30am cramps meant, I forgoed my want to be there when sir enters. I slept an extra 15 minutes and reached 8minutes before call time. Other than 2 of the boys everyone was already there warming up and I felt a bit shit. That extra 20 minutes early everyone comes, feels like a sign of community, setting up the room, warming up together, I told myself, unless I’m super sleep deprived, I won’t do it anymore.
By the way I haven’t mentioned yet. We are prepping a play to perform end May. we will be rehearsing morning till afternoon 6 days a week till the performance (with 5 days off for Eid,)  which will be 25 performances over 10-12 days! It seems a lot but trust me 2 months is Nothing, especially since we have miles to go. The day was super cloudy and so was Sir’s mood. I can feel the urgency to get the group synced but we are not. Not yet. One of the boys didn’t come, the shadow one, but nothing was said. First half we could sense sir’s frustration today that we all barely know each other and aren’t syncing. Today’s break I actually got. Sat on the roof (you saw my insta story with the transgender lady doing what my sister says is probably a tiktok (egula buzi na.)) I love Shilpakala, at any given time there are people singing, dancing, acting, there’s a jute fair downstairs, multiple events, in the evenings it is soo happening. However in the morning, there is this lovely inner circle calm around the scare people in the building. Only those who are the core team, or building their deep dedications are there at times like 8am. I feel amazing to be part of that. I started my career with western music and later did bangla music, I never really did the Dhaka route, of Shishu Academy, Chayanaot, Shilpokala. I’m the English medium girl who opened for Nemesis in Russian Cultural Centre, and later it was only through my choir Ghaashphoring and when I joined Mita Huqs Suurteertho that I got to do more traditional venues and events. I love it. My perspective of life is different, always has been. It’s not that my family isn’t Bengali enough, if you know them, you know that’s the opposite of true. But it’s that I was always different, I’ve always lived in my own world. A friend of mine, when told that im doing a play about 1971, instantly said, oh isn’t 1971 done to death already? And I felt like, not for me! I’ve never worked with it! I’ve never had that exposure to films/songs/events. Not because they don’t happen, it’s because I”ve never had my own connection to it. And so no, it’s not done to death! There are people like me, of my generation and younger who just know the basics from our class 4 textbooks, we’ve slept through 16 December and 26th March holidays. The English medium schooling system has  always had us not be as Bangali and aspire to be more Western, more “international” and sure that has helped me in some places, but be it Berklee or in my career, it is my connection to my roots that has gotten me places, and I am on a journey in Dhaka for the past 8 years to know all the things I missed. And I know for a fact there are many many like me, some who will never know, and some who are frustrated that they don’t. And yes there are aspects we get stuck on about 1971.. But the women’s side of the war, is the least talked about, least films, books, songs, museums, memorials. On top of that, it could be that this particular artist has not worked on a topic others have, just because others have I don’t feel like we should be limited exploring it. Anyway, Day 2 I still drooped during text reading, (diet coke didnt help, shall i try caffeine?), my left leg was slightly sprained from the fall; but we read M2, now we know all the 3 M stories. We were given some time to think about all 3 Ms and demonstrate some things about how we interpret all 3 M stories. I imagined one to be very forlorn and look out the window and as I did so to channel her, I saw something that I had been hunting for, just on the street of Segunbagicha (I’ll write later as certain peeps read the blog and I don’t want to give it away yet.) Despite the cloudiness of the morning vibes, overall day 2 in class went well, and we were assigned one each to work on for the actual “audition” and character development process.
If you are on my insta, you know I did a long walk through Ramna Park and DCL. Those are things I hope to have in my routine and write about as I explore more. I’m still struggling with time and sleep, this day too I could not get to my homework before it was 11pm, my remainder of the musical admin work is piling up too. I am trying to schedule my life, so I have less work hours outside this play, and still can afford my life. I will make it happen, some plans in the works. (Just need to wrap up some cocacola stuff :P ASAP)
