A walk through Bengal's architecture

Bengali architecture has a long and rich history, fusing indigenous elements from the Indian subcontinent with influences from other areas of the world. Present-day Bengal architecture includes the nation of Bangladesh as well as the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam's Barak Valley. West Bengal’s architecture is an amalgamation of ancient urban architecture, religious architecture, rural vernacular architecture, colonial townhouses and country houses, and modern urban styles. Bengal architecture is the architecture of Wind, Water, and Clay. The Pala Empire (750–1120), which was founded in Bengal and was the final Buddhist imperial force on the Indian subcontinent, saw the apex of ancient Bengali architecture. The majority of donations went to Buddhist stupas, temples, and viharas. Southeast Asian and Tibetan architecture was influenced by Pala architecture. The Grand Vihara of Somapura, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the most well-known structure erected by the Pala rulers.

According to historians, the builders of Angkor Wat in Cambodia may have taken inspiration from Somapura. Bengal architecture became known for its use of terracotta due to the scarcity of stone in the area. Clay from the Bengal Delta was used to make bricks.

The temple architecture has distinct features like the rich wall decoration, often known as the terracotta temples, which was one of the remarkable elements of Bengali temple architecture. The double-roofed architecture of thatched huts was replicated by Bengali temples. Square platforms were used to construct the temples. Burnt brick panels with figures in geometric patterns or substantial sculptural compositions served as the temples' adornment.

These served as models for many temples that were built in undivided Bengal. Construction materials used in ancient times included wood and bamboo. Bengal has alluvial soil, so there isn't a lot of stone there. The bricks that were utilized to build the architectural components were made from stone, wood, black salt, and granite. Bengal has two different types of temples: the Rekha type, which is smooth or ridged curvilinear, and the Bhadra form, which has horizontal tiers that gradually get smaller and is made up of the amalaka sila. Mughal architecture, including forts, havelis, gardens, caravanserais, hammams, and fountains, spread throughout the area during the Mughal era in Bengal. Mosques built by the Mughals in Bengal also took on a distinctive regional look. The two major centers of Mughal architecture were Dhaka and Murshidabad. The do-chala roof custom from North India was imitated by the Mughals.

The Rasmancha is a heritage building located at Bishnupur, Bankura district, West Bengal.

Influence of the world on Bengal architecture: Although the Indo-Saracenic architectural style predominated in the area, Neo-Classical buildings from Europe were also present, particularly in or close to trading centers. While the majority of country estates had a stately country house, Calcutta, Dacca, Panam, and Chittagong all had extensive 19th and early 20th-century urban architecture that was equivalent to that of London, Sydney, or other British Empire towns. Calcutta experienced the onset of art deco in the 1930s. Indo-Saracenic architecture can be seen in Ahsan Manzil and Curzon Hall in Dhaka, Chittagong Court Building in Chittagong, and Hazarduari Palace in Murshidabad.

The Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, designed by Vincent Esch also has Indo-Saracenic features, possibly inspired by the Taj Mahal. Additionally, Kolkata's bungalows, which are being demolished to make way for high-rise structures, have elements of art deco. The 1950s in Chittagong saw a continuation of Art Deco influences. The Bengali modernist movement, spearheaded by Muzharul Islam, was centered in East Pakistan. In the 1960s, many well-known international architects, such as Louis Kahn, Richard Neutra, Stanley Tigerman, Paul Rudolph, Robert Boughey, and Konstantinos Doxiadis, worked in the area.

This iconic piece of contemporary Bangladeshi architecture, was created by Louis Kahn. Midsized skyscrapers dominate the cityscapes of contemporary Bengali cities, which are frequently referred to as "concrete jungles." With well-known architects like Rafiq Azam, architecture services play a key role in the urban economies of the area. Overall Bengal architecture was influenced by various contemporaries of their time and continues to evolve.

ঈমান-আকিদাহ হোক বিশুদ্ধ, অকপট, অবিচল

অন্তরের বিশ্বাস, মৌখিক স্বীকৃতি, এবং তদনুযায়ী কাজের নামই হচ্ছে ঈমান। আকিদা’ অর্থ সুদৃঢ় বিশ্বাস, আস্থা। আকিদা হচ্ছে, এমন সব দ্বিনি বিষয়াদির সমষ্টি, যার ওপর বিশ্বাস স্থাপন করা একজন মুমিনের জন্য অপরিহার্য। এমন সুদৃঢ় বিশ্বাস, যাতে সন্দেহের লেশমাত্র নেই। এখানে দ্বিনি বিষয়াদির সমষ্টি দ্বারা উদ্দেশ্য কোরআন-সুন্নাহ তথা ওহি দ্বারা সাব্যস্ত প্রতিটি বিষয় তথা আল্লাহ, ফেরেশতা, কিতাব, রাসুল, আখিরাত, তাকদির ইত্যাদি। ইসলামের সুবিশাল অট্টালিকা আকিদা নামক সুদৃঢ় স্তম্ভের ওপর স্বগৌরবে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। আকিদা বিশুদ্ধ করা বান্দার প্রতি আল্লাহর সর্ব প্রথম নির্দেশনা। বিশুদ্ধ আকিদা ঈমানের জন্য অপরিহার্য।  ইসলামে আকিদার ক্ষেত্রে কোনো ছাড় নেই। নেই কোনো অস্পষ্টতা ও দোদুল্যমানতার সুযোগ। আমৃত্যু বিশুদ্ধ আকিদা সুদৃঢ়ভাবে ধারণ করে ইসলামী শরিয়াহর পূর্ণাঙ্গ অনুশীলনের চেষ্টা করে যাওয়ার মধ্যেই মানবজীবনের চূড়ান্ত সফলতা নিহিত। আকিদা বিশুদ্ধ করা বান্দার প্রতি আল্লাহর সর্ব প্রথম নির্দেশনা। বিশুদ্ধ আকিদা সর্ববৃহৎ ও সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ফরজ। জীবনজুড়ে যা থেকে এক মুহূর্ত বিচ্যুত হওয়ার কোনো সুযোগ নেই।

বাংলা স্বরবর্ণ দিয়ে ইসলামী বাক্য

অ- অস্বীকার করি সকল তাগুত,

আ - আল্লাহ একমাত্র সত্য মাবুদ

ই- ইবাদত একমাত্র আল্লাহরই জন্য

ঈ- ঈমান বিশুদ্ধ করে হবো ধন্য

উ – উপকারী জ্ঞান চর্চা করে সত্যিকারের জ্ঞানী

উ - ঊর্ধ্বলোকে আল্লাহ তায়ালা আছেন-তা জানি।

ঋ - ঋজুতা রাখব আকীদায়-ঈমানে,

ঋষিত্বের স্থান নেই ইসলামে।

এ - এবাদত করি শুধু এক আল্লাহর,

ঐ - ঐক্য গড়ে তুলি এসো মুসলিম উম্মাহর ।

ও - ওজন হবে পাপ-পুণ্যের শেষ বিচারের দিন,

ঔ – ঔদ্ধত্য ধুলায় মেশাবেন আল্লাহ রব্বুল আলামীন।

The night with you

কোন এক রাতের কথা । না । ভুল হলো । কোন এক পূণিমার রাতের কথা হবে ।রাতে বেশ সুন্দর রান্না হয়ছে ।খিচুরি আর ডিমভুনা ।পেট ভরে খেয়ে উঠলাম । দীঘ দিন পর এমন বৃষ্টিময় পূণিমার রাত। বিকালে বৃষ্টির পর আর বৃষ্টি নাই । আকাশে মেঘ আছে । তবে বৃষ্টি হবার সম্ভাবনা নেই বলেলই চলে ।তাকে ডাক দিলাম । বলাম চল ছাদে যাওয়া যাক । প্রথমেও না করলেও, পরে বলল ১০ মিনিট পর আসতেছি।আমি ছাদে গেলাম সাথে পারফিউম ক্যাণ্ডেল ,ম্যাচ আর কিছু চকলেট । চিলে কোটার ঘর থেকে চকি(খাট বিশেষ) বের করলাম ।তা ছাদের ঠিক মাঝ খানে রাখলাম । হালকা বাতাস দিচ্ছে মাঝে মাঝে । চাঁদ উঠেছে ঘন্টা তিন এক হবে ।এখনো মাথার উপরে আসে নি । আর ও কিছু সময় নেবে মনে হয় । পারফিউম ক্যান্ডেল টা জ্বালিয়ে দিলাম । তার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছি আর ছাদের চারদিকে হাটছি । চাঁদের আলোয় ছাদের গাছ গুলোকে খুব সুন্দর দেখাচ্ছে। পেয়ারা গাছে বেশ কয়েক টি বড় পেয়ারা আছে । আম গাছে মনে হয় নতুন পাতা আসছে । গোলাপ এর ও বেশ কয়েকটি কলি আসছে ।এসে বসলাম চকিতে । আন মনে হয়ে গুণ গুণ করছি তখন পিছন থেকে এসে টোকা দিয়ে কাছে বসল তিনি । বলল ঘুমাবে না । অনেক রাত হলো যে । আমি বলাম না । আজ ঘুমাব না। সারা রাত চাঁদ দেখব । তিনি বলল তুমিই দেখ আমি দেখব না ।ঘুমালাম । আমার কাছ থেকে কোন প্রকার সাড়া না পেয়ে আমার কাছে ভালো ভাবে বসল ।কাধে মাথা রাখল । তাকে চকলেট দিলাম । চকলেট খুলতে খুলতে সে বলল গন্ধরাজ এর গন্ধ কই থেকে আসছে। আমাদের ছাদে তো গন্ধরাজ গাছ নেই ।আমি বলাল পারফিউম ক্যান্ডল এর গন্ধ । মুচকি হেসে আবার কাধে মাথা রাখল । বলল বিছানা তৈরি করে রেখে এসেছি । চল । আমি বললাম যাব না । চাঁদ দেখব । তার পর সে তার সারাদিনের গটে যাওয়া নানা বিষয় নিয়ে কথা বলতে শুরু করল । আমি ও ভালো শ্রোতার মতো তার কথা শুনছি । হ্যা এ হ্যা , না এ না , হুম সহ নানা কিছ বলছি তার কথার ফাঁকে । এই ভাবে চলল বেশ কিছুক্ষণ । তার পর আমার কোলে মাথা রেখে পা বিছিয়ে দিয়ে শুয়ে পড়ল ।আমাকে তার পর প্রেমাতাল হওয়ার ঘটনা টা খুলে বলতে বলল । অনেক বার বলছি এ গল্প । আবার বলতে শুর�� করলাম ।গল্প শুনতে শুনতে এক ফাঁকে ঘুমিযে পড়ল আমার কোলে । চাঁদ ঠিক মাথার উপরে এসেছে । তীব্র জোছনা দিচ্ছে । সমগ্র পৃথিবী উজ্জল হয়ে উঠেছে মনে হয় । আমি তার মুখের দিকে তাকালাম । হাত দিয়ে তার চোখের চশমা টা খুলে দিলাম ।বাতাসে তার মুখের উপর এক গুচ্ছ চুল উড়ছে । হাত দিয়ে চুল গুলো সরিয়ে দিলাম । কী মায়াবি চেহারা । কোন শব্দ দিয়ে বর্ণনা করা যাবে না তাকে । বর্ণনা করলে সৌন্দর্য র অপমান করা হবে। তার ঠোঁটে আলতো করে স্পর্শ করাম। নিজের অজান্তে ভালোবাসি বলে পেলাম । আমি যে ভাবে হা করে তাকে দিখছি তা দেখতে পালে বা বুঝতে পালে কী লজ্জায় না পেত । লজ্জায় গাল দুটো লাল হয়ে যেত হয় তো বা । সমগ্র অঙ্গে এ চাঁদের আলো পড়েছে । বেশ লাগছে । । বসে বসে তার সঙ্গে দেখা হওয়ার স্মৃতি গুলো মনে করতে করতে লাগলাম।

1. ওই shakalaka boom boom পেন্সিল ( যেটা দিয়ে একটা গডজিলা এঁকে সেটাকে পুষবো , বাড়ির পিছনের বাগানটায় 😀, বাড়িতে কেউ marks জিজ্ঞেস করতে এলে ছেড়ে দেব গায়ে )

2. ওই lighter গুলোর একটা ( লোকজনকে gaslighting করতে 🥰)

শান্তিনিকেতন বেশ ভালো জায়গা , পচুউউর বুদ্ধিজীবি সংস্কৃতিবান লোকজন সকালবেলা হাত ধরাধরি করে শাড়ি পাঞ্জাবী পরে ইনি বিনি টাপাটিনি নাচে , রাতে কাগজফুল দিয়ে সাজানো aesthetic নামওয়ালা বাড়িগুলোতে গিয়ে মদ গিলে বালাপোশ টেনে ঘুমিয়ে পরে । ( এই so called elite গুলোই দেশে কোনো দুর্নীতি বা কিছু হলে গিটার বাজিয়ে তিনটে গান , চারটে ছবি , সাতটা কবিতা লিখে ফেসবুক ভরিয়ে দেয় , বইমেলার season এলে "অমুক স্টলে সতেরো তারিখ সন্ধে ছ'টা থেকে আমায় পাবেন" লিখে status দেয় , এদের করা শ্রেষ্ঠ প্রতিবাদের ভাষা হল "তীব্র ধিক্কার জানাই😠")

সন্দিগ্ধ এই মানবতার ধ্বংসাবশেষ।

একটা সময় খাঁটি বাড়ি ছিল, পাকা সড়ক ছিল

নদী ছিল, চামড়ার মত মাঠ ছিল

রোমকূপে বৃষ্টি জমতো এক-আধ দিন।

ম্যাটাডোরে মানুষ গেল, পালেপালে মেঘ

পাপোশ ছিঁড়ল। বাড়ির ভিতে ঢুকল শীত।

দেওয়ালও কিছু ভাঙল বটে, জোরা তাপ্পি –

ইঁটের বদলে বালি দিতে পুড়ল রক্ত জোস্নাপ্রপাতে

এক-একটা ইঁট সরিয়ে নিলে এক-এক অযুত

পিছু হাঁটুক সভ্যতা। নদীর বুকে ফুঁসত যে প্রেম,

এখন নিছক রুটিন মেনে ভাগচাষা, আর রাস্তাগুলো

চলতে শিখে পাক খেয়ে খেয়ে আইন মাফিক ঢুকছে

মলে, ঢুকছে পার্কে, দেখছে শিশু পড়ছে রোলারকোস্টার

গভীর গাঢ় শূন্যতাতে।
