Just returned from holidaying in the Southern Uplands of Scotland where, in between hill-walking, I enjoyed a bit of wildlife photography in the grounds of the remote cottage where I was staying. Unfortunately the dreaded midges were out in full force, but luckily there were a few windy days which kept them at bay; so it was lovely watching the fledglings of certain species including Dunnock, Redstart, Pied Wagtail and the Wheatear seen here when the conditions permitted. Wheatears are a migratory insectivorous species that live in open country and fellside, so are a familiar sight to most fell-walkers and people who venture out in open countryside during the summer months. Pictured here, this juvenile female perched perfectly on a fallen tree branch with a mossy drystone wall forming a lovely backdrop. The second of my images Commended in The Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year 2022 competition. After climbing the nearby summits of Green Lowther & Lowther Hill in thick fog, I descended to the final summit of the day; East Mount Lowther. As I descended into the col between the hills, the mist cleared to reveal this dramatic view down the Enterkin Pass towards Steygail. I really liked how the power poles descended into the mist, creating plenty of depth and intrigue. Great Spotted Woodpecker. It's been a while since I've posted any wildlife photography, so here's one I captured last year on a holiday in Scotland. The grounds of the lodge where I was staying was brimming with wildlife so every morning I would spend a good couple of hours getting acquainted with the visitors. This Great Spotted Woodpecker was a regular, and can be identified as male due to the bright red patch on the back of the head. On this particular morning I was down by a reedbed trying to capture some images of some of the smaller visitors, so was quite surprised when the woodpecker landed on the bulrush right in front of me.
