Wood Engraving Wednesday
KENNETH LINDLEY
English artist and wood engraver Kenneth Lindley (1928-1986) designed, engraved, and printed Coastwise in a limited edition of 50 copies at his own Pointing Finger Press in Yorkshire in 1970. Our copy is signed by Lindley. He studied wood engraving with James Bostock and Norman Janes, and became an art educator himself starting in 1950, eventually becoming Head of Wakefield School of Art in 1966 and then Principal of the Herefordshire College of Art in 1971.
Lindley was inducted as a member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1960 just before this venerable institution began to fall into dissolution. It was through Lindley's efforts, however, along with those of engravers Hilary Paynter and George Tute, that the Society was revived in 1984, "virtually amounting to a re-foundation after a difficult mid-century." Today the Society is thriving and active.
The places depicted in these wood engravings are, from top to bottom: Brittany, St. Mary's Island, St. Osyth's Beach, Ballard Point, Holland Haven, Dovercourt, Stackpole Quay, Braystones, Portland, Botallack, and Maryport.

Brazilian-Portuguese Band Coastwise Releases Single & Music Video 'Gimme What You've Got'
A gaze pierces the crowd, pushing past the multitude of people to reach its destination. It lands on a set of eyes, and for a fraction of a second they lock as if for eternity, only to break the connection just as quickly. But the message was sent and received. The flame is lit and the game is on. We can all identify with this situation. The tension of lust in the pursuit of passion. The push and…

Building and Rebuilding
On the post-flood central Occident, new cultures in Incarien, and underwater developments.
Corobel started turn 18 with 17 points: 9 (roll) + 3 (nonhoarding) + 5 (left over)
Corobel starts turn 19 with 21 points: 4 (roll) + 17 (left over)
Command Avatar (-1): In the wake of the Great Flood, chaos stalks the land. Cults thrive. Some menace the lunar passage, or the Secret below, or the temples of great Azimuth. The Two Stars grant the fearsome Sun-Diver warrior Qaheb, who survived the expedition and the flood, an immortal mission to guard the holy places. He bears the terrible sword Decision, which is a sliver of the razor-sharp present. His countenance is the white-freckled blue of twilight; pink-gold butterfly’s wings grace his back. His company is the Evenguard, who patrol the blood-red swamps and ruined towns rooting out bandits, rogue calyptra, and the myriad indecently proportioned shapes that menace travel.
The blood does not rot, for it is not permitted to die; nor will the earth admit it, so foul it is. Only inconstant water will dilute it, and so it perdures in attenuated pools of unnatural red, still bright as if fresh-taken from a living artery, but thin as iron-fouled water. In these, the sun will not show his face, nor will any happy visage be perceived—all reflections frown in horror, whatever the expression of the face itself.
Other than that, it’s a pretty chill place, sort of picturesquely post-apocalyptic. The flowery and vivacious life of the Occident springs eternal, if somewhat strangely. The survivors want to reclaim and improve the ruined land, but this will be the work of generations. Azimuth still stands, somewhat reduced, and the blow in the rest of the continent is more spiritual than material.
Command Avatar (-1): The House of Faces, with the inspiration of the ever-changing moon, builds an insurance policy against Kilkanaqa—hidden chambers in which souls can be regrown from pruned-off thoughts and memories implanted in an unconscious host. These slowly warp the host’s mind into an (imperfect) facsimile of that of the original donor. If the worst happens, the House’s highest echelons will be restored from backup.
Command Avatar (-1): The Oracles instigate the construction of the Temple of the Charism on the hill above the Nak valley where the Prophetic Twins are supposed to have received their vocation.
Command Civilization (-3): The socially marginal, the pioneers, the runaway slaves of the coastal Lunar civilizations disperse into the continental interior, forming hardy civilizations of nomadic herders and stubbornly independent farmers. These are the Pale Hosts. They ride moon-adapted mvao and silvery reptilian creatures, braving terrible storms of regolith and the punitive expeditions of the coastwise kingdoms. Often seen in more civilized regions as merchants and mercenaries, they are recognizable by their distinctive customs and pallid dress.
Command Civilization (-3): Around the Isthmus of Incarien, human/Sun-Diver kingdoms grow in power and wealth. Their culture is vibrant, fusing ideas and aesthetics from both sides of the continent, and half a dozen major states war intermittently. The richest is proud Vayak, of the thousand bolts of cloth, so called because that, at one point, was its price. In its palace, there is a great menagerie, where the trapped souls of executed criminals (small, furry, scurrying creatures) are denied the polar solace of Laneth. Its legendary founder, Ulam, supposedly came from the Nak ten generations before the pilgrimage of the Prophetic Twins.
Command Civilization (-3): Near the Gulf of Azmit, trading emporia traffic the goods of the northern regions, the Glass Steppe, and the more developed regions of Incarien, even as they fend off (or buy off) periodic incursions from western nomads. The markets offer fur, ivory, amber, ice keener and stronger than steel, the golden frost-rime of frozen souls, sky-flowers, slaves. The land is dotted with chiefdoms, only some of whom control emporia; the marginal, especially, are eager to pledge themselves to a slow parade of steppe hegemons as convenience demands. The greatest emporium is Olavern, of the Amber Citadel. Its doughty oarsmen brave the breadth of the Sea of Isles, and the priests of the great church are given to obscure contemplative rituals involving amber, glass, ice, candles, whale-fat, burning pine. Popular fancy imputes to it the sin of cannibalism, brought home in the empty holds of ill-fated northern expeditions.
Command Avatar to Found City (-1): The False-Fire Trance of Evening, bolder than his fellows in seeking the solace of icy depths, founds a new city on the edge of the Abyss, planning to dive further after various arcane preparations. His polymorphic retinue, Aphotic drones and overseers and servant-broods, settles into the muck and builds. The silt itself, and the luminous microbiota within, seem drawn to the great deep, streaming among the rooftops like gently glowing waterfalls. The fauna of the deepest places—endless forms, most terrible—flits the lightless streets. This is Barathron, the Poised. Its streets flirt with the great depths, subaquatic shanties looming, aurora-shadowed, in piles above the yawning fathoms. Its inhabitants are drawn to flights of fancy, to self-destructive longing, and to that final and most vertiginous fall. Some say they see lights in the deep. All feel the awful gravity of night; and, when they sicken or grow old, many simply float away, avoiding a mundane and natural death in favor of one infinitely more sublime.
Command Civilization (-3): Aphotics gradually begin to disperse beyond the control of the Fires, forming independent bands and villages nestled in the coral and kelp of the shallows.
5 points remain.

Acquiring Vessel Documentation Online and Maintaining It With Our Help
Do you want to document your vessel but aren’t sure about the best way to do so? Does documentation seem a bit confounding at times? As fellow vessel owners, we’ve been in your shoes. We understand that the thought of “filling out vessel documentation” might evoke memories of taking a challenging math test back in high school.  It is this that, at least partially, motivated us to establish this portal for taking care of vessel documentation online.
Our portal was designed to be a haven where vessel owners can effortlessly access the requisite forms and expedite the documentation process. Initiating US Coast Guard Vessel Documentation Online
Should your vessel measure a minimum of five net tons and is owned by an American citizen, then you can document it. It’s crucial to note that “net tons” gauges volume, not weight. Typically, a vessel measuring 25 feet or longer is likely to meet the five net tons requirement. All necessary forms can be conveniently located on our site, streamlining the documentation process.
If your vessel meets the above criteria, you can document it. You have to document it if you plan on using it in fishing or coastwise trade on American navigable waters or in the Exclusive Economic Zone, documentation becomes imperative. Renewal Made Routine
Once you’ve successfully navigated the initial documentation process, your vessel is set for a year. Before that date, however, you need to renew it. You’ll have to do this every year that you want to maintain documentation.
While it may seem like an annual inconvenience, there’s good news – an alternative exists.
Our platform enables you to renew your documentation for up to five years in advance. Rather than the annual hassle, our experts can handle the renewal logistics for you, offering peace of mind. If you anticipate remaining with your vessel for the next five years, we can simplify the process for you. Reinstatement Protocol
Life is unpredictable, and sometimes documentation renewal slips your mind. Whether due to oversight or a last-minute realization that came long after the expiration, we’ve got you covered.
With us, you’ll find comprehensive resources to reinstate your vessel documentation online if you missed the deadline. This ensures uninterrupted use of your vessel according to your preferences, even if the documentation has lapsed. The Right Endorsement for the Job
Every documented vessel is unique, serving diverse purposes. Consequently, various endorsements may accompany your documentation. For instance, if your vessel is intended for fisheries, there’s a specific endorsement for that purpose. Engaging Solely in Coastwise Trade?
There’s an endorsement for that. Vessels designated for foreign trade fall under the “Registry” endorsement, while those used purely for recreation carry the aptly named “Recreation” endorsement.
Remember: all vessels can be utilized for recreational purposes.
The Documents You Need Online
Obtaining and maintaining US Coast Guard vessel documentation doesn’t have to be daunting. With our user-friendly platform and comprehensive resources, we aim to simplify the process, ensuring that vessel owners can navigate the seas of documentation with confidence and ease. The rutted roads are all like iron; skies
Are keen and brilliant; only the oak-leaves cling
In the bare woods, or the hardy bitter-sweet;
Drivers have put their sheepskin jackets on;
And all the ponds are sealed with sheeted ice
That rings with stroke of skate and hockey-stick,
Or in the twilight cracks with running whoop.
Bring in the logs of oak and hickory,
And make an ample blaze on the wide hearth.
Now is the time, with winter o'er the world,
For books and friends and yellow candle-light,
And timeless lingering by the settling fire.
While all the shuddering stars are keen with cold.
II
Out from the silent portal of the hours,
When frosts are come and all the hosts put on.
Their burnished gear to march across the night
And o'er a darkened earth in splendor shine,
Slowly above the world Orion wheels
His glittering square, while on the shadowy hill
And throbbing like a sea-light through the dusk,
Great Sirius rises in his flashing blue.
Lord of the winter night, august and pure,
Returning year on year untouched by time,
To hearten faith with thine unfaltering fire,
There are no hurts that beauty cannot ease,
No ills that love cannot at last repair,
In the victorious progress of the soul.
III
Russet and white and gray is the oak wood
In the great snow. Still from the North it comes,
Whispering, settling, sifting through the trees,
O'erloading branch and twig. The road is lost.
Clearing and meadow, stream and ice-bound pond
Are made once more a trackless wilderness
In the white hush where not a creature stirs;
And the pale sun is blotted from the sky.
In that strange twilight the lone traveller halts
To listen to the stealthy snowflakes fall.
And then far off toward the Stamford shore,
Where through the storm the coastwise liners go,
Faint and recurrent on the muffled air,
A foghorn booming through the Smother--hark!
IV
When the day changed and the mad wind died down,
The powdery drifts that all day long had blown
Across the meadows and the open fields,
Or whirled like diamond dust in the bright sun,
Settled to rest, and for a tranquil hour
The lengthening bluish shadows on the snow
Stole down the orchard slope, and a rose light
Flooded the earth with beauty and with peace.
Then in the west behind the cedars black
The sinking sun stained red the winter dusk
With sullen flare upon the snowy ridge,--
As in a masterpiece by Hokusai,
Where on a background gray, with flaming breath
A scarlet dragon dies in dusky gold."
--The Winter Scene, Bliss Carman (1929)
I did have my Winter Scene after all, I woke to a thick duvet of powdery snow the other day, and walked to the park to watch the sun rise and birds fly over the gorgeous landscape!

Why Is It Important to Obtain a Certificate of Documentation as a New Boat Owner?
The US relies heavily on maritime transportation. Hence, the government set up laws to mandate certain boats to document them with the USCG. It is important to note that not all boats can be given a certificate of documentation. There are requirements that you must meet before you can document it with the USCG.
The Importance of a Certificate of Documentation This COD is issued by the federal government. It provides legal recognition to a vessel. It indicates that your boat complies with the laws and regulations set forth by the USCG. As a new boat owner, obtaining it is the first step in ensuring legal compliance with national and international maritime standards.
Ownership Proof You can use this certificate to prove ownership. It can serve as concrete proof of ownership of the boat. It is vital for you as a new boat owner if you wish to establish your rightful ownership and secure your investment. This certificate includes details about the ownership history of the boat. It also provides a clear record for any future transactions.
International Travel and Navigation If you are planning to navigate the international waters, this COD becomes even more crucial. Many countries require vessels to have proper documentation for entry. Having the COD on board ensures smooth international travel. It also prevents complications at foreign ports. Thus, it enhances your boat’s global navigability.
Access to Federal Waters and Privileges Some privileges come with having a documented vessel. This is especially true when it comes to accessing federal waters and participating in specific activities. If you plan to engage in activities like coastwise trade or other commercial endeavors, having this document is a prerequisite.
Financing and Insurance If you wish to borrow money from a bank to finance your boat purchase, you will need to present this document to your lender. The COD serves as evidence of legal ownership. It can streamline the financing and insurance processes. It also leads to more favorable terms. Furthermore, most lenders will only approve loans to documented boats.
Clear Identification This COD includes vital information about the boat, like name, hailing port, and specifications. This clear identification is vital for effective communication, especially in maritime activities. It helps avoid confusion. It also enhances safety on the water and contributes to seamless interactions with other vessel authorities.
Documentation of Maritime Liabilities You can also check this document for vessel history. That is, you can check the boat’s history regarding accidents and any maritime liabilities. This documentation provides insights into the vessel’s condition. From there, you can assess potential risks and make informed decisions.
Adding Significant Value If you maintain its documentation, it is easy for you to sell the boat in the future. The reason for this is that the COD can add significant value to your vessel. It facilitates a smoother transfer of ownership by providing a comprehensive and recognized record of the boat’s history and legal standing.
A Legal Requirement Obtaining a Certificate of Documentation is sometimes a legal requirement. If your boat meets the requirements, you need to obtain it. For initial documentation, you may check out the form on the left side of this page. Or call us if you need further help with renewal.

How To Acquire Uscg Documentation And How To Hang Onto It
USCG documentation is not difficult to get; nevertheless, maintaining it might be challenging. This article outlines the measures that need to be taken to ensure that your documentation is in order and provides instructions on how to prevent it from becoming obsolete. As the owner of a yacht, you are well aware of the significance of having all the necessary papers in place. The procedure of collecting USCG paperwork may seem intimidating; however, this is not always the case. Following these easy instructions will give you all you need in minutes.
Determine What Type of USCG Documentation You Need
Finding out what kind of USCG documentation you want is the first thing you need to do to get it. If your boat is considered a “documented vessel,” the procedure will be somewhat more complicated for you than for someone who merely requires a license for a small ship. The United States Coast Guard separates vessels into three categories: documented, recreational, and commercial boats. A vessel used only for recreational purposes, such as going out on the water for a few hours here and there, is referred to as a recreational vessel whose owner is exempt from some registration requirements. It is considered a commercial vessel if you want to use it for any business purpose or if it is more than 26 feet in length. You will need a coastwise or an ocean-going certificate to operate legally.
Gather the Required Information and Application Forms
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a government organization with primary authority over the seas that are considered part of the United States. Consequently, they have a financial incentive to ensure that vessels that navigate our regional waterways are as seaworthy as is humanly possible. To get started, collect whatever documents you already own about your vessel and make sure you have its name (or the name of the vessel) and its official number. According to ecfr.gov, you will need to look for an application form for an official number if you do not have any documents, if your documentation has been lost or destroyed, or if you have never had USCG documentation in the first place.
Pay the Appropriate Fees
You must ensure that your boat has a Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection (C.O.I.). If it doesn’t, you’ll need to get one by completing the appropriate forms, paying the required fees, and submitting any necessary supporting USCG documentation. In order to make your very own Sailing Vessel Documentation, there are a few steps you need to take. You’ll need to ensure that your boat has a Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection (C.O.I. In addition, you will need to acquire a Certificate of Registry, which can be obtained by filling out the proper paperwork and paying the necessary costs to receive a Vessel Identification Number (V.I.N.). To ensure that the information you provide on the application is correct, you must understand all the factors that go into calculating this figure.
Submit Your Application and Supporting Documents
Your application and supporting documents must be submitted first. The USCG provides an extensive list of everything you’ll need to provide, which might be daunting at first, but if you break it down into manageable parts, it will be completed in no time. If you’re applying to the USCG, you’ll need to present papers dated within the last year. Old papers updated with new information, such as an insurance policy, may be used to get around the necessity of presenting current copies. Remember to save copies of anything you send in case you need them in the future, whether you’re sending in an old or new document. You may also wish to verify the status of your vessel’s documents online at this point. Whether given incorrectly or canceled without your awareness, it’s best to find out now rather than while attempting to take your boat out on the water.
Await Approval from USCG Headquarters
Before you are allowed to take your boat out in public lawfully, you are required to receive USCG documentation while you are getting ready to purchase it. A few stages need to be taken to complete the procedure, and there are a few items you will need from your boat. After compiling all of the necessary data and submitting the application, the only thing left is to sit tight and wait for the coast guard to come back to you with their verdict.
Contact the U.S. Vessel Documentation Center today at (800) 340-7580 for more. You’ve been on a great journey with your boat, but it’s time to ensure your vessel is properly documented with the U.S. Coast Guard.

US Coast Guard Documentation Form and Instruction – It Is Super Easy
Vessel documentation is a legal process that establishes a vessel's nationality and ownership. It is a federally required process for vessels operating on US waters that involve registering the vessel with the US Coast Guard and obtaining a Certificate of Documentation. The Certificate of Documentation, commonly known as a vessel title, which will serve as proof of ownership and enables the vessel to engage in certain commercial activities, such as fishing and coastwise trade. Vessel documentation is not the same as vessel registration, which is a state-level process that typically applies to smaller vessels and focuses on safety and compliance with state regulations. Even though it is a federal-level process that is primarily concerned with establishing the legal ownership and nationality of larger vessels that operate on interstate or international waters.
A NOAA fishing license is a permit that allows an individual to engage in commercial fishing activities in US waters. If the holder of a NOAA Fishing License wishes to transfer their license to another person or entity, they must go through a transfer process to ensure that the new holder is legally authorized to engage in commercial fishing activities. The transfer process typically involves completing a transfer application and submitting it to the appropriate agency. The application will generally require the new license holder to provide information about their identity, their fishing experience, and their intended fishing activities. The transfer process may also involve paying fees and providing additional documentation like proof of insurance or vessel registration. Once the transfer is approved, the new holder of the NOAA fishing license will be authorized to engage in commercial fishing activities under the terms and conditions of the license. Transferring a NOAA fishing license is an important process for commercial fishermen, as it enables them to continue their fishing activities and maintain their life. It also helps to ensure that fishing activities are conducted in a responsible and sustainable manner, as NOAA fishing licenses are subject to various regulations and restrictions designed to protect marine ecosystems and fish populations.
If you own a vessel that is currently documented with the US Coast Guard and you want to transfer ownership to another person or entity, then you must go through the vessel documentation transfer process. US Coast Guard Documentation Transfer process is important to ensure that the new owner is legally authorized to operate the vessel and that the documentation is properly updated with the US Coast Guard. To transfer the documentation of a vessel, the current owner must first submit a completed transfer application to the National Vessel Documentation Center, along with any required fees and supporting documentation. The application must include the name and address of the new owner, as well as any changes to the vessel's name or hailing port. The new owner will also need to submit documentation to demonstrate their eligibility to hold the vessel's documentation like proof of US citizenship or a waiver issued by the US Coast Guard. Once the transfer is complete and all required fees have been paid, the NVDC will issue a new Certificate of Documentation in the name of the new owner.

On the Friday there was a guided walk along the Senwick Shore, then on Saturday and Sunday we learnt about marine archaeology and undertook a survey of the Fauna (pictured). Finally on the Monday a rapid survey was carried out of the Monreith at Dhoon Beach.
If you want to find out more about these fascinating wrecks you can read the report here
This project was carried out as part of the Solway Firth Partnership’s Kirkcudbright Bay Views project, which is being supported by The Galloway Glens Scheme.
The fieldwork was organised by Solway Firth Partnership and carried out by local volunteers with training and supervision by staff from SFP, Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) and SCAPE.
