I am so excited to have met my FIRST Bunk-A-Biker! And it’s a soul story… I’ve tried numerous times the last year to try to meet some folks on the forum, but they either didn’t respond, our schedules didn’t align, or they left my message on read (guys, I finally know how it feels 😹). Emma saved me from the cold for a few hours and recharged my energy. She kindly fed me tea, we talked bikes, shared life and I lounged around in front of the fire with her pets. I think she’s is absolutely hilarious. When I was getting ready to leave, she asked me in a more serious tone: Can you do me a favor? And you can say no. She told me about a rider friend, Nathan, who passed away in 2021 from suicide and asked if I would put his memorial sticker on my bike to take him to all the places he couldn’t go. His nickname was Puddin. What do you think my response was? HELL. YEA. No hesitation. I had to stop myself from snatching Nathan’s sticker out of Emma’s hand. Nathan, hold on tight, we are going far and I’m going to show you the world! *Cue Aladdin song* I asked Emma what “Hud Er Lit” means? And she said “Ride It Hard” Done. Neon doesn’t match Freyja, but when another biker bestows this honor on you, you do it. Scotland Fix of the Day: The evening was supremely quiet as the moon came up over the Callanish Stones; it was calming and settling to be there alone amongst the stones – and the spirits of the people who put them up 5,000 years ago. This religious site was central to Neolithic life on Lewis for well over 1,000 years and then fell out of use. Gradually blanket peat rose in layers around the stones until only the tops were visible. In 1857 the proprietor of Lewis, James Matheson, had workers strip away five feet of peat, revealing the chambered tomb in the center. Linlithgow Palace

James I ordered work on a palace to begin in 1424, following a fire that severely damaged the earlier residence. The elegant, new ‘pleasure palace’ became a welcome rest stop for royals on the busy road between Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle.

Mary, Queen of Scots, was born on 8th of December 1542 at Linlithgow Palace, to King James V and his French second wife, Mary of Guise. Mary was baptised at the nearby Church of St Michael shortly after she was born. On 14th December, six days after her birth, she became Queen of Scotland when her father died.

The palace fell quickly into decline when James VI (son of Mary) moved the royal court to London in 1603, following his coronation as James I of England.

The palace’s north quarter, which probably housed the queen’s apartment where Mary was born, fell to the ground in 1607. It was rebuilt around 1620, on the orders of James VI. The Duke of Cumberland’s army destroyed most of the palace buildings by burning in January 1746.

Melrose Abbey, Scottish Borders. .

David I founded Scotland’s first Cistercian monastery in 1136. Being so close to the border, Melrose Abbey suffered at English hands during the Middle Ages. Melrose’s location put it on the front line of conflict with England during the later Middle Ages.

Melrose was attacked by Edward I (1300 and 1307) and Edward II (1322) required major repairs. Also Richard II’s attacked Melrose in 1385 led to a complete rebuilding of the abbey church.

The Abbey suffered from the Protestant Reformation in 1560. Afterwards, the existing monks were allowed to stay on: the last died in 1590.

Mary Queen of Scots House, Jedburgh, Scottish Borders.

This beautiful tower house was built in the 16th century. It is said that Mary, Queen of Scots lived in this house in 1566 for a short time after she returned from France.

Today it is a very interesting museum about the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. Really worth to visit, not only for Mary fans.

Craigievar Castle or the „Pink Castle“ near Alford, Aberdeenshire.

Craigievar Castle was built in the Scottish Baronial style in the 16th century. This iconic tower house is one of the best preserved and the most loved castles in Scotland. Its exterior remains virtually unchanged since William Forbes completed it in 1626.

Craigievar was the Forbes family home until the 1960s. National Trust for Scotland is now responsible for the castle.

Scotland Fix of the Day: Seeing Ceapabhal hill towering in the distance over the long beaches of the Isle of Harris beckons you to an historic walk in a unique Scottish Landscape. Begin by driving on down to Northton where you look out over the tidal saltings to the crofting community of An Taobh Tuath, farmhouses lining the road in traditional fashion, each croft a narrow strip of land running from the beach up the hill. Walk on out towards Ceapabhal past idyllic beaches and you'll come to Rubha na Teampaill, an ancient church built atop the ruins of an earlier broch. (The broch would be roughly 2,000 years old. The Vikings came raiding and ransacked the place in the 800's. The church you see here was rebuilt in 1528.) This is common grazing land so don't be surprised to see sheep sheltering in the church. If you are lucky you might find a crofter like Kenny MacKay out amongst the flock at lambing time. Midhope Castle, also known as Lallybroch, home of Jamie Fraser (Outlander).

The property was owned by the Martin family in 1478, and they had a castle here, but passed to the Livingstones soon afterwards. James Lindsay, Lord Lindsay, had a ratification of 1592 for the lands of Midhope, with the tower and fortalice thereof. Midhope belonged to the Drummonds of Midhope, who were in possession during part of the 16th and 17th centuries, and Alexander Drummond of Midhope remodelled the tower in 1587 and his initials with those of his wife Marjorie Bruce are on a former lintel now above a gateway. Alexander Drummond of Midhope is on record in the 1640s, then Sir Robert Drummond of Midhope in 1647 and 1661.

The property passed to the Livingstones in 1664, and the intials of George Livingstone, 3rd Earl of Linlithgow are on a lintel, then went to the Hopes in 1678 and they remodelled the building. In 1710 the place was described as ‘a fine towerhouse with excellent gardens, one of the seats of the Earls of Hopetoun’. Midhope Castle was used to house farm workers after the building of nearby Hopetoun House, and in 1851 53 people lived here, but it was later abandoned and is now semi-derelict, although the outside was consolidated in 1988. The castle lies on the extensive Hopetoun estate.
